Graphoepitaxy of self-assembled block copolymers on two-dimensional periodic patterned templates

Sequential Self-Assembly of Polystyrene-block-Polydimethylsiloxane for 3D Nanopatterning via Solvent Annealing

This study aims to develop a strategy for the fabrication of multilayer nanopatterns through sequential self-assembly of lamella-forming polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) block copolymer (BCP) from solvent annealing. By simply tuning the solvent selectivity, a variety of self-assembled BCP thin-film morphologies, including hexagonal perforated lamellae (HPL), parallel cylinders, and spheres, can be obtained from single-composition PS-b-PDMS. By taking advantage of reactive ion etching (RIE), topographic SiO2 monoliths with well-ordered arrays of hexagonally packed holes, parallel lines, and hexagonally packed dots can be formed. Subsequently, hole-on-dot and line-on-hole hierarchical textures can be created through a layer-by-layer process with RIE treatment as evidenced experimentally and confirmed theoretically. The results demonstrated the feasibility of creating three-dimensional (3D) nanopatterning from the sequential self-assembly of single-composition PS-b-PDMS via solvent annealing, providing an appealing process for nano-MEMS manufacturing based on BCP lithography.

Directed Self-Assembly by Sparsely Prepatterned Substrates with Self-Responsive Polymer Brushes

The guiding pattern in the chemoepitaxially directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers is often fabricated by periodically functionalizing homogeneously random copolymer brushes tethered on a substrate. The prepatterned copolymer brushes constitute a soft penetrable surface, and their two components can in principle locally segregate in response to the overlying self-assembly process of block copolymers. To reveal how the self-responsive behavior of the copolymer brushes affects the directing effect, we develop a dissipative particle dynamics model to explicitly include the prepatterned polymer brushes and implement it to simulate the DSA of a cylinder-forming diblock copolymer melt on the sparse pattern of polymer brushes. Through large-scale dynamic simulations, we identify the windows of the content of the random copolymer, the film thickness, and the diameter of the patterned spot, for the formation of perfectly ordered hexagonal patterns composed of perpendicular cylinders. Our dynamic simulations reveal that the random copolymer brushes grafted on the unpatterned area exhibit a remarkable self-responsive ability with respect to the self-assembly of the diblock copolymers overlying them, which may widen the effective window of the content of the random copolymer. Within the processing windows of these key parameters, defect-free patterns are successfully achieved both in simulations and in experiments with sizes as large as a few micrometers for 4-fold density multiplications. This work demonstrates that highly efficient computer simulations based on an effective model can provide helpful guidance for experiments to optimize the critical parameters and even may promote the application of DSA.

Directed Self-Assembly of Polystyrene-Block-Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Monolayer by Nano-Trench for Nanopatterning

This work pioneers to combine fast self-assembly of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) nanocage-based giant surfactants with high etching contrast and directed self-assembly for reliable long-range lateral order to create well-aligned sub-10 nm line nanopatterns via reactive ion etching (RIE). Polystyrene-block-oligo(dimethylsiloxane) substituted POSS (PS-b-oDMS7POSS) with seven oligo(dimethylsiloxane) at the corners of the POSS nanocage and one polystyrene (PS) tail is designed and synthesized as a giant surfactant with self-assembly behaviors like block copolymer (BCP). In contrast to BCP, oDMS7POSS gives a volume-persistent "nanoatom" particle with higher mobility for fast self-assembly and higher segregation strength with PS for smaller feature size. By taking advantage of directed self-assembly using nano-trench fabricated by electron beam lithography, well-ordered nanostructured monolayer with well-aligned parallel oDMS7POSS cylinders can be formed by confined self-assembly within the nano-trench. With the optimization of the RIE treatment using O2 as an etchant, the high etching contrast from the oDMS7POSS and PS gives the formation of well-defined line nanopatterns with sub-10 nm critical dimension that can serve as a mask for pattern transfer in lithography. These results demonstrate a cost-effective approach for nanopatterning by utilizing a creatively designed giant surfactant with sub-10 nm feature size and excellent etching contrast for modern lithographic applications.

Effect of Particle-Substrate Interactions on Colloidal Layer Structure Prepared by Convective Self-Assembly Using Polyelectrolyte-Grafted Silica Particles

Cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes, poly(vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride) (PVBTA) and poly(sodium styrene sulfate) (PSSS), were grafted on the surface of the silica particles, respectively, and then these two types of polyelectrolyte-grafted silica particles were applied to the colloidal layer preparation by convective self-assembly (CSA) using hydrophilic or hydrophobic glass substrates to investigate the effect of the interactions between the particles and the substrate surface on the resultant layer structures. When the PVBTA-grafted silica particle (PVBTA-Si) was used, the colloidal monolayers with a non-close-packed (NCP) structure were formed on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic glass substrates, where the NCP colloidal layers on the hydrophobic glass substrate have a somewhat more ordered structure than those on the hydrophilic glass substrate. In the case of the PSSS-grafted silica particle (PSSS-Si), on the other hand, stripe patterns with close-packed (CP) colloidal layers were obtained on both types of the glass substrates. The number of layers of the stripes on the hydrophilic glass substrate was less than that on the hydrophobic glass substrate, while the spacing and width of the stripes on both substrates were similar to each other. The difference in the structures of the colloidal layers obtained here indicates that an attractive interaction, such as an electrostatic attraction and a hydrophobic interaction, between the particle and the substrate surface is necessary to achieve the NCP structure by the CSA process using polyelectrolyte-grafted silica particles.

