Assessing Interlimb Jump Asymmetry in Young Soccer Players: The My Jump 2 App

Reliability and validity of "My Jump 2" application for countermovement jump free arm and interlimb jump symmetry in different sports of professional athletes

Background

Vertical jumping is an important evaluation tool to measure muscle strength and power as well as lower limb symmetry. It is of practical importance and value to develop and utilize a portable and low-cost mobile application (APP) to evaluate jumping. The "My Jump 2" app is an iPhone camera-based application for measuring jumping movements, which is applied to the countermovement jump (CMJ) vertical jumps of the lower limbs of athletes in different sports. The validity of this application and previous versions applied to different forms of vertical jump tests has been preliminarily demonstrated in different population, which has an obvious progress in research. Therefore, the reliability and validity of the jump height, time of flight parameters and symmetry of the CMJ vertical jump of athletes in different sports are needed to be verified by more experiments.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to verify whether "My Jump 2" can effectively and reliably assess jump height, flight practice and lower limb symmetry in CMJAM (countermovement jump free arm) tests in fencing, swimming and diving athletes.

Methods

Seventy-nine fencers, swimmers and divers with training experience participated in this study. They completed a total of three CMJAM vertical jump and lower limb symmetry tests in 1 day, while being assessed by using the "My Jump 2" application and a force platform. The intra-group correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to verify reliability, while the Cronbach's alpha and coefficient of variation (CV%) was used to analyze the stability of the CMJAM vertical jump test over three jumps. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to verify the strength of the relationship between methods (i.e., concurrent validity), and the Bland-Altman plot was used to represent consistency, meanwhile, the t-test was used to determine the systematic bias between methods.

Results

Compared with the force platform, the cumulative height values of the total number of jumps (r = 0.999; p = 0.000), the cumulative time to vacate (r = 0.999; p = 0.000) for the CMJAM test obtained by the "My Jump 2" application, the height (ICC = 0.999-1, p = 0.000), the time to vacate flight (ICC = 0.999-1, p = 0.000), contact time symmetry (ICC = 0.976-0.994, p = 0.000), and flight time symmetry (ICC = 0.921-0.982, p = 0.000), respectively. Showed high correlation between the results of "my jump 2" app and the force platform.

Conclusion

The "My Jump 2" application is a valid tool to assess CMJAM vertical jump and lower limb symmetry in fencing, swimming and diving athletes with training experience.

Measuring Vertical Jump Height With Artificial Intelligence Through a Cell Phone: A Validity and Reliability Report

ABSTRACT

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2024-This study estimated the reliability and validity of an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven model in the My Jump 2 (My Jump Lab ) for estimating vertical jump height compared with the Force Platform (FP). The cross-sectional study involved 88 athletes (33 female and 55 male athletes), performing a total of 264 countermovement jumps with hands on hips. "Jump heights were simultaneously measured using the FP and the My Jump 2 app." The FP estimated jump heights using the impulse-momentum method, whereas My Jump 2 used the flight-time method, with the latter using an AI feature for automated detection of jump take-off and landing. Results indicated high reliability for the AI model (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC 1,3 ] = 0.980, coefficient of variation [CV] = 4.12) and FP (ICC 1,3 = 0.990, CV = 2.92). Validity assessment showed strong agreement between the AI model and FP (ICC 2,k = 0.973). This was also supported by the Bland-Altman analysis, and the ordinary least products regression revealed no significant systematic or proportional bias. The AI-driven model in My Jump 2 is highly reliable and valid for estimating jump height. Strength and conditioning professionals may use the AI-based mobile app for accurate jump height measurements, offering a practical and efficient alternative to traditional methods.

The validity and reliability of the My Jump 2 app for measuring vertical stiffness in male college players

Background

Vertical stiffness (Kvert) can be used to evaluate sports performance and injury risk in players. The My Jump 2 smartphone application (App), is increasingly being used by researchers, coaches, and players in the competitive sports field. We aimed to analyze the reliability and concurrent validity of the My Jump 2 app for measuring Kvert in male college players.

Methods

Twenty male college players (10 soccer players, 10 basketball players; age, 20.2 ± 1.3 years old; weight, 76.4 ± 6.0 kg; height, 178.3 ± 4.7 cm) volunteered to take part in this study. Three drop jumps were performed by participants from 30 cm to 40 cm on a force platform and retested after three days. All the jumps were recorded by both the Force platform and the My Jump 2 app. Data obtained from the above two devices were compared using the paired t tests, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation (CV), Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r), Bland-Altman plots, and one-way regression.

