Promotion of superconductivity in magic-angle graphene multilayers

A controllable interlayer shielding effect in twisted multilayer graphene quantum dots

When multilayer graphene (MLG) is subjected to a vertical electric field, electrons traverse across the layers and its interlayer electrical conductance and shielding effect exhibit remarkable diversity, leading to exotic phenomena and diverse applications in photoelectric devices. The rearrangement of electrons induced by this external field is aptly described by polarizability, which quantifies the electronic response to the applied field. In this work, we have developed a polarizability decomposition scheme based on field-induced electron density variations computed using a first-principles approach. This scheme allows us to isolate the inter- and intra-layer contributions from the total polarizability of twisted multilayer graphene (TMG) quantum dots. The inter- and intra-layer counterparts reflect the charge transfer (CT) and field shielding effects among the layers, respectively. While the strongest shield effect is observed between the outermost two layers, the largest CT change is noted in the outermost layers, but small or nearly zero CT changes in the inner layers. Significant CT and shielding effects are observed not only in strongly coupled Bernal stacking, but also in the structures misaligned from full-(AA)N stacking by a small and size-dependent twist angle. The dielectric behaviors of the TMG quantum dots of a few layers are layer-dependent and different from those of typical dielectrics. Moreover, both the shielding and CT effects exhibit variation with thickness, twist angle and disc size, suggesting controllable conductive/dielectric conversion in the vertical direction. Considering the inter- and intralayer polarizability, our study addresses the precise modulation of interlayer conductance and shielding effect for TMG quantum dots, essential for microstructure design and performance manipulation of MLG-based photoelectric devices.

Emergent phases in graphene flat bands

Electronic correlations in two-dimensional materials play a crucial role in stabilising emergent phases of matter. The realisation of correlation-driven phenomena in graphene has remained a longstanding goal, primarily due to the absence of strong electron-electron interactions within its low-energy bands. In this context, magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has recently emerged as a novel platform featuring correlated phases favoured by the low-energy flat bands of the underlying moiré superlattice. Notably, the observation of correlated insulators and superconductivity, and the interplay between these phases have garnered significant attention. A wealth of correlated phases with unprecedented tunability was discovered subsequently, including orbital ferromagnetism, Chern insulators, strange metallicity, density waves, and nematicity. However, a comprehensive understanding of these closely competing phases remains elusive. The ability to controllably twist and stack multiple graphene layers has enabled the creation of a whole new family of moiré superlattices with myriad properties. Here, we review the progress and development achieved so far, encompassing the rich phase diagrams offered by these graphene-based moiré systems. Additionally, we discuss multiple phases recently observed in non-moiré multilayer graphene systems. Finally, we outline future opportunities and challenges for the exploration of hidden phases in this new generation of moiré materials.

Evolution of superconductivity in twisted graphene multilayers

The group of moiré graphene superconductors keeps growing, and by now it contains twisted graphene multilayers as well as untwisted stacks. We analyze here the contribution of long-range charge fluctuations in the superconductivity of twisted double bilayers and helical trilayers, and compare the results to twisted bilayer graphene. A diagrammatic approach which depends on a few, well-known parameters is used. We find that the critical temperature and the order parameter differ significantly between twisted double bilayers and helical trilayers on one hand, and twisted bilayer graphene on the other. This trend, consistent with experiments, can be associated with the role played by moiré Umklapp processes in the different systems.

Collective Charge Excitations between Moiré Minibands in Twisted WSe_{2} Bilayers Probed with Resonant Inelastic Light Scattering

We establish low-temperature resonant inelastic light scattering (RILS) spectroscopy as a tool to probe the formation of a series of moiré bands in twisted WSe_{2} bilayers by accessing collective inter-moiré-band excitations (IMBEs). We observe resonances in RILS spectra at energies in agreement with inter-moiré-band transitions obtained from an ab initio based continuum model. Transitions between the first and second moiré band for a twist angle of about 8° are reported and between the first and the third, and higher bands for a twist of about 3°. The signatures from IMBE for the latter highlight a strong departure from parabolic bands with flat minibands exhibiting very high density of states in accord with theory. These observations allow one to quantify the transition energies at the K point where the states relevant for correlation physics are hosted.

