Quantum walk in position space with single optically trapped atoms

Universal terminal for cloud quantum computing

To bring the quantum computing capacities to the personal edge devices, the optimum approach is to have simple non-error-corrected personal devices that offload the computational tasks to scalable quantum computers via edge servers with cryogenic components and fault-tolerant schemes. Hence the network elements deploy different encoding protocols. This article proposes quantum terminals that are compatible with different encoding protocols; paving the way for realizing mobile edge-quantum computing. By accommodating the atomic lattice processor inside a cavity, the entangling mechanism is provided by the Rydberg cavity-QED technology. The auxiliary atom, responsible for photon emission, senses the logical qubit state via the long-range Rydberg interaction. In other words, the state of logical qubit determines the interaction-induced level-shift at the central atom and hence derives the system over distinguished eigenstates, featuring photon emission at the early or late times controlled by quantum interference. Applying an entanglement-swapping gate on two emitted photons would make the far-separated logical qubits entangled regardless of their encoding protocols. The proposed scheme provides a universal photonic interface for clustering the processors and connecting them with the quantum memories and quantum cloud compatible with different encoding formats.

Dephasing-Induced Mobility Edges in Quasicrystals

Mobility edges (ME), separating Anderson-localized states from extended states, are known to arise in the single-particle energy spectrum of certain one-dimensional lattices with aperiodic order. Dephasing and decoherence effects are widely acknowledged to spoil Anderson localization and to enhance transport, suggesting that ME and localization are unlikely to be observable in the presence of dephasing. Here it is shown that, contrary to such a wisdom, ME can be created by pure dephasing effects in quasicrystals in which all states are delocalized under coherent dynamics. Since the lifetimes of localized states induced by dephasing effects can be extremely long, rather counterintuitively decoherence can enhance localization of excitation in the lattice. The results are illustrated by considering photonic quantum walks in synthetic mesh lattices.

Frustrated Extended Bose-Hubbard Model and Deconfined Quantum Critical Points with Optical Lattices at the Antimagic Wavelength

The study of geometrically frustrated many-body quantum systems is of central importance to uncover novel quantum mechanical effects. We design a scheme where ultracold bosons trapped in a one-dimensional state-dependent optical lattice are modeled by a frustrated Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. A derivation of the Hamiltonian parameters based on Cesium atoms, further show large tunability of contact and nearest-neighbor interactions. For pure contact repulsion, we discover the presence of two phases peculiar to frustrated quantum magnets: the bond-order-wave insulator with broken inversion symmetry and a chiral superfluid. When the nearest-neighbor repulsion becomes sizable, a further density-wave insulator with broken translational symmetry can appear. We show that the phase transition between the two spontaneously symmetry-broken phases is continuous, thus representing a one-dimensional deconfined quantum critical point not captured by the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson symmetry-breaking paradigm. Our results provide a solid ground to unveil the novel quantum physics induced by the interplay of nonlocal interactions, geometrical frustration, and quantum fluctuations.

Efficient learning of mixed-state tomography for photonic quantum walk

Noise-enhanced applications in open quantum walk (QW) has recently seen a surge due to their ability to improve performance. However, verifying the success of open QW is challenging, as mixed-state tomography is a resource-intensive process, and implementing all required measurements is almost impossible due to various physical constraints. To address this challenge, we present a neural-network-based method for reconstructing mixed states with a high fidelity (∼97.5%) while costing only 50% of the number of measurements typically required for open discrete-time QW in one dimension. Our method uses a neural density operator that models the system and environment, followed by a generalized natural gradient descent procedure that significantly speeds up the training process. Moreover, we introduce a compact interferometric measurement device, improving the scalability of our photonic QW setup that enables experimental learning of mixed states. Our results demonstrate that highly expressive neural networks can serve as powerful alternatives to traditional state tomography.

Flat-band localization and interaction-induced delocalization of photons

Lattices with dispersionless, or flat, energy bands have attracted substantial interest in part due to the strong dependence of particle dynamics on interactions. Using superconducting circuits, we experimentally study the dynamics of one and two particles in a single plaquette of a lattice whose band structure consists entirely of flat bands. We first observe strictly localized dynamics of a single particle, the hallmark of all-bands-flat physics. Upon initializing two particles on the same site, we see an interaction-enabled delocalized walk across the plaquette. We further find localization in Fock space for two particles initialized on opposite sides of the plaquette. These results mark the first experimental observation of a quantum walk that becomes delocalized due to interactions and establishes a key building block in superconducting circuits for studying flat-band dynamics with strong interactions.

