Abstract
A 13-year-old Maltese dog with an abdominal mass underwent 18F-FDG PET/computed tomography (CT) for tumor localization and metastatic evaluation. PET/CT scans revealed a gastric mass near the esophagogastric junction and demonstrated mean and maximum standardized uptake values (SUVs) of 4.596 and 6.234, respectively, for the abdominal mass. Subsequent surgery incorporated ICG for NIR fluorescence-guided imaging, aiding in precise tumor localization and margin assessment. The excised mass was identified as a low-grade leiomyosarcoma on histopathology. The dog underwent PET/CT imaging six months postoperatively following the excision of the mass, which confirmed the absence of recurrence or residual lesions during follow-up. NIR fluorescence imaging using ICG demonstrated efficacy in real-time tumor visualization and margin assessment, a technique not previously reported in veterinary literature. The PET/CT findings complemented the diagnosis and provided valuable insights into metastasis. The absence of recurrence or complications in postoperative follow-up underscores the potential of these imaging modalities in enhancing surgical precision and improving prognosis in canine gastric tumors.

Abstract
This report describes a suspected case of paraneoplastic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) in a 5-year-old male entire Australian Kelpie associated with a gastric adenocarcinoma. The dog had a history of chronic vomiting and presented with hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia, hypochloraemia and increased urinary sodium. Computed tomography identified the presence of a gastric tumour and histopathology confirmed a pyloric gastric adenocarcinoma. Removal of the tumour via a Billroth I procedure resulted in rapid resolution of electrolyte derangements. The dog was still alive six months postoperatively with no recurrence of either SIADH or tumour at the time of publication.

Abstract
Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common human cancer worldwide, but the genetic etiology is largely unknown. We performed a Bayesian genome-wide association study and selection analyses in a naturally-occurring canine model of GC, the Belgian Tervuren and Sheepdog breeds, to elucidate underlying genetic risk factors. We identified 15 loci with over 90% predictive accuracy for the GC phenotype. Variant filtering revealed germline putative regulatory variants for the EPAS1 (HIF2A) and PTEN genes and a coding variant in CD101. Although closely related to Tervuren and Sheepdogs, Belgian Malinois rarely develop GC. Across-breed analyses uncovered protective haplotypes under selection in Malinois at SOX2-OT and IGF2BP2. Among Tervuren and Sheepdogs, HDAC2 putative regulatory variants were present at comparatively high frequency and were associated with GC. Here, we describe a complex genetic architecture governing GC in a dog model, including genes such as PDZRN3, that have not been associated with human GC.

Abstract
Progressive carcinogenesis of a gastric polyp with transformation to gastric adenocarcinoma and subsequent development of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis is described in an adult male Scottish terrier. Presenting clinical signs consisted of vomiting with intermittent hematemesis. Surgical biopsies over the course of 14 months documented the progression from gastric polyp to minimally invasive gastric carcinoma to invasive gastric adenocarcinoma, a pathogenesis not previously documented in veterinary oncology. The patient ultimately developed neurologic pathology and was euthanized, and necropsy evaluation identified widespread carcinomatosis with accompanying leptomeningeal metastasis. As in humans, gastric polyps in dogs rarely have malignant potential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility of laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy (LVSG) in feline cadavers using endoscopic stapling equipment and report clinical outcomes in two live feline subjects. STUDY DESIGN Cadaveric study and experimental case series. ANIMALS Ten feline cadavers; two feline subjects. METHODS LVSG technique was refined on feline cadavers and included retraction of the liver, dissection of the stomach, assessment of proper location for gastrectomy via stapling, and leak testing. Appropriateness of gastrectomy, gastrectomy %, surgical times and complications were recorded. The procedure was performed on two live feline subjects, and they were followed for 4 months to report surgical complications. RESULTS LVSG was completed in 9/10 cadavers and both live patients. Stenosis at the incisura was recorded in 2/9 cadavers. No obvious leaks were seen in the 8 cadavers that were tested or either live patient. The mean surgical time for all cadaver procedures and live patients was 110.4 and 115 minutes, respectively. Mean weight of resected cadaver stomach was 10 g and the mean % of the total stomach weight resected was 27.6%. No intra- or postoperative surgical complications occurred in the live subjects. CONCLUSION LVSG technique appears feasible and safe for use in live patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This LVSG technique may be safely used for partial gastric resection in cats. Further studies are necessary to determine if it is effective at reversing the effects of obesity and diabetes in this population.

