Indium-antimony-halide single crystals for high-efficiency white-light emission and anti-counterfeiting

Recent strategies for triplet-state emission regulation toward non-lead organic-inorganic metal halides

Organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have strengthened the development of triplet-state emission materials due to their excellent luminescence performance. Due to the inherent toxicity of lead (Pb) significantly limiting its further advancement, numerous studies have been conducted to regulate triplet-state emission of non-Pb OIMHs, and several feasible strategies have been proposed. However, most of the non-Pb OIMHs reported have a relatively short lifetime or a low luminescence efficiency, not in favor of their application. In this review, we provide a summary of recent reports on the regulation of triplet-state emissions in non-Pb OIMHs to provide benefits for the design of innovative luminescent materials. Our focus is primarily on exploring the internal and external factors that influence the triplet-state emission. Starting from the luminescence mechanism, the current strategies for regulating triplet-state emissions are summarized. Moreover, by manipulating these strategies, it becomes feasible to achieve triplet-state emissions that span a range of colors from blue to red, and even extend into the near-infrared spectrum with high luminescence efficiency, while also increasing their lifetimes. This review not only provides fresh insights into the advancement of triplet-state emissions in OIMHs but also integrates experimental and theoretical perspectives to illuminate the trajectory of future research endeavors.

Full-color, time-valve controllable and Janus-type long-persistent luminescence from all-inorganic halide perovskites

Long persistent luminescence (LPL) has gained considerable attention for the applications in decoration, emergency signage, information encryption and biomedicine. However, recently developed LPL materials - encompassing inorganics, organics and inorganic-organic hybrids - often display monochromatic afterglow with limited functionality. Furthermore, triplet exciton-based phosphors are prone to thermal quenching, significantly restricting their high emission efficiency. Here, we show a straightforward wet-chemistry approach for fabricating multimode LPL materials by introducing both anion (Br-) and cation (Sn2+) doping into hexagonal CsCdCl3 all-inorganic perovskites. This process involves establishing new trapping centers from [CdCl6-nBrn]4- and/or [Sn2-nCdnCl9]5- linker units, disrupting the local symmetry in the host framework. These halide perovskites demonstrate afterglow duration time ( > 2,000 s), nearly full-color coverage, high photoluminescence quantum yield ( ~ 84.47%), and the anti-thermal quenching temperature up to 377 K. Particularly, CsCdCl3:x%Br display temperature-dependent LPL and time-valve controllable time-dependent luminescence, while CsCdCl3:x%Sn exhibit forward and reverse excitation-dependent Janus-type luminescence. Combining both experimental and computational studies, this finding not only introduces a local-symmetry breaking strategy for simultaneously enhancing afterglow lifetime and efficiency, but also provides new insights into the multimode LPL materials with dynamic tunability for applications in luminescence, photonics, high-security anti-counterfeiting and information storage.

Blue Long Afterglow and Ultra Broadband Vis-NIR Emission from All-Inorganic Copper-Doped Silver Halide Single Crystals

All-inorganic metal halides with afterglow emission have attracted increasing attention due to their significantly longer afterglow duration and higher stability compared to their organic-inorganic hybrid counterparts. However, their afterglow colors have not yet reached the blue spectral region. Here, we report all-inorganic copper-doped Rb2AgBr3 single crystals with ultralong blue afterglow (>300 s) by modulating defect states through doping engineering. The introduction of copper(I) ions into Rb2AgBr3 facilitates the formation of bromine vacancies, thus increasing the density of trap states available for charge storage and enabling bright, persistent emission after ceasing the excitation. Moreover, cascade energy transfer between distinct emissive centers in the crystals results in ultra-broadband photoluminescence, not only covering the whole white light with near-unity quantum yield but also extending into the near-infrared region. This 'cocktail' of exotic light-emission properties, in conjunction with the excellent stability of copper-doped Rb2AgBr3 crystals, allowed us to demonstrate their implementation to solid-state lighting, night vision, and intelligent anti-counterfeiting.

Excitation-Dependent Emission in Sb3+-Doped All-Inorganic Rare-Earth Double Perovskites for Anticounterfeiting Applications

Achieving high-efficiency tunable emission in a single phosphor remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report a series of Sb3+-doped all-inorganic double perovskites, Sb3+:Cs2NaScCl6, with efficient excitation-dependent emission. In 0.5%Sb3+:Cs2NaScCl6, strong blue emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 85% is obtained under 265 nm light irradiation, which turns into bright neutral white light with a PLQY of 56% when excited at 303 nm. Spectroscopic and computational investigations were performed to reveal the mechanism of this excitation-dependent emission. Sb3+ doping induces two different excitation channels: the internal transition of Sb3+: 5s2 → 5s5p and the electron transfer transition of Sb3+: 5s → Sc3+ 3d. The former one generates excited Sb3+ ions, which can undergo efficient energy transfer to populate the host self-trapped exciton (STE) state, yielding enhanced blue emission. The latter one leads to the formation of a new STE state with the hole localized on Sb3+ and the electron delocalized on the nearest Sc3+, which accounts for the newly exhibited low-energy emission. The difference in the excitation pathways of the two emitting STE states results in the highly efficient excitation-dependent emission, making the doped systems promising anticounterfeiting materials.

Achieving Near-Unity Red Light Photoluminescence in Antimony Halide Crystals via Polyhedron Regulation

Exploration of efficient red emitting antimony hybrid halide with large Stokes shift and zero self-absorption is highly desirable due to its enormous potential for applications in solid light emitting, and active optical waveguides. However, it is still challenging and rarely reported. Herein, a series of (TMS)2SbCl5 (TMS=triphenylsulfonium cation) crystals have been prepared with diverse [SbCl5]2- configurations and distinctive emission color. Among them, cubic-phase (TMS)2SbCl5 shows bright red emission with a large Stokes shift of 312 nm. In contrast, monoclinic and orthorhombic (TMS)2SbCl5 crystals deliver efficient yellow and orange emission, respectively. Comprehensive structural investigations reveal that larger Stokes shift and longer-wavelength emission of cubic (TMS)2SbCl5 can be attributed to the larger lattice volume and longer Sb⋅⋅⋅Sb distance, which favor sufficient structural aberration freedom at excited states. Together with robust stability, (TMS)2SbCl5 crystal family has been applied as optical waveguide with ultralow loss coefficient of 3.67 ⋅ 10-4 dB μm-1, and shows superior performance in white-light emission and anti-counterfeiting. In short, our study provides a novel and fundamental perspective to structure-property-application relationship of antimony hybrid halides, which will contribute to future rational design of high-performance emissive metal halides.

