Guest-Induced Helical Superstructure from a Gold Nanocluster-Based Supramolecular Organic Framework Enables Efficient Catalysis

Mimicking hierarchical assembly in nature to exploit atomically precise artificial systems with complex structures and versatile functions remains a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report two single-crystal supramolecular organic frameworks (MSOF-4 and MSOF-5) based on custom-designed atomically precise gold nanoclusters Au11(4-Mpy)3(PPh3)7, showing distinct and intriguing host-guest adaptation behaviors toward 1-/2-bromopropane (BPR) isomers. MSOF-4 exhibits sev topology and cylindrical channels with 4-mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) ligands matching well with guest 1-BPR. Due to the confinement effect, solid MSOF-4 undergoes significant structural change upon selective adsorption of 1-BPR vapor over 2-BPR, resulting in strong near-infrared fluorescence. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Au11(4-Mpy)3(PPh3)7 in MSOF-4 transforms into Au11Br3(PPh3)7 upon ligand exchange with 1-BPR, resulting in 1-BPR@MSOF-6 single crystals with a rarely reported helical assembly structure. Significantly, the double-helical structure of MSOF-6 facilitates efficient catalysis of the electron transfer (ET) reaction, resulting in a nearly 6 times increase of catalytic rates compared with MSOF-4. In sharp contrast, solid MSOF-5 possesses chb topology and cage-type channels with narrow windows, showing excellent selective physical adsorption toward 1-BPR vapor but a nonfluorescent feature upon guest adsorption. Our results demonstrate a powerful strategy for developing advanced assemblies with high-order complexity and engineering their functions in atomic precision.

Innovative Synthesis of Au Nanoparticle-Trapped Flexible Macrocrystals: Achieving Stable Black Crystal Wires with Broadband Absorption

In optical materials, the development of absorbers for a wide spectrum is a focal point of research. A pivotal challenge lies in ensuring the stability and durability of optical absorbers, particularly at elevated temperatures. This study introduces a novel approach to creating absorbers with diverse colors, focusing on the synthesis and properties of black crystal wires. In contrast to black gold nanoparticle (Au NP) precipitates, which change color within hours under similar conditions, the method involves strategically trapping Au NPs within defects during the growth of single crystals. This results in black crystal wires that not only exhibit broadband absorption but also maintain exceptional stability even under prolonged exposure to high temperatures. The method also involves the controlled synthesis of colorless and red crystal wires. As a proof of concept, these stable black Au crystal wires demonstrate superior performance in photothermal conversion applications. The methodology, derived from the crystal growth process, presents a defect template that offers a novel approach to material design. Furthermore, these unique crystals, available in various colors, hold significant promise for a range of unexplored applications.

Influence of the substituents of the thiol ligand on the optical properties of AuCu14

Detailed photophysical processes of two AuCu14 clusters with different substituents (-F or -C(CH3)3) of the thiol ligand were studied in this work. The electronic effect of the substituents led to structural shrinkage, thus enhancing the luminous intensity. The internal conversion (IC) and intersystem crossing (ISC) rates in the AuCu14-C(CH3)3 crystal were slower compared with the AuCu14-F crystal, which was caused by the steric effect.

Chemical Flexibility of Atomically Precise Metal Clusters

Ligand-protected metal clusters possess hybrid properties that seamlessly combine an inorganic core with an organic ligand shell, imparting them exceptional chemical flexibility and unlocking remarkable application potential in diverse fields. Leveraging chemical flexibility to expand the library of available materials and stimulate the development of new functionalities is becoming an increasingly pressing requirement. This Review focuses on the origin of chemical flexibility from the structural analysis, including intra-cluster bonding, inter-cluster interactions, cluster-environments interactions, metal-to-ligand ratios, and thermodynamic effects. In the introduction, we briefly outline the development of metal clusters and explain the differences and commonalities of M(I)/M(I/0) coinage metal clusters. Additionally, we distinguish the bonding characteristics of metal atoms in the inorganic core, which give rise to their distinct chemical flexibility. Section 2 delves into the structural analysis, bonding categories, and thermodynamic theories related to metal clusters. In the following sections 3 to 7, we primarily elucidate the mechanisms that trigger chemical flexibility, the dynamic processes in transformation, the resultant alterations in structure, and the ensuing modifications in physical-chemical properties. Section 8 presents the notable applications that have emerged from utilizing metal clusters and their assemblies. Finally, in section 9, we discuss future challenges and opportunities within this area.

Silver Cluster Assembled Materials: A Model-Driven Perspective on Recent Progress, with a Spotlight on Ag12 Cluster Assembly

The exploration of individual nanoclusters is rapidly advancing, despite stability concerns. To address this challenge, the assembly of cluster nodes through linker molecules has been successfully implemented. However, the linking of the cluster nodes itself introduces a multitude of possibilities, especially when additional factors come into play. While this method proves effective in enhancing material stability, the specific reasons behind its success remain elusive. In our laboratory, we have undertaken extensive studies on Ag cluster-assembled materials. So, here our goal is to establish a model system that allows for the discernment of various factors, eliminating unnecessary complexities during the linking approach. So, we hope that the systematic discourse presented in here will contribute significantly to future endeavors, helping to set clear priorities, and provide solutions to concerns that arise when working with a model system.

Controlled Sequential Doping of Metal Nanocluster

Atomically precise doping of metal nanoclusters provides excellent opportunities not only for subtly tailoring their properties but also for in-depth understanding of composition (structure)-property correlation of metal nanoclusters and has attracted increasing interest partly due to its significance for fundamental research and practical applications. Although single and multiple metal atom doping of metal nanoclusters (NCs) has been achieved, sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping is still a big challenge and has not yet been reported. Herein, by introducing a second ligand, a novel multistep synthesis method was developed, controlled sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping was successfully achieved for the first time, and three doped NCs Au25Cd1(p-MBT)17(PPh3)2, Au18Cd2(p-MBT)14(PPh3)2, and [Au19Cd3(p-MBT)18]- (p-MBTH: para-methylbenzenethiol) were obtained, including two novel NCs that were precisely characterized via mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and so forth. Furthermore, sequential doping-induced evolutions in the atomic and crystallographic structures and optical and catalytic properties of NCs were revealed.

