Abstract
An economic simulation was carried out over 183 milk-producing countries to estimate the global economic impacts of 12 dairy cattle diseases and health conditions: mastitis (subclinical and clinical), lameness, paratuberculosis (Johne's disease), displaced abomasum, dystocia, metritis, milk fever, ovarian cysts, retained placenta, and ketosis (subclinical and clinical). Estimates of disease impacts on milk yield, fertility, and culling were collected from the literature, standardized, meta-analyzed using a variety of methods ranging from simple averaging to random-effects models, and adjusted for comorbidities to prevent overestimation. These comorbidity-adjusted disease impacts were then combined with a set of country-level estimates for lactational incidence or prevalence or both, herd characteristics, and price estimates within a series of Monte Carlo simulations that estimated and valued the economic losses due to these diseases. It was estimated that total annual global losses are US$65 billion (B). Subclinical ketosis, clinical mastitis, and subclinical mastitis were the costliest diseases modeled, resulting in mean annual global losses of approximately US$18B, US$13B, and US$9B, respectively. Estimated global annual losses due to clinical ketosis, displaced abomasum, dystocia, lameness, metritis, milk fever, ovarian cysts, paratuberculosis, and retained placenta were estimated to be US$0.2B, US$0.6B, US$0.6B, US$6B, US$5B, US$0.6B, US$4B, US$4B, and US$3B, respectively. Without adjustment for comorbidities, when statistical associations between diseases were disregarded, mean aggregate global losses would have been overestimated by 45%. Although annual losses were greatest in India (US$12B), the United States (US$8B), and China (US$5B), depending on the measure of losses used (losses as a percentage of gross domestic product, losses per capita, losses as a percentage of gross milk revenue), the relative economic burden of these dairy cattle diseases across countries varied markedly.

Abstract
The present study aimed to monitor the practices of European veterinarians for the diagnosis and treatment of retained fetal membranes in cattle. A questionnaire was established and distributed to veterinarians from five European countries. A total of 700 veterinarians participated in the survey. A vaginal examination, general examination and uterine palpation are carried out by 71%, 38% and 23% of veterinarians, respectively. Moreover, half of the veterinarians attempt to remove the placenta manually, 70% of them administer a combined local and general treatment if the cow has a fever (more than 39.5 °C), and 50% of them only administer IU treatment if no fever is observed. Tetracyclins, cefapirin and penicillins are the most used intrauterine (IU) antibiotics, whereas penicillin is the most used parenteral one. All other European veterinarians were less likely to use cefapirin and more likely to use oxytocin, Ca perfusion and NSAID than French and Walloon veterinarians. In conclusion, our study confirms the necessity of improving and rationalizing the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of the RFM, mainly to reduce the important problem of antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
Butyrate promotes rumen epithelium growth and function; however, the effect of prepartum butyrate supplementation on dairy cow productivity, health and their offspring has not been extensively studied. Furthermore, no studies have investigated the effect of magnesium butyrate (MgB), which is also a source of magnesium. A trial was performed to test the hypothesis that prepartum MgB supplementation (105 g/cow/day) would increase colostrum quality and improve calving, newborn calf vitality and cow health. Multiparous Holstein cows were randomly assigned to MgB supplemented (n = 107) and Control groups (n = 112). Colostrum yield and the total yield of IgG, protein and lactose were higher (p ≤ 0.05) in the supplemented group. The calving assistance rate was lower (p ≤ 0.012), and the neonatal vitality score was higher (p ≤ 0.001) in the MgB group. Improved parameters related to cow health and fertility were observed in the supplemented group. The MgB group also had higher milk yield during the first week of lactation (p ≤ 0.001), and a higher (p ≤ 0.05) body condition score from 3 to 9 weeks after calving. In conclusion, prepartum MgB supplementation provides a wide range of benefits for dairy cows, as well as their newborn calves.

Abstract
Simple Summary Pregnancy loss following a positive pregnancy diagnosis in the absence of infectious disease of the reproductive system is a main factor limiting reproductive efficiency in high producing dairy cows. We describe here some circumstances such as the age of the dam, retained placenta and uterine size in which the uterus may be associated with pregnancy loss. Abstract Here we revise circumstances of non-infectious causes in which the uterus may be associated with pregnancy loss during the late embryo/early fetal period (following a positive pregnancy diagnosis in lactating dairy cows). As the uterine size increases with parity and pregnant heifers with no detrimental effects of a previous parturition, a primigravid uterus is proposed as a reference for identifying risk factors that negatively influence pregnancy in lactating cows. Cows suffering placenta retention or with a large uterus at insemination were selected as topics for this revision. Retained placenta, that occurs around parturition, has a long-lasting influence on subsequent pregnancy loss. Although retained placenta is a particularly predisposing factor for uterine infection, farm conditions along with cow factors of non-infectious cause and their interactions have been identified as main factors favoring this disorder. A large uterus (cervix and uterine horns lying outside the pelvic cavity) with no detectable abnormalities has been associated with low fertility and with a greater incidence of pregnancy loss. A large reproductive tract may well derive from an inadequate uterine involution. Therefore, peripartum management and strategies to reduce the incidence of uterine disorders should reduce their associated financial losses in the herds.

Abstract
Although hormonal induction of parturition in cattle results in the successful delivery of healthy calves, the risk of retained fetal membrane is significantly increased. In a previous study, a combination of the long-acting glucocorticoid, triamcinolone acetonide, with a high dose of betamethasone partially normalized the placentomal gene expression during parturition; however, the incidence of retained fetal membrane remained high. This study further explored placentomal dysfunction and aimed to elucidate the mechanism of retained fetal membrane in parturition-induced cows. In this study, transcriptome analysis revealed that enhanced glucocorticoid exposure normalized the expression of a substantial fraction of genes in the cotyledons. In contrast, a significant reduction in the multiple signaling pathway activities, including interferon signaling, was found in the caruncles during induced parturition. Real-time PCR showed that the expression of interferon-tau in the caruncles, but not interferon-alpha or interferon-gamma, was significantly lower in induced parturition than spontaneous parturition. Interferon-stimulated gene expression was also significantly decreased in the caruncles during induced parturition. These results indicate that interferon signaling could be important for immunological control in placentomes during parturition. Additionally, this suggests that interferon-tau might be a pivotal ligand for interferon receptors in the caruncles. This study revealed that peripheral blood leukocytes in prepartum cows transcribed interferon-tau. Macrophage infiltration in the placentome is known to participate in the detachment of the fetal membrane from the caruncle. Thus, this study raised the possibility that immune cells migrating into the caruncles at parturition may act as a source of ligands that activate interferon signaling.

