Thermally stable single-atom platinum-on-ceria catalysts via atom trapping

Stabilizing Fe Single Atoms on Rutile-TiO2(110) Surface Via Atomic Substitution

Stable anchoring of dispersed metal atoms through either surface adsorption or lattice substitution on support surfaces is a prerequisite for highly efficient catalytic performance. Atomic-level insights into these processes are necessary to understand the metal-support interactions. Here, we identify multiple Fe single-atom configurations on the rutile-TiO2(110) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT). Our results show that an Fe atom can either adsorb on a surface O site (configuration I) or stably substitute a surface lattice Ti atom (configuration II). A transformation from configuration I to configuration II can be induced by STM manipulation. Furthermore, the substitutional Fe atom can capture an additional Fe atom to form a dual Fe-Fe complex (configuration III). DFT calculations reveal that these Fe species contribute different states in either the bandgap or the conduction band. These atomistic insights pave the way for interrogating the integrated performance of nonprecious, TiO2-supported Fe single-atom catalysts.

Elucidating Synergies of Single-Atom Catalysts in a Model Thin Film Photoelectrocatalyst to Maximize Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Realization of the full potential of single-atom photoelectrocatalysts in sustainable energy generation requires careful consideration of the design of the host material. Here, a comprehensive methodology for the rational design of photoelectrocatalysts using anodic titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofilm as a model platform is presented. The properties of these nanofilms are precisely engineered to elucidate synergies across structural, chemical, optoelectronic, and electrochemical properties to maximize the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). These findings clearly demonstrate that thicker TiO2 nanofilms in anatase phase with pits on the surface can accommodate single-atom platinum catalysts in an optimal configuration to increase HER performance. It is also evident that the electrolyte temperature can further enhance HER output through thermochemical effect. A judicious design incorporating all these factors into one system gives rise to a ten-fold HER enhancement. However, the reusability of the host photoelectrocatalyst is limited by the leaching of the Pt atom, worsening HER. Density-functional theory calculations have provided insights into the mechanism underlying the experimental observations in terms of moderate hydrogen adsorption and enhanced gas generation. This improved understanding of the critical factors determining HER performance in a model photoelectrocatalyst paves the way for future advances in scalable and translatable photoelectrocatalyst technologies.

Boosting the Stability of Subnanometer Pt Catalysts by the Presence of Framework Indium(III) Sites in Zeolite

Subnanometer metal clusters show advantages over conventional metal nanoparticles in numerous catalytic reactions owing to their high percentage of exposed surface sites, abundance of under-coordinated metal sites and unique electronic structures. However, the applications of subnanometer metal clusters in high-temperature catalytic reactions (>600 °C) are still hindered, because of their low stability under harsh reaction conditions. In this work, we have developed a zeolite-confined bimetallic PtIn catalyst with exceptionally high stability against sintering. A combination of experimental and theoretical studies shows that the isolated framework In(III) species serve as the anchoring sites for Pt species, precluding the migration and sintering of Pt species in the oxidative atmosphere at ≥650 °C. The catalyst comprising subnanometer PtIn clusters exhibits long-term stability of >1000 h during a cyclic reaction-regeneration test for ethane dehydrogenation reaction.

A General Strategy Based on Hetero-Charge Coupling Effect for Constructing Single-Atom Sites

Single-atom catalysts have emerged as cutting-edge hotspots in the field of material science owing to their excellent catalytic performance brought about by well-defined metal single-atom sites (M SASs). However, huge challenges still lie in achieving the rational design and precise synthesis of M SASs. Herein, we report a novel synthesis strategy based on the hetero-charge coupling effect (HCCE) to prepare M SASs loaded on N and S co-doped porous carbon (M1/NSC). The proposed strategy was widely applied to prepare 17 types of M1/NSC composed of single or multi-metal with the integrated regulation of the coordination environment and electronic structure, exhibiting good universality and flexible adjustability. Furthermore, this strategy provided a low-cost method of efficiently synthesizing M1/NSC with high yields, that can produce more than 50 g catalyst at one time, which is key to large-scale production. Among various as-prepared unary M1/NSC (M can be Fe, Co, Ni, V, Cr, Mn, Mo, Pd, W, Re, Ir, Pt, or Bi) catalysts, Fe1/NSC delivered excellent performance for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to NH3 with high NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 86.6 % and high NH3 yield rate of 1.50 mg h-1 mgcat. -1 at -0.6 V vs. RHE. Even using Fe1/NSC as a cathode in a Zn-nitrate battery, it exhibited a high open circuit voltage of 1.756 V and high energy density of 4.42 mW cm-2 with good cycling stability.

Optically selective catalyst design with minimized thermal emission for facilitating photothermal catalysis

Converting solar energy into fuels is pursued as an attractive route to reduce dependence on fossil fuel. In this context, photothermal catalysis is a very promising approach through converting photons into heat to drive catalytic reactions. There are mainly three key factors that govern the photothermal catalysis performance: maximized solar absorption, minimized thermal emission and excellent catalytic property of catalyst. However, the previous research has focused on improving solar absorption and catalytic performance of catalyst, largely neglected the optimization of thermal emission. Here, we demonstrate an optically selective catalyst based Ti3C2Tx Janus design, that enables minimized thermal emission, maximized solar absorption and good catalytic activity simultaneously, thereby achieving excellent photothermal catalytic performance. When applied to Sabatier reaction and reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) as demonstrations, we obtain an approximately 300% increase in catalytic yield through reducing the thermal emission of catalyst by ~70% under the same irradiation intensity. It is worth noting that the CO2 methanation yield reaches 3317.2 mmol gRu-1 h-1 at light power of 2 W cm-2, setting a performance record among catalysts without active supports. We expect that this design opens up a new pathway for the development of high-performance photothermal catalysts.

Catalytic Upcycling of Polyolefins

The large production volumes of commodity polyolefins (specifically, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and poly(vinyl chloride)), in conjunction with their low unit values and multitude of short-term uses, have resulted in a significant and pressing waste management challenge. Only a small fraction of these polyolefins is currently mechanically recycled, with the rest being incinerated, accumulating in landfills, or leaking into the natural environment. Since polyolefins are energy-rich materials, there is considerable interest in recouping some of their chemical value while simultaneously motivating more responsible end-of-life management. An emerging strategy is catalytic depolymerization, in which a portion of the C-C bonds in the polyolefin backbone is broken with the assistance of a catalyst and, in some cases, additional small molecule reagents. When the products are small molecules or materials with higher value in their own right, or as chemical feedstocks, the process is called upcycling. This review summarizes recent progress for four major catalytic upcycling strategies: hydrogenolysis, (hydro)cracking, tandem processes involving metathesis, and selective oxidation. Key considerations include macromolecular reaction mechanisms relative to small molecule mechanisms, catalyst design for macromolecular transformations, and the effect of process conditions on product selectivity. Metrics for describing polyolefin upcycling are critically evaluated, and an outlook for future advances is described.

