Abstract
We tested a hypothesis on force-stabilizing synergies during four-finger accurate force production at three levels: (1) The level of the reciprocal and coactivation commands, estimated as the referent coordinate and apparent stiffness of all four fingers combined; (2) The level of individual finger forces; and (3) The level of firing of individual motor units (MU). Young, healthy participants performed accurate four-finger force production at a comfortable, non-fatiguing level under visual feedback on the total force magnitude. Mechanical reflections of the reciprocal and coactivation commands were estimated using small, smooth finger perturbations applied by the "inverse piano" device. Firing frequencies of motor units in the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and extensor digitorum communis (EDC) were estimated using surface recording. Principal component analysis was used to identify robust MU groups (MU-modes) with parallel changes in the firing frequency. The framework of the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis was used to compute synergy indices in the spaces of referent coordinate and apparent stiffness, finger forces, and MU-mode magnitudes. Force-stabilizing synergies were seen at all three levels. They were present in the MU-mode spaces defined for MUs in FDS, in EDC, and pooled over both muscles. No effects of hand dominance were seen. The synergy indices defined at different levels of analysis showed no correlations across the participants. The findings are interpreted within the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates for the effectors. We conclude that force stabilization gets contributions from three levels of neural control, likely associated with cortical, subcortical, and spinal circuitry.

Abstract
We review a body of literature related to the drawing and recognition of geometrical two-dimensional linear drawings including letters. Handwritten letters are viewed not as two-dimensional geometrical objects but as one-dimensional trajectories of the tip of the implement. Handwritten letters are viewed as composed of a small set of kinematic primitives. Recognition of objects is mediated by processes of their creation (actual or imagined)-the imitation principle, a particular example of action-perception coupling. The concept of spatial directional field guiding the trajectories is introduced and linked to neuronal population vectors. Further, we link the kinematic description to the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates. This framework allows interpreting a number of experimental observations and clinical cases of agnosia. It also allows formulating predictions for new experimental studies of writing.

Abstract
We studied anticipatory and compensatory postural adjustments (APAs and CPAs) associated with self-triggered postural perturbations in conditions with changes in the initial body orientation. In particular, we were testing hypotheses on adjustments in the reciprocal and coactivation commands, role of proximal vs. distal muscles, and correlations between changes in indices of APAs and CPAs. Healthy young participants stood on a board with full support or reduced support area and held a standard load in the extended arms. They released the load in a self-paced manned with a standard small-amplitude arm movement. Electromyograms of 12 muscles were recorded and used to compute reciprocal and coactivation indices between three muscle pairs on both sides of the body. The subject's body was oriented toward one of three targets: straight ahead, 60° to the left, and 60° to the right. Body orientation has stronger effects on proximal muscle pairs compared to distal muscles. It led to more consistent changes in the reciprocal command compared to the coactivation command. Indices of APAs and CPAs showed positive correlations across conditions. We conclude that the earlier suggested hierarchical relations between the reciprocal and coactivation command could be task-specific. Predominance of negative or positive correlations between APA and CPA indices could also be task-specific.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Spinal cord injury (SCI) damages synaptic connections between corticospinal axons and motoneurons of many muscles, resulting in devastating paralysis. We hypothesized that strengthening corticospinal-motoneuronal synapses at multiple spinal cord levels through Hebbian plasticity (i.e., "neurons that fire together, wire together") promotes recovery of leg and arm function. METHODS Twenty participants with chronic SCI were randomly assigned to receive 20 sessions of Hebbian or sham stimulation targeting corticospinal-motoneuronal synapses of multiple leg muscles followed by exercise. Based on the results from this study, in a follow-up prospective study, 11 more participants received 40 sessions of Hebbian stimulation targeting corticospinal-motoneuronal synapses of multiple arm and leg muscles followed by exercise. During Hebbian stimulation sessions, 180 paired pulses elicited corticospinal action potentials by magnetic (motor cortex) and/or electrical (thoracic spine) stimulation allowing volleys to arrive at the spinal cord 1-2 milliseconds before motoneurons were activated retrogradely via bilateral electrical stimulation (brachial plexus, ulnar, femoral, and common peroneal nerves) for biceps brachii, first dorsal interosseous, quadriceps femoris, and tibialis anterior muscles as needed. RESULTS We found in our randomized study that participants receiving Hebbian stimulation improved their walking speed and corticospinal function to a greater extent than individuals receiving sham stimulation. In agreement, prospective study participants improved their grasping and walking, corticospinal function, and quality of life metrics, exhibiting greater improvements with more sessions that persisted 9-month post-therapy. INTERPRETATION Our findings suggest that multisite Hebbian stimulation, informed by the physiology of the corticospinal system, represents an effective strategy to promote functional recovery following SCI. Abstract
Human locomotion may result from monotonic shifts in the referent position, R, of the body in the environment. R is also the spatial threshold at which muscles can be quiescent but are activated depending on the deflection of the current body configuration Q from R. Shifts in R are presumably accomplished with the participation of proprioceptive and visual feedback and responsible for transferring stable body balance (equilibrium) from one place in the environment to another, resulting in rhythmic activity of multiple muscles by a central pattern generator (CPG). We tested predictions of this two-level control scheme. In particular, in response to a transient block of vision during locomotion, the system can temporarily slow shifts in R. As a result, the phase of rhythmical movements of all four limbs will be changed for some time, even though the rhythm and other characteristics of locomotion will be fully restored after perturbation, a phenomenon called long-lasting phase resetting. Another prediction of the control scheme is that the activity of multiple muscles of each leg can be minimized reciprocally at specific phases of the gait cycle both in the presence and absence of vision. Speed of locomotion is related to the rate of shifts in the referent body position in the environment. Results confirmed that human locomotion is likely guided by feedforward shifts in the referent body location, with subsequent changes in the activity of multiple muscles by the CPG. Neural structures responsible for shifts in the referent body configuration causing locomotion are suggested.

