Early Maternal Depression and Social Skills in Adolescence: A Marginal Structural Modeling Approach

Current maternal depression associated with worsened children's social outcomes during middle childhood: Exploring the role of positive affect socialization

BACKGROUND

Maternal depression negatively predicts aspects of the mother-child relationship and social functioning in offspring. This study evaluated interrelations between mothers' depression history and current severity with dynamic indices of positive affect socialization and indices of offspring' social outcomes.

METHODS

N = 66 mother-child dyads in which approximately 50 % of mothers had a history of maternal depression were recruited. Children were 6-8 years old and 47.7 % male. Dyads completed a positive interaction task, which was coded for mother and child positive affect. Mothers and children reported on peer functioning and social problems and children reported on the quality of their best friendships at 1-year follow-up.

RESULTS

Current level of maternal depression, but not depression history, was related to more social problems and lower best friend relationship quality. Indices of positive affect socialization were not related to history or current levels of maternal depression, or social outcomes, with the exception of maternal depression history predicting greater likelihood of mothers joining their children in expressing positive affect. Exploratory, supplementary analysis revealed that this may be due to treatment history among these mothers.

LIMITATIONS

Conclusions should be tempered by the small sample size, which limited the types of analyses that were conducted.

CONCLUSION

Results suggest that the effect of maternal depression on aspects of child social outcomes could be specific to current levels. Our data also did not support previously found associations between maternal depression and positive affect socialization. Results suggest positive implications for the effect of treatment for maternal depression for mother-child dynamics.

Transactional Relations Between Peer Victimization and Depressive Symptoms Among Youth at Risk of Developing Depression: Evidence for Gender Differences

Offspring of mothers with a history of major depressive disorder (MDD) are at high risk of developing the disorder themselves, yet specific mechanisms of risk remain unclear. One hypothesized mechanism is interpersonal stress, which has been shown to be elevated in offspring of mothers with a history of MDD. The goal of this study was to examine the role of a specific form of interpersonal stress, peer victimization (overt and relational). In doing so, we not only examined the impact of peer victimization on changes in youth depression, but also youth depression on changes in peer victimization, consistent with stress generation models. Participants were 251 mothers with (n = 129) or without (n = 122) a history of MDD and their child (aged 8-14 years at baseline) who were assessed every six months for two years. Using random intercepts cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPM), we were able to separate between-subject effects (mother MDD group differences in average levels of peer victimization and offspring depressive symptoms) and within-subject effects (transactional influences between within-subject fluctuations in peer victimization and depressive symptoms among offspring over time). Overall, these effects were stronger for relational victimization than for overt victimization and stronger for girls than boys. These results support the role of peer victimization, particularly relational victimization, as a risk factor among offspring of mothers with MDD, particularly girls, and highlight transactional relations between relational victimization and depressive symptoms in girls over time, which may create a vicious cycle of risk.

Offspring Personality Mediates the Association between Maternal Depression and Childhood Psychopathology

Offspring of mothers diagnosed with major depression are at increased risk for a wide range of psychological problems. Previous research has shown that individual differences in personality development can be informative for predicting risk and resilience to psychopathology, especially within at-risk populations. In the present study, we examined whether individual differences in offspring personality development during early to middle childhood could account for the association between maternal depression and offspring behavior problems later in childhood. Participants included 64 offspring of mothers diagnosed with major depression and 68 offspring of healthy comparison mothers. Personality was assessed via parent report at ages 3, 4, 5, and 9. Offspring internalizing and externalizing symptoms were assessed at age 9 via parent and teacher report. Results of latent growth curve models indicated that offspring Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, and Agreeableness mediated the link between early maternal depression and later childhood behavior problems, though results varied across maternal and teacher reports. Findings suggest that individual differences in youth personality and personality development are important predictors of emerging psychopathology among offspring of mothers diagnosed with depression.

The Association Between Fathers' Depression and Children's Socioemotional Development: Evidence from a Longitudinal Household Survey in China

Depression is highly prevalent among parents around the world. Although there has been substantial research on maternal depression, few studies have additionally considered paternal depression and examined the independent and potentially interactive influence between paternal and maternal depression on children's development. The objectives of this study were to investigate the unique association between paternal depression and children's later socioemotional development, and explore whether this association was moderated by maternal depression. We used data from the 2012 and 2014 waves of the China Family Panel Studies. We used multivariable linear regression models to examine the association between paternal depression, as measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, and children's socioemotional development, as measured using the Positive Behaviors Scale. We also explored whether there was effect modification by maternal depression. The sample comprised of 1615 children (M_age = 7.38 years; 48.5% female) and their parents. Twenty-four percent of fathers and 33% of mothers were depressed. We found that paternal depression was negatively associated with children's socioemotional development (β = - 0.18; 95% CI - 0.31, - 0.03), controlling for maternal depression and other sociodemographic covariates. Moreover, we found that the association was moderated by maternal depression, whereby the negative association was stronger when mothers were not depressed (β = - 0.30; 95% CI - 0.52, - 0.08) versus null when mothers were depressed (β = - 0.02; 95% CI - 0.24, 0.20). Parenting interventions should promote the mental health of fathers, in addition to mothers, as a more holistic and family-based approach for improving both the wellbeing of parents and behavioral development of children.