Abstract
Simple Summary Currently, canine gastric carcinoma is mainly diagnosed in its late, incurable phase, and strategies for early diagnosis are lacking. In human medicine, chromoendoscopic (CE) methods such as staining the gastric mucosal surface with indigo carmine (IC), and narrow band imaging (NBI), have improved the diagnosis of precancerous gastric mucosal changes and early gastric carcinoma. This study aimed at investigating whether IC-CE and NBI-CE can improve the diagnostic yield of endoscopy in dogs. Belgian Shepherd dogs are predisposed to gastric carcinoma; thus, 30 dogs of the breed served as the study population. As a result, the study revealed that especially the combination of standard white light endoscopy (WLE) with NBI-CE allows better recognition of gastric mucosal structural changes than WLE alone. However, CE assessment templates used to predict the type of mucosal change in humans were not applicable in dogs. The value of the study lies in providing evidence that CE can improve the diagnosis of precancerous changes and early gastric carcinoma in dogs. However, current image assessment templates from human medicine need major adjustments to comprehend canine gastric mucosal conditions. Abstract Chromoendoscopy has improved the early diagnosis of gastric cancer in humans but its usefulness in dogs is unknown. This study aimed at assessing whether adding narrow band imaging (NBI) or indigo carmine (IC) chromoendoscopy (CE) can improve the diagnostic yield of standard white light endoscopy (WLE). We compared the real-time findings of canine WLE, NBI-CE, and IC-CE and corresponding histology reports with endoscopic mucosal pattern assessment templates used in human medicine. Belgian Shepherd dogs are predisposed to gastric carcinoma. Therefore, 30 dogs of this breed served as the study population. According to histology, 17/30 dogs had mucosal changes (mucous metaplasia, glandular dysplasia, and gastric carcinoma). Diagnostic yield was best when targeted biopsies were taken with WLE and NBI-CE combined (15/17 cases). WLE alone positively identified only 8/17 cases and missed a gastric carcinoma in 3/6 cases. CE assessment templates based on macroscopic mucosal patterns, broadly used in human medicine, were not readily applicable in dogs. In conclusion, the study provides evidence that using CE in dogs has the potential to improve the diagnosis of precancerous gastric mucosal pathology and early gastric carcinoma. However, current image assessment templates from human medicine need major adjustments to the patterns of canine gastric mucosa.

Surgery is the first-line treatment; however, it is associated with several complications. Nevertheless, chemotherapy to treat canine gastric cancer has not received much attention, probably due to its late diagnosis, fast progression, low median survival time, and very high mortality rate, along with the lack of publications with concrete scientific results. In this review, we explore the pharmacological approach used in treatment of this often-fatal disease. The incidence of GC is lower in dogs than in humans, accounting for less than 1% of all canine malignancies. In recent years, efforts have been made to understand the pathogenesis of GC and in find an appropriate therapy to maximize curative results, such as adjuvant chemotherapy treatments in addition to surgery. Although surgery is the first-line treatment, it is associated with several complications. In terms of chemotherapeutic intervention, canine gastric cancer has not received much attention, probably due to its late diagnosis, fast progression, low median survival time, and very high mortality rate, along with the lack of publications with concrete scientific results. In this review, we explore canine GC and the pharmacological approach used in the treatment of this often-fatal disease.

Abstract
E-cadherin (E-cad) is a cell-adhesion molecule known for its tumor-invasion suppressor function. E-cad expression was examined immunohistochemically in a series of canine tissue samples, including normal gastric mucosa (NGM; n = 3), gastric carcinomas (GC; n = 33), adjacent non-neoplastic mucosa (NNM; n = 32), neoplastic emboli (n = 16) and metastatic lesions (n = 9). The relationship between E-cad expression and clinicopathological features were investigated. In NGM, epithelial cells showed strong latero-lateral membranous expression of E-cad, and this pattern was considered normal. The membranous staining was preserved in all specimens of NNM (100%), whereas abnormal E-cad expression was found in 87.9% of the GCs. A marked difference in E-cad expression was observed between normal and malignant tissues (p < 0.0002). Abnormal E-cad expression was significantly more frequent in poorly/undifferentiated carcinomas (96%) and diffuse (95%) and indeterminate carcinomas (100%) than in well-differentiated/intestinal ones (62.5%; p = 0.0115 and p = 0.0392, respectively). There was significant association between abnormal E-cad expression and the depth of invasion (p = 0.0117), and the presence neoplastic emboli (p = 0.0194). No statistically significant differences in E-cad expression were observed concerning tumor location, histological type according to WHO classification, and presence of metastatic lesions. Therefore, deregulation of E-cad expression may play a role in canine gastric carcinogenesis and in tumor progression; moreover, it might be a prognostic tool for canine gastric cancer.

