Abstract
Intermittent hemodialysis (IH) is an important therapy in the context of kidney dysfunction in dogs. However, its impact on pro-inflammatory cytokines is unclear. This study assessed IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α serum concentrations in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing one session of IH without bypass (IH group, n = 4) and with bypass (IH + bypass group, n = 4). The control group (CG) included four healthy dogs. Cytokine levels were measured before, during, and after the first IH session. Comparative analyses of each cytokine within each group and time point were performed, along with a global comparison between groups. No significant changes were observed in cytokines across evaluation times in the IH groups. IL-1β was significantly higher post-session in the IH and IH + bypass groups compared to CG. Globally, IL-1β and TNF-α concentrations were significantly higher in the IH (11.41 pg/mL (10-16.17) and 2 pg/mL (2-88.54), respectively) and IH + bypass groups (10 pg/mL (10-10) and 2 pg/mL (2-215.5), respectively) compared to CG (0.96 pg/mL (0-3.56) and 0 pg/mL (0-0.003), respectively). The IH group also showed elevated IL-6 concentration (0.1 ng/mL (0.1-0.5)) compared to CG (0 ng/mL (0-0.1)). Higher IL-1β and IL-6 concentrations were observed in the IH group (11.41 pg/mL (10-16.17) and 0.1 ng/mL (0.1-0.1), respectively) compared to the IH + bypass group (10 pg/mL (10-10) and 0.1 ng/mL (0.1-0.5), respectively). In conclusion, a single IH session, with or without bypass, did not increase pro-inflammatory cytokines in CKD dogs with uremic syndrome but maintained the inflammatory state. Dogs undergoing IH without bypass may receive a stronger stimulus for cytokine release.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this case series is to describe the indications, methodology, and short-term outcomes of three cats with severe azotemia managed with pleural dialysis. Case summary Three cats were presented separately to the emergency room (ER) on referral for severe azotemia of varying etiologies. Despite aggressive medical and/or surgical management, none of the cats showed improvement in their blood urea nitrogen (BUN) or creatinine values. Renal replacement therapy was recommended, but for varying reasons, the patients were unable to undergo a traditional extracorporeal method, such as intermittent hemodialysis (IDH). Instead, pleural dialysis was performed, and all three cats showed improvement in their renal values during and after their treatment. No significant complications were documented as a result of pleural dialysis. Two of the three cats were discharged from the hospital and the third cat was humanely euthanized due to poor prognosis. New or unique information provided Pleural dialysis is a novel therapeutic procedure that is not documented in veterinary or human literature. This method of renal replacement therapy was well-tolerated and had no reported complications. Careful case selection and risk-benefit analysis should be considered before attempting this procedure. Further studies are necessary to further define the utility of this therapeutic intervention, evaluate the incidence of complications, and determine long term outcomes following the procedure.

Abstract
A 5-year-old castrated male American Shorthair cat presented with lethargy and anorexia after accidentally knocking over a bottle of topical minoxidil and spilling it onto its body. Physical examination revealed rapid shallow breathing, pale mucous membranes, hypothermia, tachycardia, and hypotension. Thoracic radiography revealed mild pulmonary infiltration and pleural effusion. Despite conservative treatment, including oxygen therapy, and intravenous fluid, furosemide, and dopamine administration, the patient showed no improvement. After two sessions of intermittent hemodialysis, the cat's respiratory pattern and overall condition gradually improved; normal body temperature and blood pressure were achieved. The cat recovered fully and was discharged on the 11th day of hospitalization. This is the first report on the use of hemodialysis in the treatment of a cat with minoxidil toxicosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Outcomes of dogs with acute kidney injury secondary to leptospirosis (AKI-L) treated using renal replacement therapies (RRT) are poorly characterized. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Describe survival to discharge, short (≤30 days) and long-term (≥6 months) outcomes of AKI-L dogs receiving RRT and determine if there is a significant difference in maximum blood urea nitrogen (maxBUN), maximum creatinine (maxCr), maximum bilirubin (maxBili) and the number of body systems affected between survivors and non-survivors. ANIMALS Twenty-two client-owned dogs with AKI-L receiving RRT. METHODS Retrospective medical record review of dogs with AKI-L that received RRT between 2018 and 2021. RESULTS Sixteen of 22 (73%) dogs survived to discharge. Of the survivors, 13 (81%) were alive >30 days from discharge and 12 (75%) were alive at 6 months from discharge. Factors significantly higher in non-survivors included number of body systems affected (survivors: 1 (19%), 2 (50%), 3 (25%) and 4 (6%) vs non-survivors: 3 (33.3%), and 4 (66.7%); P = .01) and median maxBili (survivors: 1.9 mg/dL; range, 0.1-41.6 vs non-survivors: 21.0 mg/dL; range, 12.3-38.9; P = .02). There was no significant difference in median maxBUN (survivors: 153.0 mg/dL; range, 67-257 vs non-survivors: 185.5 mg/dL; range, 102-218; P = .44) and median maxCr (survivors: 9.8 mg/dL; range, 6.2-15.9 vs non-survivors: 9.8 mg/dL; range, 8.4-13.5; P = .69) between survivors and non-survivors. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Regardless of azotemia severity, dogs with AKI-L receiving RRT have a good survival rate to discharge. The number of body systems affected and hyperbilirubinemia might be associated with worse outcomes.