Simulation of quantum walks on a circle with polar molecules via optimal control

Quantum walks are the quantum counterpart of classical random walks and have various applications in quantum information science. Polar molecules have rich internal energy structure and long coherence time and thus are considered as a promising candidate for quantum information processing. In this paper, we propose a theoretical scheme for implementing discrete-time quantum walks on a circle with dipole-dipole coupled SrO molecules. The states of the walker and the coin are encoded in the pendular states of polar molecules induced by an external electric field. We design the optimal microwave pulses for implementing quantum walks on a four-node circle and a three-node circle by multi-target optimal control theory. To reduce the accumulation of decoherence and improve the fidelity, we successfully realize a step of quantum walk with only one optimal pulse. Moreover, we also encode the walker into a three-level molecular qutrit and a four-level molecular ququart and design the corresponding optimal pulses for quantum walks, which can reduce the number of molecules used. It is found that all the quantum walks on a circle in our scheme can be achieved via optimal control fields with high fidelities. Our results could shed some light on the implementation of discrete-time quantum walks and high-dimensional quantum information processing with polar molecules.

First Detection and Tunneling Time of a Quantum Walk

We consider the first detection problem for a one-dimensional quantum walk with repeated local measurements. Employing the stroboscopic projective measurement protocol and the renewal equation, we study the effect of tunneling on the detection time. Specifically, we study the continuous-time quantum walk on an infinite tight-binding lattice for two typical situations with physical reality. The first is the case of a quantum walk in the absence of tunneling with a Gaussian initial state. The second is the case where a barrier is added to the system. It is shown that the transition of the decay behavior of the first detection probability can be observed by modifying the initial condition, and in the presence of a tunneling barrier, the particle can be detected earlier than the impurity-free lattice. This suggests that the evolution of the walker is expedited when it tunnels through the barrier under repeated measurement. The first detection tunneling time is introduced to investigate the tunneling time of the quantum walk. In addition, we analyze the critical transitive point by deriving an asymptotic formula.

Fermionic Correlation Functions from Randomized Measurements in Programmable Atomic Quantum Devices

We provide an efficient randomized measurement protocol to estimate two- and four-point fermionic correlations in ultracold atom experiments. Our approach is based on combining random atomic beam splitter operations, which can be realized with programmable optical landscapes, with high-resolution imaging systems such as quantum gas microscopes. We illustrate our results in the context of the variational quantum eigensolver algorithm for solving quantum chemistry problems.

Quantum simulation of Hawking radiation and curved spacetime with a superconducting on-chip black hole

Hawking radiation is one of the quantum features of a black hole that can be understood as a quantum tunneling across the event horizon of the black hole, but it is quite difficult to directly observe the Hawking radiation of an astrophysical black hole. Here, we report a fermionic lattice-model-type realization of an analogue black hole by using a chain of 10 superconducting transmon qubits with interactions mediated by 9 transmon-type tunable couplers. The quantum walks of quasi-particle in the curved spacetime reflect the gravitational effect near the black hole, resulting in the behaviour of stimulated Hawking radiation, which is verified by the state tomography measurement of all 7 qubits outside the horizon. In addition, the dynamics of entanglement in the curved spacetime is directly measured. Our results would stimulate more interests to explore the related features of black holes using the programmable superconducting processor with tunable couplers.

Discrete-time quantum walk dispersion control through long-range correlations

We investigate the evolution dynamics of inhomogeneous discrete-time one-dimensional quantum walks displaying long-range correlations in both space and time. The associated quantum coin operators of internal states are built to exhibit random inhomogeneity distribution of long-range correlations embedded in the time evolution protocol through a fractional Brownian motion with spectrum following a power-law behavior, S(k)∼1/k^{ν}. From extensive numerical simulations with averages over a large number of independent realizations of the phases of quantum coins, the power-law correlated disorder encoded in the coin phases is shown to give rise to a wide variety of spreading patterns of the qubit states, from localized to subdiffusive, diffusive, and superdiffusive (including ballistic) behavior, depending on the relative strength of the parameters driving the correlation degree. Dispersion control is possible in one-dimensional discrete-time quantum walks by tuning the long-range correlation properties assigned to the inhomogeneous quantum coin operator.

Scalable quantum processors empowered by the Fermi scattering of Rydberg electrons

Quantum computing promises exponential speed-up compared to its classical counterpart. While the neutral atom processors are the pioneering platform in terms of scalability, the dipolar Rydberg gates impose the main bottlenecks on the scaling of these devices. This article presents an alternative scheme for neutral atom quantum processing, based on the Fermi scattering of a Rydberg electron from ground-state atoms in spin-dependent lattice geometries. Instead of relying on Rydberg pair-potentials, the interaction is controlled by engineering the electron cloud of a sole Rydberg atom. The present scheme addresses the scaling obstacles in Rydberg processors by exponentially suppressing the population of short-lived states and by operating in ultra-dense atomic lattices. The restoring forces in molecule type Rydberg-Fermi potential preserve the trapping over a long interaction period. Furthermore, the proposed scheme mitigates different competing infidelity criteria, eliminates unwanted cross-talks, and significantly suppresses the operation depth in running complicated quantum algorithms.

