Abstract
INTRODUCTION Suicidal behaviour (SB) has a complex aetiology. Although suicidal ideation (SI) is considered the most important risk factor for future attempts, many people who engage in SB do not report it. METHODS We investigated neurological, metabolic, and psychopathological correlates of lifetime SB in two independent groups of patients with major depression (sample 1: n = 230; age: 18-65 years; sample 2: n = 258; age >60 years) who did not report SI during an index episode. RESULTS Among adults (sample 1), SB was reported by 141 subjects (58.7%) and severe SB by 33 (15%). After controlling for interactions, four risk factors for SB emerged: male gender (OR 2.55; 95% CI: 1.06-6.12), negative self-perception (OR 1.76; 95% CI: 1.08-2.87), subthreshold hypomania (OR 4.50; 95% CI: 1.57-12.85), and sexual abuse (OR 3.09; 95% CI: 1.28-7.48). The presence of at least two of these factors had the best accuracy in predicting SB: sensitivity = 57.6% (39.2-74.5); specificity = 75.1% (68.5-82.0); PPV = 27.9% (20.9-37.2); NPV = 91.4% (87.6-94.1). In older patients (sample 2), 23 subjects (9%) reported previous suicide attempts, which were characterized by earlier onset (25 years: OR 0.95: 0.92-0.98), impaired verbal performance (verbal fluency: OR 0.95: 0.89-0.99), higher HDL cholesterol levels (OR 1.04: 1.00-1.07) and more dyskinesias (OR 2.86: 1.22-6.70). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that SB is common in major depressive disorder, even when SI is not reported. In these individuals it is feasible and recommended to investigate both psychiatric and organic risk factors. The predictive power of models excluding SI is comparable to that of models including SI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore male-female differences in suicide ideation (SI) and suicide risk factors in major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS We analysed 482 adults (sample 1) and 438 elderly outpatients (sample 2) with MDD. Sample 1 was treated with different antidepressant combinations (escitalopram; bupropion plus escitalopram; venlafaxine plus mirtazapine) and assessed by means of the Concise Health Risk Tracking (SI), Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology, Altman Mania Rating Scale and Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire. Sample 2 was treated with venlafaxine and assessed using the Hamilton scale for depression, Anxiety Sensitivity Index and Penn State Worry Questionnaire for anxiety, Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation and Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. RESULTS In sample 1, females had greater depression severity (O.R 0.961 99%CI: 0.929 - 0.995), males reported more alcohol abuse (O.R 1.299 99%CI: 1.118 - 1.509) and active SI (O.R 1.109 99%CI: 1.005 - 1.255). In sample 2 men showed more severe SI (O.R 1.067; 99%CI: 1.014 - 1.122) and weight loss (OR = 5.89 99%CI: 1.01 - 34.19), women more gastrointestinal symptoms. CONCLUSIONS In these selected samples, although women had more severe depression, men had more suicide risk factors. Such differences might contribute to men's increased suicide risk.