Glass Disorder Modulated Luminescence in Zero-Dimensional Antimony-Chloride Coplanar Dimers for Optical Anti-counterfeiting

Zero-dimensional metal halides have received wide attention due to their structural diversity, strong quantum confinement, and associated excellent photoluminescence properties. A reversible and tunable luminescence would be desirable for applications such as anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and artificial intelligence. Yet, these materials are underexplored, with little known about their luminescence tuning mechanisms. Here we report a pyramidal coplanar dimer, (TBA)Sb2Cl7 (TBA = tetrabutylammonium), showing broadband emission wavelength tuning (585-650 nm) by simple thermal treatment. We attribute the broad color change to structural disorder induced by varying the heat treatment temperatures. Increasing the heating temperature transitions the material from long-range ordered crystalline phase to highly disordered glassy phase. The latter exhibits stronger electron-phonon coupling, enhancing the self-trapped exciton emission efficiency. The work provides a new material platform for manifold optical anti-counterfeiting applications and sheds light on the emission color tuning mechanisms for further design of stimuli-responsive materials.

Yellow-Orange Emission in Sb3+-Doped Hexakis(thiocarbamidium) Hexabromoindium(III) Tribromide

A luminescent zero-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid indium halide (TUH)6[In1-xSbxBr6]Br3 (TU = thiourea, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.0998) was synthesized via the solvothermal method. In structures, resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, isolated distorted [InBr6]3- and [SbBr6]3- octahedra are linked to organic TUH+ cations by intermolecular N-H···Br and N-H···S hydrogen bonds. The crystals were characterized by elemental analysis, TG-DSC, powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR analysis, and steady-state absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. (TUH)6[In1-xSbxBr6]Br3 exhibits a broadband yellow-orange emission centered at 595-602 nm with a half-width of 141-149 nm (0.48-0.52 eV) and a large Stokes shift of 232-238 nm (1.33-1.35 eV). This emission can be attributed to the self-trapped exciton emission of triplet states of the octahedral anion [SbBr6]3- or [InBr6]3-. Two possible emission mechanisms were discussed. Doping with Sb3+ leads to a significant increase in photoluminescence quantum yield from 25.7 at x = 0 to 48.4% at x = 0.0065, when excited at 365 nm, indicating the potential use of (TUH)6[In1-xSbxBr6]Br3 compounds in the field of photonics.

Lead-free Perovskite with Distorted [InX6]3- Octahedron Induced by Organic Cation and Enhanced PLQY by Sb Doping

In-based halide perovskites have attracted a lot of attention because of their unique broadband emission properties. Herein, a series of In-based hybrid perovskites of (H2MP)2InCl7·H2O (1), (H2EP)2InCl7·H2O (2), (H2MP)2InBr7·H2O (3), and (H2EP)2InBr7·H2O (4) were synthesized under the control of halogen ions and organic cations. 1, 2, and 4 exhibit obvious photoluminescence properties with peaks at 392, 442, and 652 nm, respectively. The effects of the different components on the crystal structure and photoluminescence properties are discussed by calculating the structural distortion of the [InX6]3- octahedron. The photoluminescence properties of 1 and 4 were significantly improved after Sb3+ doping with PLQY values of 57.12 and 41.53%. Finally, a white LED was successfully fabricated with the two doped compounds coated onto the 365 nm blue LED chip.

Revealing the Structure-Luminescence Relationship in Robust Sn(IV)-Based Metal Halides by Sb3+ Doping

Low-dimensional hybrid metal halides are an emerging class of materials with highly efficient photoluminescence (PL), but the problems of poor stability remain challenging. Sn(IV)-based metal halides show robust structure but exhibit poor PL properties, and the structure-luminescence relationship is elusive. Herein, two Sn(IV)-based metal halides (compounds 1 and 2) with the same constituent ((C6H16N2)SnCl6) but different crystal structures have been prepared, which however show poor PL properties at room temperature due to the absence of active ns2 electrons. To improve materials' PL properties, Sb3+ with active 5s2 electrons was embedded into the lattice of Sn4+-based hosts. As a result, efficient emissions were achieved for Sb3+-doped compounds 1 and 2 with a maximum PL efficiency of 14.28 and 62%, respectively. Experimental and calculation results reveal that the smaller distorted lattice structure of the host could result in the blueshift of the emission from Sb3+. Thus, a tunable color from red to orange was realized. Benefiting from the broadband efficient emission from Sb3+-doped compound 2, an efficient white light-emitting diode with a high color rendering index of up to 92.3 was fabricated to demonstrate its lighting application potential. This work promotes the understanding of the influence of robust Sn(IV)-based host lattice on the PL properties of Sb3+, advancing the development of environmentally friendly, low-cost, and high-efficiency Sn(IV)-based metal halides.

Multi-stimuli-responsive luminescence enabled by crown ether anchored chiral antimony halide phosphors

Stimuli-responsive optical materials have provided a powerful impetus for the development of intelligent optoelectronic devices. The family of organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides, distinguished by their structural diversity, presents a prospective platform for the advancement of stimuli-responsive optical materials. Here, we have employed a crown ether to anchor the A-site cation of a chiral antimony halide, enabling convenient control and modulation of its photophysical properties. The chirality-dependent asymmetric lattice distortion of inorganic skeletons assisted by a crown ether promotes the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs), leading to a high photoluminescence quantum yield of over 85%, concomitant with the effective circularly polarized luminescence. The antimony halide enantiomers showcase highly sensitive stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours towards excitation wavelength and temperature simultaneously, exhibiting a versatile reversible colour switching capability from blue to white and further to orange. In situ temperature-dependent luminescence spectra, time-resolved luminescence spectra and theoretical calculations reveal that the multi-stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours stem from distinct STEs within zero-dimensional lattices. By virtue of the inherent flexibility and adaptability, these chiral antimony chlorides have promising prospects for future applications in cutting-edge fields such as multifunctional illumination technologies and intelligent sensing devices.

Zero-dimensional hybrid tin halides with stable broadband light emissions

Considering the instability and toxicity of 3D Pb-based perovskite nanocrystals, lead-free low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted widespread attention as potential substitutes. Herein, two new tin-based 0D halides [H4BAPP]SnBr5·Br and [H4BAPP]SnCl5·Cl·H2O (BAPP = 1,4-bis(3-aminopropyl)piperazine) were synthesized successfully based on [SnX5]3- as an emission center. Typically, [H4BAPP]SnBr5·Br and [H4BAPP]SnCl5·Cl·H2O display broadband yellow and yellow-green light emissions originating from the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons (STEs). The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the two compounds were calculated to be 19.27% and 2.36%, respectively. Furthermore, the excellent chemical and thermal stability and broadband light emissions reveal their potential application in solid-state white lighting diodes.

Polymeric Metal Halides with Bright Luminescence and Versatile Processability

Most of current metal halide materials, including all inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrids, are crystalline materials with poor workability and plasticity that limit their application scope. Here, we develop a novel class of materials termed polymeric metal halides (PMHs) through introducing polycations into antimony-based metal halide materials as A-site cations. A series of PMHs with orange-yellow broadband emission and large Stokes shift originating from inorganic self-trapped excitons are successfully prepared, which meanwhile exhibit the excellent processability and formability of polymers. The versatility of these PMHs is manifested as the broad choices of polycations, the ready extension to manganese- and copper-based halides, and the tolerance to molar ratios between polycations and metal halides in the formation of PMHs. The merger of polymer chemistry and inorganic chemistry thus provides a novel generic platform for the development of metal halide functional materials.