Abstract
The current study aimed to assess the ovarian and uterine haemodynamics in postpartum (pp) Egyptian buffaloes and their relation to steroid hormonal levels (progesterone and estrogen). Six multiparous buffalos with normal calving were examined by using trans-rectal Doppler sonography to assess the blood flow in ipsilateral and contralateral ovarian and uterine arteries. Doppler parameters viz. peak systolic velocity (PSV), blood flow volume (BFV), resistance (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were measured at 1st till 6th postpartum weeks. In addition, diameters (mm) of the ovarian and uterine arteries and the vascularisation area (mm2) of ovary were determined. The blood samples were collected starting from 1st week post calving and every week thereafter following each ultrasound Doppler examination for assay of progesterone and estradiol. Results indicated that PI and RI increased consistently and significantly (P<0.05) till the 6th week post calving as compared to those recorded at 1st week in ipsilateral ovarian and uterine arteries. However, the blood flow volume and peak systolic velocity in both ovarian and uterine arteries decreased gradually from 1st week till the 6th week after calving. There were very strong positive correlations between PSV and BFV, in both ipsilateral and contralateral ovarian and uterine arteries. Blood concentrations of progesterone were lower (P<0.05) during the first four weeks than those recorded at 5th and 6th postpartum weeks. This trend was reversed for blood estradiol 17-β. The results of the present investigation concluded that Doppler ultrasonography is a suitable tool for assessing changes in ovarian and uterine perfusion during the puerperium.

Meloxicam administration in the management of postoperative pain and inflammation associated with caesarean section in beef heifers: Evaluation of reproductive parameters. Abstract
Post-operative pain and inflammation are normal physiological reactions to caesarean section. Their management in cattle have rarely been investigated. This surgical procedure negatively affects reproductive function with, for example, a reduction in fertility resulting in an increase in calving interval. In this multicenter clinical trial, the objective was to evaluate the impact on reproductive performance of meloxicam injected before caesarean section to manage post-operative pain and inflammation. Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. One hundred and twenty-seven Charolais heifers (n = 127) were recruited from 47 farms in six French veterinary practices in the Burgundy region. The heifers underwent a non-elective standardized caesarean section operation. Heifers were randomly assigned to one of two groups: meloxicam (n = 66), intravenous meloxicam injection before surgery, or control (n = 61). Reproductive performance and health information were recorded from the time of the caesarean section to the next calving or to culling. In our study, meloxicam administration before caesarean section had no effect on the incidence of retained placenta (18.2% of treated vs 25.0% of control cows, p = 0.35). The pregnancy rate was higher in treated than in control cows (83.1% vs 67.8%, p = 0.04 after multivariate analysis) and a survival analysis showed that the median calving interval was 35 days shorter in the meloxicam (t50% = 417 days) compared to the control group (t50% = 452 days, p = 0.05). A trend was also observed for culling rate to be lower in treated (4.7%) compared to control cows (13.3%, p = 0.09). In conclusion, this study suggests that there is a beneficial effect of meloxicam administration before caesarean section on reproductive performance in Charolais heifers.

Abstract
Retained placenta (RP) is as an important reproductive disorder which adversely affects the economic performance of dairy cows. Understanding the consequences and economic losses associated with RP can persuade dairy farmers to consider it more effectively in their management decisions. Hence, the aims of this research were to assess the effect of RP on production and reproduction attributes as well as economic losses in Iranian Holstein cows. The data was collected from nine Holstein dairy herds in Isfahan province of Iran. The final dataset comprised of 139,508 records of 58,086 cows which calved between March 2011 and December 2018. A linear mixed model was developed to evaluate the effect of RP on individual performance of primiparous and multiparous cows. The economic losses associated with the RP were finally estimated. The average incidence of RP per cow over a year was 12.3% (ranged between 9.0 and 15.4%). Each incidence of RP significantly reduced milk, fat and protein yields in primiparous and multiparous cows (P < 0.05). The adverse effect of RP on the milk production was much higher in the cows at the early phase of lactation (i.e. 100-d lactation group) than the cows in mid or late lactation. The estimated production losses (±standard deviation) due to the RP event were 282.1 ± 43.0 and 295.7 ± 40.8 kg per cow for a 305-d lactation period in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. However, the fertility performance was less affected by the RP in primiparous compared to multiparous cows. The average of days open increased by 8.3 ± 5.3 and 19.8 ± 7.1 d in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. The financial losses associated with RP were on average US$ 350.4 and US$ 481.2 per incidence in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively, ranged from US$ 311.9 to 456.2 depending on the parity number (primi- or multiparous) and herd management. The highest financial losses due to RP were associated with reduction in milk production (38.5% of total loss) and low fertility (28.5% of total loss) had the highest contribution in in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. The results of our research highlight the economic importance of improved calving management to reduce RP occurrence in dairy cows.

Abstract
RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos das estações do parto e da inseminação, da retenção de placenta, da natimortalidade e da ordem de parto sobre o desempenho reprodutivo de vacas leiteiras. Utilizou-se a regressão logística, em que as variáveis dependentes foram concepção à primeira inseminação pós-parto e percentual de vacas prenhes no rebanho aos 100, 150 ou 200 DEL e as variáveis independentes foram a estação do parto e a estação da inseminação, a retenção de placenta, a natimortalidade e a ordem de parto. A estação do parto e a estação da inseminação influenciaram o desempenho reprodutivo, reduzindo a fertilidade das vacas nas estações quentes do ano. O atraso na primeira inseminação aumentou a concepção na primeira inseminação, mas reduziu o percentual de vacas prenhes ao longo da lactação. O desempenho reprodutivo da vaca leiteira foi afetado por vários fatores, relacionados à vaca, ao ambiente e ao manejo a ela imposto.

