Effects of interaural decoherence on sensitivity to interaural level differences across frequency

Impact of processing-latency induced interaural delay and level discrepancy on sensitivity to interaural level differences in cochlear implant users

PURPOSE

This study investigated whether an interaural delay, e.g. caused by the processing latency of a hearing device, can affect sensitivity to interaural level differences (ILDs) in normal hearing subjects or cochlear implant (CI) users with contralateral normal hearing (SSD-CI).

METHODS

Sensitivity to ILD was measured in 10 SSD-CI subjects and in 24 normal hearing subjects. The stimulus was a noise burst presented via headphones and via a direct cable connection (CI). ILD sensitivity was measured for different interaural delays in the range induced by hearing devices. ILD sensitivity was correlated with results obtained in a sound localization task using seven loudspeakers in the frontal horizontal plane.

RESULTS

In the normal hearing subjects the sensitivity to interaural level differences deteriorated significantly with increasing interaural delays. In the CI group, no significant effect of interaural delays on ILD sensitivity was found. The NH subjects were significantly more sensitive to ILDs. The mean localization error in the CI group was 10.8° higher than in the normal hearing group. No correlation between sound localization ability and ILD sensitivity was found.

CONCLUSION

Interaural delays influence the perception of ILDs. For normal hearing subjects a significant decrement in sensitivity to ILD was measured. The effect could not be confirmed in the tested SSD-CI group, probably due to a small subject group with large variations. The temporal matching of the two sides may be beneficial for ILD processing and thus sound localization for CI patients. However, further studies are needed for verification.

Interaural frequency mismatch jointly modulates neural brainstem binaural interaction and behavioral interaural time difference sensitivity in humans

The binaural interaction component (BIC) of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) is the difference obtained after subtracting the sum of right and left ear ABRs from binaurally evoked ABRs. The BIC has attracted interest as a biomarker of binaural processing abilities. Best binaural processing is presumed to require spectrally-matched inputs at the two ears, but peripheral pathology and/or impacts of hearing devices can lead to mismatched inputs. Such mismatching can degrade behavioral sensitivity to interaural time difference (ITD) cues, but might be detected using the BIC. Here, we examine the effect of interaural frequency mismatch (IFM) on BIC and behavioral ITD sensitivity in audiometrically normal adult human subjects (both sexes). Binaural and monaural ABRs were recorded and BICs computed from subjects in response to narrowband tones. Left ear stimuli were fixed at 4000 Hz while right ear stimuli varied over a ∼2-octave range (re: 4000 Hz). Separately, subjects performed psychophysical lateralization tasks using the same stimuli to determine ITD discrimination thresholds jointly as a function of IFM and sound level. Results demonstrated significant effects of IFM on BIC amplitudes, with lower amplitudes in mismatched conditions than frequency-matched. Behavioral ITD discrimination thresholds were elevated at mismatched frequencies and lower sound levels, but also more sharply modulated by IFM at lower sound levels. Combinations of ITD, IFM and overall sound level that resulted in fused and lateralized percepts were bound by the empirically-measured BIC, and also by model predictions simulated using an established computational model of the brainstem circuit thought to generate the BIC.

Age-Related Changes in Interaural-Level-Difference-Based Across-Frequency Binaural Interference

Low-frequency interaural time differences and high-frequency interaural level differences (ILDs) are used to localize sounds in the horizontal plane. Older listeners appear to be worse at horizontal-plane sound localization to compared younger listeners, but little is understood about age-related changes to across-frequency binaural processing. This study investigated if the frequency dependence of across-frequency ILD processing is altered for older compared to younger listeners, which was done by using an across-frequency binaural interference task (when the interaural difference sensitivity for a target sound is decreased by a spectrally remote interfering sound with zero interaural differences). It was hypothesized that as listeners experience advancing age and age-related high-frequency hearing loss (i.e., presbycusis), they will demonstrate worse binaural performance and experience more across-channel binaural interference (because of age-related temporal processing deficits), and will increasingly be affected by interferers at lower frequencies (because of age-related hearing loss) when compared to younger listeners. There were 11 older (>65 yrs) and 20 younger (<30 yrs) listeners with normal to near-normal audiometric thresholds up to 2 kHz. They were tested using a left-right ILD lateralization discrimination task. Single-tone ILD discrimination thresholds and across-frequency binaural interference were measured at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz. ILD thresholds and interference were about twice as large for older compared to younger listeners. Interferers ≤1 kHz produced 2-3 times as much across-frequency binaural interference for older compared to younger listeners. Hearing thresholds were significant predictors of single-tone ILD thresholds; in addition, both target and interferer hearing thresholds were significant predictors of binaural interference. The results suggest a reweighting of binaural information that occurs with advancing age and age-related high-frequency hearing loss. This evidence of plasticity may help explain some of the age-related changes in spatial-hearing abilities.