Tweezer-programmable 2D quantum walks in a Hubbard-regime lattice

Quantum walks provide a framework for designing quantum algorithms that is both intuitive and universal. To leverage the computational power of these walks, it is important to be able to programmably modify the graph a walker traverses while maintaining coherence. We do this by combining the fast, programmable control provided by optical tweezers with the scalable, homogeneous environment of an optical lattice. With these tools we study continuous-time quantum walks of single atoms on a square lattice and perform proof-of-principle demonstrations of spatial search with these walks. When scaled to more particles, the capabilities demonstrated can be extended to study a variety of problems in quantum information science, including performing more effective versions of spatial search using a larger graph with increased connectivity.

Signatures of Nontrivial Pairing in the Quantum Walk of Two-Component Bosons

Nearest neighbor bosons possessing only on-site interactions do not form on-site bound pairs in their quantum walk due to fermionization. We obtain signatures of nontrivial on-site pairing in the quantum walk of strongly interacting two component bosons in a one dimensional lattice. By considering an initial state with particles from different components located at the nearest-neighbor sites in the central region of the lattice, we show that in the dynamical evolution of the system, competing intra- and intercomponent on-site repulsion leads to the formation of on-site intercomponent bound states. We find that when the total number of particles is three, an intercomponent pair is favored in the limit of equal intra- and intercomponent interaction strengths. However, when two bosons from each species are considered, intercomponent pairs and trimer are favored depending on the ratios of the intra- and intercomponent interactions. In both cases, we find that the quantum walks exhibit a reentrant behavior as a function of intercomponent interaction.

Thermalization dynamics of macroscopic weakly nonintegrable maps

We study thermalization of weakly nonintegrable nonlinear unitary lattice dynamics. We identify two distinct thermalization regimes close to the integrable limits of either linear dynamics or disconnected lattice dynamics. For weak nonlinearity, the almost conserved actions correspond to extended observables which are coupled into a long-range network. For weakly connected lattices, the corresponding local observables are coupled into a short-range network. We compute the evolution of the variance ^σ ( T ) of finite time average distributions for extended and local observables. We extract the ergodization time scale _T which marks the onset of thermalization, and determine the type of network through the subsequent decay of ^σ ( T ). We use the complementary analysis of Lyapunov spectra [M. Malishava and S. Flach, Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 134102 (2022)] and compare the Lyapunov time _T with _T. We characterize the spatial properties of the tangent vector and arrive at a complete classification picture of weakly nonintegrable macroscopic thermalization dynamics.

Quantum transport on honeycomb networks

We study the transport properties on honeycomb networks motivated by graphene structures by using the continuous-time quantum walk (CTQW) model. For various relevant topologies we consider the average return probability and its long-time average as measures for the transport efficiency. These quantities are fully determined by the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the connectivity matrix of the network. For all networks derived from graphene structures we notice a nontrivial interplay between good spreading and localization effects. Flat graphene with similar number of hexagons along both directions shows a decrease in transport efficiency compared to more one-dimensional structures. This loss can be overcome by increasing the number of layers, thus creating a graphite network, but it gets less efficient when rolling up the sheets so that a nanotube structure is considered. We found peculiar results for honeycomb networks constructed from square graphene, i.e. the same number of hexagons along both directions of the graphene sheet. For these kind of networks we encounter significant differences between networks with an even or odd number of hexagons along one of the axes.

Two component quantum walk in one-dimensional lattice with hopping imbalance

We investigate the two-component quantum walk in one-dimensional lattice. We show that the inter-component interaction strength together with the hopping imbalance between the components exhibit distinct features in the quantum walk for different initial states. When the walkers are initially on the same site, both the slow and fast particles perform independent particle quantum walks when the interaction between them is weak. However, stronger inter-particle interactions result in quantum walks by the repulsively bound pair formed between the two particles. For different initial states when the walkers are on different sites initially, the quantum walk performed by the slow particle is almost independent of that of the fast particle, which exhibits reflected and transmitted components across the particle with large hopping strength for weak interactions. Beyond a critical value of the interaction strength, the wave function of the fast particle ceases to penetrate through the slow particle signalling a spatial phase separation. However, when the two particles are initially at the two opposite edges of the lattice, then the interaction facilitates the complete reflection of both of them from each other. We analyze the above mentioned features by examining various physical quantities such as the on-site density evolution, two-particle correlation functions and transmission coefficients.

Dirac Spatial Search with Electric Fields

Electric Dirac quantum walks, which are a discretisation of the Dirac equation for a spinor coupled to an electric field, are revisited in order to perform spatial searches. The Coulomb electric field of a point charge is used as a non local oracle to perform a spatial search on a 2D grid of N points. As other quantum walks proposed for spatial search, these walks localise partially on the charge after a finite period of time. However, contrary to other walks, this localisation time scales as N for small values of N and tends asymptotically to a constant for larger Ns, thus offering a speed-up over conventional methods.