Abstract
Veterinary nephrology is a specialized field of veterinary medicine providing a high level of care for animals with all types of kidney disease. Veterinarians complete extensive training to become board-certified in veterinary nephrology-urology. Companion animal nephrology is the most advanced field; however, all species are afflicted by a variety of renal disorders. Most naturally occurring animal kidney diseases have similar disorders found in people; where veterinary research is lacking, clinical management is often modified from standard of care in people. Veterinarians have become adept at scaling down procedures to safely perform them on dogs and cats weighing only a few kilograms. Advanced diagnostics (renal biopsy, cystoscopy, fluoroscopic studies, etc. ) and therapeutics (renal replacement therapy, interventional endourology, etc. ) are commonly performed within the practice of veterinary nephrology-urology. Collaboration between veterinary and human nephrologists may advance both disciplines and improve care for people and animals alike.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the use of extracorporeal therapy (ECT) in the management of a dog with complications stemming from heatstroke. CASE REVIEW A 3-year-old intact male Rhodesian Ridgeback was presented for heat-related illness following strenuous exercise. Despite intensive supportive care, the dog developed progressive and refractory hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, neurologic dysfunction, acute kidney injury (AKI), and pulmonary dysfunction. Four ECT sessions were performed in this dog, consisting of 4 intermittent hemodialysis (HD) sessions, the first 2 of which concurrently utilized hemoperfusion with a cytokine adsorption filter. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, IL-10, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 were detected in samples collected during the first ECT session. Despite an initial decrease in their concentration, the concentrations of these cytokines ultimately rose over the course of the ECT session. Rapid and sustained glycemic and electrolyte control were achieved after the first ECT session, although AKI and muscle injury persisted. The dog survived to discharge and was nonazotemic 3 months following initial management. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED Heatstroke is a common, potentially catastrophic, occurrence in dogs. To the authors' knowledge, this represents the first clinical use of ECT consisting of HD and cytokine adsorption in the management of severe heat-related illness in a dog. The use of ECT for the management of complications from severe heatstroke in dogs warrants further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical outcome and complications associated with extracorporeal blood purification (EBP) using either hemodialysis (HD), hemodialysis and hemoperfusion (HD + HP), or therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) for the management of acute toxin ingestion in small animals. DESIGN Retrospective, multicenter study from January 2011 to July 2018. SETTING One university teaching hospital and one private specialty hospital. ANIMALS Fifty-one dogs and 3 cats with a history of acute toxin exposure that could lead to severe morbidity and mortality, managed with different EBP techniques. MAIN RESULTS Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (38/54, 52%), baclofen (8/54, 15%), and ethylene glycol (7/54, 13%) were the most common toxicities treated with EBP. Membrane-based TPE was used most commonly (22/54, 40.7%), followed by HD (17/54, 31.5%) and then HD + HP (15/54, 27.8%). There was an 83.3% (45/54) overall survival, with 88.9% (8/9) of nonsurvivors having clinical signs prior to therapy. One third (18/54) of the patients never developed clinical signs of toxicity. Treatment complications occurred in 44.4% (24/54) of the animals, although only 18.5% (10/54) of these complications, such as mild hypotension, thrombocytopenia secondary to the HP cartridge, facial swelling after plasma transfusion for TPE, bleeding from catheter size secondary to heparinization, or clotting of the system, could be attributed to the EBP treatment. None of the nonsurvivors died because of EBP complications. CONCLUSIONS Early initiation of EBP therapy might be considered as an alternative route of decontamination in severe acute toxicities with high potential for significant morbidity and mortality. The survival rate in small animals undergoing EBP is high despite exposure to potential lethal doses of toxins, and survival appears to be more likely if clinical signs of toxicity are not present at the time of EBP. Continued research is warranted with randomized controlled clinical trials to further evaluate the clinical efficacy and benefit of EBP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the safety and use of intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) for the emergency treatment of a cat with an amikacin overdose. CASE SUMMARY A cat was accidentally administered 400 mg (97.5 mg/kg, IV) of amikacin. Four hours after the time of the overdose, a single emergency IHD session to remove amikacin was performed. The 4-hour IHD treatment allowed for the active removal of approximately 110 mg of amikacin. The plasma concentration of amikacin from the beginning to the end of the session decreased from approximately 160 μg/mL to a nontoxic concentration of 10 μg/mL. Following IHD treatment, the cat developed an International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) grade IV acute kidney injury (AKI) with a peak creatinine of 486 μmol/L (5.5 mg/dL) and was hospitalized for 4 days for supportive management of AKI. At the time of discharge, 4 days following the overdose, the AKI had resolved. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED This is the first report describing the use and safety of using IHD for emergency removal of amikacin overdose in a cat.