Unveiling the Stability of Encapsulated Pt Catalysts Using Nanocrystals and Atomic Layer Deposition

Platinum exhibits desirable catalytic properties, but it is scarce and expensive. Optimizing its use in key applications such as emission control catalysis is important to reduce our reliance on such a rare element. Supported Pt nanoparticles (NPs) used in emission control systems deactivate over time because of particle growth in sintering processes. In this work, we shed light on the stability against sintering of Pt NPs supported on and encapsulated in Al2O3 using a combination of nanocrystal catalysts and atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques. We find that small amounts of alumina overlayers created by ALD on preformed Pt NPs can stabilize supported Pt catalysts, significantly reducing deactivation caused by sintering, as previously observed by others. Combining theoretical and experimental insights, we correlate this behavior to the decreased propensity of oxidized Pt species to undergo Ostwald ripening phenomena because of the physical barrier imposed by the alumina overlayers. Furthermore, we find that highly stable catalysts can present an abundance of under-coordinated Pt sites after restructuring of both Pt particles and alumina overlayers at a high temperature (800 °C) in C3H6 oxidation conditions. The enhanced stability significantly improves the Pt utilization efficiency after accelerated aging treatments, with encapsulated Pt catalysts reaching reaction rates more than two times greater than those of a control supported Pt catalyst.

Unveiling Highly Sensitive Active Site in Atomically Dispersed Gold Catalysts for Enhanced Ethanol Dehydrogenation

Developing a desirable ethanol dehydrogenation process necessitates a highly efficient and selective catalyst with low cost. Herein, we show that the "complex active site" consisting of atomically dispersed Au atoms with the neighboring oxygen vacancies (Vo) and undercoordinated cation on oxide supports can be prepared and display unique catalytic properties for ethanol dehydrogenation. The "complex active site" Au-Vo-Zr3+ on Au1/ZrO2 exhibits the highest H2 production rate, with above 37,964 mol H2 per mol Au per hour (385 g H2 g Au - 1 ${{\rm{g}}_{{\rm{Au}}}^{ - 1} }$  h-1) at 350 °C, which is 3.32, 2.94 and 15.0 times higher than Au1/CeO2, Au1/TiO2, and Au1/Al2O3, respectively. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, we demonstrate the structural sensitivity of these complex sites by assessing their selectivity and activity in ethanol dehydrogenation. Our study sheds new light on the design and development of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for ethanol dehydrogenation. Fundamentally, atomic-level catalyst design by colocalizing catalytically active metal atoms forming a structure-sensitive "complex site", is a crucial way to advance from heterogeneous catalysis to molecular catalysis. Our study advanced the understanding of the structure sensitivity of the active site in atomically dispersed catalysts.

Highly Active Oxidation Catalysts through Confining Pd Clusters on CeO2 Nano-Islands

CeO2-supported noble metal clusters are attractive catalytic materials for several applications. However, their atomic dispersion under oxidizing reaction conditions often leads to catalyst deactivation. In this study, the noble metal cluster formation threshold is rationally adjusted by using a mixed CeO2-Al2O3 support. The preferential location of Pd on CeO2 islands leads to a high local surface noble metal concentration and promotes the in situ formation of small Pd clusters at a rather low noble metal loading (0.5 wt %), which are shown to be the active species for CO conversion at low temperatures. As elucidated by complementary in situ/operando techniques, the spatial separation of CeO2 islands on Al2O3 confines the mobility of Pd, preventing the full redispersion or the formation of larger noble metal particles and maintaining a high CO oxidation activity at low temperatures. In a broader perspective, this approach to more efficiently use the noble metal can be transferred to further systems and reactions in heterogeneous catalysis.

Tuning catalytic performance of platinum single atoms by choosing the shape of cerium dioxide supports

The local coordination environment of single atom catalysts (SACs) often determines their catalytic performance. To understand these metal-support interactions, we prepared Pt SACs on cerium dioxide (CeO2) cubes, octahedra and rods, with well-structured exposed crystal facets. The CeO2 crystals were characterized by SEM, TEM, pXRD, and N2 sorption, confirming the shape-selective synthesis, identical bulk structure, and variations in specific surface area, respectively. EPR, XPS, TEM and XANES measurements showed differences in the oxygen vacancy density following the trend rods > octahedra > cubes. AC-HAADF-STEM, XPS and CO-DRIFTS measurements confirmed the presence of only single Pt2+ sites, with different surface platinum surface concentrations. We then compared the performance of the three catalysts in ammonia borane hydrolysis. Precise monitoring of reaction kinetics between 30-80 °C gave Arrhenius plots with hundreds of data points. All plots showed a clear inflection point, the temperature of which (rods > octahedra > cubes) correlates to the energy barrier of ammonia borane diffusion to the Pt sites. These activity differences reflect variations in the - facet dependent - degree of stabilization of intermediates by surface oxygen lone pairs and surface-metal binding strength. Our results show how choosing the right macroscopic support shape can give control over single atom catalysed reactions on the microscopic scale.

Unravelling the origin of reaction-driven aggregation and fragmentation of atomically dispersed Pt catalyst on ceria support

Metal-support interaction plays a crucial role in governing the stability and activity of atomically dispersed platinum catalysts on ceria support. The migration and aggregation of platinum atoms during the catalytic reaction leads to the redistribution of active sites. In this study, by utilizing a multimodal characterization scheme, we observed the aggregation of platinum atoms at high temperatures under reverse water gas shift reaction conditions and the subsequent fragmentation of platinum clusters, forming "single atoms" upon cooling. Theoretical simulations of both effects uncovered the roles of carbon monoxide binding on perimeter Pt sites in the clusters and hydrogen coverage in the aggregation and fragmentation mechanisms. This study highlights the complex effects of adsorbate and supports interactions with metal sites in Pt/ceria catalysts that govern their structural transformations under in situ conditions.

Atomistic understanding of enhanced selectivity in photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde using graphitic carbon nitride loaded with single copper atoms

The loading of graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) with transition metals has received significant attention for efficient light-driven catalysis. However, the contribution of the loaded metals to enhanced performance remains unclear. In this study, Cu is loaded onto gCN to understand how photocatalytic activity is regulated by the loaded metals. Loading gCN with 3 wt% of Cu increases the electron population by 8.1 and 4.6 times under UV (λ < 370 nm) and visible light (390 < λ < 740 nm), respectively. This sample shows nearly 100% selectivity for oxidizing benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and a high yield-to-power ratio, reaching 0.35 mmol g-1 h-1 W-1. The loaded Cu species exist as single atoms with a +1-oxidation state. Each Cu+ cation is coordinated to two (at 3 wt% Cu) or four (at 6 wt% Cu) N atoms within the cavity of the gCN framework. Doubling the Cu loading results in a smaller electron population and coordinatively more saturated Cu+ cations, making it catalytically less reactive. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that Cu+ cations produce filled mid-gap states above the valence band, which function as hole traps and hence oxidation centers. The Cu+ cation and the neighboring N atoms are electron-depletion and electron-accumulation sites due to Cu → N electron transfer, making it highly reactive for oxidative transformations via the hole transfer pathway. The role of Cu as a hole-transfer site updates the received understanding that surface-loaded Cu serves as an electron-accumulation site. A strong correlation is observed between the electron population at steady-state and the product yield, indicating that it could serve as a promising performance indicator for the design of future photocatalysts.

