Indoor-biofilter growth and exposure to airborne chemicals drive similar changes in plant root bacterial communities

Intensive antibiotic treatment of sows with parenteral crystalline ceftiofur and tulathromycin alters the composition of the nasal microbiota of their offspring

The nasal microbiota plays an important role in animal health and the use of antibiotics is a major factor that influences its composition. Here, we studied the consequences of an intensive antibiotic treatment, applied to sows and/or their offspring, on the piglets' nasal microbiota. Four pregnant sows were treated with crystalline ceftiofur and tulathromycin (CTsows) while two other sows received only crystalline ceftiofur (Csows). Sow treatments were performed at D-4 (four days pre-farrowing), D3, D10 and D17 for ceftiofur and D-3, D4 and D11 for tulathromycin. Half of the piglets born to CTsows were treated at D1 with ceftiofur. Nasal swabs were taken from piglets at 22-24 days of age and bacterial load and nasal microbiota composition were defined by 16 s rRNA gene qPCR and amplicon sequencing. Antibiotic treatment of sows reduced their nasal bacterial load, as well as in their offspring, indicating a reduced bacterial transmission from the dams. In addition, nasal microbiota composition of the piglets exhibited signs of dysbiosis, showing unusual taxa. The addition of tulathromycin to the ceftiofur treatment seemed to enhance the deleterious effect on the microbiota diversity by diminishing some bacteria commonly found in the piglets' nasal cavity, such as Glaesserella, Streptococcus, Prevotella, Staphylococcus and several members of the Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae families. On the other hand, the additional treatment of piglets with ceftiofur resulted in no further effect beyond the treatment of the sows. Altogether, these results suggest that intensive antibiotic treatments of sows, especially the double antibiotic treatment, disrupt the nasal microbiota of their offspring and highlight the importance of sow-to-piglet microbiota transmission.

Removal of a complex VOC mixture by potted plants-effects on soil microorganisms

Microorganisms in the soil of potted plants are important for removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from indoor air, but little is known about the subject. The aim of this study was therefore to obtain a better understanding of the effect of VOCs on the microbial community in potted plants. Hedera helix was exposed to gasoline vapors under dynamic chamber conditions for 21 days and three main parameters were investigated. These were (1) removal of the target compounds heptane, 3-methylhexane, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and naphthalene from the gasoline mixture; (2) toluene mineralization; and (3) bacterial abundance and bacterial community structure. H. helix was able to reduce the concentration of the target compounds in the continuously emitted gasoline by 25-32%, except for naphthalene, which was too low in concentration. The soil microcosm of gasoline exposed plants had for an initial 66 h increased toluene mineralization rate compared to the soil microcosm in the soil of plants exposed to clean air. Bacterial abundance was decreased in response to gasoline exposure while bacterial community structure was changed. The change in bacterial community structure was, however, different between the two experiments indicating that several taxonomic units can degrade gasoline components. Especially the genera Rhodanobacter and Pseudonorcardia significantly increased in abundance in response to gasoline vapors. Bauldia, Devosia, and Bradyrhizobium, on the other hand, decreased.

Temporary establishment of bacteria from indoor plant leaves and soil on human skin

BACKGROUND

Plants are found in a large percentage of indoor environments, yet the potential for bacteria associated with indoor plant leaves and soil to colonize human skin remains unclear. We report results of experiments in a controlled climate chamber to characterize bacterial communities inhabiting the substrates and leaves of five indoor plant species, and quantify microbial transfer dynamics and residence times on human skin following simulated touch contact events. Controlled bacterial propagule transfer events with soil and leaf donors were applied to the arms of human occupants and repeatedly measured over a 24-h period using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.