Atomically precise photothermal nanomachines

Interfacing molecular machines to inorganic nanoparticles can, in principle, lead to hybrid nanomachines with extended functions. Here we demonstrate a ligand engineering approach to develop atomically precise hybrid nanomachines by interfacing gold nanoclusters with tetraphenylethylene molecular rotors. When gold nanoclusters are irradiated with near-infrared light, the rotation of surface-decorated tetraphenylethylene moieties actively dissipates the absorbed energy to sustain the photothermal nanomachine with an intact structure and steady efficiency. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy reveal that the photogenerated hot electrons are rapidly cooled down within picoseconds via electron-phonon coupling in the nanomachine. We find that the nanomachine remains structurally and functionally intact in mammalian cells and in vivo. A single dose of near-infrared irradiation can effectively ablate tumours without recurrence in tumour-bearing mice, which shows promise in the development of nanomachine-based theranostics.

A concise guide to chemical reactions of atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters

Nanoparticles (NPs) with atomic precision, known as nanoclusters (NCs), are an emerging field in materials science in view of their fascinating structure-property relationships. Ultrasmall noble metal NPs have molecule-like properties that make them fundamentally unique compared with their plasmonic counterparts and bulk materials. In this review, we present a comprehensive account of the chemistry of monolayer-protected atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters with a focus on the chemical reactions, their diversity, associated kinetics, and implications. To begin with, we briefly review the history of the evolution of such precision materials. Then the review explores the diverse chemistry of noble metal nanoclusters, including ligand exchange reactions, ligand-induced structural transformations, and reactions with metal ions, metal thiolates, and halocarbons. Just as molecules do, these precision materials also undergo intercluster reactions in solution. Supramolecular forces between these systems facilitate the creation of well-defined hierarchical assemblies, composites, and hybrid materials. We conclude the review with a future perspective and scope of such chemistry.

Biomimetic crystallization for long-pursued -COOH-functionalized gold nanocluster with near-infrared phosphorescence

As an interdisciplinary product, water-soluble gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) stabilized by ligands containing carboxyl (-COOH) group have garnered significant attention from synthetic chemists and biologists due to their immense potential for biomedical applications. However, revealing the crystallographic structures of -COOH-functionalized AuNCs remains a bottleneck. Herein, we successfully applied the salting-out method to obtain a series of high-quality single crystals of -COOH-functionalized Au25 nanoclusters and revealed their crystallographic structures. Particularly, K3Au25(2-Hmna)9(mna)6]- (Au25a) protected by 2-mercaptonicotinic acid features an unprecedented tetrameric Au4(SRS)3(SRS,N)2 staple motifs surrounding the icosahedral Au13 kernel, breaking the traditional perception on the structure of Au25(SR)18. Au25a exhibits a distinct near-infrared emission at 970 nm with long lifetime of 8690 ns, which have been studied by transient absorption spectroscopy and time-dependent density functional theory. This work compensates for the research gap in the experimental structure of -COOH-functionalized AuNCs and opens up a new avenue to explore their structure-property correlations.

Thiacalix[4]arene-Protected Silver Nanoclusters Encapsulating Different Two-Electron Superatom Oligomers

The subvalent silver kernel represents the nascent state of silver cluster formation, yet the growth mechanism has long been elusive. Herein, two silver nanoclusters (Ag30 and Ag34) coprotected by TC4A4- (H4TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene) and TBPMT- (TBPMTH = 4-tert-butylbenzenemethanethiol) containing 6e and 4e silver kernels are synthesized and characterized. The trimer of the 2e superatom Ag14 kernel in Ag30 is built from a central Ag6 octahedron sandwiched by two orthogonally oriented Ag5 trigonal bipyramids through sharing vertexes, whereas a double-octahedral Ag10 kernel in Ag34 is a dimer of 2e superatoms. They manifest disparate polyhedron fusion growth patterns at the beginning of the silver cluster formation. Their excellent solution stabilities are contributed by the multisite and multidentate coordination fashion of TC4A4- and the special valence electron structures. This work demonstrates the precise control of silver kernel growth by the solvent strategy and lays a foundation for silver nanocluster application in photothermal conversion.

2D superlattices via interfacial self-assembly of polymer-grafted Au nanoparticles

Nanoparticle (NP) superlattices are periodic arrays of nanoscale building blocks. Because of the collective effect between functional NPs, NP superlattices can exhibit exciting new properties that are distinct from those of individual NPs or corresponding bulk materials. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) NP superlattices have attracted increasing attention due to their emerging applications in micro/opto-electronics, catalysis, sensing, and other fields. Among various preparation methods, evaporation-induced interfacial self-assembly has become the most popular method for preparing 2D NP superlattices because it is a simple, low-cost, and scalable process that can be widely applied to various NPs. Introducing soft ligands, such as polymers, can not only provide convenience in controlling the self-assembly process and tuning superlattice structures but also improve the properties of 2D NP superlattices. This feature article focuses on the methods of evaporation-induced self-assembly of polymer-grafted Au NPs into free-standing 2D NP superlattice films at air/liquid interfaces and 2D NP superlattice coatings on substrates, followed by studies on in situ tracking of the self-assembly evolution process through small-angle X-ray scattering. Their application in nano-floating gate memory devices is also included. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of this direction are discussed.

A High-Nuclearity Copper Sulfide Nanocluster [S-Cu50] Featuring a Double-Shell Structure Configuration with Cu(II)/Cu(I) Valences

This work represents an important step in the quest for creating atomically precise binary semiconductor nanoclusters (BS-NCs). Compared with coinage metal NCs, the preparation of BS-NCs requires strict control of the reaction kinetics to guarantee the formation of an atomically precise single phase under mild conditions, which otherwise could lead to the generation of multiple phases. Herein, we developed an acid-assisted thiolate dissociation approach that employs suitable acid to induce cleavage of the S-C bonds in the Cu-S-R (R = alkyl) precursor, spontaneously fostering the formation of the [Cu-S-Cu] skeleton upon the addition of extra Cu sources. Through this method, a high-nuclearity copper sulfide nanocluster, Cu50S12(SC(CH3)3)20(CF3COO)12 (abbreviated as [S-Cu50] hereafter), has been successfully prepared in high yield, and its atomic structure was accurately modeled through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was revealed that [S-Cu50] exhibits a unique double-shell structural configuration of [Cu14S12]@[Cu36S20], and the innermost [Cu14] moiety displays a rhombic dodecahedron geometry, which has never been observed in previously synthesized Cu metal, hydride, or chalcogenide NCs. Importantly, [S-Cu50] represents the first example incorporating mixed Cu(II)/Cu(I) valences in reported atomically precise copper sulfide NCs, which was unambiguously confirmed by XPS, EPR, and XANES. In addition, the electronic structure of [S-Cu50] was established by a variety of optical investigations, including absorption, photoluminescence, and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopies, as well as theoretical calculations. Moreover, [S-Cu50] is air-stable and demonstrates electrocatalytic activity in ORR with a four-electron pathway.