Intermediate-Range Casimir-Polder Interaction Probed by High-Order Slow Atom Diffraction

At nanometer separation, the dominant interaction between an atom and a material surface is the fluctuation-induced Casimir-Polder potential. We demonstrate that slow atoms crossing a silicon nitride transmission nanograting are a remarkably sensitive probe for that potential. A 15% difference between nonretarded (van der Waals) and retarded Casimir-Polder potentials is discernible at distances smaller than 51 nm. We discuss the relative influence of various theoretical and experimental parameters on the potential in detail. Our work paves the way to high-precision measurement of the Casimir-Polder potential as a prerequisite for understanding fundamental physics and its relevance to applications in quantum-enhanced sensing.

Multiparticle Quantum Walks and Fisher Information in One-Dimensional Lattices

Recent experiments on quantum walks (QWs) demonstrated a full control over the statistics-dependent walks of single particles and two particles in one-dimensional lattices. However, little is known about the general characterization of QWs at the many-body level. Here, we rigorously study QWs, Bloch oscillations, and the quantum Fisher information for three indistinguishable bosons and fermions in one-dimensional lattices using a time-evolving block decimation algorithm and many-body perturbation theory. We show that such strongly correlated QWs not only give rise to statistics-and-interaction-dependent ballistic transports of scattering states and of two- and three-body bound states but also allow a quantum enhanced precision measurement of the gravitational force. In contrast to the QWs of the fermions, the QWs of three bosons exhibit strongly correlated Bloch oscillations, which present a surprising time scaling t^{3} of the Fisher information below a characteristic time t_{0} and saturate to the fundamental limit of t^{2} for t>t_{0}.

Shannon Entropy and Diffusion Coefficient in Parity-Time Symmetric Quantum Walks

Non-Hermitian topological edge states have many intriguing properties, however, to date, they have mainly been discussed in terms of bulk–boundary correspondence. Here, we propose using a bulk property of diffusion coefficients for probing the topological states and exploring their dynamics. The diffusion coefficient was found to show unique features with the topological phase transitions driven by parity–time (PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian discrete-time quantum walks as well as by Hermitian ones, despite the fact that artificial boundaries are not constructed by an inhomogeneous quantum walk. For a Hermitian system, a turning point and abrupt change appears in the diffusion coefficient when the system is approaching the topological phase transition, while it remains stable in the trivial topological state. For a non-Hermitian system, except for the feature associated with the topological transition, the diffusion coefficient in the PT-symmetric-broken phase demonstrates an abrupt change with a peak structure. In addition, the Shannon entropy of the quantum walk is found to exhibit a direct correlation with the diffusion coefficient. The numerical results presented herein may open up a new avenue for studying the topological state in non-Hermitian quantum walk systems.

Continuous quantum walk in a 1-dimensional plasmonic lattice structure based on metal strip waveguides

We experimentally studied a continuous time evolution of a "plasmonic" walker in a 1-dimensional lattice structure based on long-range surface plasmon polariton waveguides. The plasmonic walker exhibited a typical time evolution of a 1-dimensional quantum walk, which indicates that the plasmonic system is a potential platform to construct quantum walk simulators. By comparing experimental results to numerical simulations, the fidelity of the plasmonic quantum walk simulator is estimated to be > 0.96, which demonstrates that the plasmonic system can be a feasible platform for large-scale and high dimensional quantum walk simulators.

Universal quantum computing using single-particle discrete-time quantum walk

Quantum walk has been regarded as a primitive to universal quantum computation. In this paper, we demonstrate the realization of the universal set of quantum gates on two- and three-qubit systems by using the operations required to describe the single particle discrete-time quantum walk on a position space. The idea is to utilize the effective Hilbert space of the single qubit and the position space on which it evolves in order to realize multi-qubit states and universal set of quantum gates on them. Realization of many non-trivial gates and engineering arbitrary states is simpler in the proposed quantum walk model when compared to the circuit based model of computation. We will also discuss the scalability of the model and some propositions for using lesser number of qubits in realizing larger qubit systems.

Persistence of topological phases in non-Hermitian quantum walks

Discrete-time quantum walks are known to exhibit exotic topological states and phases. Physical realization of quantum walks in a lossy environment may destroy these phases. We investigate the behaviour of topological states in quantum walks in the presence of a lossy environment. The environmental effects in the quantum walk dynamics are addressed using the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach. We show that the topological phases of the quantum walks are robust against moderate losses. The topological order in one-dimensional split-step quantum walk persists as long as the Hamiltonian respects exact [Formula: see text]-symmetry. Although the topological nature persists in two-dimensional quantum walks as well, the [Formula: see text]-symmetry has no role to play there. Furthermore, we observe topological phase transition in two-dimensional quantum walks that is induced by losses in the system.

Uncertainty Relation between Detection Probability and Energy Fluctuations

A classical random walker starting on a node of a finite graph will always reach any other node since the search is ergodic, namely it fully explores space, hence the arrival probability is unity. For quantum walks, destructive interference may induce effectively non-ergodic features in such search processes. Under repeated projective local measurements, made on a target state, the final detection of the system is not guaranteed since the Hilbert space is split into a bright subspace and an orthogonal dark one. Using this we find an uncertainty relation for the deviations of the detection probability from its classical counterpart, in terms of the energy fluctuations.