A CeO2 (100) surface reconstruction unveiled by in situ STEM and particle swarm optimization techniques

The reconstruction of the polar CeO2 (100) surface has been a subject of long-standing debates due to its complexity and the limited availability of experimental data. Herein, we successfully reveal a CeO2 (100)-(4 × 6) surface reconstruction by combining in situ spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, density functional theory calculations, and a particle swarm optimization-based algorithm for structure searching. We have further elucidated the stabilizing mechanism of the reconstructed structure, which involves the splitting of the filled Ce(4f) states and the mixing of the lower-lying ones with the O(2p) orbitals, as evidenced by the projected density of states. We also reveal that the surface chemisorption properties toward water molecules, an important step in numerous heterogeneous catalytic reactions, are enhanced. These insights into the distinct properties of ceria surface pave the way for performance improvements of ceria in a wide range of applications.

Understanding the role of supported Rh atoms and clusters during hydroformylation and CO hydrogenation reactions with in situ/operando XAS and DRIFT spectroscopy

Supported Rh single-atoms and clusters on CeO2, MgO, and ZrO2 were investigated as catalysts for hydroformylation of ethylene to propionaldehyde and CO hydrogenation to methanol/ethanol with in situ/operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Under hydroformylation reaction conditions, operando spectroscopic investigations unravel the presence of both single atoms and clusters and detected at first propanal and then methanol. We find that the formation of methanol is associated with CO hydrogenation over Rh clusters which was further confirmed under CO hydrogenation conditions at elevated pressure. The activity of catalysts synthesized via a precipitation (PP) method over various supports towards the hydroformylation reaction follows the order: Rh/ZrO2 > Rh/CeO2 > Rh/MgO. Comparing Rh/CeO2 catalysts synthesized via different methods, catalysts prepared by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) showed catalytic activity for the hydroformylation reaction at lower temperatures (413 K), whereas catalysts prepared by wet impregnation (WI) showed the highest stability. These results not only provide fundamental insights into the atomistic level of industrially relevant reactions but also pave the way for a rational design of new catalysts in the future.

Pinpointing the Cl Coordination Effect on Mn-N3-Cl Moiety Toward Boosting Reaction Kinetics and Suppressing Shuttle Effect in Li-S Batteries

Single atom catalysts (SACs) are highly favored in Li-S batteries due to their excellent performance in promoting the conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and inhibiting their shuttling. However, the intricate and interrelated microstructures pose a challenge in deciphering the correlation between the chemical environment surrounding the active site and its catalytic activity. Here, a novel SAC featuring a distinctive Mn-N3-Cl moiety anchored on B, N co-doped carbon nanotubes (MnN3Cl@BNC) is synthesized. Subsequently, the selective removal of the Cl ligands while inheriting other microstructures is performed to elucidate the effect of Cl coordination on catalytic activity. The Cl coordination effectively enhances the electron cloud density of the Mn-N3-Cl moiety, reducing the band gap and increasing the adsorption capacity and redox kinetics of LiPSs. As a modified separator for Li-S batteries, MnN3Cl@BNC exhibits high capacities of 1384.1 and 743 mAh g-1 at 0.1 and 3C, with a decay rate of only 0.06% per cycle over 700 cycles at 1 C, which is much better than that of MnN3OH@BNC. This study reveals that Cl coordination positively contributes to improving the catalytic activity of the Mn-N3-Cl moiety, providing a fresh perspective for the design of high-performance SACs.

Toward Functionality and Deactivation of Metal-Single-Atom in Heterogeneous Photocatalysts

Single-atom heterogeneous catalysts (SAHCs) provide an enticing platform for understanding catalyst structure-property-performance relationships. The 100% atom utilization and adjustable local coordination configurations make it easy to probe reaction mechanisms at the atomic level. However, the progressive deactivation of metal-single-atom (MSA) with high surface energy leads to frequent limitations on their commercial viability. This review focuses on the atomistic-sensitive reactivity and atomistic-progressive deactivation of MSA to provide a unifying framework for specific functionality and potential deactivation drivers of MSA, thereby bridging function, purpose-modification structure-performance insights with the atomistic-progressive deactivation for sustainable structure-property-performance accessibility. The dominant functionalization of atomically precise MSA acting on properties and reactivity encompassing precise photocatalytic reactions is first systematically explored. Afterward, a detailed analysis of various deactivation modes of MSA and strategies to enhance their durability is presented, providing valuable insights into the design of SAHCs with deactivation-resistant stability. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives of SAHCs toward industrialization, anticipating shedding some light on the next stage of atom-economic chemical/energy transformations are presented.

Anchoring PdOx clusters on defective alumina for improved catalytic methane oxidation

Evolution of the Pd active centers in size and spatial distribution leads to an irreversible deactivation in many high-temperature catalytic processes. This research demonstrates the use of a defective alumina (Al2O3-x) as catalyst support to anchor Pd atoms and suppress the growth of Pd clusters in catalytic methane oxidation. A combination of operando spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide insights into the evolution of Pd species and reveals distinct catalytic methane oxidation mechanisms on Pd single atoms, clusters, and nanoparticles (NPs). Among these Pd species, the cluster active centers are found to be the most favorable participants in methane oxidation due to their high dispersion, high content of Pd2+ oxidation state, and resistance to deactivation by carbonates, bicarbonates, and water. The Pd/Al2O3-x catalyst shows increased stability with respect to a Pd/Al2O3 counterpart during simulated aging in alternating reducing and oxidizing conditions due to stronger interactions with the support. This study demonstrates that defect engineering of non-reducible supports can constrain the evolution of active centers, which holds promising potential for widespread utilization across diverse industrial catalytic processes, including various hydrogenation and oxidation reactions.

Facilely Fabricated Single-Site Ptδ+-O(OH)x- Species Associated with Alkali on Zirconia Exhibiting Superior Catalytic Oxidation Reactivity

Fabrication of robust isolated atom catalysts has been a research hotspot in the environment catalysis field for the removal of various contaminants, but there are still challenges in improving the reactivity and stability. Herein, through facile doping alkali metals in Pt catalyst on zirconia (Pt-Na/ZrO2), the atomically dispersed Ptδ+-O(OH)x- associated with alkali metal via oxygen bridge was successfully fabricated. This novel catalyst presented remarkably higher CO and hydrocarbon (HCs: C3H8, C7H8, C3H6, and CH4) oxidation activity than its counterpart (Pt/ZrO2). Systematically direct and solid evidence from experiments and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the fabricated electron-rich Ptδ+-O(OH)x- related to Na species rather than the original Ptδ+-O(OH)x-, serving as the catalytically active species, can readily react with CO adsorbed on Ptδ+ to produce CO2 with significantly decreasing energy barrier in the rate-determining step from 1.97 to 0.93 eV. Additionally, owing to the strongly adsorbed and activated water by Na species, those fabricated single-site Ptδ+-O(OH)x- linked by Na species could be easily regenerated during the oxidation reaction, thus considerably boosting its oxidation reactivity and durability. Such facile construction of the alkali ion-linked active hydroxyl group was also realized by Li and K modification which could guide to the design of efficient catalysts for the removal of CO and HCs from industrial exhaust.