Halogen bonding-driven chiral amplification of a bimetallic gold-copper cluster through hierarchical assembly

Understanding the fundamentals and applications of chirality relies substantially on the amplification of chirality through hierarchical assemblies involving various weak interactions. However, a notable challenge remains for metal clusters chiral assembly driven by halogen bonding, despite their promising applications in lighting, catalysis, and biomedicine. Here, we used halogen bonding-driven assembly to achieve a hierarchical degree of achiral emissive Au2Cu2 clusters. From single crystals to one-dimensional ribbons and then to helixes, the morphologies were primarily modulated by intermolecular halogen bonding that evoked by achiral or/and chiral iodofluorobenzene (IFBs) molecules. Concomitantly, the luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) changed a lot, ultimately leading to a substantial increase in the luminescence dissymmetry g-factor (glum) of 0.036 in the supramolecular helix. This work opens an avenue for hierarchical assemblies using predesigned metal clusters as building blocks though directional halogen bonding. This achievement marks a noteworthy advancement in the field of nanosized inorganic functional blocks.

Electron transport through supercrystals of atomically precise gold nanoclusters: a thermal bi-stability effect

Nanoparticles (NPs) may behave like atoms or molecules in the self-assembly into artificial solids with stimuli-responsive properties. However, the functionality engineering of nanoparticle-assembled solids is still far behind the aesthetic approaches for molecules, with a major problem arising from the lack of atomic-precision in the NPs, which leads to incoherence in superlattices. Here we exploit coherent superlattices (or supercrystals) that are assembled from atomically precise Au103S2(SR)41 NPs (core dia. = 1.6 nm, SR = thiolate) for controlling the charge transport properties with atomic-level structural insights. The resolved interparticle ligand packing in Au103S2(SR)41-assembled solids reveals the mechanism behind the thermally-induced sharp transition in charge transport through the macroscopic crystal. Specifically, the response to temperature induces the conformational change to the R groups of surface ligands, as revealed by variable temperature X-ray crystallography with atomic resolution. Overall, this approach leads to an atomic-level correlation between the interparticle structure and a bi-stability functionality of self-assembled supercrystals, and the strategy may enable control over such materials with other novel functionalities.

Precision nanoengineering for functional self-assemblies across length scales

As nanotechnology continues to push the boundaries across disciplines, there is an increasing need for engineering nanomaterials with atomic-level precision for self-assembly across length scales, i.e., from the nanoscale to the macroscale. Although molecular self-assembly allows atomic precision, extending it beyond certain length scales presents a challenge. Therefore, the attention has turned to size and shape-controlled metal nanoparticles as building blocks for multifunctional colloidal self-assemblies. However, traditionally, metal nanoparticles suffer from polydispersity, uncontrolled aggregation, and inhomogeneous ligand distribution, resulting in heterogeneous end products. In this feature article, I will discuss how virus capsids provide clues for designing subunit-based, precise, efficient, and error-free self-assembly of colloidal molecules. The atomically precise nanoscale proteinic subunits of capsids display rigidity (conformational and structural) and patchy distribution of interacting sites. Recent experimental evidence suggests that atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters display an anisotropic distribution of ligands and patchy ligand bundles. This enables symmetry breaking, consequently offering a facile route for two-dimensional colloidal crystals, bilayers, and elastic monolayer membranes. Furthermore, inter-nanocluster interactions mediated via the ligand functional groups are versatile, offering routes for discrete supracolloidal capsids, composite cages, toroids, and macroscopic hierarchically porous frameworks. Therefore, engineered nanoparticles with atomically precise structures have the potential to overcome the limitations of molecular self-assembly and large colloidal particles. Self-assembly allows the emergence of new optical properties, mechanical strength, photothermal stability, catalytic efficiency, quantum yield, and biological properties. The self-assembled structures allow reproducible optoelectronic properties, mechanical performance, and accurate sensing. More importantly, the intrinsic properties of individual nanoclusters are retained across length scales. The atomically precise nanoparticles offer enormous potential for next-generation functional materials, optoelectronics, precision sensors, and photonic devices.

Capping Layer Determined Self-assembly of Au-Ag Bimetallic Janus Nanoparticles at An Oil/Water Interface by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Bimetallic Janus nanoparticles (BJNPs) have gained more attention due to their unique catalytic and optical properties. The self-assembly of BJNPs is expected as an effective way to fabricate metamaterials suitable for different potential applications. However, the self-assembly dynamic process of BJNPs, which is key to achieving a controllable synthesis, is limited in both experimental and theoretical investigations. Herein, all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to investigate the self-assembly process of 1-dodecanethiol (DDT)-decorated Au-Ag BJNPs at an oil-water interface. We demonstrate that DDT's van der Waals (vdW) interaction dominates the self-assembly process. BJNPs form close-packed structures at both fast and slow evaporation rates. Au-Ag BJNPs exhibit relatively larger rotations at a low evaporation rate than those at a high evaporation rate, suggesting that the evaporation rate influences the orientation of the Au-Ag BJNPs. BJNPs tend to orient their electric dipole moments toward the external electric field, according to the ab initio MD simulation results. Based on the energy comparison and model analysis, it is found that the parallel array is more stable than the antiparallel one for the Au-Ag BJNP arrays. The dipole-dipole interaction difference between the parallel and antiparallel BJNP arrays obtained according to dipole moment obtained from ab initio calculation is qualitatively consistent with that obtained from MD simulations, indicating that the dipole plays a decisive role in determining the orientation of the BJNP array. This work uncovers the self-assembly dynamic process of BJNPs, paving the way for future applications.