RESULTS

Substrate samples had greater biomass and alpha diversity compared to leaves and baseline skin bacterial communities, as well as dissimilar taxonomic compositions. Despite these differences in donor community diversity and biomass, we observed repeatable patterns in the dynamics of transfer events. Recipient human skin bacterial communities increased in alpha diversity and became more similar to donor communities, an effect which, for soil contact only, persisted for at least 24 h. Washing with soap and water effectively returned communities to their pre-perturbed state, although some abundant soil taxa resisted removal through washing.

CONCLUSIONS

This study represents an initial characterization of bacterial relationships between humans and indoor plants, which represent a potentially valuable element of biodiversity in the built environment. Although environmental microbiota are unlikely to permanently colonize skin following a single contact event, repeated or continuous exposures to indoor biodiversity may be increasingly relevant for the functioning and diversity of the human microbiome as urbanization continues.

Microplastic additions alter soil organic matter stability and bacterial community under varying temperature in two contrasting soils

Microplastics can accumulate in soils and strongly affect the biogeochemical cycle. Biodegradable plastic films show potential as sustainable alternatives that could reduce microplastic soil contamination and accumulation. However, the effects of traditional and biodegradable microplastics on soil organic matter (SOM) stability are not sufficiently understood, particularly under varying temperatures. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) microplastics on SOM stability and bacterial community in two contrasting soils (Black soil vs. Loess soil) under varying temperature conditions (15 °C vs. 25 °C). Results showed that microplastics addition significantly enhanced cumulative CO₂ emissions and DOC contents, particularly 1 % PLA treatment accelerated CO₂ emissions by 19 % - 74 %, DOC content by 3 % - 23 % at 25 °C. A higher temperature sensitivity (Q₁₀) at the PLA treatment indicated that PLA is more susceptible to elevated temperature compared to PE. The presence of both PE and PLA microplastics significantly changed the DOC spectral characteristics, i.e., high temperature increased the value of the specific UV absorbance (SUVA) in soil without microplastics, while decreased it in soil with microplastics. In comparison to soil without microplastics, soil exposed to 1 % microplastics had lower MBC concentrations and greater metabolic quotient. 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that the presence of PLA microplastic significantly alters soil bacterial community. PE and CK had similar Bray-Curtis distances between two temperatures, while PLA increased the dissimilarity between CK compared to PE. Compared to the two soils, loess soil is more sensitive to microplastics addition. Microplastics have a non-ignorable effect on soil organic matter stability, the interaction between microplastics and soil environment should be considered.

Phytoremediation: The Sustainable Strategy for Improving Indoor and Outdoor Air Quality

Most of the world’s population is exposed to highly polluted air conditions exceeding the WHO limits, causing various human diseases that lead towards increased morbidity as well as mortality. Expenditures on air purification and costs spent on the related health issues are rapidly increasing. To overcome this burden, plants are potential candidates to remove pollutants through diverse biological mechanisms involving accumulation, immobilization, volatilization, and degradation. This eco-friendly, cost-effective, and non-invasive method is considered as a complementary or alternative tool compared to engineering-based remediation techniques. Various plant species remove indoor and outdoor air pollutants, depending on their morphology, growth condition, and microbial communities. Hence, appropriate plant selection with optimized growth conditions can enhance the remediation capacity significantly. Furthermore, suitable supplementary treatments, or finding the best combination junction with other methods, can optimize the phytoremediation process.

Building upon current knowledge and techniques of indoor microbiology to construct the next era of theory into microorganisms, health, and the built environment

