Abstract
BACKGROUND We present a case of a 29-year-old male patient without immunodeficiency who suffered from rapid osteonecrosis and tooth exfoliation resulting from herpes zoster (HZ) infection in the left maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve. Various complications associated with shingles infections have been reported, cases of osteonecrosis and tooth exfoliation due to HZ infection among young people without immunodeficiency are rare. In this case, we focus on the particular manifestation of HZ infection. CASE PRESENTATION The patient presented with clusters of erythema and papules, along with non-hemorrhagic blisters on the left face and the loss of the left upper incisor. All lesions were localized to the left side of the face without exceeding the midline. After receiving antibacterial and antiviral treatment, successful control over the infection was achieved; however, he experienced the loss of all upper teeth on the left side except for the first and second upper left molars. CONCLUSION This case highlights that rapid osteonecrosis and tooth exfoliation may occur among young individuals without immunodeficiency after HZ infection. HZ infection of the face should be taken very seriously to obtain prompt treatment to prevent the rare complications of bone necrosis and tooth loss as much as possible.

Abstract
The investigation's goal was to obtain further knowledge about the connection between Herpes Zoster infection and dentistry therapy for the osteonecrosis of the jaws, combining the review with a case report relevant to the purpose. It is important to study this association because it is a possible additional factor to be considered in the causes of the osteonecrosis of the jaws. We limited our search to English-language papers published between 1 January 2004 and 7 June 2024 in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science that were relevant to our topic. In the search approach, the Boolean keywords "Herpes Zoster AND osteonecros*" were used. Results: This study analyzed 148 papers from Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus, resulting in 95 articles after removing duplicates. Of these, 49 were removed because they were off topic, and 46 were confirmed. This study includes a qualitative analysis of the final 12 articles, removing 34 articles that were off topic. The literature highlights severe oral complications from Herpes Zoster reactivation, emphasizing the need for early diagnosis, comprehensive management, and multidisciplinary care. Treatment strategies include antiviral therapy, pain management, surgical debridement, and antibiotics. Immunocompromised individuals require vigilant monitoring and balanced immunosuppressive therapy. Further research is needed to enhance therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) occurs when latent varicella zoster virus reactivates in the ophthalmic division of the fifth cranial nerve (CNV1). HZO commonly affects older and immunocompromised patients. This disease is considered an ophthalmic emergency due to the wide range of associated ocular symptoms, including severe chronic pain and vision loss. HZO is typically a clinical diagnosis due to its classic presentation of a unilateral vesicular eruption in the dermatomes corresponding to CNV1. Timely treatment is imperative to minimize ocular morbidity in HZO, given that ocular involvement is present in 50% of affected patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Herpes zoster (HZ) is one of the most common skin diseases caused by viruses. Facial HZ develops when the varicella-zoster virus affects the trigeminal nerve, and alveolar osteonecrosis is a rare complication. However, the exact pathogenesis of postherpetic alveolar osteonecrosis remains unclear. CASE DESCRIPTION We encountered a patient who presented to the dermatology clinic with facial HZ and tooth exfoliation in the upper right jaw, and panoramic radiography revealed decreased bone density and poor alveolar socket healing in his right maxilla. Biopsy of the alveolar process revealed fragments of nonvital lamellar bone, which were devoid of osteoblasts and osteocytes and were surrounded by numerous neutrophils and bacterial aggregates. Thus, the diagnosis of alveolar osteonecrosis following facial HZ was confirmed. He then underwent resection of the osteonecrotic tissue. The pathological findings of postoperative tissue were similar to those of previous biopsies. Varicella-zoster virus and multiple types of bacteria were detected through next-generation sequencing, and the species of bacteria were consistent with the results of bacterial culture. Antibiotics and valaciclovir were administered during the perioperative period. The patient showed good recovery at the 9-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS The coexistence of bacterial and viral infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis of alveolar osteonecrosis following HZ. To our knowledge, we are the first to directly explore microbial pathogens in a case of postherpetic alveolar osteonecrosis through next-generation sequencing and bacterial culture. We recommend that oral examinations be carefully conducted for patients who are diagnosed with facial HZ, even if their facial rashes have faded away. We suggest that a prolonged and full-dose antiviral therapy course may be beneficial for the treatment of facial HZ with intraoral lesions. The implementation of dental preventive measures should be considered for patients with facial HZ. The application of antibiotics and excision of necrotic bone may reduce the abundance of bacteria in lesions and improve wound healing.