Elucidation of the electronic structures of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters by electrochemical measurements

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with sizes of approximately 2 nm or less have different physical/chemical properties from those of the bulk metals owing to quantum size effects. Metal NCs, which can be size-controlled and heterometal doped at atomic accuracy, are expected to be the next generation of important materials, and new metal NCs are reported regularly. However, compared with conventional materials such as metal complexes and relatively large metal nanoparticles (>2 nm), these metal NCs are still underdeveloped in terms of evaluation and establishment of application methods. Electrochemical measurements are one of the most widely used methods for synthesis, application, and characterisation of metal NCs. This review summarizes the basic knowledge of the electrochemistry and experimental techniques, and provides examples of the reported electronic states of thiolate-protected gold NCs elucidated by electrochemical approaches. It is expected that this review will provide useful information for researchers starting to study metal NCs.

Hydride-doped Ag17Cu10 nanoclusters as high-performance electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

The atomically precise metal electrocatalysts for driving CO2 reduction reactions are eagerly pursued as they are model systems to identify the active sites, understand the reaction mechanism, and further guide the exploration of efficient and practical metal nanocatalysts. Reported herein is a nanocluster-based electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction, which features a clear geometric and electronic structure, and more importantly excellent performance. The nanocatalysts with the molecular formula of [Ag17Cu10(dppm)4(PhC≡C)20H4]3+ have been obtained in a facile way. The unique metal framework of the cluster, with silver, copper, and hydride included, and dedicated surface structure, with strong (dppm) and labile (alkynyl) ligands coordinated, endow the cluster with excellent performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to CO. With the atomically precise electrocatalysts in hand, not only high reactivity and selectivity (Faradaic efficiency for CO up to 91.6%) but also long-term stability (24 h), are achieved.

-SR removal or -R removal? A mechanistic revisit on the puzzle of ligand etching of Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters during electrocatalysis

Accurate identification of active sites is highly desirable for elucidation of the reaction mechanism and development of efficient catalysts. Despite the promising catalytic performance of thiolated metal nanoclusters (NCs), their actual catalytic sites remain elusive. Traditional first-principles calculations and experimental observations suggested dealkylated S and dethiolated metal, respectively, to be the active centers. However, the real kinetic origin of thiolate etching during the electrocatalysis of NCs is still puzzling. Herein, we conducted advanced first-principles calculations and electrochemical/spectroscopic experiments to unravel the electrochemical etching kinetics of thiolate ligands in prototype Au25(SCH3)18 NC. The electrochemical processes are revealed to be spontaneously facilitated by dethiolation (i.e., desorption of -SCH3), forming the free HSCH3 molecule after explicitly including the solvent effect and electrode potential. Thus, exposed under-coordinated Au atoms, rather than the S atoms, serve as the real catalytic sites. The thermodynamically preferred Au-S bond cleavage arises from the selective attack of H from proton/H2O on the S atom under suitable electrochemical bias due to the spatial accessibility and the presence of S lone pair electrons. Decrease of reduction potential promotes the proton attack on S and significantly accelerates the kinetics of Au-S bond breakage irrespective of the pH of the medium. Our theoretical results are further verified by the experimental electrochemical and spectroscopic data. At more negative electrode potentials, the number of -SR ligands decreased with concomitant increase of the vibrational intensity of S-H bonds. These findings together clarify the atomic-level activation mechanism on the surface of Au25(SR)18 NCs.

Inverse design of chiral functional films by a robotic AI-guided system

Artificial chiral materials and nanostructures with strong and tuneable chiroptical activities, including sign, magnitude, and wavelength distribution, are useful owing to their potential applications in chiral sensing, enantioselective catalysis, and chiroptical devices. Thus, the inverse design and customized manufacturing of these materials is highly desirable. Here, we use an artificial intelligence (AI) guided robotic chemist to accurately predict chiroptical activities from the experimental absorption spectra and structure/process parameters, and generate chiral films with targeted chiroptical activities across the full visible spectrum. The robotic AI-chemist carries out the entire process, including chiral film construction, characterization, and testing. A machine learned reverse design model using spectrum embedded descriptors is developed to predict optimal structure/process parameters for any targeted chiroptical property. A series of chiral films with a dissymmetry factor as high as 1.9 (gabs ~ 1.9) are identified out of more than 100 million possible structures, and their feasible application in circular polarization-selective color filters for multiplex laser display and switchable circularly polarized (CP) luminescence is demonstrated. Our findings not only provide chiral films with the highest reported chiroptical activity, but also have great fundamental value for the inverse design of chiroptical materials.

Ligand-protected metal nanoclusters as low-loss, highly polarized emitters for optical waveguides

Photoluminescent molecules and nanomaterials have potential applications as active waveguides, but such a use has often been limited by high optical losses and complex fabrication processes. We explored ligand-protected metal nanoclusters (LPMNCs), which can have strong, stable, and tunable emission, as waveguides. Two alloy LPMNCs, Pt1Ag18 and AuxAg19-x (7 ≤ x ≤ 9), were synthesized and structurally determined. Crystals of both exhibited excellent optical waveguide performance, with optical loss coefficients of 5.26 × 10-3 and 7.77 × 10-3 decibels per micrometer, respectively, lower than those demonstrated by most inorganic, organic, and hybrid materials. The crystal packing and molecular orientation of the Pt1Ag18 compound led to an extremely high polarization ratio of 0.91. Aggregation enhanced the quantum yields of Pt1Ag18 and AuxAg19-x LPMNCs by 115- and 1.5-fold, respectively. This photonic cluster with low loss and high polarization provides a generalizable and versatile platform for active waveguides and polarizable materials.

Light has profoundly impacted modern medicine and healthcare, with numerous luminescent agents and imaging techniques currently being used to assess health and treat diseases. As an emerging concept in luminescence, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has shown great potential in biological applications due to its advantages in terms of brightness, biocompatibility, photostability, and positive correlation with concentration. This review provides a comprehensive summary of AIE luminogens applied in imaging of biological structure and dynamic physiological processes, disease diagnosis and treatment, and detection and monitoring of specific analytes, followed by representative works. Discussions on critical issues and perspectives on future directions are also included. This review aims to stimulate the interest of researchers from different fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, medicine, etc., thus promoting the development of AIE in the fields of life and health.

