Effects of a thorstensson fatiguing protocol on isometric and isokinetic performance

OBJECTIVE: Having participants perform 50 maximal isokinetic contractions, as introduced by Thorstensson and Karlsson (1976), is to this day one of the most commonly used fatigue protocols. Purpose: To determine to what extent a Thorstensson fatiguing protocol affects isokinetic and isometric performance characteristics. METHODS: Twenty-five college-aged men performed an isokinetic fatigue protocol consisting of 50 maximal elbow flexions at a moderate speed (180∘⋅s-1). Pre- and post-tests were used to calculate fatigue indices (FI%) for the following variables: isometric and isokinetic peak torque (PT), isometric rate of torque development (RTD), and maximum acceleration (ACCmax). RESULTS: Each of the four dependent variables significantly decreased with fatigue (each demonstrated p< 0.001), but not of the same magnitude. Isometric PT FI (-18.7%) was significantly less than isokinetic PT FI (-45.1%, p⩽ 0.001) and ACCmax FI (-26.3%) was significantly less than isometric RTD FI (-54.9%, p⩽ 0.001). There was a significant positive relationship between isometric and isokinetic PT FI% (r= 0.60, p< 0.002) as well as between isometric PT FI% and RTD FI% (r= 0.40, p< 0.046). There was no significant relationship observed between RTD FI% and ACCmax FI% nor between isokinetic PT FI% and ACCmax FI%. CONCLUSIONS: This investigation observed different patterns of response in maximal strength between isometric and isokinetic assessments following a isokinetic fatigue protocol. Additionally, the ability to rapidly generate strength and velocity had significantly different responses to fatigue between isometric and dynamic assessments. Due to these different responses, we recommend that assessments of fatigue at least include the same testing modality as the modality of the fatigue protocol.

Recovery and Fatigue Behavior of Forearm Muscles during a Repetitive Power Grip Gesture in Racing Motorcycle Riders

Despite a reduction in the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC_isom) observed systematically in intermittent fatigue protocols (IFP), decrements of the median frequency, assessed by surface electromyography (sEMG), has not been consistently verified. This study aimed to determine whether recovery periods of 60 s were too long to induce a reduction in the normalized median frequency (MF_EMG) of the flexor digitorum superficialis and carpi radialis muscles. Twenty-one road racing motorcycle riders performed an IFP that simulated the posture and braking gesture on a motorcycle. The MVC_isom was reduced by 53% (p < 0.001). A positive and significant relationship (p < 0.005) was found between MF_EMG and duration of the fatiguing task when 5 s contractions at 30% MVC_isom were interspersed by 5 s recovery in both muscles. In contrast, no relationship was found (p > 0.133) when 10 s contractions at 50% MVC were interspersed by 1 min recovery. Comparative analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirmed a decrement of MF_EMG in the IFP at 30% MVC_isom including short recovery periods with a duty cycle of 100% (5 s/5 s = 1), whereas no differences were observed in the IFP at 50% MVC_isom and longer recovery periods, with a duty cycle of 16%. These findings show that recovery periods during IFP are more relevant than the intensity of MVC_isom. Thus, we recommend the use of short recovery periods between 5 and 10 s after submaximal muscle contractions for specific forearm muscle training and testing purposes in motorcycle riders.

Different plantar flexors neuromuscular and mechanical characteristics depending on the preferred running form

Two main types of endurance runners have been identified: aerial runners (AER), who have a larger flight time, and terrestrial runners (TER), who have a longer ground contact time. The purpose of this study was to assess the neuromuscular characteristics of plantar flexors between AER and TER runners. Twenty-four well-trained runners participated in the experiment. They were classified either in a TER or AER group according to the Volodalen® scale. Plantar flexors' maximal rate of force development (RFD) and maximal voluntary contraction force (MVC) were assessed. Percutaneous electrical stimulation was delivered to the posterior tibial nerve to evoke maximal M-waves and H-reflexes of the triceps surae muscles. These responses, as well as voluntary activation, muscle potentiation, and V-waves, were recorded by superimposing stimulations to MVCs. RFD was significantly higher in AER than in TER, while MVC remained unchanged. This was accompanied by higher myoelectrical activity recorded in the soleus muscle. While M-waves and other parameters remained unchanged, maximal H-reflex was significantly higher in AER than in TER, still in soleus only. The present study raised the possibility of different plantar flexors' neuromuscular characteristics according to running profile. These differences seemed to be focused on the soleus rather than on the gastrocnemii.

