Abstract
The ovary is one of the first organs to show overt signs of aging in the human body, and ovarian aging is associated with a loss of gamete quality and quantity. The age-dependent decline in ovarian function contributes to infertility and an altered endocrine milieu, which has ramifications for overall health. The aging ovarian microenvironment becomes fibro-inflammatory and stiff with age, and this has implications for ovarian physiology and pathology, including follicle growth, gamete quality, ovulation dynamics, and ovarian cancer. Thus, developing a non-invasive tool to measure and monitor the stiffness of the human ovary would represent a major advance for female reproductive health and longevity. Shear wave elastography is a quantitative ultrasound imaging method for evaluation of soft tissue stiffness. Shear wave elastography has been used clinically in assessment of liver fibrosis and characterization of tendinopathies and various neoplasms in thyroid, breast, prostate, and lymph nodes as a non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic tool. In this study, we review the underlying principles of shear wave elastography and its current clinical uses outside the reproductive tract as well as its successful application of shear wave elastography to reproductive tissues, including the uterus and cervix. We also describe an emerging use of this technology in evaluation of human ovarian stiffness via transvaginal ultrasound. Establishing ovarian stiffness as a clinical biomarker of ovarian aging may have implications for predicting the ovarian reserve and outcomes of Assisted Reproductive Technologies as well as for the assessment of the efficacy of emerging therapeutics to extend reproductive longevity. This parameter may also have broad relevance in other conditions where ovarian stiffness and fibrosis may be implicated, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, late off target effects of chemotherapy and radiation, premature ovarian insufficiency, conditions of differences of sexual development, and ovarian cancer. Summary sentence: Shear Wave Elastography is a non-invasive technique to study human tissue stiffness, and here we review its clinical applications and implications for reproductive health and disease.

Abstract
Ultrasound elastography is widely used to assess tissue stiffness for lesion characterization, including differentiation between benign and malignant lesions. This study focuses on the use of elastography in the male pelvis, including the prostate, testicles, and rectum, by comparing elastography types (shear wave and strain). This article provides a summary of the existing literature on the use of elastography in the male pelvic region and outlines the clinical perspective. Ultrasound elastography is a good technique for evaluating and monitoring lesions in the male pelvic region.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate and quantify age-related changes in lower limb muscle stiffness in typically developing children and adolescents using acoustic radiation force impulse shear wave elastography. MATERIALS AND METHODS Shear wave velocities of bilateral rectus femoris, tibialis anterior, and medial gastrocnemius muscles at rest were obtained in typically developing children and adolescents aged 3 to 18 years. The participants were classified into three age groups: Group 1 (children), 3 to 7 years old; Group 2, 8 to 12 (pre-adolescent); and Group 3 (adolescent), 13 to 18. The shear wave velocities of muscle were compared across the three age groups, as well as compared between right- and left-side limbs. The correlation between shear wave velocities and body weight or body mass index was assessed. RESULTS Of the 47 participants, 21 were in Group 1, 17 in Group 2, and 9 in Group 3. There were no significant differences among the three age groups' shear wave velocities of bilateral lower limb muscles, and no significant differences between right and left sides. There was no correlation between muscle stiffness and body weight or body mass index. CONCLUSION The present pilot study applied acoustic radiation force impulse shear wave elastography to quantify lower limb muscle stiffness in typically developing children and adolescents aged 3 to 18 years, suggesting no marked change in muscle stiffness occurs as they develop.

Abstract
Background: The pericruciate fat pad (PCFP) in the knee joint is still insufficiently studied despite its potential role in knee pathologies. This is the first reported study which aimed to clarify the characteristics of the PCFP in healthy individuals and contrast them with cases of post-traumatic injuries. Methods: Conducted as a retrospective cross-sectional study (n = 110 knees each) following STROBE guidelines, it employed grayscale ultrasound with echogenicity measurement, compression elastography with elasticity measurement, and Color Doppler for blood flow assessment. Results: PCFP showed a homogenic and hyperechoic echostructure. The echogenicity of the PCFP was higher than that of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) (p < 0.001, z-score = 8.97) and of the medial head of gastrocnemius (MHG) (p = 0.007, z-score = 2.72) in healthy knees, but lower than subcutaneous fat (SCF) (p < 0.001, z-score = -6.52). Post-injury/surgery, PCFP echogenicity surpassed other structures (p < 0.001; z-score for PCL 12.2; for MHG 11.65 and for SCF 12.36) and notably exceeded the control group (p < 0.001, z-score = 8.78). PCFP elasticity was lower than MHG and SCF in both groups, with significantly reduced elasticity in post-traumatic knees (ratio SCF/PCFP 15.52 ± 17.87 in case group vs. 2.26 ± 2.4 in control group; p < 0.001; z-score = 9.65). Blood flow was detected in 71% of healthy PCFPs with three main patterns. Conclusions: The main findings, indicating increased echogenicity and reduced elasticity of PCFP post-trauma, potentially related to fat pad fibrosis, suggest potential applications of echogenicity and elasticity measurements in detecting and monitoring diverse knee pathologies. The description of vascularity variations supplying the PCFP adds additional value to the study by emphasizing the clinically important role of PCFP as a bridge for the middle genicular artery on its way to the inside of the knee joint.