Enhancing shift current response via virtual multiband transitions

Materials exhibiting a significant shift current response could potentially outperform conventional solar cell materials. The myriad of factors governing shift-current response, however, poses significant challenges in finding such strong shift-current materials. Here we propose a general design principle that exploits inter-orbital mixing to excite virtual multiband transitions in materials with multiple flat bands to achieve an enhanced shift current response. We further relate this design principle to maximizing Wannier function spread as expressed through the formalism of quantum geometry. We demonstrate the viability of our design using a 1D stacked Rice-Mele model. Furthermore, we consider a concrete material realization - alternating angle twisted multilayer graphene (TMG) - a natural platform to experimentally realize such an effect. We identify a set of twist angles at which the shift current response is maximized via virtual transitions for each multilayer graphene and highlight the importance of TMG as a promising material to achieve an enhanced shift current response at terahertz frequencies. Our proposed mechanism also applies to other 2D systems and can serve as a guiding principle for designing multiband systems that exhibit an enhanced shift current response.

Tunable superconductivity in electron- and hole-doped Bernal bilayer graphene

Graphene-based, high-quality, two-dimensional electronic systems have emerged as a highly tunable platform for studying superconductivity1-21. Specifically, superconductivity has been observed in both electron- and hole-doped twisted graphene moiré systems1-17, whereas in crystalline graphene systems, superconductivity has so far been observed only in hole-doped rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG)18 and hole-doped Bernal bilayer graphene (BBG)19-21. Recently, enhanced superconductivity has been demonstrated20,21 in BBG because of the proximity to a monolayer WSe2. Here we report the observation of superconductivity and a series of flavour-symmetry-breaking phases in electron- and hole-doped BBG/WSe2 devices by electrostatic doping. The strength of the observed superconductivity is tunable by applied vertical electric fields. The maximum Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature for the electron- and hole-doped superconductivity is about 210 mK and 400 mK, respectively. Superconductivities emerge only when the applied electric fields drive the BBG electron or hole wavefunctions towards the WSe2 layer, underscoring the importance of the WSe2 layer in the observed superconductivity. The hole-doped superconductivity violates the Pauli paramagnetic limit, consistent with an Ising-like superconductor. By contrast, the electron-doped superconductivity obeys the Pauli limit, although the proximity-induced Ising spin-orbit coupling is also notable in the conduction band. Our findings highlight the rich physics associated with the conduction band in BBG, paving the way for further studies into the superconducting mechanisms of crystalline graphene and the development of superconductor devices based on BBG.

Interplay of Landau Quantization and Interminivalley Scatterings in a Weakly Coupled Moiré Superlattice

Double-layer quantum systems are promising platforms for realizing novel quantum phases. Here, we report a study of quantum oscillations (QOs) in a weakly coupled double-layer system composed of a large-angle twisted-double-bilayer graphene (TDBG). We quantify the interlayer coupling strength by measuring the interlayer capacitance from the QOs pattern at low temperatures, revealing electron-hole asymmetry. At high temperatures when SdHOs are thermally smeared, we observe resistance peaks when Landau levels (LLs) from two moiré minivalleys are aligned, regardless of carrier density; eventually, it results in a 2-fold increase of oscillating frequency in D, serving as compelling evidence of the magneto-intersub-band oscillations (MISOs) in double-layer systems. The temperature dependence of MISOs suggests that electron-electron interactions play a crucial role and the scattering times obtained from MISO thermal damping are correlated with the interlayer coupling strength. Our study reveals intriguing interplays among Landau quantization, moiré band structure, and scatterings.

Uncovering the spin ordering in magic-angle graphene via edge state equilibration

The flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) provide an especially rich arena to investigate interaction-driven ground states. While progress has been made in identifying the correlated insulators and their excitations at commensurate moiré filling factors, the spin-valley polarizations of the topological states that emerge at high magnetic field remain unknown. Here we introduce a technique based on twist-decoupled van der Waals layers that enables measurement of their electronic band structure and-by studying the backscattering between counter-propagating edge states-the determination of the relative spin polarization of their edge modes. We find that the symmetry-broken quantum Hall states that extend from the charge neutrality point in MATBG are spin unpolarized at even integer filling factors. The measurements also indicate that the correlated Chern insulator emerging from half filling of the flat valence band is spin unpolarized and suggest that its conduction band counterpart may be spin polarized.

