Abstract
OBJECTIVES Establishing direct reference intervals (RIs) for paediatric patients is a very challenging endeavour. Indirect RIs can address this problem, using existing clinical laboratory databases from real-world data research. Compared to the traditional direct method, the indirect approach is highly practical, widely applicable, and low-cost. Considering the relevance of dyslipidemia in the paediatric age, to provide better laboratory services to the local paediatric population, we established population-specific lipid RIs via data mining. METHODS Our laboratory information system was searched for cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) of patients aged less than 18 years, performed from January 2009 until December 2022. RIs were estimated using RefineR algorithm. RESULTS Values from 215,594 patients were initially collected. After refining data on the basis of specific exclusion criteria that left 17,933 patients, we determined the RIs for each analyte, including corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Age and sex partitions were required for proper stratification of the heterogenous subpopulations. Age-related variations in TC and TG values were observed mainly in children until 5 years. RIs were defined for children less than 3 years and for those of 3-18 years. In our population, the obtained RIs were comparable with those of the literature, but the upper TG limit in subjects under the age of 3 (2.03 mmol/L with 95% CI: 1.45-2.86) was lower than that previously reported. CONCLUSIONS Our RIs, necessary for paediatric lipid monitoring, are tailored to the serviced patient population as should be done whenever possible.

Abstract
Background The reference intervals (RIs) of adult blood lipid parameters currently used in China are not derived from the results of research in local populations and have not been adjusted for age and sex. In this study, we aimed to determine accurate RIs for blood lipid parameters and blood glucose (GluG) for Chinese adults using a national multicenter study. Methods A total of 11,333 adults between 18 and 90 years of age were recruited in seven representative regions in China between June 2020 and December 2020. Hospitals participating in the study were regrouped into two geographical regions, southern China (Changsha, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Nanning) and northern China (Beijing, Shenyang, and Ningxia), according to their geographical and administrative location. All samples were freshly collected and measured collectively in one laboratory on the Mindray full Automatic biochemical analyzer chemistry BS2000 analytical systems. Outliers were removed using the Tukey test. Three-level nested analysis of variance and scatter plot were used to explore the variations in sex, age, and region. Percentile curves of each indicator were plotted using the least mean square (LMS) method. The lower limit (2.5th percentile) and the upper limit (97.5th percentile) of the RI were determined by using nonparametric statistical methods. We also calculated the 90% confidence interval (CI) for the lower and upper limits. Results A total of 8,283 participants were enrolled in the final analysis, with 3,593 (43.4%) men and 4,690 (56.6%) women. Regionality was observed in three analytes [small dense low density lipoprotein cholesterol (sd-LDLC), GluG, and apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1)]. In northern China, the sd-LDLC and GluG levels in Shenyang were significantly higher than those in Ningxia and Beijing (P<0.05). In southern China, the sd-LDLC and GluG levels in Nanning were significantly higher than those in the three other cities (P<0.05), whereas the sd-LDLC and GluG levels in Chengdu were significantly lower than those in the three other cities (P<0.05). The level of ApoA1 in Chengdu was significantly higher than that in the three other cities. The homocysteine (HCY) level in male participants was clearly higher than that in female participants [ratio of standard deviation (SDR)sex =0.56], whereas the levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) (SDRsex =0.40) and ApoA1 (SDRsex =0.27) in males were lower. The GluG and HCY level increased gradually with age. In females aged 45-55 years, there was an interesting change in scatter charts, where triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) increased rapidly. We also found that for the age group of >55 years, the levels of TG and TC in females gradually surpassed those in males. Conclusions The findings of this study may help establish age- and sex-specific reference values for the blood lipids of Chinese adults and serve as a valuable guide for the screening, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and monitoring of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Abstract
Breastfeeding is widely promoted. Experimental evidence concerning long-term benefits is limited. Observational studies are open to bias from confounding by socio-economic position. We assessed the association of breastfeeding with late adolescent lipid sub-fractions, particularly apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-c), overall and by sex. We took advantage of a setting where breastfeeding has little association with higher socio-economic position and where several results from randomized controlled trials of breastfeeding promotion have been replicated. We used the population-representative "Children of 1997" birth cohort comprising 88% of births in Hong Kong in April and May 1997. Associations of breastfeeding in the first 3 months of life (never, mixed, exclusive) with lipid sub-fractions were obtained using linear regression adjusted for potential confounders including parental socio-economic position, maternal place of birth, type of delivery, gestational age, and birth weight. Differences by sex were assessed. Multiple imputation and inverse probability weighting were used to recover the original sample. Of the 3462 participants included, mean age was 17.6 years and 48.8% were girls. Mean ApoB was 0.74 g/L (standard deviation 0.15). Exclusive versus never breastfeeding was associated with lower ApoB (-0.027 g/L, 95% confidence interval (CI)-0.046 to-0.007, p = 0.007) and lower non-HDL-c (-0.143 mmol/L, 95% CI-0.237 to-0.048) with similar estimates by sex. CONCLUSION Breastfeeding may provide some population-level lifelong protection against cardiovascular disease. This study supports policies promoting breastfeeding as a modifiable exposure that contributes to a healthy start in life as an investment for lifelong cardiovascular disease prevention. WHAT IS KNOWN • Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is a recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but whether breastfeeding affects ApoB in later life overall and by sex is unknown. WHAT IS NEW • Exclusive breastfeeding in the first 3 months of life was associated with lower ApoB in late adolescence, with similar estimates for both sexes. • The inverse association of breastfeeding with ApoB suggests that breastfeeding could reduce cardiovascular disease and overall mortality over the lifespan.