Quantum walks on a programmable two-dimensional 62-qubit superconducting processor

Quantum walks are the quantum mechanical analog of classical random walks and an extremely powerful tool in quantum simulations, quantum search algorithms, and even for universal quantum computing. In our work, we have designed and fabricated an 8-by-8 two-dimensional square superconducting qubit array composed of 62 functional qubits. We used this device to demonstrate high-fidelity single- and two-particle quantum walks. Furthermore, with the high programmability of the quantum processor, we implemented a Mach-Zehnder interferometer where the quantum walker coherently traverses in two paths before interfering and exiting. By tuning the disorders on the evolution paths, we observed interference fringes with single and double walkers. Our work is a milestone in the field, bringing future larger-scale quantum applications closer to realization for noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors.

Experimental optimal generation of hybrid entangled states in photonic quantum walks

While the existence of disorders is commonly believed to weaken the unique properties of quantum systems, recent progress has predicted that it can exhibit a counterintuitive enhanced effect on the behavior of entanglement generation, which is even independent of the chosen initial conditions and physical platforms. However, to achieve a maximally entangled state in such disordered quantum systems, the key limitation of this is the scarcity of an infinite coherence time, which makes its experimental realization challenging. Here, we experimentally investigate the entanglement entropy dynamics in a photonic quantum walk with disorders in time. Through the incorporation of a classic optimization algorithm, we experimentally demonstrate that such disordered systems can relax to a high-entanglement hybrid state at any given time step. Moreover, this prominent entangling ability is universal for a wide variety of initial conditions. Our results may inspire achieving a well-controlled entanglement generator for quantum computation and information tasks.

From classical to quantum walks with stochastic resetting on networks

Random walks are fundamental models of stochastic processes with applications in various fields, including physics, biology, and computer science. We study classical and quantum random walks under the influence of stochastic resetting on arbitrary networks. Based on the mathematical formalism of quantum stochastic walks, we provide a framework of classical and quantum walks whose evolution is determined by graph Laplacians. We study the influence of quantum effects on the stationary and long-time average probability distribution by interpolating between the classical and quantum regime. We compare our analytical results on stationary and long-time average probability distributions with numerical simulations on different networks, revealing differences in the way resets affect the sampling properties of classical and quantum walks.

Exploring complex graphs using three-dimensional quantum walks of correlated photons

Graph representations are a powerful concept for solving complex problems across natural science, as patterns of connectivity can give rise to a multitude of emergent phenomena. Graph-based approaches have proven particularly fruitful in quantum communication and quantum search algorithms in highly branched quantum networks. Here, we introduce a previously unidentified paradigm for the direct experimental realization of excitation dynamics associated with three-dimensional networks by exploiting the hybrid action of spatial and polarization degrees of freedom of photon pairs in complex waveguide circuits with tailored birefringence. This testbed for the experimental exploration of multiparticle quantum walks on complex, highly connected graphs paves the way toward exploiting the applicative potential of fermionic dynamics in integrated quantum photonics.

Implementing graph-theoretic quantum algorithms on a silicon photonic quantum walk processor

Applications of quantum walks can depend on the number, exchange symmetry and indistinguishability of the particles involved, and the underlying graph structures where they move. Here, we show that silicon photonics, by exploiting an entanglement-driven scheme, can realize quantum walks with full control over all these properties in one device. The device we realize implements entangled two-photon quantum walks on any five-vertex graph, with continuously tunable particle exchange symmetry and indistinguishability. We show how this simulates single-particle walks on larger graphs, with size and geometry controlled by tuning the properties of the composite quantum walkers. We apply the device to quantum walk algorithms for searching vertices in graphs and testing for graph isomorphisms. In doing so, we implement up to 100 sampled time steps of quantum walk evolution on each of 292 different graphs. This opens the way to large-scale, programmable quantum walk processors for classically intractable applications.

Experimental Parity-Time Symmetric Quantum Walks for Centrality Ranking on Directed Graphs

Using quantum walks (QWs) to rank the centrality of nodes in networks, represented by graphs, is advantageous compared to certain widely used classical algorithms. However, it is challenging to implement a directed graph via QW, since it corresponds to a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and thus cannot be accomplished by conventional QW. Here we report the realizations of centrality rankings of a three-, a four-, and a nine-vertex directed graph with parity-time (PT) symmetric quantum walks by using high-dimensional photonic quantum states, multiple concatenated interferometers, and dimension dependent loss to achieve these. We demonstrate the advantage of the QW approach experimentally by breaking the vertex rank degeneracy in a four-vertex graph. Furthermore, we extend our experiment from single-photon to two-photon Fock states as inputs and realize the centrality ranking of a nine-vertex graph. Our work shows that a PT symmetric multiphoton quantum walk paves the way for realizing advanced algorithms.