Abstract
Ultrasound elastography is a recently developed method for accurate measurement of soft tissue stiffness in addition to the clinician's subjective evaluation. The present review briefly describes the ultrasound elastography techniques and outlines clinical applications for tendon, muscle, nerve, skin and other soft tissues of the hand and upper limb. Strain elastography provides a qualitative evaluation of the stiffness, and shear-wave elastography generates quantitative elastograms superimposed on a B-mode image. The stiffness in degenerative tendinopathy and/or tendon injury was significantly lower than in a normal tendon in several studies. Elastography is also a reliable method to evaluate functional muscle activity, compared to conventional surface electromyography. The median nerve is consistently stiffer in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome than in healthy subjects, on whatever ultrasound elastography technique. Elastography distinguishes normal skin from scars and can be used to evaluate scar severity and treatment. Elastography has huge clinical applications in musculoskeletal tissues. Continued development of systems and increased training of clinicians will expand our knowledge of elastography and its clinical applications in the future.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES To compare urethral stricture shear wave elastography (SWE) with normal areas and assess its association with other explanatory variables. SUBJECTS AND METHODS we recruited all men with urethral stricture disease referred to our center between December 2021 and July 2023. Patients underwent SWE and elasticity in the stricture area, and one and three centimeters distant from the stricture were measured. Gathered data were analyzed using Freidman and post hoc analysis, correlation methods, student t-tests, and one-way ANOVA. RESULTS 22 patients were recruited for our study. Spongiofibrosis was significantly higher in the stricture area relative to the one-centimeter-distant adjacent area (p < .0005), in the one-centimeter-distant compared to the three-centimeter-distant area (p = .002), and in the stricture area relative to the three-centimeter-distant area (p < .0005). There was no association between elasticity ratio and patient age or stricture location. Likewise, there was no difference in elasticity ratios between bulbar and pendulous strictures (p = 0.19) or among different etiologies of urethral strictures (p = 0.76). CONCLUSION There is a significant difference in elasticity between the urethral stricture area and other parts of the corpus spongiosum. Normal areas closer to strictures are stiffer. The elasticity ratio is unrelated to patient age or prior internal urethromies. Neither stricture locations nor distinct urethral stricture etiologies differed in elasticity ratios.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Effective evaluation of rotator cuff tear residual tendon quality is the key to surgical repair. However, until now, the evaluation of rotator cuff tissue by ultrasonic shear wave elasticity (SWE) has been controversial. This prospective study analyzed the association between preoperative SWE and arthroscopic residual tendon quality scores. METHODS The shear wave velocity (SWV) of the deltoid muscle, the supraspinatus tendon, and the supraspinatus muscle were measured in full-thickness rotator cuff tear patients. Tendon quality was scored according to tear size, tendon margin, tendon thickness, and footprint coverage during arthroscopy. The arthroscopic scores were used as the gold standard, and the SWV ratio of tendon and muscle (supraspinatus tendon/deltoid and supraspinatus muscle/deltoid) were calculated and correlated with the arthroscopic scores. RESULT Eighty-nine patients (129 shoulders) were enrolled, including 89 operation shoulders and 40 control shoulders. In the group of operation shoulders, both the SWV ratios of tendon (SWV-RT) and the SWV ratio of muscle (SWV-RM) were negatively correlated with arthroscopic scores (The correlation coefficient (R) ranged from -0.722 to -0.884 and -0.569 to -0.689). The SWV-RT and SWV-RM of the operation shoulders were significantly lower than that of the control shoulders (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION SWE could be used to predict the quality of the residual tendon before the rotator cuff repair. SWV of the supraspinatus tendon and muscle was a useful parameter to predict the quality of the residual tendon. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT Measuring the shear wave velocity of the supraspinatus tendon and muscle with SWE is useful for predicting the quality of the residual tendon which is one of the key factors for a successful rotator cuff repair. KEY POINTS • Evaluating the quality of the residual tendon is important before surgery. • Elasticity measurements were negatively correlated with the arthroscopic score. • SWE is useful for predicting the quality of the residual tendon.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The main generator of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is still unknown. This study aimed to clarify the main generator of DOMS. METHODS Twelve participants performed eccentric exercise (EE) on lower legs. MRI and ultrasound were used to assess changes of calf muscle and deep fascia before and after EE. These results were then compared to the muscle pain level. RESULTS Compared to baseline, muscle pain peaked at 24-48 h after EE (downstairs 22.25 ± 6.196, 57.917 ± 9.298, F = 291.168, p < 0.01; resting 5.833 ± 1.899, 5.083 ± 2.429, F = 51.678, p < 0.01). Shear wave speed (SWE) of the deep fascia and T2 values of the gastrocnemius muscle and deep fascia all increased and peaked at 48 h after EE (1.960 ± 0.130, F = 22.293; 50.237 ± 2.963, F = 73.172; 66.328 ± 2.968, F = 231.719, respectively, p < 0.01). These measurements were positively correlated with DOMS (downstairs: r = 0.46, 0.76, 0.87, respectively, p < 0.001; resting: r = 0.42, 0.70, 0.77, respectively, p < 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between SWE and T2 values of deep fascia (r = 0.54, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION DOMS is a common result of muscle and fascia injuries. Deep fascia edema and stiffness play a crucial role in DOMS, which can be effectively evaluated MR-T2 and SWE. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT Delayed-onset muscle soreness is a common result of muscle and deep fascia injuries, in which the edema and stiffness of the deep fascia play a crucial role. Both MRI and shear wave elastography can be effectively used to evaluate soft tissue injuries. Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes accelerates the loss of muscle mass and strength. Sarcopenia is also one of the chronic complications of diabetes. OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical value of B mode ultrasound (BMUS) and shear wave elastography (SWE) for predicting type 2 diabetic sarcopenia. METHODS We recorded Skeletal Muscle Mass Index (ASMI), grip strength, muscle thickness (MT), pinna angle (PA), fascicle length (FL), and the difference of Young's modulus in the relaxed states and tense states (ΔSWE). The correlations between clinical indicators and ultrasound characteristics were compared. A diagnostic model of sarcopenia was developed to assess the independent correlates and evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of sarcopenia. RESULTS ASMI was significantly and positively correlated with MT and ΔSWE (r = 0.826, 0.765, P < 0.01), and grip strength was significantly and positively correlated with MT and ΔSWE (r = 0.797, 0.818, P < 0.01). MT was the most significant predictor of sarcopenia (OR = 4.576, P < 0.001), and the cut-off value of MT was 11.4 mm (AUC: 0.952). CONCLUSION BMUS and SWE can quantitatively assess muscle mass and strength, and are effective methods to predict the occurrence of sarcopenia in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Quadriceps contracture is an abnormal pathological shortening of the muscle-tendon unit. To improve the prognosis of quadriceps contracture, improvement of its diagnostic method is needed. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic utility of ultrasound shear wave elastography in a rat model of quadriceps contracture induced by immobilization. Fifty Wistar rats were randomly divided into control and immobilization groups. During up to 4 weeks of joint immobilization, the quadriceps elastic modulus, muscle hardness, creatinine phosphokinase levels, joint range of motion, histopathologic parameters, and levels of fibrosis-associated mRNA expression were measured every week in the immobilization and control groups and compared. In the immobilization group, the elastic modulus gradually but significantly increased (p < 0.05) throughout the immobilization period. However, muscle hardness and serum creatinine phosphokinase levels only increased at 1 and 2 weeks after the start of immobilization, respectively. Muscle atrophy and shortening progressed throughout the immobilization group. Collagen type I and III, α-SMA protein, and mRNA expression of IL-1β and TGF-β1 significantly increased (p < 0.05) throughout in the immobilization group. Ultrasound shear wave elastography is the most useful method for clinical assessment of muscle contracture.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate whether the collaboration of shear wave elastosonography (SWE) and B-mode ultrasonography (US) could be offered as diagnostic tools to assess the presence, severity, and progress of bruxism, as well as a biomarker for the effectiveness of treatment in daily clinical practice. The study was designed as a quantitative evaluation of the masseter muscles (MMs) of the clinically diagnosed bruxism patients suffering from myofascial pain and MMs of the healthy individuals. Clinical examinations were made according to the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (DC/TMD), and pain was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). Painful MMs with VAS scores ≥ 4 were assigned to Group A, and healthy MMs were assigned to Group B. Also, the MMs of the painful bruxers were analyzed based on wearing occlusal splints. Group A was divided into two subgroups as splint users (Group AI) and non-users (Group AII). All the participants were scanned with dynamic US and SWE to quantify the size and stiffness of the MMs. Measurements of each muscle pair while the jaw is in a resting position (relaxation) and clenching position (contraction) were recorded. The significant differences in stiffness and thickness became visible in the relaxation state. Bruxism patients with myofascial pain had significantly harder and thinner MMs than healthy individuals. During the relaxation, the mean thickness and elasticity values were 9.17 ± 0.40 mm and 39.13 ± 4.52 kPa for Group A and 10.38 ± 0.27 and 27.73 ± 1.92 for Group B, respectively. Also, stiffer MMs were measured in Group AII (38.16 ± 3.61 kPa) than in Group AI (26.91 ± 2.13 kPa). In conclusion, the combination of SWE and US using a dynamic examination technique has the potential to be a valuable tool for the management of bruxism patients suffering from myofascial pain.

