Double cross magnetic wall decoupling for quadrature transceiver RF array coils using common-mode differential-mode resonators

In contrast to linearly polarized RF coil arrays, quadrature transceiver coil arrays are capable of improving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), spatial resolution, and parallel imaging performance. Owing to a reduced excitation power, a low specific absorption rate can also be obtained using quadrature RF coils. However, due to the complex nature of their structure and their electromagnetic properties, it is challenging to achieve sufficient electromagnetic decoupling while designing multichannel quadrature RF coil arrays, particularly in ultra-high fields. In this work, we proposed a double-cross magnetic wall decoupling for quadrature transceiver RF arrays and implemented the decoupling method on common-mode differential mode quadrature (CMDM) quadrature transceiver arrays at an ultrahigh field of 7 T. The proposed magnetic decoupling wall, comprised of two intrinsically decoupled loops, is used to reduce the mutual coupling between all the multi-mode currents present in the quadrature CMDM array. The decoupling network has no physical connection with the CMDMs' resonators, which provides less design constraint over size-adjustable RF arrays. To validate the feasibility of the proposed cross-magnetic decoupling wall, systematic studies on the decoupling performance based on the impedance of two intrinsic loops are numerically performed. A pair of quadrature transceiver CMDMs is constructed along with the proposed decoupling network, and their scattering matrix is characterized using a network analyzer. The measured results indicate that all the current modes from coupling are simultaneously suppressed using the proposed cross-magnetic wall. Moreover, field distribution and local specific absorption rate (SAR) are numerically obtained for a well-decoupled 8-channel quadrature knee-coil array.

Hairpin RF resonators for MR imaging transceiver arrays with high inter-channel isolation and B1 efficiency at ultrahigh field 7 T

Electromagnetic decoupling among a close-fitting or high-density transceiver RF array elements is required to maintain the integrity of the magnetic flux density from individual channel for enhanced performance in detection sensitivity and parallel imaging. High-impedance RF coils have demonstrated to be a prominent design method to circumvent these coupling issues. Yet, inherent characteristics of these coils have ramification on the B₁ field efficiency and SNR. In this work, we propose a hairpin high impedance RF resonator design for highly decoupled multichannel transceiver arrays at ultrahigh magnetic fields. Due to the high impedance property of the hairpin resonators, the proposed transceiver array can provide high decoupling performance without using any dedicated decoupling circuit among the resonant elements. Because of elimination of lumped inductors in the resonator circuit, higher B₁ field efficiency in imaging subjects can be expected. In order to validate the feasibility of the proposed hairpin RF coils, systematical studies on decoupling performance, field distribution, and SNR are performed, and the results are compared with those obtained from existing high-impedance RF coil, e.g., "self-decoupled RF coil". To further investigate its performance, an 8-channel head coil array using the proposed hairpin resonators loaded with a cylindrical phantom is designed, demonstrating a 19 % increase of the B₁⁺ field intensity compared to the self-decoupled coils at 7 T. Furthermore, the characteristics of the hairpin RF coils are evaluated using a more realistic human head voxel model numerically. The proposed hairpin RF coil provides excellent decoupling performance and superior RF magnetic field efficiency compared to the "self-decoupled" high impedance coils. Bench test of a pair of fabricated hairpin coils prove to be in good accordance with numerical results.

Automatic brain extraction and hemisphere segmentation in rat brain MR images after stroke using deformable models

PURPOSE

Experimental ischemic stroke models play an essential role in understanding the mechanisms of cerebral ischemia and evaluating the development of pathological extent. An important precursor to the investigation of ischemic strokes associated with rodents is the brain extraction and hemisphere segmentation in rat brain diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and T2-weighted MRI (T2WI) images. Accurate and reliable image segmentation tools for extracting the rat brain and hemispheres in the MR images are critical in subsequent processes, such as lesion identification and injury analysis. This study is an attempt to investigate rat brain extraction and hemisphere segmentation algorithms that are practicable in both DWI and T2WI images.

METHODS

To automatically perform brain extraction, the proposed framework is based on an efficient geometric deformable model. By introducing an additional image force in response to the rat brain characteristics into the skull stripping model, we establish a unique rat brain extraction scheme in DWI and T2WI images. For the subsequent hemisphere segmentation, we develop an efficient brain feature detection algorithm to approximately separate the rat brain. A refinement process is enforced by constructing a gradient vector flow in the proximity of the midsurface, where a parametric active contour is attracted to achieve hemisphere segmentation.

RESULTS

Extensive experiments with 55 DWI and T2WI subjects were executed in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods. Experimental results indicated that our rat brain extraction and hemisphere segmentation schemes outperformed the competitive methods and exhibited high performance both qualitatively and quantitatively. For rat brain extraction, the average Dice scores were 97.13% and 97.42% in DWI and T2WI image volumes, respectively. Rat hemisphere segmentation results based on the Hausdorff distance metric revealed average values of 0.17 and 0.15 mm for DWI and T2WI subjects, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

We believe that the established frameworks are advantageous to facilitate preclinical stroke investigation and relevant neuroscience research that requires accurate brain extraction and hemisphere segmentation using rat DWI and T2WI images.

