Clearing the Path: Exploring Apoptotic Cell Clearance in Inflammatory and Autoimmune Disorders for Therapeutic Advancements

Inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, characterized by dysregulated immune responses leading to tissue damage and chronic inflammation, present significant health challenges. This review uniquely focuses on efferocytosis-the phagocyte-mediated clearance of apoptotic cells-and its pivotal role in these disorders. We delve into the intricate mechanisms of efferocytosis' four stages and their implications in disease pathogenesis, distinguishing our study from previous literature. Our findings highlight impaired efferocytosis in conditions like atherosclerosis and asthma, proposing its targeting as a novel therapeutic strategy. We discuss the therapeutic potential of efferocytosis in modulating immune responses and resolving inflammation, offering a new perspective in treating inflammatory disorders.

A 6-year review of acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis at a public children's hospital in Cape Town, South Africa

BACKGROUND

Acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) is the most common cause of acute nephritis in children globally and, in some cases, may be associated with progressive kidney injury and failure, cumulating in the need for long-term dialysis and/or kidney transplantation.

METHODS

Our retrospective study describes the occurrence of APSGN among children (< 14 years) admitted to a tertiary children's hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, from January 2015 to December 2020.

RESULTS

Of 161 children who presented with acute nephritis (haematuria, oedema, oliguria, and hypertension), 100 met the inclusion criteria. Demographic, clinical features, laboratory findings, management, and outcome data were collected. APSGN was defined by the clinical presentation of at least two clinical signs of acute nephritis, and low serum complement 3 (C3) level or evidence of a recent streptococcal infection. Most cases of APSGN were associated with streptococcal skin infections: 55/100 (55%); 10/100 (10%) children presented with hypertensive seizures; C3 levels were low in 86/92 (93.5%) children; 94/94 (100%) children had elevated anti-deoxyribonuclease-B (anti-DNase-B) levels; and 80/94 (85%) also had elevated anti-streptolysin O titre (ASOT) at presentation. Eleven (11%) children had a percutaneous kidney biopsy; 4/11 (36%) showed histological features of post-infectious nephritis, and 7/11(64%) also had crescentic glomerulonephritis with immune complex deposits. Sixty-two (62%) children confirmed recovered, and five (5%) progressed to kidney failure, but 29 presumed recovered as they did not return for follow-up to our institution.

CONCLUSIONS

Childhood APSGN remains an important health problem in South Africa (SA) with favourable outcomes in most, apart from those with crescentic glomerulonephritis who progressed to kidney failure.

Higher incidence of hematuria was observed in female children with microtia

The goals of this study were to investigate the incidence and characteristics of hematuria in patients with microtia, and to clarify that more attention should be paid to renal dysfunction in patients with microtia. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of a total 9447 children diagnosed with microtia (selected as study group, 7037 children) or pigmented nevus (selected as control group, 2410 children) at the Plastic Surgery Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College from January 2009 to June 2021. All of the routine urinalysis report of these children were reviewed to assess the incidence and characteristics of hematuria in each group. No statistically significant differences were observed when analyzing the overall incidence of hematuria between the study and control groups (P > 0.05). However, after grouping by sex, the incidence of hematuria in female children with microtia was significantly higher than that in femalecontrol group and no similar results were observed in the male patients. In addition, after further grouping by age in case group, the incidence of hematuria in girls of all ages with microtia was significantly higher than that in males with microtia (age 0-10:males: Girls = 1.89%:4.14%; age 0-5: males: Girls = 1.22%:3.73%; age 6-10: males:Girls = 1.97%:4.14%,P < 0.05), while no similar results were obtained in the control group.(age 0-10:males: Girls = 1.39%:2.22%; age 0-5: males: Girls = 1.07%:1.95%; age 6-10: males: Girls = 3.38%:3.17%, P > 0.05). Higher incidence of hematuria was observed in female children with microtia.