Epitaxy-Directed Self-Assembly of Copolymers and Polymer Blends

Directed self-assembly of materials into patterned structures is of great importance since the performance of them depends remarkably on their multiscale hierarchical structures. Therefore, purposeful structural regulation at different length scales through crystallization engineering provides an opportunity to modify the properties of polymeric materials. Here, an epitaxy-directed self-assembly strategy for regulating the pattern structures including phase structure as well as crystal modification and orientation of each component for both copolymers and polymer blends is reported. Owing to the specific crystallography registration between the depositing crystalline polymers and the underlying crystalline substrate, not only order phase structure with controlled size at nanometer scale but also the crystal structure and chain orientation of each component within the separated phases for both copolymers and polymer blend systems can be precisely regulated.

Illuminating Recent Progress in Nanotransfer Printing: Core Principles, Emerging Applications, and Future Perspectives

As the demand for diverse nanostructures in physical/chemical devices continues to rise, the development of nanotransfer printing (nTP) technology is receiving significant attention due to its exceptional throughput and ease of use. Over the past decade, researchers have attempted to enhance the diversity of materials and substrates used in transfer processes as well as to improve the resolution, reliability, and scalability of nTP. Recent research on nTP has made continuous progress, particularly using the control of the interfacial adhesion force between the donor mold, target material, and receiver substrate, and numerous practical nTP methods with niche applications have been demonstrated. This review article offers a comprehensive analysis of the chronological advancements in nTP technology and categorizes recent strategies targeted for high-yield and versatile printing based on controlling the relative adhesion force depending on interfacial layers. In detail, the advantages and challenges of various nTP approaches are discussed based on their working mechanisms, and several promising solutions to improve morphological/material diversity are presented. Furthermore, this review provides a summary of potential applications of nanostructured devices, along with perspectives on the outlook and remaining challenges, which are expected to facilitate the continued progress of nTP technology and to inspire future innovations.

Roll-to-plate 0.1-second shear-rolling process at elevated temperature for highly aligned nanopatterns

The shear-rolling process is a promising directed self-assembly method that can produce high-quality sub-10 nm block copolymer line-space patterns cost-effectively and straightforwardly over a large area. This study presents a high temperature (280 °C) and rapid (~0.1 s) shear-rolling process that can achieve a high degree of orientation in a single process while effectively preventing film delamination, that can be applied to large-area continuous processes. By minimizing adhesion, normal forces, and ultimate shear strain of the polydimethylsiloxane pad, shearing was successfully performed without peeling up to 280 °C at which the chain mobility significantly increases. This method can be utilized for various high-χ block copolymers and surface neutralization processes. It enables the creation of block copolymer patterns with a half-pitch as small as 8 nm in a unidirectional way. Moreover, the 0.1-second rapid shear-rolling was successfully performed on long, 3-inch width polyimide flexible films to validate its potential for the roll-to-roll process.

On-surface synthesis of ballbot-type N-heterocyclic carbene polymers

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are established ligands for metal complexes and surfaces. Here we go beyond monomeric NHCs and report on the synthesis of NHC polymers on gold surfaces, consisting of ballbot-type repeating units bound to single Au adatoms. We designed, synthesized and deposited precursors containing different halogens on gold surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum. Conformational, electronic and charge transport properties were assessed by combining low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, non-contact atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, first-principles calculations and reactive force field simulations. The confirmed ballbot-type nature of the NHCs explains the high surface mobility of the incommensurate NHC polymers, which is prerequisite for their desired spatial alignment. The delicate balance between mobility and polymerization rate allows essential parameters for controlling polymer directionality to be derived. These polymers open up new opportunities in the fields of nanoelectronics, surface functionalization and catalysis.

Surface enrichment dictates block copolymer orientation

Orientation of block copolymer (BCP) morphology in thin films is critical to applications as nanostructured coatings. Despite being well-studied, the ability to control BCP orientation across all possible block constituents remains challenging. Here, we deploy coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study diblock copolymer ordering in thin films, focusing on chain makeup, substrate surface energy, and surface tension disparity between the two constituent blocks. We explore the multi-dimensional parameter space of ordering using a machine-learning approach, where an autonomous loop using a Gaussian process (GP) control algorithm iteratively selects high-value simulations to compute. The GP kernel was engineered to capture known symmetries. The trained GP model serves as both a complete map of system response, and a robust means of extracting material knowledge. We demonstrate that the vertical orientation of BCP phases depends on several counter-balancing energetic contributions, including entropic and enthalpic material enrichment at interfaces, distortion of morphological objects through the film depth, and of course interfacial energies. BCP lamellae are found more resistant to these effects, and thus more robustly form vertical orientations across a broad range of conditions; while BCP cylinders are found to be highly sensitive to surface tension disparity.