A Specialized Multi-Transmit Head Coil for High Resolution fMRI of the Human Visual Cortex at 7T

PURPOSE

To design, construct and validate radiofrequency (RF) transmit and receive phased array coils for high-resolution visual cortex imaging at 7 Tesla.

METHODS

A 4 channel transmit and 16 channel receive array was constructed on a conformal polycarbonate former. Transmit field efficiency and homogeneity were simulated and validated, along with the Specific Absorption Rate, using [Formula: see text] mapping techniques and electromagnetic simulations. Receiver signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), temporal SNR (tSNR) across EPI time series, g-factors for accelerated imaging and noise correlations were evaluated and compared with a commercial 32 channel whole head coil. The performance of the coil was further evaluated with human subjects through functional MRI (fMRI) studies at standard and submillimeter resolutions of upto 0.8mm isotropic.

RESULTS

The transmit and receive sections were characterized using bench tests and showed good interelement decoupling, preamplifier decoupling and sample loading. SNR for the 16 channel coil was ∼ 1.5 times that of the commercial coil in the human occipital lobe, and showed better g-factor values for accelerated imaging. fMRI tests conducted showed better response to Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) activation, at resolutions of 1.2mm and 0.8mm isotropic.

CONCLUSION

The 4 channel phased array transmit coil provides homogeneous excitation across the visual cortex, which, in combination with the dual row 16 channel receive array, makes for a valuable research tool for high resolution anatomical and functional imaging of the visual cortex at 7T.

The Travelling-Wave Primate System: A New Solution for Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Macaque Monkeys at 7 Tesla Ultra-High Field

Introduction

Neuroimaging of macaques at ultra-high field (UHF) is usually conducted by combining a volume coil for transmit (Tx) and a phased array coil for receive (Rx) tightly enclosing the monkey’s head. Good results have been achieved using vertical or horizontal magnets with implanted or near-surface coils. An alternative and less costly approach, the travelling-wave (TW) excitation concept, may offer more flexible experimental setups on human whole-body UHF magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, which are now more widely available. Goal of the study was developing and validating the TW concept for in vivo primate MRI.

Methods

The TW Primate System (TWPS) uses the radio frequency shield of the gradient system of a human whole-body 7 T MRI system as a waveguide to propagate a circularly polarized B1 field represented by the TE11 mode. This mode is excited by a specifically designed 2-port patch antenna. For receive, a customized neuroimaging monkey head receive-only coil was designed. Field simulation was used for development and evaluation. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was compared with data acquired with a conventional monkey volume head coil consisting of a homogeneous transmit coil and a 12-element receive coil.

Results

The TWPS offered good image homogeneity in the volume-of-interest Turbo spin echo images exhibited a high contrast, allowing a clear depiction of the cerebral anatomy. As a prerequisite for functional MRI, whole brain ultrafast echo planar images were successfully acquired.

Conclusion

The TWPS presents a promising new approach to fMRI of macaques for research groups with access to a horizontal UHF MRI system.

ICE decoupling technique for RF coil array designs

PURPOSE

Parallel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) requires an array of RF coil elements with different sensitivity distributions and with minimal electromagnetic coupling. The goal of this project was to develop a new method based on induced current compensation or elimination (ICE) for improved coil element decoupling and to investigate its performance in phantom MR images.

METHODS

An electromagnetic decoupling method based on induced current compensation or elimination for nonoverlapping RF coil arrays was developed with the design criteria of high efficiency, easy implementation, and no physical connection to RF array elements. An eigenvalue/eigenvector approach was employed to analyze the decoupling mechanism and condition. A two-channel microstrip array and an eight-channel coil array were built to test the performance of the method. Following workbench tests, MR imaging experiments were performed on a 7T MR scanner.

RESULTS

The bench tests showed that both arrays achieved sufficient decoupling with a S21 less than -25 dB among the coil elements at 298 MHz. The MR phantom images demonstrated well-defined sensitivity distributions from each coil element and the unique decoupling capability of the proposed ICE decoupling technique. B1 distributions of the individual elements were also measured and calculated.

CONCLUSIONS

The theoretical analysis and experiments demonstrated the feasibility of the decoupling method for high field RF coil array designs without overlapping or direct physical connections between coil elements, which provide more flexibility for coil array design and optimization. The method offers a new approach to address the RF array decoupling issue, which is a major challenge in implementing parallel imaging.

A 20-channel receive-only mouse array coil for a 3 T clinical MRI system

A 20-channel phased-array coil for MRI of mice has been designed, constructed, and validated with bench measurements and high-resolution accelerated imaging. The technical challenges of designing a small, high density array have been overcome using individual small-diameter coil elements arranged on a cylinder in a hexagonal overlapping design with adjacent low impedance preamplifiers to further decouple the array elements. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and noise amplification in accelerated imaging were simulated and quantitatively evaluated in phantoms and in vivo mouse images. Comparison between the 20-channel mouse array and a length-matched quadrature driven small animal birdcage coil showed an SNR increase at the periphery and in the center of the phantom of 3- and 1.3-fold, respectively. Comparison with a shorter but SNR-optimized birdcage coil (aspect ratio 1:1 and only half mouse coverage) showed an SNR gain of twofold at the edge of the phantom and similar SNR in the center. G-factor measurements indicate that the coil is well suited to acquire highly accelerated images.
