Dynamic network of intermolecular interactions in metal-organic frameworks functionalized by molecular machines

Probing rotaxane dynamics with 19F NMR/MRI: Unveiling the roles of mechanical bond and steric hindrance

BACKGROUND

Deciphering the molecular dynamics (MD) of rotaxanes is crucial for designing and refining their applications in molecular devices. This study employed fluorine-19 nuclear magnetic resonance (19F NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to unveil the interplay between mechanical bonds and steric hindrance in a series of fluorinated rotaxanes.

RESULTS

1H/19F NMR revealed stable "Z"-shaped wheel conformations minimizing steric clashes and favoring π-π interactions with the axle. Utilizing fluorines and axle protons as reporters, 1H/19F relaxation rates and solid-state 19F NMR studies demonstrated that mechanical bond primarily governs wheel motion, while steric hindrance dictates axle movement. Intriguingly, mechanical bond mainly affects local axle groups, leaving distant ones minimally impacted. MD simulations corroborated these findings. Temperature-dependent 19F NMR indicated that energy input enhances rotational motion and wheel conformational transitions. Furthermore, the drastic increase in 19F relaxation rates upon mechanical bond formation and steric hindrance enables sensitive and selective 19F MRI visualization of MD changes.

SIGNIFICANCE

This study, by elucidating the roles of internal and external factors on rotaxane molecular dynamics using 19F NMR/MRI, offers valuable insights that can advance the field of rotaxane-based molecular devices.

Modulating Narrow Bandgap in a Diacetylene Functionalized Woven Covalent Organic Framework as a Visible Light Responsive Photocatalyst

Woven covalent organic frameworks (COF) possess three dimensional frameworks with spatially isolated Cu(I) centers and have promising optoelectronic properties because of metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT). However, despite their potential, woven COFs have not yet been investigated as photocatalysts. In this study, we developed a new woven COF, Cu-PhenBDA-COF, functionalized with diacetylene bonds. Cu-PhenBDA-COF was fully characterized, and the optoelectronic and photocatalytic properties were compared to previously reported Cu-COF-505. The diacetylene bonds of the linker positively impacted the optoelectronic properties of Cu-PhenBDA-COF and resulted in a narrower band gap and better charge separation efficiency. When the Cu(I) center was removed from both woven COFs, the absorption edge was blue shifted, resulting in a wider band gap, and there was a considerable decrease in the charge separation efficiency, underscoring the pivotal role of MLCT. This trend was reflected in the photocatalytic activity of the woven COFs toward the degradation of sulfamethoxazole in water, where the highest reaction rate constant (k app ) was recorded for the metallated diacetylene functionalized woven COF, Cu-PhenBDA-COF.

Substitution and Orientation Effects on the Crystallinity and PFAS Adsorption of Olefin-Linked 2D COFs

Solid phase adsorbents with high removal affinity for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous environments are sought. We report the synthesis and investigation of COF-I, a new covalent organic framework (COF) with a good affinity for PFAS adsorption. COF-I was synthesized by the condensation reaction between 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine and 2,3-dimethoxyterephthaldehyde and fully characterized. In addition to the high crystallinity and surface area, COF-I showed high hydrolytic and thermal stability. Further, we converted its hydrophobic surface to a hydrophilic surface by converting the ortho-methoxy groups to hydroxyl derivatives and produced a new hydrophilic olefin-linked two-dimensional (2D) COF. We experimentally measured the crystallinity of both COFs by X-ray diffraction and used atomistic simulations coupled with cross-polarization/magic angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS ssNMR) to determine the relative amounts of AA-stacking and AB-stacking present. COF-I, with its hydrophobic surface and methoxy groups in the ortho positions, showed the best PFAS adsorption. COF-I reduced the concentration of perfluorooctanoic acid from 20 to 0.069 μg L-1 and to 0.052 μg L-1 for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. These amounts are lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advisory level (0.070 μg L-1). High efficiency, fast kinetic adsorption, and reusability of COF-I are advantages of COF-I for PFAS removal from water.

