Abstract
Reversible nucleophilic addition to a phthalocyanine core was observed for the first time for the electron-deficient cationic phosphorus(V) complex [PcP(OMe)2]+, whose reaction with KOH afforded a highly distorted nonaromatic adduct bearing an OH group at one of the α-pyrrolic carbon atoms. This adduct was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ESI HRMS, and NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, together with quantum-chemical modeling. The acidic treatment of this adduct restored aromaticity and recovered the starting cationic complex. The reversible aromaticity breakage resulted in dramatic changes in the photophysical properties of the studied complex, which could pave the way to novel switchable Pc-based compounds and materials.

Abstract
Unsymmetrical metal-free phthalocyanine was synthesized through cyclotetramerization of 4-[2,6-dimethyl-4-(4-tert-butyl-phenylazo)phenoxy]phthalonitrile and 4-(hexylthio)phthalonitrile in the presence of lithium in [Formula: see text]-pentanol, then metal-free phthalocyanine was obtained by acidification with acetic acid. Finally, metalation was achieved by refluxing metal-free phthalocyanine in [Formula: see text]-pentanol in the presence of zinc (II) salt. The structure of synthesized phthalocyanine derivatives were characterized by using proton nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The HOMO–LUMO energies were computed using density functional theory. The HOMO–LUMO energy difference is 2.28 eV. The calculated results were consistent with the experimental data. In addition, aggregation behaviors and general trends for photophysical properties of these phthalocyanine derivatives were studied in tetrahydrofuran. The emission intensities of these phthalocyanine derivatives were strongly quenched by 1,4-benzoquinone in tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract
The lanthanide directed self-assembly of chiral amphiphilic 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid based ligands 1 and 2 with various Ln(CF3SO3)3 (Ln = TbIII, SmIII, LuIII, DyIII) salts was studied in CH3CN and evaluated with the expected 1 : 3 and 1 : 1 Ln : Ligand species forming in solution. Ligand chirality was retained and transferred, as depicted by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) measurements (for TbIII and SmIII), to the lanthanide centre upon complexation with high dissymmetry factor values for the SmIII complexes obtained (glum = -0.44 and 0.29 and 0.45 and -0.23 for the 4G5/2→6H5/2 and the 4G5/2→6H7/2 transitions of Sm·13 and Sm·23, respectively). The ability of the complexes to form stable Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface was also established while Langmuir-Blodgett films of Tb·L3 and Sm·L3 exhibited lanthanide luminescent emission.

Abstract
In order to improve the efficacy of photochemical properties for photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications, carboxylic acid groups axially conjugated with silicon(IV) and at the peripheral position with zinc(II) phthalocyanine skeletons for new photosensitizers to investigate the influence of the COOH group positions on the photophysicochemical performance are described in this study. Silicon (IV) (3 and 5) and zinc (II) (7) phthalocyanines were characterized by UV-vis, FTIR, 1H-NMR, MALDI-TOF MS and elemental analysis spectral data. Furthermore, the photophysical (fluorescence quantum yields and fluorescence quenching studies), photochemical (photodegradation and singlet oxygen generation) and aggregation properties of the newly synthesized phthalocyanines were investigated in dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solutions. The results were compared with that of zinc and silicon phthalocyanines. Singlet oxygen quantum yields ranged from 0.23 to 0.63 via Type II mechanism under the experimental conditions studied. The fluorescence of the phthalocyanine complexes (3, 5 and 7) is effectively quenched by 1,4-benzoquinone (BQ) in DMSO, DMF and THF.

Abstract
This study takes a novel approach to the enhancement of receptor properties of thin-film sensors based on hemicyanine dyes with dithia-aza-crown-ionophoric moiety. By means of in situ UV-vis and X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements, it was revealed that the introduction of up to 0.25 mmol of Hg2+ under a preliminarily compressed monolayer, formed on pure water, does not lead to cation binding. This is due to the formation of "head-to-tail" aggregates (H-type), in which ionophoric group is blocked by the neighboring molecule. However, the presence of barium cations in the subphase under the forming Langmuir monolayer of the mentioned compound causes codirectional (head-to-head) orientation of chromoionophore fragments. This provides preorganization of a monolayer structure that facilitates the binding of complementary mercury cations, even in a compressed state: asymmetric sandwich complexes containing two dye molecules coordinate a Hg2+ cation between them. This complex structure was confirmed by molecular modeling based on the electron density distribution calculated from XRR measurement data. Such preorganization of supramolecular ensembles induced by cations, which do not participate in the complex formation with macroheterocyclic receptors, may have applications in fields where strict control of molecular orientation at the interface is required, such as nanoelectronics, sensorics, catalysis, etc.

