Efficient information for recognizing pain in facial expressions

BACKGROUND

The face as a visual stimulus is a reliable source of information for judging the pain experienced by others. Until now, most studies investigating the facial expression of pain have used a descriptive method (i.e. Facial Action Coding System). However, the facial features that are relevant for the observer in the identification of the expression of pain remain largely unknown despite the strong medical impact that misjudging pain can have on patients' well-being.

METHODS

Here, we investigated this question by applying the Bubbles method. Fifty healthy volunteers were asked to categorize facial expressions (the six basic emotions, pain and neutrality) displayed in stimuli obtained from a previously validated set and presented for 500 ms each. To determine the critical areas of the face used in this categorization task, the faces were partly masked based on random sampling of regions of the stimuli at different spatial frequency ranges.

RESULTS

Results show that accurate pain discrimination relies mostly on the frown lines and the mouth. Finally, an ideal observer analysis indicated that the use of the frown lines in human observers could not be attributed to the objective 'informativeness' of this area.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on a recent study suggesting that this area codes for the affective dimension of pain, we propose that the visual system has evolved to focus primarily on the facial cues that signal the aversiveness of pain, consistent with the social role of facial expressions in the communication of potential threats.

Dynamics of intrinsic electrophysiological properties in spinal cord neurones

The spinal cord is engaged in a wide variety of functions including generation of motor acts, coding of sensory information and autonomic control. The intrinsic electrophysiological properties of spinal neurones represent a fundamental building block of the spinal circuits executing these tasks. The intrinsic response properties of spinal neurones--determined by the particular set and distribution of voltage sensitive channels and their dynamic non-linear interactions--show a high degree of functional specialisation as reflected by the differences of intrinsic response patterns in different cell types. Specialised, cell specific electrophysiological phenotypes gradually differentiate during development and are continuously adjusted in the adult animal by metabotropic synaptic interactions and activity-dependent plasticity to meet a broad range of functional demands.

Discrimination of vibrotactile frequencies in a delayed pair comparison task

This study quantified human short-term-memory decay functions for delayed vibrotactile frequency discriminations. Subjects indicated which of two successive intervals contained the higher or lower frequency of a pair separated by delay periods of 0.5-30 sec. Performance decreased as a function of length of delay and was higher when delays were unfilled than when they were filled with a backwards-counting task. This interpolated task may have interfered with rehearsal of a coded representation of the remembered vibrotactile frequency. A change in decay rate after 5-sec delays suggests a switch from reliance on sensory memory to the coded frequency representation. Performance and decay rate depended on presentation order of higher or lower frequency within pairs. Reciprocal performance asymmetries seen in high-versus low-frequency ranges did not result from simple response bias.

Dental pain: self-observations by a neurophysiologist

This is a description of a dentally trained neurophysiologist's first-hand experience of the slow and progressive deterioration of the pulp of one of his posterior teeth. He describes his sensations throughout the course of the pulpal pathosis and his experience as a patient undergoing endodontic treatment for the first time. His subjective experiences are put into the context of the current understanding of the physiology of pain.

Primary afferent and sacral dorsal horn neuron responses to vaginal probing in the cat

An analysis was made of primary afferent and dorsal horn neuron responses to stimulation of genitalia of female cats. Three types of primary afferents responded to vaginal probing. The most common type responded maximally to the on- and off-ramps of non-noxious pressure applied directly to the clitoris. A second type responded similar but to surrounding labia mucosa. The third type showed a tonic discharge during deep vaginal-cervical probing. None of the primary afferents that responded to vaginal probing exhibited after-responses to any stimulus. However, a majority (76%) of wide dynamic range dorsal horn neurons showed increased rates of firing that outlasted the duration of vaginal probing by at least 28 sec. No other type of dorsal horn neuron responded in this manner. It appears that after-responses of wide dynamic range neurons to vaginal stimulation cannot be attributed to after-responses of primary afferents or to supraspinal mechanisms but are produced by mechanisms within the spinal cord.

Tactile short-term memory

Subjects tried to recall the location of a tactile stimulus on the underside of the forearm after delays of 0, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45 and 60 sec. When “rehearsal” was prevented by requiring subjects to count backwards during the delay, accuracy of recall decreased systematically reaching an asymptote after 45 sec. When subjects were left free to “rehearse,” this did not affect the decline in accuracy over the first 10 sec. Between 10 and 15 sec. there was a significant increase in accuracy followed by a slow decline which had not reached asymptote by 60 sec. It is suggested that tactile STM (short-term memory) depends on two processes, a fading sensory trace which is unaffected by distraction and a less labile system which does not appear to be verbal but which depends on “rehearsal.”