Abstract
A 4-year-old female Boxer was referred for renal replacement therapy 2 days after observed grape ingestion. An 11-French dual-lumen dialysis catheter was placed into the right jugular vein and continuous renal replacement therapy was initiated for 66 h. Afterwards the patient received enoxaparin subcutaneously as a thromboprophylaxis. Four hours after removal of the dialysis catheter the patient developed severe dyspnea with hypercapnia and signs of hemorrhagic shock. Bedside ultrasound and X-rays of the thorax revealed a soft tissue opacity dorsally of the trachea, located in the mediastinum. The findings were consistent with mediastinal bleeding and hematoma formation. Blood gas examination indicated hypoventilation. The dog was managed conservatively with multiple blood transfusions and mechanical ventilation. The patient survived to discharge, and the hematoma was fully absorbed in the radiographs after 17 days. Patients with impaired kidney function should receive individualized enoxaparin dosage adjusted to anti-Xa levels and should be strictly monitored for complications. Mediastinal hemorrhage and hematoma formation should be considered as a potential complication in patients receiving a jugular vein catheter.

Abstract
Extracorporeal treatments create opportunity for removing disease causing solutes within blood. Intoxications, renal failure, and immune-mediated diseases may be managed with these treatments, often providing new hope for patients with severe or refractory disease. Understanding solute pharmacokinetics and the limitations of each type of extracorporeal technique can allow for the selection of the optimal treatment modality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the use of therapeutic membrane-based plasma exchange (TPE) for treatment of clinical signs associated with suspected acquired myasthenia gravis (MG) in 3 dogs. CASE SERIES SUMMARY Three dogs presented with clinical signs consistent with acquired MG. All 3 dogs were medically managed prior to being treated with TPE. Two of the 3 dogs had increased acetylcholine receptor antibody titers that decreased after TPE. One dog diagnosed with primary MG became clinically normal after 2 sessions of TPE and continued to do well with medical management several months later. The second dog was diagnosed with a suspect thymoma, and TPE was performed as a bridge to surgery, with marked improvement of clinical signs after TPE. The dog was ultimately diagnosed with a thymic carcinoma. The third dog had a positive acetylcholine antibody titer and was ultimately diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma (spleen and liver) and invasive mediastinal thymoma. This dog developed severe pneumonia, was ventilator dependent, and died of multiple organ dysfunction. No immediate complications were observed secondary to TPE. All 3 dogs were concurrently treated with either immunosuppressive agents, anticholinesterase drugs, or both. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED The use of TPE in dogs with MG appears to be well tolerated and safe. It may be a reasonable adjunct therapy to acetylcholinesterase drugs in cases that are not responding to medical management alone. Therapeutic plasma exchange might also be considered preoperatively to prevent postoperative complications in dogs with severe MG, although further studies should be performed.