Abstract
Background Shear wave elastography (SWE) is an emerging ultrasound-based technology that provides a quantitative assessment of musculoskeletal tissue integrity. This systematic review investigates the use of SWE in the evaluation of rotator cuff tears. Methods PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies from 1901 up to June 2022. Articles utilizing SWE in rotator cuff tears were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The studies included involved the assessment of shear wave velocity, tendon thickness and stiffness after healing, and fatty infiltrates evaluation using SWE. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate the risk of bias in included observational studies. Double-sided P value < .05 was considered statistically significant. Results Sixteen studies comprising 520 patients were included in the systematic review. SWE demonstrated that shear wave velocities in torn supraspinatus tendons were lower than in healthy supraspinatus tendons. A decrease in tendon SWE modulus elasticity was observed in tendinopathic tendons. Shear wave velocity decreased with increasing fat content and muscle atrophy. The velocity of SWE in muscle in re-tear groups was greater than in the healed group at 1 month after surgery (P < .05). Conclusion SWE ultrasound of the supraspinatus tendon can be a useful diagnostic tool for orthopedic surgeons that provide quantitative information on tendinopathic stiffness, velocity, fatty infiltrate, and elasticity characteristics. Decreased tendon velocity of SWE may predict recurrent rotator cuff tears and be useful in postoperative evaluations for muscle healing to plan for future management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Shear wave elastography (SWE) was used to quantify change in upper extremity muscle stiffness in patients with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (USCP) following botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) therapy. We hypothesized that SWE measures would decrease following ultrasound-guided BTX-A injection, and correlate with functional improvement. METHODS SWE measures of BTX-A treated muscles were recorded immediately pre-injection, and at 1-, 3- and 6-months post-injection. At the same timepoints, functional assessment was performed using the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), and passive and active range of motion (PROM and AROM) measures. Correlation of SWE with MAS, PROM and AROM, as well as the relationship between change in SWE and change in MAS, PROM and AROM was determined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and generalized estimating equation modeling. RESULTS 16 muscles were injected and longitudinally assessed. SWE and MAS scores decreased following BTX-A injection (p = 0.030 and 0.004, respectively), reflecting decreased quantitative and qualitative muscle stiffness. Decreased SWE reached statistical significance at 1- and 3-months, and 1-, 3- and 6-months for MAS. When comparing relative change in SWE to relative change in AROM, larger change in SWE strongly correlated with positive change in AROM (p-value range:<0.001-0.057). BTX-A responders also demonstrated lower baseline SWE (1.4 m/s) vs. non-responders (1.9 m/s), p = 0.035. CONCLUSION Ultrasound-guided BTX-A injections in patients with USCP resulted in decreased quantitative and qualitative muscle stiffness. Strong correlation between change in SWE and AROM, as well as the significant difference in baseline SWE for BTX-A responders and non-responders, suggests SWE may provide a useful tool to predict and monitor BTX-A response.

Abstract
Ultrasound (US) is an important imaging tool for skeletal muscle analysis. The advantages of US include point-of-care access, real-time imaging, cost-effectiveness, and absence of ionizing radiation. However, US can be highly dependent on the operator and/or US system, and a portion of the potentially useful information carried by raw sonographic data is discarded in image formation for routine qualitative US. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) methods provide analysis of the raw or post-processed data, revealing additional information about normal tissue structure and disease status. There are four QUS categories that can be used on muscle and are important to review. First, quantitative data derived from B-mode images can help determine the macrostructural anatomy and microstructural morphology of muscle tissues. Second, US elastography can provide information about muscle elasticity or stiffness through strain elastography or shear wave elastography (SWE). Strain elastography measures the induced tissue strain caused either by internal or external compression by tracking tissue displacement with detectable speckle in B-mode images of the examined tissue. SWE measures the speed of induced shear waves traveling through the tissue to estimate the tissue elasticity. These shear waves may be produced using external mechanical vibrations or internal "push pulse" ultrasound stimuli. Third, raw radiofrequency signal analyses provide estimates of fundamental tissue parameters, such as the speed of sound, attenuation coefficient, and backscatter coefficient, which correspond to information about muscle tissue microstructure and composition. Lastly, envelope statistical analyses apply various probability distributions to estimate the number density of scatterers and quantify coherent to incoherent signals, thus providing information about microstructural properties of muscle tissue. This review will examine these QUS techniques, published results on QUS evaluation of skeletal muscles, and the strengths and limitations of QUS in skeletal muscle analysis.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to assess the biomechanical impact of Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) on the elasticity of the gastrocnemius medius-Achilles tendon (GM-AT) complex. Methods Using a cross-sectional design, the GM-AT complex elasticity was compared using sonoelastography (SEG) in an HSD group and healthy controls during rest and maximal isometric plantar flexion contraction. Results The HSD group comprised 28 patients (26 women); mean ± SD age 28.7 ± 8.4 years, compared to 28 controls (26 women); 31.5 ± 8.7 years. During rest, greater elasticity was identified in HSD relative to controls at the GM-AT musculotendinous junction (strain ratio 2.05 ± 1.31 vs. 1.48 ± 0.49), mid-AT (3.60 ± 1.97 vs. 2.66 ± 1.00), and distal AT (4.57 ± 2.69 vs. 3.22 ± 1.94) (all p < 0.05). During contraction, no significant differences were found between groups at the GM-AT musculotendinous junction (3.40 ± 2.16 vs. 2.62 ± 1.07), mid AT (10.75 ± 5.29 vs. 8.49 ± 3.53), or distal AT (8.55 ± 5.39 vs. 8.83 ± 3.51) (all p > 0.05). No significant differences were found between groups in the GM strain ratio during rest (4.05 ± 1.43 vs. 3.62 ± 0.78), or contraction (4.23 ± 1.29 vs. 4.19 ± 1.31). Exploratory Receiver Operator Characteristics curve analysis suggested low sensitivity and specificity of the strain ratio for the diagnosis of HSD. Conclusion People with HSD have greater GM-AT complex elasticity. Although statistically significant group differences were identified, further research is required to establish the diagnostic, clinical, and research utility of strain ratio measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of stretching on the mechanical properties of the plantar fascia (PF) remain unclear. This study was performed to determine the effect of PF-specific stretching (PFSS) and Achilles tendon stretching (ATS) on the viscoelastic properties of the PF with shear wave elastography (SWE). METHODS We recruited 14 participants (8 men, 6 women) with no history of PF disorders or painful episodes. The mean age of the participants was 30.9 ± 4.8 (range, 25-41) years. All participants performed sustained PFSS (sPFSS) on one foot and intermittent PFSS (iPFSS) on the other foot. Two weeks later, all participants performed sustained ATS (sATS) on one foot and intermittent ATS (iATS) on the other foot. SWE measurements were performed immediately after each stretching. RESULTS The PF elasticity immediately before stretching ranged from 133.8 kPa to 144.7 kPa. The PF elasticity after stretching ranged from 158.9 kPa to 215.8 kPa. There was a significant increase in PF elasticity after sPFSS, iPFSS, sATS, and iATS (P < .01). The elasticity after sATS was greater than that after iATS (P = .03). In contrast, there were no differences in PF elasticity after stretching between sPFSS and iPFSS (P = .13), sPFSS and sATS (P = .17), or iPFSS and iATS (P = .50). CONCLUSIONS PF elasticity increased after stretching regardless of the frequency and type of PFSS and ATS. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level II, prospective cohort study.