Abstract
We explored the phenomena of force drifts and unintentional finger force production (enslaving), and their dependence on visual feedback. Predictions have been drawn based on the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates for condition with feedback on instructed (master) finger force, enslaved finger force, and total force for one-hand and two-hand tasks. Subjects produced force under the different feedback conditions without their knowledge. No feedback condition was also used for the one-hand tasks. Overall, feedback of master finger force led to an increase in the enslaved force, feedback on the slave finger force led to a drop in the master force, feedback on the total force led to balanced drifts in the master force down and enslaved force up, and under the no-feedback condition, master and total force drifted down with large variability in the enslaved force drifts. The patterns were the same in both hands in the two-hand tasks when feedback was provided on the forces of one hand only (without subject's knowledge). The index of enslaving always drifted toward higher values. We interpret the findings as reflecting three main factors: drifts in the referent coordinates toward actual finger coordinates, spread of cortical excitation over representations of the fingers, and robust sharing of referent coordinates between the two hands in bimanual tasks. The large consistent drifts in enslaving toward higher values have to be considered in studies of multi-finger synergies.

Abstract
In the conventional view of sensorimotor control, the premotor cortex (PM) plans actions that are executed by the primary motor cortex (M1). This notion arises in part from many experiments that have imposed a preparatory "planning" period, during which PM becomes active without M1. But during many natural movements, PM and M1 are co-activated, making it difficult to distinguish their functional roles. We leverage coupled dynamical systems models (cDSMs) to uncover interactions between PM and M1 during movements performed with no preparatory period. We build cDSMs using neural and behavioral data recorded from two non-human primates as they performed a reach-grasp-manipulate task. PM and M1 interact dynamically throughout these movements. Whereas PM drives the M1 in some situations, in other situations, M1 drives PM activity, contrary to the conventional assumption. Our DSM framework provides additional predictions differentiating the roles of PM and M1 in controlling movement.

Abstract
We accept a definition of synergy introduced by Nikolai Bernstein and develop it for various actions, from those involving the whole body to those involving a single muscle. Furthermore, we use two major theoretical developments in the field of motor control—the idea of hierarchical control with spatial referent coordinates and the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis—to discuss recent studies of synergies within spaces of individual motor units (MUs) recorded within a single muscle. During the accurate finger force production tasks, MUs within hand extrinsic muscles form robust groups, with parallel scaling of the firing frequencies. The loading factors at individual MUs within each of the two main groups link them to the reciprocal and coactivation commands. Furthermore, groups are recruited in a task-specific way with gains that covary to stabilize muscle force. Such force-stabilizing synergies are seen in MUs recorded in the agonist and antagonist muscles but not in the spaces of MUs combined over the two muscles. These observations reflect inherent trade-offs between synergies at different levels of a control hierarchy. MU-based synergies do not show effects of hand dominance, whereas such effects are seen in multifinger synergies. Involuntary, reflex-based, force changes are stabilized by intramuscle synergies but not by multifinger synergies. These observations suggest that multifinger (multimuscle synergies) are based primarily on supraspinal circuitry, whereas intramuscle synergies reflect spinal circuitry. Studies of intra- and multimuscle synergies promise a powerful tool for exploring changes in spinal and supraspinal circuitry across patient populations.

Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that the ipsilateral corticospinal system, like the contralateral corticospinal system, controls the threshold muscle length at which wrist muscles and the stretch reflex begin to act during holding tasks. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied over the right primary motor cortex in 21 healthy subjects holding a smooth or coarse block between the hands. Regardless of the lifting force, motor evoked potentials in right wrist flexors were larger for the smooth block. This result was explained based on experimental evidence that motor actions are controlled by shifting spatial stretch reflex thresholds. Thus, the ipsilateral corticospinal system is involved in threshold position control by modulating facilitatory influences of hand skin afferents on motoneurons of wrist muscles during bimanual object manipulation.

Abstract
We explored the phenomenon of unintentional force drifts in the absence of visual feedback. Based on the idea of direct force control with internal models and on the idea of indirect force control with referent coordinates to the involved muscle groups, contrasting predictions were drawn for changes in the drift magnitude when acting against external spring loads. Fifteen young subjects performed typical accurate force production tasks by pressing with the Index finger at 20% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in isometric conditions and while acting against one of the three external springs with different stiffness. The visual feedback on the force was turned off after 5 s. At the end of each 20-s trial, the subjects relaxed and then tried to reproduce the final force level. The force drifts were significantly smaller in the spring conditions, particularly when acting against more compliant springs. The subjects were unaware of the force drifts and, during force matching, produced forces close to the initial force magnitude, which were not different across the conditions. There was a trend toward larger drifts during performance by the dominant hand. We view these observations as strong arguments in favor of the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates. In particular, force drifts were likely consequences of drifts of referent coordinates to both agonist and antagonist muscles. The lack of drift effects on both perception-to-report and perception-to-act fit the scheme of kinesthetic perception based on the interaction of efferent (referent coordinate) and afferent processes.

Abstract
Unperturbed human locomotion presumably results from feedforward shifts in stable body equilibrium in the environment, thus avoiding falling and subsequent catching considered in alternative theories of locomotion. Such shifts are achieved by relocation of the referent body configuration at which multiple muscle recruitment begins. Rather than being directly specified by a central pattern generator, multiple muscles are activated depending on the extent to which the body is deflected from the referent, threshold body configuration, as confirmed in previous studies. Based on the referent control theory of action and perception, solutions to classical problems in motor control are offered, including the previously unresolved problem of the integration of central and reflex influences on motoneurons and the problem of how posture and movement are related. The speed of locomotion depends on the rate of shifts in the referent body configuration. The transition from walking to running results from increasing the rate of referent shifts. It is emphasised that there is a certain hierarchy between reciprocal and co-activation of agonist and antagonist muscles during locomotion and other motor actions, which is also essential for the understanding of how locomotor speed is regulated. The analysis opens a new avenue in neurophysiological approaches to human locomotion with clinical implications.

Abstract
We present a review on the phenomenon of unintentional finger action seen when other fingers of the hand act intentionally. This phenomenon (enslaving) has been viewed as a consequence of both peripheral (e.g., connective tissue links and multifinger muscles) and neural (e.g., projections of corticospinal pathways) factors. Recent studies have shown relatively large and fast drifts in enslaving toward higher magnitudes, which are not perceived by subjects. These and other results emphasize the defining role of neural factors in enslaving. We analyze enslaving within the framework of the theory of motor control with spatial referent coordinates. This analysis suggests that unintentional finger force changes result from drifts of referent coordinates, possibly reflecting the spread of cortical excitation.