Enhancing Dipolar Interactions between Molecules Using State-Dependent Optical Tweezer Traps

We show how state-dependent optical potentials can be used to trap a pair of molecules in different internal states at a separation much smaller than the wavelength of the trapping light. This close spacing greatly enhances the dipole-dipole interaction and we show how it can be used to implement two-qubit gates between molecules that are 100 times faster than existing protocols and than rotational coherence times already demonstrated. We analyze complications due to hyperfine structure, tensor light shifts, photon scattering, and collisional loss, and conclude that none is a barrier to implementing the scheme.

Quantum walks and Dirac cellular automata on a programmable trapped-ion quantum computer

The quantum walk formalism is a widely used and highly successful framework for modeling quantum systems, such as simulations of the Dirac equation, different dynamics in both the low and high energy regime, and for developing a wide range of quantum algorithms. Here we present the circuit-based implementation of a discrete-time quantum walk in position space on a five-qubit trapped-ion quantum processor. We encode the space of walker positions in particular multi-qubit states and program the system to operate with different quantum walk parameters, experimentally realizing a Dirac cellular automaton with tunable mass parameter. The quantum walk circuits and position state mapping scale favorably to a larger model and physical systems, allowing the implementation of any algorithm based on discrete-time quantum walks algorithm and the dynamics associated with the discretized version of the Dirac equation.

Probing quantum walks through coherent control of high-dimensionally entangled photons

Control over the duration of a quantum walk is critical to unlocking its full potential for quantum search and the simulation of many-body physics. Here we report quantum walks of biphoton frequency combs where the duration of the walk, or circuit depth, is tunable over a continuous range without any change to the physical footprint of the system-a feature absent from previous photonic implementations. In our platform, entangled photon pairs hop between discrete frequency modes with the coupling between these modes mediated by electro-optic modulation of the waveguide refractive index. Through control of the phase across different modes, we demonstrate a rich variety of behavior: from walks exhibiting enhanced ballistic transport or strong energy confinement, to subspaces featuring scattering centers or local traps. We also explore the role of entanglement dimensionality in the creation of energy bound states, which illustrates the potential for these walks to quantify high-dimensional entanglement.

Quantum walks in periodically kicked circuit QED lattice

We investigate the quantum walks of a single particle in a one-dimensional periodically kicked circuit quantum electrodynamics lattice. It is found that the dynamic process of the quantum walker is affected by the strength of incommensurate potentials and the driven periods of the system. We calculate the mean square displacement to illustrate the dynamic properties of the quantum walks, which shows that the localized process of the quantum walker presents the zero power-law index distribution. By calculating the mean information entropy, we find that the next-nearest-neighbor interactions have a remarkable deviation effects on the quantum walks and make a more stricter parameter condition for the localization of the quantum walker. Moreover, assisted by the lattice-based cavity input-output process, the localized features of circuit quantum electrodynamics lattice can be observed by measuring the average photon number of the cavity field in the steady state.

Dynamical Singularities of Floquet Higher-Order Topological Insulators

We propose a versatile framework to dynamically generate Floquet higher-order topological insulators by multistep driving of topologically trivial Hamiltonians. Two analytically solvable examples are used to illustrate this procedure to yield Floquet quadrupole and octupole insulators with zero- and/or π-corner modes protected by mirror symmetries. Furthermore, we introduce dynamical topological invariants from the full unitary return map and show its phase bands contain Weyl singularities whose topological charges form dynamical multipole moments in the Brillouin zone. Combining them with the topological index of a Floquet Hamiltonian gives a pair of Z_{2} invariant ν_{0} and ν_{π} which fully characterize the higher-order topology and predict the appearance of zero- and π-corner modes. Our work establishes a systematic route to construct and characterize Floquet higher-order topological phases.

Fast and slow dynamics for classical and quantum walks on mean-field small world networks

This work investigates the dynamical properties of classical and quantum random walks on mean-field small-world (MFSW) networks in the continuous time version. The adopted formalism profits from the large number of exact mathematical properties of their adjacency and Laplacian matrices. Exact expressions for both transition probabilities in terms of Bessel functions are derived. Results are compared to numerical results obtained by working directly the Hamiltonian of the model. For the classical evolution, any infinitesimal amount of disorder causes an exponential decay to the asymptotic equilibrium state, in contrast to the polynomial behavior for the homogeneous case. The typical quantum oscillatory evolution has been characterized by local maxima. It indicates polynomial decay to equilibrium for any degree of disorder. The main finding of the work is the identification of a faster classical spreading as compared to the quantum counterpart. It stays in opposition to the well known diffusive and ballistic for, respectively, the classical and quantum spreading in the linear chain.

