Abstract
The world, a famished planet with an overgrowing population, requires enormous food crops. This scenario compelled the farmers to use a high quantity of synthetic fertilizers for high food crop productivity. However, prolonged usage of chemical fertilizers results in severe adverse effects on soil and water quality. On the other hand, the growing population significantly consumes large quantities of poultry meats. Eventually, this produces a mammoth amount of poultry waste, chicken feathers. Owing to the protein value of the chicken feathers, these wastes are converted into protein hydrolysate and further extend their application as biostimulants for sustained agriculture. The protein profile of chicken feather protein hydrolysate (CFPH) produced through Bacillus spp. was the maximum compared to physical and chemical protein extraction methods. Several studies proved that the application of CFPH and active Bacillus spp. culture to soil and plants results in enhanced plant growth, phytochemical constituents, crop yield, soil nutrients, fertility, microbiome and resistance against diverse abiotic and biotic stresses. Overall, "CFPH - Jack of all trades" and "Bacillus spp. - an active camouflage to the surroundings where they applied showed profound and significant benefits to the plant growth under the most adverse conditions. In addition, Bacillus spp. coheres the biofortification process in plants through the breakdown of metals into metal ions that eventually increase the nutrient value of the food crops. However, detailed information on them is missing. This can be overcome by further real-world studies on rhizoengineering through a multi-omics approach and their interaction with plants. This review has explored the best possible and efficient strategy for managing chicken feather wastes into protein-rich CFPH through Bacillus spp. bioconversion and utilizing the CFPH and Bacillus spp. as biostimulants, biofertilizers, biopesticides and biofortificants. This paper is an excellent report on organic waste management, circular economy and sustainable agriculture research frontier.

Abstract
Amphipathic compounds known as biosurfactants are able to reduce surface and interfacial tensions. These substances produced by microbial organisms perform the same functions as chemical surfactants with several enhancements, the most significant of which is biocontrol activity. Lipopeptide is one of the five biosurfactants from natural resources and is identified as the best alternative for chemical surfactants and the major topic of interest for both scientific and industrial communities due to their increasingly growing potential applications in biological and commercial fields. These are the biological compounds with very less toxicity level that increase their importance in the pesticide industry. In this article we summarize the structural diversity of the microbial lipopeptide biosurfactants and focus on their applications as biocontrol agents in plants, covering (1) an intensive study of the structural diversity of lipopeptide biosurfactants originated primarily by the Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Cyanobacteria, and Actinomycetes species is presented, (2) the comparative study of advantages and disadvantages of characterization techniques and physicochemical properties which have a major role in biocontrol activity of microbial lipopeptides, and (3) their wide range biocontrol applications as systemic resistance inducers against different plant diseases, resistance against phytopathogens by alteration of wettability of plant surfaces and antimicrobial activities of important bioactive lipopeptides produced from Bacillus strains.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis species complex is known as lipopeptide-producer with biotechnological potential for pharmaceutical developments. This study aimed to identify lipopeptides from a bacterial isolate and evaluate their antifungal effects. Here, we isolated and identified a lipopeptide-producing bacterium as a species of Bacillus subtilis complex (strain UL-1). Twenty lipopeptides (six iturins, six fengycins, and eight surfactins) were identified in the crude extract (CE) and fractions (F1, F2, F3, and F4), and the highest content of total lipopeptides was observed in CE and F2. The chemical quantification data corroborate with the hemolytic and antifungal activities that CE and F2 were the most hemolytic and inhibited the fungal growth at lower concentrations against Fusarium spp. In addition, they caused morphological changes such as shortening and/or atypical branching of hyphae and induction of chlamydospore-like structure formation, especially in Fusarium solani. CE was the most effective in inhibiting the biofilm formation and in disrupting the mature biofilm of F. solani reducing the total biomass and the metabolic activity at concentrations ≥ 2 µg/mL. Moreover, CE significantly inhibited the adherence of F. solani conidia on contact lenses and nails as well as disrupted the pre-formed biofilms on nails. CE at 100 mg/kg was nontoxic on Galleria mellonella larvae, and it reduced the fungal burden in larvae previously infected by F. solani. Taken together, the lipopeptides obtained from strain UL-1 demonstrated a potent anti-Fusarium effect inducing morphological alterations and antibiofilm activities. Our data open further studies for the biotechnological application of these lipopeptides as potential antifungal agents. Abstract
The antagonistic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HY2-1 was a marine microbiology that was isolated previously from the seabed silt of Beibu Gulf in China by dual culture with Penicillium digitatum. As a continuous study, the present work focused on evaluating the antimicrobial activity, identifying the produced active components, and revealing the fermentation characteristics of B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1, respectively. It was found that B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1 exhibited a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against the tested seven phytopathogenic fungi and five pathogenic bacteria by producing Bacillus lipopeptides such as fengycin A (C14 to C19 homologues) and surfactin (C14 and C15 homologues). Morphological observation of P. digitatum under light microscope, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscope inferred that B. amyloliquefaciens exerted the antagonistic activity by damaging the fungal cell membrane, thus inhibiting the mycelium growth and sporification of phytopathogenic fungi. As a marine microbiology, our results showed that B. amyloliquefaciens could survive and metabolize even at the culture condition with 110 g/L of NaCl concentration, and the produced antimicrobial compounds exhibited excellent thermostability and acid-alkali tolerance. The dynamic models were further constructed to theoretically analyze the fermentation process of B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1, suggesting that the synthesis of antimicrobial compounds was coupled with both cell growth and cell biomass. In conclusion, the marine lipopeptides-producing B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1 showed a promising prospect to be explored as a biocontrol agent for plant disease control of crops and postharvest preservation of fruits and vegetables, especially due to its outstanding stress resistance and the broad-spectrum and effective antagonist on various phytopathogenic fungi.