Abstract
Simple Summary Gastric carcinoma (GC) is the second leading cause of death in humans and the most frequent malignancy in the stomach of dogs. As in humans, the prognosis of canine gastric cancer is generally poor owing to the advanced stage at the time of diagnosis, resulting in limited treatment options. In dogs, the molecular mechanisms involved in the growth and progression of gastric cancer remain largely unknown. Trefoil factor 1 (TFF1) protein is a mucin-associated secretory molecule that plays an important role in the maintenance and protection of epithelial surface integrity. Some human studies showed that TFF1 can protect mucosa against damage and suppress carcinogenesis, while other studies showed that TFF1 can restrict cell adhesion, promote tumor cell invasion, and block necrosis of tumor cells. In human gastric cancer, TFF1 has been found to decrease, and it has been proposed that it might act as a tumor suppressor factor. The present study was carried out to investigate whether there is a relationship between TFF1 and canine gastric carcinogenesis. We found an association between reduced expression of TFF1 and the development and progression of gastric cancer in dogs. The pathological and behavioral similarities between spontaneous canine GC and human counterparts make it logical to assume that dogs may be a useful model for human gastric cancer. Abstract TFF1 expression is markedly reduced in human GCs, suggesting that TFF1 is a tumor suppressor for human gastric cancer. The present study evaluated the expression and distribution pattern of TFF1 in paraffin-embedded canine gastric tissue samples, including normal mucosa (n = 3), polyps (n = 8), carcinomas (n = 31) and their adjacent non-neoplastic mucosa (n = 30), neoplastic emboli (n = 14), and metastatic lesions (n = 9), by immunohistochemistry (IHC). All normal gastric tissues expressed TFF1 in the superficial foveolar epithelium and mucopeptic cells of the neck region. Most gastric polyps (GPs) displayed immunoreactivity for TFF1 in >75% of the epithelial component. In GCs, the expression of TFF1 was found reduced in 74.2% of the cases. The level of TFF1 expression had a decreased tendency from normal gastric mucosa to GPs and GCs (p < 0.05). No significant differences in the expression of TFF1 were found in GCs, according to age, sex, histological type based on World Health Organization (WHO) and Lauren classification, tumor location, depth of tumor invasion, presence of neoplastic emboli or metastatic lesions. The median survival time of GC patients with preserved and reduced TFF1 immunoexpression were 30 and 12 days, respectively. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed no significant survival differences between the two groups (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that TFF1 protein may play a role in canine gastric carcinogenesis, and further studies are necessary to define its usefulness as a prognostic indicator in canine gastric carcinoma.

Diagnosis of gastric tumors in dogs is difficult and is often obtained by biopsy following identification of a mass through ultrasound (US) or endoscopy. In human medicine, modalities such as CT and endoscopy are standard of care in the diagnosis and staging of gastric tumors. Although one veterinary study has described CT findings of gastric tumors in dogs using iatrogenic gas dilation, there are no veterinary studies that have directly compared the usefulness of US versus CT in the diagnosis and staging of these tumors. This retrospective, descriptive study evaluated US and CT images from 13 dogs. Gastric tumor diagnoses included leiomyoma (n = 4), adenocarcinoma (n = 3), leiomyosarcoma (n = 3), gastrointestinal stromal tumor (n = 2), and lymphoma (n = 1). Computed tomography was successful in identification of 92% of gastric tumors, while US identified only 69%. Computed tomography identified more locations of lymphadenopathy and correctly identified the location of gastric tumors more frequently than US when compared to the surgical, endoscopic, or necropsy reports. Most features seen on US and CT overlapped between the different tumor types. Lymphoma had a lower mean attenuation in CT than the other gastric tumors and was the only gastric tumor to not have complete loss of the gastric wall layering on US. As expected, adenocarcinoma appeared as gastric wall thickening with regional lymphadenopathy. Findings supported using CT as an ancillary diagnostic test for characterizing and staging gastric tumors in dogs and assisting in the selection of surgical candidates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric carcinoma (GC) is uncommon in dogs, except in predisposed breeds such as Belgian Shepherd dogs (BSD) of the Tervuren and Groenendael varieties. When GC is diagnosed in dogs it is often late in the disease, resulting in a poorer prognosis. The aim of this prospective clinical study was to investigate possible associations of gastric mucosal pathologies with clinical signs, laboratory test results and GC in BSD. An online survey gathered epidemiological data to generate potential risk factors for vomiting as the predominant gastric clinical sign, and supported patient recruitment for endoscopy. Canine Chronic Enteropathy Clinical Activity Index (CCECAI) score and signs of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) were used to allocate BSD older than five years to either Group A, with signs of gastric disease, or Group B, without signs. Findings in the clinical history, laboratory tests and gastric histopathology of endoscopic biopsies were statistically analysed in search of associations. RESULTS The online survey included 232 responses. Logistic regression analysis recognized an association of vomiting with gagging, poor appetite and change in attitude. Recruitment for endoscopy included 16 BSD in Group A (mean age 9.1 ± 1.8 years, mean CCECAI = 3.1 ± 2.2 and signs of GER); and 11 in Group B (mean age 9.8 ± 1.4 years, CCECAI = 0, no signs of GER). Seven (25.9%) of the 27 BSD (Group A 4/16, Group B 3/11) had leukopenia. Serum C-reactive protein tended to be increased with more advanced GC (P = 0.063). Frequency of GC, mucosal atrophy, mucous metaplasia, or glandular dysplasia did not differ between groups. GC was frequently diagnosed (6/27), even without clinical signs (2/11). The odds ratio for vomiting (OR = 9.9; P = 0.016) was increased only when glandular dysplasia was present. GC was associated with mucous metaplasia (P = 0.024) and glandular dysplasia (P = 0.006), but not with mucosal atrophy (P = 1). CONCLUSIONS GC can develop as an occult disease, associated with metaplasia and dysplasia of the gastric mucosa. Suggestive clinical signs, notably vomiting, should warrant timely endoscopy in BSD. Extensive endoscopic screening of asymptomatic dogs remains, however, unrealistic. Therefore, biomarkers of mucosal pathology preceding clinical illness are needed to support an indication for endoscopy and enable early diagnosis of GC.