Results

There was almost perfect agreement between measurement instruments for the Kvert value (ICC > 0.972, 95% CI = 0.954-0.992, P < 0.01). Almost perfect agreement was observed between evaluators (ICC > 0.989, 95% CI = 0.981-0.997, P < 0.05). Also, the My Jump 2 app showed excellent intra-rater reliability in all participants (ICC = 1.000, 95% CI = 1.000-1.000, P < 0.001). The My Jump 2 showed good variability when measuring Kvert at T1 30 cm (CV = 5.4%), T1 40 cm (CV = 6.7%), T2 30 cm (CV = 5.0%), and T2 40 cm (CV = 10.3%). The test-retest reliability of My Jump 2 was moderate to good at 30 cm (ICC = 0.708, 95% CI = 0.509-0.827); however, it was lower to moderate at 40 cm (ICC = 0.445, 95% CI = 0.222-0.625). Very large correlations were observed between the force platform and the My Jump 2 for Kvert (r > 0.9655, P < 0.001).

Conclusion

The My Jump 2 smartphone application showed excellent reliability and intra-rater consistency in measuring Kvert in male college players. While demonstrating excellent intra-rater consistency and strong agreement with force platform measurements, it showed slightly lower reliability at higher jump heights. Overall, the My Jump 2 app is a valid tool for evaluating Kvert in college players with careful consideration of its limitations, particularly at higher jump heights.

Validity and reliability of My Jump 2® app to measure the vertical jump on elite women beach volleyball players

Purpose

The aim of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the My Jump 2® app in measuring jump height, flight time, and peak power among elite women beach volleyball players on sand surfaces.

Methods

Eleven elite female beach volleyball players (aged 23.6 ± 6.2 years; weight 66.3 ± 5.8 kg; height 174.4 ± 5.8 cm; with 8.4 ± 4.8 years of professional experience) participated in this study. Each player performed six countermovement jumps in a wooden box filled with sand on a force platform while simultaneously recording a video for subsequent analysis using the My Jump 2® app.

Results

We found excellent agreement for flight time, jump height and peak power between observers (ICC = 0.92, 0.91 and 0.97, respectively). No significant differences between force platform and My Jump 2® app were detected in the values obtained for the three variables (P > 0.05). For the force platform and the My Jump 2® app, we found a good agreement measuring jump height and flight time (ICC = 0.85 and 0.85, respectively). However, we only found a moderate agreement for peak power (ICC = 0.64). The difference in jump height showed a limit of agreement between -4.10 and 4.74 cm in Bland-Altman, indicating a high level of agreement between the two measurement tools.

Conclusion

Based on our findings, the My Jump 2® app reveals a valid tool for measuring jump height and flight time of CMJ on sand surfaces. However, more caution is needed when measuring peak power.

Validity and reliability of the My Jump 2 app for detecting interlimb asymmetry in young female basketball players

Introduction

The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the My Jump 2 app for the assessment of interlimb jump asymmetry in young female basketball players.

Methods

Nine athletes (age 15 ± 0.9 years; weight 62.9 ± 5.8 kg; height 173.6 ± 6.1 cm) performed single-leg drop jumps (DJs) and both-leg drop jumps on a force plate (Kistler Quattro jump) and were simultaneously recorded on two smartphones using the My Jump 2 app. Jump height from flight time and contact time data were statistically analyzed to evaluate the validity of two different camera settings, drop jump performance, and interlimb jump asymmetry in basketball players. The testing was repeated after 1 week for test retest reliability.

Results

High test-retest reliability [intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) > 0.88] was observed in DJ height. High correlation between the force plate and the My Jump 2 app was observed in DJ height (r = 0.99) and DJ contact time (r = 0.98). For the interlimb jump height asymmetries, mean differences were 0.6 percentages for the My Jump 2 app and the force plate, respectively (p = 0.77). Inter-device reliability revealed almost perfect correlation for the DJ height (ICC = 0.99, r = 0.98).

Conclusion

The My Jump 2 app is a valid and reliable tool to assess drop jump performance and interlimb asymmetry in young female basketball players.