Abstract
A number of notions in the fields of motor control and kinesthetic perception have been used without clear definitions. In this review, we consider definitions for efference copy, percept, and sense of effort based on recent studies within the physical approach, which assumes that the neural control of movement is based on principles of parametric control and involves defining time-varying profiles of spatial referent coordinates for the effectors. The apparent redundancy in both motor and perceptual processes is reconsidered based on the principle of abundance. Abundance of efferent and afferent signals is viewed as the means of stabilizing both salient action characteristics and salient percepts formalized as stable manifolds in high-dimensional spaces of relevant elemental variables. This theoretical scheme has led recently to a number of novel predictions and findings. These include, in particular, lower accuracy in perception of variables produced by elements involved in a multielement task compared with the same elements in single-element tasks, dissociation between motor and perceptual effects of muscle coactivation, force illusions induced by muscle vibration, and errors in perception of unintentional drifts in performance. Taken together, these results suggest that participation of efferent signals in perception frequently involves distorted copies of actual neural commands, particularly those to antagonist muscles. Sense of effort is associated with such distorted efferent signals. Distortions in efference copy happen spontaneously and can also be caused by changes in sensory signals, e.g., those produced by muscle vibration.

Abstract
Background Motor performance is a complex process controlled in task-specific spatial frames of reference (FRs). Movements can be made within the framework of the body (egocentric FR) or external space (exocentric FR). People with stroke have impaired reaching, which may be related to deficits in movement production in different FRs. Objective To characterize rapid motor responses to changes in the number of degrees of freedom for movements made in different FRs and their relationship with sensorimotor and cognitive impairment in individuals with mild chronic stroke. Methods Healthy and poststroke individuals moved their hand along the contralateral forearm (egocentric task) and between targets in the peripersonal space (exocentric task) without vision while flexing the trunk. Trunk movement was blocked in randomized trials. Results For the egocentric task, controls produced the same endpoint trajectories in both conditions (free- and blocked-trunk) by preserving similar shoulder-elbow interjoint coordination (IJC). However, endpoint trajectories were dissimilar because of altered IJC in stroke. For the exocentric task, controls produced the same endpoint trajectories when the trunk was free or blocked by rapidly changing the IJC, whereas this was not the case in stroke. Deficits in exocentric movement after stroke were related to cognitive but not sensorimotor impairment. Conclusions Individuals with mild stroke have deficits rapidly responding to changing conditions for complex reaching tasks. This may be related to cognitive deficits and limitations in the regulation of tonic stretch reflex thresholds. Such deficits should be considered in rehabilitation programs encouraging the reintegration of the affected arm into activities of daily living.

Abstract
We explored changes in finger forces and in an index of unintentional finger force production (enslaving) under a variety of visual feedback conditions and positional finger perturbations. In particular, we tested a hypothesis that enslaving would show a consistent increase with time at characteristic times of about 1-2 s. Young healthy subjects performed accurate force production tasks under visual feedback on the total force of the instructed fingers (index and ring) or enslaved fingers (middle and little). Finger feedback was covertly alternated between master and enslaved fingers in a random fashion. The feedback could be presented over the first 5 s of the trial only or over the whole trial duration (21 s). After 5 s, the fingers were lifted by 1 cm, and after 15 s, the fingers were lowered to the initial position. The force of the instructed fingers drifted toward lower magnitudes in all conditions except the one with continuous feedback on that force. The force of enslaved fingers showed variable behavior across conditions. In all conditions, the index of enslaving showed a consistent increase with the time constant varying between 1 and 3 s. We interpret the results as pointing at the spread of excitation to enslaved fingers (possibly, in the cortical M1 areas). The relatively fast changes in enslaving under positional finger perturbations suggest that quick changes of the input into M1 from pre-M1 areas can accelerate the hypothesized spread of cortical excitation.

Abstract
There are contralateral and less studied ipsilateral (i), indirect cortical descending projections to motoneurons (MNs). We compared ipsilateral cortical descending influences on MNs of wrist flexors by applying transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the right primary motor cortex at actively maintained flexion and extension wrist positions in uni- and bimanual tasks in right-handed participants (n = 23). The iTMS response includes a short latency (~ 25 ms) motor evoked potential (iMEP), a silent period (iSP) and a long latency (~ 60 ms) facilitation called rebound (iRB). We also investigated whether the interaction between the two hands while holding an object in a bimanual task involves ipsilateral cortical descending influences. In the unimanual task, iTMS responses in the right wrist flexors were unaffected by changes in wrist position. In the bimanual task with an object, iMEPs in the right wrist flexors were larger when the ipsilateral wrist was in flexion compared to extension. Without the object, only iRB were larger when the ipsilateral wrist was extended. Thus, ipsilateral cortical descending influences on MNs were modulated only in bimanual tasks and depended on how the two hands interacted. It is concluded that the left and right cortices cooperate in bimanual tasks involving holding an object with both hands, with possible involvement of oligo- and poly-synaptic, as well as transcallosal projections to MNs. The possible involvement of spinal and transcortical stretch and cutaneous reflexes in bimanual tasks when holding an object is discussed in the context of the well-established notion that indirect, referent control underlies motor actions.

Abstract
When a person tries to press with a finger, other fingers of the hand produce force unintentionally. We explored this phenomenon of enslaving during unintentional force drifts in the course of continuous force production by pairs of fingers of a hand. Healthy subjects performed accurate force production tasks by finger pairs Index-Middle, Middle-Ring, and Ring-Little with continuous visual feedback on the combined force of the instructed (master) fingers or of the noninstructed (enslaved) fingers. The feedback scale was adjusted to ensure that the subjects did not know the difference between these two, randomly presented, conditions. Across all finger pairs, enslaved force showed a drift upward under feedback on the master finger force, and master force showed a drift downward under feedback on the enslaved finger force. The subjects were unaware of the force drifts, which could reach over 50% of the initial force magnitude over 15 s. Across all conditions, the index of enslaving increased by ∼50% over the trial duration. The initial moment of force magnitude in pronation-supination was not a consistent predictor of the force drift magnitude. These results falsify the hypothesis that the counter-directional force drifts reflected drifts in the moment of force. They suggest that during continuous force production, enslaving increases with time, possibly due to the spread of excitation over cortical finger representations or other mechanisms, such as increased synchronization of firing of α-motoneurons innervating different compartments of extrinsic flexors. These changes in enslaving, interpreted at the level of control with referent coordinates for the fingers, can contribute to a variety of phenomena, including unintentional force drifts.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We report a consistent slow increase in finger enslaving (force production by noninstructed fingers) when visual feedback was presented on the force produced by either two instructed fingers or two noninstructed fingers of the hand. In contrast, force drifts could be in opposite directions depending on the visual feedback. We interpret enslaving and its drifts at the level of control with referent coordinates for the involved muscles, possibly reflecting spread of cortical excitation.