Sb3+-Doped Indium-Based Metal Halide (Gua)3InCl6 with Efficient Yellow Emission

In recent years, low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIHMHs) have shown excellent photophysical properties due to their quantum structure, adjustable energy levels, and energy transfer between inorganic and organic components, which have attracted extensive attention from researchers. Herein, we synthesize a zero-dimensional (0D) OIHMH, Sb3+:(Gua)3InCl6, by introducing Sb3+ into (Gua)3InCl6, which undergoes a significant enhancement of the emission peak at 580 nm with the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) boosted from 17.86 to 95.72% when excited at 340 nm. This boost in photoluminescence of the doped sample was studied by combining ultrafast femtosecond transient absorption, temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, revealing the process of self-trapped exciton (STE) recombination to emit light at both Sb and In sites in this 0D structure simultaneously. This material with the lowest dark STE level at the In site for emission in the undoped sample can amazingly yield very strong emission in the doped sample, which has never been observed before. Finally, we tested its application in a photoelectric device. This work not only helps to gain a deeper understanding of the formation of STEs in In-based halides but also plays a certain guiding role in the design of new luminescent materials.

Mapping Uncharted Lead-Free Halide Perovskites and Related Low-Dimensional Structures

Research on perovskites has grown exponentially in the past decade due to the potential of methyl ammonium lead iodide in photovoltaics. Although these devices have achieved remarkable and competitive power conversion efficiency, concerns have been raised regarding the toxicity of lead and its impact on scaling up the technology. Eliminating lead while conserving the performance of photovoltaic devices is a great challenge. To achieve this goal, the research has been expanded to thousands of compounds with similar or loosely related crystal structures and compositions. Some materials are "re-discovered", and some are yet unexplored, but predictions suggest that their potential applications may go beyond photovoltaics, for example, spintronics, photodetection, photocatalysis, and many other areas. This short review aims to present the classification, some current mapping strategies, and advances of lead-free halide double perovskites, their derivatives, lead-free perovskitoid, and low-dimensional related crystals.

A 0D hybrid lead-free halide with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield toward multifunctional optoelectronic applications

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides have emerged as highly efficient luminescent materials, but integrated multifunction in a structural platform remains a significant challenge. Herein, a new hybrid 0D indium halide of (Im-BDMPA)InCl6·H2O was designed as a highly efficient luminescent emitter and X-ray scintillator toward multiple optoelectronic applications. Specifically, it displays strong broadband yellow light emission with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) through Sb3+ doping, acting as a down-conversion phosphor to fabricate high-performance white light emitting diodes (WLEDs). Benefiting from the high PLQY and negligible self-absorption characteristics, this halide exhibits extraordinary X-ray scintillation performance with a high light yield of 55 320 photons per MeV, which represents a new scintillator in 0D hybrid indium halides. Further combined merits of a low detection limit (0.0853 μGyair s-1), ultra-high spatial resolution of 17.25 lp per mm and negligible afterglow time (0.48 ms) demonstrate its excellent application prospects in X-ray imaging. In addition, this 0D halide also exhibits reversible luminescence off-on switching toward tribromomethane (TBM) but fails in any other organic solvents with an ultra-low detection limit of 0.1 ppm, acting as a perfect real-time fluorescent probe to detect TBM with ultrahigh sensitivity, selectivity and repeatability. Therefore, this work highlights the multiple optoelectronic applications of 0D hybrid lead-free halides in white LEDs, X-ray scintillation, fluorescence sensors, etc.

Temperature-Induced Reversible Photoluminescence Switching and Ultraviolet-Pumped Light-Emitting Diode Applications of a Perovskite (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O Crystal

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid halides present many fascinating photophysical properties for promising optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), X-ray imaging, photodetectors, and anticounterfeiting. Herein, a centimeter-sized single crystal (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O with a 0D perovskite structure was obtained via a solvent evaporation method. A bright red emission at 618 nm with a larger Stokes shift of more than 300 nm and a long fluorescence lifetime of 6.21 ms were measured. Notably, a reversible PL switching from red emission to nonluminescence has been presented in the cycles of heating-cooling processes from RT to 100 °C. Furthermore, the temperature-induced luminescence shows a quick recovery after 20 conversion cycles, exhibiting excellent stability and temperature sensing. According to the structural and theoretical analyses, the temperature-induced luminescence is primarily due to hydrogen-bonding interactions between (MnCl6)4- and H2O molecules. Particularly, a temperature anticounterfeiting application has been designed based on its reversible temperature-dependent PL switching. Importantly, the ultraviolet-pumped LEDs fabricated by (C6H10N2)2MnCl6·2H2O single crystals are perfectly achieved. Anyway, this work clearly demonstrates that 0D Mn-based perovskite with temperature-dependent PL switching greatly extends its potential applications in electro-optical display, temperature sensing, and anticounterfeiting devices.

Sb-Doped Cs3 TbCl6 Nanocrystals for Highly Efficient Narrow-Band Green Emission and X-Ray Imaging

Metal halide nanocrystals (NCs) with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are desirable for lighting, display, and X-ray detection. Herein, the novel lanthanide-based halide NCs are committed to designing and optimizing the optical and scintillating properties, so as to unravel the PL origin, exciton dynamics, and optoelectronic applications. Sb-doped zero-dimensional (0D) Cs3 TbCl6 NCs exhibit a green emission with a narrow full width of half maximum of 8.6 nm, and the best PLQY of 48.1% is about three times higher than that of undoped NCs. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that 0D crystalline and electronic structures make the exciton highly localized on [TbCl6 ]3- octahedron, which boosts the Cl- -Tb3+ charge transfer process, thus resulting in bright Tb3+ emission. More importantly, the introduction of Sb3+ not only facilitates the photon absorption transition, but also builds an effective thermally boosting energy transfer channel assisted by [SbCl6 ]3- -induced self-trapped state, which is responsible for the PL enhancement. The high luminescence efficiency and negligible self-absorption of the Cs3 TbCl6 : Sb nanoscintillator enable a more sensitive X-ray detection response compared with undoped sample. The study opens a new perspective to deeply understand the excited state dynamics of metal halide NCs, which helps to design high-performance luminescent lanthanide-based nanomaterials.