Exploring the Role of Salicylic Acid in Regulating the Colonization Ability of Bacillus subtilis 26D in Potato Plants and Defense against Phytophthora infestans. Abstract
Plant colonization by endophytic bacteria is mediated by different biomolecules that cause dynamic changes in gene expression of both bacteria and plant. Phytohormones, in particular, salicylic acid, play a key role in the regulation of endophytic colonization and diversity of bacteria in methaphytobiome. For the first time it was found that salicylic acid influenced motility in biofilms and transcription of the surfactin synthetase gene of the endophytic strain Bacillus subtilis 26D in vitro. Treatment of Solanum tuberosum plants with salicylic acid, along with B. subtilis 26D, increased the number of endophytic cells of bacteria in potato internal tissues and level of transcripts of bacterial surfactin synthetase gene and decreased transcription of plant PR genes on the stage of colonisation with endophytes. Thus, the production of surfactin plays an important role in endophytic colonization of plants, and salicylic acid has an ability to influence this mechanism. Here we firstly show that plants treated with salicylic acid and B. subtilis 26D showed enhanced resistance to the late blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans, which was accompanied by increase in transcriptional activity of plant PR-genes and bacterial surfactin synthetase gene after pathogen inoculation. Therefore, it is suggested that salicylic acid can modulate physiological status of the whole plant–endophyte system and improve biocontrol potential of endophytic strains.