Stabilizing Few-Atom Platinum Clusters by Zinc Single-Atom-Glue for Efficient Anti-Markovnikov Alkene Hydrosilylation

Few-atom metal clusters (FAMCs) exhibit superior performance in catalyzing complex molecular transformations due to their special spatial environments and electronic states, compared to single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, achieving the efficient and accurate synthesis of FAMCs while avoiding the formation of other species, such as nanoparticles and SACs, still remains challenges. Herein, we report a two-step strategy for synthesis of few-atom platinum (Pt) clusters by predeposition of zinc single-atom-glue (Zn1) on MgO nanosheets (Ptn-Zn1/MgO), where FAMCs can be obtained over a wide range of Pt contents (0.09 to 1.45 wt %). Zn atoms can act as Lewis acidic sites to allow electron transfer between Zn and Pt through bridging O atoms, which play a crucial role in the formation and stabilization of few-atom Pt clusters. Ptn-Zn1/MgO exhibited a high selectivity of 93 % for anti-Markovnikov alkene hydrosilylation. Moreover, an excellent activity with a turnover frequency of up to 1.6×104 h-1 can be achieved, exceeding most of the reported Pt SACs. Further theoretical studies revealed that the Pt atoms in Ptn-Zn1/MgO possess moderate steric hindrance, which enables high selectivity and activity for hydrosilylation. This work presents some guidelines for utilizing atomic-scale species to increase the synthesis efficiency and precision of FAMCs.

Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene over Pt/CeO2 Catalysts: A Double-Edged Sword Effect of Strong Metal-Support Interaction

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), which has drawn widespread attention in heterogeneous catalysis, is thought to significantly affect the catalytic performance for volatile organic chemical (VOC) abatement. In the present study, strong interactions between platinum and ceria are constructed by modulating the oxygen vacancy concentration of CeO2 through a NaBH4 reduction method. For a catalyst with higher content of oxygen vacancy, more electrons would transfer from ceria to Pt, which is attributed to the stronger effect of SMSI. The obtained electron-richer Pt sites exhibit higher ability for toluene activation, contributing to better performance for toluene oxidation. On the other hand, the stronger metal-support interaction would facilitate CeOx species migrating to the Pt nanoparticle surface and forming an encapsulated structure. Smaller Pt dispersion leads to fewer sites for toluene adsorption and activation, which is to the disadvantage of the reaction. Therefore, taking the negative and positive effects together, the Pt/CeO2-0.5 catalyst has the highest catalytic performance for toluene abatement. Our study provides new insights into strong metal-support interaction on toluene oxidation and contributes to designing noble metal catalysts for VOC abatement.

Bottom-Up Synthesis of Platinum Dual-Atom Catalysts on Cerium Oxide

We present here the synthesis and performance of dual-atom catalysts (DACs), analogous to well-known single-atom catalysts (SACs). DACs feature sites containing pairs of metal atoms and can outperform SACs due to their additional binding possibilities. Yet quantifying the improved catalytic activity in terms of proximity effects remains difficult, as it requires both high-resolution kinetic data and an understanding of the reaction pathways. Here, we use an automated bubble counter setup for comparing the catalytic performance of ceria-supported platinum SACs and DACs in ammonia borane hydrolysis. The catalysts were synthesized by wet impregnation and characterized using SEM, HAADF-STEM, XRD, XPS, and CO-DRIFTS. High-precision kinetic studies of ammonia borane hydrolysis in the presence of SACs show two temperature-dependent regions, with a transition point at 43 °C. Conversely, the DACs show only one regime. We show that this is because DACs preorganize both ammonia borane and water at the dual-atom active site. The additional proximal Pt atom improves the reaction rate 3-fold and enables faster reactions at lower temperatures. We suggest that the DACs enable the activation of the water-O-H bond as well as increase the hydrogen spillover effect due to the adjacent Pt site. Interestingly, using ammonia borane hydrolysis as a benchmark reaction gives further insight into hydrogen spillover mechanisms, above what is known from the CO oxidation studies.

Insight into the Dynamic Nature of the Pt-CeO2 Interface in Dry Reforming of Methane

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are attractive in one-carbon (C1) chemistry because of their high atom efficiency. However, it is a great challenge for understanding the dynamic roles of SACs under operating conditions. Here, isolated Pt atoms trapped on defective CeO2 surface are investigated by experiments, especially operando techniques, which offers basic understanding of the nature and dynamic evolution of the Pt-CeO2 interface in dry reforming of methane (DRM). The Pt-Olattice configuration is highly active for CH4 dissociation at the expense of the Olattice atoms, which in turn promotes the H-assisted dissociation of CO2. The transformation of Pt atoms between positive and metallic states is driven by the DRM reaction, which is essential for rendering highly efficient catalysis. The dynamic evolution of Pt atoms favors to eliminate the reactive intermediates, such as carbonates and formates. The dynamic nature of the Pt-CeO2 interface in the DRM reaction shows a similar picture to the Yin and Yang transformation in ancient Chinese Tai Ji wisdom.

Strategies for the Preparation of Single-Atom Catalysts Using Low-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks

Rational Design of Dynamic Interface Water Evolution on Turing Electrocatalyst toward the Industrial Hydrogen Production

Manipulating the structural and kinetic dissociation processes of water at the catalyst-electrolyte interface is vital for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) at industrial current density. This is seldom actualized due to the intricacies of the electrochemical reaction interface. Herein, this work introduces a rapid, nonequilibrium cooling technique for synthesizing ternary Turing catalysts with short-range ordered structures (denoted as FeNiRu/C). These advanced structures empower the FeNiRu/C to exhibit excellent HER performance in 1 m KOH with an ultralow overpotential of 6.5 and 166.2 mV at 10 and 1000 mA cm-2, respectively, and a specific activity 7.3 times higher than that of Pt/C. Comprehensive mechanistic analyses reveal that abundant atomic species form asymmetric atomic electric fields on the catalyst surface inducing a directed evolution and the dissociation process of interfacial H2O molecules. In addition, the locally topologized structure effectively mitigates the high hydrogen coverage of the active site induced by the high current density. The establishment of the relationship between free water population and HER activity provides a new paradigm for the design of industrially relevant high performance alkaline HER catalysts.

Atomic Pt Sites Anchored in the Interface between Grains on Vacancy-Enriched CeO2 Nanosheets: One-Step Precursor Combustion Synthesis

Atomic metal catalysts have unique electronic, structural, and catalytic properties, which are widely used in the field of catalysis. However, designing new simple synthesis methods to fabricate atomic metal catalysts is a challenge in catalytic applications. Herein, a one-step precursor combustion strategy is presented that starts directly from precursors of metal salts, using a spontaneous combustion process convert platinum nitrate to atomic Pt sites. The atomic Pt sites with low valence are anchored in the formed interface between grains on vacancy-enriched CeO2 nanosheets. The obtained Pt/CeO2-2 catalyst exhibits much higher three-way catalytic activities at low temperatures than Pt/CeO2-C catalysts prepared using the traditional impregnation method. Density functional theory calculations show that the generated lower valent Pt atoms in the CeO2 interface promote catalytic activity through reducing the energy barrier, and lead to an overall improvement of three-way catalytic activities. This facile strategy provides new insights into the study of the properties and applications of atomic noble metal catalysts.

Sulfur Modified Carbon-Based Single-Atom Catalysts for Electrocatalytic Reactions

Efficient and sustainable energy development is a powerful tool for addressing the energy and environmental crises. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received high attention for their extremely high atom utilization efficiency and excellent catalytic activity, and have broad application prospects in energy development and chemical production. M-N4 is an active center model with clear catalytic activity, but its catalytic properties such as catalytic activity, selectivity, and durability need to be further improved. Adjustment of the coordination environment of the central metal by incorporating heteroatoms (e.g., sulfur) is an effective and feasible modification method. This paper describes the precise synthetic methods for introducing sulfur atoms into M-N4 and controlling whether they are directly coordinated with the central metal to form a specific coordination configuration, the application of sulfur-doped carbon-based single-atom catalysts in electrocatalytic reactions such as ORR, CO2RR, HER, OER, and other electrocatalytic reaction are systematically reviewed. Meanwhile, the effect of the tuning of the electronic structure and ligand configuration parameters of the active center due to doped sulfur atoms with the improvement of catalytic performance is introduced by combining different characterization and testing methods. Finally, several opinions on development of sulfur-doped carbon-based SACs are put forward.