Non-Bulk Morphologies of Extremely Thin Block Copolymer Films Cast on Topographically Defined Substrates Featuring Deep Trenches: The Importance of Lateral Confinement

Directed self-assembly of block copolymers is evolving toward applications that are more defect-tolerant but still require high morphological control and could benefit from simple, inexpensive fabrication processes. Previously, we demonstrated that simply casting ultra-thin block copolymer films on topographically defined substrates leads to hierarchical structures with dual patterns in a controlled manner and unraveled the dependence of the local morphology on the topographic feature dimensions. In this article, we discuss the extreme of the ultraconfined thickness regime at the border of film dewetting. Additional non-bulk morphologies are observed at this extreme, which further elaborate the arsenal of dual patterns that could be obtained in coexistence with full placement control. It is shown that as the thickness confinement approaches its limit, lateral confinement imposed by the width of the plateaus becomes a critical factor influencing the local morphology.

Dewetting-Induced Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers Templated by Colloidal Crystals

Recent advances in high-performance flexible electronic devices have increased the demand for more diverse and complex nanofabrication methods; high-resolution, high-efficiency, and low-cost patterning strategies for next-generation devices are therefore required. In this study, we demonstrate the formation of dewetting-induced hierarchical patterns using two self-assembled materials: block copolymers (BCPs) and colloidal crystals. The combination of the two self-assembly methods successfully generates multiscale hierarchical patterns because the length scales of the periodic colloidal crystal structures are suitable for templating the BCP patterns. Various concentric ring patterns were observed on the templated BCP films, and a free energy model of the polymer chain was applied to explain the formation of these patterns relative to the template width. Frequently occurring spiral-defective features were also examined and found to be promoted by Y-junction defects.

The Promise of Soft-Matter-Enabled Quantum Materials

The field of quantum materials has experienced rapid growth over the past decade, driven by exciting new discoveries with immense transformative potential. Traditional synthetic methods to quantum materials have, however, limited the exploration of architectural control beyond the atomic scale. By contrast, soft matter self-assembly can be used to tailor material structure over a large range of length scales, with a vast array of possible form factors, promising emerging quantum material properties at the mesoscale. This review explores opportunities for soft matter science to impact the synthesis of quantum materials with advanced properties. Existing work at the interface of these two fields is highlighted, and perspectives are provided on possible future directions by discussing the potential benefits and challenges which can arise from their bridging.

Well-Ordered Nanonetwork Metamaterials from Block Copolymer Templated Syntheses

ConspectusThrough the morphological evolution to give highly optimized complex architectures at different length scales, fine-tuned textures for specific functions in living organisms can be achieved in nature such as a bone core with very complicated porous architecture to attain a significant structural efficiency attributed to delicately structured ligaments and density gradients. As inspired by nature, materials with periodic network structures (i.e., well-defined porous textures) in the nanoscale are appealing and promising for innovative properties. Biomimicking from nature, organic and/or inorganic nanonetworks can be synthetically fabricated, giving broadness and effectiveness when tuning the desired properties. Metamaterials are materials whose effective properties do not result from the bulk behavior of the constituent materials but rather mainly from their deliberate structuring. The performances of fabricating metamaterials will depend on the control of size, shape, order, and orientation of the forming textures. One of the appealing textures for the deliberate structuring is network architecture. Network materials possess self-supporting frameworks, open-cell character, high porosity, and large specific surface area, giving specific functions and complexity for diverse applications. As demonstrated by recent studies, exceptional mechanical performances such as negative thermal expansion, negative Poisson's ratio, and twisting under uniaxial forces can be achieved by the effect of the deliberate structuring with nanonetwork textures. In contrast to a top-down approach, a bottom-up approach is cost-effective, and also it can overcome the size limitation to reach nanoscale fabrication. It can be foreseen that network metamaterials with a feature size of tens of nanometers (referred as nanonetwork metamaterials) may provide new comprehension of the structure and property relationships for various materials. The self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) is one of the most used methods to build up well-ordered nanostructured phases from a bottom-up approach with precise control of size, shape, and orientation in the thin films for realistic applications. In this account, we summarize recent advancements in the fabrication of nanohybrids and nanoporous materials with well-ordered nanonetwork textures even with controlled helicity by combining block copolymer self-assembly and templated syntheses for mechanical and optical applications with superior properties beyond nature as metamaterials as well as chiral metamaterials with new properties for chiroptic applications such as chiral plasmonics, beam splitter, and negative refraction. The description of the fundamental facets of a nonconventional structure-property relationship with the characters of metamaterials and the state-of-the-art methodologies to fabricate nanonetworks using block copolymer self-assembly will stimulate research activities for the development of nanonetwork metamaterials with exceptional individual and multifunctional properties for futuristic devices.

Fabrication of Dimensional and Structural Controlled Open Pore, Mesoporous Silica Topographies on a Substrate

Open pore mesoporous silica (MPS) thin films and channels were prepared on a substrate surface. The pore dimension, thickness and ordering of the MPS thin films were controlled by using different concentrations of the precursor and molecular weight of the pluronics. Spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were utilized to determine the alignment and ordering of the pores. Further, MPS channels on a substrate surface were fabricated using commercial available lithographic etch masks followed by an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etch. Attempts were made to shrink the channel dimension by using a block copolymer (BCP) hard mask methodology. In this regard, polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) block copolymer (BCP) thin film forming perpendicularly oriented PEO cylinders in a PS matrix after microphase separation through solvent annealing was used as a structural template. An insitu hard mask methodology was applied which selectively incorporate the metal ions into the PEO microdomains followed by UV/Ozone treatment to generate the iron oxide hard mask nanopatterns. The aspect ratio of the MPS nanochannels can be varied by altering etching time without altering their shape. The MPS nanochannels exhibited good coverage across the entire substrate and allowed direct access to the pore structures.

