Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of the Peste des Petits Ruminant (PPR) virus (PPRV) in sheep populations and to determine the potential epidemiological risk factors associated with this infection. Between October 2014 and March 2017, 2420 sheep serum samples were collected from ten selected PPR outbreak-prone districts in Bangladesh. The collected sera were analysed by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) test to detect antibodies against PPR. A previously designed disease report form was used to gather data on important epidemiological risk factors, and a risk analysis was performed to ascertain their association with PPRV infection. By cELISA, 44.3 % (95 % confidence interval:42.4-46.4 %) of sheep sera were positive for PPRV antibodies against PPR. In univariate analysis, the Bagerhat district had significantly higher seropositivity (54.1 %, 156/288) than other districts. Moreover, significantly higher (p < 0.05) seropositivity was found in the Jamuna River Basin (49.1 %, 217/442) compared to other ecological zones, in crossbreeds (60 %; 600/1000) related to native sheep, in males (69.8 %, 289/414) associated with females, in imported sheep (74.3 %, 223/300) compared to other sources, and in winter (57.2 %, 527/920) than in other seasons. In the multivariate logistic regression model, six possible risk factors were identified: study location, ecological zone, breed, sex, source, and season. The high seroprevalence of PPRV is significantly associated with several risk factors, suggesting that PPR is epizootic throughout the country.

Abstract
Bluetongue (BT) is an infectious, vector-borne viral disease of animals having a substantial economic impact and it is endemic in the bordering states of the Indian subcontinent. Livestock enters frequently from India into Bangladesh without any screening. Hence, this study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of Bluetongue virus (BTV) and associated risk factors in small ruminants of Bangladesh. We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Dhaka, Chattogram, and Faridpur districts of Bangladesh between 2017 and 2018. The team collected 333 serum samples from 123 goats and 210 sheep and tested them for the presence of antibodies against BTV using a competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA). A mixed multivariable logistic regression model was built to identify risk factors. Sample collection location was included as a random effect and husbandry and demographic variables as fixed effects to identify the potential risk factors. The BTV seroprevalence was found to be 55.3% (n = 184; 95% CI: 49.74-60.68). In the mixed-effect logistic regression analysis, animal species (AOR: 4.69; 95% CI: 2.49-8.82; p = 0.001) and vector control measurement (AOR: 9.01; 95% CI: 4.01-20.00; p = 0.0001) were significantly associated with BTV seropositivity. However, no significant association was found in multivariable mixed-effect logistic regression for the variables age, body condition score (BCS), vaccination against PPR (p > 0.05). The study found evidence of high seroprevalence of BTV in both sheep and goats in different districts of Bangladesh, indicating natural exposure of the virus and the animals can serve as a potential threat for other animals. Further research is needed to isolate and identify the circulating virus serotype(s) of BTV in Bangladesh as well as longitudinal studies for epidemiological investigations to formulate sound control programs and to enhance the awareness about the possible impacts of this disease on the livelihood of the people.

Abstract
(1) Background: Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious animal disease affecting small ruminants, leading to significant economic losses. There has been little published data on PPR virus (PPRV) infection in the United Arab Emirates (UAE); (2) Methods: four outbreaks reported in goats and Dama gazelle in 2021 were investigated using pathological and molecular testing; (3) Results: The infected animals showed symptoms of dyspnea, oculo-nasal secretions, cough, and diarrhea. Necropsy findings were almost similar in all examined animals and compliant to the classical forms of the disease. Phylogenetic analysis based on N gene and F gene partial sequences revealed a circulation of PPRV Asian lineage IV in the UAE, and these sequences clustered close to the sequences of PPRV from United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Iran; (4) Conclusions: PPRV Asian lineage IV is currently circulating in the UAE. To the best of our knowledge, this is a first study describing PPRV in domestic small ruminant in the UAE.