Abstract
We describe a physical approach to biological functions, with the emphasis on the motor and sensory functions. The approach assumes the existence of biology-specific laws of nature uniting salient physical variables and parameters. In contrast to movements in inanimate nature, actions are produced by changes in parameters of the corresponding laws of nature. For movements, parameters are associated with spatial referent coordinates (RCs) for the effectors. Stability of motor actions is ensured by the abundant mapping of RCs across hierarchical control levels. The sensory function is viewed as based on an interaction of efferent and afferent signals leading to an iso-perceptual manifold where percepts of salient sensory variables are stable. This approach offers novel interpretations for a variety of known neurophysiological and behavioral phenomena and makes a number of novel testable predictions. In particular, we discuss novel interpretations for the well-known phenomena of agonist-antagonist co-activation and vibration-induced illusions of both position and force. We also interpret results of several new experiments with unintentional force changes and with analysis of accuracy of perception of variables produced by elements of multi-element systems. Recently, this approach has been expanded to interpret motor disorders including spasticity and consequences of subcortical disorders (such as Parkinson's disease). We suggest that the approach can be developed for cognitive functions.

Abstract
Conventional explanations of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and eye and head movements are revisited by considering two alternative frameworks addressing the question of how the brain controls motor actions. Traditionally, biomechanical and/or computational frameworks reflect the views of several prominent scholars of the past, including Helmholtz and von Holst, who assumed that the brain directly specifies the desired motor outcome and uses efference copy to influence perception. However, empirical studies resulting in the theory of referent control of action and perception (an extension of the equilibrium-point hypothesis) revealed that direct specification of motor outcome is inconsistent with nonlinear properties of motoneurons and with the physical principle that the brain can control motor actions only indirectly, by changing or maintaining the values of neurophysiological parameters that influence, but can remain independent of, biomechanical variables. Some parameters are used to shift the origin (referent) points of spatial frames of reference (FRs) or system of coordinates in which motor actions emerge without being predetermined. Parameters are adjusted until the emergent motor actions meet the task demands. Several physiological parameters and spatial FRs have been identified, supporting the notion of indirect, referent control of movements. Instead of integration of velocity-dependent signals, position-dimensional referent signals underlying head motion can likely be transmitted to motoneurons of extraocular muscles. This would produce compensatory eye movement preventing shifts in gaze during head rotation, even after bilateral destruction of the labyrinths. The referent control framework symbolizes a shift in the paradigm for the understanding of VOR and eye and head movement production.

Abstract
Most studies addressing the role of vestibulospinal reflexes in balance maintenance have mainly focused on responses in the lower limbs, while limited attention has been paid to the output in trunk and back muscles. To address this issue, we tested whether electromyographic (EMG) responses to galvanic vestibular stimulations (GVS) were modulated similarly in back and leg muscles, in situations where the leg muscle responses to GVS are known to be attenuated. Body sway and surface EMG signals were recorded in the paraspinal and limb muscles of humans (n = 19) under three complementary conditions. During treadmill locomotion, EMG responses in the lower limbs were observed only during stance, whereas responses in trunk muscles were observed during all phases of the locomotor cycle. During upright standing, a slight head contact abolished the responses in the lower limbs, while the responses remained present in back muscles. Similarly, during parabolic flight-induced microgravity, EMG responses in lower limb muscles were suppressed but remained in axial muscles despite the abolished gravitational otolithic drive. Our results suggest a differentiated control of axial and appendicular muscles when a perturbation is detected by vestibular inputs. The persistence and low modulation of axial muscle responses suggests that a hard-wired reflex is functionally efficient to maintain posture. By contrast, the ankle responses to GVS occur only in balance tasks when proprioceptive feedback is congruent. This study using GVS in microgravity is the first to present an approach delineating feedforward vestibular control in unconstrained environment.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study addresses the extent of conservation of trunk muscle control in humans. Results show that galvanic vestibular stimulation-evoked vestibular responses in trunk muscles remain strong in conditions where leg muscle responses are downmodulated (walking, standing, microgravity). This suggests a phylogenetically conserved blueprint of sensorimotor organization, with strongly hardwired vestibulospinal inputs to axial motoneurons and a higher degree of flexibility in the later emerging limb control system.

Abstract
The concept of primitives has been used in motor control both as a theoretical construct and as a means of describing the results of experimental studies involving multiple moving elements. This concept is close to Bernstein’s notion of engrams and level of synergies. Performance primitives have been explored in spaces of peripheral variables but interpreted in terms of neural control primitives. Performance primitives reflect a variety of mechanisms ranging from body mechanics to spinal mechanisms and to supraspinal circuitry. This review suggests that primitives originate at the task level as preferred time functions of spatial referent coordinates or at mappings from higher level referent coordinates to lower level, frequently abundant, referent coordinate sets. Different patterns of performance primitives can emerge depending, in particular, on the external force field.

Abstract
The empirically based referent control theory of motor actions provides a new framework for understanding locomotor maturation. Mature movement patterns of referent control are characterized by periods of minimization of activity across multiple muscles (global electromyographic [EMG] minima) resulting from transient matching between actual and referent body configurations. We identified whether locomotor maturation in young children was associated with (a) development of referent control and (b) children's frequency of participation in everyday activities evaluated by parents. Kinematics and EMG activity were recorded from typically developing children (n = 15, 3-5 years) and young adults (n = 10, 18-25 years) while walking, vertical or forward jumping. Presence and location of global EMG minima in movement cycles, slopes of ankle vertical/sagittal displacements, and shoulder displacement ratios were evaluated. Children had fewer global EMG minima compared to adults during specific phases of vertical and forward jumps. Ankle displacement profiles for walking and jumping forward were related to each other in adults, whereas those for walking and vertical jumping were related in children. Higher frequency of participation was significantly correlated with more mature jumping patterns in children. A decrease in the number of global EMG minima and changes in ankle movement patterns could be indicators of locomotor immaturity in typically developing children.