Abstract
Uterine diseases are some of the most prevalent and costly diseases for the dairy industry. It has been reported that an exacerbated and prolonged inflammatory response around calving can increase the risk of developing metritis, which subsequently can impair production and fertility in dairy cows. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of 2 oral administrations of acetylsalicylic acid 24 h apart on the incidence of uterine diseases [i.e., retained fetal membranes, clinical metritis, clinical endometritis) and reproductive performance [i.e., days in milk to conception, number of services to conception, proportion of cows pregnant at first service, proportion of abortion at first service (ABRT)] in dairy cows after calving. Cows from one dairy farm (n = 246) located in central Pennsylvania were included in this study. Animals were blocked by parity and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: (1) ASA (n = 121): within ~12 h after parturition, cows received 2 treatments with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA; 200 mg/kg, 4 boluses) 24 h apart; or (2) UNT (n = 125): cows remained untreated. Clinical metritis was assessed at 7 ± 3 and 14 ± 3 d in milk (DIM) using a Metricheck device (Simcro Tech Ltd., Hamilton, New Zealand). Cows that presented a fetid, red-brownish, watery vaginal discharge were classified as having clinical metritis. Clinical endometritis was assessed through ultrasonography and defined as presence of hyperechoic fluid (>3 mm) in the uterus lumen at 50 ± 10 DIM. The incidence of retained fetal membranes was defined as the failure of expulsion of the placenta within 24 h after calving and recorded by farm personnel. The data were analyzed using the MIXED and GLIMMIX procedures of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) as a randomized complete block design. A lower proportion of cows treated with acetylsalicylic acid developed clinical metritis at 7 ± 3 DIM (ASA = 34.97 ± 5.57%; UNT = 57.21 ± 5.80%) and tended to develop clinical endometritis at 50 ± 10 DIM (ASA = 3.84 ± 2.67%; UNT = 13.61 ± 5.23%) compared with cows that remained untreated. Cows treated with acetylsalicylic acid tended to require 18 d less to conceive compared with UNT cows (ASA = 125.63 ± 8.21 d; UNT = 143.44 ± 6.28 d). Furthermore, there was a tendency for a treatment × ABRT interaction, whereby ASA cows that aborted at first service tended to conceive 35 d sooner compared with UNT cows that aborted at first service (ASA = 151.42 ± 15.90 d; UNT = 186.38 ± 11.84 d). Although there was no difference in pregnancy per AI at first service between treatment groups (ASA = 23.88 ± 7.92%; UNT = 17.93 ± 6.31%), the proportion of cows aborting at first service in the ASA group tended to be lower than that in the UNT group (ASA = 1.03 ± 1.06%; UNT = 6.04 ± 2.62%). Results from this study suggest that a short-duration acetylsalicylic acid treatment after calving may decrease the incidence of uterine diseases and improve reproductive success in cows that aborted at first service in dairy cattle.

Abstract
Given the influence of retentio secundinarum (RS) on the reproductive
performance of cows, the current work aimed to assess the effect of various
approaches to the treatment of retained placenta on the main reproductive
parameters, primarily on the interval from parturition to the first service,
and the insemination index. The trial involved 120 dairy cows in which the
placenta was not expelled within 24 h postpartum. The first group (G1, n=60)
contained cows in which the retained placenta was not extirpated, but they
were administered antibiotics. The second group (G2, n=60) comprised cows in
which the placenta was removed manually, and were also administered
antibiotics. At the end of the study, 53 cows remained in G1 and 54 cows in
G2. According to medicament therapy, both groups were divided into three
sub-groups treated with: procaine benzylpenicillin, chlortetracycline
hydrochloride or ceftiofur. Comparison of the performance of G1 and G2 cows
showed significantly better fertility parameters occurred in the animals
from which the retained placenta was extracted manually. The pregnancy rate
in the G2 group was remarkably higher than in the G1 group. The average
service interval was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the G2 group compared
to the G1 group. The best results were obtained with the i.m. administration
of ceftiofur after the removal of the placenta.

Abstract
Retention of fetal membranes (RFM) in bovines not only lowers fertility and productivity but also leads to significant economic loss to the dairy farms. The present study compared peripartum progesterone, estradiol, cortisol, Prostaglandin F2 metabolite (PGFM) and relaxin concentrations in crossbred cows with normal parturition (NP) and with RFM. Blood samples were collected from 33 dairy cows at weekly interval from 30 days prepartum till 7th day before calving, followed by every alternate days till calving and 1st and 2nd day postpartum. Significantly higher plasma cortisol concentrations was observed between day 3 prepartum and day 2 postpartum in RFM cows (n=6) compared to NP cows (n=6). Plasma estradiol level was significantly lower in RFM group than in NP group on the day of calving while progesterone concentrations did not differ between the groups. In RFM cows, PGFM level was significantly lower on day 1 and day 2 postpartum compared to NP cows. On the day of calving and on day 1 postpartum, relaxin concentration was significantly (P<0.05) higher in NP cows compared to RFM cows. The ROC analysis, commonly used for development of diagnostic threshold value, revealed that cows with cortisol concentration above 7.35 ng/ml and PGFM concentration below 1,072 pg/ml on day-1 were associated with 5.99 times higher risk of RFM. It may be inferred that peripartum plasma cortisol and PGFM concentrations may be useful for identification of crossbred cows at the risk of developing RFM.

Abstract
Risk factors for retained placenta (RP), as a common and economically important disorder, have been widely investigated. However, comprehensive studies are rare. Therefore, this study sought to identify herd-cow factors and their interactions on the risk of RP in Iranian dairy herds. The data were collected from nine Holstein dairy herds in Isfahan province, Iran. The final dataset included 154,048 records for 59,610 cows which calved between March 2011 and December 2018. A logistic regression model was used to separately analyze the risk factors and their interactions for RP in primiparous and multiparous cows. The average rate of RP was 12.3% (9.0-15.4%) at the herd level. The highest rate of RP was recorded in spring compared with other seasons. Regardless of calving season, occurrence of dystocia, stillbirth and twinning increased the odds ratio (OR) of RP. In primiparous cows, occurrence of dystocia and stillbirth increased OR of RP 4.30 and 3.33 times, respectively. In multiparous cows, dystocia, twinning and stillbirth increased OR of RP 4.36, 3.94 and 1.29 times, respectively. Cows with an age at first calving of >28 months had the highest rate of RP compared with other cows. Multiparous and primiparous cows with a short (less than 271 d) and long (more than 281 d) pregnancy, respectively, had the highest risk of RP compared to cows in other groups. Furthermore, multiparous cows with an extended dry period length (more than 75 d) and produced milk yield more than 13,000 kg/lactation were at higher risk of RP with an average of 13.5%. With an interaction analysis, although the potential effect of each factors depends on the effect of other factors, but in general dystocia, stillbirth, an extended age at first calving (>28 months), and calving during the spring increased risk of RP for both groups. In conclusion, identification of risk factors for RP with an interaction analysis can help farm managers to employ the best strategies to reduce the occurrence of this reproductive disorder.