Impaired central drive to plantarflexors and minimal ankle proprioceptive deficit in people with multiple sclerosis

BACKGROUND

A common and disruptive symptom of multiple sclerosis is difficulty in walking. Deficits in ankle proprioception and in plantarflexor muscle function may contribute to these mobility issues. In this study, ankle proprioceptive ability and plantarflexor performance of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) were compared to healthy controls to determine whether multiple sclerosis causes impairments in these systems.

METHODS

PwMS (n = 30, median EDSS 4.0, IQR 2) were compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 30) across tests of ankle proprioception and plantarflexor muscle performance. Proprioceptive tests: detection of passive movement, reaction time and ankle joint position sense. Plantarflexor performance: strength, fatigue, recovery and voluntary activation (level of neural drive) of the plantarflexor muscles, assessed through brief and sustained fatiguing (2 min) isometric maximal voluntary contractions with nerve stimulation to evoke superimposed and resting muscle twitches.

RESULTS

PwMS had unimpaired movement detection and joint position sense but had a slower reaction time to respond with plantarflexion to an imposed ankle movement (between group difference = 0.11 [95% CI; 0.05 to 0.17] s). During brief, maximal contractions PwMS produced lower torque (difference = -25.1 [-42.0 to -8.2] Nm) with reduced voluntary activation (difference = -14.6 [-25.1 to -4.1]%) but no impairment of the muscle itself (resting twitch torque difference = 0.3 [-2.8 to 2.2] Nm). At the end of the fatiguing contraction, neural drive decreased for PwMS (-19.5 [-27.1 to -11.9]%, p <0.0001) but not for controls (-2.5 [-6.9 to 1.8]%, p = 0.242). Fatigue did not affect the resting twitch size for controls (-1.3 [-2.7 to -0.03] Nm, p = 0.134) or PwMS (-0.1 [-1.1 to 1.0] Nm, p = 0.90).

CONCLUSIONS

PwMS showed no deficit in their ability to sense ankle position or imposed movements but were slow when a motor response was required. Their plantarflexor muscles produced similar torque with electrical stimulation but voluntary strength was impaired.  Both groups experienced overall fatigue following the 2-minute maximal voluntary contraction but PwMS also had significantly reduced neural drive indicating central fatigue. PwMS showed mainly central deficits in motor output at the ankle with little impairment of proprioceptive acuity.

Differential contributions of fatigue-induced strength loss and slowing of angular velocity to power loss following repeated maximal shortening contractions

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between fatigue-induced reductions in isometric torque and isotonic power and to quantify the extent to which the decreases in angular velocity and dynamic torque can explain the power loss immediately following an isotonic fatiguing task and throughout recovery in seven young males and six young females. All measurements were performed with both legs. For dorsiflexion, fatigue-related time-course changes in isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque, angular velocity, dynamic torque, and power production following repeated maximal isotonic contractions (load: 20% MVC) were investigated before, immediately after, and 1, 2, 5 and 10 min after a fatiguing task. There were no relationships between the fatigue-related reductions in isometric MVC torque and peak power at any timepoint, suggesting that fatigue-induced reductions in isometric MVC torque does not entirely reflect fatigue-induced changes in dynamic performance. The relative contribution of fatigue-related reduction in dynamic torque on power loss was greater immediately following the task, and lower throughout recovery than the corresponding decrease in angular velocity. Thus, power loss immediately following the task was more strongly related to the decline in dynamic torque; however, this relationship shifted throughout recovery to a greater dependence on slowing of angular velocity for power loss.

The impact of joint angle and movement velocity on sex differences in the functional hamstring/quadriceps ratio

BACKGROUND

Females are two to eight times more likely to suffer a non-contact injury compared with males thus the purpose of this study was to explore the influence of joint angle and movement velocity on sex differences in the functional hamstring to quadriceps ratio (H/Q_FUNC).

