The effect of individual reminiscence therapy on adaptation difficulties of the elderly: a randomized clinical trial

Effectiveness of Comprehensive Intervention Programme on Quality of life, fatigue, self-efficacy, and psychosocial distress among head and neck cancer patients receiving radiotherapy

PURPOSE

The study aimed at evaluating the Effectiveness of Comprehensive Intervention Programme (CIP) on Quality of life (QOL), fatigue, self-efficacy, and psychosocial distress among Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) patients receiving radiotherapy treatment.

METHODS

Single-centre non-RCT time series study was conducted among 134 HNC patients (67 observed, followed by 67 subjected to CIP). FACT- H&N, FACT-F, Cancer Behavior Inventory and psychosocial distress scales were used to assess QOL, fatigue, self-efficacy, and psychosocial distress respectively. CIP was provided to the intervention arm twice a week during the course of radiation therapy along with the standard care; the control arm received only standard care. Data were collected before commencing radiotherapy, and post-test assessments were carried out at the end of radiotherapy treatment, and at 3 and 6 months after completion of radiotherapy.

RESULTS

Repeated measures ANOVA revealed a statistically significant improvement with CIP in QOL (F (1.917) = 454.103, p = 0.001), fatigue (F (2.106) = 183.775, p = 0.001), self-efficacy (F (2.429) = 190.861, p = 0.001), and psychosocial distress (F (2.288) = 290.105, p = 0.001) in the intervention arm.

CONCLUSION

The CIP implemented to address multitude of issues in HNC patients receiving radiotherapy, proved to be effective in reducing the impact of treatment on QOL, fatigue, self-efficacy and psychosocial distress in HNC patients receiving radiotherapy.

Effects of reminiscence therapy on cognition, agitation, and quality of life in older adults with dementia receiving long-term care

BACKGROUND

Dementia is one of the most common neuropsychiatric conditions in older adults. Despite many older adults with dementia receiving long-term care (LTC), few studies have been conducted in Turkey on reminiscence therapy (RT) influencing neuropsychiatric symptoms and quality of life in people with dementia receiving LTC. This study aimed to investigate the effect of RT on cognition, agitation, and quality of life in older adults with dementia receiving LTC in Turkey.

METHODS

The study population consisted of 100 older adults living in a LTC centre in a province. The size of the research group was calculated using the power analysis method, and 54 older adults were included in the study, 27 each in the RT and control (C) groups. Data collection forms Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI), and the Alzheimer's Disease Quality-of-Life Scale (AD-QOL) were applied to the RT and C groups before RT (T0 ), 1 week after RT (T1 ), 1 month after RT (T2 ), and 3 months after RT (T3 ) to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Mean, standard deviation, ratio, percentile, Fisher's exact test, Pearson Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Friedman test were used in analyzing the data.

RESULTS

Older adults in the RT and C groups were similar regarding sociodemographic characteristics, institutional care, and life models (P > 0.05). When comparing the T3 values of MMSE, CMAI, and AD-QOL total scores with the T0 values, a significant difference was observed between the groups, favouring the RT group (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Individual RT may benefit cognition, agitation, and quality of life of older adults with dementia residing in a LTC centre.

The effect of a resourcefulness-based instrumental reminiscence program for nursing home residents: A pilot study

OBJECTIVES

To examine the effect of a resourcefulness-based instrumental reminiscence program (RIRP) for nursing home residents.

METHODS

This study was a mixed-methods study with one-group pretest-posttest design. The RIRP incorporated Emotional Venting, Reconstruction Strategies, Planning for Future, and Strengthening Support. It was performed once a week for 6 weeks. A post-intervention interview was conducted to explore participants' perception of the RIRP and quantitative data about psychological adjustment, learned resourcefulness, social support, self-efficacy, and quality of life were collected.

RESULTS

40 participants completed the RIRP with an 88.9% intervention compliance rate. 92.5% participants satisfied with the RIRP. A significant improvement was identified in psychological adjustment, learned resourcefulness, self-efficacy, social support, and mental health in nursing home residents after the RIRP. Qualitative results identified three prominent categories: innovation, benefits, and challenges.

CONCLUSION

The innovative RIRP is a feasible intervention in potentially improving psychological adjustment, learned resourcefulness, self-efficacy, social support, and mental health of nursing home residents.

Effects of reminiscence therapy on psychological outcome among older adults without obvious cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Introduction

Reminiscence therapy has been a high-benefit and low-cost measure of psychosocial intervention for older adults in recent years. It has attracted much attention in the intervention study of older adults without obvious cognitive impairment. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of reminiscence therapy on psychosocial outcomes among older adults without obvious cognitive impairment and analyze the divergences of different intervention programs (form, duration, and setting) on outcomes.

Methods

We searched the commonly used databases and used RevMan 5.4 in the meta-analysis (PROSPERO-ID: CRD42022315237). All eligible trials used the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool and the Effective Public Health Practice Project quality assessment tool to identify the quality and determine the bias risk grade.

Results

Twenty-seven studies were included, involving 1,755 older adults. Meta-analysis showed that reminiscence therapy has a significant effect on both depression and life satisfaction. Group reminiscence played a significant role in improving life satisfaction. Depression symptoms were not affected by the intervention duration (P = 0.06), while life satisfaction was significantly improved after more than 8 weeks of intervention (P < 0.00001). Intervention settings drove differences in depressive symptoms (P = 0.02), and the effect size of the community was larger.

Conclusion

Reminiscence therapy can significantly reduce depressive symptoms and improve life satisfaction. There are different effects of reminiscence therapy in different intervention schemes on psychological outcomes among older adults. More well-designed trials with large sample sizes and long-term follow-ups are necessary to confirm and expand the present results.