Abstract
Parturition is a natural process that gradually progresses from one stage to the next. However, around 5% of dairy cows will experience dystocia, which is considered to be a painful and stressful event. Studies have reported positive effects on cow performance and welfare after treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during the first postpartum days. The objectives were to assess the effects of acetylsalicylic acid administration after calving on (1) milk yield and components, (2) daily activity patterns, (3) reproductive performance, and (4) health in lactating dairy cows under certified organic management. Cows from 3 organic herds were enrolled. Within 12 h after parturition, cows were blocked by parity and calving ease and randomly assigned to 2 treatments: (1) aspirin (ASP; n = 278), in which cows received 4 consecutive treatments every 12 h with acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg/kg; 2 boluses) or (2) placebo (PLC, n = 285), in which cows received 4 treatments every 12 h with gelatin capsules (2 capsules) filled with water. Daily milk yield for the first 30 d in milk (DIM) and monthly milk yield, fat, protein, and somatic cell count (SCC) data from the first 5 Dairy Herd Improvement Association tests were collected. Activity patterns were measured using activity data loggers in the first 7 DIM. Clinical disease events (60 DIM) and fertility data were collected from on-farm computer records. Statistical analysis was performed using the MIXED (milk yield, components, and activity), LIFETEST (fertility), and GLIMMIX (health) procedures of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). Overall, ASP cows produced 1.82 kg/d more milk than PLC cows during the first 30 DIM. Interestingly, cows that experienced dystocia and received ASP produced 4.48 kg/d more milk compared with cows in the PLC group that experienced dystocia. Cows treated with ASP had lower somatic cell count during the first 5 Dairy Herd Improvement Association tests. There were no differences in daily lying time, lying bouts, and lying bout duration between the ASP and PLC groups. However, cows in the ASP group had 587,64 steps/d more compared with PLC cows. In addition, ASP cows tended to require fewer days (ASP = 113.76 ± 4.99 d; PLC = 125.36 ± 4.74 d) and needed fewer services (ASP = 1.86 ± 0.21 services; PLC = 2.19 ± 0.24 services) to become pregnant compared with PLC cows. There were no differences in clinical disease events between treatments. Results from this study suggest that treating cows with ASP after calving may help improve milk yields and udder health, increase activity, and enhance fertility in dairy cattle under certified organic management.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess how uterine disorders alter the lying behaviour and plasma biomarkers in dairy cows. 34 multiparous cows were retrospectively classified into three groups according to the first uterine disorder that cows were diagnosed with: retained placenta (RP), metritis (MET), or healthy (H; cows without any clinical disease). Lying time (LT) and duration of lying bouts (LB) were monitored between 6 weeks prior to and 8 weeks after calving via the AfiAct II pedometer. Blood samples were collected routinely between 14 days before and 28 days after calving. Data was analysed using Proc MIXED of SAS ver. 9.4. Regardless of grouping, both LT and LB were longer (P < 0.01) in the prepartum period (774 ± 16.6 min/day and 89.9 ± 2.1 min/bout) than in the first 28 days after calving (DFC; 653 ± 16.7 min/day and 63.7 ± 2.1 min/bout). Cows with RP had longer LT than healthy cows during the last 3 weeks before calving (837 ± 30.9 vs. 735 ± 27.1 min/day; P < 0.05). LT in cows with MET and healthy cows were not significantly different. The LB was similar among groups, averaging 76.1 ± 3.4 min/bout in healthy cows, 73.2 ± 3.8 min/bout in cows with RP, and 75.2 ± 3.7 min/bout in cows with MET (P > 0.05). Compared with healthy cows, cows with RP laid down longer and stood up for shorter times (P < 0.05), particularly before calving. In addition, cows with RP had increased mobilization of body stores and more pronounced inflammatory status, as demonstrated by plasma haptoglobin (P = 0.04) and albumin (P < 0.01) concentrations. Our data suggest that automatic monitoring of lying behaviour could help identify cows at increased risk of developing certain disorders, such as RP.

Abstract
In the first hours after calving the neonate radically modifies its anatomy and physiology to adapt to extrauterine life. These modifications, however, make the calf prone to respiratory and metabolic dysfunction. Thus, stillbirth, defined as the death of the neonate within 48 h after birth, represents a relevant issue for buffalo farming. Of the clinical procedures, the blood gas analysis of venous samples provides useful information regarding the acid-base status of the neonate, allowing the optimal management of potential illness calves. However, the blood gas parameters have never been studied in the buffalo calf in the first 72 h of life. Thus, this study aimed to report blood gas parameters at calving and 1, 12, 24, and 72 h after birth in healthy buffalo neonates born after normal parturition. The study involved 20 healthy buffalo calves, born from normal pregnancy and parturition. The parturition and the first hours after were monitored by closed-circuit television cameras, and within 1 min after calving the buffalo neonate received a clinical evaluation (APGAR, temperature), venous blood sampling for blood gas (pH, partial pressure carbon dioxide - pCO2, partial pressure oxygen - pO2, base excess, bicarbonate concentration, oxygen saturation, total carbon dioxide - tCO2, and lactate), and glycemia analysis. The same evaluations were performed after 1, 12, 24, and 72 h. The present study showed a moderate mixed acidosis at calving, similar to that reported in the bovine neonate, likely due to the high venous blood pCO2 and lactate. This acidemia resolved spontaneously within 12 h as a reduction of pCO2 (P ≤ 0.05). Lactate reduced significantly (P ≤ 0.05) only at 72 h, similarly to the trend reported previously for the bovine calf. Blood lactate concentration was correlated with glycemia at calving and 1 h (r = 0.677, P = 0.014), and with stage 2 duration (r = 0.647, P = 0.006). These findings support a possible mechanism of glucose generation induced by catecholamines coupled to anaerobic metabolism soon after calving. After calving, all the blood gas parameters changed rapidly reaching values comparable with those reported in the literature for older buffalo calves from 72 h after calving. No correlations were found between APGAR score and venous blood gas parameters, likely due to the inclusion criteria that selected only health buffalo calves born after normal parturition. The findings suggested that the venous blood gas analysis could be considered supportive rather than an alternative to the clinical evaluation of the buffalo calf.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the hormonal and metabolic factors associated with placental retention in buffaloes with respect to the roles of oxidative stress biomarkers and serotonin receptors. Blood samples were collected at weeks 3, 2 and 1 pre-partum and at calving from 37 buffaloes; thirty normally dropped their placentae (Non-RFM group) and 7 dropped their placentae after 12 hr post-calving (RFM group). Serum progesterone (P4 ), oestradiol, cortisol, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), antioxidant/oxidant biomarkers and mineral concentrations were assessed. Histopathology and histochemistry were implemented to detect collagen in foetal placental tissues. Immunohistochemistry for serotonin receptors in placental tissues was performed. Significant elevations in P4 , cortisol, NEFA, BHBA and oxidative biomarkers concentrations were observed in the RFM group. However, oestradiol, antioxidants and mineral concentrations were significantly lower in RFM buffaloes than Non-RFM group. Histopathological examination revealed degenerative changes and necrosis in retained placental tissue compared with that in normal placental tissues. Serotonin receptors were significantly expressed with collagen condensation in retained placental tissues. Furthermore, inferior reproductive performance was pronounced in the retained group. In conclusion, retained foetal membranes in buffaloes were associated with hormonal imbalance, metabolic perturbation, oxidative stress, serotonin receptor upregulation and markedly reduced fertility indices.