Abstract
As a highly contagious viral disease, peste des petits ruminants (PPR) can cause severe socio-economic impacts in developing countries due to its threat to sheep and goat production. Previous studies have identified several risk factors for PPR at the individual or herd level. However, only a few studies explored the impacts of landscape factors on PPR risk, particularly at a regional scale. Moreover, risk factor analyses in Africa usually focused on sub-Saharan Africa while neglecting northern Africa. Based on regional occurrence data during 2006–2018, we here explored and compared the risk factors, with a focus on factors related to ruminant habitats, for the occurrence of PPR in sub-Saharan and northern Africa. Our results demonstrated different risk factors in the two regions. Specifically, habitat fragmentation was negatively correlated with PPR occurrence in sub-Saharan Africa, while positively correlated with PPR occurrence in northern Africa. Moreover, urbanization showed a positive association with PPR occurrence in sub-Saharan Africa. Our study is among the first, to our knowledge, to compare the risk factors for PPR in sub-Saharan and northern Africa and contributes to a better understanding of the effects of habitat characteristics on PPR occurrence at a regional scale.

Abstract
Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is endemic in Bangladesh, but its spatial distribution and risk factors have not yet been reported. Using four years of national-level, passive surveillance data (2014 to 2017), in this study we aimed to identify risk factors, create PPR risk maps and describe PPR time-space clusters. We selected PPR case records—mainly based on presumptive diagnosis of small ruminants in subdistrict veterinary hospitals—and sheep and goat population data from all 64 districts of Bangladesh. Peste des Petits Ruminants cumulative incidence per 10,000 animals at risk per district was used to conduct cluster and hotspot analysis and create predictive maps for each year and all 4 years combined. The association between PPR cumulative incidence and hypothesized risk factors—including climatic variables, elevation, road length, river length, railroad length, land cover, and water bodies—was analyzed using a geographically weighted regression model. The total number of PPR cases reported during the study period was 5.2 million. We found that most PPR cases (27.6%) were reported in the monsoon season. The highest and lowest proportions of cases were reported from Rajshahi (36.1%) and Barisal divisions (2.1%), respectively. We identified five space-time clusters, 9 high–high clusters, and 9 hotspots. The predicted cumulative incidences of PPR were persistently higher in north-east, north-west, and south-east parts of Bangladesh. Road length (P = 0.03) was positively associated with PPR incidence in Bangladesh. Results suggest that movement of animals (road length) plays an important role in the epidemiology of PPR in Bangladesh. Along with restriction of animal movement, hotspots and high–high clusters should be targeted first for immunization coverage in Bangladesh and similar PPR endemic countries to achieve eradication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a prevalent viral disease of sheep and goats that impacts productivity and international animal trade. Despite the substantial economic consequences related to PPR, little is known about the prevalence of this disease at the broad geographical levels. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to use a systematic approach to assess the regional prevalence of PPR in sheep and goats, and the associated factors that contribute to prevalence estimates. METHODS Published articles on PPR in sheep and goats were searched in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar and the reference lists of articles reporting the prevalence from 1 January 1969 to 31 December 2018. Articles were selected using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Since the heterogeneity among the studies was significant, pooled prevalences were estimated by a random effect meta-analysis model. RESULTS Data on the prevalence of PPR were obtained from Africa and Asia, where the pooled prevalence estimates were 40.99% (95% CI: 37.20%-44.79%) and 38.43% (95% CI: 35.64%-41.22%) respectively. Overall, the estimated pooled prevalence at Africa-Asia level in sheep was 39.31% (95% CI: 35.75%-42.88%) and in goats was 39.57% (95% CI: 36.66%-42.48%). Significant heterogeneity (I2 > 80%) was noted in most pooled estimates. CONCLUSION The results on the regional prevalence estimates of PPR presented here will be useful in raising awareness and advocating for Governments to engage in initiatives to eradicate PPR and prevent it from spreading to other continents.

Abstract
Peste-des-petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease of small ruminants, which is endemic in much of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. In South Asia, PPR is of significant concern to the Indian subcontinent including Bangladesh as more than 30% of the world's sheep and goats are farmed in this region, predominantly by small, poor and marginal farmers. PPR virus was detected and isolated from goat milk from field samples from PPR outbreaks (2012-2015) in Bangladesh and its full-length sequences obtained. Sequence analysis of the partial N gene of Bangladesh isolates showed 99.3%-100% identity whereas 98.2%-99.6% identity was observed when compared with neighbouring Indian viruses. Further analysis of the full-length genomes indicated that the Bangladesh isolates were 99.3%-99.99% identical among themselves and 98.3%-98.4% identical to neighbouring Indian viruses. These findings further support the transboundary transmission of PPR virus across the Indian and Bangladesh border. In additional, the establishment of a cross-border strategy between India and Bangladesh will be of paramount importance for the eradication of PPR in this region. Molecular detection and isolation of PPR virus from milk is of significant potential concern for spread of the disease to free areas as the major producers of goat milk globally are PPR endemic countries in particular India and Bangladesh, as well as Sudan. Milk is a noninvasive sample type and bulk goat milk sampling for the detection of PPRV would be of practical significance for regional surveillance of PPRV as progress is made towards the targeted 2030 eradication.