Abstract
Overuse injuries of the rotator cuff, particularly of the supraspinatus tendon (SST), are highly prevalent and debilitating in work, sport, and daily activities. Despite the clinical significance of these injuries, there remains a large degree of uncertainty regarding the pathophysiology of injury, optimal methods of nonoperative and operative repair, and how to adequately assess tendon injury and healing. The tendon response to fatigue damage resulting from overuse is different from that of acute rupture and results in either an adaptive (healing) or a maladaptive (degenerative) response. Factors associated with the degenerative response include increasing age, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, biological sex (variable by tendon), diabetes mellitus, and excessive load post fatigue damage. After injury, the average healing rate of tendon is approximately 1% per day and may be significantly influenced by biologic sex (females have lower collagen synthesis rates) and excessive load after damage. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the gold standard in assessing acute tears as well as tendinopathic change in the SST, ultrasonography has proven to be a valuable tool to measure tendinopathic change in real time. Ultrasonography can determine multiple mechanical and structural parameters of the SST that are altered in fatigue loading. Thus, ultrasonography may be utilized to understand how these parameters change in response to SST overuse, and may aid in determining the activity level that places the SST at greater risk of rupture.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore changes in morphological and mechanical properties of lower-limb skeletal muscles in patients with diabetes with and without diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and seek to find a potential image indicator for monitoring the progress of DPN in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A total of 203 patients with T2DM, with and without DPN, were included in this study. Ultrasonography and ultrasound shear wave imaging (USWI) of the abductor hallux (AbH), tibialis anterior (TA), and peroneal longus (PER) muscles were performed for each subject, and the shear wave velocity (SWV) and cross-sectional area (CSA) of each AbH, TA, and PER were measured. The clinical factors influencing AbH_CSA and AbH_SWV were analyzed, and the risk factors for DPN complications were investigated. AbH_CSA and AbH_SWV in the T2DM group with DPN decreased significantly (P < 0.05), but no significant differences were found in the SWV and CSA of the TA and PER between the two groups. Toronto Clinical Scoring System (CSS) score and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were independent predictors of AbH_CSA and AbH_SWV. As AbH_SWV and AbH_CSA decreased, Toronto CSS score and HbA1c increased and incidence of DPN increased significantly. In conclusion, the AbH muscle of T2DM patients with DPN became smaller and softer, while its morphological and mechanical properties were associated with the clinical indicators related to the progression of DPN. Thus, they could be potential imaging indicators for monitoring the progress of DPN in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Background Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a method for carrying out a quantitative assessment of the mechanical properties of soft tissues in terms of stiffness. In stroke survivors, the paretic muscles may develop hypertonia due to both neural-mediated mechanisms and structural alterations with consequent muscular fibrous-fatty remodeling. Methods Fourteen adult patients with spastic dystonia following stroke were recruited. Muscle hypertonia was assessed using the modified Ashworth scale (MAS). Muscle activation was measured by surface electromyography (sEMG) with the selected muscle in shortened (spastic dystonia) and stretched (dynamic stretch reflex) positions. SWE was performed on a selected paretic muscle and on the contralateral non-paretic one to calculate shear wave velocities (SWV) along and across muscular fibers. The modified Heckmatt scale (MHS) pattern was also determined. All evaluations were performed shortly before BoNT-A injections (T0) and one month later (T1). Results All SWV on paretic muscles were higher than contralateral non-paretic ones (p < 0.01). After BoNT-A injection, a significant reduction in MAS (p = 0.0018), spastic dystonia (p = 0.0043), and longitudinal SWE measurements, both in shortened (p = 0.001) and in stretched muscular conditions (p = 0.0029), was observed. No significant changes in SWV on non-paretic muscles were observed. Higher SWV resulted along the direction of muscular fibers vs. across them (p = 0.001). No changes resulted from the MHS evaluations after BoNT-A. There was a positive correlation between MHS scores and SWV values while the muscle was in the shortened position, but not with spastic dystonia recorded by sEMG. Conclusions This is the first study evaluating the effect of BoNT-A on muscle hypertonia following stroke, assessed by both SWE and sEMG. These findings support SWE as a useful method to disclose intrinsic muscular remodeling, independently of the effect of spastic dystonia, in particular, while muscles were assessed in a neutral position. SWE measurements of muscle stiffness cannot tell apart neural-mediated and intrinsic muscle hypertonia. Interestingly, when sEMG activity is very limited, as in spastic muscles kept in a shortened position, SWE can provide a measurement of stiffness due almost completely to intrinsic muscle changes. Alongside sEMG, SWE could aid clinicians in the assessment of responses to treatments.

Abstract
PURPOSE This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the utility of ultrasound (US) elastography in the assessment of plantar fasciitis (PF). METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase, and Scopus and systemically reviewed clinical studies that used US elastography for imaging PF. The primary outcome was the comparison of plantar fascia stiffness between healthy controls and patients with PF, quantified using the weighted mean difference (WMD) and standardized mean difference (SMD). RESULTS Eleven studies were included in the final systematic review and meta-analysis. In six studies that employed shear wave elastography, patients with PF had a lower shear wave velocity, with a WMD of -1.772 m/s (95 % confidence interval [CI], -2.663 to -0.880) and an SMD of -1.239 m/s (95 % CI, -1.876 to -0.603), compared to those with asymptomatic heels. One study using the strain ratio showed that the WMD and SMD of patients with diseased heels vs healthy controls were -0.400 (95 % CI, -0.850 to 0.050) and -0.442 (95 % CI, -0.946 to 0.062), respectively. In six articles that use the color histogram of strain elastography, less stiffness was consistently reported in the diseased plantar fascia compared with healthy controls. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis showed that the plantar fasciae were less stiff in the PF group than in asymptomatic subjects. The diagnostic performance of US elastography (over B-mode) warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Purpose This study evaluated epidermal cyst elasticity using multiple parameters of strain elastography (SE) and shear wave elastography (SWE) and assessed the reproducibility of each parameter. Methods This retrospective study included 73 patients with epidermal cysts who underwent SE and SWE. SE scores were classified as 1-4 according to elasticity. The strain ratio was evaluated using the elasticity ratio of lesions and adjacent subcutaneous fat tissue. For SWE, the shear wave velocity (m/s), elasticity (kPa) according to the Young modulus, velocity ratio, and elasticity ratio were evaluated. All values were measured twice. The reproducibility of SE and SWE measurements was assessed. The relationships among SE and SWE measurements were evaluated. Results The strain ratio on SE images showed good reproducibility (intra-class correlation coefficient [ICC]=0.789), and SE scores showed substantial reproducibility (kappa=0.753 and kappa=0.758 for readers 1 and 2, respectively). Moderate reproducibility was found for shear wave velocity and elasticity (ICC=0.750 and ICC=0.648, respectively), as well as for the shear wave velocity of the reference tissue and velocity ratio (ICC=0.747 and ICC=0.713, respectively). All SE scores were positively correlated with the strain ratio (P<0.001). The strain ratio in the second SE session was significantly correlated with the elasticity ratio and velocity ratio in the first SWE session (r=0.245, P=0.037; r=0.243, P=0.038, respectively). Other variables were not correlated. Conclusion SE and SWE parameters of epidermal cysts showed moderate to good reproducibility. The strain ratio on SE showed good reproducibility and could provide relatively objective and consistent measurements of epidermal cyst elasticity.

Abstract
This scoping review of shear wave elastography (SWE) articles in musculoskeletal soft tissue and nerve research demonstrates methodological heterogeneity resulting from a lack of standardized data collection and reporting requirements. Seven literature databases were searched for original articles published in English from 2004-2020 that examine human skeletal muscles, tendons, and nerves in vivo. Although 5,868 records were initially identified, only 375 reports met inclusion criteria. Of the 375 articles, 260 examined 89 unique muscles, 94 examined 14 unique tendons, and 43 examined 8 unique nerves. Cohorts were often small (n = 11-20) and young (mean = 20-29 years), and participants were typically tested in the prone position. Regarding equipment, a variety of ultrasound systems (n = 11), ultrasound models (n = 18), and transducers (n = 19) were identified. Only 11% of articles contained information on the use of electromyography to confirm absence of muscle activity, and only 8% reported measurement depth. Since musculoskeletal soft tissue and nerve stiffness can vary significantly based on data collection methods, it is essential to standardize SWE collection and reporting procedures. This will allow SWE to serve as a valid and reproducible tool for assessing tissue pathology, disease progression, and response to intervention within a variety of musculoskeletal and nerve-related disorders.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this work is to study the sonoelastographic features of the common fibular nerve in healthy adult subjects.This is an observational cross-sectional study. Shear wave elastography was used to evaluate the common fibular nerve. Crosssectional area and stiffness were measured in kilopascal (kPa) and meters/second (m/s).The study included 82 common fibular nerves in 41 healthy adult subjects. The mean cross-sectional area of the common fibular nerve at the fibular head was 8.7 mm2. Positive correlation was noted between stiffness measurements between short and long axes by both methods. The mean stiffness of the common fibular nerve in the short axis was 22.5 kPa, and in the long axis (LA) was 35.4 kPa. Positive correlation was noted between height and stiffness measured by both methods in both axes by kPa. In m/s, the mean stiffness of the common fibular in the short axis was 2.6 m/s, and while in the LA was 3.4 m/s. Height showed positive correlation with both axes for stiff measurements in m\s. Weight showed positive correlation with stiffness measurements by m/s in the LA.The results obtained in our study could be a reference point for evaluating stiffness of the common fibular nerve in research involving different pathologies.