Mechanistic Study of the Hydride Migration-Induced Reversible Isomerization in Au22(SR)15H Isomers

Unraveling the evolution mechanism of metal nanoclusters is of great importance in understanding the formation and evolution of metallic condensed matters. In this work, the specific evolution process between a pair of gold nanocluster (Au NC) isomers is completely revealed by introducing hydride ligands to simplify the research system. A hydride-containing Au NC, Au₂₂(SR)₁₅H, was synthesized by kinetic control, and the positions of the hydrides were then confirmed by combining X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and DFT calculations. Importantly, a reversible structural isomerization was found to occur on this Au₂₂(SR)₁₅H. By combining the crystal structures and theoretical calculations, the focus was placed on the hydride-binding site, and a [Au-H] migration mechanism of this isomerization process is clearly shown. Furthermore, this [Au-H] migration mechanism is confirmed by the subsequent capture and structural determination of theoretically predicted intermediates. This work provides insight into the dynamic behavior of hydride ligands in nanoclusters and a strategy to study the evolution mechanism of nanoclusters by taking the hydride ligand as the breakthrough point.

Asymmetric transformation of achiral gold nanoclusters with negative nonlinear dependence between chiroptical activity and enantiomeric excess

The investigation of chirality at the nanoscale is important to bridge the gap between molecular and macroscopic chirality. Atomically precise metal nanoclusters provide an ideal platform for this research, while their enantiopure preparation poses a challenge. Here, we describe an efficient approach to enantiopure metal nanoclusters via asymmetric transformation, that is, achiral Au₂₃(SC₆H₁₁)₁₆ nanoclusters are converted into chiral and enantiopure Au₂₄(L)₂(SC₆H₁₁)₁₆ nanoclusters by a chiral inducer phosphoramidite (L). Two enantiomers of Au₂₄(L)₂(SC₆H₁₁)₁₆ are obtained and the crystal structures reveal their hierarchical chirality, which originates from the two introduced chiral L molecules, the transformation-triggered asymmetric rearrangement of the staple motifs on the surface of the gold core, and the helical arrangement of nanocluster molecules. The construction of this type of enantiomerically pure nanoclusters is achieved based on the easy-to-synthesize and modular L. Lastly, the chirality-related chiroptical performance was investigated, revealing a negative nonlinear CD-ee dependence.

Intrinsic Optical Properties and Emerging Applications of Gold Nanostructures

The collective oscillation of free electrons at the nanoscale surface of gold nanostructures is closely modulated by tuning the size, shape/morphology, phase, composition, hybridization, assembly, and nanopatterning, along with the surroundings of the plasmonic surface located at a dielectric interface with air, liquid, and solid. This review first introduces the physical origin of the intrinsic optical properties of gold nanostructures and further summarizes stimuli-responsive changes in optical properties, metal-field-enhanced optical signals, luminescence spectral shaping, chiroptical response, and photogenerated hot carriers. The current success in the landscape of nanoscience and nanotechnology mainly originates from the abundant optical properties of gold nanostructures in the thermodynamically stable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. It has been further extended by crystal phase engineering to prepare thermodynamically unfavorable phases (e.g., kinetically stable) and heterophases to modulate their intriguing phase-dependent optical properties. A broad range of promising applications, including but not limited to full-color displays, solar energy harvesting, photochemical reactions, optical sensing, and microscopic/biomedical imaging, have fostered parallel research on the multitude of physical effects occurring in gold nanostructures.

Secondary hierarchical complexity in double-stranded cluster helicates covered by NNNNN type pincer ligands

We designed and synthesized a new tripyridine dipyrrolide pincer ligand, which could be doubly deprotonated to provide five-nitrogen-donor sites and then utilized to prepare a subnanometric chiral silver cluster. The cluster belongs to an S₄ point group and shows a double-stranded helicate. DFT calculations were performed to analyze the electronic structure of the cluster. Interestingly, through hierarchical intercluster interactions, the cluster helicates evolve into complex secondary structures including a right-handed helix and a folded sheet, both of which are reminiscent of secondary structures of proteins, i.e., an α-helix and an antiparallel β-sheet.

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters at the molecular-to-metallic transition with intrinsic chirality from surface layers

The advances in determining the total structure of atomically precise metal nanoclusters have prompted extensive exploration into the origins of chirality in nanoscale systems. While chirality is generally transferrable from the surface layer to the metal-ligand interface and kernel, we present here an alternative type of gold nanoclusters (138 gold core atoms with 48 2,4-dimethylbenzenethiolate surface ligands) whose inner structures are not asymmetrically induced by chiral patterns of the outermost aromatic substituents. This phenomenon can be explained by the highly dynamic behaviors of aromatic rings in the thiolates assembled via π - π stacking and C - H···π interactions. In addition to being a thiolate-protected nanocluster with uncoordinated surface gold atoms, the reported Au₁₃₈ motif expands the size range of gold nanoclusters having both molecular and metallic properties. Our current work introduces an important class of nanoclusters with intrinsic chirality from surface layers rather than inner structures and will aid in elucidating the transition of gold nanoclusters from their molecular to metallic states.

Ligand-Ligand-Interaction-Dominated Self-Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles at the Oil/Water Interface: An Atomic-Scale Simulation

The self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) into ordered superlattices is a powerful strategy to fabricate functional nanomaterials. Subtle variations in the interactions between NPs will influence the self-assembled superlattices. Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, we explore the self-assembly of 16 gold NPs, 4 nm in diameter, capped with ligands at the oil-water interface, and quantify the interactions between NPs at the atomic scale. We demonstrate that the interaction between capping ligands rather than that between NPs is dominant during the assembly process. For dodecanethiol (DDT)-capped Au NPs, the assembled superlattice is highly ordered in a close-packed configuration at a slow evaporation rate, while it is disordered at a fast evaporation rate. When replacing the capping ligands with stronger polarization than DDT molecules, the NPs form a robust ordered configuration at different evaporation rates due to the stronger electrostatic attraction between capping ligands from different NPs. Moreover, Au-Ag binary clusters exhibit similar assembly behavior with Au NPs. Our work uncovers the nonequilibrium nature of NP assembly at the atomic scale and would be helpful in rationally controlling NPs superlattice by changing passivating ligands, solvent evaporation rate, or both.