METHODS

Isokinetic concentric and eccentric torque were determined in 110 participants (55 males and 55 females) through a 90° range of movement at 60, 120, and 240°/s. Testing was performed with the hip flexed at 10°. The H/Q_FUNC was determined at three specific joint angles (15, 30 and 45° flexion) and where peak torque occurred for concentric knee extension.

RESULTS

A significant interaction effect (P<0.01) for sex and joint angle was observed with women demonstrating a lower H/Q_FUNC than males, especially at more extended knee positions. A significant sex by velocity interaction (P<0.01) indicated a lower H/Q_FUNC in women as velocity increased. Significant main effects (P<0.01) indicated that irrespective of sex the H/Q_FUNC increased as the knee extends and velocity increases.

CONCLUSION

Given the reduced H/Q_FUNC in females compared to males at more extended knee positions and faster velocities, this may contribute to the observed sex bias in reported injury rates.

Dynamic Fatigue Does Not Alter Soleus H-Reflexes Conditioned by Homonymous or Heteronymous Pathways

H-reflex depression (diminution of amplitude after a conditioning stimulus) is mediated presynaptically and therefore can help distinguish central versus peripheral mechanisms of fatigue. We examined the effects of a dynamic exercise protocol on H-reflex depression using two conditioning methods: homonymous conditioning (paired-pulse tibial nerve stimulation); and heteronymous conditioning (common peroneal nerve stimulation). Ten subjects performed dynamic contractions of the soleus muscle through 30° ankle range of motion. The concentric phase required a target force of 10% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and the eccentric phase force target was 80% MVIC. Fatigue persisted for >20 min after cessation of the exercise. Compared with prefatigue values, the dynamic fatigue protocol did not increase presynaptic inhibition after either homonymous or heteronymous conditioning. Peak to peak amplitude of unconditioned H-reflexes was likewise unchanged despite a long term depression of muscle force (long duration fatigue). These results suggest that persistent fatigue after dynamic exercise is attributed to muscle changes and not altered spinal mechanisms.

Time-course of performance changes and underlying mechanisms during and after repetitive moderately weight-loaded knee extensions

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of fatigue development induced by isoload (IL) fatiguing knee extensions. Nine physically active males (age=23±2years, height=179±7cm, mass=76±7kg) performed repetitive ballistic knee extensions at 30% of the isometric maximal voluntary peak torque. Fatigue development was assessed throughout the fatiguing exercise by quantifying changes in peak torque, agonist and antagonist electromyographic activity (EMG) and torque- and EMG-angle relationships. Before and after the fatiguing exercise, isometric maximal voluntary contractions were performed to measure peak torque (MVIC torque), voluntary activation (VA) and resting twitch torque. IL peak torque decreased from the middle of the fatiguing exercise while the agonist and antagonist EMG amplitude increased consistently during the entire exercise (P<.005). The pattern of the torque-angle relationship changed with fatigue (P<.005) reflecting a change in torque production strategy even if the EMG-angle relationships were not modified. Post-exercise testing revealed a decrease in MVIC torque (-31%; P<.005). VA was unchanged (P=.60) while the resting twitch torque was impaired to a great extent (-46%; P<.005) suggesting that local muscular mechanisms but not neural drive were altered during single-joint IL fatiguing task.

Factors contributing to the fatigue-related reduction in active dorsiflexion joint range of motion

Reductions in active joint range of motion (ROM) are responsible for decreased work-generating capacity during fatiguing repetitive isotonic shortening contractions. Factors responsible for impairing the joint-angle-specific net torque developed during muscle shortening could include fatigue-induced torque loss, shortening-induced torque depression in the agonist muscle, and opposing passive tension of the antagonists, but these have not been systematically explored. Nine men (aged 25.8 ± 2.0 years) performed a maximal-effort fatiguing task that consisted of repetitive loaded shortening dorsiflexions through a 40° ankle joint ROM until active ROM decreased by 50%. Torque developed during contractile shortening, as well as passive opposing tension, was quantified before and after the reduction in active ROM. Before fatigue, and compared with maximum voluntary isometric contraction torque at the terminal ROM, shortening-induced torque depression in the agonist muscle and passive tension from the antagonists reduced net torque developed at the end of contractile shortening by ∼42% and ∼19%, respectively. After fatigue, a steepened ascending joint torque–angle relationship remained during contractile shortening, but neither muscle coactivation nor contractile slowing contributed to the fatigue-induced torque loss. Fatigue-induced torque loss, shortening-induced torque depression in the agonist, and passive tension in the antagonist greatly depressed net torque developed at the end of contractile shortening. These contributed to the fatigue-induced reduction in active ROM by impairing the ability of the dorsiflexors to generate sufficient torque to overcome the imposed load at the end of contractile shortening.