Abstract
Abstract
Background Sonoelastography (SE) is a new ultrasound (US)-based technique
able to assess tissue elasticity. Using conventional US, it is sometimes
difficult or even impossible to distinguish pathologic tissue because it often
presents with the same echogenicity as the surrounding healthy tissue. This
study aimed to evaluate SE findings in Achilles tendons of patients with axial
spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and to assess how these findings are associated with
disease-related parameters.
Material and Methods Sixty-four consecutive patients (37 men, 27 women;
mean age 39.7 years; range 20–65 years) with axSpA and 30 sex and
age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Disease activity was
evaluated using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI),
whereas functional capacity was evaluated using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis
Functional Index (BASFI). Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive
protein (CRP) and the Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC)
enthesitis index were recorded. All participants underwent an SE examination of
the Achilles tendon and measurement of the strain index (SI).
Results The mean right and left SI were significantly higher in axSpA
patients than in controls (2.96±0.94 vs. 1.90±0.45;
p<0.001; 2.95±0.95 vs. 1.92±0.48, p<0.001,
respectively). In axSpA patients, both right and left SI were significantly
correlated with the BASDAI, BASFI and SPARCC enthesitis indices, but not with
ESR or CRP.
Conclusion AxSpA patients had an increased SI compared with healthy
subjects and these values were associated with disease activity, functional
capacity and the enthesitis index. SE may be a useful tool for the evaluation of
Achilles tendons in patients with axSpA.

Abstract
Background Tourniquet is currently widely used in total knee arthroplasty to reduce intraoperative blood loss. The academic view of tourniquet application in TKA is now in dispute. Some scholars argue that tourniquet may cause quadriceps injury and bring extra side effects, so they oppose the application of tourniquet. Others find that tourniquet application has no significant adverse impact on TKA patients. Regarding its advantages in reducing intraoperative blood loss, they advocate the regular application of tourniquet in TKA. Quadriceps injury is considered the main cause of tourniquet side effects. There are now many high-quality trials about tourniquet application in TKA but few of them concentrate on quadriceps morphology and function. Methods A prospective, single-blind, randomized controlled trial will be adopted. The target sample is 130. Patients who meet the eligibility criteria will be randomly allocated to the tourniquet group and non-tourniquet group. The primary outcome is quadriceps thickness evaluated by ultrasound test. Secondary outcomes include quadriceps stiffness, rehabilitation outcomes, operation time, intraoperative and postoperative blood loss, blood transfusion rate, thigh circumference, VAS score, opioid consumption, d-dimer and C-reactive protein level in the serum, knee function score, postoperative satisfaction score, and complications. Discussion This proposed study will contribute to improve evidence of tourniquet application in total knee arthroplasty. This will be a high-quality single-blind randomized controlled trial with a sufficient sample size and strict study design. It will investigate the effects of tourniquet application especially on the morphology and function of quadriceps in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty and offer advice for tourniquet application in clinical practice. Abstract
BACKGROUND Strain or compression sonoelastography (CE) provides a colour-coded elastogram representing tissue elasticity by measuring tissue deformability after repeated probe compression. Elastographic ultrasound (EUS) is a valuable tool for screening diagnosis and follow-up of inflammatory, degenerative, benign and malignant neoplastic pathologies of skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves; help in targeted biopsy; monitor healing tendons after surgery or nerve stiffness changes during physiotherapy. OBJECTIVES To assess stiffness of normal tendons, muscles and nerve. To diagnose cellulitis, fasciitis, abscess, tendinopathy, myositis, muscle/tendon rupture/contusion and differentiate between benign and malignant soft tissue tumours. To derive elastic score (ES) and strain ratio (SR) in cases and controls. To correlate B-mode findings with CE. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective study on 50 healthy subjects between 25 and 30 years and 50 cases of diffuse and focal musculoskeletal pathologies was done using B-mode and CE over 2 years. Statistical analysis of distribution, mean, associations, sensitivity, specificity, area under Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUROC) for B-mode, ES, SR combined B-mode/CE and their comparison was done. RESULTS Significant association was noted between SR in muscles and tendons with sex. Significant correlation was noted between ES/SR with B-mode. CE and B-mode had 100% and 52.4% sensitivity respectively for diagnosing diffuse pathologies. For differentiating benign and malignant masses sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of B-mode was 71.43%, 86.36% and 82.76%; of SR was 71.43%, 90.91% and 86.21%; of Combined B-mode with CE was 100%, 90.91% and 93.1% respectively. Elastographic pattern had highest diagnostic accuracy and largest AUROC. CONCLUSION CE as a screening test had higher diagnostic accuracy, supporting need for standardizing it for clinical use in MSK. EUS being a widely available, fast and affordable modality, can aid follow up of chronic MSK pathologies, response to medication, physiotherapy and surgery and mitigate the need for MRI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quadriceps fat pad edema (QFPE) is one of the causes of anterior knee pain. Real-time elastosonography (RTE) has been increasingly used in musculoskeletal disorders. PURPOSE To evaluate the role of RTE in the diagnosis of QFPE. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 23 patients with QFPE on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (study group) were prospectively compared with 29 patients with normal MRI findings (control group) using RTE. On MRI, the thickness of the quadriceps fat pad (QFP), and on RTE, strain ratio (SR) of QFP were measured and compared between the two groups. RESULTS The study group contained 23 patients (12 men, 11 women; mean age = 41.6 ± 7.0 years) and the control group contained 29 patients (14 men, 15 women; mean age = 42.3 ± 6.1 years). No significant differences were found in terms of mean age and sex between the two groups (P = 0.70, P = 0.78, respectively). The median thicknesses of the QFPs were 8.10 mm and 6.75 mm in the study and control groups, respectively (P < 0.001). The median SR values of the study group and control group were found to be 63.20 and 6.24, respectively. The SR values were significantly higher in patients with QFPE (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION RTE may be an effective imaging method for evaluating QFPE.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle disorder characterized by reduced muscle mass, strength, and performance. Muscle ultrasound can be helpful in assessing muscle mass, quality, and architecture, and thus possibly useful for diagnosing or screening sarcopenia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of ultrasound assessment of tibialis anterior muscle in sarcopenia diagnosis. We included subjects undergoing total or partial hip replacement, comparing measures with a healthy control group. We measured the following parameters: tibialis anterior muscle thickness, echogenicity, architecture, stiffness, skeletal muscle index (SMI), hand grip strength, and sarcopenia related quality of life evaluated through the SarQoL questionnaire. We included 33 participants with a mean age of 54.97 ± 23.91 years. In the study group we found reduced tibialis anterior muscle thickness compared to the healthy control group (19.49 ± 4.92 vs. 28.94 ± 3.63 mm, p < 0.05) with significant correlation with SarQoL values (r = 0.80, p < 0.05), dynamometer hand strength (r = 0.72, p < 0.05) and SMI (r = 0.76, p < 0.05). Moreover, we found reduced stiffness (32.21 ± 12.31 vs. 27.07 ± 8.04 Kpa, p < 0.05). AUC measures of ROC curves were 0.89 predicting reduced muscle strength, and 0.97 predicting reduced SMI for tibialis anterior muscle thickness, while they were 0.73 and 0.85, respectively, for muscle stiffness. Our findings showed that ultrasound assessment of tibialis anterior muscle might be considered a reliable measurement tool to evaluate sarcopenia.