Optical properties and plasmons in moiré structures

The discoveries of numerous exciting phenomena in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) are stimulating significant investigations on moiré structures that possess a tunable moiré potential. Optical response can provide insights into the electronic structures and transport phenomena of non-twisted and twisted moiré structures. In this article, we review both experimental and theoretical studies of optical properties such as optical conductivity, dielectric function, non-linear optical response, and plasmons in moiré structures composed of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and/or transition metal dichalcogenides. Firstly, a comprehensive introduction to the widely employed methodology on optical properties is presented. After, moiré potential induced optical conductivity and plasmons in non-twisted structures are reviewed, such as single layer graphene-hBN, bilayer graphene-hBN and graphene-metal moiré heterostructures. Next, recent investigations of twist-angle dependent optical response and plasmons are addressed in twisted moiré structures. Additionally, we discuss how optical properties and plasmons could contribute to the understanding of the many-body effects and superconductivity observed in moiré structures.

Superconductivity in twisted double bilayer graphene stabilized by WSe2

Identifying the essential components of superconductivity in graphene-based systems remains a critical problem in two-dimensional materials research. This field is connected to the mysteries that underpin investigations of unconventional superconductivity in condensed-matter physics. Superconductivity has been observed in magic-angle twisted stacks of monolayer graphene but conspicuously not in twisted stacks of bilayer graphene, although both systems host topological flat bands and symmetry-broken states. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) in proximity to WSe2. Samples with twist angles 1.24° and 1.37° superconduct in small pockets of the gate-tuned phase diagram within the valence and conduction band, respectively. Superconductivity emerges from unpolarized phases near van Hove singularities and next to regions with broken isospin symmetry. Our results show the correlation between a high density of states and the emergence of superconductivity in TDBG while revealing a possible role for isospin fluctuations in the pairing.

Imaging inter-valley coherent order in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene

Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) exhibits a range of strongly correlated electronic phases that spontaneously break its underlying symmetries1,2. Here we investigate the correlated phases of MATTG using scanning tunnelling microscopy and identify marked signatures of interaction-driven spatial symmetry breaking. In low-strain samples, over a filling range of about two to three electrons or holes per moiré unit cell, we observe atomic-scale reconstruction of the graphene lattice that accompanies a correlated gap in the tunnelling spectrum. This short-scale restructuring appears as a Kekulé supercell-implying spontaneous inter-valley coherence between electrons-and persists in a wide range of magnetic fields and temperatures that coincide with the development of the gap. Large-scale maps covering several moiré unit cells further reveal a slow evolution of the Kekulé pattern, indicating that atomic-scale reconstruction coexists with translation symmetry breaking at a much longer moiré scale. We use auto-correlation and Fourier analyses to extract the intrinsic periodicity of these phases and find that they are consistent with the theoretically proposed incommensurate Kekulé spiral order3,4. Moreover, we find that the wavelength characterizing moiré-scale modulations monotonically decreases with hole doping away from half-filling of the bands and depends weakly on the magnetic field. Our results provide essential insights into the nature of the correlated phases of MATTG in the presence of strain and indicate that superconductivity can emerge from an inter-valley coherent parent state.

In Situ Twistronics: A New Platform Based on Superlubricity

Twistronics, an emerging field focused on exploring the unique electrical properties induced by twist interface in graphene multilayers, has garnered significant attention in recent years. The general manipulation of twist angle depends on the assembly of van der Waals (vdW) layered materials, which has led to the discovery of unconventional superconductivity, ferroelectricity, and nonlinear optics, thereby expanding the realm of twistronics. Recently, in situ tuning of interlayer conductivity in vdW layered materials has been achieved based on scanning probe microscope. In this Perspective, the advancements in in situ twistronics are focused on by reviewing the state-of-the-art in situ manipulating technology, discussing the underlying mechanism based on the concept of structural superlubricity, and exploiting the real-time twistronic tests under scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is shown that the real-time manipulation under SEM allows for visualizing and monitoring the interface status during in situ twistronic testing. By harnessing the unique tribological properties of vdW layered materials, this novel platform not only enhances the fabrication of twistronic devices but also facilitates the fundamental understanding of interface phenomena in vdW layered materials. Moreover, this platform holds great promise for the application of twistronic-mechanical systems, providing avenues for the integration of twistronics into various mechanical frameworks.

