Draft Genome Sequence of Rhodococcus erythropolis VSD3, a Diesel Fuel-Degrading and Plant Growth-Promoting Bacterium Isolated from Hedera helix Leaves

Hyunsoonleella sp. HU1-3 Increased the Biomass of Ulva fasciata

Green algae are photosynthetic organisms and play an important role in coastal environment. The microbial community on the surface of green algae has an effect on the health and nutrition of the host. However, few species of epiphytic microbiota have been reported to play a role in promoting the growth of algae. In this study, 16S rDNA sequencing was used to study the changes of microbial composition on the surface of Ulva fasciata at different growth stages. Some growth promoting bacteria were identified. The possible growth-promoting behavior of the strains were verified by co-culture of pure bacteria obtained from the surface of U. fasciata with its sterile host. Among the identified species, a new bacterial species, Hyunsoonleella sp. HU1-3 (belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae) significantly promoted the growth of U. fasciata. The results also showed that there were many genes involved in the synthesis of growth hormone and cytokinin in the genome of Hyunsoonleella sp. HU1-3. This study identified the bacterium Hyunsoonleella sp. HU1-3 for the first time, in which this bacterium has strong growth-promoting effects on U. fasciata. Our findings not only provide insights on the establishment of the surface microbiota of U. fasciata, but also indicate that Hyunsoonleella sp. HU1-3 is one of the important species to promote the growth of U. fasciata.

Ambient Air Pollution Shapes Bacterial and Fungal Ivy Leaf Communities

Ambient air pollution exerts deleterious effects on our environment. Continuously exposed to the atmosphere, diverse communities of microorganisms thrive on leaf surfaces, the phylloplane. The composition of these communities is dynamic, responding to many environmental factors including ambient air pollution. In this field study, over a 2 year period, we sampled Hedera helix (ivy) leaves at six locations exposed to different ambient air pollution conditions. Daily, we monitored ambient black carbon (BC), PM_2.5, PM₁₀, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone concentrations and found that ambient air pollution led to a 2–7-fold BC increase on leaves, the phylloplane BC load. Our results further indicated that the phylloplane BC load correlates with the diversity of bacterial and fungal leaf communities, impacting diversity more than seasonal effects. The bacterial genera Novosphingobium, Hymenobacter, and Methylorubrum, and the fungal genus Ampelomyces were indicators for communities exposed to the highest phylloplane BC load. Parallel to this, we present one fungal and two bacterial phylloplane strains isolated from an air-polluted environment able to degrade benzene, toluene, and/or xylene, including a genomics-based description of the degradation pathways involved. The findings of this study suggest that ambient air pollution shapes microbial leaf communities, by affecting diversity and supporting members able to degrade airborne pollutants.

Influence of Urbanization on Epiphytic Bacterial Communities of the Platanus × hispanica Tree Leaves in a Biennial Study

The aerial surfaces of plants harbor diverse communities of microorganisms. The rising awareness concerning the potential roles of these phyllosphere microbiota for airborne pollutant remediation and plant growth promotion, advocates for a better understanding of their community structure and dynamics in urban ecosystems. Here, we characterized the epiphytic microbial communities on leaves of Platanus × hispanica trees in the city centre of Hasselt (Belgium), and the nearby forest area of Bokrijk, Genk (Belgium). We compared the influences of season, site, and air pollutants concentration variations on the tree's phyllosphere microbiome by determining the intra- and inter-individual variation in leaf bacterial communities. High-throughput amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene revealed large variation in the bacterial community structure and diversity throughout the years but also allowed to discriminate an environment effect on community assembly. Partial drivers for this environment effect on composition can be correlated with the huge differences in ultrafine particulate matter (UFP) and black carbon on the leaves. A change in bacterial community composition was noted for trees growing in the city center compared to the natural site, and also more human-associated genera were found colonizing the leaves from the city center. These integrated results offer an original and first insight in the Platanus phyllomicrobiota, which can offer new opportunities to use phyllosphere microorganisms to enhance air pollution degradation.

Engineering root microbiomes for healthier crops and soils using beneficial, environmentally safe bacteria

The Green Revolution developed new crop varieties, which greatly improved food security worldwide. However, the growth of these plants relied heavily on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which have led to an overuse of synthetic fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides with serious environmental consequences and negative effects on human health. Environmentally friendly plant-growth-promoting methods to replace our current reliance on synthetic chemicals and to develop more sustainable agricultural practices to offset the damage caused by many agrochemicals are proposed herein. The increased use of bioinoculants, which consist of microorganisms that establish synergies with target crops and influence production and yield by enhancing plant growth, controlling disease, and providing critical mineral nutrients, is a potential solution. The microorganisms found in bioinoculants are often bacteria or fungi that reside within either external or internal plant microbiomes. However, before they can be used routinely in agriculture, these microbes must be confirmed as nonpathogenic strains that promote plant growth and survival. In this article, besides describing approaches for discovering plant-growth-promoting bacteria in various environments, including phytomicrobiomes and soils, we also discuss methods to evaluate their safety for the environment and for human health.
