Efficient coding in human auditory perception

Hearing as adaptive cascaded envelope interpolation

The human auditory system is designed to capture and encode sounds from our surroundings and conspecifics. However, the precise mechanisms by which it adaptively extracts the most important spectro-temporal information from sounds are still not fully understood. Previous auditory models have explained sound encoding at the cochlear level using static filter banks, but this vision is incompatible with the nonlinear and adaptive properties of the auditory system. Here we propose an approach that considers the cochlear processes as envelope interpolations inspired by cochlear physiology. It unifies linear and nonlinear adaptive behaviors into a single comprehensive framework that provides a data-driven understanding of auditory coding. It allows simulating a broad range of psychophysical phenomena from virtual pitches and combination tones to consonance and dissonance of harmonic sounds. It further predicts the properties of the cochlear filters such as frequency selectivity. Here we propose a possible link between the parameters of the model and the density of hair cells on the basilar membrane. Cascaded Envelope Interpolation may lead to improvements in sound processing for hearing aids by providing a non-linear, data-driven, way to preprocessing of acoustic signals consistent with peripheral processes.

Two stages of bandwidth scaling drives efficient neural coding of natural sounds

Theories of efficient coding propose that the auditory system is optimized for the statistical structure of natural sounds, yet the transformations underlying optimal acoustic representations are not well understood. Using a database of natural sounds including human speech and a physiologically-inspired auditory model, we explore the consequences of peripheral (cochlear) and mid-level (auditory midbrain) filter tuning transformations on the representation of natural sound spectra and modulation statistics. Whereas Fourier-based sound decompositions have constant time-frequency resolution at all frequencies, cochlear and auditory midbrain filters bandwidths increase proportional to the filter center frequency. This form of bandwidth scaling produces a systematic decrease in spectral resolution and increase in temporal resolution with increasing frequency. Here we demonstrate that cochlear bandwidth scaling produces a frequency-dependent gain that counteracts the tendency of natural sound power to decrease with frequency, resulting in a whitened output representation. Similarly, bandwidth scaling in mid-level auditory filters further enhances the representation of natural sounds by producing a whitened modulation power spectrum (MPS) with higher modulation entropy than both the cochlear outputs and the conventional Fourier MPS. These findings suggest that the tuning characteristics of the peripheral and mid-level auditory system together produce a whitened output representation in three dimensions (frequency, temporal and spectral modulation) that reduces redundancies and allows for a more efficient use of neural resources. This hierarchical multi-stage tuning strategy is thus likely optimized to extract available information and may underlies perceptual sensitivity to natural sounds.

Long-term priors constrain category learning in the context of short-term statistical regularities

Cognitive systems face a constant tension of maintaining existing representations that have been fine-tuned to long-term input regularities and adapting representations to meet the needs of short-term input that may deviate from long-term norms. Systems must balance the stability of long-term representations with plasticity to accommodate novel contexts. We investigated the interaction between perceptual biases or priors acquired across the long-term and sensitivity to statistical regularities introduced in the short-term. Participants were first passively exposed to short-term acoustic regularities and then learned categories in a supervised training task that either conflicted or aligned with long-term perceptual priors. We found that the long-term priors had robust and pervasive impact on categorization behavior. In contrast, behavior was not influenced by the nature of the short-term passive exposure. These results demonstrate that perceptual priors place strong constraints on the course of learning and that short-term passive exposure to acoustic regularities has limited impact on directing subsequent category learning.

Efficient Neural Coding in Auditory and Speech Perception

Speech has long been recognized as 'special'. Here, we suggest that one of the reasons for speech being special is that our auditory system has evolved to encode it in an efficient, optimal way. The theory of efficient neural coding argues that our perceptual systems have evolved to encode environmental stimuli in the most efficient way. Mathematically, this can be achieved if the optimally efficient codes match the statistics of the signals they represent. Experimental evidence suggests that the auditory code is optimal in this mathematical sense: statistical properties of speech closely match response properties of the cochlea, the auditory nerve, and the auditory cortex. Even more interestingly, these results may be linked to phenomena in auditory and speech perception.

The Efficient Coding of Speech: Cross-Linguistic Differences

Neural coding in the auditory system has been shown to obey the principle of efficient neural coding. The statistical properties of speech appear to be particularly well matched to the auditory neural code. However, only English has so far been analyzed from an efficient coding perspective. It thus remains unknown whether such an approach is able to capture differences between the sound patterns of different languages. Here, we use independent component analysis to derive information theoretically optimal, non-redundant codes (filter populations) for seven typologically distinct languages (Dutch, English, Japanese, Marathi, Polish, Spanish and Turkish) and relate the statistical properties of these filter populations to documented differences in the speech rhythms (Analysis 1) and consonant inventories (Analysis 2) of these languages. We show that consonant class membership plays a particularly important role in shaping the statistical structure of speech in different languages, suggesting that acoustic transience, a property that discriminates consonant classes from one another, is highly relevant for efficient coding.

Efficient population coding of naturalistic whisker motion in the ventro-posterior medial thalamus based on precise spike timing

The rodent whisker-associated thalamic nucleus (VPM) contains a somatotopic map where whisker representation is divided into distinct neuronal sub-populations, called “barreloids”. Each barreloid projects to its associated cortical barrel column and so forms a gateway for incoming sensory stimuli to the barrel cortex. We aimed to determine how the population of neurons within one barreloid encodes naturalistic whisker motion. In rats, we recorded the extracellular activity of up to nine single neurons within a single barreloid, by implanting silicon probes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the barreloids. We found that play-back of texture-induced whisker motion evoked sparse responses, timed with millisecond precision. At the population level, there was synchronous activity: however, different subsets of neurons were synchronously active at different times. Mutual information between population responses and whisker motion increased near linearly with population size. When normalized to factor out firing rate differences, we found that texture was encoded with greater informational-efficiency than white noise. These results indicate that, within each VPM barreloid, there is a rich and efficient population code for naturalistic whisker motion based on precisely timed, population spike patterns.

Differential cue weighting in perception and production of consonant voicing

This study examines English speakers' relative weighting of two voicing cues in production and perception. Participants repeated words differing in initial consonant voicing ([b] or [p]) and labeled synthesized tokens ranging between [ba] and [pa] orthogonally according to voice onset time (VOT) and onset f0. Discriminant function analysis and logistic regression were used to calculate individuals' relative weighting of each cue. Production results showed a significant negative correlation of VOT and onset f0, while perception results showed a trend toward a positive correlation. No significant correlations were found across perception and production, suggesting a complex relationship between the two domains.

Temporal-envelope constancy of speech in rooms and the perceptual weighting of frequency bands

Three experiments measured constancy in speech perception, using natural-speech messages or noise-band vocoder versions of them. The eight vocoder-bands had equally log-spaced center-frequencies and the shapes of corresponding "auditory" filters. Consequently, the bands had the temporal envelopes that arise in these auditory filters when the speech is played. The "sir" or "stir" test-words were distinguished by degrees of amplitude modulation, and played in the context; "next you'll get _ to click on." Listeners identified test-words appropriately, even in the vocoder conditions where the speech had a "noise-like" quality. Constancy was assessed by comparing the identification of test-words with low or high levels of room reflections across conditions where the context had either a low or a high level of reflections. Constancy was obtained with both the natural and the vocoded speech, indicating that the effect arises through temporal-envelope processing. Two further experiments assessed perceptual weighting of the different bands, both in the test word and in the context. The resulting weighting functions both increase monotonically with frequency, following the spectral characteristics of the test-word's [s]. It is suggested that these two weighting functions are similar because they both come about through the perceptual grouping of the test-word's bands.
