Understanding the Complexation Behavior of Carbamoylphosphine Oxide Ligands with Representative f-Block Elements

The complexation behavior of carbamoylmethylphosphine oxide ligands (CMPO), a bifunctional phosphine oxide, and their substituted derivatives with Ce(III), Eu(III), Th(IV), U(VI), and Am(III) was probed at the density functional theory (DFT) level. The enhanced extraction of trivalent rare earth elements by the 2-diphenylphosphinylethyl derivative over the conventional CMPO ligand is identified due to the availability of an additional P═O donor group in the former. In addition, the orbital and dispersive interactions play a vital role in the preference of Th(IV) over U(VI) during extraction using CMPO ligands. The better complexing ability of ligands having long alkyl chain substituents at the P atom is justified due to the observed enhanced dispersion interactions in these systems.

Accurate Evaluation of Dispersion Energies at Coupled Cluster Level to Understand the Substituent Effects in Am(III) and Eu(III) Complexes

The effect of cyclic and aromatic substituents on the complexation behavior of phosphine oxide ligands with Am(III) and Eu(III) was investigated at density functional theory (DFT) and domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled-cluster (DLPNO-CC) levels. Combining DFT with accurate coupled cluster methods, we have evaluated the dispersion energy contributions to the complexation energies for trivalent Am and Eu complexes for the first time. Irrespective of the nature of substituents on the P atom, the electronic structure of the P═O group remains identical in all of the ligands. The study reveals the importance of dispersion interactions during complexation and is estimated to be more significant for Am(III) than for Eu(III) complexes.

Phosphineoxide-Chelated Europium(III) Nanoparticles for Ceftriaxone Detection

The present work demonstrates the optimization of the ligand structure in the series of bis(phosphine oxide) and β-ketophosphine oxide representatives for efficient coordination of Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions with the formation of the complexes exhibiting high Tb³⁺- and Eu³⁺-centered luminescence. The analysis of the stoichiometry and structure of the lanthanide complexes obtained using the XRD method reveals the great impact of the bridging group nature between two phosphine oxide moieties on the coordination mode of the ligands with Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions. The bridging imido-group facilitates the deprotonation of the imido- bis(phosphine oxide) ligand followed by the formation of tris-complexes. The spectral and PXRD analysis of the separated colloids indicates that the high stability of the tris-complexes provides their safe conversion into polystyrenesulfonate-stabilized colloids using the solvent exchange method. The red Eu³⁺-centered luminescence of the tris-complex exhibits the same specificity in the solutions and the colloids. The pronounced luminescent response on the antibiotic ceftriaxone allows for sensing the latter in aqueous solutions with an LOD value equal to 0.974 μM.

Conformational Analysis of N-Alkyl-N-[2-(diphenylphosphoryl)ethyl]amides of Diphenylphosphorylacetic Acid: Dipole Moments, IR Spectroscopy, DFT Study

Experimental and theoretical conformational analysis of N-methyl-N-[2-(diphenylphosphoryl)ethyl]diphenylphosphorylacetamide, N-butyl-N-[2-(diphenylphosphoryl)ethyl]diphenylphosphorylacetamide, and N-octyl-N-[2-(diphenylphosphoryl)ethyl]diphenylphosphorylacetamide was carried out by the methods of dipole moments, IR spectroscopy, and Density Functional Theory (DFT) B3PW91/6-311++G(df,p) calculations. In solution, these N,N-dialkyl substituted bisphosphorylated acetamides exist as a conformational equilibrium of several forms divided into two groups—with Z- or E-configuration of the carbonyl group and alkyl substituent, and syn or anti arrangement of the phosphoryl-containing fragments relative to the amide plane. The substituents at the phosphorus atoms have eclipsed cis- or staggered gauche-orientation relative to the P=O groups, and cis orientation of the substituents is due to the presence of intramolecular H-contacts P=O...H−C_phenyl or p,π conjugation between the phosphoryl group and the phenyl ring. Preferred conformers of acetamides molecules are additionally stabilized by various intramolecular hydrogen contacts with the participation of oxygen atoms of the P=O or C=O groups and hydrogen atoms of the methylene and ethylene bridges, alkyl substituents, and phenyl rings. However, steric factors, such as a flat amide fragment, the bulky phenyl groups, and the configuration of alkyl bridges, make a significant contribution to the realization of preferred conformers.
