Designing Organic π-Conjugated Molecules for Crystalline Solid Solutions: Adamantane-Substituted Naphthalenes

We showcase herein organic crystalline solid solutions (CSSs) based on the simplest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) scaffold, naphthalene, stabilized by dispersion forces induced by adamantane substitution. High thermal stability of the host and guest molecules synthesized by cross-coupling of dibromonaphthalene derivatives and 4-(1-adamantyl)phenyl boronic ester enabled formation of crystals by sublimation. We could generate binary monocrystalline solid solution systems proven by X-ray crystallography, the first system of designed CSSs stabilized exclusively via dispersion forces with structural evidence. These observations are additionally supported by lattice energy calculations and spectroscopic examinations. For the generation of CSSs, it is of utmost importance that the host and guest molecules have similar lattice energies and spatial compatibility. We anticipate that the thermostable organic CSS design demonstrated herein would be beneficial for functional materials and further investigation towards materials with unique properties.

High-efficiency crystalline white organic light-emitting diodes

Crystalline white organic light-emitting diodes (C-WOLEDs) are promising candidates for lighting and display applications. It is urgently necessary, however, to develop energy-saving and high-efficiency C-WOLEDs that have stable and powerful emission to meet commercial demands. Here, we report a crystalline host matrix (CHM) with embedded nanoaggregates (NA) structure for developing high-performance C-WOLEDs by employing a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) material and orange phosphorescent dopants (Phos.-D). The CHM-TADFNA-D WOLED exhibit a remarkable EQE of 12.8%, which is the highest performance WOLEDs based on crystalline materials. The device has a quick formation of excitons and a well-designed energy transfer process, and possesses a fast ramping of luminance and current density. Compared to recently reported high-performance WOLEDs based on amorphous material route, the C-WOLED achieves a low series-resistance Joule-heat loss ratio and an enhanced photon output, demonstrating its significant potential in developing the next-generation WOLEDs.

Molecular Electronics: From Nanostructure Assembly to Device Integration

Integrated electronics and optoelectronics based on organic semiconductors have attracted considerable interest in displays, photovoltaics, and biosensing owing to their designable electronic properties, solution processability, and flexibility. Miniaturization and integration of devices are growing trends in molecular electronics and optoelectronics for practical applications, which requires large-scale and versatile assembly strategies for patterning organic micro/nano-structures with simultaneously long-range order, pure orientation, and high resolution. Although various integration methods have been developed in past decades, molecular electronics still needs a versatile platform to avoid defects and disorders due to weak intermolecular interactions in organic materials. In this perspective, a roadmap of organic integration technologies in recent three decades is provided to review the history of molecular electronics. First, we highlight the importance of long-range-ordered molecular packing for achieving exotic electronic and photophysical properties. Second, we classify the strategies for large-scale integration of molecular electronics through the control of nucleation and crystallographic orientation, and evaluate them based on factors of resolution, crystallinity, orientation, scalability, and versatility. Third, we discuss the multifunctional devices and integrated circuits based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and photodetectors. Finally, we explore future research directions and outlines the need for further development of molecular electronics, including assembly of doped organic semiconductors and heterostructures, biological interfaces in molecular electronics and integrated organic logics based on complementary FETs.

High Mobility Emissive Excimer Organic Semiconductor Towards Color-Tunable Light-Emitting Transistors

Organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) are highly integrated and minimized optoelectronic devices with significant potential superiority in smart displays and optical communications. To realize these various applications, it is urgently needed for color-tunable emission in OLETs, but remains a great challenge as a result of the difficulty for designing organic semiconductors simultaneously integrating high carrier mobility, strong solid-state emission, and the ability for potential tunable colors. Herein, a high mobility emissive excimer organic semiconductor, 2,7-di(2-anthryl)-9H-fluorene (2,7-DAF) was reasonably designed by introducing a rotatable carbon-carbon single bond connecting two anthracene groups at the 2,7-sites of fluorene, and the small torsion angles simultaneously guarantee effective conjugation and suppress fluorescence quenching. Indeed, the unique stable dimer arrangement and herringbone packing mode of 2,7-DAF single crystal enables its superior integrated optoelectronic properties with high carrier mobility of 2.16 cm2  ⋅ V-1  ⋅ s-1 , and strong excimer emission with absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 47.4 %. Furthermore, the voltage-dependent electrically induced color-tunable emission from orange to blue was also demonstrated for an individual 2,7-DAF single crystal based OLETs for the first time. This work opens the door for a new class of high mobility emissive excimer organic semiconductors, and provides a good platform for the study of color-tunable OLETs.