Abstract
The use of biocontrol agents based on endophytic bacteria against phloem-feeding insects is limited by a lack of knowledge and understanding of the mechanism of action of the endophyte community that makes up the plant microbiome. In this work, the mechanisms of the additive action of endophytic strains B. subtilis 26D and B. subtilis 11VM on the resistance of bread spring wheat against greenbug aphid Schizaphis graminum, was studied. It was shown that B. subtilis 26D secreted lipopeptide surfactin and phytohormones cytokinins, and B. subtilis 11VM produced iturin and auxins into the cultivation medium. Both strains and their lipopeptide-rich fractions showed direct aphicidal activity against greenbug aphid. For the first time, it was shown that B. subtilis 26D and B. subtilis 11VM in the same manner, as well as their lipopeptide-rich fractions, activated the expression of salicylate- and ethylene-dependent PR genes, and influenced plant redox metabolism, which led to an increase in plant endurance against aphids. The composition of endophytic strains B. subtilis 26D + B. subtilis 11VM had an additive effect on plant resistance to aphids due to an increase in the number of endophytic bacterial cells, and, as well as due to the synergistic effect of their mixture of lipopeptides - surfactin + iturin, both on the aphid mortality and on the expression of PR1 and PR3 genes. All these factors can be the reason for the observed increase in the growth of plants affected by aphids under the influence of B. subtilis 26D and B. subtilis 11VM, individually and in composition. The study demonstrates the possibility of creating in the future an artificial composition to enhance plant microbiome with endophytic bacteria, which combines growth-promoting and plant immunity stimulating properties against phloem-feeding insects. This direction is one of the most promising approaches to green pesticide discovery in the future.

Abstract
Aconitum carmichaelii Debx. is a famous medicinal plant rich in alkaloids and widely used to treat various human diseases in Asian countries. However, southern blight caused by Sclerotium rolfsii severely hampered the yield of A. carmichaelii. Beneficial microbe-based biological control is becoming a promising alternative and an environmentally friendly approach for the management of plant diseases. In this study, we evaluated the biocontrol potential of an endophytic bacterial strain JY-7-2L, which was isolated from the leaves of A. carmichaelii, against southern blight in vitro and by a series of field experiments. JY-7-2L was identified as Bacillus subtilis based on multi-locus sequence analysis. JY-7-2L showed strong antagonistic activity against S. rolfsii in vitro and on A. carmichaelii root slices by dual-culture assay. Cell-free culture filtrate of JY-7-2L significantly inhibited the hyphal growth, sclerotia formation, and germination of S. rolfsii. In addition, volatile compounds produced by JY-7-2L completely and directly inhibited the growth of S. rolfsii. Furthermore, JY-7-2L was proved to produce hydrolytic enzymes including glucanase, cellulase, protease, indole acetic acid, and siderophore. The presence of bacA, fenA, fenB, fenD, srfAA, and baeA genes by PCR amplification indicated that JY-7-2L was able to produce antifungal lipopeptides and polyketides. Field trials indicated that application of the JY-7-2L fermentation culture significantly reduced southern blight disease severity by up to 30% with a long-acting duration of up to 62 days. Meanwhile, JY-7-2L significantly promoted the fresh and dry weights of the stem, main root, and lateral roots of A. carmichaelii compared to non-inoculation and/or commercial B. subtilis product treatments. Taken together, JY-7-2L can be used as a promising biocontrol agent for the control of southern blight in A. carmichaelii.