Dual Block Copolymer Morphologies in Ultrathin Films on Topographic Substrates: The Effect of Film Curvature

The ability to create mixed morphologies using easily controlled parameters is crucial for the integration of block copolymers in advanced technologies. We have previously shown that casting an ultrathin block copolymer film on a topographically patterned substrate results in different deposited thicknesses on the plateaus and in the trenches, which leads to the co-existence of two patterns. In this work, we highlight the dependence of the dual patterns on the film profile. We suggest that the steepness of the film profile formed across the plateau edge affects the nucleation of microphase-separated domains near the plateau edges, which influences the morphology that develops on the plateau regions. An analysis of the local film thicknesses in multiple samples exhibiting various combinations of plateau and trench widths for different trench depths enabled the construction of phase diagrams, which unraveled the intricate dependence of the formed patterns not only on the curvature of the film profile but also on the fraction of the film that resides in the trenches. Our analysis facilitates the prediction of the patterns that would develop in the trenches and on the plateaus for a given block copolymer film of known thickness from the dimensions of the topographic features.

Solvent-assisted self-assembly of block copolymer thin films

Solvent-assisted block copolymer self-assembly is a compelling method for processing and advancing practical applications of these materials due to the exceptional level of the control of BCP morphology and significant acceleration of ordering kinetics. Despite substantial experimental and theoretical efforts devoted to understanding of solvent-assisted BCP film ordering, the development of a universal BCP patterning protocol remains elusive; possibly due to a multitude of factors which dictate the self-assembly scenario. The aim of this review is to aggregate both seminal reports and the latest progress in solvent-assisted directed self-assembly and to provide the reader with theoretical background, including the outline of BCP ordering thermodynamics and kinetics phenomena. We also indicate significant BCP research areas and emerging high-tech applications where solvent-assisted processing might play a dominant role.

Vitrimers: Using Dynamic Associative Bonds to Control Viscoelasticity, Assembly, and Functionality in Polymer Networks

Vitrimers have been investigated in the past decade for their promise as recyclable, reprocessable, and self-healing materials. In this Viewpoint, we focus on some of the key open questions that remain regarding how the molecular-scale chemistry impacts macroscopic physical chemistry. The ability to design temperature-dependent complex viscoelastic spectra with independent control of viscosity and modulus based on knowledge of the dynamic bond and polymer chemistry is first discussed. Next, the role of dynamic covalent chemistry on self-assembly is highlighted in the context of crystallization and nanophase separation. Finally, the ability of dynamic bond exchange to manipulate molecular transport and viscoelasticity is discussed in the context of various applications. Future directions leveraging dynamic covalent chemistry to provide insights regarding fundamental polymer physics as well as imparting functionality into polymers are discussed in all three of these highlighted areas.

A Single Crystal 2D Hexagonal Array in a Centimeter Scale with a Self-Directed Assembly of Diblock Copolymer Spheres

The creation of a single-grain two-dimensional (2D) nanoarray over a large area (∼1 cm²) has been only realized with expensive lithographic fabrication involving a complicated multichemical process. In this work, we report the production of a highly aligned single-grain 2D crystalline nanoarray over a centimeter-scale large area with a concept of self-directed assembly (SDA) in block copolymer (BCP) thin films. No lithographic guiding pattern is employed in SDA. A sphere-forming BCP is first transformed to transient-cylinders and aligned with shear. The aligned cylinders act as a guiding pattern to restore the sphere-morphology producing a single-grain 2D crystalline array with the following solvent vapor annealing. The SDA process has two governing parameters: orientational order of guiding patterns in the first step and the lattice matching between the transient guiding cylinders and the restored spheres. The successful application of SDA yields a single-grain of 2D crystalline hexagonal nanoarray with an exceptional long-range order, which is confirmed by employing image treating algorithms and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) measurements. The suggested SDA strategy is found to be effective for large-scale nanopatterning with no lithographic tools.

Soft-Shear-Aligned Vertically Oriented Lamellar Block Copolymers for Template-Free Sub-10 nm Patterning and Hybrid Nanostructures

The template-free unidirectional alignment of lamellar block copolymers (l-BCPs) for sub-10 nm high-resolution patterning and hybrid multicomponent nanostructures is important for technological applications. We demonstrate a modified soft-shear-directed self-assembly (SDSA) approach for aligning pristine l-BCPs and l-BCPs with incorporated polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs), as well as the l-BCP conversion to aligned gold nanowires, and hybrid of metallic gold nanowire and dielectric silica nanoparticle in the form of line-dot nanostructures. The smallest patterns have a half-pitch as small as 9.8 nm. In all cases, soft-shear is achieved using a high-molecular-mass polymer topcoat layer, with support on a neutral bottom layer. We also show that the hybrid line-dot nanostructures have a red-shifted plasmonic response in comparison to neat gold nanowires. These template-free aligned BCPs and nanowires have potential use in nanopatterning applications, and the line-dot nanostructures should be useful in the sensing of biomolecules and other molecular species based on the plasmonic response of the nanowires.