Abstract
Childhood dyslipidemia is considered a major worldwide health issue. Identification of children with dyslipidemia is notably essential for healthcare providers in establishing and releasing recommendations for the management and prevention of future CVD. In the present study, we provided reference values for the lipid profile from Kawar (a city in the south of Iran) cohort of healthy children and adolescents aged 9-18 years. 472 subjects (234 girls and 238 boys) contributed to the current prospective cohort study using a systematic random sample stratified by age. Fasting lipid levels were measured by enzymatic reagents. Dual-energyX-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was used to evaluate puberty based on the Tanner stages. LMS Chart Maker and Excel software were used to construct the gender-specific reference plots showing the 3, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, and 97th percentiles of BMI, cholesterol, TG, HDL, TC, LDL, and non-HDL. The outcomes revealed that concentrations of TC, LDL, and non-HDL were drastically greater in girls as compared to boys. TG increased with age in both genders, while HDL, TC, LDL, and non-HDL declined. We also observed that puberty was associated with higher lipid values in boys and girls except for TG in boys. Our study prepared age- and sex-specific reference intervals for the lipid profile in Iranian children and adolescents. Converted to age and gender percentiles, these reference intervals are expected to serve as an effective and consistent tool for doctors to identify dyslipidemia among children and adolescents.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective To date, no reference interval is available for lipid profile, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, etc., in a non-fasting state. Hence, the study was taken up with the objective of exploring the possibility of establishing a reference interval for non-fasting lipid profile consisting of serum TC, TG, LDL, HDL, and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol.
Materials and Methods A total of 1,350 apparently healthy subjects, including 636 healthy men and 714 healthy women of 18 years and beyond of age, were enrolled in the study. Reference individuals were recruited using cluster sampling method from various villages and semi-urban regions irrespective of their sex, religion, socioeconomic status, or any other demographic profile, and samples were analyzed in Beckman Coulter AU480 analyzer.
Results The mean age of 1,350 participants was 38.23 ± 15.94 years. We found that all the test parameters require a different reference interval than the established fasting reference range, except for HDL cholesterol in females. The data were subdivided into subjects below 40 years, between 40 and 60 years, and older than 60 years of age. All five parameters in the lipid profile were individually analyzed and were compared age group-wise and gender-wise with the total study population. Significant differences in the various dataset were found.
Conclusion A shift toward non-fasting lipid interval measurement is, thus, a piece of evidence-driven mechanism. Even from a patient's perspective, it sets in ease and convenience in lipid-profile testing, subsequently leading to a more compliant cardiovascular management and monitoring.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current reference values for pediatric dyslipidemia used in China were not developed based on local population studies and did not consider age and sex differences. OBJECTIVE In this study, we aimed to determine suitable reference values for total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (nonHDL-C) for Chinese children and adolescents using a national multicenter school-based study. METHODS A total of 15,830 students aged 6-17 years were recruited from seven provinces of China. Age- and sex-specific percentile values for each lipid indicator were derived based on levels measured in the fasting state, and percentile curves of each indicator were plotted using the LMS method. RESULTS Serum lipid levels varied considerably with age in both sexes. Among boys, the cut-off value for high TC, nonHDL-C, LDL-C, and TG, based on the value of the 95th percentiles, ranged from 4.58 to 5.39, 3.34 to 3.99, 2.69 to 3.31, and 1.22 to 1.83 mmol/L, respectively; among girls, the cut-off value for high TC, nonHDL-C, LDL-C, and TC ranged from 5.01 to 5.39, 3.66 to 3.97, 2.97 to 3.32, and 1.41 to 1.93 mmol/L, respectively. The cut-point for low HDL-C ranged from 0.84 to 1.08 mmol/L in boys and from 0.89 to 1.04 mmol/L in girls. CONCLUSION These findings may help to determine age- and sex-specific reference values for serum lipids among Chinese children and adolescents and provide valuable guidance for screening of dyslipidemia.