Antimony-Triggered Tunable White Light Emission in Lead-Free Zero-Dimensional Indium Halide with Ultrastable CCT of White Light Emitting Diodes

A highly efficient and easily tunable luminescence is significant for solid-state luminescent (SSL) materials. However, achieving a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) close to unity and tuning the emission remain challenging tasks. Metal doping strategies enable resolution of these issues. Herein, we report the preparation of a novel organic-inorganic lead-free indium-based metal halide hybrid (MP)3InCl6•EtOH (MP = C4H10ON) with a typical zero-dimension structure. When excited at 320 nm, (MP)3InCl6•EtOH exhibits a dual emission band at 420 and 600 nm, which originates from the organic cation [MP] and the [InCl6]3- octahedral unit. The photoluminescence can be significantly enhanced through Sb3+ doping, resulting in an increase in PLQY from 0.78% to near unity. Multiple emission color tunings have been achieved by regulating the Sb doping level and the radiation wavelength, resulting in a change in emission color from blue → white → orange. Optical characterizations reveal that the significantly enhanced emission centered at 600 nm can be attributed to more efficient absorption, closely associated with an additional 1S0 → 3P1 transition in the inorganic octahedron [In(Sb)Cl6]3- due to Sb3+ doping. With its excellent optical performance, a white light emitting diode (WLED) has been successfully fabricated by coating the mixture of (MP)3InCl6•EtOH:15%Sb3+ with blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ onto a UV LED chip. The WLED device exhibits perfect white light emission with regard to the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) coordinates of (0.36, 0.34). Significantly, the WLED device maintains a stable correlated color temperature (CCT) range of 4119-4393 K and CIE coordinates (x: 0.37-0.34, y: 0.35-0.33) as the driven current varies from 20 to 200 mA, demonstrating outstanding stability across different power levels. This work not only presents a novel system for achieving remarkably enhanced luminescent performance and tuning emission bands in 0D metal halides but also represents a significant step toward achieving resistance to color drifting for stable WLEDs.

Free Halogen Substitution of Chiral Hybrid Metal Halides for Activating the Linear and Nonlinear Chiroptical Properties

Halogen substitution has been proven as an effective approach to the band gap engineering and optoelectronic modulation of organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide (OIHMH) materials. Various high-performance mixed halide OIHMH film materials have been primarily obtained through the substitution of coordinated halogens in their inorganic octahedra. Herein, we propose a new strategy of substitution of free halogen outside the inorganic octahedra for constructing mixed halide OIHMH single crystals with chiral structures, resulting in a boost of their linear and nonlinear chiroptical properties. The substitution from DMA4[InCl6]Cl (DMA = dimethylammonium) to DMA4[InCl6]Br crystals through a facile antisolvent vaporization method produces centimeter-scale single crystals with high thermal stability along with high quantum yield photoluminescence, conspicuous circularly polarized luminescence, and greatly enhanced second harmonic generation (SHG). In particular, the obtained DMA4[InCl6]Br single crystal features an intrinsic chiral structure, exhibiting a significant SHG circular dichroism (SHG-CD) response with a highest reported anisotropy factor (gSHG-CD) of 1.56 among chiral OIHMH materials. The enhancements in both linear and nonlinear chiroptical properties are directly attributed to the modulation of octahedral distortion. The mixed halide OIHMH single crystals obtained by free halogen substitution confine the introduced halogens within free halogen sites of the lattice, thereby ensuring the stability of compositions and properties. The successful employment of such a free halogen substitution approach may broaden the horizon of the regulation of structures and the optoelectronic properties of the OIHMH materials.

Pressure-Regulated Excitonic Transitions in Emergent Metal Halides

ConspectusEmergent metal halides are generating significant interest as novel optical materials, and their diverse applications have brought them to the spotlight of chemistry and material science. The optical properties of semiconducting metal halides are fundamentally dominated by excitonic transitions, which refer to the complex processes of excitonic formation, self-trapping, as well as subsequent transitions of intersystem crossing (ISC) and internal conversion (IC). In this regard, high pressure has recently opened a new research dimension to regulate excitonic transitions in metal halides via continuous structural modulations, to understand the intriguing excitonic emissions from a new perspective. In this Account, we aim to rationalize the fundamental strategy for modulating and optimizing the optical properties of metal halides based on delicate exciton regulation via high-pressure method. First, the band gaps of metal halides that are directly related to the efficiency of excitonic formation, are accurately modulated through contraction, distortion, and destruction of metal-halogen polyhedra under compression. Then, considerable enhancement of self-trapped exciton emission is demonstrated by inducing proper polyhedral distortions via high-pressure method. Furthermore, the emission energy of metal halides could also be controllably and widely tuned through pressure-modulated excitonic transitions. Upon compression on different metal halides, excitonic IC is promoted with sufficient polyhedral distortions, and different sets of ISC could also be achieved. In the end, we emphasize the significance of high-pressure investigations in uncovering the complex excitonic transitions in emergent metal halides and predicting novel metal halides with desired optical properties at ambient conditions. It is expected that these discussions could inspire researchers in different fields to perform interdisciplinary high-pressure studies on novel functional materials.

0D hybrid indium halide as a highly efficient X-ray scintillation and ultra-sensitive fluorescent probe

Halide perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) of 3D CsPbX3 as a scintillator has aroused intensive attention with advanced applications in radiation detection and X-ray imaging. However, the low light yield and serious toxicity of Pb2+ severely hinder advanced optoelectronic applications. To reduce these fatal shortcomings, a family of new environmentally friendly 0D hybrid lead-free indium halides of [DADPA]InX6·H2O (DADPA = 3,3'-diaminodipropylamine; X = Cl and Br) was prepared. Upon UV excitation, these halides display strong broadband yellow-orange light emissions, and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) can be optimized up to near unity through the Sb3+-doping strategy. Significantly, high PLQY, negligible self-absorption and low attenuation ability toward X-ray render extraordinary scintillation performance with a high light yield of 51 875 photons MeV-1 and ultralow detection limit of 98.3 nGyair s-1, which is far superior to typical 3D PNC scintillators. Additionally, the ultra-high spatial resolution of 25.15 lp mm-1, negligible afterglow time (2.75 ms) and robust radiant stability demonstrates excellent X-ray imaging performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on X-ray scintillation based on 0D indium halide materials.

Solution-Obtained (NH4)3In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 with High External Photoluminescence Quantum Yield and Excellent Antiquenching Properties

The efficient broad-band emission from low-dimensional metal halides has garnered significant interest. However, most of these materials exhibit poor stability at the operating temperature of light-emitting diodes. In this study, using the solution method (temperature lower than 90 °C), a new compound (NH4)3In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 was obtained with the structure in the Pnma space group featuring unit-cell parameters of a = 12.3871(4) Å, b = 24.9895(9) Å, and c = 7.7844(3) Å. (NH4)3In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 can be prepared by doping (NH4)2InCl5·H2O when the Sb3+ feeding ratio is in the range of 30-80%. Thermal analysis reveals that (NH4)3In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 is stable up to 320 °C. (NH4)3In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 exhibits broad-band yellow-white emission with extremely high internal and external photoluminescence quantum yields of 93 and 77%, respectively. Interestingly, (NH4)3In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 displays remarkable resistance to thermal quenching, retaining 83% of its initial photoluminescence intensity at 80 °C. A white light-emitting diode is fabricated by combining (NH4)3In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 with a commercial phosphor, and a high color rendering of 92.8 was obtained. This work presents an environmentally friendly, efficient, stable UV-excited broad-band emission material for potential solid-state lighting applications.