Transient Laser-Annealing-Induced Mesophase Transitions of Block Copolymer-Resol Thin Films

Block copolymer self-assembly-derived thin films provide direct access to two- and three-dimensional periodically ordered mesostructures as enablers for many nanotechnology applications. This report describes laser-annealing-induced disorder-order mesophase transitions of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide)/resol hybrid thin films over a range of laser temperatures (∼45 to 525 °C) and short dwell times (0.25 to 100 ms), revealing the non-equilibrium ordering and disordering kinetics and behaviors. We found that a combination of transient laser temperature of ∼275 °C and annealing dwell time of 100 ms provided the most optimal kinetic and thermodynamic control of the diffusivities of hybrid mesophases and photothermal-induced resol polymerization, yielding long-range ordered films resembling an in-plane body-centered cubic sphere morphology. A clear understanding of hybrid thin film mesophase self-assembly under non-equilibrium laser annealing could open new avenues to introduce novel chemistries and rapidly achieve nanoscale periodic order suitable for the patterning of complex structures, electronics, sensing, and emerging quantum materials.

Selective Deposition of Copper on Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Surfaces via Physical Vapor Deposition

Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly produces chemically and topographically patterned surfaces which are used to guide the formation of Cu nanostructures by exploiting differences in the mobility of vapor-deposited species on each microdomain. Cu metal films a few nm thick were deposited on three different BCP surfaces self-assembled from poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) and polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP). For PS-b-PMMA, the effects of chemical heterogeneity dominate over the effects of the 2 nm peak-to-valley topography, and sputtered Cu preferentially wets the PS block. PS-b-P2VP has greater chemical and topographical contrast and shows a wider process window for selective deposition. Cu grown by evaporation has less surface mobility, and shadowing effects are believed to dominate pattern formation. The hierarchical self-assembly process of thin metal films on BCP surfaces provides a route to fabricating heterogeneous metallic nanostructures.

Chemical Composition and Strain at Interfaces between Different Morphologies in Block Copolymer Thin Films

Transitional composition between two thin-film morphologies of the block copolymer, polystyrene-block-poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PS-b-PtBuA), was investigated using near-field infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy mechanical measurements. These techniques allowed block identification with nanoscale spatial resolution and elucidated the material's sub-surface composition. PS was found to form coronae around the PtBuA block in spherical valleys on flat areas of the film, and coronae of PtBuA surrounding the PS lamellae were observed at the edge of the polymer film, where parallel lamellae are formed. Furthermore, we found that the peak position and width varied by location, which may be a result of block composition, chain tension, or substrate interaction.

Two-dimensional biomaterials: material science, biological effect and biomedical engineering applications

To date, nanotechnology has increasingly been identified as a promising and efficient means to address a number of challenges associated with public health. In the past decade, two-dimensional (2D) biomaterials, as a unique nanoplatform with planar topology, have attracted explosive interest in various fields such as biomedicine due to their unique morphology, physicochemical properties and biological effect. Motivated by the progress of graphene in biomedicine, dozens of types of ultrathin 2D biomaterials have found versatile bio-applications, including biosensing, biomedical imaging, delivery of therapeutic agents, cancer theranostics, tissue engineering, as well as others. The effective utilization of 2D biomaterials stems from the in-depth knowledge of structure-property-bioactivity-biosafety-application-performance relationships. A comprehensive summary of 2D biomaterials for biomedicine is still lacking. In this comprehensive review, we aim to concentrate on the state-of-the-art 2D biomaterials with a particular focus on their versatile biomedical applications. In particular, we discuss the design, fabrication and functionalization of 2D biomaterials used for diverse biomedical applications based on the up-to-date progress. Furthermore, the interactions between 2D biomaterials and biological systems on the spatial-temporal scale are highlighted, which will deepen the understanding of the underlying action mechanism of 2D biomaterials aiding their design with improved functionalities. Finally, taking the bench-to-bedside as a focus, we conclude this review by proposing the current crucial issues/challenges and presenting the future development directions to advance the clinical translation of these emerging 2D biomaterials.

Self-Aligned Assembly of a Poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-Polystyrene-b-Poly(2-vinylpyridine) Triblock Copolymer on Graphene Nanoribbons

Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers is one of the most promising patterning techniques for patterning sub-10 nm features. However, at such small feature sizes, it is becoming increasingly difficult to fabricate the guiding pattern for the DSA process, and it is necessary to explore alternative guiding methods for DSA to achieve long-range ordered alignment. Here, we report the self-aligned assembly of a triblock copolymer, poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP-b-PS-b-P2VP) on neutral graphene nanoribbons with the gap consisting of a P2VP-preferential silicon oxide (SiO₂) substrate via solvent vapor annealing. The assembled P2VP-b-PS-b-P2VP demonstrated long-range, one-dimensional alignment on the graphene substrate in a direction perpendicular to the boundary of the graphene and substrate with a half-pitch size of 8 nm, which greatly alleviates the lithography resolution required for traditional chemoepitaxy DSA. A wide processing window is demonstrated with the gap between graphene stripes varying from 10 to 100 nm, overcoming the restriction on widths of guiding patterns to have commensurate domain spacing. When the gap was reduced to 10 nm, P2VP-b-PS-b-P2VP formed a straight-line pattern on both the graphene and the substrate. Monte Carlo simulations showed that the self-aligned assembly of the triblock copolymer on the graphene nanoribbons is guided at the boundary of parallel and perpendicular lamellae on graphene and SiO₂, respectively. Simulations also indicate that the swelling of a system allows for rapid rearrangement of chains and quickly anneal any misaligned grains and defects. The effect of the interaction strength between SiO₂ and P2VP on the self-assembly is systematically investigated in simulations.

