Gel Polymer Electrolytes with Talc as a Natural Mineral Filler and a Biodegradable Polymer Matrix in Sodium-Ion Batteries

A gel polymer electrolyte based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is used in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The use of biodegradable and water-soluble polymer potentially reduces the negative environmental impact. The other components include sodium salt (NaPF6 ), sulfolane (TMS) as a plasticizer and talc. For the first time, natural and abundant talc has been used as an inert filler in a gel polymer electrolyte. The best results were obtained for moderate amounts of filler (1 and 3 wt%). Then, an increase in the conductivity, transference numbers, and thermal stability of the membranes was observed. Moreover, the presence of talc had a positive effect on the cyclability of the hard carbon electrode. The discharge capacity after 50 cycles of HC|1 % T_TMS|Na and HC|3 % T_TMS|Na was 243 and 225 mAh g-1 , respectively. The use of talc in gel polymer electrolytes containing sodium ions improves the safety and efficiency of SIBs.

Polymer Electrolytes Based on Na-Nafion Plasticized by Binary Mixture of Ethylene Carbonate and Sulfolane

The development of post-lithium current sources, such as sodium-ion batteries with improved energy characteristics and an increased level of safety, is one of the key issues of modern energy. It requires the search and study of materials (including electrolytes) for these devices. Polyelectrolytes with unipolar cationic conductivity based on Nafion® membranes are promising. In this work, the effect of swelling conditions of the Nafion® 115 membrane in Na+-form with mixtures of aprotic solvents such as ethylene carbonate and sulfolane on its physicochemical and electrotransport properties was studied. Nafion-Na+ membranes were swollen in a mixture of solvents at temperatures of 40, 60, and 80 °C. The results were obtained using methods of impedance spectroscopy, simultaneous thermal analysis, and IR spectroscopy. The best conductivity was observed for a membrane swelling at 80 °C in a mixture with a mass fraction of ethylene carbonate of 0.5, which reaches 10-4 S cm-1 at 30 °C and retains rather high values down to -60 °C (10-6 S cm-1). Thus, it is possible to expand the operating temperature range of a sodium battery by varying the composition of the polymer electrolyte and the conditions for its preparation.

Non-Flammable Sodium Asymmetric Imide Salt-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent for Supercapacitor Applications

This study reports two deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on alkaline imide salts with asymmetric anions as functional electrolytes for supercapacitor (SC) application. The eutectic mixture of sodium (fluorosulfonyl) (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (NaFTFSI) or sodium cyano-trifluoromethanesulfonyl imide (NaTFSICN) with ethylene carbonate (EC) delivers a non-flammable and stable liquid. The eutectic diagrams of the electrolytes directed to an optimal composition ( w salt = 0.25), hinging to that of conventional carbonate-based electrolytes, i.e., 1 mol L -1 . The volumetric properties of the DESs revealed a "stacking" effect, reflecting a strong coordination bond between the imide and EC anions without solvating the Na + cations. The DES transport properties (i.e., viscosity, conductivity, and ionicity) and temperature variations designate a high organization, similar to ionic liquids. The DESs, when coupled with activated carbon electrodes in a two-electrode symmetric configuration, yield specific capacities of 150 F g -1 at a normalized current density of 0.5 A g -1 (and 120 F g -1 at 2 A g -1 ). The SC maintained 80% of its initial capacity beyond 100 h of floating at an operating voltage of 2.4 V and showed a 150 mV per hour potential loss under self-discharge. The devised eutectic mixtures offer a promising new pathway for simple, safe, and effective electrolytes for SC applications.