Validity and reliability of "My Jump app" to assess vertical jump performance: a meta-analytic review

This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the validity and reliability of the My Jump smartphone application in measuring vertical jump height, specifically using flight-time-based measures. To identify potential studies for inclusion, a comprehensive search strategy was employed in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and EBSCO host databases. Validity was assessed in two ways: (1) mean and standard deviations of My Jump measurements were compared to criterion methods to assess the agreement of raw scores; (2) correlation coefficients evaluated the within-group consistency of rankings between My Jump and criterion methods. Reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Heterogeneity was evaluated via Cochrane's Q statistic, its p-value, I2 value, and tau2 value. Publication bias was explored through funnel plot symmetry and confirmed with extended Egger's test. Following the search, 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. Results showed no significant difference in raw scores between My Jump and criterion methods, indicating high agreement. High correlation was also found for within-group rankings, suggesting consistency. The My Jump application demonstrated nearly perfect reliability scores. The My Jump application appears to be a valid and reliable tool for sports scientists and strength and conditioning practitioners, offering a cost-effective and accessible means for accurately assessing vertical jump performance in various settings. However, it should be noted that these results are specific to flight-time-based measures, and further research is needed to validate these findings against gold-standard take-off velocity methods.

The MyJump App is a Valid Method of Assessing and Classifying Limb Symmetry During Recovery from Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Background

Jump testing performance and limb symmetry measures are important metrics for clinicians to monitor during rehabilitation after Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction, however they require hardware and software which is not commonly available in clinical practice. Video-based solutions may present a feasible alternative, but their veracity in classifying patients using limb-symmetry of 90% has not been established, nor have the clinimetric values for the performance measures been reported in this population.

Purpose

To describe the diagnostic accuracy (pass/fail using 90% LSI) and clinimetrics of an iPad-based app ("MyJump") compared to reference force plate analyses for limb symmetry, jump/hop height, contact time, flight time, and reactive strength index.

Prospective cohort, diagnostic accuracy.

Methods

Fifty-one consecutive patients recovering from ACL reconstruction undertaking routine independent clinical evaluation of their hop and jump performance were concurrently and independently examined using force plates and the MyJump app. Diagnostic accuracy of MyJump was compared to reference force plate analyses using a criterion of 90% limb symmetry.

Results

Diagnostic accuracy of the MyJump app was very good: positive predictive value for jump height was 0.83 and 1.0 for reactive strength index, and negative predictive value was 0.95 and 1.0 for the same metrics, respectively. Of the 131 classifications made using the MyJump app, there were five false positives and three false negatives - all of these were in classification of jump height with no misclassifications of RSI. Irrespective of jump type, the MyJump app displayed excellent reliability (ICC>0.95) for both height and reactive strength index. Minimum detectable changes were approximately 1cm for height, 0.1 for reactive strength index, 0.02s for contact time, and 0.3s for flight time.

Conclusion

Where force plates are unavailable, the MyJump app is a valid and reliable substitute for criteria assessment of jump/hop height and reactive strength index in those recovering from ACL surgery using a 90% limb symmetry threshold. The minimum detectable changes vary by metric but are likely sufficiently accurate to detect clinical changes.

Effects of 12-week full body resistance exercise on vertical jumping with and without military equipment in Slovenian Armed Forces

INTRODUCTION

Jumping ability is one of the most important physical qualities in military personnel. Previous training intervention studies have shown equivocal effects on jumping ability. In this study, we assessed the effect of a 12-week resistance exercise programme on countermovement jump (CMJ) performance with and without military equipment.

METHODS

Ninety-six members of the Slovenian Armed Forces (age range 20-47 years) were allocated to the intervention (n=65) and the control (n=32) group. The intervention group performed 2 sessions of full body resistance exercise per week for 12 weeks, while the control group continued with their regular training routine. Before and after the intervention, CMJ assessment using force plates was conducted with and without military equipment.

RESULTS

CMJ testing with and without equipment both exhibited high to excellent relative and absolute reliability. The intervention elicited statistically significant (p=0.011-0.026; η2=0.05-0.06), but small improvements in CMJ height when performed without equipment (from 28.2±3.8 cm to 29.5±3.3 cm) and with equipment (from 25.3±3.7 cm to 27.1±6.1). Other variables showed even smaller or trivial changes.

CONCLUSIONS

This study suggests that CMJ with equipment could be a reliable tool to assess jumping performance specific to requirements of military work, which would increase the ecological validity of the testing. The present structured full-body training intervention showed modest improvements in jumping ability in both testing conditions.
