Basic principles of magnetic resonance imaging

We have come full circle from spinning quarks to 3D medical images. The bulk of MRI is now performed using slice-selective gradients, during which RF energy is applied to excite the hydrogen nuclei. By stepping a phase-encoding gradient during each TR and using a frequency-encoding gradient as the data are sampled, the 3D human object can be reduced to many individual points or voxels. By acquiring multiple slices at once, the time efficiency of imaging can be vastly improved. Many newer strategies use variations of this technique to acquire multiple lines of data during a single echo, enshrining spin warp imaging as the most important method of signal acquisition for MRI.

Low-field magnetic resonance imaging of the equine tarsus: normal anatomy

The objective of this study was to define the normal gross anatomic appearance of the adult equine tarsus on a low-field magnetic resonance (MR) image. Six radiographically normal, adult, equine tarsal cadavers were utilized. Using a scanner with a 0.064 Tesla magnet, images were acquired in the sagittal, transverse and dorsal planes for T1-weighted and the sagittal plane for T2-weighted imaging sequences. Anatomic structures on the MR images were identified and compared with cryosections of the imaged limbs. Optimal image planes were identified for the evaluation of articular cartilage, subchondral bone, flexor and extensor tendons, tarsal ligaments, and synovial structures. MR images provide a thorough evaluation of the anatomic relationships of the structures of the equine tarsus.

Low-field magnetic resonance imaging of the canine stifle joint: normal anatomy

Low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on the stifle joints of four normal adult mongrel dogs using a 0.064 Tesla scanner. Markers were placed on each stifle joint to serve as reference points for comparing gross sections with the images. A T1-weighted sequence was used to image one stifle joint on each dog in the sagittal plane and the other stifle joint in the dorsal plane. The dogs were euthanized immediately following MRI and the stifle joints frozen intact. Each stifle joint was then embedded in paraffin, again frozen, and sectioned using the markers as reference points. On T1-weighted images, synovial fluid had low signal intensity (dark) compared to the infrapatellar fat pad which had a high signal intensity (bright). Articular cartilage was visualized as an intermediate bright signal and was separated from trabecular bone by a dark line representing subchondral bone. Menisci, fibrous joint capsule, and ligamentous structures appeared dark. In the true sagittal plane, the entire caudal cruciate ligament was often seen within one image slice. The patella was visualized as an intermediate bright signal (trabecular bone) surrounded by a low intensity signal (cortical bone). The trochlea and the intercondylar notch were difficult areas to analyze due to signal volume averaging of the curved surface of these areas and the presence of several types of tissues.

Low-field versus high-field MR imaging of the knee: a comparison of signal behaviour and diagnostic performance

A prospective study was undertaken to compare MR imaging of the knee obtained with low-field and high-field systems. In 10 subjects, MR imaging of the knee was performed on a 0.2 T permanent magnet and on a 1.5 T superconductive system. Similar spin echo (SE) and 3D-FISP (3D Fourier transform with steady state precession) acquisitions were obtained. Comparative image analysis was performed independently by four radiologists. Results show that the image quality and diagnostic performance delivered by state-of-the-art 0.2 T and 1.5 T systems is equivalent. Advantages of the 1.5 T system included: better signal-to-noise ratio, shorter scan times, better visualization of asymptomatic grade 1 meniscal degeneration on SE images. Advantages of 0.2 T images were: decreased chemical shift, susceptibility and flow artifacts, improved evaluation of subchondral bone on 3D-FISP images, slightly better patient tolerance. We conclude that, for MR imaging of the knee, a low-field system is a cost-effective alternative to more expensive superconducting units.

Two-gradient-echo, two-dimensional, Fourier transform multisection imaging: comparison with spin-echo imaging

A multisection, two-dimensional, Fourier transform, double-gradient-echo magnetic resonance imaging sequence with partial flip-angle excitation and section doubling by radiofrequency encoding approximately doubles the signal-to-noise ratio obtainable from a conventional spin-echo sequence at low field strength, while maintaining essentially equivalent contrast.

Slice thickness reduction by partial overlapping presaturation

We present a new approach to slice thickness reduction that does not require strengthening the selection gradient or increasing the RF pulse duration. The basis of the approach is to employ a thick slice and suppress a portion of its width, thereby forming a thin slice. Two distinct implementations of the technique are introduced and demonstrated by imaging slice profiles in a phantom and generating images of a volunteer's knee.

Low-field 3-DFT MRI: conceptual, analytical, and experimental aspects

Three-dimensional Fourier transform (3-DFT) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers advantages in terms of signal-to-noise (S/N) per unit of time for the case where a large number of slices is desired. This advantage is enhanced when the relaxation time, T(1 ), is short. Because time limitations in 3-DFT imaging force the use of short time intervals, TR, between excitations of a slice, lesion contrast is often undesirable at mid-and high-field strength even when the S/N is good. At low fields, where T(1) values are short, high S/N and contrast can both be achieved with 3-DFT MR images. The conceptual and analytical aspects of low-field 3-DFT MRI are presented and demonstrated at 640 G.