The Human Virome and Its Crosslink with Glomerulonephritis and IgA Nephropathy

The prokaryotic, viral, fungal, and parasitic microbiome exists in a highly intricate connection with the human host. In addition to eukaryotic viruses, due to the existence of various host bacteria, phages are widely spread throughout the human body. However, it is now evident that some viral community states, as opposed to others, are indicative of health and might be linked to undesirable outcomes for the human host. Members of the virome may collaborate with the human host to retain mutualistic functions in preserving human health. Evolutionary theories contend that a particular microbe's ubiquitous existence may signify a successful partnership with the host. In this Review, we present a survey of the field's work on the human virome and highlight the role of viruses in health and disease and the relationship of the virobiota with immune system control. Moreover, we will analyze virus involvement in glomerulonephritis and in IgA nephropathy, theorizing the molecular mechanisms that may be responsible for the crosslink with these renal diseases.

NMR-Based Metabolomics in Differential Diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Subtypes

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is considered as a major public health problem as it can lead to end-stage kidney failure, which requires replacement therapy. A prompt and accurate diagnosis, along with the appropriate treatment, can delay CKD’s progression, significantly. Herein, we sought to determine whether CKD etiology can be reflected in urine metabolomics during its early stage. This is achieved through the analysis of the urine metabolic fingerprint from 108 CKD patients by means of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy metabolomic analysis. We report the first NMR—metabolomics data regarding the three most common etiologies of CKD: Chronic Glomerulonephritis (IgA and Membranous Nephropathy), Diabetic Nephropathy (DN) and Hypertensive Nephrosclerosis (HN). Analysis aided a moderate glomerulonephritis clustering, providing characterization of the metabolic fluctuations between the CKD subtypes and control disease. The urine metabolome of IgA Nephropathy reveals a specific metabolism, reflecting its different etiology or origin and is useful for determining the origin of the disease. In contrast, urine metabolomes from DN and HN patients did not reveal any indicative metabolic pattern, which is consistent with their fused clinical phenotype. These findings may contribute to improving diagnostics and prognostic approaches for CKD, as well as improving our understanding of its pathology.

Crescentic Glomerulonephritis: Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Potential of Human Amniotic Stem Cells

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) leads to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Glomerulonephritis (GN) is the second leading cause of CKD resulting in end stage renal failure. The most severe and rapidly progressive type of GN is characterized by glomerular crescent formation. The current therapies for crescentic GN, which consist of broad immunosuppressive drugs, are partially effective, non-specific, toxic and cause many serious side effects including infections, cancer, and cardiovascular problems. Therefore, new and safer therapies are needed. Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) are a type of stem cell which are isolated from the placenta after birth. They represent an attractive and novel therapeutic option for the treatment of various inflammatory conditions owing to their unique and selective immunosuppressive ability, as well as their excellent safety profile and clinical applicability. In this review, we will discuss the immunopathogenesis of crescentic GN, issues with currently available treatments and how hAECs offer potential to become a new and harmless treatment option for this condition.

Nomenclature and diagnostic criteria for acute kidney injury - 2020 consensus of the Taiwan AKI-task force

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common syndrome that has a significant impact on prognosis in various clinical settings. To evaluate whether new evidence supports changing the current definition/classification/staging systems for AKI suggested by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) 2012 Clinical Practice Guideline, the Taiwan AKI-TASK Force, composed of 64 experts in various disciplines, systematically reviewed the literature and proposed recommendations about the current nomenclature and diagnostic criteria for AKI. The Taiwan Acute Kidney Injury (TW-AKI) Consensus 2020 was established following the principles of evidence-based medicine to investigate topics covered in AKI guidelines. The Taiwan AKI-TASK Force determined that patients with AKI have a higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, and death. After a comprehensive review, the TASK Force recommended using novel biomarkers, imaging examinations, renal biopsy, and body fluid assessment in the diagnosis of AKI. Clinical issues with regards to the definitions of baseline serum creatinine (sCr) level and renal recovery, as well as the use of biomarkers to predict renal recovery are also discussed in this consensus. Although the present classification systems using sCr and urine output for the diagnosis of AKI are not perfect, there is not enough evidence to change the current criteria in clinical practice. Future research should investigate and clarify the roles of the aforementioned tools in clinical practice for AKI.