Theoretical trends in the dynamics simulations of molecular machines across multiple scales

Over the past few decades, molecular machines have been extensively studied, since they are composed of single molecules for functional materials capable of responding to external stimuli, enabling motion at scales ranging from the microscopic to the macroscopic level within molecular aggregates. This advancement holds the potential to efficiently transform external resources into mechanical movement, achieved through precise control of conformational changes in stimuli-responsive materials. However, the underlying mechanism that links microscopic and macroscopic motions remains unclear, demanding computational development associated with simulating the construction of molecular machines from single molecules. This bottleneck has impeded the design of more efficient functional materials. Advancements in theoretical simulations have successfully been developed in various computational models to unveil the operational mechanisms of stimulus-responsive molecular machines, which could help us reduce the costs in experimental trial-and-error procedures. It opens doors to the computer-aided design of innovative functional materials. In this perspective, we have reviewed theoretical approaches employed in simulating dynamic processes involving conformational changes in molecular machines, spanning different scales and environmental conditions. In addition, we have highlighted current challenges and anticipated future trends in the collective control of aggregates within molecular machines. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent theoretical advancements in the field of molecular machines, offering valuable insights for the design of novel smart materials.

Functional dynamics in framework materials

Dynamic crystalline materials have emerged as a unique category of condensed phase matter that combines crystalline lattice with components that display dynamic behavior in the solid state. This has involved a range of materials incorporating dynamic functional units in the form of stimuli-responsive molecular switches and machines, among others. In particular, it has been possible by relying on framework materials, such as porous molecular frameworks and other hybrid organic-inorganic systems that demonstrated potential for serving as scaffolds for dynamic molecular functions. As functional dynamics increase the level of complexity, the associated phenomena are often overlooked and need to be explored. In this perspective, we discuss a selection of recent developments of dynamic solid-state materials across material classes, outlining opportunities and fundamental and methodological challenges for their advancement toward innovative functionality and applications.

Into the dynamics of rotaxanes at atomistic resolution

Mechanically-interlocked molecules (MIMs) are at the basis of artificial molecular machines and are attracting increasing interest for various applications, from catalysis to drug delivery and nanoelectronics. MIMs are composed of mechanically-interconnected molecular sub-parts that can move with respect to each other, imparting these systems innately dynamical behaviors and interesting stimuli-responsive properties. The rational design of MIMs with desired functionalities requires studying their dynamics at sub-molecular resolution and on relevant timescales, which is challenging experimentally and computationally. Here, we combine molecular dynamics and metadynamics simulations to reconstruct the thermodynamics and kinetics of different types of MIMs at atomistic resolution under different conditions. As representative case studies, we use rotaxanes and molecular shuttles substantially differing in structure, architecture, and dynamical behavior. Our computational approach provides results in agreement with the available experimental evidence and a direct demonstration of the critical effect of the solvent on the dynamics of the MIMs. At the same time, our simulations unveil key factors controlling the dynamics of these systems, providing submolecular-level insights into the mechanisms and kinetics of shuttling. Reconstruction of the free-energy profiles from the simulations reveals details of the conformations of macrocycles on the binding site that are difficult to access via routine experiments and precious for understanding the MIMs' behavior, while their decomposition in enthalpic and entropic contributions unveils the mechanisms and key transitions ruling the intermolecular movements between metastable states within them. The computational framework presented herein is flexible and can be used, in principle, to study a variety of mechanically-interlocked systems.

A molecular descriptor of intramolecular noncovalent interaction for regulating optoelectronic properties of organic semiconductors

In recent years, intramolecular noncovalent interaction has become an important means to modulate the optoelectronic performances of organic/polymeric semiconductors. However, it lacks a deep understanding and a direct quantitative relationship among the molecular geometric structure, strength of noncovalent interaction, and optoelectronic properties in organic/polymeric semiconductors. Herein, upon systematical theoretical calculations on 56 molecules with and without noncovalent interactions (X···Y, X = O, S, Se, Te; Y = C, F, O, S, Cl), we reveal the essence of the interactions and the dependence of its strength on the molecular geometry. Importantly, a descriptor S is established as a function of several basic geometric parameters to well characterize the noncovalent interaction energy, which exhibits a good inverse correlation with the reorganization energies of the photo-excited states or electron-pumped charged states in organic/polymeric semiconductors. In particular, the experimental ¹H, ⁷⁷Se, and ¹²⁵Te NMR, the optical absorption and emission spectra, and single crystal structures of eight compounds fully confirm the theoretical predictions. This work provides a simple descriptor to characterize the strength of noncovalent intramolecular interactions, which is significant for molecular design and property prediction.