Abstract
Flexor tendon injuries are a major cause of lameness in performance horses and have considerable impact on equine welfare and the wider horse industry. Ageing and repetitive strain frequently cause varying degrees of tendon micro-damage prior to the recognition of clinical tendinopathy. Whilst B-mode ultrasonography is most commonly utilised for detection and monitoring of tendon lesions at the metacarpal/metatarsal level, the emphasis of recent research has focused on the identification of subclinical tendon damage in order to prevent further tendon injury and improve outcomes. The introduction of elastography, acoustoelastography and ultrasound tissue characterisation in the field of equine orthopaedics shows promising results and might find wider use in equine practice as clinical development continues. Based on the substantial number of research studies on tendon imaging published over the past decade this literature review aims to examine the currently used ultrasonographic imaging techniques and their limitations, and to introduce and critically appraise new modalities that could potentially change the clinical approach to equine flexor tendon imaging.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES The objective of the study was to assess the diagnostic efficiency of shear wave elastography in the grading of meniscal degeneration compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty patients were included in the study (who had bilateral knee MRI). Tissue elasticity was measured in the coronal plane from the meniscus body in kilopascal. Nonparametric testing (Mann-Whitney U) was utilized to assess the differences between mean elasticity of the meniscus tissue, gender. The inter-intraobserver agreement was determined by the intraclass correlation coefficient. The correlations between the mean elasticity of the meniscus versus age, height, and body mass index were calculated via the "Pearson Correlation Coefficient Test." The relationship between MRI meniscal degeneration grading and elastography elasticity module was determined via the "Spearman Correlation Test." A p value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS İnter-intraobserver intraclass correlation coefficient of the lateral and medial meniscus mean stiffness values were good or excellent (>0.8). A statistically significant increase in stiffness of meniscus tissue was observed with an increase in age (p = 0.003 for medial menisci, 0.006 for lateral menisci). Tissue stiffness was higher in the medial meniscus than the lateral meniscus (p < 0.001). A positive correlation was observed between the MRI meniscal degeneration grade and tissue stiffness (p < 0.05). Additionally, mean stiffness values from lateral and medial menisci were higher in the group with degeneration (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Meniscus stiffness is increased with aging. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between meniscal stiffness and degeneration grading in MRI.

Abstract
Backgroud Baseball players are subjected to repeated loads on the supraspinatus and long head biceps tendon from youth, and repetitive pitching motions can cause shoulder injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate changes caused by pitching in the supraspinatus muscle-tendon, long head of the bicep tendon (LHBT), and shoulder range of motion (ROM) and to verify their recovery over time in youth baseball players. Methods Fifteen youth baseball players (mean age, 11.5 ± 1.3 years) were enrolled. The thicknesses of the supraspinatus tendon and LHBT and the strain ratios (SRs) of supraspinatus muscle and tendon were measured by sonoelastography. ROMs of shoulder joints (abduction, external rotation at 90° of abduction [ABER], and internal rotations at 90° of abduction [ABIR]) and horizontal adduction (HA) were measured using a goniometer. All measurements were performed on the throwing shoulders before and immediately after pitching (mean pitch count, 78.3 ± 13.3) and at 30 minutes, 24 hours, and 72 hours after pitching. Results The thickness of supraspinatus tendon (6.64–6.27 mm, p = 0.026) and that of LHBT (2.56–2.26 mm, p = 0.021) significantly decreased immediately after pitching. The SRs of supraspinatus muscle tended to decrease, whereas SRs of supraspinatus tendon tended to increase immediately after pitching. ABER increased (119.7°–127.3°, p = 0.001) and HA decreased (34.7°–29.3°, p = 0.023) immediately after pitching. All immediate changes recovered 72 hours after pitching. Conclusions The immediate effects of pitching on the supraspinatus muscle-tendon, LHBT, and shoulder ROM in youth baseball players were confirmed in the current study. These changes were recovered to pre-pitch levels 72 hours after pitching. Therefore, we recommend that youth baseball players should rest for three days after pitching to minimize the risk of shoulder injury.

Objective To prospectively investigate the feasibility of shear wave elastography (SWE) as a new quantitative and objective method for evaluating the stiffness of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscle during passive stretching in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Materials and Methods SWE of the GM muscle was performed in 28 patients with PD [13 female and 15 male; mean age ± standard deviation (SD): 63.0 ± 8.5 years] and 12 healthy controls (5 female and 7 male; mean age ± SD: 59.3 ± 6.4 years) during passive ankle rotation. A Young's modulus-ankle angle curve was constructed. The GM slack angle and baseline Young's modulus (E0) were compared between the markedly symptomatic and mildly symptomatic sides of patients with PD, and healthy controls. Additionally, the correlation between the GM slack angle and the severity of rigidity, and the observer reproducibility of SWE in determining the GM slack angle were evaluated. Results The GM slack angle was smaller on both the markedly and mildly symptomatic sides in patients with PD than in healthy controls (mean ± SD of −29.13° ± 3.79° and −25.65° ± 3.39°, respectively, vs. −21.22° ± 3.52°; p < 0.001 and p = 0.006, respectively). Additionally, in patients with PD, the GM slack angle on the markedly symptomatic side was smaller than that on the mildly symptomatic side (p = 0.003). The E0 value was lower on both the markedly and mildly symptomatic sides in patients with PD than in healthy controls (mean ± SD of 10.11 ± 2.85 kPa and 10.08 ± 1.88 kPa, respectively, vs. 12.23 ± 1.02 kPa; p = 0.012 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, no significant difference was found between the markedly and mildly symptomatic sides in patients with PD (p = 0.634). A negative linear relationship was observed between the GM slack angle and lower limb rigidity score on the markedly symptomatic side in patients with PD (r = −0.719; p < 0.001). The intraclass correlation coefficients for observer reproducibility of SWE ranged from 0.880 to 0.951. Conclusion The slack angle determined by SWE may be a useful quantitative and reproducible method for evaluating muscle stiffness in patients with PD.

Abstract
Background Acupuncture is effective for reducing the symptoms of neck pain (NP). However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Based on evaluating the efficacy of two acupuncture prescriptions for treating NP, this study aims to investigate the potential central mechanism of acupuncture treatment for NP by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods This is a randomized controlled trial; 86 patients will be randomly assigned into two acupuncture treatment groups at a ratio of 1:1. The whole study period includes 2 weeks baseline, 2 weeks treatments, and 12 weeks follow-up (4 and 12 weeks after treatment). The pain severity, the neck disability index, the cervical range of motion, and the pressure pain threshold, etc., will be used to evaluate the clinical efficacy of two acupuncture prescriptions for NP treatment. The MRI scans will be performed to detect cerebral activity changes of 20 patients in each group. The clinical data and MRI data will be analyzed, respectively. Pearson correlation coefficient will be used to evaluate the association between changes of cerebral activity features and improvement of clinical symptoms. Discussion The results will provide further evidence for the clinical application of acupuncture in the treatment of NP. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2000040930. Abstract
The aim of the study is to evaluate the reliability of shear wave elastography to assess the anterior and middle scalene muscles in healthy adult subjects.The study included 60 scalene muscles in 15 healthy subjects. High-resolution ultrasound and shear wave elastography were used to evaluate the anterior scalene and the middle scalene muscles. Stiffness values were measured.The mean shear elastic modulus showed the following values, right anterior scalene muscle 18.83 ± 5.32 kPa, left anterior scalene muscle 21.71 ± 4.8 kPa, right middle scalene muscle 12.84 ± 5.2 kPa, left middle scalene muscle 19.76 ± 5.30 kPa. Positive correlation was noted between the left middle scalene muscle and body mass index (P = .004). No difference in elasticity was noted between the right and left anterior scalene muscles; however, significant difference was noted between the right and left middle scalene muscles (P = .002).The results obtained in our study could be a reference point for future research considering different scalene muscle pathologies.