Abstract
Background The percentage of older adults living alone is rapidly increasing, improving the health status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in this group is becoming a more significant public health issue. This study aimed to examine the changes in the HRQoL of older South Korean adults living alone and identify the factors that affect their HRQoL. Methods A longitudinal study design was followed. Data were collected at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Participants consisting of 789 older adults living alone in S*City aged>65 years completed a cohort survey regarding health status and HRQoL from August 2018 to August 2019. Trained interviewers conducted face-to-face interviews with the participants using a validated questionnaire (physical health, mental health, social health, and HRQoL). Generalized estimating equations were used to assess the change in health status and the interaction effect of time and gender. Then, a stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors related to HRQoL. Results Time differences were observed in the subjective evaluation of health status (SEH), IPAQ scores, frailty, nutritional status, and depression. Gender differences were observed in the SEH, IPAQ, frailty, loneliness, depression, and social support. The interaction between time and gender was observed in the IPAQ and HRQoL. At baseline, SEH, depressive symptoms, gender, frailty, and age were associated with HRQoL. After one year, HRQoL was associated with SEH, frailty, depressive symptoms, cost of living, suicidal thoughts, gender, social support, loneliness, and suicide attempts. Conclusion Our results highlight that HRQoL is associated with physical health, mental health, and social support. Future detailed studies are needed to determine whether governments and communities can prevent depression, loneliness, and suicidal thoughts through psychological support and provide economic support to improve the quality of life of older adults living alone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between MCI and passive/active suicidal ideation in a population-based sample of older adults. METHOD The sample included 916 participants without dementia acquired from the two population-based studies Prospective Population Study of Women (PPSW) and the H70-study. Cognitive status was assessed using a comprehensive neuropsychiatric examination and classified according to the Winblad et al. criteria: 182 participants were classified as cognitively intact, 448 had cognitive impairment but did not fulfill MCI criteria and 286 were diagnosed with MCI. Passive/active suicidal ideation was assessed using the Paykel questions. RESULTS Passive or active suicidal ideation (any level) was reported by 16.0% of those with MCI and 1.1% of those who were cognitively intact. MCI was associated with past year life-weariness (OR 18.32, 95% CI 2.44-137.75) and death wishes (OR 5.30, 95% CI 1.19-23.64) in regression models adjusted for covariates including major depression. Lifetime suicidal ideation was reported more frequently in MCI (35.7%) than in cognitively intact participants (14.8%). MCI was associated with lifetime life-weariness (OR 2.90, 95% CI 1.67-5.05). Among individuals with MCI, impairments in memory and visuospatial ability were associated with both past year and lifetime life-weariness. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest reports of past year as well as lifetime passive suicidal ideation to be more frequent among individuals with MCI compared to those cognitively intact, indicating that individuals with MCI may constitute a high-risk group for suicidal behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempts (SAs) by adolescent patients with depression have become serious public health problems. There is still insufficient research evidence on the effects of NSSI and SAs on neurocognitive functioning in adolescents. Cognitive function alterations may be associated with SAs and self-injury. NSSI and SAs have different influencing factors. METHODS Participants were recruited from outpatient clinics and included 142 adolescent patients with depression (12-18 years old). This cohort included the SAs group (n = 52), NSSI group (n = 65), and depression without SAs/NSSI control group (n = 25). All participants underwent a clinical interview and neuropsychological assessment for group comparisons, and post-hoc tests were performed. Finally, partial correlation analysis was used to explore factors related to changes in cognitive function. RESULTS The SAs group performed significantly worse than the control group in executive function and working memory. The depression score was directly proportional to the executive function of the SAs group, whereas cognitive functioning in the NSSI group was associated with borderline traits and rumination. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that impairment of executive function and working memory may be a common pattern in adolescent depressed patients with SAs. However, borderline traits and rumination may be indicative of NSSI but not SAs.

Abstract
In clinical practice, patients with language impairments often exhibit suicidal ideation (SI) and suicidal behavior (SB, covering the entire range from suicide attempts, SA, to completed suicides). However, only few studies exist regarding this subject. We conducted a mini-review on the possible associations between neurologic language impairment (on the motor, comprehension, and semantic sides) and SI/SB. Based on the literature review, we hypothesized that language impairments exacerbate psychiatric comorbidities, which, in turn, aggravate language impairments. Patients trapped in this vicious cycle can develop SI/SB. The so-called “affective prosody” provides some relevant insights concerning the interaction between the different language levels and the world of emotions. This hypothesis is illustrated in a clinical presentation, consisting of the case of a 74-year old woman who was admitted to a psychiatric emergency department (ED) after a failed SA. Having suffered an ischemic stroke two years earlier, she suffered from incomplete Broca’s aphasia and dysprosody. She also presented with generalized anxiety and depressive symptoms. We observed that her language impairments were both aggravated by the exacerbations of her anxiety and depressive symptoms. In this patient, who had deficits on the motor side, these exacerbations were triggered by her inability to express herself, her emotional status, and suffering. SI was fluctuant, and—one year after the SA—she completed suicide. Further studies are needed to ascertain possible reciprocal and interacting associations between language impairments, psychiatric comorbidities, and SI/SB. They could enable clinicians to better understand their patient’s specific suffering, as brought on by language impairment, and contribute to the refining of suicide risk detection in this sub-group of affected patients.