In the constructed habitat in which we spend up to 90% of our time, architectural design influences occupants' behavioral patterns, interactions with objects, surfaces, rituals, the outside environment, and each other. Within this built environment, human behavior and building design contribute to the accrual and dispersal of microorganisms; it is a collection of fomites that transfer microorganisms; reservoirs that collect biomass; structures that induce human or air movement patterns; and space types that encourage proximity or isolation between humans whose personal microbial clouds disperse cells into buildings. There have been recent calls to incorporate building microbiology into occupant health and exposure research and standards, yet the built environment is largely viewed as a repository for microorganisms which are to be eliminated, instead of a habitat which is inexorably linked to the microbial influences of building inhabitants. Health sectors have re-evaluated the role of microorganisms in health, incorporating microorganisms into prevention and treatment protocols, yet no paradigm shift has occurred with respect to microbiology of the built environment, despite calls to do so. Technological and logistical constraints often preclude our ability to link health outcomes to indoor microbiology, yet sufficient study exists to inform the theory and implementation of the next era of research and intervention in the built environment. This review presents built environment characteristics in relation to human health and disease, explores some of the current experimental strategies and interventions which explore health in the built environment, and discusses an emerging model for fostering indoor microbiology rather than fearing it.

Potted plants do not improve indoor air quality: a review and analysis of reported VOC removal efficiencies

Potted plants have demonstrated abilities to remove airborne volatile organic compounds (VOC) in small, sealed chambers over timescales of many hours or days. Claims have subsequently been made suggesting that potted plants may reduce indoor VOC concentrations. These potted plant chamber studies reported outcomes using various metrics, often not directly applicable to contextualizing plants' impacts on indoor VOC loads. To assess potential impacts, 12 published studies of chamber experiments were reviewed, and 196 experimental results were translated into clean air delivery rates (CADR, m³/h), which is an air cleaner metric that can be normalized by volume to parameterize first-order loss indoors. The distribution of single-plant CADR spanned orders of magnitude, with a median of 0.023 m³/h, necessitating the placement of 10-1000 plants/m² of a building's floor space for the combined VOC-removing ability by potted plants to achieve the same removal rate that outdoor-to-indoor air exchange already provides in typical buildings (~1 h^-1). Future experiments should shift the focus from potted plants' (in)abilities to passively clean indoor air, and instead investigate VOC uptake mechanisms, alternative biofiltration technologies, biophilic productivity and well-being benefits, or negative impacts of other plant-sourced emissions, which must be assessed by rigorous field work accounting for important indoor processes.

Green environments and cardiovascular health

Several large epidemiological studies have found robust associations between greenness and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). These studies report that close residential proximity to greenness is associated with a decrease in cardiovascular mortality as well as major adverse cardiovascular events. Although mechanisms underlying this link are not well understood, the beneficial health effects of greenness have been linked to its ability to relieve stress, decrease air pollution, and encourage physical activity. Greenness in residential neighborhoods could also increase access to healthy goods and services, as well as social interactions. Research into the health effects of greenness could provide new insights into the environmental determinants of CVD risk and could inform the development of actionable greenness-based strategies to prevent CVD and its clinical manifestations.

Biofiltration of airborne VOCs with green wall systems-Microbial and chemical dynamics

Botanical air filtration is a promising technology for reducing indoor air contaminants, but the underlying mechanisms need better understanding. Here, we made a set of chamber fumigation experiments of up to 16 weeks of duration, to study the filtration efficiencies for seven volatile organic compounds (VOCs; decane, toluene, 2-ethylhexanol, α-pinene, octane, benzene, and xylene) and to monitor microbial dynamics in simulated green wall systems. Biofiltration functioned on sub-ppm VOC levels without concentration-dependence. Airflow through the growth medium was needed for efficient removal of chemically diverse VOCs, and the use of optimized commercial growth medium further improved the efficiency compared with soil and Leca granules. Experimental green wall simulations using these components were immediately effective, indicating that initial VOC removal was largely abiotic. Golden pothos plants had a small additional positive impact on VOC filtration and bacterial diversity in the green wall system. Proteobacteria dominated the microbiota of rhizosphere and irrigation water. Airborne VOCs shaped the microbial communities, enriching potential VOC-utilizing bacteria (especially Nevskiaceae and Patulibacteraceae) in the irrigation water, where much of the VOC degradation capacity of the biofiltration systems resided. These results clearly show the benefits of active air circulation and optimized growth media in modern green wall systems.