Controlled self-assembly of block copolymers in printed sub-20 nm cross-bar structures

Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) has garnered much attention due to its excellent pattern resolution, simple process, and good compatibility with many other lithography methods for useful nanodevice applications. Here, we present a BCP-based multiple nanopatterning process to achieve three-dimensional (3D) pattern formation of metal/oxide hybrid nanostructures. We employed a self-assembled sub-20 nm SiO _x line pattern as a master mold for nanotransfer printing (nTP) to generate a cross-bar array. By using the transfer-printed cross-bar structures as BCP-guiding templates, we can obtain well-ordered BCP microdomains in the distinct spaces of the nanotemplates through a confined BCP self-assembly process. We also demonstrate the morphological evolution of a cylinder-forming BCP by controlling the BCP film thickness, showing a clear morphological transition from cylinders to spheres in the designated nanospaces. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to control the number of BCP spheres within the cross-bar 3D pattern by adjusting the printing angle of the multiple nTP process to provide a suitable area for spontaneous BCP accommodation. This multiple-patterning-based approach is applicable to useful 3D nanofabrication of various devices with complex hybrid nanostructures.

Regular ordering of spherical microdomains in dewetted monolayer islands induced by thermal annealing of spin-coated ultrathin films of a triblock copolymer

We report here spontaneous dewetting of a spin-coated, ultra-thin film of a sphere-forming block copolymer (BCP) upon thermal annealing, and that the dewetting resulted in the formation of plateau-shaped islands with a constant thickness consistent with the thickness of a monolayer, in which the spherical microdomains are regularly ordered two-dimensionally in a deformed hexagonal lattice. Thus, the spontaneous dewetting was ascribed to a mismatch between the initial spin-coated film thickness with respect to the monolayer thickness. Such dewetting of sphere-forming BCPs is considered to be deterministic compared to the cases of lamella- and cylinder-forming BCPs, as incommensuration in thickness is avoided by attaining perpendicular orientation without dewetting. We further quantitatively examined the ordering regularity of spherical microdomains in the dewetted monolayer islands to clarify the effect of confinement on sphere ordering. The degree of deformation of the hexagonal lattice was found to have an increasing tendency as a function of the degree of the deformation of the dewetted islands (the island shape), irrespective of the size of the island. Namely, islands with almost round shapes exhibit a well-ordered arrangement of the spherical microdomains in a perfect hexagonal lattice. Another notable finding is that the regular ordering of the spherical microdomains was found to be spoiled in the vicinity of the edge of the island. In other words, the spherical microdomains were well-ordered in a hexagonal lattice far from the edge of the island, while they were not regularly ordered in the vicinity of the edge, which may be due to mismatch between the curvature of the island's perimeter and the polygonal shape of ordered sphere grains.

Developing Anisotropy in Self-Assembled Block Copolymers: Methods, Properties, and Applications

Block copolymers (BCPs) self-assembly has continually attracted interest as a means to provide bottom-up control over nanostructures. While various methods have been demonstrated for efficiently ordering BCP nanodomains, most of them do not generically afford control of nanostructural orientation. For many applications of BCPs, such as energy storage, microelectronics, and separation membranes, alignment of nanodomains is a key requirement for enabling their practical use or enhancing materials performance. This review focuses on summarizing research progress on the development of anisotropy in BCP systems, covering a variety of topics from established aligning techniques, resultant material properties, and the associated applications. Specifically, the significance of aligning nanostructures and the anisotropic properties of BCPs is discussed and highlighted by demonstrating a few promising applications. Finally, the challenges and outlook are presented to further implement aligned BCPs into practical nanotechnological applications, where exciting opportunities exist.

Shear-Rolling Process for Unidirectionally and Perpendicularly Oriented Sub-10-nm Block Copolymer Patterns on the 4 in Scale

Shear alignment of the block copolymer (BCP) thin film is one of the promising directed self-assembly (DSA) methodologies for the unidirectional alignment of sub-10 nm microdomains of BCPs for next-generation nanolithography and nanowire-grid polarizers. However, because of the differences in the surface/interfacial energies at the top surface/bottom interface, the shear-induced ordering of BCP nanopatterns has been restricted to BCPs with spherical and cylindrical nanopatterns and cannot be realized for high-aspect-ratio perpendicular lamellar structures, which is essential for practical application to semiconductor pattern processes. It is still a difficult challenge to fabricate the unidirectional alignment in a short time over a large area. In this study, we propose an approach for combining the shear-rolling process with the filtered plasma treatment of BCP films for the fabrication of unidirectionally aligned and perpendicularly oriented lamellar nanostructures. This approach enables fabrication within 1 min on a 4 in scale. We treated filtered plasma on the BCP film for perpendicular orientation and executed the hot-rolling process with different roller and stage speeds. Large-scale shear was generated only at the location where the BCP film was in contact with both the roller and stage, effectively applying shear stress to a large area of the BCP film within a short time. The repeated application of this shear-rolling process can achieve a higher level of unidirectional alignment. Our aligned BCP vertical lamellae were used to fabricate a high-aspect-ratio sub-10-nm-wide metallic nanowire array via dry/wet processes. In addition, shear-rolling with chemoepitaxy patterns can achieve higher orientational order and lower defectivity.