Lateral epitaxial growth of two-dimensional organic heterostructures

Two-dimensional organic lateral heterostructures (2D OLHs) are attractive for the fabrication of functional materials. However, it is difficult to control the nucleation, growth and orientation of two distinct components. Here we report the combination of two methods-liquid-phase growth and vapour-phase growth-to synthesize 2D OLHs from perylene and a perylenecarboxaldehyde derivative, with a lateral size of ~20 μm and a tunable thickness ranging from 20 to 400 nm. The screw dislocation growth behaviour of the 2D crystals shows the spiral arrangement of atoms within the crystal lattice, which avoids volume expansion and contraction of OLH, thereby minimizing lateral connection defects. Selective control of the nucleation and sequential growth of 2D crystals leads to structural inversion of the 2D OLHs by the vapour-phase growth method. The resulting OLHs show good light-transport capabilities and tunable spatial exciton conversion, useful for photonic applications. This synthetic strategy can be extended to other families of organic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as demonstrated with other pyrene and perylene derivatives.

Crystal Self-Assembly under Confinement: Bridging Nanomaterials to Integrated Devices

ConspectusSelf-assembly, a spontaneous process that organizes disordered constituents into ordered structures, has revolutionized our fundamental understanding of living matter, nanotechnology, and molecular science. From the perspective of nanomaterials, self-assembly serves as a bottom-up method for creating long-range-ordered materials. This is accomplished by tailoring the geometry, chemistry, and interactions of the components, thereby facilitating the efficient fabrication of high-quality materials and high-performance functional devices. Over the past few decades, we have seen controllable organization and diverse phases in self-assembled materials, such as organic crystals, biomolecular structures, and colloidal nanoparticle supercrystals. However, most self-assembled ordered materials and their assembly mechanisms are derived from constituents in a liquid bulk medium, where the effects of boundaries and interfaces are negligible. In the context of nanostructure patterning, self-assembly occurs in confined spaces, with feature sizes ranging from a few to hundreds of nanometers. In such settings, ubiquitous boundaries and interfaces can trap the system in a kinetically favored but metastable state, devoid of long-range order. This makes it extremely difficult to achieve ordered structures in micro/nano-patterning techniques that rely on sessile microdroplets, such as inkjet printing, dip-pen lithography, and contact printing.In stark contrast to sessile droplets, capillary bridges─formed by liquids confined between two solid surfaces─provide unique opportunities for understanding the long-range-ordered self-assembly of crystalline materials under spatial confinement. Because capillary bridges are stabilized by Laplace pressure, which is inversely proportional to the feature size, the confinement and manipulation of solutions or suspensions of functional materials at the nanoscale become accessible through the rational design of surface chemistry and geometry. Although global thermodynamic equilibrium is unattainable in evaporative systems, ordered nucleation and packing of constituent components can be locally realized at the contact line of capillary bridges. This enables the unprecedented fabrication of long-range-ordered micro/nanostructures with deterministic patterns.In this Account, we review the advancements in long-range-ordered self-assembly of crystalline micro/nanostructures under confinement. First, we briefly introduce crystalline materials characterized by strong intramolecular interactions and relatively weak intermolecular forces, analyzing both the opportunities and challenges inherent to self-assembled nanomaterials. Next, we delve into the construction and manipulation of confined liquids, focusing especially on capillary bridges controlled by engineered chemistry and geometry to regulate Laplace pressure. Through this approach, we have achieved capillary bridges with thicknesses on the order of a few nanometers and wafer-scale homogeneity, facilitating the self-assembly of ordered structures. Supported by factors such as local free-volume entropy, electrostatic interactions, curvilinear geometry, directional microfluidics, and nanoconfinement, we have achieved long-range-ordered, deterministic patterning of organic semiconductors, metal-halide perovskites, and colloidal nanocrystal superlattices using this capillary-bridge platform. These long-range microstructures serve as a bridge between nanomaterials and integrated devices, enabling emergent functionalities like intrinsic stretchability, giant photoconductivity, propagating and interacting exciton polaritons, and spin-valley-locked lasing, which are otherwise unattainable in disordered materials. Finally, we discuss potential directions for both the fundamental understanding and practical applications of confined self-assembly.