Abstract
Sports Imaging has dramatically increased in the past decade with increasing number of adolescents, young and middle-aged adults participating in non-competitive/hobby sports. Therefore, sports injuries are no longer confined to elite athletes. Furthermore, newer forms of sports such as mountain climbing, pickle ball and curling etc. are gaining popularity. Majority of the injuries in sports medicine are from musculoskeletal trauma. Therefore, it is imperative that the musculoskeletal radiologist becomes familiar with various sports related injury patterns as these are commonly encountered in daily practice. This update aims to briefly encapsulate the major aspects of sports imaging. It includes the imaging manifestations of various types of musculoskeletal injuries on different modalities (commonly US and MRI) and briefly mentions the various image guided interventions, performed both on the sports field and in the hospital setting.

Abstract
In the recent years, prolotherapy is increasingly being used in the field of musculoskeletal medicine. However, few studies have investigated its effectiveness in plantar fasciitis (PF). The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided dextrose prolotherapy with radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of chronic PF. This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 59 patients with chronic PF. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups receiving three sessions of radial ESWT (29 patients) vs. two sessions of ultrasound-guided intrafascial 2 cc dextrose 20% injection (30 patients). The following outcome measures were assessed before and then six weeks and 12 weeks after the treatments: pain intensity by visual analog scale (VAS), daily life and exercise activities by Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM), and the plantar fascia thickness by ultrasonographic imaging. The VAS and FAAM scales showed significant improvements of pain and function in both study groups 6 weeks and 12 weeks after the treatments. A significant reduction was noted for plantar fascia thickness at these intervals (all p < .05). The inter-group comparison revealed that except for the FAAM-sport subscale which favored ESWT, the interaction effects of group and time were not significant for other outcome measures. Dextrose prolotherapy has comparable efficacy to radial ESWT in reducing pain, daily-life functional limitation, and plantar fascia thickness in patients with PF. No serious adverse effects were observed in either group. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level I, randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
Ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) is a noninvasive, reliable and reproducible method, used for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of tissues. The aim of this study was to compare muscle elasticity between the healthy and the involved sides in children with neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) using the elastography tool and to assess whether the difference was correlated with the Mallet grading system. We repeatedly measured the shear modulus coefficient of several muscles around the shoulder in stretched or passively relaxed positions on 14 patients. We evaluated the abductor muscles (supraspinatus and deltoid), the infraspinatus, the pectoralis major and the latissimus dorsi. We found a mean shear modulus significantly higher in most studied muscles in the pathologic side (P < 0.001), especially in the stretched position (P < 0.001). Moreover, the shear modulus increases with the degradation of the Mallet score for the abduction and external rotation tasks. SWE seems to be a reliable and reproducible tool to assess muscle elasticity in NBPP.

Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate plantar fasciae of healthy subjects and patients with plantar fasciitis by shear wave velocity (SWV) and stiffness with correlation to B-Mode and color Doppler ultrasonography (CDUS) and to establish cut-off values. Methods: This observational study was conducted with the approval of the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) of our institution. 108 unilateral plantar fasciae were evaluated by including 87 consecutive patients (mean age 51.7; range: 29–82) (66 women and 21 men) with plantar fasciitis and 21 asymptomatic age matched healthy volunteers (mean age 47.3; range: 32–58) (15 women and 6 men). All patients were prospectively imaged between July 2018 and March 2019. B-mode US was used to measure thickness and CDUS to grade vascularity. SWE measurements were repeated 3 times and mean was used for statistical analysis. Results: Mean SWV value in healthy subjects was 6.94 m/s and in patients 4.98 m/s with a mean stiffness value of 152.88 kPa and 93.54 kPa respectively (p < 0.001). For SWV a cut-off value of 6.16 m/s had a specificity of 80.95% and sensitivity of 79.31%. For stiffness a cut-off value of 125.57 kPa had a specificity of 80.95% and sensitivity of 80.46%. No correlation to CDUS was found. The mean thickness of healthy fascias was 3.3 mm (range 2.4–3.9) compared to 6.1 mm (range 2.0–22.0) in plantar fasciitis (p < 0.001) with no correlation to SWV or to stiffness (r² = 0.02, p = 0.06). Conclusion: SWE allows quantitative assessment of plantar fascia stiffness, which decreases in patients with plantar fasciitis. No correlation to the thickness of the plantar fascia was found, therefore it represents an independent factor for the diagnosis of plantar fasciitis and could be helpful in addition to thickness measurement in unclear cases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the ability of shear wave elastography to measure the stiffness of the knee menisci in healthy adults. METHODS This observational cross-sectional study evaluated knee joints in healthy adults. Shear wave elastography was used to evaluate the anterior horn of the medial menisci bilaterally. The correlations between the mean elasticity bilaterally and age, weight, height and body mass index (BMI) were calculated using Pearson's correlation coefficient test. RESULTS A total of 34 knee joints in 17 healthy subjects were evaluated. The mean ± SD shear elastic modulus of the anterior horn of the right medial meniscus was 24.86 ± 6.35 kPa and of the anterior horn of the left medial meniscus was 23.86 ± 4.49 kPa. A significant inverse correlation was observed between the right medial meniscus elasticity and height. Other demographic factors showed no significant relationship to the anterior horn of the right medial meniscus elasticity. A significant inverse correlation was observed between the anterior horn of the left medial meniscus elasticity and age, while a significant positive correlation was observed between left medial meniscus elasticity and BMI. CONCLUSION These preliminary results suggest that shear wave elastography could be a potential tool to aid in studying the stiffness of the knee menisci.