From colloidal particles to photonic crystals: advances in self-assembly and their emerging applications

Over the last three decades, photonic crystals (PhCs) have attracted intense interests thanks to their broad potential applications in optics and photonics. Generally, these structures can be fabricated via either "top-down" lithographic or "bottom-up" self-assembly approaches. The self-assembly approaches have attracted particular attention due to their low cost, simple fabrication processes, relative convenience of scaling up, and the ease of creating complex structures with nanometer precision. The self-assembled colloidal crystals (CCs), which are good candidates for PhCs, have offered unprecedented opportunities for photonics, optics, optoelectronics, sensing, energy harvesting, environmental remediation, pigments, and many other applications. The creation of high-quality CCs and their mass fabrication over large areas are the critical limiting factors for real-world applications. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art techniques in the self-assembly of colloidal particles for the fabrication of large-area high-quality CCs and CCs with unique symmetries. The first part of this review summarizes the types of defects commonly encountered in the fabrication process and their effects on the optical properties of the resultant CCs. Next, the mechanisms of the formation of cracks/defects are discussed, and a range of versatile fabrication methods to create large-area crack/defect-free two-dimensional and three-dimensional CCs are described. Meanwhile, we also shed light on both the advantages and limitations of these advanced approaches developed to fabricate high-quality CCs. The self-assembly routes and achievements in the fabrication of CCs with the ability to open a complete photonic bandgap, such as cubic diamond and pyrochlore structure CCs, are discussed as well. Then emerging applications of large-area high-quality CCs and unique photonic structures enabled by the advanced self-assembly methods are illustrated. At the end of this review, we outlook the future approaches in the fabrication of perfect CCs and highlight their novel real-world applications.

Amphiphilic Ti porous transport layer for highly effective PEM unitized regenerative fuel cells

Polymer electrolyte membrane unitized regenerative fuel cells (PEM-URFCs) require bifunctional porous transport layers (PTLs) to play contradictory roles in a single unitized system: hydrophobicity for water drainage in the fuel cell (FC) mode and hydrophilicity for water supplement in the electrolysis cell (EC) mode. Here, we report a high-performance amphiphilic Ti PTL suitable for both FC and EC modes, thanks to alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic channels. To fabricate the amphiphilic PTL, we used a shadow mask patterning process using ultrathin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brush as a hydrophobic surface modifier, which can change the Ti PTL's surface polarity without decreasing its electrical conductivity. Consequently, performance improved by 4.3 times in FC (@ 0.6 V) and 1.9 times in EC (@ 1.8 V) from amphiphilic PTL. To elucidate reason for performance enhancement, discrete gas emission through the hydrophobic channels in amphiphilic PTL was verified under scanning electrochemical microscopy.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Thickness-Modulated Block Copolymer Thin Films for Controlling Nanodomain Orientations inside Bare Silicon Trenches

We study the orientation and ordering of nanodomains of a thickness-modulated lamellar block copolymer (BCP) thin film at each thickness region inside a topological nano/micropattern of bare silicon wafers without chemical pretreatments. With precise control of the thickness gradient of a BCP thin film and the width of a bare silicon trench, we successfully demonstrate (i) perfectly oriented lamellar nanodomains, (ii) pseudocylindrical nanopatterns as periodically aligned defects from the lamellar BCP thin film, and (iii) half-cylindrical nanostructure arrays leveraged by a trench sidewall with the strong preferential wetting of the PMMA block of the BCP. Our strategy is simple, efficient, and has an advantage in fabricating diverse nanopatterns simultaneously compared to conventional BCP lithography utilizing chemical pretreatments, such as a polymer brush or a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The proposed self-assembly nanopatterning process can be used in energy devices and biodevices requiring various nanopatterns on the same device and as next-generation nanofabrication processes with minimized fabrication steps for low-cost manufacturing techniques.

Self-Assembled Periodic Nanostructures Using Martensitic Phase Transformations

We describe a novel approach for the rational design and synthesis of self-assembled periodic nanostructures using martensitic phase transformations. We demonstrate this approach in a thin film of perovskite SrSnO₃ with reconfigurable periodic nanostructures consisting of regularly spaced regions of sharply contrasted dielectric properties. The films can be designed to have different periodicities and relative phase fractions via chemical doping or strain engineering. The dielectric contrast within a single film can be tuned using temperature and laser wavelength, effectively creating a variable photonic crystal. Our results show the realistic possibility of designing large-area self-assembled periodic structures using martensitic phase transformations with the potential of implementing "built-to-order" nanostructures for tailored optoelectronic functionalities.

