Effects of olive oil mill waste water (OMWW) on the frog larvae

In this research, acute effect of the olive oil mill wastewater (OMWW) on the frog larvae has been studied. Larvae showed hyperactivity symptoms first and loss of balance and remained motionless due to toxicity of wastewater. Toxicity was observed between 2 and 159 min depending on the test concentrations. Upon removing the phenolic compounds from the OMWW, this effect was seen after 248 min. Potential effects of the OMWW in Lake Iznik were also researched. Salinity of the lake water changed from 0.2 ‰ to 0.0 ‰ respectively in the measurements done in May and December.

Prolactin increases open-channel density of epithelial Na+ channel in adult frog skin

The short-term effect of prolactin on the skin of the adult tree frog Hyla arborea japonica was investigated using current-fluctuation analysis. Basolateral application of ovine prolactin (10 microg ml(-1)) (1) increased the amiloride-blockable short-circuit current (SCC) across the skin 2.6+/-0.4-fold and (2) increased the open-channel density (M) of the epithelial Na(+) channel 6.1+/-1.2-fold but decreased the single-channel current i to 0.4+/-0.1 times the control value (N=9). The increase in SCC induced by prolactin was thus due to an increase in M, not i. Apparently, in amphibians prolactin has not only a counteracting effect on metamorphosis but also a stimulatory effect on the development of adult-type features, such as this amiloride-blockable SCC.

Hormonal effect on the osmotic, electrolyte and nitrogen balance in terrestrial Amphibia

Two main hormones regulate water balance in amphibian. First, mesotocin (MT) acting as a diuretic agent, and second arginine vasotocin (AVT) being an anti-diuretic hormone. In addition, prolactin (PRL), aldosterone, corticosterone, angiotensin II and atriunatriuretic hormones, play a role too in regulating water and ion balance. The hormones affect the epidermis and bladder permeability to water and ions as well as the kidney through the control of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The main questions concern the presence and action of these hormones during the amphibian's life history. Are they present in both larval and adult stages? Are these hormones being synthesized in both aquatic and terrestrial adult phases? Under what circumstances are they being stored or released? Would the target organs (epidermis, bladder, kidney) respond in a similar way during all periods? The problem is the fact that under most circumstances an amphibian while in an aquatic environment responds physiologically differently than when on land. Only partial information concerning hormone presence, release and control of water balance is available at the moment, and even that is fragmentary and based on only a very small number of amphibian species.

Alteration of membrane permeability by amphotericin B

Amphotericin B (AmB) increased unidirectional Na transport and net transcellular sodium movements across the skin of the frog, Rana pipiens, when added to the solution bathing the corium side, but not from the outer epidermal surface. The AmB response was prevented with pretreatment with amiloride, ouabain and mucosal sodium substitution. Alteration in pH markedly reduced the permeability changes induced by AmB. AmB did not interfere with the increase in sodium transport induced by antidiuretic hormone. The present study demonstrates that AmB interacts with the skin of the frog, Rana pipiens, from the corium side specifically increasing transepithelial sodium transport. The increase in transport apparently occurs through the existing sodium pathway.

Influence of Ca2+ on the mechanosensitivity of the hair cells in the lateral line organs of Necturus maculosus

The degree of synchronization (DOS) between the afferent spike activity from one stitch of the lateral line of Necturus maculosus (in vivo) and the mechanical stimulation of one neuromast of the same stitch was measured under different circumstances. The DOS was found to be independent of changes in the concentration of monovalent cations (Na+, K+ and choline+) in the bulk solution at high Ca concentration (1 mM). DOS was also independent of the Ca concentration in the range 1 mM-1 microM in Tris-HCl buffer, but was markedly reduced at Ca = 10 microM in MOPS-KOH buffer. The reduced DOS, however, could be restored by addition of 10-20 mM KCl. 5 mM of 4-aminopyridine did not influence the DOS at high Ca concentration, but completely reduced DOS at Ca = 10 microM. D600 (a methoxy derivative of verapamil) decreased DOS both at high and low Ca concentration.