PD-1 immunobiology in glomerulonephritis and renal cell carcinoma

BACKGROUND

Programmed cell death protein (PD)-1 receptors and ligands on immune cells and kidney parenchymal cells help maintain immunological homeostasis in the kidney. Dysregulated PD-1:PD-L1 binding interactions occur during the pathogenesis of glomerulopathies and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The regulation of these molecules in the kidney is important to PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapies that treat RCC and may induce glomerulopathies as an adverse event.

METHODS

The expression and function of PD-1 molecules on immune and kidney parenchymal cells were reviewed in the healthy kidney, PD-1 immunotherapy-induced nephrotoxicity, glomerulopathies and RCC.

RESULTS

PD-1 and/or its ligands are expressed on kidney macrophages, dendritic cells, lymphocytes, and renal proximal tubule epithelial cells. Vitamin D3, glutathione and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) regulate hypoxic cell signals involved in the expression and function of PD-1 molecules. These pathways are altered in kidney disease and are linked to the production of vascular endothelial growth factor, erythropoietin, adiponectin, interleukin (IL)-18, IL-23, and chemokines that bind CXCR3, CXCR4, and/or CXCR7. These factors are differentially produced in glomerulonephritis and RCC and may be important biomarkers in patients that receive PD-1 therapies and/or develop glomerulonephritis as an adverse event CONCLUSION: By comparing the functions of the PD-1 axis in glomerulopathies and RCC, we identified similar chemokines involved in the recruitment of immune cells and distinct mediators in T cell differentiation. The expression and function of PD-1 and PD-1 ligands in diseased tissue and particularly on double-negative T cells and parenchymal kidney cells needs continued exploration. The possible regulation of the PD-1 axis by vitamin D3, glutathione and/or AMPK cell signals may be important to kidney disease and the PD-1 immunotherapeutic response.

Postinfectious Glomerulonephritis

Postinfectious glomerulonephritis continues to be the most common cause of acute glomerulonephritis in children. Although in the past it was considered to be mainly a complication of streptococcal infections, today it is well known that infection with many other pathogens may trigger an immune response that results in glomerular injury. Most children with postinfectious glomerulonephritis have an excellent prognosis with complete recovery of renal function and no recurrence. Spirogyra neglecta Aqueous Extract Attenuates LPS-Induced Renal Inflammation

Spirogyra neglecta (SN), commonly named "Tao" in Thai, is a genus of filamentous green macroalgae. SN contains polyphenols such as isoquercetin, catechin, hydroquinone and kaempferol. These constituents exhibit beneficial effects including anti-oxidant, anti-gastric ulcer, anti-hyperglycaemia and anti-hyperlipidaemia in both in vitro and in vivo models. Whether SN extract (SNE) has an anti-inflammatory effect in vivo remains unclear. This study examined the effect of SNE on renal function and renal organic transport in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced renal inflammation in rats. Rats were randomised and divided into normal saline (NS), NS supplemented with 1000 mg/kg body weight (BW) of SNE (NS + SNE), intraperitoneally injected with 12 mg/kg BW of LPS and LPS treated with 1000 mg/kg BW of SNE (LPS + SNE). Biochemical parameters in serum and urine, lipid peroxidation concentration, kidney function and renal organic anion and cation transports were determined. LPS-injected rats developed renal injury and inflammation by increasing urine microalbumin, total malondialdehyde (MDA) and inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-1β protein expression, respectively. In addition, uptake of renal organic anion, [³H]-oestrone sulphate (ES), was reduced in LPS-injected rats together with increased expression of organic anion transporter 3 (Oat3). However, the renal injury and inflammation, as well as impaired Oat3 function and protein expression, were restored in LPS + SNE rats. Accordingly, SNE could be developed as nutraceutical product to prevent inflammation-induced nephrotoxicity.

Aetiology of chronic kidney disease and risk factors for disease progression in Chinese subjects: A single-centre retrospective study in Beijing

Aim

To assess the aetiological factors of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and factors associated with disease progression.

