Temperatures during flower bud development affect pollen germination, self-incompatibility reaction and early fruit development of clementine (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan.)

Heatwaves exacerbate pollen limitation through reductions in pollen production and pollen vigour

Increasingly frequent heat waves threaten the reproduction of flowering plants; compromising the future persistence, adaptive capacity, and dispersal of wild plant populations, and also the yield of fruit-bearing crop plants. Heat damages the development of sensitive floral organs and gametes, which inhibits pollen germination, pollen tube growth, and fertilization. However, the role of heat has not been integrated into the framework of pollen quantity and quality limitation and how heat influences the success of cross and self-pollination. We exposed developing flowers to either controlled temperature (25 °C:20 °C) or extreme heat (35 °C:20 °C) over 72 h. We then hand-pollinated them with either crossed or self-derived pollen from the same temperature treatment to determine the direct and interactive effects of simulated heatwaves on pollen tube growth and resulting seed set. We also collected anthers from virgin flowers to measure heat impacts on pollen production. Under cooler control temperatures pollen tube survival of self-derived pollen was approximately 27% lower than that of crossed pollen. Pollen tube survival in heat-treated cross-pollinated and heat-treated self-pollinated flowers were 71% and 77% lower compared to flowers cross-pollinated at control temperatures. These differences in pollen tube survival rate between heat-treated cross-pollinated and heat-treated self-pollinated flowers were insignificant. Furthermore, extreme heat reduced seed set by 87%, regardless of pollen origin, and also reduced pollen production during flower development by approximately 20%. Our results suggest flowers that develop during heatwaves are likely to experience exacerbated pollen quantity and quality limitation driven by changes in pollen production and pollen vigour. Heatwave-induced pollen limitation will likely reduce crop yields in agricultural systems, and depress mating and reproduction in wild plant species, the latter of which may hinder the adaptive capacity of plants to a rapidly changing world.

Parthenocarpy, a pollination-independent fruit set mechanism to ensure yield stability

Fruit development is essential for flowering plants' reproduction and a significant food source. Climate change threatens fruit yields due to its impact on pollination and fertilization processes, especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures, insufficient light, and pollinator decline. Parthenocarpy, the development of fruit without fertilization, offers a solution, ensuring yield stability in adverse conditions and enhancing fruit quality. Parthenocarpic fruits not only secure agricultural production but also exhibit improved texture, appearance, and shelf life, making them desirable for food processing and other applications. Recent research unveils the molecular mechanisms behind parthenocarpy, implicating transcription factors (TFs), noncoding RNAs, and phytohormones such as auxin, gibberellin (GA), and cytokinin (CK). Here we review recent findings, construct regulatory models, and identify areas for further research.

Induction of Acquired Tolerance Through Gradual Progression of Drought Is the Key for Maintenance of Spikelet Fertility and Yield in Rice Under Semi-irrigated Aerobic Conditions

Plants have evolved several adaptive mechanisms to cope with water-limited conditions. While most of them are through constitutive traits, certain "acquired tolerance" traits also provide significant improvement in drought adaptation. Most abiotic stresses, especially drought, show a gradual progression of stress and hence provide an opportunity to upregulate specific protective mechanisms collectively referred to as "acquired tolerance" traits. Here, we demonstrate a significant genetic variability in acquired tolerance traits among rice germplasm accessions after standardizing a novel gradual stress progress protocol. Two contrasting genotypes, BPT 5204 (drought susceptible) and AC 39000 (tolerant), were used to standardize methodology for capturing acquired tolerance traits at seedling phase. Seedlings exposed to gradual progression of stress showed higher recovery with low free radical accumulation in both the genotypes compared to rapid stress. Further, the gradual stress progression protocol was used to examine the role of acquired tolerance at flowering phase using a set of 17 diverse rice genotypes. Significant diversity in free radical production and scavenging was observed among these genotypes. Association of these parameters with yield attributes showed that genotypes that managed free radical levels in cells were able to maintain high spikelet fertility and hence yield under stress. This study, besides emphasizing the importance of acquired tolerance, explains a high throughput phenotyping approach that significantly overcomes methodological constraints in assessing genetic variability in this important drought adaptive mechanism.

Understanding Physiology and Impacts of High Temperature Stress on the Progamic Phase of Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.)