Effect of altered arterial perfusion pressure on vascular conductance and muscle blood flow dynamic response during exercise in humans

Changes in vascular conductance (VC) are required to counter changes in muscle perfusion pressure (MPP) to maintain muscle blood flow (MBF) during exercise. We investigated the recruitment of VC as a function of peak VC measured in three body positions at two different work rates to test the hypothesis that adaptations in VC compensated changes in MPP at low-power output (LPO), but not at high-power output (HPO). Eleven healthy volunteers exercised at LPO and HPO (repeated plantar flexion contractions at 20–30% maximal voluntary contraction, respectively) in horizontal (HOR), 35° head-down tilt (HDT), and 45° head-up tilt (HUT). Muscle blood flow velocity and popliteal diameter were measured by ultrasound to determine MBF, and VC was estimated by dividing MBF flow by MPP. Peak VC was unaffected by body position. The rates of increase in MBF and VC were significantly faster in HUT and slower in HDT than HOR, and rates were faster in LPO than HPO. During LPO exercise, the increase in, and steady-state values of, MBF were less for HUT and HDT than HOR; the increase in VC was less in HUT than HOR and HDT. During HPO exercise, MBF in the HDT was reduced compared with HOR and HUT, even though VC reached 92% VC peak, which was greater than HOR, which was, in turn, greater than HUT. Reduced MBF during HPO HDT exercise had the functional consequence of a significant increase in muscle electromyographic index, revealing the effects of MPP on O2 delivery during exercise.

Neuromuscular fatigue recovery following rapid and slow stretch–shortening cycle movements

The purpose of this study was to investigate underlying mechanisms and neuromuscular recovery patterns following rapid and slow stretch–shortening cycle (SSC) movements performed to fatigue. Fourteen (10 moderately trained (MT) and four highly trained (HT)) subjects completed rapid and slow SSC movements to fatigue. The rapid SSC movement consisted of continuous drop jumps from a 30 cm platform until a predetermined jump height was no longer maintained, and the slow SSC movement consisted of continuous squats to 90° of knee flexion at a load of 65% of subject’s one-repetition maximum until no further repetitions could be completed. Although blood lactate measures were significantly (p < 0.002) higher after the rapid SSC condition versus after the slow SSC condition, the recovery of neuromuscular properties (maximum voluntary contractions, twitch force, muscle compound action potential) following the two conditions to fatigue did not differ. The duration of the rapid SSC movement was dependent on the training status of the subject; HT subjects performed the rapid SSC longer (68.2%) than the MT subjects until fatigued. Thus, the neuromuscular fatigue recovery patterns were independent of the type of SSC movement, condition duration, and subject training status. Because rapid and slow SSC exercises induce similar fatigue patterns, training programs incorporating rapid SSC exercises can be developed similar to that prescribed in traditional slow SSC resistance training programs.

Neuromuscular adjustments that constrain submaximal EMG amplitude at task failure of sustained isometric contractions