Abstract
In bovine placentomes, the inflammatory response is considered important for the detachment of the fetal membrane from the caruncle after parturition. Glucocorticoids, a trigger of the onset of parturition, facilitate functional maturation of placentomes via prostaglandin (PG) and estrogen production in cattle. This study investigated how exogeneous glucocorticoids, which exert immunosuppressive effects, affect placental inflammation at parturition. Placentomes were collected immediately after spontaneous or induced parturition. Parturition was conventionally induced using PGF2α or dexamethasone or with a combination of triamcinolone acetonide and high-dose betamethasone (TABET treatment). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array analysis indicated that 9/13 C-C motif chemokine ligands (CCLs) were upregulated > two-fold in spontaneous parturition, with CCL2 and CCL8 being highly expressed. The expressions of CCL2, CCL8, C-C motif chemokine receptor 1 (CCR1), and CCR5 in caruncles were significantly higher in spontaneous parturition than in induced parturition. Although the clinical dose of dexamethasone did not influence the expression of these CCLs and CCRs, TABET treatment increased CCR1 expression. CCL8, CCR1, CCR2, and CCR5 were localized in the caruncular epithelial cells. CCR2 was also localized in the epithelial cells of the cotyledonary villi. This study is the first report to reveal the disruption in CCL and CCR expression in bovine placentomes at induced parturition. Enhanced glucocorticoid exposure for the induction of parturition may upregulate CCR1 expression in placentomes, but the treatment does not adequately promote CCL expression. Additionally, immunohistochemistry suggested that the CCL-CCR system is involved in the functional regulation of maternal and fetal epithelial cells in placentomes at parturition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health traits are of significant economic importance to the dairy industry due to their effects on milk production and associated treatment costs. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide a means to identify associated genomic variants and thus reveal insights into the genetic architecture of complex traits and diseases. The objective of this study is to investigate the genetic basis of seven health traits in dairy cattle and to identify potential candidate genes associated with cattle health using GWAS, fine mapping, and analyses of multi-tissue transcriptome data. RESULTS We studied cow livability and six direct disease traits, mastitis, ketosis, hypocalcemia, displaced abomasum, metritis, and retained placenta, using de-regressed breeding values and more than three million imputed DNA sequence variants. After data edits and filtering on reliability, the number of bulls included in the analyses ranged from 11,880 (hypocalcemia) to 24,699 (livability). GWAS was performed using a mixed-model association test, and a Bayesian fine-mapping procedure was conducted to calculate a posterior probability of causality to each variant and gene in the candidate regions. The GWAS detected a total of eight genome-wide significant associations for three traits, cow livability, ketosis, and hypocalcemia, including the bovine Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) region associated with livability. Our fine-mapping of associated regions reported 20 candidate genes with the highest posterior probabilities of causality for cattle health. Combined with transcriptome data across multiple tissues in cattle, we further exploited these candidate genes to identify specific expression patterns in disease-related tissues and relevant biological explanations such as the expression of Group-specific Component (GC) in the liver and association with mastitis as well as the Coiled-Coil Domain Containing 88C (CCDC88C) expression in CD8 cells and association with cow livability. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, our analyses report six significant associations and 20 candidate genes of cattle health. With the integration of multi-tissue transcriptome data, our results provide useful information for future functional studies and better understanding of the biological relationship between genetics and disease susceptibility in cattle.

Abstract
The mechanism by which the fetal membrane detaches after parturition in cattle is poorly understood, but the upregulation of placentomal prostaglandin and estrogen synthesis are considered to be important. This study investigated whether enhanced glucocorticoid exposure affected the functional maturation of placentomes at induced parturition. Placentomes were collected immediately after spontaneous (beef; n = 5, dairy; n = 5) or induced parturition in beef and dairy cattle. Parturition was induced conventionally using prostaglandin F2α (beef; n = 7, dairy; n = 6) or dexamethasone (beef; n = 6) or with a combination of triamcinolone acetonide (a long-acting glucocorticoid) and a high dose of betamethasone (TABET treatment, beef; n = 6, dairy; n = 9). Gene expression levels and protein localization in placentomes were analyzed by RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Compared with the conventional methods, TABET treatment resulted in upregulated PTGS2 expression in cotyledons. The expression levels of PTGS2 and PGES were positively correlated in both cotyledons and caruncles. TABET treatment also upregulated the expression of CYP17A1, but not of CYP19A1, in cotyledons. The results revealed, for the first time, that PLA2G4A was localized in microvascular endothelial cells in the cotyledonary villi and the maternal septum. PTGS2 and PGES were colocalized in mononucleated cells of the cotyledonary villi and caruncle epithelial cells adjacent to the chorionic plate. TABET treatment upregulated the expression of placentomal genes involved in PGE2 synthesis and the conversion of pregnenolone to androstenedione. Thus, enhanced glucocorticoid exposure might partially facilitate the functional maturation of placentomes at induced parturition in cattle.

Abstract
This prospective study was conducted to compare two treatment protocols for retained foetal membranes (RFM) in cattle. The routine therapy consisting of intrauterine tetracycline boluses was compared with the administration of ozone foam, both intrauterine therapies without attempts to manually remove the placenta. Cows undergoing caesarean section, suffering from uterine torsion or prolapse of the uterus, and other illnesses than RFM on the first day post-partum were excluded. Values for baseline variables as age, breed, yearly milk yield, parity, pregnancy duration, calving season and number of routine intrauterine treatments were not different between the groups. Number of days with rectal temperature >39.7 °C within the first 10 days in milk (DIM) were greater in the ozone group. Number of escape therapies were recorded when there was imposing of this therapy as a result of cows having a fever (based on rectal temperature >39.7 °C) and a significant reduced food intake. Escape therapies consisted of parenteral administration of tetracyclines and NSAIDS during the first 10 DIM. Number of escape therapies, however, was not different between the groups. Results from use of a logistic regression model with fever as a dichotomous variable indicated there was no effect of breed, studbook, type of stall, pasture, business and no effect of age or milk yield. In a second assessment, cows were evaluated until 200 DIM. Results from a survival analysis indicated group (Te/Oz) did not affect rate of culling from the herd.

Abstract
In dairy cows, retained fetal membranes (RFM) affect reproductive performance. The aim of this study was to examine the leukocyte counts and the gene expression of tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-8, and IL-10 in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in cows with (n = 5) or without (n = 5) RFM during the peripartum period. The lymphocyte counts in RFM cows were higher than those in control cows throughout the experiment (p < .05). The expression of IL-8 in PMNs of control cows was higher (p < .05) compared with that of RFM cows postpartum. In cows with RFM, IL-1β expression was higher (p < .05) in PMNs at 6 weeks postpartum whereas the expression of IL-1β was lower (p < .05) in PBMCs at 4 weeks postpartum. The expression of IL-10 in PBMCs of control cows was higher (p < .05) than that of RFM cows at 2 weeks prepartum and 4 weeks postpartum. Taken together, our data indicate that changes of gene expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in RFM cows might be associated with the delayed placental separation and development of uterine inflammation in RFM cows.