Chiral copper-hydride nanoclusters: synthesis, structure, and assembly

An effective strategy is developed to synthesize a novel and stable layered Cu nanocluster using a one-pot reduction method. The cluster, with a molecular formula of [Cu₁₄(^tBuS)₃(PPh₃)₇H₁₀]BF₄ which has been unambiguously characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, exhibits different structures from previously reported analogues with core-shell geometries. In the absence of chiral ligands, the cluster displays intrinsic chirality owing to the non-covalent ligand-ligand interactions (e.g., C-H⋯Cu interactions and C-H⋯π interactions) to lock the central copper core. The interlacing of chiral-cluster enantiomers forms a large cavity, which lays the foundation for a series of potential applications such as drug filling and gas adsorption. Moreover, the C-H⋯H-C interactions of phenyl groups between different cluster moieties promote the formation of a dextral helix and realization of the self-assembly of nanostructures.

An atomically precise Ag18Cu8 nanocluster with rich alkynyl-metal coordination structures and unique SbF6- assembling modes

Elucidating the coordination structures and assembling modes of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) remains a hot topic as it gives answers to the underlying mechanism of nanomaterials and bulk materials in terms of structure-property relationships. Here we report a novel silver-copper alloy NC featuring rich alkynyl-metal coordination modes and unique SbF₆^- assembling structures. The NC, with the composition of [Ag₁₈Cu₈(dppp)₄(^tBu-C₆H₄CC)₂₂](SbF₆)₄ (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)-propane), was prepared by a stepwise synthetic approach. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that such a NC featured a staircase-like Ag₁₈Cu₈ kernel, which was protected by hybrid alkynyl and dppp ligands in diverse coordination structures and multiple environments. The structural analysis also revealed the unique function of SbF₆^- in inducing the assembly of cluster moieties, highlighting the importance of counterions in assembling nanomolecules. The diverse coordination structures of the protective ligands with metal ions and the indispensable roles of counterions in assembling the cluster moieties have also been supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) studies, making it a model system to showcase the uniqueness of atomically precise metal NCs in illustrating the coordination chemistry of nanomaterials and bulk materials at the molecular level.

Regulating the assembly and expansion of the silver cluster from the Ag37 to Ag46 nanowheel driven by heteroanions

Precise control over the shape and size of metal nanoclusters through anion template-driven self-assembly is one of the key scientific goals in the nanocluster community, however, it is still not understood comprehensively. In this work, we report the controllable synthesis and atomically precise structures of silver nanowheels Ag37 and Ag46, using homo (Cl^- ions) and heteroanion (Cl^- and CrO₄ ^2- ions) template strategies, along with macrocyclic p-phenyl-thiacalix[4]arene and small ⁱPrS^- ligands. Structural analyses revealed that in Ag37, Cl^- ions serve as both local and global templates, whereas CrO₄ ^2- ions function as local and Cl^- ions as global templates in Ag46, resulting in a pentagonal nanowheel (Ag37) and a hexagonal (Ag46) nanowheel. The larger ionic size and more negative charges of CrO₄ ^2- ions than Cl^- ions offer more coordination sites for the silver atoms and are believed to be the key factors that drive the nanowheel core to expand significantly. Also, by taking advantage of the deep cavity of thiacalix[4]arene with an extended phenyl group, Ag46 has been used as a host material for dye adsorption depending on the charge and size of organic dyes. The successful use of heteroanions to control the expansion of well-defined silver nanowheels fills the knowledge gap in understanding the directing role of heteroanions in dictating the shape and size of nanoclusters at the atomic level.

Supercrystal engineering of atomically precise gold nanoparticles promoted by surface dynamics

The controllable packing of functional nanoparticles (NPs) into crystalline lattices is of interest in the development of NP-based materials. Here we demonstrate that the size, morphology and symmetry of such supercrystals can be tailored by adjusting the surface dynamics of their constituent NPs. In the presence of excess tetraethylammonium cations, atomically precise [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]^- NPs (where SR is a thiolate ligand) can be crystallized into micrometre-sized hexagonal rod-like supercrystals, rather than as face-centred-cubic superlattices otherwise. Experimental characterization supported by theoretical modelling shows that the rod-like crystals consist of polymeric chains in which Au₂₅ NPs are held together by a linear SR-[Au(I)-SR]₄ interparticle linker. This linker is formed by conjugation of two dynamically detached SR-[Au(I)-SR]₂ protecting motifs from adjacent Au₂₅ particles, and is stabilized by a combination of CH⋯π and ion-pairing interactions between tetraethylammonium cations and SR ligands. The symmetry, morphology and size of the resulting supercrystals can be systematically tuned by changing the concentration and type of the tetraalkylammonium cations.

Platonic and Archimedean solids in discrete metal-containing clusters

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

Structural Engineering toward Gold Nanocluster Catalysis

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters provide great opportunities to explore the relationship between the structure and properties of nanogold catalysts. A nanocluster consists of a metal core and a surface ligand shell, and both the core and shell have significant effects on the catalytic properties. Thanks to their precise structures, the active metal site of the clusters can be readily identified and the effects of ligands on catalysis can be disclosed. In this Minireview, we summarize recent advances in catalytic research of gold nanoclusters, emphasizing four strategies for constructing open metal sites, including by post-treatment, the bulky ligands strategy, the surface geometric mismatch method, and heteroatom doping procedures. We also discuss the effects of ligands on the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of gold cluster catalysts. Finally, we present future challenges relating to gold cluster catalysis.

Hierarchically engineered nanostructures from compositionally anisotropic molecular building blocks

The inability to synthesize hierarchical structures with independently tailored nanoscale and mesoscale features limits the discovery of next-generation multifunctional materials. Here we present a predictable molecular self-assembly strategy to craft nanostructured materials with a variety of phase-in-phase hierarchical morphologies. The compositionally anisotropic building blocks employed in the assembly process are formed by multicomponent graft block copolymers containing sequence-defined side chains. The judicious design of various structural parameters in the graft block copolymers enables broadly tunable compositions, morphologies and lattice parameters across the nanoscale and mesoscale in the assembled structures. Our strategy introduces advanced design principles for the efficient creation of complex hierarchical structures and provides a facile synthetic platform to access nanomaterials with multiple precisely integrated functionalities.