Spectral weighting functions for lateralization and localization of complex sound

Perceptual weighting of sound localization cues across spectral components was measured over headphones [experiment (expt.) 1] and in the free field (expt. 2) and quantified in the form of spectral weighting functions (SWFs). Stimuli consisted of five complex sounds (conditions), each containing seven frequency components. Participants judged the spatial position of the stimuli with spatial cues varying across frequency components. In separate experiments, free-field stimuli were presented anechoically (expt. 2), in the presence of simulated reverberation (expt. 3), or with stimuli varying in level either corrected for equal loudness (expt. 4.1) or sloped by ±6 dB per component (expt. 4.2). Overall results revealed greatest weight in the vicinity of 800 Hz, for both localization and interaural time difference (ITD)-based lateralization, although specific features of the SWFs did vary across stimulus conditions. The shape of the SWF follows the pattern of ITD sensitivity across frequency and is consistent with previous descriptions of an ITD "dominance region" peaking around 600-800 Hz. The close similarity of free field and ITD-based SWFs is further consistent with the hypothesized dominant role of low-frequency ITD in localization of broadband sounds. Other conditions revealed relatively modest effects of reverberation and component level.

Sound Source Localization by Cochlear Implant Recipients with Normal Hearing in the Contralateral Ear: Effects of Spectral Content and Duration of Listening Experience

INTRODUCTION

Cochlear implant (CI) recipients with normal hearing (NH) in the contralateral ear experience a significant improvement in sound source localization when listening with the CI in combination with their NH-ear (CI + NH) as compared to with the NH-ear alone. The improvement in localization is primarily due to sensitivity to interaural level differences (ILDs). Sensitivity to interaural timing differences (ITDs) may be limited by auditory aging, frequency-to-place mismatches, the signal coding strategy, and duration of CI use. The present report assessed the sensitivity of ILD and ITD cues in CI + NH listeners who were recipients of long electrode arrays that provide minimal frequency-to-place mismatches and were mapped with a coding strategy that presents fine structure cues on apical channels.

METHODS

Sensitivity to ILDs and ITDs for localization was assessed using broadband noise (BBN), as well as high-pass (HP) and low-pass (LP) filtered noise for adult CI + NH listeners. Stimuli were 200-ms noise bursts presented from 11 speakers spaced evenly over an 180° arc. Performance was quantified in root-mean-squared error and response patterns were analyzed to evaluate the consistency, accuracy, and side bias of the responses. Fifteen listeners completed the task at the 2-year post-activation visit; seven listeners repeated the task at a later annual visit.

RESULTS

Performance at the 2-year visit was best with the BBN and HP stimuli and poorer with the LP stimulus. Responses to the BBN and HP stimuli were significantly correlated, consistent with the idea that CI + NH listeners primarily use ILD cues for localization. For the LP stimulus, some listeners responded consistently and accurately and with limited side bias, which may indicate sensitivity to ITD cues. Two of the 7 listeners who repeated the task at a later annual visit experienced a significant improvement in performance with the LP stimulus, which may indicate that sensitivity to ITD cues may improve with long-term CI use.

CONCLUSIONS

CI recipients with a NH-ear primarily use ILD cues for sound source localization, though some may use ITD cues as well. Sensitivity to ITD cues may improve with long-term CI listening experience.

The effect of target and interferer frequency on across-frequency binaural interference of interaural-level-difference sensitivity

Across-frequency binaural interference occurs when the sensitivity to changes in interaural differences in a target sound is decreased by a spectrally remote diotic interfering sound. For interaural time differences (ITDs), low-frequency (e.g., 0.5 kHz) interferers cause more interference on high-frequency (e.g., 4 kHz) targets than vice versa. For interaural level differences (ILDs), however, it is unclear if a frequency dependence exists. Therefore, ILD discrimination thresholds and across-frequency binaural interference were measured for target and interferer frequencies between 0.5 and 8 kHz (for tones) or 12 kHz (for narrowband noises). For tones, 8-kHz targets experienced the least interference and 8-kHz interferers produced the most interference, suggesting that higher-frequency ILDs are a more heavily weighted localization cue than lower-frequency ILDs. For narrowband noises, the frequency-dependent interference patterns increased in complexity in comparison to tones. Low-frequency ITD dominance (from randomly varying onset ITDs) and grouping cues (e.g., envelope modulations) might explain some of the complexity in the interference patterns for the noises. These data contribute to a better understanding of across-frequency ILD processing, which remains poorly understood.

Considerations for Fitting Cochlear Implants Bimodally and to the Single-Sided Deaf

When listening with a cochlear implant through one ear and acoustically through the other, binaural benefits and spatial hearing abilities are generally poorer than in other bilaterally stimulated configurations. With the working hypothesis that binaural neurons require interaurally matched inputs, we review causes for mismatch, their perceptual consequences, and experimental methods for mismatch measurements. The focus is on the three primary interaural dimensions of latency, frequency, and level. Often, the mismatch is not constant, but rather highly stimulus-dependent. We report on mismatch compensation strategies, taking into consideration the specific needs of the respective patient groups. Practical challenges typically faced by audiologists in the proposed fitting procedure are discussed. While improvement in certain areas (e.g., speaker localization) is definitely achievable, a more comprehensive mismatch compensation is a very ambitious endeavor. Even in the hypothetical ideal fitting case, performance is not expected to exceed that of a good bilateral cochlear implant user.