Abstract
Objective This study was performed to examine the sonoelastographic features of the radial nerve in healthy subjects. Methods In this observational cross-sectional study, shear wave elastography was used to evaluate the radial nerve. The cross-sectional area and stiffness were measured. Results The study included 37 nerves in 20 healthy adult subjects. The mean cross-sectional area of the radial nerve at the arm was 6.1 mm2. The mean stiffness of the radial nerve in the short axis was 30.3 kPa, and that in the long axis was 34.9 kPa. The elasticity measurements were significantly different between the long axis and short axis. Conclusion The elastic modulus of the radial nerve was studied in healthy subjects and can serve as a reference for future assessment of different radial nerve pathologies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the diagnostic performance between strain elastography and shear wave elastography (SWE) for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS Between July 2018 and June 2019, 66 consecutive patients with 95 imaged wrists underwent wrist ultrasound, including grayscale ultrasound, strain elastography, and SWE, because of the suspicion of CTS. During wrist ultrasound, the cross-sectional area (CSA), strain ratio, elasticity, and shear wave velocity of each median nerve were measured at the proximal carpal bone level (scaphoid to pisiform). The variables were compared between the normal and CTS groups by using the independent t test, and subgroup analyses were performed using one-way analysis of variance. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of each variable. RESULTS CSA, elasticity, and shear wave velocity showed significant intergroup differences (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, and P = 0.002, respectively). However, the strain ratio showed no statistically significant intergroup difference (P = 0.639). In the subgroup analyses, elasticity showed significantly higher values in the severe group than in the mild and moderate groups (P < 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively). Other parameters showed no significant differences among the different subgroups. The areas under the ROC curve were 0.823 for CSA, 0.772 for elasticity, and 0.779 for shear wave velocity. The differences in the areas under the ROC curve among CSA, elasticity, and shear wave velocity were not statistically significant (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS SWE has a good diagnostic value in CTS. In particular, elasticity can discriminate the severe group from the other groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aim to determine a reference data set for normal medial collateral ligament (MCL) stiffness values using shear wave elastography (SWE). METHODS Quantitative stiffness of the MCL was measured at three levels: the proximal (MCL area from the level of the medial meniscus to the level of the femoral attachment), the middle (MCL area at the level of the medial meniscus), and the distal (MCL area from the level of the medial meniscus to the level of the tibial attachment) segments of the MCL at a knee position of 0°. RESULTS A total of 60 MCL of 30 healthy volunteers (15 female, 15 male) were examined. The mean stiffness values of the proximal, middle, and distal MCL for observer 1 were 32.25 ± 6.44, 34.25 ± 6.84, and 35.47 ± 6.98, respectively. The mean stiffness values of the proximal, middle, and distal MCL for observer 2 were 33.56 ± 6.76, 35.44 ± 6.91, and 36.32 ± 7.04, respectively. CONCLUSION SWE has a strong potential to be a method of choice for evaluating MCL stiffness. Our study participants were healthy volunteers and the data can be used as reference data for future studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the normal stiffness values of temporomandibular joint disc (TMJ) and masseter muscle by shear wave elastography (SWE) in a healthy adult population. This may be helpful in diagnosing and understanding the mechanism of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS This prospective study evaluated a total of 160 healthy adult volunteers (77 males, 83 females). The stiffness values of anterior, intermediate and posterior parts of the TMJ disc and masseter muscle were measured. Study cohort was classified into four groups based on age. Additionally, we investigated the changes in mean shear wave elasticity (kPa) and shear wave velocity(m/s) values of disc parts and masseter muscle in closed and open mouth positions, and the correlation of these SWE values with age and gender. RESULTS Mean stiffness values of the disc were 37.02 ± 23.75 kPa and 3.28 ± 1.09 m/s in the anterior part, 30.47 ± 18.89 kPa and 2.97 ± 1.04 m/s in the intermediate part, 22.61 ± 13.97 kPa and 2.55 ± 0.88 m/s in the posterior part. Stiffness values showed significant decrease in the posterior part compared to the rest of the disc both in males and females. No significant differences in mean stiffness values of masseter muscle related to mouth position, age or gender. CONCLUSION This study provides the normative quantitative elasticity values of disc and masseter muscle which could be a reference point for upcoming studies. Disc elasticity values are higher in women than men. Maybe this is one of the reason why TMD is more common in women. TMJ disc stiffness was significantly lower in the posterior part. SWE is a useful imaging method that can be used with routine ultrasonography in evaluation of the TMJ disc and masticatory muscles .

Abstract
The treatment of Achilles tendinitis from conservative to minimally invasive to surgery gives patients a wide range of treatment options for this common pathology. The use and role of biologics to augment this treatment is emerging. The use of biologics may enhance the healing potential of the Achilles tendon when conservative treatment fails. There are a handful of biologics being investigated to obtain if improved outcomes can be maximized.

Abstract
Real-time elastosonography (RTE) is a recently described, non-invasive, ultrasonographic technique developed to assess tissue elasticity. The main aim of this study was to investigate the ultrasonographic and elastosonographic appearance of the common calcaneal tendon (CCT) in an ovine model, and to monitor the progression of tendon healing after an experimentally-induced tendinopathy. Sound tendons were initially evaluated (T0) with a caliper and by a single operator with ultrasound. Ultrasonographic and elastosonographic images were then acquired. Subsequently, ultrasound-guided tendon lesions were induced by injecting 500 IU of Type IA collagenases proximally to the calcaneal tuberosity. Caliper measurement, ultrasonography and elastosonography were then repeated at 15 (T1), 30 (T2) and 60 (T3) days. Clinically measured width of the tendon, ultrasonographic thickness and width and percentage of hard (Elx-t%hrd) and soft (Elx-t%sft) tissue were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed on the data collected; statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) revealed good (0.68) repeatability of elastosonographic evaluation of the CCT. The tendon width was significantly increased when comparing T0 with T1–2 and decreased when comparing T1–2 with T3. Ultrasound-assessed thickness was significantly increased between T0–T1 and decreased between T1-T2–3. Elx-t%hrd was significantly decreased at T1–2–3 and Elx-t%sft was significantly increased at T1–2–3. In conclusion, the ovine CCT is a highly stiff structure that undergoes a severe loss of stiffness during the healing process. Thickness and width of the tendon increased during the first 30 days and then reduced progressively along the subsequent 30 days. Ultrasonographic appearance of the tendon remained severely abnormal and the tendon showed severely reduced elastic proprieties 60 days after lesion induction.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to study sonoelastographic features of thesartorius muscle, and its relation to the demographic factors.The study included 70 muscles in 35 healthy subjects. High-resolution ultrasound and shearwave elastography were used to evaluate the sartorius muscle. Stiffness values were measured.The mean shear elastic modulus of the sartorius muscle was 21.96 ± 5.1 kPa. Demographic factors showed no relation to the elastic modulus of the left sartorius muscle. Positive statistical correlation was noted between the elastic modulus of the right sartorius muscle, weight, and body mass index.Our results could be a reference point for evaluating sartorius muscle stiffness in future research considering different pathologies.

Abstract
Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) techniques such as pixel intensity, ultrasound strain, and shear wave elastography have made it possible to identify the echogenicity (brightness) and mechanical properties (stiffness) of normal and pathological tissues. These techniques can be utilized as an alternative diagnosis tool to assess post stroke spasticity. Current clinical assessment methods include the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and the Modified Tardieu Scale (MTS), which can result in inconsistencies due to their subjective nature. QUS provides robust approaches to assessing muscle stiffness associated with post stroke spasticity. Computer-aided pixel count quantifies tissue echogenicity in grayscale image. A strain ratio in ultrasound strain imaging compares the stiffness and movement (lengthening or shortening) of a spastic muscle with nonspecific muscle. In addition, shear wave elastography provides the shear wave velocity of an affected muscle that directly associated with the muscle stiffness before and after treatment for spasticity. This article reviews the theory behind these aforementioned concepts and discuss the relations between QUS and skeletal muscles in post stroke spasticity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sonoelastography (SEL) is widely used for assessing tissue stiffness and pathophysiology. It has also been used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, the current criteria to diagnose CTS in SEL are diverse. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature and assess the diagnostic value of SEL for CTS. METHODS A literature review was performed using MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, and the Cochrane Collaboration Library for primary research articles using the keywords sonoelastography and carpal tunnel syndrome. Data related to diagnostic and cutoff value were extracted. Bias assessment was performed. RESULTS A total of 121 publications were reviewed. Nineteen primary case series met the inclusion criteria and were selected for full analysis. Different diagnostic approaches were identified, with units/expressions including kilopascals, conduct velocity, and strain ratio. The kilopascals and conduct velocity were measured using shear wave elastography, whereas strain ratio was calculated by relative compression quantification. A mean shear modulus cutoff value from 38.25 to 86 kPa and an acoustic radiation force impulse cutoff value of 3.0 to 3.23 m/s were used to diagnose CTS. Eight articles reported strain ratio between the median nerve and nearby tissues with diverse results due to different reference points. The other 3 additional diagnostic values were reported. CONCLUSIONS Sonoelastography is a useful noninvasive and promising modality to diagnose CTS. It may reflect both the condition of soft tissue scarring and quantitative values for CTS and median nerve stiffness. A diversity of examination values was found in different modalities. A high level of evidence was absent.
