Characterizing the tissue dielectric constant of skin basal cell cancer lesions

A Tuned Microwave Resonant System for Subcutaneous Imaging

A compact and planar imaging system was developed using a flexible polymer substrate that can distinguish subcutaneous tissue abnormalities, such as breast tumors, based on electromagnetic-wave interactions in materials where permittivity variations affect wave reflection. The sensing element is a tuned loop resonator operating in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band at 2.423 GHz, providing a localized high-intensity electric field that penetrates into tissues with sufficient spatial and spectral resolutions. The resonant frequency shifts and magnitudes of the reflection coefficients indicate the boundaries of abnormal tissues under the skin due to their high contrasts to normal tissues. The sensor was tuned to the desired resonant frequency with a reflection coefficient of -68.8 dB for a radius of 5.7 mm, with a tuning pad. Quality factors of 173.1 and 34.4 were achieved in simulations and measurements in phantoms. An image-processing method was introduced to fuse raster-scanned 9 × 9 images of resonant frequencies and reflection coefficients for image-contrast enhancement. The results showed a clear indication of the tumor's location at a depth of 15 mm and the capability to identify two tumors both at the depth of 10 mm. The sensing element can be expanded to a four-element phased array for deeper field penetration. Field analysis showed the depths of -20 dB attenuation were improved from 19 to 42 mm, giving wider coverage in tissues at resonance. Results showed that a quality factor of 152.5 was achieved and a tumor could be identified at a depth of up to 50 mm. In this work, simulations and measurements were conducted to validate the concept, showing great potential for subcutaneous imaging in medical applications in a noninvasive, efficient, and lower-cost way.

Measurement and image-based estimation of dielectric properties of biological tissues —past, present, and future—

The dielectric properties of biological tissues are fundamental pararmeters that are essential for electromagnetic modeling of the human body. The primary database of dielectric properties compiled in 1996 on the basis of dielectric measurements at frequencies from 10 Hz to 20 GHz has attracted considerable attention in the research field of human protection from non-ionizing radiation. This review summarizes findings on the dielectric properties of biological tissues at frequencies up to 1 THz since the database was developed. Although the 1996 database covered general (normal) tissues, this review also covers malignant tissues that are of interest in the research field of medical applications. An intercomparison of dielectric properties based on reported data is presented for several tissue types. Dielectric properties derived from image-based estimation techniques developed as a result of recent advances in dielectric measurement are also included. Finally, research essential for future advances in human body modeling is discussed.

Bioimpedance Sensor and Methodology for Acute Pain Monitoring

The paper aims to revive the interest in bioimpedance analysis for pain studies in communicating and non-communicating (anesthetized) individuals for monitoring purpose. The plea for exploitation of full potential offered by the complex (bio)impedance measurement is emphasized through theoretical and experimental analysis. A non-invasive, low-cost reliable sensor to measure skin impedance is designed with off-the-shelf components. This is a second generation prototype for pain detection, quantification, and modeling, with the objective to be used in fully anesthetized patients undergoing surgery. The 2D and 3D time-frequency, multi-frequency evaluation of impedance data is based on broadly available signal processing tools. Furthermore, fractional-order impedance models are implied to provide an indication of change in tissue dynamics correlated with absence/presence of nociceptor stimulation. The unique features of the proposed sensor enhancements are described and illustrated here based on mechanical and thermal tests and further reinforced with previous studies from our first generation prototype.

Lymphology and translational medicine

Lymphology is evolving in search of a better management of lymphedema patients, both as to the diagnostic pathway and as to the therapeutic options. Similarly, lymphatic system is involved in a wide spectrum of pathophysiologic processes of most chronic degenerative diseases. Translational medicine integrates the interdisciplinary scientific knowledge to improve diagnostic and therapeutic options in the biomedical field. Inflammation and lymphatic function are regarded as the connecting biochemical factors in most diseases. This review focuses on the scientific publications regarding lymphatic system in connection to psycho-neuroendocrine immunology, hormesis, epigenetics and more generally nutrition and lifestyle. The interaction between lymphology and translational medicine may play a relevant role to improve management of lymphedema on the one hand, and of chronic degenerative diseases on the other.

Minimum Detectable Changes Associated with Tissue Dielectric Constant Measurements as Applicable to Assessing Lymphedema Status

Background: Tissue dielectric constant (TDC) measurements are increasingly being used as a tool to help characterize lymphedema features, detect its presence, and assess treatment related changes. Although the underlying physics of this technology has been well described in the literature, there has been little systematic study of in vivo reliability aspects. A central unanswered question is the minimal detectable change (MDC) that, with a given level of confidence, may be ascribed to this technology. Our goal was to address this issue using test-retest measurements from which intraclass correlations coefficients (ICC) and MDC could be estimated. Methods and Results: Forty volunteers (20 females) aged 19-61 years with body mass indices of 14.7-47 kg/m² and body fat percentages of 12.0%-48.9% were evaluated. Two measurers (M1 and M2) used two different TDC measuring devices (multiprobe and compact) to measure TDC in triplicate sequentially and bilaterally at three locations; anterior forearm, hand palmar mid-thenar eminence, and dorsum mid-web. These measurements were made by each measurer twice constituting test-retest values (T1 and T2). From these measurements ICC_2,1 and MDC at 95% confidence were determined for each site and probe for absolute TDC values and for inter-side ratios. MDC values for absolute TDC ranged from 2 to 9 TDC units, and for inter-side ratios ranged from 5.3% to 8.0% depending on site and probe. ICC_2,1 values ranged from 0.765 to 0.982. Conclusions: The MDC values herein documented may be used to provide guidance to aid interpretation of measured TDC changes or differences in a clinical environment.