Atomically Dispersed Metal Catalysts for the Conversion of CO2 into High-Value C2+ Chemicals

The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added chemicals with two or more carbons (C2+) is a promising strategy that cannot only mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions but also reduce the excessive dependence on fossil feedstocks. In recent years, atomically dispersed metal catalysts (ADCs), including single-atom catalysts (SACs), dual-atom catalysts (DACs), and single-cluster catalysts (SCCs), emerged as attractive candidates for CO2 fixation reactions due to their unique properties, such as the maximum utilization of active sites, tunable electronic structure, the efficient elucidation of catalytic mechanism, etc. This review provides an overview of significant progress in the synthesis and characterization of ADCs utilized in photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 toward high-value C2+ compounds. To provide insights for designing efficient ADCs toward the C2+ chemical synthesis originating from CO2, the key factors that influence the catalytic activity and selectivity are highlighted. Finally, the relevant challenges and opportunities are discussed to inspire new ideas for the generation of CO2-based C2+ products over ADCs.

Hidden Impurities Generate False Positives in Single Atom Catalyst Imaging

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are an emerging class of materials, leveraging maximum atom utilization and distinctive structural and electronic properties to bridge heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Direct imaging methods, such as aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, are commonly applied to confirm the atomic dispersion of active sites. However, interpretations of data from these techniques can be challenging due to simultaneous contributions to intensity from impurities introduced during synthesis processes, as well as any variation in position relative to the focal plane of the electron beam. To address this matter, this paper presents a comprehensive study on two representative SACs containing isolated nickel or copper atoms. Spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, were employed to prove the high metal dispersion of the catalytic atoms. Employing scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging combined with single-atom-sensitive electron energy loss spectroscopy, we scrutinized thin specimens of the catalysts to provide an unambiguous chemical identification of the observed single-atom species and thereby distinguish impurities from active sites at the single-atom level. Overall, the study underscores the complexity of SACs characterization and establishes the importance of the use of spectroscopy in tandem with imaging at atomic resolution to fully and reliably characterize single-atom catalysts.

Capture of single Ag atoms through high-temperature-induced crystal plane reconstruction

The "terminal hydroxyl group anchoring mechanism" has been studied on metal oxides (Al2O3, CeO2) as well as a variety of noble and transition metals (Ag, Pt, Pd, Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Co) in a number of generalized studies, but there is still a gap in how to regulate the content of terminal hydroxyl groups to influence the dispersion of the active species and thus to achieve optimal catalytic performance. Herein, we utilized AlOOH as a precursor for γ-Al2O3 and induced the transformation of the exposed crystal face of γ-Al2O3 from (110) to (100) by controlling the calcination temperature to generate more terminal hydroxyl groups to anchor Ag species. Experimental results combined with AIMD and DFT show that temperature can drive the atomic rearrangement on the (110) crystal face, thereby forming a structure similar to the atomic arrangement of the (100) crystal face. This resulted in the formation of more terminal hydroxyl groups during the high-temperature calcination of the support (Al-900), which can capture Ag species to form single-atom dispersions, and ultimately develop a stable and efficient single-atom Ag-based catalyst.

Surface-Diffusion-Induced Amorphization of Pt Nanoparticles over Ru Oxide Boost Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Phase transformation offers an alternative strategy for the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases, allowing us to further explore their unique properties and promising applications. Herein, we first observed the amorphization of Pt nanoparticles on the RuO2 surface by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the low energy barrier and thermodynamic driving force for Pt atoms transferring from the Pt cluster to the RuO2 surface to form amorphous Pt. Remarkably, the as-synthesized amorphous Pt/RuO2 exhibits 14.2 times enhanced mass activity compared to commercial RuO2 catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Water electrolyzer with amorphous Pt/RuO2 achieves 1.0 A cm-2 at 1.70 V and remains stable at 200 mA cm-2 for over 80 h. The amorphous Pt layer not only optimized the *O binding but also enhanced the antioxidation ability of amorphous Pt/RuO2, thereby boosting the activity and stability for the OER.

Strategies Toward High Selectivity, Activity, and Stability of Single-Atom Catalysts

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) hold immense promise in facilitating the rational use of metal resources and achieving atomic economy due to their exceptional atom-utilization efficiency and distinct characteristics. Despite the growing interest in SACs, only limited reviews have holistically summarized their advancements centering on performance metrics. In this review, first, a thorough overview on the research progress in SACs is presented from a performance perspective and the strategies, advancements, and intriguing approaches employed to enhance the critical attributes in SACs are discussed. Subsequently, a comprehensive summary and critical analysis of the electrochemical applications of SACs are provided, with a particular focus on their efficacy in the oxygen reduction reaction , oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction , CO2 reduction reaction, and N2 reduction reaction . Finally, the outline future research directions on SACs by concentrating on performance-driven investigation, where potential areas for improvement are identified and promising avenues for further study are highlighted, addressing challenges to unlock the full potential of SACs as high-performance catalysts.

Highly Active and Sintering-Resistant Pt Clusters Supported on FeOx-Hydroxyapatite Achieved by Tailoring Strong Metal-Support Interactions

The catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts is closely related to their structure. While Pt-based catalysts are widely used in many catalytic reactions because of their exceptional intrinsic activity, they tend to deactivate in high-temperature reactions, requiring a tedious and expensive regeneration process. The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is a promising strategy to improve the stability of supported metal nanoparticles, but often at the price of the activity due to either the coverage of the active sites by support overlay and/or the too-strong metal-support bonding. Herein, we newly constructed a supported Pt cluster catalyst by introducing FeOx into hydroxyapatite (HAP) support to fine-tune the SMSIs. The catalyst exhibited not only high catalytic activity but also sintering resistance, without deactivation in a 100 h test for catalytic CO oxidation. Detailed characterizations reveal that FeOx introduced into HAP weaken the strong covalent metal-support interaction (CMSI) between Pt and FeOx while simultaneously inhibiting the oxidative strong metal-support interaction (OMSI) between Pt and HAP, giving rise to both high activity and thermal stability of the supported Pt clusters.

Dynamic structural evolution of MgO-supported palladium catalysts: from metal to metal oxide nanoparticles to surface then subsurface atomically dispersed cations

Supported noble metal catalysts, ubiquitous in chemical technology, often undergo dynamic transformations between reduced and oxidized states-which influence the metal nuclearities, oxidation states, and catalytic properties. In this investigation, we report the results of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and other physical characterization techniques, bolstered by density functional theory, to elucidate the structural transformations of a set of MgO-supported palladium catalysts under oxidative treatment conditions. As the calcination temperature increased, the as-synthesized supported metallic palladium nanoparticles underwent oxidation to form palladium oxides (at approximately 400 °C), which, at approximately 500 °C, were oxidatively fragmented to form mixtures of atomically dispersed palladium cations. The data indicate two distinct types of atomically dispersed species: palladium cations located at MgO steps and those embedded in the first subsurface layer of MgO. The former exhibit significantly higher (>500 times) catalytic activity for ethylene hydrogenation than the latter. The results pave the way for designing highly active and stable supported palladium hydrogenation catalysts with optimized metal utilization.