Abstract
The time around calving in highly productive dairy cows is a critical period in terms of their metabolism, which is connected with high demands of the foetus as well as with the onset of lactation. Retained placenta in cows may have multifactorial aetiology, but in herds which are free from infectious diseases, the most important reasons are; periparturient metabolic changes and disturbances to the internal balance and stress. During the periparturient period, the most important factor causing immune suppression and hypotony of uterus in cows is metabolic stress due to hormonal and nutritional factors, including metabolic fluctuations, negative energy balance, as well as shortage of proteins, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. This metabolic stress as a result of an imbalance in the internal metabolic homeostasis activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPA) and increases serum corticosterid (cortisol) concentration, especially on the day of calving. Cortisol is a powerful immune suppressive factor that causes depression of leukocyte proliferation and their functions. The periparturient metabolic stress may also stimulate the production of catecholamines, especially adrenalin. Elevated levels of adrenalin activate adrenoreceptors of the myometrium, which in turn cause hypotony or atony of the uterus at calving in cows. Elevated levels of cortisol and adrenalin may significantly inhibit the rejection and expulsion of foetal membranes in cows, resulting in an increased incidence of their retention. These important mechanisms for placental retention in highly productive dairy cows often have primary nutritional metabolic aetiology, but they also occur during secondary metabolic disturbances and metabolic stress during calving. This metabolic and immunological aetiology and pathogenesis of retained placenta usually occur in highly productive periparturient cows on dairy farms in the absence of bovine infectious diseases, which can couse placentitis, stillbirth and the infectious origin of foetal membrane retention. The paper presents the most important metabolic, mineral and immunological disturbances as conditions for retained placenta in dairy cows. It also shows different methods of herd monitoring, important examples of clinical and laboratory diagnostics, and methods of nutritional and veterinary prevention of this health problem in dairy cows.

Abstract
A farm-level stochastic model was used to estimate costs of 7 common clinical diseases in the United States: mastitis, lameness, metritis, retained placenta, left-displaced abomasum, ketosis, and hypocalcemia. The total disease costs were divided into 7 categories: veterinary and treatment, producer labor, milk loss, discarded milk, culling cost, extended days open, and on-farm death. A Monte Carlo simulation with 5,000 iterations was applied to the model to account for inherent system variation. Four types of market prices (milk, feed, slaughter, and replacement cow) and 3 herd-performance factors (rolling herd average, product of heat detection rate and conception rate, and age at first calving) were modeled stochastically. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to study the relationship between total disease costs and selected stochastic factors. In general, the disease costs in multiparous cows were greater than in primiparous cows. Left-displaced abomasum had the greatest estimated total costs in all parities ($432.48 in primiparous cows and $639.51 in multiparous cows). Cost category contributions varied for different diseases and parities. Milk production loss and treatment cost were the 2 greatest cost categories. The effect of market prices were consistent in all diseases and parities; higher milk and replacement prices increased total costs, whereas greater feed and slaughter prices decreased disease costs.

Abstract
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which is one of the most problematic complications experienced by women with sexually transmitted diseases, frequently causes secondary infections after reproductive abnormalities in veterinary animals. Although the uterus is self-protective, it becomes fragile during periods or pregnancy. To investigate PID, bacteria or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) extracted from gram negative bacteria has been used to induce the disease in several animal models. However, when LPS is applied to the peritoneum, it often causes systemic sepsis leading to death and the PID was not consistently demonstrated. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been used to induce inflammation in the lungs and stomach but not tested for reproductive organs. In this study, we developed a PID model in mice by HCl and LPS sequential intracervical (i.c.) administration. The proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α, were detected in the mouse uterus by western blot analysis and cytokine enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay after HCl (25 mg/kg) administration i.c. followed by four LPS (50 mg/kg) treatments. Moreover, mice exhibited increased infiltration of neutrophils in the endometrium and epithelial layer. These results suggest that ic co-administration of HCl and LPS induces PID in mice. This new model may provide a consistent and reproducible PID model for future research.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of duration of calving and obstetric assistance on retained placenta incidence of high milk production Holstein cows. Experimental groups were determined according to the duration of the expulsive phase of calving: 2 h (n = 16), 2-4 h (n = 16) and >4 h (n = 12), and additionally allocated in two sub-groups: spontaneous calving (n = 22) and intervention calving (n = 22). Diagnosis of retained placenta was considered with a threshold of 8 h after the expulsive phase. Cows without obstetric intervention, with labor duration of 2 h, presented reduced time needed for placental release, in comparison to those with obstetric assistance. In the 2-4 h group and >4 h, there was no statistical difference. The 2 h and 2-4 h groups with intervention and the spontaneous >4 h group were considered retained placenta groups. On the other hand, performing obstetric intervention when calving period was superior to 4 h nulled the occurrence of retention of fetal membranes. As a conclusion, obstetric assistance predisposes placental retention to calving with <2 h of duration in dairy cows. Conversely, when calving is more than 4 h, performing fetal extraction has a beneficial influence on preventing retained placenta.

Abstract
The gross anatomic features (cotyledonary type) and histologic classification (synepitheliochorial) of the bovine placenta have been known for many years. Thorough ultrastructural analysis as well as a variety of descriptive studies dealing with the localization of cytoskeletal filaments, extracellular matrix, growth factor systems, steroid hormone receptors, and major histocompatibility complex have contributed further significant knowledge. However, this knowledge was not sufficient to solve clinical placenta-based problems, such as retained fetal membranes. Owing to the complexity of the fetomaternal interface in vitro, culture systems have been developed. As trophoblast giant cells (TGC) are thought to be key players in the cattle placenta, most cell culture models attempt to overcome the pitfall of losing the entire TGC population in vitro. Nevertheless, distinct cell line-based in vitro systems such as cell monolayers or 3-dimensional (co-culture) spheroids were generated for the fetal (trophoblast) and maternal (uterine epithelium) placental compartments. Monolayers have been used to study for example, growth factor or hormonal signaling and TGC formation, whereas spheroids served as models for, for example, trophoblast attachment, uterine epithelium depolarization, and also TGC formation. In the future, the use of more improved culture models might lead to better treatments of retained fetal membranes and increased prevention of embryonic loss. In addition, the in vitro models could shed more light on the mechanisms of the differentiation of uninucleate trophoblast into TGC.

