Abstract
Glyphosate (GP, N-phosphonomethyl glycine) is one of the most popular organophosphate herbicides widely used in agricultural practices worldwide. There have been extensive reports on the biohazard attributes and hormetic impacts of GP on plant and animal systems. However, the effects of GP on plant growth-promoting microbes and its ecological relevance remain unknown. Here, we show that GP does exert a hormetic impact on Burkholderia cepacia LS-044, a rice (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica cv. Tainung 71) root endophytic isolate. We used increasing doses of ferulic acid (FA, 1-25 mM) and GP (0.5-5 mM) to test the growth and antifungal volatile production in LS-044 by electrochemical, liquid chromatographic, gas chromatographic and spectrophotometric means. GP treatment at a low dose (0.5 mM) increased FA utilization and significantly (P < 0.0001) enhanced antifungal volatile activity in LS-044. Although FA (1 mM) was rapidly utilized by LS-044, no chromatographically detectable utilization of GP was observed at tested doses (0.5-5 mM). LS-044 emitted predominant amounts of tropone in addition to moderate-to-minor amounts of diverse ketones and/or their derivatives (acetone, acetophenone, 2-butanone, 1-propanone, 1-(2-furanyl-ethanone, 1-phenyl-1-propanone and 1-(3-pyridinyl)-1-propanone), d-menthol, 2-methoxy-3-(1-methylethyl)-pyrazine, dimethyl disulfide, pyridine and ammonium carbamate when grown under GP supplement. GP hormesis on LS-044 induced phenotypic variations in O. sativa ssp. japonica cv. Tainan 11 as evident through seed germination assay. Genes involved in the transformation of FA, and a key gene encoding 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) with Gly-94 and Tyr-95 residues localized at active site most likely rendering EPSPS sensitivity to GP, were detected in LS-044. This is the first report on the GP hormesis influencing morphological and metabolic aspects including volatile emission in a biocontrol bacterium that could modulate rice plant phenotype.

Abstract
Due to their distinctive flavors, edible mushrooms have gained attention in flavor-related research, and the quality of their flavors determines their consumption. The odor is a vital element of food flavor that significantly impacts consumers' perceptions and purchase decisions. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the odorant ingredient is the primary factors affecting scent characteristics. VOCs analysis and identification require technical assistance. The production and use of edible mushrooms can be aided by a broader examination of their volatile constituents. This review discusses the composition of VOCs in edible mushrooms and how they affect flavors. The principles, advantages, and disadvantages of various methods for extraction, isolation, and characterization of the VOCs of edible mushrooms are also highlighted. The numerous VOCs found in edible mushrooms such as primarily C-8 compounds, organic sulfur compounds, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, and esters are summarized along with their effects on the various characteristics of scent. Combining multiple extraction, isolation, identification, and quantification technologies will facilitate rapid and accurate analysis of VOCs in edible mushrooms as proof of sensory attributes and quality.