Ultralow-loss Optical Waveguides through Balancing Deep-Blue TADF and Orange Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Hybrid Antimony Halide Microstructures

Harnessing the potential of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is crucial for developing light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, sensors, and many others. However, effective strategies in this domain are still relatively scarce. This study presents a new approach to achieving highly efficient deep-blue TADF (with a PLQY of 25 %) and low-energy orange RTP (with a PLQY of 90 %) through the fabrication of lead-free hybrid halides. This new class of monomeric and dimeric 0D antimony halides can be facilely synthesized using a bottom-up solution process, requiring only a few seconds to minutes, which offer exceptional stability and nontoxicity. By leveraging the highly adaptable molecular arrangement and crystal packing modes, the hybrid antimony halides demonstrate the ability to self-assemble into regular 1D microrod and 2D microplate morphologies. This self-assembly is facilitated by multiple non-covalent interactions between the inorganic cores and organic shells. Notably, these microstructures exhibit outstanding polarized luminescence and function as low-dimensional optical waveguides with remarkably low optical-loss coefficients. Therefore, this work not only presents a pioneering demonstration of deep-blue TADF in hybrid antimony halides, but also introduces 1D and 2D micro/nanostructures that hold promising potential for applications in white LEDs and low-dimensional photonic systems.

Achieving Color-Tunable Long Persistent Luminescence in Cs2 CdCl4 Ruddlesden-Popper Phase Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D)-halide perovskites have been enriched over recent years to offer remarkable features from diverse chemical structures and environmental stability endowed with exciting functionalities in photoelectric detectors and phosphorescence systems. However, the low conversion efficiency of singlet to triplet in 2D hybrid halide perovskites reduces phosphorescence lifetimes. In this study, the long persistent luminescence of 2D all-inorganic perovskites with a self-assembled 2D interlayer galleries structure is investigated. The results show that the decay time of the long persistent luminescence increases from 450 s to 600 s, and the luminescence color changes from cyan to orange, and the thermal stability of photoluminescence enhances dramatically after replacing Cd2+ by appropriate Mn2+ ions in 2D Cs2 CdCl4 Ruddlesden-Popper phase perovskites. Furthermore, diversified anti-counterfeiting modes are fabricated to highlight the promising applications of Cs2 CdCl4 perovskite systems with tunable persistent luminescence in advanced anti-counterfeiting. Therefore, our studies provide a novel model for realizing tunable long persistent luminescence of perovskite with 2D self-assembled layered structure for advanced anti-counterfeiting.

Integrating Achiral and Chiral Organic Ligands in Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Metal Halides to Boost Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Chiral zero-dimensional hybrid metal halides (0D HMHs) could combine excellent optical properties and chirality, making them promising for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). However, chiral 0D HMHs with efficient CPL have been rarely reported. Here, we propose an efficient strategy to achieve simultaneously high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and large dissymmetry factor (glum ), by integrating achiral and chiral ligands into 0D HMHs. Specifically, three pairs of chiral 0D hybrid indium-antimony chlorides are synthesized by combing achiral guanidine with three types of chiral methylbenzylammonium-based derivatives as the organic cations. These chiral 0D HMHs exhibit near-unity PLQY and large glum values up to around ±1×10-2 . The achiral guanidine ligand is not only essential to crystallize these hybrid indium-antimony chlorides to achieve near-unity PLQYs, but also greatly enhances the chirality induction from organic ligands to inorganic units in these 0D HMHs. Furthermore, the choice of different chiral ligands can modify the strength of hydrogen bonding interactions in these 0D HMHs, to maximize their glum values. Overall, this study provides a robust way to realize efficient CPL in chiral HMHs, expanding their applications in chiroptical fields.

Tunable Afterglow and Self-Trapped Exciton Emissions in Zr (IV)-Based Organic-Inorganic Metal Halide Hybrids by Metal-Ion Doping

Low-dimensional hybrid metal halide (LDHMH) materials have attracted considerable attention owing to their intriguing optical properties. To the best of the knowledge, this is the first study to successfully demonstrate both self-trap exciton (STE) and afterglow emissions in Zr-based LDHMH materials. The obtained pure (Ph3 S)2 ZrCl6 crystals showed near-ultraviolet phosphorescence and a green afterglow owing to the organic cation Ph3 S+ , while the Bi-doped and Sb-doped crystals exhibited both STE and afterglow emissions. However, the Te-doped crystals showed only a broad yellow STE emission owing to the [TeCl6 ]2- octahedron. In addition, all the crystals showed good stability. Notably, Sb-doped crystals produced white light, which can be adjusted between cold white and warm white using different excitations. Finally, this strategy for both STE and afterglow emissions can be applied to other LDHMH materials for optical applications.

Achieving Tunable Cold/Warm White-Light Emission in a Single Perovskite Material with Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield

Single materials that exhibit efficient and stable white-light emission are highly desirable for lighting applications. This paper reports a novel zero-dimensional perovskite, Rb4CdCl6:Sn2+, Mn2+, which demonstrates exceptional white-light properties including adjustable correlated color temperature, high color rendering index of up to 85, and near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield of 99%. Using a co-doping strategy involving Sn2+ and Mn2+, cyan-orange dual-band emission with complementary spectral ranges is activated by the self-trapped excitons and d-d transitions of the Sn2+ and Mn2+ centers in the Rb4CdCl6 host, respectively. Intriguingly, although Mn2+ ions doped in Rb4CdCl6 are difficult to excite, efficient Mn2+ emission can be realized through an ultra-high-efficient energy transfer between Sn2+ and Mn2+ via the formation of adjacent exchange-coupled Sn-Mn pairs. Benefiting from this efficient Dexter energy transfer process, the dual emission shares the same optimal excitation wavelengths of the Sn2+ centers and suppresses the non-radiative vibration relaxation significantly. Moreover, the relative intensities of the dual-emission components can be modulated flexibly by adjusting the fraction of the Sn2+ ions to the Sn-Mn pairs. This co-doping approach involving short-range energy transfer represents a promising avenue for achieving high-quality white light within a single material.

A High-Rigidity Organic-Inorganic Metal Halide Hybrid Enabling Reversible and Enhanced Self-Trapped Exciton Emission under High Pressure

Zero-dimensional organic-inorganic metal halide hybrids provide ideal bulk-crystal platforms for exploring the pressure engineering of electron-phonon coupling (EPC) and self-trapped exciton (STE) emission at the molecular level. However, the low stiffness of inorganic clusters hinders the reversible tuning of these physical properties. Herein, we designed a Sb3+-doped metal halide with a high emission yield (89.4%) and high bulk modulus (35 GPa) that enables reversible and enhanced STE emission (20-fold) under pressure. The high lattice rigidity originates from the corner-shared cage-structured inorganic tetramers and ring-shaped organic ligands. Further, we reveal that the pressure-enhanced emission regime below 4.5 GPa is owing to the lattice hardening and preferably EPC strength reducing, while the pressure-insensitive emission regime within 4.5-8.5 GPa results from the enhanced intercluster Coulombic attraction force that resists intracluster compression. These results provide insights into the structure-property relation and molecular engineering of zero-dimensional metal halides toward wide-band and pressure-sensitive light sources.