Electronic properties and carrier mobilities of nanocarbons formed by non-benzoidal building blocks

Exotic 1D and 2D carbon nanostructures have been grown in the laboratory in the last few years by means of surface-assisted chemical routes. In these processes, the strategical choice of a molecular precursor plays a dominant role in the determination of the synthesized nanocarbon. Further variations of these techniques are able to produce non-benzoidal carbon quantum-dots (QDs). Considering this experimental scenario as motivation, we propose a series of nanoribbon systems based on concatenating recently synthesized carbon QDs containing pentagonal, hexagonal, and heptagonal rings. We use density functional theory (DFT) simulations to reveal their properties can range from metallic to semiconducting depending on the concatenation hierarchy used to form the nanoribbons. This DFT implementation is based on a LCAO approach to describe valence wavefunctions and most of the simulations employ the PBE-GGA functional. Since this functional is known to underestimate band gaps, we also use the B3LYP functional in a plane-wave DFT approach for a selected case for comparison purposes. These systems show a different gap versus width relationship compared to conventional graphene nanoribbons setups and a particular set of carrier mobility values. We further discuss the interplay between the QD's frontier states and the electronic properties of the nanoribbons in light of their structural details.

Gate-Defined Topological Josephson Junctions in Bernal Bilayer Graphene

Recent experiments on Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) deposited on monolayer WSe_{2} revealed robust, ultraclean superconductivity coexisting with sizable induced spin-orbit coupling. Here, we propose BLG/WSe_{2} as a platform to engineer gate-defined planar topological Josephson junctions, where the normal and superconducting regions descend from a common material. More precisely, we show that if superconductivity in BLG/WSe_{2} is gapped and emerges from a parent state with intervalley coherence, then Majorana zero-energy modes can form in the barrier region upon applying weak in-plane magnetic fields. Our results spotlight a potential pathway for "internally engineered" topological superconductivity that minimizes detrimental disorder and orbital-magnetic-field effects.

A quantum ruler for orbital magnetism in moiré quantum matter

For almost a century, magnetic oscillations have been a powerful "quantum ruler" for measuring Fermi surface topology. In this study, we used Landau-level spectroscopy to unravel the energy-resolved valley-contrasting orbital magnetism and large orbital magnetic susceptibility that contribute to the energies of Landau levels of twisted double-bilayer graphene. These orbital magnetism effects led to substantial deviations from the standard Onsager relation, which manifested as a breakdown in scaling of Landau-level orbits. These substantial magnetic responses emerged from the nontrivial quantum geometry of the electronic structure and the large length scale of the moiré lattice potential. Going beyond traditional measurements, Landau-level spectroscopy performed with a scanning tunneling microscope offers a complete quantum ruler that resolves the full energy dependence of orbital magnetic properties in moiré quantum matter.

Signatures of Cooper pair dynamics and quantum-critical superconductivity in tunable carrier bands

Different superconducting pairing mechanisms are markedly distinct in the underlying Cooper pair kinematics. Quantum-critical soft modes drive pairing interactions in which the pair scattering processes are highly collinear and can be classified into two categories: forward scattering and backscattering. Conversely, in conventional phonon mechanisms, Cooper pair scattering is of a generic noncollinear character. In this study, we present a method to discern the kinematic type by observing the evolution of superconductivity while adjusting the Fermi surface geometry. To demonstrate our approach, we utilize the recently reported phase diagrams of untwisted graphene multilayers. Our analysis connects the emergence of superconductivity at "ghost crossings" of Fermi surfaces in distinct valleys to the pair kinematics of a backscattering type. Together with the observed nonmonotonic behavior of superconductivity near its onset (sharp rise followed by a drop), it lends strong support to a particular quantum-critical superconductivity scenario in which pairing is driven by intervalley coherence fluctuations. These findings offer direct insights into the genesis of pairing in these systems, providing compelling evidence for the electron-electron interactions driving superconductivity. More broadly, our work highlights the potential of tuning bands via ghost crossings as a promising means of boosting superconductivity.

Thickness-Dependent Superconductivity in a Layered Electride on Silicon

Layered materials exhibit a plethora of fascinating properties. The challenge is to make the materials into epitaxial films, preferably integrated with mature technological platforms to facilitate their potential applications. Progress in this direction can establish the film thickness as a valuable parameter to control various phenomena, superconductivity in particular. Here, a synthetic route to epitaxial films of SrAlSi, a layered superconducting electride, on silicon is designed. A set of films ranging in thickness is synthesized employing a silicene-based template. Their structure and superconductivity are explored by a combination of techniques. Two regimes of TC dependence on the film thickness are identified, the coherence length being the crossover parameter. The results can be extended to syntheses of other honeycomb-lattice ternary compounds on Si or Ge exhibiting superconducting, magnetic, and other properties.