Modular Cocrystallization of Customized Carboranylthiolate-Protected Copper Nanoclusters via Host-Guest Interactions

Cocrystals containing distinct atom-precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) provide an opportunity to elucidate the crystallization process, architectural complexity, and newly emerging properties of condensed-state metal NC-assembled materials. However, the controllable preparation of such cocrystals is still challenging. Herein, we present a modular strategy to cocrystallize two customized carboranylthiolate-protected copper NCs, Cu₁₄(C₂B₁₀H₁₀S₂)₆(CH₃CN)₆ (Cu₁₄) and Cu₁₆(C₂B₁₀H₁₀S₂)₈ (Cu₁₆), which adopt matched surface patterns by host-guest chemistry. The Cu₁₄·Cu₁₆ cocrystals show integrated UV-vis adsorption and dual emission stemming from the Cu₁₄ and Cu₁₆ NCs. Moreover, the component NCs are selectively doped by gold atoms, which is a promising way to incorporate diverse properties of metal cluster-based cocrystals. This work not only provides a copper NC-based cocrystal for a profound study on a condensed-state copper nanomaterial but also develops a modular strategy for the cocrystallization of metal NCs.

Contact Enhancement in Nanoparticle Assemblies through Electrophoretic Deposition

A strong interparticle connection needs to be realized to harvest unique nanoscale features of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) in film structures. Constructing a strong contact and adhesion of NPs on a substrate is an essential process for improved NP film properties, and therefore, its key factors should be determined by understanding the NP deposition mechanism. Herein, we investigated the critical factors leading to the robust and strong adherence of the film structure and revealed that the NP deposition mechanism involved the role of surfactant ligands during electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The high amount of surfactant ligand treatment results in a high deposition rate of NPs in the early stage; however, the ligand treatment does not influence the deposition rate in the later stage. Furthermore, the deposition mechanism is found to involve three steps during EPD: island formation, lateral growth, and layer-by-layer deposition. Rapid NP deposition kinetics controlled by ligand treatments demonstrate the strong contact and adhesion of NP film structures; they are characterized by the fast charge transfer, low resistivity, and rigid NP layers of the Cu_2-x S NP-based devices. Finally, the controlled role of surfactant ligands in EPD enables design of high-performance nanostructured NP film devices with contact enhancement.

Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction over Atomically Precise Metal Nanoclusters Protected by Organic Ligands

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR) is a promising method to realize carbon recycling and sustainable development because of its mild reaction conditions and capability to utilize the electric power generated by renewable energy such as solar, wind, or tidal energy to produce high-value-added liquid fuels and chemicals. However, it is still a great challenge to deeply understand the reaction mechanism of CO₂RRs involving multiple chemical processes and multiple products due to the complexity of the traditional catalyst's surface. Organic ligand-protected metal nanoclusters (NCs) with accurate compositions and definite atom packing structures show advantages for revealing the reaction mechanism of CO₂RRs. This Review focuses on the recent progress in CO₂RRs catalyzed by atomically precise metal NCs, including gold, copper, and silver NCs. Particularly, the influences of charge, ligand, surface structure, doping of Au NCs, and binders on the CO₂RR are discussed in detail. Meanwhile the reaction mechanisms of CO₂RRs including the active sites and the key reaction intermediates are also discussed. It is expected that progress in this research area could promote the development of metal NCs and CO₂RRs.

Biomimetic Self-Assembling Metal-Organic Architectures with Non-Iridescent Structural Coloration for Synergetic Antibacterial and Osteogenic Activity of Implants

Materials in nature feature versatile and programmable interactions to render macroscopic architectures with multiscale structural arrangements. By rationally combining metal-carboxylate and metal-organophosphate coordination interactions, Au₂₅(MHA)₁₈ (MHA, 6-mercaptohexanoic acid) nanocluster self-assembled structural color coating films and phytic acid (PA)-metal coordination complexes are sequentially constructed on the surface of titanium implants. The Lewis acid-base coordination principle applies for these metal-organic coordination networks. The isotropic arrangement of nanoclusters with a short-range order is investigated via grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The integration of robust M-O (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) and labile Cu-O coordination bonds with high connectivity of Au₂₅(MHA)₁₈ nanoclusters enables these artificial photonic structures to achieve a combination of mechanical stability and bacteriostatic activity. Moreover, the colorless and transparent PA-metal complex layer allows the viewing of the structural color and surface wettability switching to hydrophilic and makes feasible the interfacial biomineralization of hydroxyapatite. Collectively, these modular metal-organic coordination-driven assemblies are predictive and rational material design strategies with tunable hierarchy and diversity. The complete metal-organic architectures will not only help improve the physicochemical properties of the bone-implant interface with synergistic antibacterial and osseointegration activities but also can boost surface engineering of medical metal implants.

Face-Centered Cubic Silver Nanoclusters Consolidated with Tetradentate Formamidinate Ligands

Growing attention has been paid to nanoclusters with face-centered cubic (fcc) metal kernels, due to its structural similarity to bulk metals. We demonstrate that the use of tetradentate formamidinate ligands facilitate the construction of two fcc silver nanoclusters: [Ag₅₂(5-F-dpf)₁₆Cl₄](SbF₆)₂ (Ag₅₂, 5-F-Hdpf = N,N'-di(5-fluoro-2-pyridinyl)formamidine) and [Ag₅₃(5-Me-dpf)₁₈](NO₃)₅ (Ag₅₃, 5-Me-Hdpf = N,N'-di(5-methyl-2-pyridinyl)formamidine). Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed that the silver atoms in both clusters are in a layer-by-layer arrangement, which can be viewed as a portion of the fcc packing of silver. The nitrogen donors of amidinate ligands selectively passivate the {111} facets. All silver atoms are involved in the fcc packing, that is, no staple motifs are observed due to the linear arrangement of the four N donors of the dpf ligands. The characteristic optical absorption bands of Ag₅₂ and Ag₅₃ have been studied with a time-dependent density functional theory. This work provides a facile access to assembling atomically precise fcc-type nanoclusters and shows the prospect of amidinates as protecting ligands in synthesizing metal nanoclusters.