Abstract
There has been an increase in the number of Jack Russell Terriers (JRTs) diagnosed with
adenomas and adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract in Japan. This study
retrospectively investigated the clinical and histopathological features and prognosis of
adenocarcinomas arising in the gastrointestinal tract in JRT dogs. Seven JRTs and 39 dogs
of other breeds diagnosed with gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma were included in the study.
The most common sites of gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma in JRTs were the pylorus and
rectum. On histopathological examination, these adenocarcinomas showed a papillary or
tubular growth pattern, and the lesions were confined within the mucosal epithelium and
poorly invasive. Among all dogs with gastric adenocarcinoma, the median survival time
(MST) for five of the JRTs could not be determined because more than half of the cases
remained alive, while the MST for nine non-JRT dogs was 34 days. Among all dogs with
adenocarcinoma in the large intestine, the MST for three of the JRTs could not be
determined, while the MST for nine non-JRT dogs was 1,973 days. The difference in MST
between JRT and non-JRT dogs with gastric adenocarcinoma was significant
(P=0.0220). Since gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas in JRTs show
distinct characteristics with respect to their clinical features, treatment course, and
prognosis, a different surgical and medical treatment plan should be considered compared
to the management of gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas in other dog breeds.

Do Canine Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms Resemble Human Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumours? A Comparative Morphological and Immunohistochemical Investigation. J Comp Pathol 2020; 181:73-85. Abstract
Although canine pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNENs) have been proposed as a model for the counterpart human neoplasms, the type or grade of human PanNEN that they resemble is unclear. PanNENs in animals are classified as adenoma or carcinoma, whereas in humans they are classified as pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour (PanNET) if well-differentiated, or as pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma (PanNEC) if poorly differentiated. We evaluated 16 canine primary PanNENs and two metastases histologically and immunohistochemically, and graded them using the animal and human grading systems. All neoplasms had local or vascular invasion and were classified as pancreatic islet cell carcinomas according to the current WHO classification. The Ki-67 index was low in all cases (0.01-1.50%). All had cytoplasmic expression of synaptophysin and insulin but were immunonegative for glucagon, confirming a functional diagnosis of canine insulinoma. Membranous expression of SSTR2A and nuclear expression of ATRX, but no p53 expression, was found in all neoplasms. One primary tumour was diagnosed as a mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm, which is the first report of this neoplasm in dogs. The other 15 primary tumours and both metastatic tumours were graded as PanNET G1, according to the human WHO classification. We conclude that canine PanNENs share well-differentiated histomorphology, SSTR2A expression and absence of nuclear p53 immunolabelling with human PanNETs G1. However, they differ in ATRX gene expression and functionality, and seem to have a worse prognosis than human PanNETs G1, although their generally low Ki-67 index precludes more precise assessment of prognosis. Membranous SSTR2A expression renders canine PanNENs potentially amenable to treatment with somatostatin analogues or SSTR targeted in-vivo imaging methods.