The amplitude of the surface EMG does not reach the level achieved during a maximal voluntary contraction force at the end of a sustained, submaximal contraction, despite near-maximal levels of voluntary effort. The depression of EMG amplitude may be explained by several neural and muscular adjustments during fatiguing contractions, including decreased net neural drive to the muscle, changes in the shape of the motor unit action potentials, and EMG amplitude cancellation. The changes in these parameters for the entire motor unit pool, however, cannot be measured experimentally. The present study used a computational model to simulate the adjustments during sustained isometric contractions and thereby determine the relative importance of these factors in explaining the submaximal levels of EMG amplitude at task failure. The simulation results indicated that the amount of amplitude cancellation in the simulated EMG (∼ 40%) exhibited a negligible change during the fatiguing contractions. Instead, the main determinant of the submaximal EMG amplitude at task failure was a decrease in muscle activation (number of muscle fiber action potentials), due to a reduction in the net synaptic input to motor neurons, with a lesser contribution from changes in the shape of the motor unit action potentials. Despite the association between the submaximal EMG amplitude and reduced muscle activation, the deficit in EMG amplitude at task failure was not consistently associated with the decrease in neural drive (number of motor unit action potentials) to the muscle. This indicates that the EMG amplitude cannot be used as an index of neural drive.

The effects of fatigue of the plantar flexors on peak torque and voluntary activation in untrained and resistance-trained men

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of fatigue of the plantar flexors on peak torque and voluntary activation in untrained (UT) and resistance-trained (RT) men. Six men with no previous resistance training experience and 8 men with similar histories of chronic resistance training (9.8 ± 5.9 years, 3.8 ± 0.7 days/week) volunteered for this study. Subjects performed isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) before and immediately after unilateral dynamic isotonic contractions performed at 40% of MVC until volitional exhaustion. Voluntary activation of the plantar flexors was assessed using the interpolated twitch method (ITT) and central activation ratio (CAR). Surface electromyographic (EMG) amplitude of the soleus and medial gastrocnemius (MG) was measured during the MVC. There were significant reductions in MVC torque in both UT and RT groups after the fatiguing exercise (-10.7 ± 6.8%, p < 0.02; -9.1 ± 8.7%, p < 0.02, respectively), with no difference in the number of repetitions performed between groups. The UT and RT men experienced a significant decrease in ITT after the fatiguing exercise bout (-14.2 ± 11.8%, p = 0.03; -7.8 ± 9.3%, p = 0.045, respectively). The UT group experienced a significant decrease in CAR (99.5 ± 0.8% to 91.4 ± 6.4%, p = 0.025) with no change (p > 0.05) in the RT group. There was also a fatigue-induced decrease in normalized EMG amplitude for the soleus and MG muscles in both groups (p < 0.05). However, no differences were determined between groups for ITT, CAR, or EMG. Despite similar reductions in MVC torque postexercise, the UT men had a significant decrease in CAR and experienced nearly twice the decline in ITT than the RT men. These results indicate that the neural adaptations associated with chronic resistance training may lead to less susceptibility to central fatigue as measured by ITT and CAR.

The effects of load and training pattern on acute neuromuscular responses in the upper body

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of repetition maximum (RM) loads and training patterns on acute neuromuscular responses in the upper body. Markers of fatigue were monitored under a descending pattern (DP), in which repetitions decreased in subsequent sets, and an ascending pattern (AP), in which repetitions increased in subsequent sets. Both training patterns were performed using 5- and 10-RM loads. Fatigue was assessed by monitoring changes in force output, motor unit activation and muscle twitch characteristics (peak twitch [PT], time to PT [TPT], and ½ relaxation time [RT]). All 4 protocols (5-RM DP, 5-RM AP, 10-RM DP, and 10-RM AP) produced significant decreases pre to postprotocol in force output, TPT, and ½RT. With the exception of 5-RM DP, all protocols produced significant decreases in motor unit activation. Pre to postprotocol, PT forces were potentiated under 5-RM loads, whereas they were depressed under 10-RM loads. Hence, a main effect for training protocols showed that changes in PT force were significantly different under 5-RM, as compared to 10-RM loads. The results indicate that central fatigue may be independent of load and pattern, whereas peripheral fatigue would appear to be dependent on load but not pattern.

Fatigue-induced reductions of torque and shortening velocity are muscle dependent

INTRODUCTION

In addition to torque (force) loss during dynamic fatiguing contractions, an important aspect of fatigue is the reduction in shortening velocity. Relatively few reports have studied changes in shortening velocity in response to fatigue, and inconsistencies in the results might depend on the muscle tested. To better understand fatigue-related changes in shortening velocity in different muscles, we compared the fatigue response of two muscles in humans with different physiological properties using the same criterion for task failure.