Assembly-induced spin transfer and distance-dependent spin coupling in atomically precise AgCu nanoclusters

Nanoparticle assembly paves the way for unanticipated properties and applications from the nanoscale to the macroscopic world. However, the study of such material systems is greatly inhibited due to the obscure compositions and structures of nanoparticles (especially the surface structures). The assembly of atomically precise nanoparticles is challenging, and such an assembly of nanoparticles with metal core sizes strictly larger than 1 nm has not been achieved yet. Here, we introduced an on-site synthesis-and-assembly strategy, and successfully obtained a straight-chain assembly structure consisting of Ag₇₇Cu₂₂(CHT)₄₈ (CHT: cyclohexanethiolate) nanoparticles with two nanoparticles separated by one S atom, as revealed by mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Although Ag₇₇Cu₂₂(CHT)₄₈ bears one unpaired shell-closing electron, the magnetic moment is found to be mainly localized at the S linker with magnetic isotropy, and the sulfur radicals were experimentally verified and found to be unstable after disassembly, demonstrating assembly-induced spin transfer. Besides, spin nanoparticles are found to couple and lose their paramagnetism at sufficiently short inter-nanoparticle distance, namely, the spin coupling depends on the inter-nanoparticle distance. However, it is not found that the spin coupling leads to the nanoparticle growth.

The assembly of atomically precise clusters into ordered superstructures enables new functional material designs. Here, the authors propose a strategy for linear arrangements of AgCu clusters and explore the consequent transfer and coupling of magnetic spins.

Robust Enantiomeric Two-Dimensional Assembly of Atomically Precise Silver Clusters

The facile syntheses of enantiomeric atomically precise silver clusters starting from achiral ligands remain a substantial challenge to explore. In this work, a pair of atomically precise enantiomers of R/S-[Ag₁₇Cl(ⁱPrS)₉S(CH₃COO)₅H₂O] (R/S-Ag₁₇, ⁱPrS = isopropanethiolate) clusters have been synthesized using a viable solvothermal approach. The chirality of the resulting enantiomeric R/S-Ag₁₇ clusters is attributed to the asymmetric arrangement of surface achiral ligands. Both R/S-Ag₁₇ enantiomers could form the two-dimensional (2D) assemblies via intercluster interactions of basic building blocks containing Ag₁₆S₈ moieties, ⁱPrS-Ag motifs, and S^2- linkers. Such a small ligand-induced 2D assembly greatly contributes to the enhancement of thermal stability and photocatalytic activity of R/S-Ag₁₇ clusters, providing possibilities for exploring robust coinage cluster-based assembly with attractive catalytic properties.

3D Optical Heterostructure Patterning by Spatially Allocating Nanoblocks on a Printed Matrix

Heterostructures have attracted enormous interest due to the properties arising from the coupling and synergizing between multiscale structures and the promising applications in electronics, mechanics, and optics. However, it is challenging for current technologies to precisely integrate cross-scale micro/nanomaterials in three dimensions (3D). Herein, we realize the precise spatial allocation of nanoblocks on micromatrices and programmable 3D optical heterostructure patterning via printing-assisted self-assembly. This bottom-up approach fully exploits the advantages of printing in on-demand patterning, low cost, and mass production, as well as the merits of solution-based colloidal assembly for simple structuring and high-precision regulating, which facilitates the patterned integration of multiscale materials. Importantly, the luminescent nanoparticle assembly can be accurately coupled to the dye-doped polymer matrix by regulating the interface wettability, enabling facile multicolor tuning in a single heterostructure. Thus, the heterostructure can be specially encoded for anticounterfeiting and encryption applications due to the morphology-dependent and interface-coupling-induced luminescence. Moreover, with the capability to achieve single-nanoparticle resolution, these findings have great potential for designing photonic superstructures and advanced optical devices.

Single-Atom-Kernelled Nanocluster Catalyst

To propose the concept of single-atom-kernelled nanocluster, we synthesized a Pd-based trimetal nanocluster with a single-Ag atom-kernel for the first time by introducing some steric hindrance factors and employing a joint alloying strategy that combines the coreduction with an antigalvanic reduction (AGR). Although the AGR-derived Pd-based trimetal nanoclusters with single-silver atom kernels have low contents of gold, they show higher activity and selectivity than those of the bimetal precursor nanocluster in the electrocatalytical reduction of CO₂ to CO. Furthermore, it is revealed that the kernel single atoms from both Au₄Pd₆(TBBT)₁₂ and Au₃AgPd₆(TBBT)₁₂ are not the active sites for catalysis, but greatly influence the catalytical performance by effecting the electronic configuration. Thus, it is demonstrated that the single-atom-kernelled nanocluster can not only improve the precious metal utilization (even to 100%) but also better the properties and provide insight into the structure-property correlation for metal nanoclusters.

Compact accumulation of superatomic silver nanoclusters with an octahedral Ag6 core ligated by trithiane

Two superatomic solids, a bi-cluster compound, [Ag₆(3S)₄(OTf)₄][Ag₆(3S)₄(CC^tBu)₄](OTf)₂ [Ag6(0)·Ag6(i)], and a homologous nanocluster, [Ag₆(3S)₄(tfa)₄] (Ag6), have been described here, which are both close-packed in the crystal lattice with the ligation of trithiane. Their aggregation-state-dependent absorption and fluorescence properties could be ascribed to the enhanced intercluster charge-transfer in the crystalline state.

Visible-Light Copper Nanocluster Catalysis for the C-N Coupling of Aryl Chlorides at Room Temperature

Activation of aryl chlorides in cross-coupling reactions is a long-standing challenge in organic synthesis that is of great interest to industry. Ultrasmall (<3 nm), atomically precise nanoclusters (NCs) are considered one of the most promising catalysts due to their high surface area and unsaturated active sites. Herein, we introduce a copper nanocluster-based catalyst, [Cu₆₁(S^tBu)₂₆S₆Cl₆H₁₄] (Cu₆₁NC) that enables C-N bond-forming reactions of aryl chlorides under visible-light irradiation at room temperature. A range of N-heterocyclic nucleophiles and electronically and sterically diverse aryl/hetero chlorides react in this new Cu₆₁NC-catalyzed process to afford the C-N coupling products in good yields. Mechanistic studies indicate that a single-electron-transfer (SET) process between the photoexcited Cu₆₁NC complex and aryl halide enables the C-N-arylation reaction.