Abstract
Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), a devastating viral disease of sheep and goats, has been targeted by the global community for eradication within the next 15 years. Although an efficacious attenuated live vaccine is available, the lack of knowledge about the transmission potential of PPR virus (PPRV) may compromise eradication efforts. By fitting a metapopulation model simulating PPRV spread to the results of a nationwide serological survey in Ethiopia, we estimated the level of viral transmission in an endemic setting and the vaccination coverage required for elimination. Results suggest that the pastoral production system as a whole acts as a viral reservoir, from which PPRV spills over into the sedentary production system, where viral persistence is uncertain. Estimated levels of PPRV transmission indicate that viral spread could be prevented if the proportion of immune small ruminants is kept permanently above 37% in at least 71% of pastoral village populations. However, due to the high turnover of these populations, maintaining the fraction of immune animals above this threshold would require high vaccine coverage within villages, and vaccination campaigns to be conducted annually. Adapting vaccination strategies to the specific characteristics of the local epidemiological context and small ruminant population dynamics would result in optimized allocation of limited resources and increase the likelihood of PPR eradication.

Abstract
Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an acute, highly contagious disease responsible for high morbidity and mortality rates in susceptible sheep and goats. Adequate knowledge of the diversity of circulating strains of PPR virus will help livestock authorities choose appropriate vaccines. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology of PPR and characterize the strains circulating in Bangladesh. Veterinarians enrolled goats showing signs consistent with PPR, including diarrhoea, fever and respiratory distress, from three veterinary hospitals. Post-treatment follow up was carried out to ascertain health outcomes of the goats. Faecal and throat swab samples were collected from the goats and tested for PPRV RNA using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). Nucleotide sequence-based phylogenetic analyses of two structural genes, the nucleocapsid (N gene), and the haemagglutinin (H gene) were studied to determine the genetic variations of PPRV strains. Of the 539 goats enrolled, 38% (203/539) had detectable RNA for PPRV. We were able to follow up with 91% (184/203) of the PPRV infected goats; 44 of them died (24%). PPRV was more frequently identified in the summer (45%) than in the rainy season (29%) (Odds ratio = 1.9, 95% confidence interval: 1.3-3.1). Bangladeshi strains were phylogenetically similar to the lineage IV PPRV strains; showing particularly strong affiliation with Tibetan and Indian strains. PPR is a common viral infection of the goats in Bangladesh, with a high case-fatality rate. This study confirms the circulation of lineage IV PPRV in the country with unique amino acid substitutions in N and H proteins and provides baseline data for vaccine development and implementation.

Abstract
Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a severe infectious viral disease of domestic and wild small ruminants, and it threatens food security and livelihood of farmers across the world. In China, 292 PPR cases have been reported since it was first reported in 2007. Aiming to display the spatiotemporal patterns of PPR outbreaks and to understand its relationship with meteorological factors, we conducted a direction test, directional distribution analysis, and logistic regression analysis. The results showed that the spread of disease had a significant directional spread (P<0.05). Daily average temperature (DAT) [OR 0.063 (95% CI 0.047-0.076)], daily average relative humidity (DARH) [OR 0.871 (95% CI 0.804-0.944)], and daily hours of sunshine (DHS) [OR 0.411 (95% CI 0.389-0.582)] were inversely associated with the risk of PPR outbreak, while a positive association was observed for daily average air pressure (DAAP) [OR 1.211 (95% CI 1.036-1.417). Our findings indicate that meteorological factors may be important variables for affecting PPR transmission, and should be taken into account in the future monitoring programs for PPR.