METHODS

During separate sessions for the triceps brachii and soleus, 10 young males performed repetitive shortening contractions with a moderate load (50% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque) until they achieved a 50% reduction in loaded shortening velocity at task failure.

RESULTS

In the unfatigued condition, these muscles expressed different physiological features with similar power output but approximately 1.5 times slower shortening velocity, approximately 1.4 times slower normalized evoked 50-Hz maximum rate of relaxation, and approximately 47% lower postactivation potentiation in the soleus compared with the triceps brachii. During the fatiguing task, significantly less total work was performed in the soleus ( approximately 1986 J) compared with the triceps brachii ( approximately 3940 J), suggesting greater endurance in the triceps brachii. Despite similar relative reductions in shortening velocity in both muscles at task failure, the soleus had a smaller reduction in MVC torque than the triceps brachii at task failure. Furthermore, in both muscles, there was a greater reduction at task failure and a faster restoration of shortening velocity compared with MVC torque.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that fatigue-related mechanisms that reduce torque are not the same as those that reduce shortening velocity.

Power output and electromyographic activity during and after a moderate load muscular endurance session

The purpose of this study was to examine (a) the mechanical power and the electromyographic (EMG) activity during a moderate load muscular endurance session and (b) the maximal mechanical power output and EMG activity using a light load and a heavy load afterward. Sixteen men (age: 20.7 +/- 1.1 years) performed 4 sets of 20 repetitions with an initial load of 50% of 1 repetition maximum (1RM), and 2 minutes of rest, in the squat exercise. Furthermore, the subjects performed 4 repetitions with loads of 40 and 80% of 1RM before, immediately after, and 30 minutes after the end of the session. Average power and EMG activity from vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), and rectus femoris (RF) were recorded during the concentric phase of the lift. Average power did not change during the first 2 sets, while it decreased (p < 0.05) during the third and the fourth set. Average quadriceps (AQ), VM, VL, and RF activity increased (p < 0.05) until the 11th repetition, approximately, during each set while it increased gradually from set to set. Maximal power and AQ, VM, and VL activity with the loads of 40 and 80% of 1RM were decreased (p < 0.05) after the session. Blood lactate reached 10.2 +/- 2.5 and 13.1 +/- 4.1 mmolxL after the second and the fourth set, respectively. It appears that during a muscular endurance session with submaximal power output, mechanical performance may gradually decrease, probably due to metabolic fatigue, while muscle electrical activity may increase. Following this type of a session, maximal power output and muscle activation with a light and especially with a heavy load are reduced.

Voluntary activation of the infraspinatus muscle in nonfatigued and fatigued states

HYPOTHESIS

Failure of voluntary activation is an important source of weakness in several different muscles after injury or surgery. Despite the high prevalence of shoulder rotator cuff disorders and associated weakness, no test currently exists to identify voluntary activation deficits for the rotator cuff. The purpose of this study was to develop a test to quantify voluntary activation of the infraspinatus. We hypothesized that there would be a consistent relationship between the voluntary activation level and different force levels and that reduced voluntary activation would partially account for reduced force with fatigue.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twenty healthy volunteers underwent assessment of voluntary activation using an electrical stimulus applied to the infraspinatus muscle during active isometric external rotation. Voluntary activation was assessed across several levels of external rotation effort and during fatigue.

RESULTS

The voluntary activation-percent force relationship was best fit using a curvilinear model, and the fatigue test reduced both force and voluntary activation by 46%.

DISCUSSION

In the nonfatigued state, the voluntary activation-percent force relationship is similar to that reported for the quadriceps. After fatigue, however, greater failure of voluntary activation was observed compared with reported values for other upper and lower extremity muscles, which may have implications for the understanding and treatment of rotator cuff pathology.

CONCLUSION

A measure of voluntary activation for the infraspinatus varied with the percent maximum force in a predictable manner that is consistent with the literature. The infraspinatus may be more susceptible to failure of voluntary activation during fatigue than other muscles.