Methods

Single‐centre retrospective study evaluating thorough electronic medical records of patients diagnosed with CKD at Peking University People's Hospital (April 2010‐April 2015). The objectives were to identify the aetiological factors of CKD in Chinese patients and risk factors associated with CKD progression.

Results

Of 15 425 CKD patients, 12 380 had aetiology recorded. The leading aetiologies associated with CKD were chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN; 36.8%), hypertensive nephropathy (HTN; 28.5%) and diabetic nephropathy (DN; 27.1%). CGN was most common in patients with early stage disease (stages 1‐2); DN and HTN were common in advanced‐stages (stages 3‐4). In a longitudinal subcohort of 2923 patients with ≥6‐month follow‐up, 19.6% experienced CKD progression. Patients with CKD progression were significantly older in age and had a greater number of comorbidities and laboratory anomalies, and were more likely to have DN (40.5%) and CGN (40.5%) than HTN (5.5%) at baseline than patients without progression. In a multivariate analysis, factors associated with disease progression included macro‐ and micro‐albuminuria, anaemia, hyperkalaemia, hyperphosphataemia, metabolic acidosis, CKD stage 4 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Conclusion

This study identified CGN, DN and HTN as the leading aetiological factors for CKD in Chinese patients. DN was a strong predictor of faster disease progression, with albuminuria (a complication of T2DM) associated with highest risk for disease progression.

This study identified diabetic nephropathy was a strong predictor of faster disease progression, and confirmed albuminuria to be associated with highest risk for disease progression.

Epidemiology and clinical outcomes of acute glomerulonephritis in a teaching hospital in North India

Context:

Acute glomerulonephritis (AGN) is a major cause of morbidity in developing countries like India. AGN includes both infectious and non infectious causes leading to immunological insult to the kidney.

Aims:

This study is an attempt to evaluate the clinical characteristics, complications and outcome of acute glomerulonephritis.

Settings and Design:

This hospital based descriptive study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in North India. Materials and Methods: 50 children with AGN were recruited and analyzed over a period of one year. Detailed clinical examination and relevant laboratory investigations were done. Children were followed up for 6 months.

Statistical Analysis Used:

Data analysis was done using SPSS software and the results obtained are shown in the form of frequencies along with percentages.

Results:

50 patients were enrolled in the study with male to female ratio of 1.72:1. Pharyngitis was the most common predisposing condition (70.2%). 22(40.4%) of patients had developed complications. Of this acute kidney injury with significant pulmonary edema was seen in 16 patients and 6 patients had encephalopathy with seizures. Two patients had to be managed with hemodialysis. 42 patients had positive CRP (>10) and ASO titres were >200 Todd units in all patients. At 6 months’ majority of patients had complete clinical recovery with microscopic hematuria present only in 8 patients, persistent hypertension in 2 patients, 8 patients had proteinuria. These patients are being still followed up.

Conclusions:

Complications and morbidity is significantly high during the acute phase in AGN. Non infectious causes should also be kept in mind. This study highlights the complications requiring intensive care and need for long term follow up.

Infection-Related Glomerular Disease

Glomerular disease results from a complex process. It can occur following acute illnesses or chronic diseases from other organs and body parts that promote bacterial invasion. Assessment and initial identification of the cause of this process is important in order to initiate interventions that promote a return to wellness. Prudent clinician judgment is necessary in client management in order to reduce the potential for long-standing renal disease. Medicinal intervention should be combined with patient education in addressing infection-related glomerular disease.

Lupus nephritis with preserved kidney function associated with poorer cardiovascular risk control: A call for more awareness

BACKGROUND

Despite the improvement in the prognosis of lupus nephritis (LN), the cardiovascular morbimortality remains high. The early recognition and remission of flares, while trying to avoid the metabolic adverse effects of medication, must be mandatory.

AIM

The aim of our study was to assess the cardiovascular (CV) risk profile in a cohort of lupus patients with preserved kidney function after a nephritis episode, compared to patients without a nephritis flare.