Abstract
Melioidosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by the Gram-negative bacillus, Burkholderia pseudomallei following contact with a contaminated environmental source, normally soil or water in tropical and subtropical locations. The disease spectrum varies from rapidly progressive bacteraemic infection with or without pneumonia, to focal lesions in deep soft tissues and internal organs to superficial soft tissue infection and asymptomatic seroconversion with possible long-term dormancy. Most infections occur with a background of chronic illness such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease and alcoholic liver disease. Improvements in diagnosis, targeted antimicrobial treatment and long term follow up have improved clinical outcomes. Environmental controls following rare point source case clusters and heightened awareness of melioidosis appear to have reduced the disease burden in some parts of northern Australia. However, the impact of climate change on dispersal of environmental B. pseudomallei, and changing land use in tropical Australia is expected to change the epidemiology of melioidosis in future.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play important roles in the regulation of plant growth and pathogen resistance. However, little is known about the influence of VOCs released from endophytic strains (Burkholderia pyrrocinia strain JK-SH007) on controlling pathogens or inducing systemic resistance in poplar. In this study, we found that VOCs produced by strain JK-SH007 inhibit three poplar canker pathogens (Cytospora chrysosperma, Phomopsis macrospora, and Fusicoccum aesculi) and promote defense enzyme activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) and total phenol (TP) accumulation. Thirteen kinds of VOC components were identified using the solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method. Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) accounted for the largest proportion of these VOCs. Treatments of poplar seedlings with different volumes of VOC standards (DMDS, benzothiazole, dimethylthiomethane, and phenylacetone) showed that DMDS had the greatest effects on various defense enzyme activities and MDA and TP accumulation. We also found that the inhibitory effect of the VOCs on the three pathogens was gradually enhanced with increasing standard volume. Moreover, the treatment of samples with DMDS significantly reduced the severity and development of the disease caused by three poplar canker pathogens. Comparative transcriptomics analysis of poplar seedlings treated with DMDS showed that there were 1,586 differentially expressed genes in the leaves and stems, and quantitative PCR showed that the gene expression trends were highly consistent with the transcriptome sequencing results. The most significant transcriptomic changes induced by VOCs were related to hormone signal transduction, transcriptional regulation of plant-pathogen interactions, and energy metabolism. Moreover, 137 transcription factors, including members of the ethylene response factor, NAC, WRKY, G2-like, and basic helix-loop-helix protein families, were identified to be involved in the VOC-induced process. This study elucidates the resistance induced by Burkholderia pyrrocinia strain JK-SH007 to poplar canker at the molecular level and can make possible a new method for the comprehensive prevention and control of poplar disease.

Abstract
Although a fundamental understanding of the pathogenicity of most biothreat agents has been elucidated and available treatments have increased substantially over the past decades, they still represent a significant public health threat in this age of (bio)terrorism, indiscriminate warfare, pollution, climate change, unchecked population growth, and globalization. The key step to almost all prevention, protection, prophylaxis, post-exposure treatment, and mitigation of any bioagent is early detection. Here, we review available methods for detecting bioagents including pathogenic bacteria and viruses along with their toxins. An introduction placing this subject in the historical context of previous naturally occurring outbreaks and efforts to weaponize selected agents is first provided along with definitions and relevant considerations. An overview of the detection technologies that find use in this endeavor along with how they provide data or transduce signal within a sensing configuration follows. Current "gold" standards for biothreat detection/diagnostics along with a listing of relevant FDA approved in vitro diagnostic devices is then discussed to provide an overview of the current state of the art. Given the 2014 outbreak of Ebola virus in Western Africa and the recent 2016 spread of Zika virus in the Americas, discussion of what constitutes a public health emergency and how new in vitro diagnostic devices are authorized for emergency use in the U.S. are also included. The majority of the Review is then subdivided around the sensing of bacterial, viral, and toxin biothreats with each including an overview of the major agents in that class, a detailed cross-section of different sensing methods in development based on assay format or analytical technique, and some discussion of related microfluidic lab-on-a-chip/point-of-care devices. Finally, an outlook is given on how this field will develop from the perspective of the biosensing technology itself and the new emerging threats they may face.

Abstract
Hybrid optical gas sensors, based on different organic and inorganic materials, are proposed in this paper, with the aim of using them as optical artificial nose systems. Three types of organic and inorganic dyes, namely zinc-porphyrin, manganese-porphyrin, and zinc-phthalocyanine, were used as gas sensing materials to fabricate a thin-film coating on glass substrates. The performance of the gas sensor was enhanced by a thermal treatment process. The optical absorption spectra and morphological structure of the sensing films were confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and atomic force microscope, respectively. The optical gas sensors were tested with various volatile compounds, such as acetic acid, acetone, ammonia, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and formaldehyde, which are commonly found to be released during the growth of bacteria. These sensors were used to detect and discriminate between the bacterial odors of three pathogenic species (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) grown in Luria-Bertani medium. Based on a pattern recognition (PARC) technique, we showed that the proposed hybrid optical gas sensors can discriminate among the three pathogenic bacterial odors and that the volatile organic compound (VOC) odor pattern of each bacterium was dependent on the phase of bacterial growth.
