Strongest chemical weathering in response to the coldest period in Guyuan, Ningxia, China, during 14-11 Ma

Moisture evolution in Central Asia including Northwest China shows less similarity with its surroundings and attracts a growing number of studies. In this study, a well-dated thick lacustrine sequence is chosen in Northwest China and detailed geochemical analysis is conducted during the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT, 14–11 Ma). The multi-proxy records (Na₂O/Al₂O₃, CIA, Rb/Sr) revealed that chemical weathering was the strongest during 11.85–11 Ma, the coldest period in 14–11 Ma as evidenced by the global deep-sea oxygen isotope records. Accordingly, we conclude that global climate cooled during MMCT and reached the coldest during 11.85–11 Ma. Thus, the westerly circulation became the strongest during this period, which brought more water vapor to Northwest China and the chemical weathering was significantly improved. On the other hand, the significant decrease in temperature led to the marked weakening of evapotranspiration, and thus the effective humidity was relatively increased. Both aspects contribute greatly to the significant enhancement of chemical weathering in eastern Central Asia. This weathering history of the sediments in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau is of great scientific significance to understanding tectonism and climate change in Asia during MMCT.

Abrupt conclusion of the late Miocene-early Pliocene biogenic bloom at 4.6-4.4 Ma

The late Miocene-early Pliocene biogenic bloom was an extended time interval characterised by elevated ocean export productivity at numerous locations. As primary productivity is nutrient-limited at low-to-mid latitudes, this bloom has been attributed to an increase or a redistribution of available nutrients, potentially involving ocean-gateway or monsoon-related mechanisms. While the exact causal feedbacks remain debated, there is even less consensus on what caused the end of the biogenic bloom. Here, we compile Mio-Pliocene paleoproductivity proxy data from all major ocean basins to evaluate the timing and pacing of this termination. This systematic analysis reveals an abrupt and sustained reduction in low-latitude ocean productivity at 4.6-4.4 Ma. The decline in productivity coincided with a prolonged period of low orbital eccentricity and a shift towards lower-amplitude obliquity, an astronomical configuration linked to reduced East Asian Monsoon intensity and decreased riverine nutrient supply.

Isolation of the South China Sea from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre since the latest Miocene due to formation of the Luzon Strait

The North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSG) plays a major role in present global ocean circulation. At times, the gyre has coursed through the South China Sea, but its role in the evolutionary development of that Sea remains uncertain. This work systematically describes a major shift in NPSG paleo-circulation evident from sedimentary features observed in seismic and bathymetric data. These data outline two contourite depositional systems—a buried one formed in the late Miocene, and a latest Miocene to present-day system. The two are divided by a prominent regional discontinuity that represents a major shift in paleo-circulation during the latest Miocene (~ 6.5 Ma). The shift coincides with the further restriction of the South China Sea with respect to the North Pacific due to the formation of the Luzon Strait as a consequence of further northwest movement of the Philippine Sea plate. Before that restriction, data indicate vigorous NPSG circulation in the South China Sea. Semi-closure, however, established a new oceanographic circulation regime in the latest Miocene. This work demonstrates the significant role of recent plate tectonics, gateway development, and marginal seas in the establishment of modern global ocean circulation.

First levantine fossil murines shed new light on the earliest intercontinental dispersal of mice

Recent extensive field prospecting conducted in the Upper Miocene of Lebanon resulted in the discovery of several new fossiliferous localities. One of these, situated in the Zahleh area (Bekaa Valley, central Lebanon) has yielded a particularly diverse vertebrate fauna. Micromammals constitute an important part of this assemblage because not only do they represent the first Neogene rodents and insectivores from Lebanon, but they are also the only ones from the early Late Miocene of the Arabian Peninsula and circumambient areas. Analyses of the murines from Zahleh reveal that they belong to a small-sized early Progonomys, which cannot be assigned to any of the species of the genus hitherto described. They are, thereby, shown to represent a new species: Progonomys manolo. Morphometric analyses of the outline of the first upper molars of this species suggest a generalist and omnivorous diet. This record sheds new light onto a major phenomenon in the evolutionary history of rodents, which is the earliest dispersal of mice. It suggests that the arrival of murines in Africa got under way through the Levant rather than via southern Europe and was monitored by the ecological requirements of Progonomys.

Causal evidence between monsoon and evolution of rhizomyine rodents

The modern Asian monsoonal systems are currently believed to have originated around the end of the Oligocene following a crucial step of uplift of the Tibetan-Himalayan highlands. Although monsoon possibly drove the evolution of many mammal lineages during the Neogene, no evidence thereof has been provided so far. We examined the evolutionary history of a clade of rodents, the Rhizomyinae, in conjunction with our current knowledge of monsoon fluctuations over time. The macroevolutionary dynamics of rhizomyines were analyzed within a well-constrained phylogenetic framework coupled with biogeographic and evolutionary rate studies. The evolutionary novelties developed by these rodents were surveyed in parallel with the fluctuations of the Indian monsoon so as to evaluate synchroneity and postulate causal relationships. We showed the existence of three drops in biodiversity during the evolution of rhizomyines, all of which reflected elevated extinction rates. Our results demonstrated linkage of monsoon variations with the evolution and biogeography of rhizomyines. Paradoxically, the evolution of rhizomyines was accelerated during the phases of weakening of the monsoons, not of strengthening, most probably because at those intervals forest habitats declined, which triggered extinction and progressive specialization toward a burrowing existence.