All-Inorganic Lead-Free Doped-Metal Halides for Bright Solid-State Emission from Primary Colors to White Light

Metal halides have been explored with the aid of strong photoluminescence for optical and optoelectronic applications. However, the preparation of lead (Pb)-free solid-state emitters with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and tunable emission remains exceptionally challenging. Herein, we report metal ion (Cu(I), Mn(II), and Sn(II))-doped Cs₃ZnI₅ single crystals that are primary color (violet, green, and orange/red) emitters with extremely high PLQYs. Whereas the Mn-doping leads to bright green emissions with 100% PLQY, the Cu- and Sn-doping give rise to blue and red emissions with PLQYs of 57 and 64%, respectively. Interestingly, higher Mn doping results in white light emissive crystals as a side product, which are found to be Mn-doped CsI single crystals. The bright white light emissive crystals can be synthesized in a pure form in large quantities and exhibit a high color rendering index (CRI) of 78 and CIE coordinates of (0.30, 0.38), which are close to daylight conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of white light emission from a complete inorganic system. Importantly, the single crystals of all colors exhibit high long-term stability as their PLQY remains unchanged even after 2 months of preparation, and are thermally stable up to 600 °C.

Zero-Dimensional Halides with ns2 Electron (Sb3+) Activation to Generate Broad Photoluminescence

Organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have various crystal structures and offer excellent semiconducting properties. Here, we report three novel OIMHs, (PPA)₆InBr₉ (PPA = [C₆H₅(CH₂)₃NH₃]⁺), (PBA)₂SbBr₅, and (PBA)₂SbI₆ (PBA = [C₆H₅(CH₂)₄NH₃]⁺), showing typical zero-dimensional (0D) structure, octahedra dimers, and corner-sharing one-dimensional chains and crystallized in the monoclinic system with P2₁, P2₁/c, and C2/c space groups, respectively. (PPA)₆InBr₉, (PBA)₂SbBr₅, and (PBA)₂SbI₆ have experimental optical band gaps of ∼3.16, ∼2.24, and 1.48 eV, respectively. (PPA)₆InBr₉ exhibits bright-orange light emission centered at 642 nm with a full-width at half-maximum of 179 nm (0.51 eV) and a Stokes shift of 277 nm (1.46 eV). After Sb³⁺ doping, the peak position did not change, and the photoluminescence quantum yield increased significantly from 9.2 to 53.0%. The efficient emission of Sb:(PPA)₆InBr₉ stems from the isolated ns² luminescent center and strong electron-phonon coupling, making the spin-forbidden ³P₁-¹S₀ observable. By combining commercial blue and green phosphors with orange-red-light-emitting (PPA)₆In_0.99Sb_0.01Br₉, a white-light-emitting diode was constructed, with the color-rendering index reaching up to 92.3. Our work highlights three novel 0D OIMHs, with chemical doping of Sb³⁺ shown to significantly enhance the luminescence properties, demonstrating their potential applications in solid-state lighting.

One-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Lead Bromide Hybrids with Excitation-Dependent White-Light Emission Templated by Pyridinium Derivatives

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent tunability and versatility. Here, we have selected pyridinium derivatives with different substituent groups or substitution positions as the organic templating cations and obtained six 1D chain-like structures. They are divided into three types: type I (single chain), type II (double chain), and type III (triple chain), with tunable optical band gaps and emission properties. Among them, only (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ (2,4-LD = 2,4-lutidine) shows an exciton-dependent emission phenomenon, ranging from strong yellow-white to weak red-white light. By comparing its photoluminescence spectrum with that of its bromate (2,4-LD)Br, it is found that the strong yellow-white emission at 534 nm mainly came from the organic component. Furthermore, through a comparison of the fluorescence spectra and lifetimes of (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ and (2-MP)PbBr₃ (2-MP = 2-methylpyridine) with similar structures at different temperatures, we confirm that the tunable emission of (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ comes from different photoluminescent sources corresponding to organic cations and self-trapped excitons. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ has a stronger interaction between organic and inorganic components compared to (2-MP)PbBr₃. This work highlights the importance of organic templating cations in hybrid metal halides and the new functionalities associated with them.

Photophysical studies for Cu(i)-based halides: broad excitation bands and highly efficient single-component warm white-light-emitting diodes

Designing and synthesizing cuprous halide phosphors unifying efficient low-energy emission and a broad excitation band is still a great challenge. Herein, by rational component design, three novel Cu(i)-based metal halides, DPCu₄X₆ [DP = (C₆H₁₀N₂)₄(H₂PO₂)₆; X = Cl, Br, I], were synthesized by reacting p-phenylenediamine with cuprous halide (CuX), and they show similar structures, consisting of isolated [Cu₄X₆]^2- units separated by organic layers. Photophysical studies uncover that the highly localized excitons and rigid environment give rise to highly efficient yellow-orange photoluminescence in all compounds with the excitation band spanning from 240 to 450 nm. The bright PL in DPCu₄X₆ (X = Cl, Br) originates from self-trapped excitons due to the strong electron-phonon coupling. Intriguingly, DPCu₄I₆ features a dual-band emissive characteristic, attributed to the synergistic effect of halide/metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (X/MLCT) and triplet cluster-centered (³CC) excited states. Benefiting from the broadband excitation, a high-performance white-light emitting diode (WLED) with a high color rendering index of 85.1 was achieved using single-component DPCu₄I₆ phosphor. This work not only unveils the role of halogens in the photophysical processes of cuprous halides, but also provides new design principles for high-performance single-component WLEDs.

Regulating the coordination geometry of polyhedra in zero-dimensional metal halides for tunable emission

Although self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions in zero-dimensional metal halides have been intensively investigated, the understanding of the relationship between the coordination geometries of the metal halides and their photophysical properties is still lacking. In this work, we successfully synthesized single crystals, with strong STE emissions, of the bimetallic materials (Bmpip)₉[Pb₃Br₁₁](ZnBr₄)₂ (PbZn-Br) and (Bmpip)₉[Pb₃Br₁₁](MnBr₄)₂ (PbMn-Br), where Bmpip⁺ is 1-butyl-1-methyl-piperidinium (C₁₀H₂₂N⁺), via a facile anti-solvent crystallization strategy. With respect to the monometallic material, (Bmpip)₂[PbBr₄] (Pb-Br), the introduction of Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺ effectively alters the coordination geometry of the lead bromide polyhedral configuration from a PbBr₄^2- tetrahedron to a Pb₃Br₁₁^5- trimer. As a result, the maximum emission peak of PbZn-Br exhibits an obvious red shift and the full width at half maximum is almost two-fold wider than that of Pb-Br due to stronger electron-phonon coupling. Moreover, due to the intrinsic emission of the Mn²⁺ ions, an intriguing tunable emission was achieved in PbMn-Br with an impressively high photoluminescence quantum yield of up to 67%. The ultra-stable PbMn-Br single crystals show potential as an ideal down-conversion phosphor for use in UV-pumped white light-emitting diode devices.

