Faith Community Nurses Key to Promoting Health in At-Risk Communities: An Integrative Review

ABSTRACT

An integrative literature review was conducted to identify recommendations to implement culturally congruent and spiritually connected approaches to health promotion in at-risk faith communities. Five themes emerged from an analysis of 48 articles meeting criteria for the review. Review results repeatedly highlighted the impact nurses-more specifically faith community nurses (FCNs)-can have on at-risk population outcomes and bridging the gap between minority communities and the healthcare establishment. Five recommended action steps provide program guidance to FCNs for promoting faith-based health in at-risk minority communities.

Back in the Day: Nostalgia Frames Rural Residents' Perspectives on Diet and Physical Activity

OBJECTIVE

To observe and interpret cultural influences on health behaviors in a rural area with a high prevalence of obesity.

DESIGN

Descriptive, qualitative study.

SETTING

Lenoir County, NC, US.

PARTICIPANTS

Four focus groups (n = 33) were conducted. Participants were 76% African American and with an average of 25 years of county residence.

PHENOMENON OF INTEREST

Diet, physical activity, environment ANALYSIS: Content analysis and thematic data analysis to identify key themes using qualitative analysis software.

RESULTS

Participants frequently evoked nostalgia to frame recurrent themes including decreased opportunities for physical activity and changing food access and preparation in the community, contrasting with memories of enjoying local produce and safe outdoor recreation. They interpreted present health behaviors in the context of these past losses.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Nostalgia is an important element in our participants' cultural repertoires, revealing elements of place-based culture. Nostalgic narratives may foster a sense of reduced options for healthy eating and exercise by over-emphasizing loss. The incorporation of place-specific obesogenic cultural factors, including the way residents juxtapose past and present, may improve obesity interventions in rural settings.

Foods served at faith community events for children - Is there room for improvements in this unexplored child nutrition site?

OBJECTIVE

To describe food and beverage provisions by Faith Communities from one denomination in association with events for children.

DESIGN, SAMPLE AND MEASURES

Foods and beverages provided at 32 child-focused activities were documented using direct observation methodology and analyzed for contribution to food groups and per serving energy, fat, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium contents.

RESULTS

Main dishes were mostly (71%) convenience/casserole-type foods, and averaged 962 mg sodium and 436 kcal, with 36% of energy from fat and 14% as saturated fat. Cheese was the main source of dairy products. Grain-based side dishes, provided at 29% of meals, included white rice, pasta, and bread. Non-starchy vegetables were provided at three (29%) meals. Fruits were served at six events. Desserts, served at 75% of events, contained 41% of energy from fat, with 17% as saturated fat, and 22 g of added sugar. Snack chips, provided at 31% of events, contributed 165 kcal mostly from fat and 243 mg of sodium. Sugar-sweetened beverages, served at 71% of events, contributed 28 g of added sugar.

CONCLUSIONS

This pilot investigation identified areas for improvements in the nutritional quality of foods/beverages served at faith community child-focused events and aligns with expanding public health efforts to improve child nutrition beyond traditional settings.