Aperiodic space-inhomogeneous quantum walks: Localization properties, energy spectra, and enhancement of entanglement

We study the localization properties, energy spectra, and coin-position entanglement of the aperiodic discrete-time quantum walks. The aperiodicity is described by spatially dependent quantum coins distributed on the lattice, whose distribution is neither periodic (Bloch-like) nor random (Anderson-like). Within transport properties we identified delocalized and localized quantum walks mediated by a proper adjusting of aperiodic parameter. Both scenarios are studied by exploring typical quantities (inverse participation ratio, survival probability, and wave packet width), as well as the energy spectra of an associated effective Hamiltonian. By using the energy spectra analysis, we show that the early stage the inhomogeneity leads to a vanishing gap between two main bands, which justifies the predominantly delocalized character observed for ν<0.5. With increase of ν arise gaps and flat bands on the energy spectra, which corroborates the suppression of transport detected for ν>0.5. For ν high enough, we observe an energy spectra, which resembles that described by the one-dimensional Anderson model. Within coin-position entanglement, we show many settings in which an enhancement in the ability to entangle is observed. This behavior brings new information about the role played by aperiodicity on the coin-position entanglement for static inhomogeneous systems, reported before as almost always reducing the entanglement when comparing with the homogeneous case. We extend the analysis in order to show that systems with static inhomogeneity are able to exhibit asymptotic limit of entanglement.

Multi-bit quantum random number generation from a single qubit quantum walk

We present a scheme for multi-bit quantum random number generation using a single qubit discrete-time quantum walk in one-dimensional space. Irrespective of the initial state of the qubit, quantum interference and entanglement of particle with the position space in the walk dynamics certifies high randomness in the system. Quantum walk in a position space of dimension 2l + 1 ensures string of (l + 2)-bits of random numbers from a single measurement. Bit commitment with the position space and control over the spread of the probability distribution in position space enable us with options to extract multi-bit random numbers. This highlights the power of one qubit, its practical importance in generating multi-bit string in single measurement and the role it can play in quantum communication and cryptographic protocols. This can be further extended with quantum walks in higher dimensions.

Strongly correlated quantum walks with a 12-qubit superconducting processor

Quantum walks are the quantum analogs of classical random walks, which allow for the simulation of large-scale quantum many-body systems and the realization of universal quantum computation without time-dependent control. We experimentally demonstrate quantum walks of one and two strongly correlated microwave photons in a one-dimensional array of 12 superconducting qubits with short-range interactions. First, in one-photon quantum walks, we observed the propagation of the density and correlation of the quasiparticle excitation of the superconducting qubit and quantum entanglement between qubit pairs. Second, when implementing two-photon quantum walks by exciting two superconducting qubits, we observed the fermionization of strongly interacting photons from the measured time-dependent long-range anticorrelations, representing the antibunching of photons with attractive interactions. The demonstration of quantum walks on a quantum processor, using superconducting qubits as artificial atoms and tomographic readout, paves the way to quantum simulation of many-body phenomena and universal quantum computation.

Discrete Geometry from Quantum Walks

A particular family of Discrete Time Quantum Walks (DTQWs) simulating fermion propagation in 2D curved space-time is revisited. Usual continuous covariant derivatives and spin-connections are generalized into discrete covariant derivatives along the lattice coordinates and discrete connections. The concepts of metrics and 2-beins are also extended to the discrete realm. Two slightly different Riemann curvatures are then defined on the space-time lattice as the curvatures of the discrete spin connection. These two curvatures are closely related and one of them tends at the continuous limit towards the usual, continuous Riemann curvature. A simple example is also worked out in full.

A versatile quantum walk resonator with bright classical light

In a Quantum Walk (QW) the "walker" follows all possible paths at once through the principle of quantum superposition, differentiating itself from classical random walks where one random path is taken at a time. This facilitates the searching of problem solution spaces faster than with classical random walks, and holds promise for advances in dynamical quantum simulation, biological process modelling and quantum computation. Here we employ a versatile and scalable resonator configuration to realise quantum walks with bright classical light. We experimentally demonstrate the versatility of our approach by implementing a variety of QWs, all with the same experimental platform, while the use of a resonator allows for an arbitrary number of steps without scaling the number of optics. This paves the way for future QW implementations with spatial modes of light in free-space that are both versatile and scalable.

Quantized Alternate Current on Curved Graphene

Based on the numerical solution of the Quantum Lattice Boltzmann Method in curved space, we predicted the onset of a quantized alternating current on curved graphene sheets. This numerical prediction was verified analytically via a set of semi-classical equations that related the Berry curvature to real space curvature. The proposed quantized oscillating current on curved graphene could form the basis for the implementation of quantum information-processing algorithms.

Quantum walk hydrodynamics

A simple Discrete-Time Quantum Walk (DTQW) on the line is revisited and given an hydrodynamic interpretation through a novel relativistic generalization of the Madelung transform. Numerical results show that suitable initial conditions indeed produce hydrodynamical shocks and that the coherence achieved in current experiments is robust enough to simulate quantum hydrodynamical phenomena through DTQWs. An analytical computation of the asymptotic quantum shock structure is presented. The non-relativistic limit is explored in the Supplementary Material (SM).