Abstract
Herpes zoster (HZ) is an infection characterized by the appearance of unilateral painful vesicular lesions on the skin and mucous membranes. Facial paralysis is one of the complications of HZ. The diagnosis of HZ can be easily missed when there is no lesion on the skin. We present a rare case with isolated oral mucosal lesions accompanied by facial palsy.

Abstract
Herpes zoster is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which becomes latent in ganglia after primary infection. When the varicella-zoster virus reactivates on the cranial nerve, the patient can suffer from cranial nerve palsy, pain, and skin lesions on the head and neck area. A 57-year-old immunocompetent male presented with dysphagia lasting 10 days. Computed tomography and other neurological findings were normal. However, laryngoscopy showed right vocal cord paralysis, which might be the reason for dysphagia in this patient. There was a grouped crusted lesion on the right posterior auricular area that appeared 5 days after the dysphagia. After famciclovir and prednisolone combination therapy, the patient was cured with no sequelae. This is a rare case of herpes zoster in an immunocompetent patient who presented with dysphagia. In addition, it was difficult to make an accurate diagnosis because his skin lesion appeared several days after dysphagia.

Abstract
Oral ulcers caused by herpes zoster virus infection are commonly encountered in daily clinical practice. However, in rare cases, sepsis or viremia can occur with serious outcomes; hence, these must be managed effectively. Here, we report a case of a patient with extensive ulceration caused by varicella zoster virus infection. Antiviral treatment was started early, and oral health management was started simultaneously, with oral hygiene instructions for pain control. As a result, the patient was able to resume oral food intake and was discharged from the hospital within a week. This case suggested that oral health management comprising supportive care, with the assistance of dentists and dental hygienists, as well as antiviral therapy, are important in the treatment of oral ulcers associated with herpes zoster virus infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Many comorbidities are associated with adult asthma and may exacerbate the asthma burden of disease. This study aims to investigate the risk for major oral diseases or oral-manifesting diseases in asthmatic compared with non-asthmatic adults. DESIGN We conducted a population-based matched cohort study with a 13.8-year follow-up. SETTING A baseline questionnaire was completed by participants in 1997 and follow-up data were extracted from the national hospital discharge registry of the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Finland from 1997 to 2014. PARTICIPANTS A total of 1394 adults with asthma were matched with 2398 adults without asthma based on sex, age and area of residence. Asthmatic adults were identified from the Drug Reimbursement Register of the Finnish Social Insurance Institution based on a special drug reimbursement right resulting from asthma. Participants without asthma were identified from the Population Register. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Oral health-related primary diagnoses were retrieved using codes from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition and divided into groups of diseases. Cox's proportional hazards models stratified by matching unit and models matched and adjusted for pack-years, education level and body mass index (when possible) were used to evaluate the matched and further adjusted HRs for diseases comparing asthmatic and non-asthmatic cohorts. RESULTS Adult asthma was associated with a higher risk for any oral-manifesting disease (adjusted HR 1.41, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.80), herpes zoster (adjusted HR 6.18, 95% CI 1.21 to 31.6), benign tumours of the oral cavity and pharynx (matched HR 1.94, 95% CI 1.05 to 3.56) and dermatological diseases (pemphigus, pemphigoid, dermatitis herpetiformis, psoriasis and lichen planus, HR 1.67, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.78). CONCLUSIONS In this study, adult asthmatics experienced a higher risk for a major oral disease or oral-manifesting disease.