Two-dimensional semiconducting Cu(I)/Sb(III) bimetallic hybrid iodides with a double perovskite structure and photocurrent response

Stable lead-free hybrid halide double perovskites have sparked widespread interest as a new kind of photoelectric material. Herein, for the first time, we successfully incorporated copper(I) and antimony(III) into two two-dimensional (2D) hybrid bimetallic double perovskite iodides, namely (NH₃C₆H₁₁)₄CuSbI₈·H₂O (CuSbI-1) and (NH₃C₆H₁₀NH₃)₂CuSbI₈·0.5H₂O (CuSbI-2), using cyclohexylamine and 1,4-cyclohexanediamine as organic components. The band gaps for CuSbI-1 and CuSbI-2 were determined to be 2.22(2) eV and 2.21(2) eV, respectively. Furthermore, these two layered perovskites were readily dissolved in an organic solvent (1 mL DMF can dissolve 1 g sample for each compound) and could form smooth, pinhole-free, and uniform thin films through a facile spin-coating method. Photocurrent experiments with xenon lamp irradiation revealed the obvious photoelectric responses for both 2D double perovskites. The ratio of the photocurrent to the dark current (I_light/I_dark) for CuSbI-1 and CuSbI-2 is about 23 and 10, respectively, further suggesting their potential to be applied as light harvesters or light detectors. More importantly, these 2D double perovskite iodides show high moisture and thermal stabilities, indicating their potential for optoelectronic applications.

High-Efficiency Intrinsic Yellow-Orange Emission in Hybrid Indium Bromide with Double Octahedral Configuration

Zero-dimensional (0D) In-based organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have received growing interest in recent years as promising luminescent materials. However, the high efficiencies of 0D In-based OIMHs are all dependent on Sb doping in the existing literature. Here, we report a novel 0D In-based OIMH (C₁₀H₂₂N₂)₂In₂Br₁₀, which exhibits intrinsic broadband emission (610 nm), and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) can reach 70% without Sb doping. (C₁₀H₂₂N₂)₂In₂Br₁₀ shows a typical 0D structure with three different In-Br polyhedra (two octahedra and one tetrahedron) separated by large organic cations. Based on the optical property measurements and theoretical calculations, we demonstrate that (C₁₀H₂₂N₂)₂In₂Br₁₀ is an indirect semiconductor with a band gap of 3.74 eV, and the In-Br inorganic moiety is primarily responsible for the intense emission of (C₁₀H₂₂N₂)₂In₂Br₁₀. Interestingly, the unique double octahedral configuration in (C₁₀H₂₂N₂)₂In₂Br₁₀ may enhance the structural distortion and stimulate the self-trapped excitons (STEs), leading to the related high PLQY. Our work provides a novel 0D In-based OIMH with high-efficiency intrinsic emission, which is helpful for understanding the structure-PL relationships of hybrid halides.

Effect of the Host Lattice Environment on the Expression of 5s2 Lone-Pair Electrons in a 0D Bismuth-Based Metal Halide

ns²-Metal halide perovskites have attracted wide attention due to their fascinating photophysical properties. However, achieving high photoluminescence (PL) properties is still an enormous challenge, and the relationship between the lattice environment and ns²-electron expression is still elusive. Herein, an organic-inorganic Bi³⁺-based halide (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O (C₅H₁₄N₂²⁺ = doubly protonated 1-methylpiperazine) with a six-coordinated structure has been successfully prepared, which, however, exhibits inferior PL properties due to the chemically inert expression of Bi³⁺-6s² lone-pair electrons. After reasonably embedding Sb³⁺ with 5s² electrons into the lattice of (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O, the host lattice environment induces the Sb-Cl moiety to change from the original five-coordinated to six-coordinated structure, thereby resulting in a broad-band yellow emission with a PL efficiency up to 50.75%. By utilizing the host lattice of (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O, the expression of Sb³⁺-5s² lone-pair electrons is improved and thus promotes the radiative recombination from the Sb³⁺-³P₁ state, resulting in the enhanced PL efficiency. This work will provide an in-depth insight into the effect of the local structure on the expression of Sb³⁺-5s² lone-pair electrons.

Photo-controllable Luminescence from Radicals Leading to Ratiometric Emission Switching via Dynamic Intermolecular Coupling

The development of photoinduced luminescent radicals with dynamic emission color is still challenging. Herein we report a novel molecular radical system (TBIQ) that shows photo-controllable luminescence, leading to a wide range of ratiometric color changes via light excitation. The conjugated skeleton of TBIQ is decorated with steric-demanding tertiary butyl groups that enable appropriate intermolecular interaction to make dynamic intermolecular coupling possible for controllable behaviors. We reveal that the helicenic pseudo-planar conformation of TBIQ experiences a planarization process after light excitation, leading to more compactly stacked supermolecules and thus generating radicals via intermolecular charge transfer. The photo-controllable luminescent radical system is employed for a high-level information encryption application. This study may offer unique insight into molecular dynamic motion for optical manufacturing and broaden the scope of smart-responsive materials for advanced applications.

Microwave-assisted one-pot multicomponent synthesis of steroidal pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines and their possible implications in drug development

Protein misfolding can lead to fibrillar and non-fibrillar deposits which are the signs of countless human diseases. A promising strategy for the prevention of such diseases is the inhibition of protein aggregation, and the most crucial step toward effective prevention is the development of small molecules having the potential for protein-aggregation inhibition. In this search, a series of novel steroidal pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidines have been synthesized employing steroidal ketone, substituted aldehydes, and 2,6-diaminopyrimidin-4(3H)-one through the microwave-assisted one-pot multicomponent methodology. The aggregation inhibition potential of newly synthesized compounds was evaluated on human lysozyme (HLZ). All the synthesized compounds were found to be efficient in the inhibition of protein aggregation in carefully designed in vitro experiments. Moreover, molecular docking studies also determine the binding interactions between all the synthesized compounds and native HLZ through hydrogen bonding. Synthesis of 1-Aminoisoquinolines and Their Application in a Host-Guest Doped Strategy To Construct Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Materials for Bioimaging

Organic ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted great attention for their wide applications in optoelectronic devices and bioimaging. However, the development of these materials remains a challenging task, partially due to the lack of rational molecular design strategies and unclear luminescence mechanisms. Herein, we present a method for facile access to structurally diverse substituted 1-aminoisoquinoline derivatives through a copper-catalyzed one-pot three-component coupling reaction that provides a promising approach to rapidly assemble a library of 1-aminoisoquinolines for exploring the regularity of the host-guest doped system. A series of host-guest RTP materials with wide-ranging lifetimes from 4.4 to 299.3 ms were constructed by doping various substituted isoquinolines derivatives into benzophenone (BP). Furthermore, 4 r/BP nanoparticles could be used for in-vivo imaging with a signal-to-noise ratio value as high as 32, revealing the potential of the isoquinoline framework for the construction of high-performance RTP materials.