Abstract
Case history: Two dogs presented separately to the Small Animal Hospital, University of Florida (Gainsville, FL, USA) for ingestion of ibuprofen. The first dog ingested 561.8 mg/kg ibuprofen in addition to paracetamol and caffeine and vomited prior to admission. This patient also received fluid therapy for 8 hours prior to charcoal haemoperfusion. The second dog ingested 500 mg/kg of ibuprofen and the owners induced vomiting with hydrogen peroxide prior to presentation. Due to the severity of clinical signs, both patients were treated with charcoal haemoperfusion.Clinical findings: The concentrations of ibuprofen in the blood of the dogs prior to treatment were 478 and 301 mg/L. During the treatment ibuprofen concentrations were reduced by 95.8% and 45.5%, respectively, with no treatment side effects and minimal clinical signs after treatment.Diagnosis: Toxicity due to ingestion of ibuprofen toxicity that was successfully treated with charcoal haemoperfusion.Clinical relevance: In the cases described here minimal benefit was seen after 3 hours of treatment using one haemoperfusion cartridge. This is in contrast to a previously published report in which dogs were treated for 6 hours with two charcoal haemoperfusion cartridges. This suggests that one cartridge may be sufficient. The amount of ibuprofen ingested was not a reliable predictor of the concentration in blood at the initiation of treatment. Charcoal haemoperfusion is an effective means of reducing plasma concentrations of ibuprofen, however, its use may be limited by its cost and availability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the efficacy of in-series hemoperfusion and hemodialysis in 2 dogs with carprofen overdose. CASE SUMMARY This report describes the treatment of 2 dogs following accidental carprofen overdoses who underwent a single in-series hemoperfusion and hemodialysis session. Serial serum carprofen concentrations were measured before, during, and after the session. The first patient's session lasted 5 hours, with the largest decrease in serum carprofen concentrations occurring during the first hour of treatment. The carprofen clearance during the following 4 hours of treatment decreased substantially compared to the first hour and was not different from the patient's intrinsic clearance of carprofen after the session was completed. Based on the findings from the first case, the second patient was treated with a 1 hour single hemoperfusion and hemodialysis session. Our results support the hypothesis that carprofen is not effectively removed by conventional hemodialysis and the efficacy of hemoperfusion is short lived due to rapid saturation of the charcoal filter. Once filter saturation occurs, the extracorporeal session is no longer efficacious. Using in-series hemoperfusion and hemodialysis is of benefit to correct the side effects seen with hemoperfusion alone, and hourly charcoal filter replacement may extend the efficacy of treatment in removing carprofen. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED This is the first published report of in-series hemoperfusion and hemodialysis being used to treat carprofen overdose in a dog. In these 2 cases, the intrinsic clearances of the patients were shown to be equivalent to that of standard hemodialysis alone, indicating that hemodialysis does not produce any advantage in carprofen clearance. In this limited report, we suggest that the efficacy of hemoperfusion in removing carprofen is short-lived, and extending the treatment beyond the first hour does not produce any therapeutic benefit. In order to extend the efficacy of hemoperfusion, hourly replacement of the charcoal filter should be considered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate dogs treated with hemodialysis for severe metaldehyde intoxication and to compare them with conventionally-managed patients. DESIGN Retrospective study (2012-2017). SETTING University teaching hospital. ANIMALS Data from 18 dogs with severe metaldehyde intoxication were analyzed. Eleven dogs were treated with intermittent hemodialysis and 7 managed conventionally. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENT AND MAIN RESULTS Metaldehyde poisoning was diagnosed based on clinical signs and toxicological analysis or presence of turquoise material in the gastrointestinal content. Clinical signs, additional treatments, dialysis prescription, duration of anesthesia and hospitalization, complications, and outcome were documented. Results were analyzed by t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Chi-square test. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Dialysis was performed for median (range) 180 min (150-420 min) with median of 2.28 L/kg (1.66-4.48 L/kg) blood volume processed. In the hemodialysis group, anesthesia was discontinued at a median of 3.0 hours (1.5-6.7 h) after starting dialysis. The conventional-group received general anesthesia for a median of 17.5 hours (7.0-30.5 h). No further anticonvulsive treatment was necessary for the hemodialysis group. Time to hospital discharge was shorter in dialyzed dogs (median 18 h; 15-41 h) compared to conventionally treated dogs (median 89 h; 61-168 h; P = 0.0014). Aspiration pneumonia was reported in 5 conventionally treated dogs and none of the dialyzed dogs (P = 0.001). Five dialyzed dogs developed hematoma at the dialysis catheter site. One dog in each group was euthanized. CONCLUSION Hemodialysis significantly decreases the requirement for anesthesia and length of hospitalization in dogs with metaldehyde intoxication. Aspiration pneumonia occurred less often in dialyzed patients. Prospective studies are warranted to confirm the clinical utility of hemodialysis in dogs with metaldehyde poisoning.

