Testing the information-motivation-behavioural skills model of diabetes self-management among Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes: a protocol of a 3-month follow-up study

Self-inefficacy's impact on well-being indices in students self-identifying with cluttering characteristics

INTRODUCTION

Cluttering, a fluency disorder characterized by fast and irregular speech patterns, receives relatively limited research attention. Consequently, the association between cluttering and measures of well-being remains unexplored. In contrast, stuttering, another fluency disorder, has been associated with anxiety and depression. The present study examines whether an individual's experience of cluttering characteristics is related to alterations in both positive and negative measures of well-being. To achieve this, we assessed the relationship between Self-Identified Cluttering Characteristics (SICC) and measures of well-being in a sizeable sample of 1201 university students. Our main objective was to explore the potential impact of self-inefficacy on the association between SICC and well-being.

METHODS

Consistent with prior research, participants identified themselves as having cluttering characteristics (SICC) or no-cluttering characteristics (SINCC) based on a verbal and written explanation of the disorder. They also completed questionnaires on psychological well-being indices and self-inefficacy.

RESULTS

In total, 276 respondents identified themselves as having cluttering characteristics. In regression models, both SICC and self-inefficacy were predictive of greater negative well-being, increased depressive symptoms, and heightened psychosomatic symptoms. Interestingly, ADHD diagnosis was associated with less negative well-being. Positive well-being indicators (positive future orientation and subjective happiness) were solely predicted by self-inefficacy. Supporting these findings, supplementary regressions including only 56 SICC participants who reported being treated for cluttering yielded similar results. Utilizing Hayes's PROCESS computational procedures to test moderation revealed that self-inefficacy significantly moderated the association between SICC and negative well-being (depressive symptoms) as well as the association between SICC and positive well-being (positive future orientation).

CONCLUSIONS

The findings underscore alterations in well-being among individuals who identify themselves as experiencing cluttering characteristics. Primarily, heightened negative well-being was noted in those with SICC, yet individual self-inefficacy reports mitigated this effect. Overall, SICC exacerbates negative well-being rather than diminishing positive well-being. These findings point to the importance of integrating mental health assessment and intervention into clinical practice for individuals with cluttering symptoms and the potential benefits of interventions targeting self-inefficacy to improve overall well-being in this population.

The Effectiveness of Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model on Self-Care Practices in Early Pregnancy to Prevent Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Iranian Overweight and Obese Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common metabolic dysfunction in pregnancy and as overweight and obesity are of the major risk factors. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Information-Motivation and Behavioral skills (IMB) model-based counseling on preventing GDM in overweight and obese pregnant women.

METHODS

This randomized controlled trial study was conducted on 137 pregnant women in two groups; education and counseling IMB model-based for four sessions (n = 70), and antenatal usual care (AUC) (n = 67). This study was conducted on overweight and obese pregnant women, at the 12 to 16 weeks' gestation and recruited from the Prenatal Clinic of Rohani Hospital in north of Iran. Blood glucose was measured before and 8 weeks after the intervention. Descriptive and inferential statistics including mean, frequency, t-test, chi-square and ANCOVA were used.

RESULTS

The prevalence of GDM was lower in the intervention group than the control group (10% and 29.9%, respectively, RR = 0.33, CI 95% (0.15- 0.74) p = .004) as well as mean fasting blood glucose (Cohen's d = 0.28, p = .07), and glucose tolerance test at the first and second hour (d = 0.41 and Cohen's d = 0.73, respectively, p < .01).

CONCLUSIONS

A lifestyle intervention in early pregnancy by IMB counseling in overweight and obese pregnant women can be effective in decrease GDM.

The effect of model-based telephone counseling on HbA1c and self-management for individuals with type 2 diabetes: A randomized controlled trial

AIMS

This study was conducted to examine the effect of telephone counseling based on the Information, Motivation, Behavioral Skills (IMB) Model on HbA1c and self-management in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

METHODS

This study was conducted between January 2019 and September 2019 with a total of 63 (31 interventions, 32 controls) T2DM patients. The intervention group was followed-up for a total of 12 weeks, after 45-60 min of patient training based on IMB, a weekly reminder message and a phone call every two weeks. No intervention was made to the control group. Data were collected at the beginning of the study and at the end of the 12th week. The data were obtained using a Patient Information Form, the Type 2 Diabetes Self-Efficacy Scale, the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ), the Perceived Diabetes Self Management Scale (PDSMS) and glycemic control (HbA1c).

RESULTS

Participants were on average 54 years old and the majority were female (58.1%). According to the results of the covariance analysis (ANCOVA), there was a statistically significant difference between the pre-post-test HbA1c (F:13.589; p < 0.001), weight (F:32.176; p < 0.001) and systolic blood pressure (F:7.109; p = 0.01). However, there was no significant difference in diastolic blood pressure between the intervention and control groups (F:2.686; p = 0.106). Also, after three months of follow-up, self-efficacy (F:26.632; p < 0.001), self-management (F:44.487; p < 0.001) and self-management perceptions (F:71.132; p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the intervention group.

CONCLUSION

The researchers concluded that telephone counseling based on the IMB model could be a suitable method to improve glycemic control and self-care behaviors in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The Effect of Applying the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model on Treatment Adherence in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: A Quasi-Experimental Study

BACKGROUND

Non-adherence complicates the management of patients with cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to determine the effect of applying the information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model on the treatment adherence among these patients.

METHODS

This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 112 patients with cardiovascular disease in Nemazee and Al-zahra hospitals in Shiraz, Iran, from October 2019 to July 2020. Eligible patients were selected and divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention was based on an integration of IMB model constructs and included 10 motivational-educational sessions for three months, followed by telephone consultations for six months. Data were collected before, and three and six months after the end of the motivational-educational sessions using adherence questionnaire in patients with chronic diseases, and adherence in chronic disease scale for medication adherence. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22, and descriptive statistics, chi-square, independent t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA were performed. P<0.05 was considered significant.

RESULTS

The intervention and control groups were homogenous based on demographic characteristics. Repeated measure ANOVA findings revealed an increasing trend in the mean scores of the intervention group in treatment adherence from 51.10±3.20 at baseline to 66.40±5.50 three months and 73.80±6.80 six months after the end of the intervention (P<0.001). Furthermore, based on repeated measure ANOVA findings, the mean score of the intervention group in medication adherence significantly increased from 20.10+3 at baseline to 24.10+2.40 three months and 24.50+3.20 six months after the end of the intervention (P<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Applying the IMB model promoted adherence to treatment and medication among patients with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, such interventions are recommended for these patients.