Rational Design of a Super-Alkali Compound with Reversible Photoluminescence

The zero-dimensional (0D) (H₅O₂)(C₄H₁₄N₂S₂)₂BiCl₈: Sb³⁺ single crystal is obtained by the cooling crystallization method. Surprisingly, this compound shows reversible photoluminescence (PL) upon H₅O₂⁺Cl^- removal and insertion. To be specific, the release of H₅O₂⁺Cl^- resulted in red-orange emission with a very low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). While on the reuptake of it, a bright yellow emission with a nearly 10-fold increase of PLQY was observed. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and temperature-dependent PL experiments reveal that significant [SbCl₆]^3- octahedron distortion induced by guest (H₅O₂⁺Cl^-) removal at the ground state, especially at the excited state, is responsible for the disparate PL performance. Encouragingly, we also found that (C₄H₁₄N₂S₂)₂BiCl₇: Sb³⁺ exhibits a fast response (<3 s) to dilute hydrochloric acid with naked-eye perceivable PL color changes, rendering it a potential sensing material for hydrochloric acid.

Factors influencing self-trapped exciton emission of low-dimensional metal halides

In this review, we mainly summarized the structure distortion, molecular engineering, electron–phonon coupling effect, external temperature and pressure, and metal ion doping that influence the self-trapped exciton emission of low-dimensional metal halides (LDMHs).

Highly Efficient and Ultralong Afterglow Emission with Anti-Thermal Quenching from CsCdCl3 : Mn Perovskite Single Crystals

Triplet exciton-based long-lived phosphorescence is severely limited by the thermal quenching at high temperature. Herein, we propose a novel strategy based on the energy transfer from triplet self-trapped excitons to Mn²⁺ dopants in solution-processed perovskite CsCdCl₃ . It is found the Mn²⁺ doped hexagonal phase CsCdCl₃ could simultaneously exhibit high emission efficiency (81.5 %) and long afterglow duration time (150 s). Besides, the afterglow emission exhibits anti-thermal quenching from 300 to 400 K. In-depth charge-carrier dynamics studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculation provide unambiguous evidence that carrier detrapping from trap states (mainly induced by Cl vacancy) to localized emission centers ([MnCl₆ ]^4- ) is responsible for the afterglow emission with anti-thermal quenching. Enlightened by the present results, we demonstrate the application of the developed materials for optical storage and logic operation applications.

Turn-on Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Indium Chlorides by 5s2 Metal Centers

Introducing chirality into the metal-halide hybrids has enabled many emerging properties including chiroptical activity, spin-dependent transport, and ferroelectricity. However, most of the chiral metal-halide hybrids to date are non-emissive, and the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, we show a new strategy to turn on the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in chiral metal-halide hybrids. We demonstrate that alloying Sb³⁺ into chiral indium-chloride hybrids dramatically increases the photoluminescence quantum yield in two new series of chiral indium-antimony chlorides. These materials exhibit strong CPL signals with tunable energy and a high dissymmetry factor up to 1.5×10^-2 . Mechanistic studies reveal that the emission originates from the self-trapped excitons centered in 5s² Sb³⁺ . Moreover, near-ultraviolet pumped white light is demonstrated with a polarization up to 6.0 %. Our work demonstrates new strategies towards highly luminescent chiral metal-halide hybrids.

Ultrasensitive Optical Thermometry via Inhibiting the Energy Transfer in Zero-Dimensional Lead-Free Metal Halide Single Crystals

Self-referencing optical thermometry based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) have drawn extensive attention as a result of their high sensitivity and non-invasively fast response to temperature. However, it is a great challenge for luminescent materials to achieve simultaneously high absolute and relative temperature sensitivity based on the FIR technique. Herein, we developed a novel optical thermometer by designing hybrid lead-free metal halide (TTPhP)₂MnCl₄:Sb³⁺ (TTPhP⁺ = tetraphenylphosphonium cation) single crystals with multimodal photoluminescence (PL). The large TTPhP⁺ organic chain resulted in isolated [MnCl₄]^2- and [SbCl₅]^2- in the single crystal, which leads to a negligible energy trasfer process within them. Therefore, the two PL bands (band 1 from [MnCl₄]^2-) with a peak at 518 nm and band 2 (from [SbCl₅]²) with a peak at 640 nm exhibit different thermal-quenching effects, which resulted in excellent temperature sensitivity, with the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities reaching 0.236 K^-1 and 3.77% K^-1 in a temperature range from 300 to 400 K. Both the absolute and relative sensitivities are among the highest values for luminescence thermometry.

Nanofloating gate modulated synaptic organic light-emitting transistors for reconfigurable displays

The use of postsynaptic current to drive long-lasting luminescence holds a disruptive potential for harnessing the next-generation of smart displays. Multiresponsive long afterglow emission can be achieved by integrating light-emitting polymers in electric spiked transistors trigged by distinct presynaptic signals inputs. Here, we report a highly effective electric spiked long afterglow organic light-emitting transistor (LAOLET), whose operation relies on a nanofloating gate architecture. Long afterglow emission with reconfigurable brightness and retention time is observed upon applying specific positive gate voltage spiked. Conversely, when negative gate voltage stimulus is applied, these LAOLETs function as click-on display. Interestingly, upon endowing the device with force sensing capabilities, it can operate as a long afterglow pressure sensor that emits long-lasting green light subsequently to a controlled extrusion action.

Excitation-dependent perovskite/polymer films for ultraviolet visualization

Ultraviolet (UV) visualization has extensive applications in military and civil fields such as security monitoring, space communication, and wearable equipment for health monitoring in the internet of things (IoT). Due to their remarkable optoelectronic features, perovskite materials are regarded as promising candidates for UV light detecting and imaging. Herein, we report for the first time the excitation-dependent perovskite/polymer films with dynamically tunable fluorescence ranging from green to magenta by changing the UV excitation from 260 to 380 nm. And they still render dynamic multi-color UV light imaging with different polymer matrixes, halogen ratios, and cations of perovskite materials. The mechanism of its fluorescence change is related to the chloride vacancies in perovskite materials. A patterned multi-color ultraviolet visualization pad is also demonstrated for visible conversion of the UV region. This technique may provide a universal strategy for information securities, UV visualizations, and dynamic multi-color displays in the IoT.