Abstract
Many neurons of the primary motor cortex (M1) are maximally sensitive to "preferred" hand movement directions and generate progressively less activity with movements away from these directions. M1 activity also correlates with other biomechanical variables. These findings are predominantly interpreted in a framework in which the brain preprograms and directly specifies the desired motor outcome. This approach is inconsistent with the empirically derived equilibrium-point hypothesis, in which the brain can control motor actions only indirectly, by changing neurophysiological parameters that may influence, but remain independent of, biomechanical variables. The controversy is resolved on the basis of experimental findings and theoretical analysis of how sensory and central influences are integrated in the presence of the fundamental nonlinearity of neurons: electrical thresholds. In the presence of sensory inputs, electrical thresholds are converted into spatial thresholds that predetermine the position of the body segments at which muscles begin to be activated. Such thresholds may be considered as referent points of respective spatial frames of reference (FRs) in which neurons, including motoneurons, are centrally predetermined to work. By shifting the referent points of respective FRs, the brain elicits intentional actions. Pure involuntary reactions to perturbations are accomplished in motionless FRs. Neurons are primarily sensitive to shifts in referent directions, i.e., shifts in spatial FRs, whereas emergent neural activity may or may not correlate with different biomechanical variables depending on the motor task and external conditions. Indirect, referent control of posture and movement symbolizes a departure from conventional views based on direct preprogramming of the motor outcome.

Abstract
Body orientation with respect to the direction of gravity changes when we lean forward from upright standing. We tested the hypothesis that during upright standing, the nervous system specifies the referent body orientation that defines spatial thresholds for activation of multiple muscles across the body. To intentionally lean the body forward, the system is postulated to transfer balance and stability to the leaned position by monotonically tilting the referent orientation, thus increasing the activation thresholds of ankle extensors and decreasing their activity. Consequently, the unbalanced gravitational torque would start to lean the body forward. With restretching, ankle extensors would be reactivated and generate increasing electromyographic (EMG) activity until the enhanced gravitational torque would be balanced at a new posture. As predicted, vestibular influences on motoneurons of ankle extensors evaluated by galvanic vestibular stimulation were smaller in the leaned compared with the upright position, despite higher tonic EMG activity. Defacilitation of vestibular influences was also observed during forward leaning when the EMG levels in the upright and leaned position were equalized by compensating the gravitational torque with a load. The vestibular system is involved in the active control of body orientation without directly specifying the motor outcome. Corticospinal influences originating from the primary motor cortex evaluated by transcranial magnetic stimulation remained similar at the two body postures. Thus, in contrast to the vestibular system, the corticospinal system maintains a similar descending facilitation of motoneurons of leg muscles at different body orientations. The study advances the understanding of how body orientation is controlled. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The brain changes the referent body orientation with respect to gravity to lean the body forward. Physiologically, this is achieved by shifts in spatial thresholds for activation of ankle muscles, which involves the vestibular system. Results advance the understanding of how the brain controls body orientation in the gravitational field. The study also extends previous evidence of empirical control of motor function, i.e., without the reliance on model-based computations and direct specification of motor outcome.

Abstract
The phenomenon of agonist-antagonist muscle coactivation is discussed with respect to its consequences for movement mechanics (such as increasing joint apparent stiffness, facilitating faster movements, and effects on action stability), implication for movement optimization, and involvement of different neurophysiological structures. Effects of coactivation on movement stability are ambiguous and depend on the effector representing a kinematic chain with a fixed origin or free origin. Furthermore, coactivation is discussed within the framework of the equilibrium-point hypothesis and the idea of hierarchical control with spatial referent coordinates. Relations of muscle coactivation to changes in one of the basic commands, the c-command, are discussed and illustrated. A hypothesis is suggested that agonist-antagonist coactivation reflects a deliberate neural control strategy to preserve effector-level control and avoid making it degenerate and facing the necessity to control at the level of signals to individual muscles. This strategy, in particular, allows stabilizing motor actions by covaried adjustments in spaces of control variables. This hypothesis is able to account for higher levels of coactivation in young healthy persons performing challenging tasks and across various populations with movement impairments.

Abstract
We explored the relations between indices of mechanical stability of vertical posture and synergy indices under unexpected perturbations. The main hypotheses predicted higher posture-stabilizing synergy indices and higher mechanical indices of center of pressure stability during perturbations perceived by subjects as less challenging. Healthy subjects stood on a force platform and held in fully extended arms a bar attached to two loads acting downward and upward. One of the loads was unexpectedly released by the experimenter causing a postural perturbations. In different series, subjects either knew or did not know which of the two loads would be released. Forward perturbations were perceived as more challenging and accompanied by co-activation patterns among the main agonist-antagonist pairs. Backward perturbation led to reciprocal muscle activation patterns and was accompanied by indices of mechanical stability and of posture-stabilizing synergy which indicated higher stability. Changes in synergy indices were observed as early as 50-100 ms following the perturbation reflecting involuntary mechanisms. In contrast, predictability of perturbation direction had weak or no effect on mechanical and synergy indices of stability. These observations are interpreted within a hierarchical scheme of synergic control of motor tasks and a hypothesis on the control of movements with shifts of referent coordinates. The findings show direct correspondence between stability indices based on mechanics and on the analysis of multi-muscle synergies. They suggest that involuntary posture-stabilizing mechanisms show synergic organization. They also show that predictability of perturbation direction has strong effects on anticipatory postural adjustment but not corrective adjustments. We offer an interpretation of co-activation patterns that questions their contribution to postural stability.

Abstract
This study addresses the question of how posture and movement are oriented with respect to the direction of gravity. It is suggested that neural control levels coordinate spatial thresholds at which multiple muscles begin to be activated to specify a referent body orientation (RO) at which muscle activity is minimized. Under the influence of gravity, the body is deflected from the RO to an actual orientation (AO) until the emerging muscle activity and forces begin to balance gravitational forces and maintain body stability. We assumed that (1) during quiet standing on differently tilted surfaces, the same RO and thus AO can be maintained by adjusting activation thresholds of ankle muscles according to the surface tilt angle; (2) intentional forward body leaning results from monotonic ramp-and-hold shifts in the RO; (3) rhythmic oscillation of the RO about the ankle joints during standing results in body swaying. At certain sway phases, the AO and RO may transiently overlap, resulting in minima in the activity of multiple muscles across the body. EMG kinematic patterns of the 3 tasks were recorded and explained based on the RO concept that implies that these patterns emerge due to referent control without being pre-programmed. We also confirmed the predicted occurrence of minima in the activity of multiple muscles at specific body configurations during swaying. Results re-affirm previous rejections of model-based computational theories of motor control. The role of different descending systems in the referent control of posture and movement in the gravitational field is considered.

