The interplay between abiotic and biotic factors in dispersal decisions in metacommunities

Suitable conditions for species to survive and reproduce constitute their ecological niche, which is built by abiotic conditions and interactions with conspecifics and heterospecifics. Organisms should ideally assess and use information about all these environmental dimensions to adjust their dispersal decisions depending on their own internal conditions. Dispersal plasticity is often considered through its dependence on abiotic conditions or conspecific density and, to a lesser extent, with reference to the effects of interactions with heterospecifics, potentially leading to misinterpretation of dispersal drivers. Here, we first review the evidence for the effects of and the potential interplays between abiotic factors, biotic interactions with conspecifics and heterospecifics and phenotype on dispersal decisions. We then present an experimental test of these potential interplays, investigating the effects of density and interactions with conspecifics and heterospecifics on temperature-dependent dispersal in microcosms of Tetrahymena ciliates. We found significant differences in dispersal rates depending on the temperature, density and presence of another strain or species. However, the presence and density of conspecifics and heterospecifics had no effects on the thermal-dependency of dispersal. We discuss the causes and consequences of the (lack of) interplay between the different environmental dimensions and the phenotype for metacommunity assembly and dynamics. Resident-Disperser Differences and Genetic Variability Affect Communities in Microcosms

AbstractDispersal is a key process mediating ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Its effects on the dynamics of spatially structured systems, population genetics, and species range distribution can depend on phenotypic differences between dispersing and nondispersing individuals. However, scaling up the importance of resident-disperser differences to communities and ecosystems has rarely been considered, in spite of intraspecific phenotypic variability being an important factor mediating community structure and productivity. Here, we used the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila, in which phenotypic traits are known to differ between residents and dispersers, to test (i) whether these resident-disperser differences affect biomass and composition in competitive communities composed of four other Tetrahymena species and (ii) whether these effects are genotype dependent. We found that dispersers led to a lower community biomass compared with residents. This effect was highly consistent across the 20 T. thermophila genotypes used, despite intraspecific variability in resident-disperser phenotypic differences. We also found a significant genotypic effect on biomass production, showing that intraspecific variability has consequences for communities. Our study suggests that individual dispersal strategy can scale up to community productivity in a predictable way, opening new perspectives to the functioning of spatially structured ecosystems.

Habitat specialisation and matrix resistance predict responses of butterfly populations to landscape features in tropical grassland-forest complexes

A fundamental question in ecology is to understand how a species is distributed in a landscape. In terrestrial landscapes, the size and isolation of habitat patches, and matrix properties, are thought to drive population density patterns. Yet, given the same set of landscape features, why do species from a single taxon vary so widely in their density patterns? A primary hypothesis for such variation, proposed by community-level studies, is that key ecological characteristics of species influence how they respond to landscape features. However, robust tests of this hypothesis, which require measurements of populations of multiple species in an assemblage, are still scarce. We investigated the ability of ecological specialisation and the interaction of species with the matrix (matrix resistance) to predict population responses of butterfly species to patch size and connectivity in naturally heterogeneous tropical forest-grassland complexes. We surveyed 56 habitat patches in a 65 sq. km area by laying 276 transects, along which the identity and abundances of butterfly species were recorded. We also used transects that cut across two habitats to estimate matrix resistance. We find that habitat specialisation predicted the strength of area-density and isolation-density relationships. Matrix resistance also predicted variation in area-density relationships, highlighting the importance of species interactions with the matrix. Specialists showed higher matrix resistance and stronger area and isolation effects than did generalists. Our findings suggest that investigating how traits related to ecological specialisation and matrix resistance affect demographic parameters can contribute towards understanding mechanisms underlying species distributions in heterogeneous landscapes.

Land cover, individual's age and spatial sorting shape landscape resistance in the invasive frog Xenopus laevis

The description of functional connectivity is based on the quantification of landscape resistance, which represents species-specific movement costs across landscape features. Connectivity models use these costs to identify movement corridors at both individual and population levels and provide management recommendations for populations of conservation interest. Typically, resistance costs assigned to specific land cover types are assumed to be valid for all individuals of the population. Little attention has been paid to intraspecific variation in resistance costs due to age or dispersal syndrome, which may significantly affect model predictions. We quantified resistance costs in an expanding invasive population of the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis in Western France. In this principally aquatic amphibian, juveniles, sub-adults and adults disperse overland. The enhancement of dispersal traits via spatial sorting has been also observed at the range periphery of the population. Resistance costs, and thus connectivity, might vary as a function of life stage and position within the invaded range. We assessed multiple dimensions of functional connectivity. On various land cover types, we measured locomotion, as crossing speed, in different post-metamorphic age classes, and dehydration, sensitivity of locomotion to dehydration and substrate preference in juveniles. We also tested the effect of the position in the invaded range (core vs. periphery) on individual performances. In juveniles, general trends towards higher resistance costs on grass and lower resistance costs on bare soil and asphalt were observed, although not all experiments provided the same cost configurations. Resistance to locomotion varied between age classes, with adults and sub-adults facing lower costs than juveniles, particularly when crossing structurally complex land cover types such as grass and leaf litter. The position in the range had a minor effect on landscape resistance, and only in the dehydration experiment, where water loss in juveniles was lower at the range periphery. Depicting functional connectivity requires (a) assessing multiple dimensions of behavioural and physiological challenges faced by animals during movement; (b) considering factors, such as age and dispersal syndrome, that may affect movement at both individual and population levels. Ignoring this complexity might generate unreliable connectivity models and provide unsupported management recommendations for conservation.