The reproductive phase of coconut is extremely sensitive to high temperature, manifesting as button (female flower) shedding and poor nut set. The progamic phase, which elapses from pollination to fertilization, is one of the most critical phases during the sexual reproduction processes in annuals and fruit trees and is extremely vulnerable to high temperature. Hence, we investigated the progamic phase of the tall coconut cultivar West Coast Tall (WCT) and the effect of high temperature on the phase under both in vivo and in vitro conditions. Coconut has a long pistil and its length was found to be 18.2 ± 4.9 mm in WCT. Pollen germination on stigma occurred one day after pollination and the pollen tube traversed through the pistil and reached micropyle of ovule four days after pollination at 29 °C. However, high temperature (T_max > 33 °C), both under in vivo and in vitro conditions, significantly reduced pollen tube growth through the pistil, suggesting its inability to reach the ovule on time to effect fertilization. High temperature also advanced nectar secretion and stigma receptivity and the receptive stigma was dry without nectar, rendering it unappealing to insect pollinators. Thus, both poor pollination and the inability of pollen tube to reach the ovule on time to effect fertilization could be the cause of poor nut set in the coconut variety WCT under high temperature. However, it was encouraging to note that the pollen tube growth was less vulnerable to elevated temperature under high humidity, suggesting that climate change effect on coconut in coastal regions with high humidity might be less severe.

Temperature-Dependent Compatible and Incompatible Pollen-Style Interactions in Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan. Show Different Transglutaminase Features and Polyamine Pattern

In clementine, failure of fertilization can result in parthenocarpic fruit development, which has several advantages, such as seedless fruit, longer shelf-life, and greater consumer appeal. Recently, S-RNases have been identified in Citrus grandis, thus revealing that the self-incompatibility (SI) reaction relies on the S-RNase gametophytic mechanism. The fundamental role of environmental factors, mostly temperature, in determining the numbers of pollen tubes reaching the ovary is also well established in Citrus. In the present work, temperature-dependent pollen-pistil interactions in C. clementina were analyzed, focusing on several morphological aspects, as well as on polyamine (PA) content and the activity and distribution of transglutaminase (TGase), both reported to be involved in the SI response in pear and in pummelo. Results clearly indicate that temperature contributed to a different activation of the SI response, which occurs at optimal temperature of 25°C but was by-passed at 15°C. TGase activity was stimulated during the SI response, and it localized differently in the compatible and incompatible interaction: in compatible pollinated styles, TGase localized inside the style canal, while it was detected all around it in incompatible crosses. TGase localization and activity were congruent with the levels of soluble and insoluble conjugated PAs and with morphological evidences, which highlighted cell wall modification occurring as a result of SI.

The thermal ecology of flowers

BACKGROUND

Obtaining an optimal flower temperature can be crucial for plant reproduction because temperature mediates flower growth and development, pollen and ovule viability, and influences pollinator visitation. The thermal ecology of flowers is an exciting, yet understudied field of plant biology.

SCOPE

This review focuses on several attributes that modify exogenous heat absorption and retention in flowers. We discuss how flower shape, orientation, heliotropic movements, pubescence, coloration, opening-closing movements and endogenous heating contribute to the thermal balance of flowers. Whenever the data are available, we provide quantitative estimates of how these floral attributes contribute to heating of the flower, and ultimately plant fitness.

OUTLOOK

Future research should establish form-function relationships between floral phenotypes and temperature, determine the fitness effects of the floral microclimate, and identify broad ecological correlates with heat capture mechanisms.

Short communication: thermal regimes in hollow stems of herbaceous plants-concepts and models

Although there have been studies of the temperature regimes within flowers, micrometeorology within stems seems to have been overlooked. We present ideas, hypotheses, and a diagrammatic model on the biophysical and thermodynamic processes that interact in complex ways to result in elevated temperature regimes within hollow stems of herbaceous plants. We consider the effects of the ambient air around the stems, the possible importance of insolation, and greenhouse effects as influenced by stems' orientation and optical properties, i.e., reflection, absorption, emissivity, translucence, pigmentation, and thermal conductivity. We propose that greenhouse effects contribute significantly to and are influenced by the above phenomena as well as by the gross anatomy (volume:surface ratio; wall thickness), evapotranspiration, and the thermal properties of the gas mixture in the lumen. We provide examples of those elevated temperatures that can be several degrees Celsius above the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.