Abstract
Herpes zoster (shingles) is caused by the herpes zoster virus and is characterized by pain and unilateral vesicular rash that typically affects one dermatome. Symptoms tend to resolve over 10-15 days. This case report describes the 75-year-old author’s herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) accompanied by severe orbital edema. The upper eyelid and the proximal nasal area were also affected. The author felt an intermittent throbbing pain in more than three dermatomes including the frontal, orbital, temporal, and occipital/nuchal areas. Since the prodromal and erythematous phase started with atypical signs, conventional acyclovir treatment was administered only 96 hours after the appearance of the first symptoms. Acyclovir treatment was therefore complemented with the experimental viral superinfection therapy (SIT). Superinfection is a host-directed therapy, during which the non-pathogenic avian live-attenuated infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) vaccine delivers its double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) cargo to host cells and activates their natural antiviral interferon (IFN) gene defense system from within. Most symptoms resolved within five days. Given the author's advanced age of 75 years, such speedy recovery is unlikely to be explained by the belated acyclovir treatment alone.

Abstract
Herpes zoster (HZ) is a viral disease which is primarily caused by the nerve tissue, but its treatment necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a DNA virus that causes both primary and recurrent infection. HZ, also known as shingles, is a unique condition induced by VZV reactivation. Neuropathic pain, headache, malaise and sleep disruption are all prodromal symptoms in such cases. HZ generates a pruritic, localized and vesicular rash that is usually unilateral. Individuals who are immunocompromised as a result of disease or receiving any treatment are also at increased risk, regardless of their age. HZ and its sequelae set a major strain on patient's caregivers, health-care system and business. Despite recent advances, prevention and treatment of HZ, consequences remain a therapeutic challenge. This is a case report of HZ infection in a 56-year-old female patient who was managed with comprehensive medical treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, results from reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. It commonly presents with burning pain and vesicular lesions with unilateral distribution and affects the thoracic and cervical sites in up to 60 and 20% of cases, respectively. The branches of the trigeminal nerves are affected in up to 20% of cases. Multidermatomal involvement of the trigeminal nerves has been only anecdotally described in immunocompetent subjects. CASE PRESENTATION A 71-year-old previously healthy male presented with grouped vesicular and impetiginized lesions with crusts on the left half of the face of two-weeks duration. The lesions first developed on the left nasal tip and progressively worsened with unilateral appearance of vesicular lesions on the left forehead, face, ala nasi, nasal vestibulum and columella, as well as on the left side of hard and soft palate. The affected edematous erythematous areas corresponded to the distribution of the left ophthalmic (V1) and maxillary (V2) branches of the trigeminal nerve, including the infraorbital and nasopalatine nerves of the maxillary branch responsible for the oral cavity involvement. Viral DNA amplification by polymerase chain reaction confirmed the presence of Varicella zoster virus. The patient was started on oral valaciclovir with rapid recovery. CONCLUSIONS Among immunocompetent patients, herpes zoster is considered a self-limited localized infection. Our observation provides a rare but paradigmatic example of herpes zoster with involvement of both the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve in an immunocompetent patient. Immunocompetence status and age-specific screening should be warranted in case of atypical involvement and according to the patient's history, while treatment with antiviral drugs should be rapidily initiated in patients at risk.

Abstract
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) plays an important role in maintaining skin health and can promote the differentiation of keratinocytes and decrease melanin synthesis, leading to antioxidant protection against UV-induced photodamage. Normal skin needs high concentrations of vitamin C, which plays many roles in the skin, including the formation of the skin barrier and collagen in the dermis, the ability to counteract skin oxidation, and the modulation of cell signal pathways of cell growth and differentiation. However, vitamin C deficiency can cause or aggravate the occurrence and development of some skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). Levels of vitamin C in plasma are decreased in AD, and vitamin C deficiency may be one of the factors that contributes to the pathogenesis of PCT. On the other hand, high doses of vitamin C have significantly reduced cancer cell viability, as well as invasiveness, and induced apoptosis in human malignant melanoma. In this review, we will summarize the effects of vitamin C on four skin diseases (porphyria cutanea tarda, atopic dermatitis, malignant melanoma, and herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia) and highlight the potential of vitamin C as a therapeutic strategy to treat these diseases, emphasizing the clinical application of vitamin C as an adjuvant for drugs or physical therapy in other skin diseases.
