Abstract
Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most prevalent eye diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Latilactobacillus sakei (L. sakei) either as an ophthalmic bacterial lysate (drops, no live organism) or as an oral probiotic (capsules) on immunological and clinical outcomes of patients with DED. This study was a randomized, placebo-controlled, triple-masking clinical trial with four parallel arms. Patients were randomly assigned in a 2x2 factorial design combining active vs placebo capsules and active vs placebo eye drops in a 1:1x1:1 ratio. The ophthalmic drops are approved for use in the European Union as a medical device (CE registration code 0425-MED-004235). A total of 40 patients were evaluated. DED signs and symptoms decreased significantly by using active drops compared to placebo, as measured by the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Tear Break-up Time (TBUT), and Schirmer I tests (all p<0.0001). Conversely, neither active capsules nor their interaction effect with active drops achieved significance vs placebo. There was also a significant decrease in the tear levels of IL-6 (p=0.0007), TNFα (p<0.0001), and IFNγ (p<0.0001) in patients receiving active drops. Intake of both active products (drops and capsules) was well tolerated. Postbiotic ophthalmic formulation containing L. sakei lysate significantly improved the signs and symptoms of DED and suppressed ocular surface inflammatory response. Conversely, oral intake of L.sakei as a probiotic capsule had no effect in these patients (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04938908).

Abstract
This review scrutinizes the intricate interplay between the microbiome and the human body, exploring its multifaceted dimensions and far-reaching implications. The human microbiome, comprising diverse microbial communities inhabiting various anatomical niches, is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of human health and disease. Through an extensive examination of current research, this review elucidates the dynamic interactions between the microbiome and host physiology across multiple organ systems. Key topics include the establishment and maintenance of microbiota diversity, the influence of host factors on microbial composition, and the bidirectional communication pathways between microbiota and host cells. Furthermore, we delve into the functional implications of microbiome dysbiosis in disease states, emphasizing its role in shaping immune responses, metabolic processes, and neurological functions. Additionally, this review discusses emerging therapeutic strategies aimed at modulating the microbiome to restore host-microbe homeostasis and promote health. Microbiota fecal transplantation represents a groundbreaking therapeutic approach in the management of dysbiosis-related diseases, offering a promising avenue for restoring microbial balance within the gut ecosystem. This innovative therapy involves the transfer of fecal microbiota from a healthy donor to an individual suffering from dysbiosis, aiming to replenish beneficial microbial populations and mitigate pathological imbalances. Abstract
Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a prevalent and multifactorial disease that leads to a self-perpetuating cycle of inflammation and damage to the ocular surface. This results in symptoms such as redness, burning, and blurred vision, which can negatively affect a patient's quality of life. While treatments are available to manage DES, they only temporarily relieve symptoms. Furthermore, long-term use of certain medications can cause harm to the ocular surface. Therefore, there is a need for safer and effective treatments for DES. This review highlights the latest advancements in DES therapy, providing valuable insights into ongoing efforts to improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a systemic disease that can affect multiple organs as a consequence of an allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant. One organ system that is often affected in GVHD is the eyes. Ocular GVHD (oGVHD) may involve various structures within the eye including the lacrimal glands, eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, and nasolacrimal ducts, and is a source of morbidity in patients with GVHD. Common presenting features of GVHD overlap with dry eye disease (DED), including decreased tear production, epithelial disruption, and Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). In this review, we aim to compare oGVHD and DED to better understand the similarities and differences between the conditions, with a focus on pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical features, and treatments.

Abstract
In the field of Ophthalmology, the mNGS 16S rRNA sequencing method of studying the microbiota and ocular microbiome is gaining more and more weight in the scientific community. This study aims to characterize the ocular microbiota of patients diagnosed with keratoconus who have not undergone any prior surgical treatment using the mNGS 16S rRNA sequencing method. Samples of naïve keratoconus patients were collected with an eNAT with 1 mL of Liquid Amies Medium (Copan Brescia, Italy), and DNA was extracted and analyzed with 16S NGS. The microbiota analysis showed a relative abundance of microorganisms at the phylum level in each sample collected from 38 patients with KC and 167 healthy controls. A comparison between healthy control and keratoconus samples identified two genera unique to keratoconus, Pelomonas and Ralstonia. Our findings suggest that alterations in the microbiota may play a role in the complex scenario of KC development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The dog is the most popular companion animal and is a valuable large animal model for several human diseases. Canine immune-mediated hematological diseases, including immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), share many features in common with autoimmune hematological diseases of humans. The gut microbiome has been linked to systemic illness, but few studies have evaluated its association with immune-mediated hematological disease. To address this knowledge gap, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to profile the fecal microbiota of dogs with spontaneous IMHA and ITP at presentation and following successful treatment. In total, 21 affected and 13 healthy control dogs were included in the study. RESULTS IMHA/ITP is associated with remodeling of fecal microbiota, marked by decreased relative abundance of the spirochete Treponema spp., increased relative abundance of the pathobionts Clostridium septicum and Escherichia coli, and increased overall microbial diversity. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that Treponema spp. were associated with decreased risk of IMHA/ITP (odds ratio [OR] 0.24-0.34), while Ruminococcaceae UCG-009 and Christensenellaceae R-7 group were associated with increased risk of disease (OR = 6.84 [95% CI 2-32.74] and 8.36 [95% CI 1.85-71.88] respectively). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates an association of immune-mediated hematological diseases in dogs with fecal dysbiosis, and points to specific bacterial genera as biomarkers of disease. Microbes identified as positive or negative risk factors for IMHA/ITP represent an area for future research as potential targets for new diagnostic assays and/or therapeutic applications.

Abstract
This scoping review examined the relationship between Dry Eye Disease (DED) and Uveitis. We searched Pubmed, Embase, and LILACS databases for articles in which at least one patient had DED and uveitis concomitantly. The search produced 2381 records, and 24 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. We concluded that DED and uveitis of any etiology could appear concomitantly in patients of any age. However, both diseases seem to coexist more frequently in middle-aged women and cases of anterior uveitis. Therefore, it is crucial that ophthalmologists actively look for the coexistence of ocular surface abnormalities, especially in patients with these characteristics. Future studies should establish and quantify the risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms of this coexistence to achieve an early diagnosis of both etiologies and comprehensive management of these patients.

Abstract
Dry eye has two basic subdivisions: aqueous deficient dry eye (ADDE), with SS a major cause; and evaporative dry eye (EDE), due to either intrinsic or extrinsic factors. SS is a chronic inflammatory disorder defined by dysfunction of the exocrine glands leading to dry eye and dry mouth. The objective of this article was to carry out a systematic and critical review of several scientific publications on dry eye disease, with the aim of providing general recommendations to distinguish dry eye and its different variants in patients with SS, during the period 1979 to 2020, using search engines for articles indexed in Scopus, Latindex, Scielo, Clinical Trials, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane, allowing the analysis of 132 articles published in indexed journals on the subject of dry eye disease and SS, evidencing its conceptualization, prevalence, risk factors, etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment.