Wave Packet Spreading with Disordered Nonlinear Discrete-Time Quantum Walks

We use a novel unitary map toolbox-discrete-time quantum walks originally designed for quantum computing-to implement ultrafast computer simulations of extremely slow dynamics in a nonlinear and disordered medium. Previous reports on wave packet spreading in Gross-Pitaevskii lattices observed subdiffusion with the second moment m_{2}∼t^{1/3} (with time in units of a characteristic scale t_{0}) up to the largest computed times of the order of 10^{8}. A fundamental and controversially debated question-whether this process can continue ad infinitum, or has to slow down-stands unresolved. Current experimental devices are not capable to even reach 1/10^{4} of the reported computational horizons. With our toolbox, we outperform previous computational results and observe that the universal subdiffusion persists over an additional four decades reaching "astronomic" times 2×10^{12}. Such a dramatic extension of previous computational horizons suggests that subdiffusion is universal, and that the toolbox can be efficiently used to assess other hard computational many-body problems.

Quantum Spin Dynamics of Individual Neutral Impurities Coupled to a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We report on spin dynamics of individual, localized neutral impurities immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Single cesium atoms are transported into a cloud of rubidium atoms and thermalize with the bath, and the ensuing spin exchange between localized impurities with quasispin F_{i}=3 and bath atoms with F_{b}=1 is resolved. Comparing our data to numerical simulations of spin dynamics, we find that, for gas densities in the Bose-Einstein condensate regime, the dynamics is dominated by the condensed fraction of the cloud. We spatially resolve the density overlap of impurities and gas by the spin population of impurities. Finally, we trace the coherence of impurities prepared in a coherent superposition of internal states when coupled to a gas of different densities. For our choice of states, we show that, despite high bath densities and, thus, fast thermalization rates, the impurity coherence is not affected by the bath, realizing a regime of sympathetic cooling while maintaining internal state coherence. Our work paves the way toward the nondestructive probing of quantum many-body systems via localized impurities.

Quantum Walk in Momentum Space with a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We present a discrete-time, one-dimensional quantum walk based on the entanglement between the momentum of ultracold rubidium atoms (the walk space) and two internal atomic states (the "coin" degree of freedom). Our scheme is highly flexible and can provide a platform for a wide range of applications such as quantum search algorithms, the observation of topological phases, and the realization of walks with higher dimensionality. Along with the investigation of the quantum-to-classical transition, we demonstrate the distinctive features of a quantum walk and contrast them to those of its classical counterpart. Also, by manipulating either the walk or coin operator, we show how the walk dynamics can be steered or even reversed.

Enhanced non-Markovian behavior in quantum walks with Markovian disorder

Non-Markovian quantum effects are typically observed in systems interacting with structured reservoirs. Discrete-time quantum walks are prime example of such systems in which, quantum memory arises due to the controlled interaction between the coin and position degrees of freedom. Here we show that the information backflow that quantifies memory effects can be enhanced when the particle is subjected to uncorrelated static or dynamic disorder. The presence of disorder in the system leads to localization effects in 1-dimensional quantum walks. We shown that it is possible to infer about the nature of localization in position space by monitoring the information backflow in the reduced system. Further, we study other useful properties of quantum walk such as entanglement, interference and its connection to quantum non-Markovianity.

A Rout to Protect Quantum Gates constructed via quantum walks from Noises

The continuous-time quantum walk on a one-dimensional graph of odd number of sites with an on-site potential at the center is studied. We show that such a quantum-walk system can construct an X-gate of a single qubit as well as a control gate for two qubits, when the potential is much larger than the hopping strength. We investigate the decoherence effect and find that the coherence time can be enhanced by either increasing the number of sites on the graph or the ratio of the potential to the hopping strength, which is expected to motivate the design of the quantum gate with long coherence time. We also suggest several experimental proposals to realize such a system.

Experimental two-dimensional quantum walk on a photonic chip

Quantum walks, in virtue of the coherent superposition and quantum interference, have exponential superiority over their classical counterpart in applications of quantum searching and quantum simulation. The quantum-enhanced power is highly related to the state space of quantum walks, which can be expanded by enlarging the photon number and/or the dimensions of the evolution network, but the former is considerably challenging due to probabilistic generation of single photons and multiplicative loss. We demonstrate a two-dimensional continuous-time quantum walk by using the external geometry of photonic waveguide arrays, rather than the inner degree of freedoms of photons. Using femtosecond laser direct writing, we construct a large-scale three-dimensional structure that forms a two-dimensional lattice with up to 49 × 49 nodes on a photonic chip. We demonstrate spatial two-dimensional quantum walks using heralded single photons and single photon-level imaging. We analyze the quantum transport properties via observing the ballistic evolution pattern and the variance profile, which agree well with simulation results. We further reveal the transient nature that is the unique feature for quantum walks of beyond one dimension. An architecture that allows a quantum walk to freely evolve in all directions and at a large scale, combining with defect and disorder control, may bring up powerful and versatile quantum walk machines for classically intractable problems.
