Effectiveness of Two-Talker Maskers That Differ in Talker Congruity and Perceptual Similarity to the Target Speech

Previous work has shown that masked-sentence recognition is particularly poor when the masker is composed of two competing talkers, a finding that is attributed to informational masking. Informational masking tends to be largest when the target and masker talkers are perceptually similar. Reductions in masking have been observed for a wide range of target and masker differences, including language: Performance is better when the target and masker talkers speak in different languages, compared with the same language. The present study evaluated normal-hearing adults’ sentence recognition in a two-talker masker as a function of the perceptual similarity between the target and each of the two masker streams. The target was English, and the maskers were composed of English, time-reversed English, or Dutch. These three masker types are known to vary in the informational masking they exert. The two talkers within the two-talker maskers were either congruent (e.g., both English) or incongruent (e.g., one English, one Dutch). As predicted, mean performance was worse for the congruent English masker than the congruent time-reversed English or congruent Dutch maskers. Incongruent two-talker maskers, with just one English masker stream, were only modestly less effective than the congruent English masker. This result indicates that two-talker masker effectiveness was determined predominantly by the one masker stream that was most perceptually similar to the target. Speech recognition in a single-talker masker differed only marginally between the English, Dutch, and time-reversed English masker types, suggesting that perceptual similarity may be more critical in a two-talker than a one-talker masker.

Effect of signal-temporal uncertainty in children and adults: tone detection in noise or a random-frequency masker

A cue indicating when in time to listen can improve adults' tone detection thresholds, particularly for conditions that produce substantial informational masking. The purpose of this study was to determine if 5- to 13-yr-old children likewise benefit from a light cue indicating when in time to listen for a masked pure-tone signal. Each listener was tested in one of two continuous maskers: Broadband noise (low informational masking) or a random-frequency, two-tone masker (high informational masking). Using a single-interval method of constant stimuli, detection thresholds were measured for two temporal conditions: (1) Temporally-defined, with the listening interval defined by a light cue, and (2) temporally-uncertain, with no light cue. Thresholds estimated from psychometric functions fitted to the data indicated that children and adults benefited to the same degree from the visual cue. Across listeners, the average benefit of a defined listening interval was 1.8 dB in the broadband noise and 8.6 dB in the random-frequency, two-tone masker. Thus, the benefit of knowing when in time to listen was more robust for conditions believed to be dominated by informational masking. An unexpected finding of this study was that children's thresholds were comparable to adults' in the random-frequency, two-tone masker.

Human pitch detectors are tuned on a fine scale, but are perceptually accessed on a coarse scale

Single neurons in auditory cortex display highly selective spectrotemporal properties: their receptive fields modulate over small fractions of an octave and integrate across temporal windows of 100-200 ms. We investigated how these characteristics impact auditory behavior. Human observers were asked to detect a specific sound frequency masked by broadband noise; we adopted an experimental design which required the engagement of frequency-selective mechanisms to perform above chance. We then applied psychophysical reverse correlation to derive spectrotemporal perceptual filters for the assigned task. We were able to expose signatures of neuronal-like spectrotemporal tuning on a scale of 1/10 octave and 50-100 ms, but detailed modeling of our results showed that observers were not able to rely on the explicit output of these channels. Instead, human observers pooled from a large bank of highly selective channels via a weighting envelope poorly tuned for frequency (on a scale of 1.5 octave) with sluggish temporal dynamics, followed by a highly nonlinear max-like operation. We conclude that human detection of specific frequencies embedded within complex sounds suffers from a high degree of intrinsic spectrotemporal uncertainty, resulting in low efficiency values (<1 %) for this perceptual ability. Signatures of the underlying neural circuitry can be exposed, but there does not appear to be a direct line for accessing individual neural channels on a fine scale.

The effects of noise-bandwidth, noise-fringe duration, and temporal signal location on the binaural masking-level difference

The effects of forward and backward noise fringes on binaural signal detectability were investigated. Masked thresholds for a 12-ms, 250-Hz, sinusoidal signal masked by Gaussian noise, centered at 250 Hz, with bandwidths from 3 to 201 Hz, were obtained in N(0)S(0) and N(0)S(π) configurations. The signal was (a) temporally centered in a 12-ms noise burst (no fringe), (b) presented at the start of a 600-ms noise burst (backward fringe), or (c) temporally centered in a 600-ms noise burst (forward-plus-backward fringe). For noise bandwidths between 3 and 75 Hz, detection in N(0)S(0) improved with the addition of a backward fringe, improving further with an additional forward fringe; there was little improvement in N(0)S(π). The binaural masking-level difference (BMLD) increased from 0 to 8 dB with a forward-plus-backward fringe as noise bandwidths increased to 100 Hz, increasing slightly to 10 dB at 201 Hz. This two-stage increase was less pronounced with a backward fringe. With no fringe, the BMLD was about 10-14 dB at all bandwidths. Performance appears to result from the interaction of across-time and across-frequency listening strategies and the possible effects of gain reduction and suppression, which combine in complex ways. Current binaural models are, as yet, unable to account fully for these effects.