Synthesis of Organic Optoelectronic Materials Using Direct C-H Functionalization

Small molecules and polymers with conjugated structures can be used as organic optoelectronic materials. These molecules have conventionally been synthesized by cross-coupling reactions; however, in recent years, direct functionalization of C-H bonds has been used to synthesize organic optoelectronic materials. Representative reactions include direct arylation reactions (C-H/C-X couplings, with X being halogen or pseudo-halogen) and cross-dehydrogenative coupling (C-H/C-H cross-coupling) reactions. Although these reactions are convenient for short-step synthesis, they require regioselectivity in the C-H bonds and suppression of undesired homo-coupling side reactions. This review introduces examples of the synthesis of organic optoelectronic materials using two types of direct C-H functionalization reactions. In addition, we summarize our recent activities in the development of direct C-H functionalization reactions using fluorobenzenes as substrates. This review covers the reaction mechanism and material properties of the resulting products.

Photo-Modulated Ionic Polymer as an Adaptable Electron Transport Material for Optically Switchable Pixel-Free Displays

In addition to electrically driven organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays that rely on complicated and costly circuits for switching individual pixel illumination, developing a facile approach that structures pixel-free light-emitting displays with exceptional precision and spatial resolution via external photo-modulation holds significant importance for advancing consumer electronics. Here, optically switchable organic light-emitting pixel-free displays (OSPFDs) are presented and fabricated by judiciously combining an adaptive photosensitive ionic polymer as electron transport materials (ETM) with external photo-modulation as the switching mode while ensuring superior illumination performance and seamless imaging capability. By irradiating the solution-processed OSPFDs with light at specific wavelengths, efficient and reversible tuning of both electron transport and electroluminescence is achieved simultaneously. This remarkable control is achieved by altering the energetic matching within OSPFDs, which also exhibits a high level of universality and adjustable flexibility in the three primary color-based light-emitting displays. Moreover, the ease of creating and erasing desired pixel-free emitting patterns through a non-invasive photopatterning process within a single OSPFD is demonstrated, thereby rendering this approach promising for commercial displaying devices and highly precise pixelated illuminants.

High-Efficiency Area-Emissive White Organic Light-Emitting Transistor for Full-Color Display

The construction of high-performance white organic light-emitting transistor (OLET) with uniform area emission is crucial for smart display technologies but remains greatly challenging. Herein, high-efficiency uniform area-emissive OLETs based on a unique lateral-integrated device configuration which incorporates efficient energy transfer of phosphorescent and fluorescent guests, enabling color-tunable and white emission, are demonstrated. Through precisely regulating the energy transfer between host and guests, high external quantum efficiency of 13.9% for white-emission OLETs is achieved due to the improved high exciton utilization and light outcoupling efficiency which is the highest value reported so far for OLETs and prevents exciton-charge annihilation and electrode photon losses. Moreover, good loop stability is also achieved, along with effective gate tunability and ultralow driving voltage of below 5 V. Finally, a 4 × 6 white-emission OLET array for full-color display is demonstrated for the first time, suggesting its great potential applications for advanced display technologies.

Insight into the effect of side chains on thermal transport of organic semiconductors

Understanding the correlation mechanism of side chains on thermal transport of organic semiconductors is crucial for functionalized organic electronics. In this study, phenyl and alkyl side chains, two representatives of side chain engineering, are chosen to modify dinaphtho-[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT) to synthesize Ph-DNTT and C10-DNTT. The thermal conductivities of the three organic semiconductors exhibit obvious anisotropy, and the corresponding relationships are along-chain > inter-chain > cross-chain. The phenyl side chains enhance the thermal conductivity in the along-chain direction and degrade it in the inter-chain direction, while the alkyl side chains hinder thermal transport. In the cross-chain direction, side chains have a slight effect on thermal transport. The structure orientation consistency between the phenyl side chains and the main chains in Ph-DNTT leads to phonon coupling in the along-chain direction, which improves phonon transport. In the inter-chain direction, the combined effect of the phonon group velocity and phonon participation ratio causes the thermal conductivity degeneracy of Ph-DNTT. For C10-DNTT, the vibrational mismatch between the alkyl side chains and the main chains results in the degradation of thermal transport in the along-chain and inter-chain directions. In the cross-chain direction, the nonbonding interaction dominates the energy transfer in the three organic semiconductors, which induces inferior phonon transport properties and weak effects of side chains.