Abstract
This work presents a wearable device and the algorithms for quantitative modelling of joint spasticity and its application in a pilot group of subjects with different levels of spinal cord injury. The device comprises light-weight instrumented handles to measure the interaction force between the subject and the physical therapist performing the tests, EMG sensors and inertial measurement units to measure muscle activity and joint kinematics. Experimental tests included the passive movement of different body segments, where the spasticity was expected, at different velocities. Tonic stretch reflex thresholds and their velocity modulation factor are computed, as a quantitative index of spasticity, by using the kinematics data at the onset of spasm detected through thresholding the EMG data. This technique was applied to two spinal cord injury subjects. The proposed method allowed the analysis of spasticity at muscle and joint levels. The obtained results are in line with the expert diagnosis and qualitative spasticity characterisation on each individual.

Abstract
The Kohnstamm phenomenon refers to the observation that if one pushes the arm hard outwards against a fixed surface for about 30 s, and then moves away from the surface and relaxes, an involuntary movement of the arm occurs, accompanied by a feeling of lightness. Central, peripheral and hybrid theories of the Kohnstamm phenomenon have been advanced. Afferent signals may be irrelevant if purely central theories hold. Alternatively, according to peripheral accounts, altered afferent signalling actually drives the involuntary movement. Hybrid theories suggest afferent signals control a centrally-programmed aftercontraction via negative position feedback control or positive force feedback control. The Kohnstamm phenomenon has provided an important scientific method for comparing voluntary with involuntary movement, both with respect to subjective experience, and for investigating whether involuntary movements can be brought under voluntary control. A full review of the literature reveals that a hybrid model best explains the Kohnstamm phenomenon. On this model, a central adaptation interacts with afferent signals at multiple levels of the motor hierarchy. The model assumes that a Kohnstamm generator sends output via the same pathways as voluntary movement, yet the resulting movement feels involuntary due to a lack of an efference copy to cancel against sensory inflow. This organisation suggests the Kohnstamm phenomenon could represent an amplification of neuromotor processes normally involved in automatic postural maintenance. Future work should determine which afferent signals contribute to the Kohnstamm phenomenon, the location of the Kohnstamm generator, and the principle of feedback control operating during the aftercontraction.

KEY POINTS Sudden unloading of preloaded wrist muscles elicits motion to a new wrist position. Such motion is prevented if subjects unload muscles using the contralateral arm (self-unloading). Corticospinal influences originated from the primary motor cortex maintain tonic influences on motoneurons of wrist muscles before sudden unloading but modify these influences prior to the onset and until the end of self-unloading. Results are interpreted based on the previous finding that intentional actions are caused by central, particularly corticospinal, shifts in the spatial thresholds at which wrist motoneurons are activated, thus predetermining the attractor point at which the neuromuscular periphery achieves mechanical balance with environment forces. By maintaining or shifting the thresholds, descending systems let body segments go to the equilibrium position in the respective unloading tasks without the pre-programming of kinematics or muscle activation patterns. The study advances the understanding of how motor actions in general, and anticipation in particular, are controlled. ABSTRACT The role of corticospinal (CS) pathways in anticipatory motor actions was evaluated using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex projecting to motoneurons (MNs) of wrist muscles. Preloaded wrist flexors were suddenly unloaded by the experimenter or by the subject using the other hand (self-unloading). After sudden unloading, the wrist joint involuntarily flexed to a new position. In contrast, during self-unloading the wrist remained almost motionless, implying that an anticipatory postural adjustment occurred. In the self-unloading task, anticipation was manifested by a decrease in descending facilitation of pre-activated flexor MNs starting ∼72 ms before changes in the background EMG activity. Descending facilitation of extensor MNs began to increase ∼61 ms later. Conversely, these influences remained unchanged before sudden unloading, implying the absence of anticipation. We also tested TMS responses during EMG silent periods produced by brief muscle shortening, transiently resulting in similar EMG levels before the onset and after the end of self-unloading. We found reduced descending facilitation of flexor MNs after self-unloading. To explain why the wrist excursion was minimized in self-unloading due to these changes in descending influences, we relied on previous demonstrations that descending systems pre-set the threshold positions of body segments at which muscles begin to be activated, thus predetermining the equilibrium point to which the system is attracted. Based on this notion, a more consistent explanation of the kinematic, EMG and descending patterns in the two types of unloading is proposed compared to the alternative notion of direct pre-programming of kinematic and/or EMG patterns.

Abstract
Motor actions may result from central changes in the referent body configuration, defined as the body posture at which muscles begin to be activated or deactivated. The actual body configuration deviates from the referent configuration, particularly because of body inertia and environmental forces. Within these constraints, the system tends to minimize the difference between these configurations. For pointing movement, this strategy can be expressed as the tendency to minimize the difference between the referent trajectory (RT) and actual trajectory (QT) of the effector (hand). This process may underlie motor equivalent behavior that maintains the pointing trajectory regardless of the number of body segments involved. We tested the hypothesis that the minimization process is used to produce pointing in standing subjects. With eyes closed, 10 subjects reached from a standing position to a remembered target located beyond arm length. In randomly chosen trials, hip flexion was unexpectedly prevented, forcing subjects to take a step during pointing to prevent falling. The task was repeated when subjects were instructed to intentionally take a step during pointing. In most cases, reaching accuracy and trajectory curvature were preserved due to adaptive condition-specific changes in interjoint coordination. Results suggest that referent control and the minimization process associated with it may underlie motor equivalence in pointing. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Motor actions may result from minimization of the deflection of the actual body configuration from the centrally specified referent body configuration, in the limits of neuromuscular and environmental constraints. The minimization process may maintain reaching trajectory and accuracy regardless of the number of body segments involved (motor equivalence), as confirmed in this study of reaching from standing in young healthy individuals. Results suggest that the referent control process may underlie motor equivalence in reaching.

Abstract
Control of reflexes is usually associated with central modulation of their sensitivity (gain) or phase-dependent inhibition and facilitation of their influences on motoneurons (reflex gating). Accumulated empirical findings show that the gain modulation and reflex gating are secondary, emergent properties of central control of spatial thresholds at which reflexes become functional. In this way, the system pre-determines, in a feedforward and task-specific way, where, in a spatial domain or a frame of reference, muscles are allowed to work without directly prescribing EMG activity and forces. This control strategy is illustrated by considering reflex adaptation to repeated muscle stretches in healthy subjects, a process associated with implicit learning and generalization. It has also been shown that spasticity, rigidity, weakness and other neurological motor deficits may have a common source - limitations in the range of spatial threshold control elicited by neural lesions.