METHODS

130 patients diagnosed of SLE (32 with previous nephritis flare and 98 without) were studied in order to evaluate the CV risk profile, despite the preserved kidney function.

RESULTS

The most prevalent risk factors were sedentary lifestyle (57.6%), overweight/obesity (38.3%) and dyslipidemia (36%), followed by smoking (32%) and hypertension (16%). Though more than a half (53.1%) was taking CV medication, a high percentage did not reach a therapeutic target value, especially regarding obesity (11.5%) and cholesterol levels (LDL-C of 16%). The prevalence of dyslipidemia (53.1% vs 30.6%), smoking (46.6% vs 27.5%), left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) (21.4% vs 6.4%) and lower HDL-C (48.6mg/dL vs 55.4mg/dL) were significantly different in the group with previous nephritis flare. Moreover, young patients with lupus nephritis, received more pulses of corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide, had higher prevalence of hypertension, LVH, higher proteinuria, hospital admissions and waist circumference, constituting the subgroup of patients with greater aggregation of CV risk factors.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with previous nephritis flare showed a poor control of CV risk factors despite the preserved renal function, these patients would require a closer therapeutic management.

Edema in Renal Diseases – Current View on Pathogenesis

Edema is a common complication of numerous renal disease. In the recent past several aspects of the pathophysiology of this condition have been elucidated. We herein present a case of nephrotic syndrome in a 30 year-old men. The discussion revolves around the following key questions on fluid accumulation in renal disease: 1. What is edema? What diseases can cause edema? 2. What are the mechanisms of edema in nephrotic syndrome? 2a. The “underfill” theory 2b. The “overfill” theory 2c. Tubulointerstitial inflammation 2d. Pauci-immune glomerulonephritis in a captive chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), and a review of spontaneous cases in animals

BACKGROUND

Crescentic glomeruli are the hallmark finding in rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) and are characterized by disruption and proliferation of the glomerular capsule and an influx of cells into Bowman's space. Pauci-immune-type RPGN is identified by a lack of immunoglobulins and immune complexes in the glomerular basement membrane.

METHODS

Complete necropsy and histology were performed on the affected chimpanzee. Electron microscopy was performed on kidney sections. A search of the literature was performed to identify spontaneous RPGN in animals.

RESULTS

We report a case of crescentic glomerulonephritis of the pauci-immune-type in a hepatitis C virus-infected 28-year-old male chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who was humanely euthanized for a cardiac-related decline in health.

CONCLUSION

To our knowledge, this is the first report describing pauci-immune crescentic glomerulonephritis in a non-human primate.

Soluble biglycan as a biomarker of inflammatory renal diseases

Chronic renal inflammation is often associated with a progressive accumulation of various extracellular matrix constituents, including several members of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan (SLRP) gene family. It is becoming increasingly evident that the matrix-unbound SLRPs strongly regulate the progression of inflammation and fibrosis. Soluble SLRPs are generated either via partial proteolytic processing of collagenous matrices or by de novo synthesis evoked by stress or injury. Liberated SLRPs can then bind to and activate Toll-like receptors, thus modulating downstream inflammatory signaling. Preclinical animal models and human studies have recently identified soluble biglycan as a key initiator and regulator of various inflammatory renal diseases. Biglycan, generated by activated macrophages, can enter the circulation and its elevated levels in plasma and renal parenchyma correlate with unfavorable renal function and outcome. In this review, we will focus on the critical role of soluble biglycan in inflammatory signaling in various renal disorders. Moreover, we will provide new data implicating proinflammatory effects of soluble decorin in unilateral ureteral obstruction. Finally, we will critically evaluate the potential application of soluble biglycan vis-à-vis other SLRPs (decorin, lumican and fibromodulin) as a promising target and novel biomarker of inflammatory renal diseases.