Abstract
The immune system during the periparturient period is impaired. At this time the most important factor causing immune-suppression in highly productive cows is metabolic stress resulting from hormonal and metabolic fluctuations, a negative energy balance, shortage of proteins, minerals and vitamins which are required to meet the demands of the fetus as well as the onset of lactation. This stress can activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPA), which results in increase plasma corticosteroids. As a result, the cortisol concentration during the periparturient period increases by several folds particularly on the day of calving. Cortisol is a powerful immune-suppressive agent. During stress, this hormone causes depression of the leukocyte proliferation and their functions. Decreased phagocytosis of neutrophils, decreased cytotoxic ability of lymphocytes, as well as depressed activity of their cytokines, make it impossible for the normal, efficient maternal immune recognition and rejection of fetal membranes (as a foreign, allogeneic tissue expressed fetal antigens—MHC class I proteins by trophoblast cells) and finally results in their retention in cows. The metabolic periparturient stress also activates production of catecholamines, especially adrenalin. Adrenalin activates adrenoreceptors of the myometrium and then causes hypotony or atony of the uterus. Thus, cortisol and adrenalin inhibit rejection and expulsion of fetal membranes and cause their retention. These mechanisms of retained placenta (RP) often have a metabolic etiology and occur in herds, where important infectious diseases causing placentitis are absent or prevented. The aim of this article is to show the fundamental mechanisms occurring during periparturient stress and the accompanied immune-suppression in cows, as well as their consequences in relation to RP. The paper also gives examples of the symptomatic prevention of RP in cows caused by metabolic and immune suppressive factors. The prevention of RP was carried out using drugs which inhibit the activity of cortisol or adrenalin in dairy cows during calving.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mechanisms of detachment of fetal membrane after parturition in cattle are poorly understood. Glucocorticoids trigger the initiation of parturition and may facilitate the placental maturation. We compared the disappearance of trophoblast binucleate cells (BNCs) and expression of transforming growth factor-β (TGFB) in term placentomes between spontaneous and induced parturition to investigate the influences of glucocorticoids on the placental maturity. METHODS Cows were delivered spontaneously (SP group) or after the administration of prostaglandin (PG) F(2)α (PG group); dexamethasone, PGF(2)α, and estriol (DEX group); and triamcinolone acetonide, PGF(2)α, and betamethasone (BET group) and placentomes were collected immediately after parturition. The number of BNCs in hematoxylin and eosin stained section was examined. Protein localization and mRNA levels of TGFB and its receptor (TGFBR) were analyzed using immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR, respectively. RESULTS TGFB1 is characteristically localized in the maternal septum in caruncle in contrast to TGFB2 and TGFB3, which are mainly found in cotyledonary villi and maternal epithelial cells. TGFBR1 and TGFBR2 colocalized in BNCs. The number of BNCs was lower in the SP group than in PG and DEX groups. mRNA levels of TGFB1, TGFBR1 and TGFBR2 in the SP group differed from PG and DEX groups. There was no difference between SP and BET groups in all analyses. DISCUSSION These results indicate that parturition inductions using PGF(2)α or dexamethasone were not able to induce disappearance of BNCs and change of TGFB signaling. Results in the BET group suggest that investigation into types, dose, and dosage schedule of glucocorticoids may facilitate placental maturation.

Abstract
The bovine fetus, like that of other species, is a semi-allograft and the regulation of materno-fetal alloimmunity is critical to prevent its immunological rejection. In cattle, a materno-fetal alloimmune response may be beneficial at parturition. It is hypothesized that upregulation of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I on the fetal membranes toward the end of gestation induces a maternal alloimmune response that activates innate immune effector mechanisms, aiding in the loss of the adherence between the fetal membranes and the uterus. Loss of fetal-maternal adherence is pivotal for the timely expulsion of the fetal membranes and the absence (or reduction) of the maternal immune response may lead to retained fetal membranes, a common reproductive disorder of cattle. Currently, there is no effective treatment for retained fetal membranes and a better understanding of materno-fetal alloimmune-assisted separation of the fetal membranes may lead to novel targets for the treatment of retained fetal membranes. In this review, the regulation of materno-fetal alloimmunity during pregnancy in cattle, with a focus on placental MHC class I expression, and the importance of maternal alloimmunity for the timely separation of the fetal membranes, are discussed.

Abstract
Microbes commonly infect the female reproductive tract of cattle, causing infertility, abortion and post partum uterine diseases. When organisms reach the uterus, the resistance to disease depends on the balance between the classic triad of the virulence of the microbes, the host defence systems and the environment. The present review considers each aspect of this triad, using postpartum uterine disease as an exemplar for understanding disease resistance. The bacteria that cause postpartum uterine disease are adapted to the endometrium, and their microbial toxins cause tissue damage and inflammation. However, non-specific defence systems counter ascending infections of the female reproductive tract, and inflammatory responses in the endometrium are driven by innate immunity. Disease resistance to bacterial infection involves many genes involved in the maintenance or restoration of tissue homeostasis in the endometrium, including antimicrobial peptides, complement, cytokines, chemokines and Toll-like receptors. The most important environmental factors facilitating the development of postpartum uterine disease are related to trauma of the reproductive tract and to the metabolic stress of lactation in dairy cows. Long-term solutions for uterine disease will include genetic selection for disease resistance and optimising the care of the animal before, during and after parturition.

Abstract
Ketosis is associated with many transition cow diseases and the subclinical form has been found to be a common condition in high-producing dairy cows. The objectives of this field study in the Netherlands were (1) to determine risk factors for subclinical ketosis [SCK; 1.2-2.9mmol of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA)/L of serum] and clinical ketosis (CK: ≥3.0mmol of BHBA/L of serum) at 7 to 14 d in milk and (2) to assess the association of SCK and CK with production parameters at the first dairy herd improvement (DHI) testing. Twenty-three dairies were enrolled by a local veterinary practice from 2009 to 2010, and 1,715 cows were screened for ketosis by measuring serum BHBA concentrations at 7 to 14 d in milk. Overall, 47.2% of cows had SCK and 11.6% had CK. Mixed generalized logit models with a random effect of herd were used to evaluate cow level factors associated with SCK and CK. The associations of SCK and CK with milk production parameters were tested using mixed linear models with a random effect of herd. Cows at a moderate (3.25-3.75) or fat (≥4) body condition score before calving were more likely to develop SCK and CK than thin (body condition score≤3.0) cows. The risk for developing SCK was higher in parity 2 and older cows compared with heifers, whereas for CK only, parity ≥3 cows had a higher risk. The quarter of the year in which a cow calved was associated with the risk for SCK and CK. For SCK quarter 1 (January-March) and quarter 2 (April-June), and for CK quarter 1, quarter 2, and quarter 3 (July-September) all increased the risk of development of the condition compared with quarter 4 (October-December). An increased yield of colostrum at first milking was associated with increasing risk for SCK and CK. Prolonged previous lactation length and dry period length were both associated with increased odds for SCK and CK. Subclinical ketosis and CK were associated with a higher milk yield, a higher milk fat percentage, and a lower milk protein percentage at first DHI test day. Overall the study reinforces previous findings that the major risk factors for both SCK and CK are increasing parity, overconditioning of animals prepartum, season of calving, and dry period length. In addition, previous lactation length and liters of colostrum have been identified as additional risk factors for the development of ketosis.