Abstract
Although action and perception are different behaviors, they are likely to be interrelated, as implied by the notions of perception-action coupling and active sensing. Traditionally, it has been assumed that the nervous system directly preprograms motor commands required for actions and uses a copy of them called efference copy (EC) to also influence our senses. This review offers a critical analysis of the EC concept by identifying its limitations. An alternative to the EC concept is based on the experimentally confirmed notion that sensory signals from receptors are perceived relative to referent signals specified by the brain. These referents also underlie the control of motor actions by predetermining where, in the spatial domain, muscles can work without preprogramming how they should work in terms of motor commands or EC. This approach helps solve several problems of action and explain several sensory experiences, including position sense and the sense that the world remains stationary despite changes in its retinal image during eye or body motion (visual space constancy). The phantom limb phenomenon and other kinesthetic illusions are also explained within this framework.

Abstract
Behavior of biological systems is based on basic physical laws, common across inanimate and living systems, and currently unknown physical laws that are specific for living systems. Living systems are able to unite basic laws of physics into chains and clusters leading to new stable and pervasive relations among variables (new physical laws) involving new parameters and to modify these parameters in a purposeful way. Examples of such laws are presented starting from the tonic stretch reflex. Further, the idea of control with referent coordinates is formulated and merged with the idea of hierarchical control and the principle of abundance. The notion of controlled stability of behaviors is linked to the idea of structured variability, which is a common feature across living systems and actions. The explanatory and predictive power of this approach is illustrated with respect to the control of both intentional and unintentional movements, the phenomena of equifinality and its violations, preparation to quick actions, development of motor skills, changes with aging and neurological disorders, and perception.

Abstract
Loud acoustic stimuli can unintentionally elicit volitional acts when a person is in a state of readiness to execute them (the StartReact effect). It has been assumed that the same subcortical pathways and brain regions underlie all instances of the StartReact effect. They are proposed to involve the startle reflex pathways, and the eliciting mechanism is distinct from other ways in which sound can affect the motor system. We present an integrative review which shows that there is no evidence to support these assumptions. We argue that motor command generation for learned, volitional orofacial, laryngeal and distal limb movements is cortical and the StartReact effect for such movements involves transcortical pathways. In contrast, command generation for saccades, locomotor corrections and postural adjustments is subcortical and subcortical pathways are implicated in the StartReact effect for these cases. We conclude that the StartReact effect is not a special phenomenon mediated by startle reflex pathways, but rather is a particular manifestation of the excitatory effects of intense stimulation on the central nervous system.

Abstract
Adaptation of neural responses to repeated muscle stretching likely represents implicit learning to minimize muscle resistance to perturbations. To test this hypothesis, the forearm was placed on a horizontal manipulandum. Elbow flexors or extensors compensated an external load and were stretched by 20° or 70° rotations. Participants were instructed not to intervene by intentionally modifying the muscle resistance elicited by stretching. In addition to phasic stretch reflexes (SRs), muscle stretching was associated with inhibitory periods (IPs) in the ongoing muscle activity starting at minimal latencies of ∼35 ms. The SR amplitude decreased dramatically across 5-12 trials and was not restored after a resting period of 3-5 min, despite the increase in stretch amplitude from 20° to 70°, but IPs remained present. When SRs were suppressed, stretching of originally nonstretched, antagonist muscles initiated after the rest period showed immediate SR suppression while IPs remained present in the first and subsequent trials. Adaptation to muscle stretching thus includes features characteristic of implicit learning such as memory consolidation and generalization. Adaptation may be achieved by central shifts in the threshold positions at which muscles begin to be activated. Shifts are thought to be prepared in advance and triggered with stretch onset. Threshold position resetting provides a comprehensive explanation of the results in the broader context of the control of posture, movement, and motor learning in the healthy and damaged nervous system.

Abstract
The equilibrium-point hypothesis and its more recent version, the referent configuration hypothesis, represent the physical approach to the neural control of action. This hypothesis can be naturally combined with the idea of hierarchical control of movements and of synergic organization of the abundant systems involved in all actions. Any action starts with defining trajectories of a few referent coordinates for a handful of salient task-specific variables. Further, referent coordinates at hierarchically lower levels emerge down to thresholds of the tonic stretch reflex for the participating muscles. Stability of performance with respect to salient variables is reflected in the structure of inter-trial variance and phenomena of motor equivalence. Three lines of recent research within this framework are reviewed. First, synergic adjustments of the referent coordinate and apparent stiffness have been demonstrated during finger force production supporting the main idea of control with referent coordinates. Second, the notion of unintentional voluntary movements has been introduced reflecting unintentional drifts in referent coordinates. Two types of unintentional movements have been observed with different characteristic times. Third, this framework has been applied to studies of impaired movements in neurological patients. Overall, the physical approach searching for laws of nature underlying biological movement has been highly stimulating and productive.

Abstract
We recently showed that subcortical circuits contribute to control the gain of motor cortical inputs to spinal motoneurons during precision grip of a small object. Here, we examine whether the involvement of the motor cortex could be revealed by grasping with different hand postures. Using noninvasive cortical, cervicomedullary, and peripheral nerve stimulation we examined in humans motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) and the activity in intracortical circuits (suppression of voluntary electromyography) and spinal motoneurons (F-waves) in intrinsic hand muscles when grasping a 6 mm cylinder with the index finger and thumb while the hand was held in the neutral position or during full pronation and supination. We demonstrate that the size of cortically evoked MEPs in the first dorsal interosseous, but not in the abductor pollicis brevis and abductor digit minimi muscles, was reduced to a similar extent during grasping with the hand pronated or supinated compared with the neutral position. Notably, the suppression of MEPs was present from the MEP onset, suggesting that indirect corticospinal pathways were less likely to be involved than direct connections. There was less intracortical inhibition targeting the first dorsal interosseous during hand pronation and supination compared with neutral and this negatively correlated with changes in MEP size. In contrast, cervicomedullary MEPs and F-waves remained unchanged across conditions, as did MEPs evoked during unopposed weak flexion of the index finger. Our findings reveal a distinct influence of the posture of the hand on the activity of cortical pathways controlling different hand muscles during grasping.