Therapeutic Approach by a Novel Designed Anti-Inflammatory Drug, M2000, in Experimental Immune Complex Glomerulonephritis

The therapeutic efficacy of novel designed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, M2000 (beta- D- mannuronic acid) on experimental immune complex glomerulonephritis was evaluated. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) nephritis was induced in rats by a subcutaneous immunization and daily intravenous administration of BSA. M2000 solution (30 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally at regular 48-hr intervals for 4 weeks. Onset of treatment was day 56. Urinary protein was measured weekly and serum anti-BSA antibody was assessed by ELISA method at different intervals. Animals were killed on day 84 and blood samples and kidney specimens were obtained. Serum (creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, cholesterol, and triglyceride) and urine (protein, urea, and creatinine) determinants were measured at the time of sacrifice. Kidney specimens were processed for light and immunofluorescent microscopic examination. The fibrosarcoma cell line was used for assaying tolerability and matrix metalloproteinase type 2 (MMP-2) activity. MMP-2 activity was assessed using zymography. Our data showed that M2000 therapy could significantly reduce the urinary protein excretion in treated rats versus non-treated controls. Anti-BSA antibody titer was lower in treated rats than in controls at the 12th experimental week. Polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes infiltration and glomerular immune complex deposition were less intense in treated rats than in controls. Cytotoxicity analysis of M2000 showed a much higher tolerability compared with other tested drugs (diclofenac, piroxicam and dexamethasone). The inhibitory effect of M2000 in MMP-2 activity was significantly greater than that of dexsamethasone and of piroxicam at a concentration of 200 microg/ml. Moreover, the toxicological study revealed that M2000 had no influence on serum (BUN, creatinine, triglyceride and cholesterol) determinants, urinary protein excretion and glomerular histology in healthy group receiving drug.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that treatment with M2000 can reduce proteinuria, diminish antibody production, and suppress the progression of disease in a rat model of immune complex glomerulonephritis.

Production of M2000 (β-d-mannuronic acid) and its therapeutic effect on experimental nephritis

The present research introduces the method of Production of M2000 (β-d-mannuronic acid) and its therapeutic effect on experimental model of nephritis. M2000 was produced using enzymatic and chemical procedure on prepared alginate from Pseudomonas fluorescens. The experimental glomerulonephritis was induced in rats by a subcutaneous immunization and daily intravenous administration of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Moreover, the toxicological study revealed that M2000 had no influence on serum (BUN, creatinine, triglyceride and cholesterol) determinants, urinary protein excretion and glomerular histology in healthy group receiving drug.

CONCLUSIONS

In this research, for the first time we introduced the procedure of production of M2000 (β-d-mannuronic acid) and our data suggest that treatment with M2000, as a novel anti-inflammatory drug can reduce proteinuria, diminish antibody production and suppress the progression of disease in experimental model of glomerulonephritis.

The Potential Role of HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors in Pediatric Nephrotic Syndrome

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) as a potential treatment option for the dyslipidemia associated with childhood nephrotic syndrome.

DATA SOURCES

Searches of MEDLINE (1966–April 2004), Cochrane Library, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (1977–April 2004), and an extensive manual review of journals were performed using the key search terms nephrotic syndrome, familial hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor.

STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION

Two prospective uncontrolled studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of statin therapy in pediatric nephrotic syndrome were included.

DATA SYNTHESIS

While an extensive amount of data is available in adult nephrotic syndrome in which statin therapy decreases total plasma cholesterol 22–39%, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) 27–47%, and total plasma triglycerides 13–38%, only 2 small uncontrolled studies have been conducted evaluating the utility of these agents in pediatric nephrotic syndrome. These studies indicate that statins are capable of safely reducing total cholesterol up to 42%, LDL-C up to 46%, and triglyceride levels up to 44%.

CONCLUSIONS

Lowering cholesterol levels during childhood may reduce the risk for atherosclerotic changes and may thus be of benefit in certain patients with nephrotic syndrome. Statins have demonstrated short-term safety and efficacy in the pediatric nephrotic syndrome population. Implementing pharmacologic therapy with statins in children with nephrotic syndrome must be done with care until controlled studies are conducted in this population.