Abstract
Aim. To study the structure of bacteria exometabolites of the Bacillus velezensis BZR336g strain using the GC×GC‐MS method when cultivated on nutrient media differing in the content of microelements.Material and Methods. The object of the study is the B. velezensis BZR336g bacterium strain. It shows promise for the development of a biopreparation on its basis for protecting plants against phytopathogenic fungi. Exometabolites were isolated from the liquid culture and their metabolomic profile was analysed with the GC×GC‐MS method using a LECO Pegasus BT‐4D device.Results. Among the identified compounds one can see the precursors of biologically active metabolites of bacteria of the strain B. velezensis BZR336g. Analysis of the total accumulation of fatty acids and their analogs, as well as of amino acids and peptides, by B. velezensis BZR336g bacteria on nutrient media differing in the content of metal ions, shows that Co2+ ions in combination with Mn2+ and Zn2+ ions play an important role in inducing their synthesis. The presence of the Co2+ ion in the nutrient medium has the greatest influence on the synthesis of peptide components. If it is removed from the nutrient medium, the amount of amino acids and peptides decreases by almost two times. Benzene compounds can act as precursors of aromatic hydrocarbons, which are also of interest in the analysis of bacterial metabolism, since they have antimicrobial activity.Conclusions. The number of compounds that are precursors of lipopeptide metabolites depends on the content of metal ions in the nutrient medium. This fact may vary depending on the combination in which the metals are present.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lipopeptides extracted from the Bacillus genus are emerging biopesticides, especially in protecting crops against phytopathogens. Among the three main families of lipopeptides, surfactins have been identified as having insecticidal properties against several insect orders. However, the sublethal effects of these promising biopesticides on insect pests and their natural enemies remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of surfactins topically applied on black bean aphid Aphis fabae mortality. First, the effects of surfactins on aphid mortality were determined by delivering increasing concentrations to adults and nymphs. Second, the sublethal effects of surfactins on locomotor activity and feeding behavior of surviving aphids were evaluated using the electropenetrography method. Finally, the effect of host exposure to surfactins on host selection behavior by Aphidius matricariae parasitoid females was analyzed. RESULTS Four surfactins concentrations were studied (0.5, 1, 2.5 and 5 g L-1 ). There was concentration-dependent mortality in response to surfactins at 24 h after treatment. Surfactins impacted aphid behavior when delivered at 1 g L-1 by inducing a greater locomotor activity and a reduction in feeding activity. By contrast, at the third trophic level, exposure of aphid hosts to surfactins did not affect behaviors leading to host recognition and acceptance by parasitoid females. CONCLUSION This study highlighted the consequences of aphid exposure to surfactins in the context of bottom-up regulation. Although surfactins could directly impact aphid behavior, they had no apparent consequences on the host selection behavior exhibited by parasitoid wasps.

Abstract
Within the framework of biocontrol development, several natural lipopeptides produced by Bacillus subtilis show well-documented anti-microbial properties, especially in orchards. However, the number of studies on their putative insecticidal effects remain low despite the growing interest to develop new strategies of orchards pests' control. The rosy apple aphid Dysaphis plantaginea is the major aphid pest causing great leaf damage to apple trees. In this study, we submitted young adult aphids to topical application of three different families of lipopeptides, Plipastatin (Fengycin), Mycosubtilin (Iturin), and Surfactin, either separately or as a ternary mixture. Their aphicidal effects were investigated at 1, 2.5 and 5 g/L, both at 1 h and 24 h after exposure, and their effects on aphid behavior were studied at the 2.5 g/L concentration at 24 h after exposure. When delivered alone, lipopeptides displayed contrasted effects varying from no aphicidal activity for Mycosubtilin to a mortality induced even at low concentrations by Surfactin. Surprisingly, locomotor activity of the surviving aphids was only affected by the two least lethal treatments, Mycosubtilin and the ternary mix. Their feeding behavior was only impacted by Surfactin, the most lethal treatment, that unexpectedly increased phloem sap ingestion. The results are discussed in the context of lipopeptides applicability for integrated pest management.

Abstract
Some members of root-associated Bacillus species have been developed as biocontrol agents due to their contribution to plant protection by directly interfering with the growth of pathogens or by stimulating systemic resistance in their host. As rhizosphere-dwelling bacteria, these bacilli are surrounded and constantly interacting with other microbes via different types of communications. With this review, we provide an updated vision of the molecular and phenotypic responses of Bacillus upon sensing other rhizosphere microorganisms and/or their metabolites. We illustrate how Bacillus spp. may react by modulating the production of secondary metabolites, such as cyclic lipopeptides or polyketides. On the other hand, some developmental processes, such as biofilm formation, motility, and sporulation may also be modified upon interaction, reflecting the adaptation of Bacillus multicellular communities to microbial competitors for preserving their ecological persistence. This review also points out the limited data available and a global lack of knowledge indicating that more research is needed in order to, not only better understand the ecology of bacilli in their natural soil niche, but also to better assess and improve their promising biocontrol potential.
