Auditory spectral integration in the perception of static vowels

PURPOSE

To evaluate potential contributions of broadband spectral integration in the perception of static vowels. Specifically, can the auditory system infer formant frequency information from changes in the intensity weighting across harmonics when the formant itself is missing? Does this type of integration produce the same results in the lower (first formant [F1]) and higher (second formant [F2]) regions? Does the spacing between the spectral components affect a listener's ability to integrate the acoustic cues?

METHOD

Twenty young listeners with normal hearing identified synthesized vowel-like stimuli created for adjustments in the F1 region (/Λ/-/α/, /i/-/ε/) and in the F2 region (/Λ/-/æ/). There were 2 types of stimuli: (a) 2-formant tokens and (b) tokens in which 1 formant was removed and 2 pairs of sine waves were inserted below and above the missing formant; the intensities of these harmonics were modified to cause variations in their spectral center of gravity (COG). The COG effects were tested over a wide range of frequencies.

RESULTS

Obtained patterns were consistent with calculated changes to the spectral COG, in both the F1 and F2 regions. The spacing of the sine waves did not affect listeners' responses.

CONCLUSION

The auditory system may perform broadband integration as a type of auditory wideband spectral analysis.

Factors affecting the use of noise-band vocoders as acoustic models for pitch perception in cochlear implants

Although in a number of experiments noise-band vocoders have been shown to provide acoustic models for speech perception in cochlear implants (CI), the present study assesses in four experiments whether and under what limitations noise-band vocoders can be used as an acoustic model for pitch perception in CI. The first two experiments examine the effect of spectral smearing on simulated electrode discrimination and fundamental frequency (FO) discrimination. The third experiment assesses the effect of spectral mismatch in an FO-discrimination task with two different vocoders. The fourth experiment investigates the effect of amplitude compression on modulation rate discrimination. For each experiment, the results obtained from normal-hearing subjects presented with vocoded stimuli are compared to results obtained directly from CI recipients. The results show that place pitch sensitivity drops with increased spectral smearing and that place pitch cues for multi-channel stimuli can adequately be mimicked when the discriminability of adjacent channels is adjusted by varying the spectral slopes to match that of CI subjects. The results also indicate that temporal pitch sensitivity is limited for noise-band carriers with low center frequencies and that the absence of a compression function in the vocoder might alter the saliency of the temporal pitch cues.

Relative contributions of temporal and place pitch cues to fundamental frequency discrimination in cochlear implantees

The effect of the filter bank on fundamental frequency (F0) discrimination was examined in four Nucleus CI24 cochlear implant subjects for synthetic stylized vowel-like stimuli. The four tested filter banks differed in cutoff frequencies, amount of overlap between filters, and shape of the filters. To assess the effects of temporal pitch cues on F0 discrimination, temporal fluctuations were removed above 10 Hz in one condition and above 200 Hz in another. Results indicate that F0 discrimination based upon place pitch cues is possible, but just-noticeable differences exceed 1 octave or more depending on the filter bank used. Increasing the frequency resolution in the F0 range improves the F0 discrimination based upon place pitch cues. The results of F0 discrimination based upon place pitch agree with a model that compares the centroids of the electrical excitation pattern. The addition of temporal fluctuations up to 200 Hz significantly improves F0 discrimination. Just-noticeable differences using both place and temporal pitch cues range from 6% to 60%. Filter banks that do not resolve the higher harmonics provided the best temporal pitch cues, because temporal pitch cues are clearest when the fluctuation on all channels is at F0 and preferably in phase.

Discrimination of changes in the spectral shape of noise bands

Discrimination experiments were performed for a change in the spectral shape of noise bands. The subject's task was to discriminate noise bands with a positive spectral slope from those with a negative spectral slope. Thresholds were measured at several bandwidths and center frequencies, as well as for several noise samples. Experiments were performed while roving the overall intensity. At a fixed center frequency of 1 kHz, sensitivity was best for bandwidths of 3-6 semitones (ST). At larger bandwidths, thresholds increased only slowly. At a fixed bandwidth of 1 ST, threshold hardly changed as a function of the center frequency. At a fixed bandwidth of 58 Hz, threshold was lowest near 500-1000 Hz. Model calculations show that the EWAIF model [Feth, Percept. Psychophys. 15, 375-378 (1974)] can account for the present results if the signal's bandwidth does not exceed 1 ST. The IWAIF model [Anantharaman et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 94, 723-729 (1993)] can account for the present results only if the signal's bandwidth is smaller than 1 ST but larger than about 25 Hz. Results obtained with broadband signals could be described only qualitatively with the multichannel model [Durlach et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 80, 63-72 (1986)]. Then, the model needs the assumption that either the output of the different frequency bands cannot be optimally combined, or that only two bands are used in the discrimination process. The present results are compared with those obtained with two-tone complexes measured under identical conditions [Versfeld and Houtsma, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 98, 807-816 (1995)].
