Clinical spectrum of neurological herpes simplex infection

All cases of neurological infections virologically verified as due to herpes simplex virus (HSV) during a 2-year period in the Helsinki University Hospital area were studied. Altogether 10 cases were divided clinically into two forms: encephalitis 5 cases, polyradiculomyelitis, meningitis and miscellaneous 5 cases. All the cases of encephalitis were treated with acyclovir. None of the severe cases of herpes radiculomyelitis received this drug, because of lack of a rapid virological diagnosis. Besides encephalitis HSV was associated with other types of severe diseases and those need attention for proper therapy.

Severe ocular side effects of perhexilene maleate: case report

We report a case of perhexilene maleate (PEXID) toxicity in which the presenting feature was loss of vision secondary to chronic papilloedema. Vortex keratopathy similar to that seen in amiodarone keratopathy was present, and corneal and conjunctival biopsy findings are presented. To our knowledge this is the first case report of a keratopathy occurring in perhexilene toxicity. After withdrawal of the drug the papilloedema and keratopathy subsided, but some visual deficit remains. The properties of perhexilene maleate and other amphiphilic drugs are described, and the possible aetiology of vortex keratopathy is discussed.

Herpes simplex virus-an obstetric hospital problem

The incidence of morbidity from herpes simplex virus among nurses of an obstetric teaching hospital is reported. The absence of local epidemiological data regarding this important infection is noted in an analysis of the influence on rostering and sick leave of the nurses.
