Abstract
In this study, a carbon-coated LiFePO4 (LFP/C) powder was chemically grafted with trifluoromethylphenyl groups in order to increase its hydrophobicity and to protect it from moisture. The modification was carried out by the spontaneous reduction of in situ generated 4-trifluoromethylphenyl ions produced by the diazotization of 4-trifluoromethylaniline. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the surface organic species of the modified powder. The hydrophobic properties of the modified powder were investigated by carrying out its water contact angle measurements. The presence of the trifluoromethylphenyl groups on the carbon-coated LiFePO4 powder increased its stability in deionized water and reduced its iron dissolution in the electrolyte used for assembling the battery. The thermogravimetric and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy analyses revealed that 0.2–0.3 wt.% Li was deinserted during grafting and that the loading of the grafted molecules varied from 0.5 to 0.8 wt.% depending on the reaction conditions. Interestingly, the electrochemical performance of the modified LFP/C was not adversely affected by the presence of the trifluoromethylphenyl groups on the carbon surface. The chemical relithiation of the grafted samples was carried out using LiI as the reducing agent and the lithium source in order to obtain fully lithiated grafted powders.

Abstract
Stable bimetallic catalysts composed of CoPtx/γ-Al2O3 (x = Pt/Co molar ratio) were synthesized by wet impregnation method followed by calcination and the H2 reduction. The powders were characterized using XRD, AAS, BET, SEM, EDX, TPR, and TPO techniques. The prepared catalysts were drop casted on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and catalytic performance was examined for hydrazine electrooxidation in alkaline medium via cyclic voltammetry (CV). All the compositions in CoPtx/γ-Al2O3 series showed high responses towards hydrazine electrooxidation, however; high activity of CoPt0.034/γ-Al2O3 catalyst inferred it as a best material with an anodic peak current (iP) response of 200 μA at 0.86 V. The prominent electrochemical (EC) responses for this composition are attributed to better accessible surface area resulting in a fast electron transfer. The CoPtx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts are reported as the robust and superior prospective materials for extensive electroanalytical and catalytic studies.

Abstract
Abstract
The unique properties of nanoparticles make them an extremely valuable modifying material, being used in electrochemical sensors. The features of nanoparticles affect the kinetics and thermodynamics of electrode processes of both nanoparticles and redox reactions occurring on their surface. The paper describes theoretical background and experimental studies of these processes. During the transition from macro- to micro- and nanostructures, the analytical characteristics of sensors modify. These features of metal nanoparticles are related to their size and energy effects, which affects the analytical characteristics of developed sensors. Modification of the macroelectrode with nanoparticles and other nanomaterials reduces the detection limit and improves the degree of sensitivity and selectivity of measurements. The use of nanoparticles as transducers, catalytic constituents, parts of electrochemical sensors for antioxidant detection, adsorbents, analyte transporters, and labels in electrochemical immunosensors and signal-generating elements is described.

Abstract
Toxic metal contamination of the environment is a global issue. In this paper, we present a low-cost and rapid production of amalgam electrodes used for determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in environmental samples (soils and wastewaters) by on-site analysis using difference pulse voltammetry. Changes in the electrochemical signals were recorded with a miniaturized potentiostat (width: 80 mm, depth: 54 mm, height: 23 mm) and a portable computer. The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated for the geometric surface of the working electrode 15 mm² that can be varied as required for analysis. The LODs were 80 ng·mL-1 for Cd(II) and 50 ng·mL-1 for Pb(II), relative standard deviation, RSD ≤ 8% (n = 3). The area of interest (Dolni Rozinka, Czech Republic) was selected because there is a deposit of uranium ore and extreme anthropogenic activity. Environmental samples were taken directly on-site and immediately analysed. Duration of a single analysis was approximately two minutes. The average concentrations of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in this area were below the global average. The obtained values were verified (correlated) by standard electrochemical methods based on hanging drop electrodes and were in good agreement. The advantages of this method are its cost and time effectivity (approximately two minutes per one sample) with direct analysis of turbid samples (soil leach) in a 2 M HNO₃ environment. This type of sample cannot be analyzed using the classical analytical methods without pretreatment.

Abstract
A piece of conductive cloth has been successfully constructed from polypyrrole-coated silver nanoparticle (Ag@PPy) composites decorated on electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers that formed the core-shell structure of Ag@PPy/PCL@PPy via a photo-induced one-step redox reaction. The photochemical reaction method both accelerated the rate of formation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and enhanced the dispersion of Ag NPs at the surface of PCL@PPy film. The resulting Ag@PPy/PCL@PPy-based cloth was flexible enough to be cut and pasted onto a glass carbon electrode for the preparation of a biosensor. The resulting biosensor showed good electrochemical activity toward the reduction of H2O2 with low detection limit down to 1 μM (S/N = 3) and wide linear detection ranging from 0.01 mM to 3.5 mM (R(2) = 0.990). This sensor has been applied to detect the trace H2O2 residual in milk. The cloth electrode has been proved to exhibit long-term stability, high selectivity, and excellent reproducibility.