Abstract
A series of novel metal-free and zinc (II), copper (II), cobalt (II), and manganese (III) phthalocyanine complexes bearing peripheral 2,6-dimethyl-4-(4-tert-butyl-phenylazo)phenoxy units have been synthesized. Novel phthalonitrile derivative required for the preparation of these phthalocyanine complexes was prepared by a base-catalyzed nucleophilic aromatic nitro displacement of 4-nitrophthalonitrile with 2,6-dimethyl-4-(4-tert-butyl-phenylazo)phenol. The structures of these new compounds were characterized by using elemental analyses, proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The photophysical properties of metal-free and zinc(II) phthalocyanines were studied in tetrahydrofuran. The electrochemical properties of the phthalocyanine complexes were investigated by cyclic and square wave voltammetry.

Abstract
In this work, synthesis of novel symmetrical 4-(2-bromo-4-(5-bromo-1H-benzo[d] imidazol-2-yl) phenoxy) tetra substituted zinc phthalocyanine has been reported. The novel benzimidazole zinc phthlocynine compound (3) has been characterized by MALDI-TOF MS, FT-IR, UV-vis, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. This new compound 3 displayed excellent selectivity towards Bi3+ ion in the presence of other competitive ions including Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+ Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Sn2+, Mg2+, Na+, Ni2+ and Pb2+ respectively. Upon addition of Bi3+ into the solution of compound 3 in DMSO, dramatic change was observed in the Q- and the B-bands in UV-visible spectra as a result of donor acceptor interactions. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were also studied using 2,7-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) a fluorescent probe which is converted to highly fluorescent dichlorofluorescein (DCF) in the presence of ROS. This property of non-aggregating zinc phthalocyanine is promising as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy of cancer.

Highly selective enzymatic-free electrochemical sensor for dopamine detection based on the self-assemblied film of a sandwich mixed (phthalocyaninato) (porphyrinato) europium derivative. Abstract
An efficient enzymatic-free electrochemical sensor is firstly developed based on the self-assemblied film of a sandwich mixed (phthalocyaninato) (porphyrinato) europium(III) double-decker complex, Eu(Pc)[T(OH)PP], [Pc = phthalocyaninate, T(OH)PP = 5,10,15,tris (4-tert-butylphenyl)-20-(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrinate] prepared by using a solution-processing QLS method. The Eu(Pc)[T(OH)PP]semiconducting active layer on an ITO working electrode leads to a good sensing property for the detection of dopamine with an excellent selectivity, due to the high Eu(Pc)[T(OH)PP] molecular ordering/packing in the QLS film and more favorable interaction between the Eu(Pc)[T(OH)PP] and DA molecules. The amperometric responses are linearly proportional to the concentration of dopamine in the range of 8–100 [Formula: see text]M, with a low detection limit of 4.8 [Formula: see text]M and good sensitivity, indicating the great potential of electroactive tetrapyrrole rare earth sandwich type complexes in the field of nonenzymatic electrochemical sensors.

Abstract
The unique photophysical properties of the Ln(III) series has led to significant research efforts being directed towards their application in sensors. However, for “real-life” applications, these sensors should ideally be immobilised onto surfaces without loss of function. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique offers a promising method in which to achieve such immobilisation. This mini-review focuses on synthetic strategies for film formation, the effect that film formation has on the physical properties of the Ln(III) amphiphile, and concludes with examples of Ln(III) LB films being used as sensors.

Abstract
SAMs of a Y(iii) double-decker complex on ITO have been prepared and their electrical and optical properties explored, exhibiting three accessible stable redox states with characteristic absorption bands in the visible spectra, corresponding to three complementary colors (i.e., green, blue and red). These absorption bands are exploited as output signals of this robust ternary electrochemical switch, behaving hence as an electrochromic molecular-based device.

Abstract
A method has been developed to obtain good quality Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of mixtures of lutetium bisphthalocyanine and carbon nanotubes. The π-A isotherms exhibit high monolayer stability and the compressed monolayers are easily transferred to solid substrates by Y-type deposition. The electronic absorption spectra of the composite LB films show the characteristic bands of both compounds; the bands appear broader and shifted to higher wavelengths than those observed in solutions or in disordered films prepared by the casting method. The films are sensitive to oxidant or reducing vapors, whose presence cause modifications in the electronic absorption spectra of the films. These fast and reversible changes can be the basis of optical sensors based on thin films of lutetium bisphthalocyanine and carbon nanotubes. LB film electrodes immersed in KCl and KClO4 solutions show electroactivity associated to the oxidation and reduction of the phthalocyanine ring. Important changes in the UV-vis-NIR spectra registered in situ simultaneously to the application of the electrical potential have been observed. The electrochromism observed opens the possibility of using such thin films in electrochromic devices. Composite films show characteristic electrochemical responses when exposed to solutions of antioxidants, where a certain degree of electrocatalytic effect is observed. The enhanced degree of selectivity can be used in the development of voltammetric sensors.