Untwisting Moiré Physics: Almost Ideal Bands and Fractional Chern Insulators in Periodically Strained Monolayer Graphene

Moiré systems have emerged in recent years as a rich platform to study strong correlations. Here, we will propose a simple, experimentally feasible setup based on periodically strained graphene that reproduces several key aspects of twisted moiré heterostructures-but without introducing a twist. We consider a monolayer graphene sheet subject to a C_{2}-breaking periodic strain-induced pseudomagnetic field with period L_{M}≫a, along with a scalar potential of the same period. This system has almost ideal flat bands with valley-resolved Chern number ±1, where the deviation from ideal band geometry is analytically controlled and exponentially small in the dimensionless ratio (L_{M}/l_{B})^{2}, where l_{B} is the magnetic length corresponding to the maximum value of the pseudomagnetic field. Moreover, the scalar potential can tune the bandwidth far below the Coulomb scale, making this a very promising platform for strongly interacting topological phases. Using a combination of strong-coupling theory and self-consistent Hartree-Fock, we find quantum anomalous Hall states at integer fillings. At fractional filling, exact diagonaliztion reveals a fractional Chern insulator at parameters in the experimentally feasible range. Overall, we find that this system has larger interaction-induced gaps, smaller quasiparticle dispersion, and enhanced tunability compared to twisted graphene systems, even in their ideal limit.

Chemical Potential Characterization of Symmetry-Breaking Phases in a Rhombohedral Trilayer Graphene

Rhombohedral trilayer graphene has recently emerged as a natural flat-band platform for studying interaction-driven symmetry-breaking phases. The displacement field (D) can further flatten the band to enhance the density of states, thereby controlling the electronic correlation that tips the energy balance between spin and valley degrees of freedom. To characterize the energy competition, chemical potential measurement─a direct thermodynamic probe of Fermi surfaces─is highly demanding to be conducted under a constant D. In this work, we characterize D-dependent isospin flavor polarization, where electronic states with isospin degeneracies of one and two can be identified. We also developed a method to measure the chemical potential at a fixed D, allowing for the extraction of energy variation during phase transitions. Furthermore, symmetry breaking could also be invoked in Landau levels, manifesting as quantum Hall ferromagnetism. Our work opens more opportunities for the thermodynamic characterization of displacement-field tuned van der Waals heterostructures.

Polarizability characteristics of twisted bilayer graphene quantum dots in the absence of periodic moiré potential

Recent studies have documented a rich phenomenology in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), which is significantly relevant to interlayer electronic coupling, in particular to the cases under an applied electric field. While polarizability measures the response of electrons against applied fields, this work adopts a unique strategy of decomposing global polarizability into distributional contributions to access the interlayer polarization in TBG, as a function of varying twisting angles (θ). Through the construction of a model of twisted graphene quantum dots, we assess distributional polarizability at the first-principles level. Our findings demonstrate that the polarizability perpendicular to the graphene plates can be decomposed into intralayer dipoles and interlayer charge-transfer (CT) components, the latter of which provides an explicit measurement of the interlayer coupling strength and charge transfer potential. Our analysis further reveals that interlayer polarizability dominates the polarizability variation during twisting. Intriguingly, the largest interlayer polarizability and CT driven by an external field occur in the misaligned structures with a size-dependent small angle corresponding to the first appearance of AB stacking, rather than the well-recognized Bernal structures. A derived equation is then employed to address the size dependence on the angle corresponding to the largest values in interlayer polarizability and CT. Our investigation not only characterizes the CT features in the interlayer polarizability of TBG quantum dots, but also sheds light on the existence of the strongest interlayer coupling and charge transfer at small twist angles in the presence of an external electric field, thereby providing a comprehensive understanding of the novel properties of graphene-based nanomaterials.