Abstract
The grafting of benzene-trifluoromethylsulfonimide groups on LiFePO4/C was achieved by spontaneous reduction of in situ generated diazonium ions of the corresponding 4-amino-benzene-trifluoromethylsulfonimide. The diazotization of 4-amino-benzene-trifluoromethylsulfonimide was a slow process that required a high concentration of precursors to promote the spontaneous grafting reaction. Contact angle measurements showed a hydrophilic surface was produced after the reaction that is consistent with grafting of benzene-trifluoromethylsulfonimide groups. Elemental analysis data revealed a 2.1 wt % loading of grafted molecules on the LiFePO4/C powder. Chemical oxidation of the cathode material during the grafting reaction was detected by X-ray diffraction and quantified by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Surface modification improves the wettability of the cathode material, and better discharge capacities were obtained for modified electrodes at high C-rate. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed the resistance of the modified cathode was lower than that of the bare LiFePO4/C film electrode. Moreover, the modified cathode displayed superior capacity retention after 200 cycles of charge/discharge at 1 C.

Abstract
In this paper we show that the electronic properties of ultrathin tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films are heavily dependent on their thickness. By using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and conductive atomic force microscopy, it was found that a decrease of ta-C thickness from 30 to 7 nm leads to (i) the narrowing of the band gap; (ii) appearance of shallower monoenergetic traps as well as the increase of their concentration; (iii) the increase of the equilibrium concentration of free charge carriers and their mobility; which were caused by (iv) the increase in the sp(2) fraction. However, beyond a certain ta-C thickness (7 nm) the electronic properties of the studied samples start to deteriorate, which is highly likely related to titanium oxide formation at the Ti/ta-C interface. The same tendency is observed for the sample with beforehand air-formed native titanium oxide at the interface. With respect to the last point, it is suggested that the ta-C layer has no uniform coverage if its thickness is small enough (less than 7 nm). The experimental results were rationalized by detailed atomistic simulations. By using the so-called "Tauc plot" we introduce the possibility of the coexistence of bulk and surface band gaps originating from the large increase in sp(2) bonded carbon atoms in the surface region compared to that in the bulk ta-C. The results from the simulations were found to be consistent with the experimental measurements. The previously stated variation in the electronic properties of the layers as a function of their thickness was also exhibited in the electrochemical properties of the samples. It appears that the thinner ta-C layers had more facile electron transfer kinetics as determined with a ferrocenemethanol (FcMeOH) outer sphere redox system. However, if the ta-C layer thickness was reduced too much, the films were not stable anymore.

Abstract
A poly-o-phenylenediamine film modified glassy carbon electrode (PoPD/GC) was successfully prepared by cyclic voltammetry in acetate buffer solution. The polymerization mechanism of oPD is discussed. The impedance behavior and morphology of the PoPD membrane were characterized using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. It is discovered that the PoPD/GC prepared only in acetate buffer solution had dual electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation and reduction of H2O2. The optimal buffer solution pH, scanning rate, monomer concentration, and number of scannings for film forming were 4.2, 0.05 V s−1, 6.0 mmol L−1, and 30, respectively. The linear ranges between the anodic (Δia) or cathodic (Δic) current and H2O2 concentration were 0.07−1.0 × 104 and 0.04−4.5 × 104 μmol L−1, respectively. The corresponding calibration curves were Δia (μA) = 8.03c (mmol L−1) + 6.36 (n = 18, R2 = 0.9989) and Δic (μA) = −5.52c (mmol L−1) − 0.77 (n = 18, R2 = 0.9990) with a detection limit of 0.03 and 0.02 μmol L−1 (S/N = 3), respectively. The PoPD/GC prepared in the optimal conditions showed good stability and quick response (<0.2 s) to H2O2, which was successfully applied to the determination of H2O2 in real water samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Poly(ferrocenyl(3-bromopropyl)methylsilane) and poly(ethylene imine) are employed in a layer-by-layer deposition process to form covalently connected, redox-active multilayer thin films by means of an amine alkylation reaction. The stepwise buildup of these multilayers on silicon, ITO, and quartz substrates was monitored by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), static contact angle measurements, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and cyclic voltammetry, which provide evidence for a linear increase in multilayer thickness with the number of deposited bilayers. Upon oxidation and reduction, these covalently interconnected layers do not disassemble, in contrast to poly(ferrocenylsilane) (PFS) layers featuring similar backbone structures that are held together by electrostatic forces. The PFS/PEI multilayers are effective for the electrochemical sensing of ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide and show improved sensing performance at higher bilayer numbers. These covalently linked layers are readily derivatized further and can therefore be regarded as a versatile platform for creating robust, tailorable, redox-active interfaces with applications in sensing and biofuel cells.