Abstract
Extracorporeal renal replacement therapy (ERRT) used in dogs with acute kidney injury (AKI) may be associated with hematological and hemostatic disorders. However, its characteristics are not fully described in dogs. The purpose of this pilot study was to characterize the impact of ERRT on hematological, hemostatic, and thromboelastometric parameters in dogs with AKI. We conducted a prospective observational single cohort study in 10 client-owned dogs with AKI associated leptospirosis undergoing ERRT. Results from the CBC, coagulation tests (prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times [aPTT]) and rotational thromboelastometry (TEM; intrinsic TEM [inTEM] and heparinase-based TEM [hepTEM]) were recorded before and after the first ERRT session. Blood abnormalities observed before the ERRT session included thrombocytopenia (10/10), anemia (8/10), leukocytosis (4/10), prolonged aPTT (4/10) and leukopenia (1/10). After ERRT, the platelet count decreased (-25%; P = .012) whereas leukocytes (+15%; P = .046) and aPTT (+24%; P = .006) increased. The clotting time (CT) on inTEM assay and the relative variation of CT based on inTEM and hepTEM profiles increased after the ERRT session (P = .037 and P = .048, respectively). Seven dogs, 2 dogs, and 1 dog were defined as having a normal, hypocoagulable, and hypercoagulable inTEM profile after ERRT, respectively. After ERRT, no hepTEM parameter was significantly different from before treatment. Platelet count, leukocytes, aPTT and CT were altered after the first ERRT session. Beyond the hemostatic abnormalities expected by the use of UFH, thrombocytopenia appears as the only hemostatic change after a single ERRT session in dogs with AKI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a methylated arginine derived from intranuclear methylation of l-arginine by protein-arginine methyltransferase and released into circulation after proteolysis. It is primarily eliminated by renal excretion, and its concentration is highly correlated with glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in animals and humans and is an earlier indicator of kidney dysfunction than serum creatinine concentration (sCr). OBJECTIVES To evaluate and quantify the effects of IV fluid therapy (IF) or intermittent hemodialysis (IH) on renal function in a randomized group of dogs previously diagnosed with International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD). ANIMALS Twenty-four client-owned dogs with naturally occurring CKD. METHODS Serum from 14 dogs treated by IH and 10 dogs treated with IF was submitted for measurement of sCr and SDMA. Dogs in each treatment group received up to 5 treatment sessions, administered 48 hours apart. RESULTS Significant differences (P ≤ .05) were seen between treatment groups, but dogs from the IH group were the most affected based on SDMA (P < .001), sCr (P < .001), and blood urea (P < .001) concentrations. Furthermore, for each 10% increase in urea reduction ratio, there was a 6.2 μg/dL decrease in SDMA (P = .002). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Although SDMA is dialyzable biomarker and despite its removal by IH, SDMA correlates better with renal function than does sCr in dogs with CKD undergoing IF and IH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Veterinary studies describing acute kidney injury (AKI) management using renal replacement therapy (RRT) are limited and have primarily focused on intermittent haemodialysis in North American populations. European data are lacking, although differences in populations, pathogen and toxin exposure and RRT modalities may exist between Europe and North America. The present study reviewed RRT-managed cases from the intensive care unit (ICU) of VetAgro Sup, Lyon, France, for the period 2012-2015. The aims were to describe a 4-h RRT protocol of intermittent low efficiency haemodiafiltration, population characteristics and outcomes in canine AKI cases requiring RRT and to identify prognostic variables. We defined DeltaCreat/h as the difference between the serum creatinine level after RRT treatment N and that before treatment N + 1 divided by the time between treatments (in hours). RESULTS Thirty-nine dogs were included, and 67% were males. The median (range) age, weight, hospitalization length and number of RRT treatments were 4.4 (0.25-15) years, 26.6 (6.7-69) kg, 8 (1-23) days and 3 (1-8) treatments, respectively. The main AKI causes were leptospirosis (74.4%) and nephrotoxins (15.4%). Age (4.0 vs 5.4 years; P = 0.04), admission urine output (0.5 mL/kg/h vs 0 mL/kg/h; P = 0.02) and hospitalization length (10 vs 4 days; P < 0.001) differed between survivors and non-survivors. Hospitalization length [odds ratio (OR) = 0.4], number of treatments (OR = 5.1), serum potassium level on day 2 (OR = 1.9), DeltaCreat/h between the first and second treatments (OR = 1.2), and UOP during hospitalization (OR = 0.2) were correlated with outcome. The main causes of death were euthanasia (44%) and haemorrhagic diatheses (33%). The overall survival rate was 54%, with 55% of survivors discharged with a median creatinine < 240 µmol/L. CONCLUSIONS This is the first description in the veterinary literature of a 4-h protocol of intermittent low efficiency haemodiafiltration to provide RRT in a veterinary critical care unit. While this protocol appears promising, the clinical application of this protocol requires further investigation. Among parameters associated with survival, UOP and DeltaCreat/h between the first and second RRT treatments may be prognostic indicators. The applicability of these parameters to other populations is unknown, and further international, multicentre prospective studies are warranted to confirm these preliminary observations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the successful management of acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to oak intoxication using hemodialysis in a miniature zebu. CASE SUMMARY A 1-year-old male intact miniature zebu was presented for evaluation of a 2-day history of lethargy, anorexia, decreased urine production, and dry, firm stool. Initial diagnostics revealed severe azotemia and the bull was presumptively diagnosed with AKI secondary to oak intoxication due to free access to oak trees in the pasture. Despite conventional management with IV fluids and supportive therapy, the degree of azotemia progressively worsened, and the bull became oliguric and fluid overloaded. Two treatments with hemodialysis resulted in reduction of azotemia and ketonemia, and resolution of fluid overload and oliguria. The zebu was discharged from the hospital after 10 days of hospitalization. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case using hemodialysis for AKI in a bovid. Treatment with hemodialysis was effective in this case resulting in rapid resolution of azotemia, fluid overload, and oliguria. Hemodialysis may hasten the recovery and decrease morbidity and mortality in bovids with AKI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the management of cyclosporine overdose using hemodialysis and hemoperfusion in a dog. CASE SUMMARY A 6-year-old, spayed female Australian Shepherd was presented for treatment of cyclosporine overdose and acute kidney injury. Five days prior to presentation, the dog had been diagnosed by its referring veterinarian with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. Treatment was initiated with prednisone, but since no response was noted, azathioprine (50 mg PO q 24 h) and cyclosporine (6 mg/kg IV q 24 h) were added. On day 4, an overdose of cyclosporine (33 mg/kg IV) was administered accidentally. Upon presentation, serum biochemistry panel revealed azotemia [creatinine, 521.6 μmol/L (5.9 mg/dL); BUN, 59.3 mmol/L (166 mg/dL)], increased activities of liver enzymes, and hyperbilirubinemia. Due to the presumed diagnosis cyclosporine overdose and acute kidney injury, a combined hemodialysis and charcoal hemoperfusion treatment was planned. Hemosorba CH-350 charcoal hemoperfusion cartridge was placed in series upstream in the extracorporeal circuit from the hemodialyzer. A 3-hour treatment was performed and a total of 0.74 L/kg of blood was processed. Pretreatment blood cyclosporine concentration was 960 nmol/L (1154 ng/mL) and decreased to 440 nmol/L (529 ng/mL) posttreatment (54% fractional reduction, 18% per hour). Thirty-one hours following treatment, blood cyclosporine concentration was 220 nmol/L (265 ng/mL; 1.5% decrease per hour). Twelve days following presentation to our hospital, the dog was euthanized due to lack of response to medical management. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED Combined hemodialysis and charcoal hemoperfusion treatment can significantly reduce blood cyclosporine concentrations following acute intoxication or overdosage, and should be considered as an option for decontamination in such cases.

Abstract
Continuous renal replacement therapy is an emerging technique for the treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI). Data regarding its use in cats are limited. This report describes the use of a novel continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) system for the treatment of AKI in a cat. A 1.3-year-old cat developed uraemic signs following the administration of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of a suspect traumatic episode. CRRT was provided with a Prismaflex Gambro machine used in continuous venovenous haemodiafiltration mode, with an AN-69 surface-treated membrane, synthetic colloid priming and heparin anticoagulation. Two treatment cycles were performed, totalling 51 h of CRRT. The treatment was effective in controlling uraemic signs, and no major complications were noted. Owing to financial constraints the owners declined further CRRT treatments, and on day 8 of hospitalisation, owing to the lack of significant clinical improvement, humane euthanasia was performed. The set-up detailed in this report provides a viable option for the initial treatment of cats with AKI.