Investigation into the impact of CeO2 morphology regulation on the oxidation process of dichloromethane

Four distinct CeO2 catalysts featuring varied morphologies (nanorods, nanocubes, nanoparticles, and nano spindle-shaped) were synthesized through a hydrothermal process and subsequently employed in the oxidation of dichloromethane (DCM). The findings revealed that the nano spindle-shaped CeO2 exhibited exposure of crystal faces (111), demonstrating superior catalytic oxidation performance for DCM with a T90 of 337 °C and notably excellent low-temperature catalytic activity (T50 = 192 °C). The primary reaction products were identified as HCl and CO2. Through obvious characterizations, it showed that the excellent catalytic activity presented by CeO2-s catalyst might be related to the higher oxygen vacancy concentration, surface active oxygen content, and superior redox performance caused by specific exposed crystal planes. Meanwhile, CeO2-s catalyst owned outstanding stability, reusability, and water inactivation regeneration, which had tremendous potential in practical treatment.

Mated-Atom Nanozymes with Efficient Assisted NAD+ Replenishment for Skin Regeneration

Excessive accumulation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) within biological organisms is closely associated with many diseases. It remains a challenge to efficiently convert superfluous and detrimental NADH to NAD+. NADH oxidase (NOX) is a crucial oxidoreductase that catalyzes the oxidation of NADH to NAD+. Herein, M1M2 (Mi=V/Mn/Fe/Co/Cu/Mo/Rh/Ru/Pd, i = 1 or 2) mated-atom nanozymes (MANs) are designed by mimicking natural enzymes with polymetallic active centers. Excitingly, RhCo MAN possesses excellent and sustainable NOX-like activity, with Km-NADH (16.11 μM) being lower than that of NOX-mimics reported so far. Thus, RhCo MAN can significantly promote the regeneration of NAD+ and regulate macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype through down-regulation of TLR4 expression, which may help to recover skin regeneration. However, RhRu MAN with peroxidase-like activity and RhMn MAN with superoxide dismutase-like activity exhibit little modulating effects on eczema. This work provides a new strategy to inhibit skin inflammation and promote skin regeneration.

CO-Induced Dimer Decay Responsible for Gem-Dicarbonyl Formation on a Model Single-Atom Catalyst

The ability to coordinate multiple reactants at the same active site is important for the wide-spread applicability of single-atom catalysis. Model catalysts are ideal to investigate the link between active site geometry and reactant binding, because the structure of single-crystal surfaces can be precisely determined, the adsorbates imaged by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and direct comparisons made to density functional theory. In this study, we follow the evolution of Rh1 adatoms and minority Rh2 dimers on Fe3O4(001) during exposure to CO using time-lapse STM at room temperature. CO adsorption at Rh1 sites results exclusively in stable Rh1CO monocarbonyls, because the Rh atom adapts its coordination to create a stable pseudo-square planar environment. Rh1(CO)2 gem-dicarbonyl species are also observed, but these form exclusively through the breakup of Rh2 dimers via an unstable Rh2(CO)3 intermediate. Overall, our results illustrate how minority species invisible to area-averaging spectra can play an important role in catalytic systems, and show that the decomposition of dimers or small clusters can be an avenue to produce reactive, metastable configurations in single-atom catalysis.

In Situ Reconstruction of Active Heterointerface for Hydrocarbon Combustion through Thermal Aging over Strontium-Modified Co3O4 Nanocatalyst with Good Sintering Resistance

The issue of catalyst deactivation due to sintering has gained significant attention alongside the rapid advancement of thermal catalysts. In this work, a simple Sr modification strategy was applied to achieve highly active Co3O4-based nanocatalyst for catalytic combustion of hydrocarbons with excellent antisintering feature. With the Co1Sr0.3 catalyst achieving a 90% propane conversion temperature (T90) of only 289 °C at a w8 hly space velocity of 60,000 mL·g-1·h-1, 24 °C lower than that of pure Co3O4. Moreover, the sintering resistance of Co3O4 catalysts was greatly improved by SrCO3 modification, and the T90 over Co1Sr0.3 just increased from 289 to 337 °C after thermal aging at 750 °C for 100 h, while that over pure Co3O4 catalysts increased from 313 to 412 °C. Through strontium modification, a certain amount of SrCO3 was introduced on the Co3O4 catalyst, which can serve as a physical barrier during the thermal aging process and further formation of Sr-Co perovskite nanocrystals, thus preventing the aggregation growth of Co3O4 nanocrystals and generating new active SrCoO2.52-Co3O4 heterointerface. In addition, propane durability tests of the Co1Sr0.3 catalysts showed strong water vapor resistance and stability, as well as excellent low-temperature activity and resistance to sintering in the oxidation reactions of other typical hydrocarbons such as toluene and propylene. This study provides a general strategy for achieving thermal catalysts by perfectly combining both highly low-temperature activity and sintering resistance, which will have great significance in practical applications for replacing precious materials with comparative features.

Bottom-Up Construction of Mesoporous Cerium-Doped Titania with Stably Dispersed Pt Nanocluster for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Hydrogen generation is one of the crucial technologies to realize sustainable energy development, and the design of advanced catalysts with efficient interfacial sites and fast mass transfer is significant for hydrogen evolution. Herein, an in situ coassembly strategy was proposed to engineer a cerium-doped ordered mesoporous titanium oxide (mpCe/TiO2), of which the abundant oxygen vacancies (Ov) and highly exposed active pore walls contribute to good stability of ultrasmall Pt nanoclusters (NCs, ∼ 1.0 nm in diameter) anchored in the uniform mesopores (ca. 20 nm). Consequently, the tailored mpCe/TiO2 with 0.5 mol % Ce-doping-supported Pt NCs (Pt-mpCe/TiO2-0.5) exhibits superior H2 evolution performance toward the water-gas shift reaction with a 0.73 molH2·s-1·molPt-1 H2 evolution rate at 200 °C, which is almost 6-fold higher than the Pt-mpTiO2 (0.13 molH2·s-1·molPt-1 H2). Density functional theory calculations confirm that the structure of Ce-doped TiO2 with Ce coordinated to six O atoms by substituting Ti atoms is thermodynamically favorable without the deformation of Ti-O bonds. The Ov generated by the six O atom-coordinated Ce doping is highly active for H2O dissociation with an energy barrier of 2.18 eV, which is obviously lower than the 2.37 eV for the control TiO2. In comparison with TiO2, the resultant Ce/TiO2 support acts as a superior electron acceptor for Pt NCs and causes electron deficiency at the Pt/support interface with a 0.17 eV downshift of the Pt d-band center, showing extremely obvious electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). As a result, abundant and hyperactive Ti3+-Ov(-Ce3+)-Ptδ+ interfacial sites are formed to significantly promote the generation of CO2 and H2 evolution. In addition, the stronger EMSI between Pt NCs and mpCe/TiO2-0.5 than that between Pt and mpTiO2 contributes to the superior self-enhanced catalytic performance during the cyclic test, where the CO conversion at 200 °C increases from 72% for the fresh catalyst to 99% for the used one. These findings reveal the subtle relationship between the mesoporous metal oxide-metal composite catalysts with unique chemical microenvironments and their catalytic performance, which is expected to inspire the design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts.