Superconductivity and strong interactions in a tunable moiré quasicrystal

Electronic states in quasicrystals generally preclude a Bloch description1, rendering them fascinating and enigmatic. Owing to their complexity and scarcity, quasicrystals are underexplored relative to periodic and amorphous structures. Here we introduce a new type of highly tunable quasicrystal easily assembled from periodic components. By twisting three layers of graphene with two different twist angles, we form two mutually incommensurate moiré patterns. In contrast to many common atomic-scale quasicrystals2,3, the quasiperiodicity in our system is defined on moiré length scales of several nanometres. This 'moiré quasicrystal' allows us to tune the chemical potential and thus the electronic system between a periodic-like regime at low energies and a strongly quasiperiodic regime at higher energies, the latter hosting a large density of weakly dispersing states. Notably, in the quasiperiodic regime, we observe superconductivity near a flavour-symmetry-breaking phase transition4,5, the latter indicative of the important role that electronic interactions play in that regime. The prevalence of interacting phenomena in future systems with in situ tunability is not only useful for the study of quasiperiodic systems but may also provide insights into electronic ordering in related periodic moiré crystals6-12. We anticipate that extending this platform to engineer quasicrystals by varying the number of layers and twist angles, and by using different two-dimensional components, will lead to a new family of quantum materials to investigate the properties of strongly interacting quasicrystals.

Mixed-dimensional moiré systems of twisted graphitic thin films

Moiré patterns formed by stacking atomically thin van der Waals crystals with a relative twist angle can give rise to notable new physical properties1,2. The study of moiré materials has so far been limited to structures comprising no more than a few van der Waals sheets, because a moiré pattern localized to a single two-dimensional interface is generally assumed to be incapable of appreciably modifying the properties of a bulk three-dimensional crystal. Here, we perform transport measurements of dual-gated devices constructed by slightly rotating a monolayer graphene sheet atop a thin bulk graphite crystal. We find that the moiré potential transforms the electronic properties of the entire bulk graphitic thin film. At zero and in small magnetic fields, transport is mediated by a combination of gate-tuneable moiré and graphite surface states, as well as coexisting semimetallic bulk states that do not respond to gating. At high field, the moiré potential hybridizes with the graphitic bulk states due to the unique properties of the two lowest Landau bands of graphite. These Landau bands facilitate the formation of a single quasi-two-dimensional hybrid structure in which the moiré and bulk graphite states are inextricably mixed. Our results establish twisted graphene-graphite as the first in a new class of mixed-dimensional moiré materials.

Junctions and Superconducting Symmetry in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Junctions provide a wealth of information on the symmetry of the order parameter of superconductors. We analyze junctions between a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and superconducting twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and TBG Josephson junctions (JJs). We compare superconducting phases that are even or odd under valley exchange (s- or f-wave). The critical current in mixed (s and f) JJs strongly depends on the angle between the junction and the lattice. In STM-TBG junctions, due to Andreev reflection, the f-wave leads to a prominent peak in subgap conductance, as seen in experiments.

Hunting for Majoranas

Over the past decade, there have been considerable efforts to observe non-abelian quasiparticles in novel quantum materials and devices. These efforts are motivated by the goals of demonstrating quantum statistics of quasiparticles beyond those of fermions and bosons and of establishing the underlying science for the creation of topologically protected quantum bits. In this Review, we focus on efforts to create topological superconducting phases that host Majorana zero modes. We consider the lessons learned from existing experimental efforts, which are motivating both improvements to present platforms and the exploration of new approaches. Although the experimental detection of non-abelian quasiparticles remains challenging, the knowledge gained thus far and the opportunities ahead offer high potential for discovery and advances in this exciting area of quantum physics.

Enhanced superconductivity in spin-orbit proximitized bilayer graphene

In the presence of a large perpendicular electric field, Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) features several broken-symmetry metallic phases^1-3 as well as magnetic-field-induced superconductivity¹. The superconducting state is quite fragile, however, appearing only in a narrow window of density and with a maximum critical temperature T_c≈ 30 mK. Here we show that placing monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe₂) on BLG promotes Cooper pairing to an extraordinary degree: superconductivity appears at zero magnetic field, exhibits an order of magnitude enhancement in T_c and occurs over a density range that is wider by a factor of eight. By mapping quantum oscillations in BLG-WSe₂ as a function of electric field and doping, we establish that superconductivity emerges throughout a region for which the normal state is polarized, with two out of four spin-valley flavours predominantly populated. In-plane magnetic field measurements further reveal that superconductivity in BLG-WSe₂ can exhibit striking dependence of the critical field on doping, with the Chandrasekhar-Clogston (Pauli) limit roughly obeyed on one end of the superconducting dome, yet sharply violated on the other. Moreover, the superconductivity arises only for perpendicular electric fields that push BLG hole wavefunctions towards WSe₂, indicating that proximity-induced (Ising) spin-orbit coupling plays a key role in stabilizing the pairing. Our results pave the way for engineering robust, highly tunable and ultra-clean graphene-based superconductors.