Four Slip-Stacked Arrangements, Three Types of Photophysics: Crystal Structure and Solid-State Fluorescence of 3,6-Diaryl Substituted Furo[3,4-c]furanone Polymorphs and Regioisomers

Six symmetrical 3,6-diaryl (aryl=phenyl, 2-, 3- and 4-tolyl, 2,4- and 3,5-xylyl) substituted furo[3,4-c]furanones (DFF) were synthesized. The computational analysis, based on density functional theory, found eight possible centrosymmetrical slipped π-stack arrangements, formed according to electron repulsion minimization principle, as for previously reported for π-isoelectronic diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPP). One of these slipped stack arrangements was found to form infinite columns in the crystals of a new polymorph of parent phenyl derivative (with centre-to-centre distance CC=6.975 Å), other three types of stacks were found for 3-tolyl (CC=6.153 Å), 4-tolyl (CC=3.849 Å) and 2,4-xylyl (CC=4.856 Å) derivatives by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. All six derivatives show intense solution fluorescence in blue/green region, with a maximum driven entirely by a number and position of methyl substituents on phenyl rings. On the other hand, the solid-state fluorescence from yellow over orange to red is observed only for four derivatives and its presence/absence, spectral position and vibronic structure is driven exclusively by the slips in π-stacks (with interplanar distance always less than 3.5 Å) of almost planar DFF molecules, resulting in J-type emission, H-type excimer-like emission and H-type quenching.

Achieving Bright Organic Light-Emitting Field-Effect Transistors with Sustained Efficiency through Hybrid Contact Design

Organic light-emitting field-effect transistors (OLEFETs) with bilayer structures have been widely studied due to their potential to integrate high-mobility organic transistors and efficient organic light-emitting diodes. However, these devices face a major challenge of imbalance charge transport, leading to a severe efficiency roll-off at high brightness. Here, we propose a solution to this challenge by introducing a transparent organic/inorganic hybrid contact with specially designed electronic structures. Our design aims to steadily accumulate the electrons injected into the emissive polymer, allowing the light-emitting interface to effectively capture more holes even when the hole current increases. Our numerical simulations show that the capture efficiency of these steady electrons will dominate charge recombination and lead to a sustained external quantum efficiency of 0.23% over 3 orders of magnitude of brightness (4 to 7700 cd/m²) and current density (1.2 to 2700 mA/cm²) from -4 to -100 V. The same enhancement is retained even after increasing the external quantum efficiency (EQE) to 0.51%. The high and tunable brightness with stable efficiency offered by hybrid-contact OLEFETs makes them ideal light-emitting devices for various applications. These devices have the potential to revolutionize the field of organic electronics by overcoming the fundamental challenge of imbalance charge transport.

A new dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene derivative for high performance single crystal organic field-effect transistors and UV-sensitive phototransistors

Organic phototransistors (OPTs), as the basic unit for organic image sensors, are emerging as one of the most promising light signal detectors. High performance UV-sensitive phototransistors are highly desired for the detection of UV light. Herein, by introducing the anthracene group to the 2,6-positions of dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene, we designed and synthesized a new dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene derivative, 2,6-di(anthracen-2-yl)dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene (2,6-DADTT). The single crystal structure of 2,6-DADTT presents classical herringbone packing with multiple intermolecular interactions, including S⋯S (3.470 Å), S⋯C (3.304 Å, 3.391 Å, 3.394 Å) and C-H⋯π (2.763 Å, 2.822 Å, 2.846 Å, 2.865 Å, 2.885 Å, 2.890 Å) contacts. Single crystal organic field-effect transistors (SC-OFETs) based on 2,6-DADTT reach a highest mobility of 1.26 cm2 V-1 s-1 and an average mobility of 0.706 cm2 V-1 s-1. 2,6-DADTT-based single crystal organic phototransistors (OPTs) demonstrate photosensitivity (P) of 2.49 × 106, photoresponsivity (R) of 6.84 × 103 A W-1 and ultrahigh detectivity (D*) of 4.70 × 1016 Jones to UV light, which are among the best figures of merit for UV-sensitive OPTs. These excellent comprehensive performances indicate its good application prospects in integrated optoelectronics.