Water-assisted oxidative redispersion of Cu particles through formation of Cu hydroxide at room temperature

Sintering of active metal species often happens during catalytic reactions, which requires redispersion in a reactive atmosphere at elevated temperatures to recover the activity. Herein, we report a simple method to redisperse sintered Cu catalysts via O2-H2O treatment at room temperature. In-situ spectroscopic characterizations reveal that H2O induces the formation of hydroxylated Cu species in humid O2, pushing surface diffusion of Cu atoms at room temperature. Further, surface OH groups formed on most hydroxylable support surfaces such as γ-Al2O3, SiO2, and CeO2 in the humid atmosphere help to pull the mobile Cu species and enhance Cu redispersion. Both pushing and pulling effects of gaseous H2O promote the structural transformation of Cu aggregates into highly dispersed Cu species at room temperature, which exhibit enhanced activity in reverse water gas shift and preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide reactions. These findings highlight the important role of H2O in the dynamic structure evolution of supported metal nanocatalysts and lay the foundation for the regeneration of sintered catalysts under mild conditions.

Surface Engineered Single-atom Systems for Energy Conversion

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are demonstrated to show exceptional reactivity and selectivity in catalytic reactions by effectively utilizing metal species, making them a favorable choice among the different active materials for energy conversion. However, SACs are still in the early stages of energy conversion, and problems like agglomeration and low energy conversion efficiency are hampering their practical applications. Substantial research focus on support modifications, which are vital for SAC reactivity and stability due to the intimate relationship between metal atoms and support. In this review, a category of supports and a variety of surface engineering strategies employed in SA systems are summarized, including surface site engineering (heteroatom doping, vacancy introducing, surface groups grafting, and coordination tunning) and surface structure engineering (size/morphology control, cocatalyst deposition, facet engineering, and crystallinity control). Also, the merits of support surface engineering in single-atom systems are systematically introduced. Highlights are the comprehensive summary and discussions on the utilization of surface-engineered SACs in diversified energy conversion applications including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermocatalysis, and energy conversion devices. At the end of this review, the potential and obstacles of using surface-engineered SACs in the field of energy conversion are discussed. This review aims to guide the rational design and manipulation of SACs for target-specific applications by capitalizing on the characteristic benefits of support surface engineering.

Structured Catalysts and Catalytic Processes: Transport and Reaction Perspectives

The structure of catalysts determines the performance of catalytic processes. Intrinsically, the electronic and geometric structures influence the interaction between active species and the surface of the catalyst, which subsequently regulates the adsorption, reaction, and desorption behaviors. In recent decades, the development of catalysts with complex structures, including bulk, interfacial, encapsulated, and atomically dispersed structures, can potentially affect the electronic and geometric structures of catalysts and lead to further control of the transport and reaction of molecules. This review describes comprehensive understandings on the influence of electronic and geometric properties and complex catalyst structures on the performance of relevant heterogeneous catalytic processes, especially for the transport and reaction over structured catalysts for the conversions of light alkanes and small molecules. The recent research progress of the electronic and geometric properties over the active sites, specifically for theoretical descriptors developed in the recent decades, is discussed at the atomic level. The designs and properties of catalysts with specific structures are summarized. The transport phenomena and reactions over structured catalysts for the conversions of light alkanes and small molecules are analyzed. At the end of this review, we present our perspectives on the challenges for the further development of structured catalysts and heterogeneous catalytic processes.

Dynamic Copper Site Redispersion through Atom Trapping in Zeolite Defects

Single-site copper-based catalysts have shown remarkable activity and selectivity for a variety of reactions. However, deactivation by sintering in high-temperature reducing environments remains a challenge and often limits their use due to irreversible structural changes to the catalyst. Here, we report zeolite-based copper catalysts in which copper oxide agglomerates formed after reaction can be repeatedly redispersed back to single sites using an oxidative treatment in air at 550 °C. Under different environments, single-site copper in Cu-Zn-Y/deAlBeta undergoes dynamic changes in structure and oxidation state that can be tuned to promote the formation of key active sites while minimizing deactivation through Cu sintering. For example, single-site Cu2+ reduces to Cu1+ after catalyst pretreatment (270 °C, 101 kPa H2) and further to Cu0 nanoparticles under reaction conditions (270-350 °C, 7 kPa EtOH, 94 kPa H2) or accelerated aging (400-450 °C, 101 kPa H2). After regeneration at 550 °C in air, agglomerated CuO was dispersed back to single sites in the presence and absence of Zn and Y, which was verified by imaging, in situ spectroscopy, and catalytic rate measurements. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that solvation of CuO monomers by water facilitates their transport through the zeolite pore, and condensation of the CuO monomer with a fully protonated silanol nest entraps copper and reforms the single-site structure. The capability of silanol nests to trap and stabilize copper single sites under oxidizing conditions could extend the use of single-site copper catalysts to a wider variety of reactions and allows for a simple regeneration strategy for copper single-site catalysts.

Rapid laser fabrication of indium tin oxide and polymer-derived ceramic composite thin films for high-temperature sensors

Thin-film sensors are essential for real-time monitoring of components in high-temperature environments. Traditional fabrication methods often involve complicated fabrication steps or require prolonged high-temperature annealing, limiting their practical applicability. Here, we present an approach using direct ink writing and laser scanning (DIW-LS) to fabricate high-temperature functional thin films. An indium tin oxide (ITO)/preceramic polymer (PP) ink suitable for DIW was developed. Under LS, the ITO/PP thin film shrank in volume. Meanwhile, the rapid pyrolysis of PP into amorphous precursor-derived ceramic (PDC) facilitated the faster sintering of ITO nanoparticles and improved the densification of the thin film. This process realized the formation of a conductive network of interconnected ITO nanoparticles. The results show that the ITO/PDC thin film exhibits excellent stability, with a drift rate of 4.7 % at 1000 °C for 25 h, and withstands temperatures up to 1250 °C in the ambient atmosphere. It is also sensitive to strain, with a maximum gauge factor of -6.0. As a proof of concept, we have used DIW-LS technology to fabricate a thin-film heat flux sensor on the surface of the turbine blade, capable of measuring heat flux densities over 1 MW/m2. This DIW-LS process provides a viable approach for the integrated, rapid, and flexible fabrication of thin film sensors for harsh environments.

Tuning Chemical and Morphological Properties of Ceria Nanopowders by Mechanochemistry

Cerium oxide powders are widely used and are of fundamental importance in catalytic pollution control and energy production due to the unique chemical properties of CeO2. Processing steps involved in catalyst preparation, such as high-temperature calcination or mechanical milling processes, can alter the morphological and chemical properties of ceria, heavily affecting its final properties. Here, we focus on the tuning of CeO2 nanopowder properties by mild- and high-energy milling processes, as the mechanochemical synthesis is gaining increasing attention as a green synthesis method for catalyst production. The textural and redox properties were analyzed by an array of techniques to follow the aggregation and comminution mechanisms induced by mechanical stresses, which are more prominent under high-energy conditions but strongly depend on the starting properties of the ceria powders. Simultaneously, the evolution of surface defects and chemical properties was followed by Raman spectroscopy and H2 reduction tests, ultimately revealing a trade-off effect between structural and redox properties induced by the mechanochemical action. The mild-energy process appears to induce the largest enhancement in surface properties while maintaining bulk properties of the starting materials, hence confirming its effectiveness for its exploitation in catalysis.