Abstract
The motor cortex and the corticospinal system contribute to the control of a precision grip between the thumb and index finger. The involvement of subcortical pathways during human precision grip remains unclear. Using noninvasive cortical and cervicomedullary stimulation, we examined motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and the activity in intracortical and subcortical pathways targeting an intrinsic hand muscle when grasping a small (6 mm) cylinder between the thumb and index finger and during index finger abduction in uninjured humans and in patients with subcortical damage due to incomplete cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). We demonstrate that cortical and cervicomedullary MEP size was reduced during precision grip compared with index finger abduction in uninjured humans, but was unchanged in SCI patients. Regardless of whether cortical and cervicomedullary stimulation was used, suppression of the MEP was only evident 1-3 ms after its onset. Long-term (∼5 years) use of the GABAb receptor agonist baclofen by SCI patients reduced MEP size during precision grip to similar levels as uninjured humans. Index finger sensory function correlated with MEP size during precision grip in SCI patients. Intracortical inhibition decreased during precision grip and spinal motoneuron excitability remained unchanged in all groups. Our results demonstrate that the control of precision grip in humans involves premotoneuronal subcortical mechanisms, likely disynaptic or polysynaptic spinal pathways that are lacking after SCI and restored by long-term use of baclofen. We propose that spinal GABAb-ergic interneuronal circuits, which are sensitive to baclofen, are part of the subcortical premotoneuronal network shaping corticospinal output during human precision grip.

Abstract
According to recent findings, intentional motor actions are controlled by resetting the referent position, R, at which neuromuscular elements, including reflexes, begin to act. It is suggested that somatosensory afferents inform the brain about the deviation (P) of body segments from the centrally set referent position. To perceive the actual position (Q) of body segments and form the position sense (PS), the central and afferent signals are combined: Q=R+P. In previous studies, the R has been shown to remain invariant during involuntary changes in the wrist position elicited by sudden unloading of muscles, suggesting that only the afferent component is responsible for the PS during this reflex. In contrast, the central PS component, R, is predominantly responsible for PS during intentional motion in isotonic conditions. We tested the hypothesis that the R and P are interchangeable PS components such that involuntary changes in wrist position elicited by the unloading reflex can easily be reproduced by making intentional changes in wrist position in isotonic conditions, in the absence of vision. The PS rule also suggests that PS is independent of sense of effort, which was tested by asking subjects to reproduce elbow joint angles under different constant loads. We also tested the hypothesis that tendon vibration may elicit motion that may not be perceived by subjects (no-motion illusion). These hypotheses were confirmed in three experiments. It is concluded that the R and P are additive components of PS and that, contrary to the conventional view, PS is independent of the sense of effort or efference copy. The PS rule also explains kinesthetic illusions and the phantom limb phenomenon. This study advances the understanding of action-perception coupling in kinesthesia.

Abstract
The motor system is capable of adapting to changed conditions such as amputations or lesions by reorganizing cortical representations of peripheral musculature. To investigate the underlying mechanisms we induced targeted reorganization of motor output effects by establishing an artificial recurrent connection between a forelimb muscle and an unrelated site in the primary motor cortex (M1) of macaques. A head-fixed computer transformed forelimb electromyographic activity into proportional subthreshold intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) during hours of unrestrained volitional behavior. This conditioning paradigm stimulated the cortical site for a particular muscle in proportion to activation of another muscle and induced robust site- and input-specific reorganization of M1 output effects. Reorganization was observed within 25 min and could be maintained with intermittent conditioning for successive days. Control stimulation that was independent of muscle activity, termed "pseudoconditioning," failed to produce reorganization. Preconditioning output effects were gradually restored during volitional behaviors following the end of conditioning. The ease of changing the relationship between cortical sites and associated muscle responses suggests that under normal conditions these relations are maintained through physiological feedback loops. These findings demonstrate that motor cortex outputs may be reorganized in a targeted and sustainable manner through artificial afferent feedback triggered from controllable and readily recorded muscle activity. Such cortical reorganization has implications for therapeutic treatment of neurological injuries.

Abstract
The descending projections from motor cortex share many features with top-down or backward connections in visual cortex; for example, corticospinal projections originate in infragranular layers, are highly divergent and (along with descending cortico-cortical projections) target cells expressing NMDA receptors. This is somewhat paradoxical because backward modulatory characteristics would not be expected of driving motor command signals. We resolve this apparent paradox using a functional characterisation of the motor system based on Helmholtz's ideas about perception; namely, that perception is inference on the causes of visual sensations. We explain behaviour in terms of inference on the causes of proprioceptive sensations. This explanation appeals to active inference, in which higher cortical levels send descending proprioceptive predictions, rather than motor commands. This process mirrors perceptual inference in sensory cortex, where descending connections convey predictions, while ascending connections convey prediction errors. The anatomical substrate of this recurrent message passing is a hierarchical system consisting of functionally asymmetric driving (ascending) and modulatory (descending) connections: an arrangement that we show is almost exactly recapitulated in the motor system, in terms of its laminar, topographic and physiological characteristics. This perspective casts classical motor reflexes as minimising prediction errors and may provide a principled explanation for why motor cortex is agranular.

Abstract
We used adaptation to high and low gains in a virtual reality setup of the hand to test competing hypotheses about the excitability changes that accompany motor learning. Excitability was assayed through changes in amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in relevant hand muscles elicited with single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). One hypothesis is that MEPs will either increase or decrease, directly reflecting the effect of low or high gain on motor output. The alternative hypothesis is that MEP changes are not sign dependent but rather serve as a marker of visuomotor learning, independent of performance or visual-to-motor mismatch (i.e., error). Subjects were required to make flexion movements of a virtual forefinger to visual targets. A gain of 1 meant that the excursions of their real finger and virtual finger matched. A gain of 0.25 ("low gain") indicated a 75% reduction in visual versus real finger displacement, a gain of 1.75 ("high gain") the opposite. MEP increases (>40%) were noted in the tonically activated task-relevant agonist muscle for both high- and low-gain perturbations after adaptation reached asymptote with kinematics matched to veridical levels. Conversely, only small changes in excitability occurred in a control task of pseudorandom gains that required adjustments to large errors but in which learning could not accumulate. We conclude that changes in corticospinal excitability are related to learning rather than performance or error.