Harvesting Triplet Excitons in High Mobility Emissive Organic Semiconductor for Efficiency Enhancement of Light-Emitting Transistors

Organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), a kind of highly integrated and minimized optoelectronic device, demonstrate great potential applications in various fields. The construction of high-performance OLETs requires the integration of high charge carrier mobility, strong emission, and high triplet exciton utilization efficiency in the active layer. However, it remains a significant long-term challenge, especially for single component active layer OLETs. Herein, the successful harvesting of triplet excitons in a high mobility emissive molecule, 2,6-diphenylanthracene (DPA), through the triplet-triplet annihilation process is demonstrated. By incorporating a highly emissive guest into the DPA host system, an obvious increase in photoluminescence efficiency along with exciton utilization efficiency results in an obvious enhancement of external quantum efficiency of 7.2 times for OLETs compared to the non-doped devices. Moreover, well-tunable multi-color electroluminescence, especially white emission with Commission Internationale del'Eclairage  of (0.31, 0.35), from OLETs is also achieved by modulating the doping concentration with a controlled energy transfer process. This work opens a new avenue for integrating strong emission and efficient exciton utilization in high-mobility organic semiconductors for high-performance OLETs and advancing their related functional device applications.

Recent advances in n-type and ambipolar organic semiconductors and their multi-functional applications

Organic semiconductors have received broad attention and research interest due to their unique integration of semiconducting properties with structural tunability, intrinsic flexibiltiy and low cost. In order to meet the requirements of organic electronic devices and their integrated circuits, p-type, n-type and ambipolar organic semiconductors are all necessary. However, due to the limitation in both material synthesis and device fabrication, the development of n-type and ambipolar materials is quite behind that of p-type materials. Recent development in synthetic methods of organic semiconductors greatly enriches the range of n-type and ambipolar materials. Moreover, the newly developed materials with multiple functions also put forward multi-functional device applications, including some emerging research areas. In this review, we give a timely summary on these impressive advances in n-type and ambipolar organic semiconductors with a special focus on their synthesis methods and advanced materials with enhanced properties of charge carrier mobility, integration of high mobility and strong emission and thermoelectric properties. Finally, multi-functional device applications are further demonstrated as an example of these developed n-type and ambipolar materials.

Facile Synthesis of Bis-pentafluoroarylated Anthracene Derivatives for N-type Organic-Field-Effect Transistor Applications

Diphenylanthracene (DPA) and its derivatives are promising semiconducting materials for p-type organic-field-effect transistors (OFETs). In this study, to develop n-type semiconducting materials with an anthracene core, pentafluorobenzene was introduced into anthracene by C-H direct arylation, enabling the synthesis of various bis(pentafluorophenyl)anthracene (DPA-F) derivatives. The high reactivity of the pentafluorobenzene C-H bond allows direct arylation for synthesizing DPA-F derivatives in a single step. The introduction of strong electron-withdrawing pentafluorophenyl groups provides the anthracene derivatives with n-type semiconducting properties, in contrast to the p-type properties of the parent DPAs. Among the synthesized compounds, 2,6-bis(pentafluorophenyl)anthracene shows a high electron mobility of 0.12±0.02 cm² /Vs and an on/off ratio>10⁶ in OFETs. The high crystallinity results in the smooth electron transport. This study provides a facile synthetic method for n-type semiconducting materials and insights into the molecular design of the positional effects of aromatic substituents on anthracene.

Low-Dimensional Organic Crystals: From Precise Synthesis to Advanced Applications

Low-dimensional organic crystals (LOCs) have attracted increasing attention recently for their potential applications in miniaturized optoelectronics and integrated photonics. Such applications are possible owing to their tunable physicochemical properties and excellent charge/photon transport features. As a result, the precise synthesis of LOCs has been examined in terms of morphology modulation, large-area pattern arrays, and complex architectures, and this has led to a series of appealing structure-dependent properties for future optoelectronic applications. This review summarizes the recent advances in the precise synthesis of LOCs in addition to discussing their structure-property relationships in the context of optoelectronic applications. It also presents the current challenges related to organic crystals with specific structures and desired performances, and the outlook regarding their use in next-generation integrated optoelectronic applications.
