Tailoring centripetal metamaterial with superelasticity and negative Poisson's ratio for organic solvents adsorption

A cigarette filter-derived biomimetic cardiac niche for myocardial infarction repair

Cell implantation offers an appealing avenue for heart repair after myocardial infarction (MI). Nevertheless, the implanted cells are subjected to the aberrant myocardial niche, which inhibits cell survival and maturation, posing significant challenges to the ultimate therapeutic outcome. The functional cardiac patches (CPs) have been proved to construct an elastic conductive, antioxidative, and angiogenic microenvironment for rectifying the aberrant microenvironment of the infarcted myocardium. More importantly, inducing implanted cardiomyocytes (CMs) adapted to the anisotropic arrangement of myocardial tissue by bioengineered structural cues within CPs are more conducive to MI repair. Herein, a functional Cig/(TA-Cu) CP served as biomimetic cardiac niche was fabricated based on structural anisotropic cigarette filter by modifying with tannic acid (TA)-chelated Cu2+ (TA-Cu complex) via a green method. This CP possessed microstructural anisotropy, electrical conductivity and mechanical properties similar to natural myocardium, which could promote elongation, orientation, maturation, and functionalization of CMs. Besides, the Cig/(TA-Cu) CP could efficiently scavenge reactive oxygen species, reduce CM apoptosis, ultimately facilitating myocardial electrical integration, promoting vascular regeneration and improving cardiac function. Together, our study introduces a functional CP that integrates multimodal cues to create a biomimetic cardiac niche and provides an effective strategy for cardiac repair.

Preferential ice growth on grooved surface for crisscross-aligned graphene aerogel with large negative Poisson's ratio

Ice formation on solid surfaces is a ubiquitous process in our daily life, and ice orientation plays a critical role in anti-icing/deicing, organ cryo-preservation, and material fabrication. Although previous studies have shown that surface grooves can regulate the orientation of ice crystals, whether the parallel or perpendicular alignment to the grooves is still under debate. Here, we systematically investigate ice formation and its oriented growth on grooved surfaces through both in situ observation and theoretical simulation, and discover a remarkable size effect of the grooves. With the designability of surface groove patterns, the preferential growth of ice crystals is programmed for the fabrication of a crisscross-aligned graphene aerogel with large negative Poisson's ratio. In addition, the size effect provides guidance for the design and fabrication of solid surfaces where the effective control of ice orientation is highly desired, such as efficient deicing, long time organ cryo-preservation, and ice-templated materials.

Multifunctional Hierarchical Metamaterial for Thermal Insulation and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding at Elevated Temperatures

The custom design of lightweight cellular materials is widely concerned due to effectively improved mechanical properties and functional applications. However, the strength attenuation and brittleness behavior hinder honeycomb structure design for the ceramic monolith. Herein, the ceramic matrix composite metamaterial (CCM) with a negative Poisson's ratio and high specific strength, exhibiting superelasticity, stability, and high compressive strength, is customized by combining centripetal freeze-casting and hierarchical structures. CCM maintains a negative Poisson's ratio response under compression with the lowest value reaching -0.16, and the relationship between CCM's specific modulus and density is E ∼ ρ^1.3, which indicates the mechanical metamaterial characteristic of high specific strength. In addition to the extraordinary mechanical performance endowed by hierarchical structures, the CCM exhibits excellent thermal insulation and electromagnetic interference shielding properties, in which the thermal conductivity is 30.62 mW·m^-1·K^-1 and the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiency (SE) reaches 40 dB at room temperature. The specific EMI shielding efficiency divided by thickness (SSE/t) of CCM can reach 9416 dB·cm²·g^-1 at 700 °C due to its stability at elevated temperatures, which is 100 times higher than that of traditional ceramic matrix composites. Moreover, the designed hierarchical structure and metamaterial properties provide a potential scheme to implement cellular materials with collaborative optimization in structure and function.

Investigation on the Compressive Behavior of Hybrid Polyurethane(PU)-Foam-Filled Hyperbolic Chiral Lattice Metamaterial

In this study, a novel hybrid metamaterial has been developed via fulfilling hyperbolic chiral lattice with polyurethane (PU) foam. Initially, both the hyperbolic and typical body-centered cubic (BCC) lattices are fabricated by 3D printing technique. These lattices are infiltrated in a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) solution dissolved in 1,4-Dioxane, and then freeze casting technique is applied to achieve the PU-foam-filling. Intermediate (IM) layers possessing irregular pores, are formed neighboring to the lattice-foam interface. While, the foam far from the lattice exhibits a multi-layered structure. The mechanical behavior of the hybrid lattice metamaterials has been investigated by monotonic and cyclic compressive tests. The experimental monotonic tests indicate that, the filling foam is able to soften the BCC lattice but to stiffen the hyperbolic one, further to raise the stress plateau and to accelerate the densification for both lattices. The foam hybridization also benefits the hyperbolic lattice to prohibit the property degradation under the cyclic compression. Furthermore, the failure modes of the hybrid hyperbolic lattice are identified as the interface splitting and foam collapse via microscopic analysis. Finally, a parametric study has been performed to reveal the effects of different parameters on the compressive properties of the hybrid hyperbolic lattice metamaterial.