Controlling Pt nanoparticle sintering by sub-monolayer MgO ALD thin films

Metal nanoparticle (NP) sintering is a major cause of catalyst deactivation, as NP growth reduces the surface area available for reaction. A promising route to halt sintering is to deposit a protective overcoat on the catalyst surface, followed by annealing to generate overlayer porosity for gas transport to the NPs. Yet, such a combined deposition-annealing approach lacks structural control over the cracked protection layer and the number of NP surface atoms available for reaction. Herein, we exploit the tailoring capabilities of atomic layer deposition (ALD) to deposit MgO overcoats on archetypal Pt NP catalysts with thicknesses ranging from sub-monolayers to nm-range thin films. Two different ALD processes are studied for the growth of MgO overcoats on Pt NPs anchored on a SiO2 support, using Mg(EtCp)2 and H2O, and Mg(TMHD)2 and O3, respectively. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reveal significant growth on both SiO2 and Pt for the former process, while the latter exhibits a drastically lower growth per cycle with an initial chemical selectivity towards Pt. These differences in MgO growth characteristics have implications for the availability of uncoated Pt surface atoms at different stages of the ALD process, as probed by low energy ion scattering, and for the sintering behavior during O2 annealing, as monitored in situ with grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (in situ GISAXS). The Mg(TMHD)2-O3 ALD process enables exquisite coverage control allowing a balance between physically blocking the Pt surface to prevent sintering and keeping Pt surface atoms free for reaction. This approach avoids the need for post-annealing, hence also safeguarding the structural integrity of the as-deposited overcoat.

Dynamic Behavior of Platinum Atoms and Clusters in the Native Oxide Layer of Aluminum Nanocrystals

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) are well-known in the field of heterogeneous catalysis to induce the encapsulation of platinum (Pt) group metals by oxide supports through high temperature H2 reduction. However, demonstrations of SMSI overlayers have largely been limited to reducible oxides, such as TiO2 and Nb2O5. Here, we show that the amorphous native surface oxide of plasmonic aluminum nanocrystals (AlNCs) exhibits SMSI-induced encapsulation of Pt following reduction in H2 in a Pt structure dependent manner. Reductive treatment in H2 at 300 °C induces the formation of an AlOx SMSI overlayer on Pt clusters, leaving Pt single-atom sites (Ptiso) exposed available for catalysis. The remaining exposed Ptiso species possess a more uniform local coordination environment than has been observed on other forms of Al2O3, suggesting that the AlOx native oxide of AlNCs presents well-defined anchoring sites for individual Pt atoms. This observation extends our understanding of SMSIs by providing evidence that H2-induced encapsulation can occur for a wider variety of materials and should stimulate expanded studies of this effect to include nonreducible oxides with oxygen defects and the presence of disorder. It also suggests that the single-atom sites created in this manner, when combined with the plasmonic properties of the Al nanocrystal core, may allow for site-specific single-atom plasmonic photocatalysis, providing dynamic control over the light-driven reactivity in these systems.

Coupling Fe-Co atomic pair to promote the selective reduction of nitroaromatics under mild conditions

Selectively reducing nitroaromatics into aromatic amines will not only remove nitroaromatic pollutants in waste effluents to reduce environmental risks, but also yield important feedstocks for chemical industrial manufactures. In this study, a FeCo-co-embedded N-doped Carbon (FeCo-N-C) catalyst with Fe-Co atomic pair has been identified with favorable activity, superior selectivity, excellent reusability, as well as outstanding performance in the treatment of real water. The combined results from theoretical study and experimental tests indicate that the improved catalytic performance of FeCo-N-C is owing to the narrowed band gap and electron delocalization caused by the Fe-Co atomic pair which can improve electron transport in its catalytic reaction. The results of isotope experiments and H* quenching experiments confirm that H2O is the source of hydrogen in catalytic reduction of PNP. FeCo-N-C is identified as a superior catalyst to replace multitudinous currently used noble-metal catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of nitroaromatics in wastewater treatment.

Generating active metal/oxide reverse interfaces through coordinated migration of single atoms

Identification of active sites in catalytic materials is important and helps establish approaches to the precise design of catalysts for achieving high reactivity. Generally, active sites of conventional heterogeneous catalysts can be single atom, nanoparticle or a metal/oxide interface. Herein, we report that metal/oxide reverse interfaces can also be active sites which are created from the coordinated migration of metal and oxide atoms. As an example, a Pd1/CeO2 single-atom catalyst prepared via atom trapping, which is otherwise inactive at 30 °C, is able to completely oxidize formaldehyde after steam treatment. The enhanced reactivity is due to the formation of a Ce2O3-Pd nanoparticle domain interface, which is generated by the migration of both Ce and Pd atoms on the atom-trapped Pd1/CeO2 catalyst during steam treatment. We show that the generation of metal oxide-metal interfaces can be achieved in other heterogeneous catalysts due to the coordinated mobility of metal and oxide atoms, demonstrating the formation of a new active interface when using metal single-atom material as catalyst precursor.

Selectivity regulation of CO2 photoreduction via the electron configuration of active sites on single-atom photocatalysts

The major challenge in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 is to achieve high conversion efficiency while maintaining selectivity for a single product. Photocatalysts containing single-metal Cu2+ with 3d9 and Zn2+ with 3d10 on g-C3N4 were prepared using a high-energy ball mill. Single-atom Zn inner electron configuration is stable (3d10) and the peripheral empty orbitals act as electron traps to trap photo-generated electrons and improve the efficiency of charge separation; Zn is an active site to enhance the adsorption and activation of CO2. The stable electron configuration can reduce the energy required for the overall reaction and increase the activity while changing the reaction pathway to form CO. As a result, the 0.5 mol% Zn/g-C3N4 (Zn-CN-0.5) photocatalyst achieves ∼100 % selectivity for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO at a rate of ∼21.1 μmol·g-1·h-1. In contrast, the 0.5 mol% Cu/g-C3N4 (Cu-CN-0.5) photocatalyst with an unstable electronic structure does not exhibit high selectivity.

Copper Single-Atom Catalysts-A Rising Star for Energy Conversion and Environmental Purification: Synthesis, Modification, and Advanced Applications

Future renewable energy supply and green, sustainable environmental development rely on various types of catalytic reactions. Copper single-atom catalysts (Cu SACs) are attractive due to their distinctive electronic structure (3d orbitals are not filled with valence electrons), high atomic utilization, and excellent catalytic performance and selectivity. Despite numerous optimization studies are conducted on Cu SACs in terms of energy conversion and environmental purification, the coupling among Cu atoms-support interactions, active sites, and catalytic performance remains unclear, and a systematic review of Cu SACs is lacking. To this end, this work summarizes the recent advances of Cu SACs. The synthesis strategies of Cu SACs, metal-support interactions between Cu single atoms and different supports, modification methods including modification for carriers, coordination environment regulating, site distance effect utilizing, and dual metal active center catalysts constructing, as well as their applications in energy conversion and environmental purification are emphatically introduced. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for the future Cu SACs development are discussed. This review aims to provide insight into Cu SACs and a reference for their optimal design and wide application.