Abstract
Retained placenta (RP) occurs frequently in dairy cattle but little is known about the pathogenic or prognostic role of the hematological changes in this disease. This retrospective study was designed to investigate the hematological changes associated with RP in the immediate post-partum period and to assess whether these changes are associated with an acute phase reaction. Data concerning hematology, acute phase proteins, markers of inflammation and serum biochemistry performed on cows at 3±1 days in milk (DIM) from two intensive farms were extracted from the database of the ProZoo project, a research project aimed to investigate the relationship between genomic traits and bovine health and production. After application of restrictive inclusion criteria, data from 45 cows, 22 with RP and 23 controls, were statistically compared. RBC count, d-ROMs concentration, and AST activity were significantly higher in the RP group than controls. Conversely, neutrophils, thiol groups, and serum zinc concentration were significantly lower in the RP group than controls. In conclusion, although retained placenta has to be considered as a syndrome with multifactorial causes, neutropenia may be a co-factor involved in its pathogenesis. Further studies are needed to clarify whether neutropenia acts as a contributor in the pathogenesis of RP or if it is a very early consequence of the syndrome, preceding any other inflammatory changes in blood.

Abstract
Systemic and local infections and inflammations are known to cause infertility in humans and animals. However, the mechanisms by which infection/inflammation induces infertility are only partially known. The objectives of this study were: (i) to provide models of systemic (acute) and local (sub-acute) inflammation by intra-peritoneal injection or intra-cervical deposition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the rabbit and (ii) to assess their effects on uterine tissues and sperm transport in the genital tract of rabbit does. Intra-peritoneal administration of different doses of LPS induced systemic effects such as fever, anorexia and changes in white blood cells (WBC) count. In our study, LPS inoculation (100μg/kg) produced an inflammation-like status that lasted for about 3 days, with minimal distress for the animals. Intra-peritoneal administration of LPS 60h before artificial insemination induced a rapid increase of IL-1β concentrations. The intra-cervical inoculation of LPS did not show any systemic effects, as confirmed by the lack of changes in body temperature, feed intake and WBC count. Histological examination of uterine tissues showed an endometritis-like inflammation status in LPS-treated does, more severe in those inoculated intra-cervically. The number of spermatozoa recovered from uterine horns and oviducts of intra-cervically treated does was less than that retrieved from intra-peritoneally treated animals and controls. These results suggest (i) that sub-acute or acute inflammation may cause infertility by compromising the uterine environment and/or impairing sperm transport and (ii) that the LPS-induced -infection/inflammation experimental model is useful for studying the mechanisms involved in reproductive dysfunctions in the rabbit.

Abstract
Simple Summary For humans and dogs to live together amiably, dog training is required, and a lack of obedience training is significantly related to the prevalence of certain behavioral problems. To train efficiently, it is important that the trainer/owner ascertains the learning level of the dog. Understanding the dog’s body language helps humans understand the animal’s emotions. This study evaluated the posture of certain dog body parts during operant conditioning. Our findings suggest that certain postures were related to the dog’s learning level during operant conditioning. Being aware of these postures could be helpful to understand canine emotion during learning. Abstract The facial expressions and body postures of dogs can give helpful information about their moods and emotional states. People can more effectively obedience train their dogs if we can identify the mannerisms associated with learning in dogs. The aim of this study was to clarify the dog’s body language during operant conditioning to predict achievement in the test that followed by measuring the duration of behaviors. Forty-six untrained dogs (17 males and 26 females) of various breeds were used. Each session consisted of 5 minutes of training with a treat reward followed by 3 minutes of rest and finally an operant conditioning test that consisted of 20 “hand motion” cues. The operant tests were conducted a total of nine times over three consecutive days, and the success numbers were counted. The duration of the dog’s behavior, focusing on the dog’s eyes, mouth, ears, tail and tail-wagging, was recorded during the operant conditioning sessions before the test. Particular behaviors, including wide-eyes, closed mouth, erect ears, and forward and high tail carriage, without wagging or with short and quick wagging, related to high achievement results. It is concluded that dogs' body language during operant conditioning was related to their success rate.

Abstract
As European dairy farms become larger and diverge between grass-based and fully housed systems, interest in the welfare of the dairy cow and related environmental issues by consumers and legislators is increasing. These pressures mean that good nutrition and management, which underpin much dairy cow welfare, is critical. Despite considerable research into the management and nutrition of the dairy cow from calf to adulthood there is much on-farm variability in its application. While the incidences of many endemic diseases are reduced most are still significant, for example lameness. In addition, trade and climate change are bringing a more diverse range of pathogens, parasites and pests into Northern Europe. Housing aspects are limited in application by economics and in most cases still do not match grazing for welfare in temperate climates. Genomic technologies offer increased opportunities to breed for 'robustness' but like 'precision animal management systems' have still to be fully exploited.

Abstract
Failure of the timely expulsion of the fetal membranes, called retained placenta, leads to reduced fertility, increased veterinary costs and reduced milk yields. The objectives of this study were to concurrently look at the heritable and non-heritable genetic effects on retained placenta and test the hypothesis that a greater coefficient of relationship between dam and calf increases the risk of retained placenta in the dam. The average incidence of retained placenta in 43,661 calvings of Meuse-Rhine-Yssel cattle was 4.5%, ranging from 0% to 29.6% among half-sib groups. The average pedigree based relationship between the sire and the maternal grandsire was 0.05 and ranged from 0 to 1.04. Using a sire-maternal grandsire model the heritability was estimated at 0.22 (SEM=0.07) which is comparable with estimates for other dual purpose breeds. The coefficient of relationship between the sire and the maternal grandsire had an effect on retained placenta. The coefficient of relationship between the sire and the maternal grandsire was used as a proxy for the coefficient of relationship between dam and calf, which is correlated with the probability of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I compatibility between dam and calf. MHC class I compatibility is an important risk factor for retained placenta. Although the MHC class I haplotype is genetically determined, MHC class I compatibility is not heritable. This study shows that selection against retained placenta is possible and indicates that preventing the mating of related parents may play a role in the prevention of retained placenta.