Neutral-layer-free directed self-assembly of block copolymer in trench using capillary force-induced meniscus

We propose trench-directed self-assembly (TDSA) of a block copolymer (BCP) driven by a capillary force-induced meniscus as a facile scalable nanolithography method. Unlike conventional directed self-assembly methods, TDSA enables the achievement of neutral surface-free vertical orientations of the BCP nanopatterns irrespective of the polarizability of the substrate, which may be, for example, a ceramic (SiO₂) on Semiconductor (Si). In our demonstration of the proposed method, we generated various morphologies of the BCP nanopatterns by varying the trench width, and molecular weight of the BCP. The proposed TDSA method is potentially advantageous for the design of a process/device layout required for the development of an effective manufacturing process.

Large-Grained Cylindrical Block Copolymer Morphologies by One-Step Room-Temperature Casting

We report a facile method of ordering block copolymer (BCP) morphologies in which the conventional two-step casting and annealing steps are replaced by a single-step process where microphase separation and grain coarsening are seamlessly integrated within the casting protocol. This is achieved by slowing down solvent evaporation during casting by introducing a nonvolatile solvent into the BCP casting solution that effectively prolongs the duration of the grain-growth phase. We demonstrate the utility of this solvent evaporation annealing (SEA) method by producing well-ordered large-molecular-weight BCP thin films in a total processing time shorter than 3 min without resorting to any extra laboratory equipment other than a basic casting device, i.e., spin- or blade-coater. By analyzing the morphologies of the quenched samples, we identify a relatively narrow range of polymer concentration in the wet film, just above the order-disorder concentration, to be critical for obtaining large-grained morphologies. This finding is corroborated by the analysis of the grain-growth kinetics of horizontally oriented cylindrical domains where relatively large growth exponents (1/2) are observed, indicative of a more rapid defect-annihilation mechanism in the concentrated BCP solution than in thermally annealed BCP melts. Furthermore, the analysis of temperature-resolved kinetics data allows us to calculate the Arrhenius activation energy of the grain coarsening in this one-step BCP ordering process.

Effect of Molecular Architecture on the Self-Assembly of Bottlebrush Copolymers

The characteristics of a new architecture of bottlebrush copolymers (BBCPs) self-assembly were studied using self-consistent field theory. In this molecule, a series of AB linear diblock side chains were connected at the diblock junction using a C backbone. The control over the linker length and its chemical nature created an additional constraint on the intrinsic AB diblock microphase separation. Increasing side-chain crowding by increasing the grafting density and total degree of polymerization induced improved phase separation. This was reflected in the overall reduction in the effective interaction parameter between the diblocks as well as the abrupt increase in phase density when crossing the order-disorder transition. Side-chain crowding resulted in an increase in the equilibrium domain spacing compared to a linear diblock. On the other hand, the localization of block C at the AB interface generated a diffuse domain boundary and reduction in side-chain stretching. The unique behavior of BBCPs was observed in 1D confined systems where the molecule showed the natural tendency to orient domains parallel to neutral confinement in contrast to the behavior of confined diblocks. Such behavior largely depended on the degree of incompatibility between the AB blocks and BBCP structure. A ternary phase diagram was constructed for different proportions of each block. Rich morphologies of core-shell domains and tiling patterns were observed including octagonal and pentagonal polygons. The unique architecture of this bottlebrush molecule and its improved nanoscale properties make it an attractive candidate for various applications of nanotechnology.

Hierarchically Molecular Imprinted Porous Particles for Biomimetic Kidney Cleaning

Blood purification by adsorption of excessive biomolecules is vital for maintaining human health. Here, inspired by kidney self-purification, which removes a number of biomolecules with different sizes simultaneously, hierarchical molecular-imprinted inverse opal particles integrated with a herringbone microfluidic chip for efficient biomolecules cleaning are presented. The particle possesses combinative porous structure with both surface and interior imprints for the specific recognition of small molecules and biomacromolecules. Additionally, the presence of the herringbone mixer largely improve the adsorption efficiency due to enhanced mixing. Moreover, the inverse opal framework of the particles give rise to optical sensing ability for self-reporting of the adsorption states. These features, together with its reusability, biosafety, and biocompatibility, make the platform highly promising for clinical blood purification and artificial kidney construction.

van der Waals Epitaxy of Soft Twisted Bilayers: Lattice Relaxation and Mass Density Waves

Interfaces comprising incommensurate or twisted hexagonal lattices are ubiquitous and of great interest, from adsorbed organic/inorganic interfaces in electronic devices, to superlubricants, and more recently to van der Waals bilayer heterostructures (vdWHs) of graphene and other 2D materials that demonstrate a range of properties such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism. Here we show how growth of 2D crystalline domains of soft block copolymers (BCPs) on patterned hard hexagonal lattices provide fundamental insights into van der Waals heteroepitaxy. At moderate registration forces, it is experimentally found that these BCP-hard lattice vdWHs do not adopt a simple moiré superstructure, but instead adopt local structural relaxations known as mass density waves (MDWs). Simulations reveal that MDWs are a primary mechanism of energy minimization and are the origin of the observed preferential twist angle between the lattices.