Isometric torque and shortening velocity following fatigue and recovery of different voluntary tasks in the dorsiflexors

The present study was designed to compare the relative influence of various fatigue-related factors involved in isometric and dynamic task failure following an equivalent decrease in isometric maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) torque. Using a similar duty cycle (∼1-s contraction per 2 s) and contraction load (50% of MVC), 9 young males performed in the dorsiflexors a dynamic task, and on a separate occasion an intermittent isometric task, to an equal decrease in isometric MVC torque. Dynamic contractions had greater motor unit activation and maximum rate of torque development, and required fewer contractions to task failure than the isometric task, indicating a faster development of fatigue during the velocity-dependent dynamic contractions. Peripheral factors, rather than impairments in voluntary drive, were responsible for the equivalent decrease in MVC torque at task failure and its subsequent incomplete recovery. These included, for both tasks, similar changes during fatigue and recovery in voluntary isometric MVC torque, shortening velocity, stimulated twitch and 50 Hz torque, and 50 Hz maximum rate of relaxation. Irrespective of the task, however, the greater reduction in shortening velocity at task failure and its subsequent faster recovery than MVC torque suggest that changes in metabolites affect velocity to a greater extent than isometric torque.

Altitude-induced changes in muscle contractile properties

Because of its high energetic demand, skeletal muscle is sensitive to changes in the partial pressure of oxygen. Most human studies on in vivo skeletal muscle function during hypoxia were performed with voluntary contractions. However, skeletal muscle function is not only characterized by voluntary maximal or repeated force- generating capacity, but also by force generated by evoked muscle contractions (i.e., force-frequency properties). This mini-review reports on the effects of acute or prolonged exposure to hypoxia on human skeletal muscle performance and contractile properties. The latter depend on both the amount and type of contractile proteins and the efficiency of the cellular mechanism of excitation-contraction coupling. Observations on humans indicate that hypoxia (during simulated ascent or brief exposure) exerts modest influences on the membrane propagation of the muscle action potentials during voluntary contractions. Overall in humans, in physiological conditions, including that of climbing Mt. Everest, there is extraordinarily little that changes with regard to maximal force-generating capacity. Interestingly, it appears that the adaptations to chronic hypoxia minimize the effects on skeletal muscle dysfunction (i.e., impairment during fatigue resistance exercise and in muscle contractile properties) that may occur during acute hypoxia for some isolated muscle exercises. Only sustained isometric exercise exceeding a certain intensity (30% MVC) and causing substantial and sustained ischemia is not affected by acute hypoxia.

Effects of repeated ankle plantar-flexions on H-reflex and body sway during standing

The study investigated relations between effects of repeated ankle plantar-flexion movements exercise on the soleus Hoffmann (H) reflex and on postural body sway when maintaining upright stance. Ten young volunteers performed five sets of ankle plantar-flexions of both lower limbs. Assessment of the feet centre-of-pressure (COP) displacement and H-reflex tests were carried out in quiet stance before, during and after the exercise. H-max and M-max responses were obtained in 8 subjects and reported as the peak-to-peak amplitudes of the right soleus muscle electromyographic waves. Mean dispersion of COP along the antero-posterior direction increased significantly during the exercise; whilst the overall H-reflex response indicated a reduction without a concomitant modification in the M-max response. H-reflex responses, however, varied between participants during the first sets of exercise, showing two main trends of modulation: either depression or early facilitation followed by reduction of the H-reflex amplitude. The extent of reflex modulation in standing position was correlated to the concentric work performed during the exercise (r=0.85; p<0.01), but not to the antero-posterior COP dispersion. These results suggest that during a repeated ankle plantar-flexions exercise, modulation of the H-reflex measured in upright stance differs across individuals and is not related to changes of postural sway.

Neuromuscular fatigue profile in endurance-trained and power-trained athletes

PURPOSE

This study examined the effects of training background on the relationship between the neuromuscular fatigue profile and maximal voluntary torque production in isometric, concentric, and eccentric contraction modes.

METHODS

Before and after three sets of 31 isokinetic concentric knee extensions at 60 degrees .s(-1), voluntary and electrically induced contractions were recorded in 14 endurance-trained (ENDU) men (seven cyclists: age 25 +/- 2 yr, mass 70 +/- 8 kg, height 175 +/- 5 cm; and seven triathletes: age 27 +/- 4 yr, mass 71 +/- 5 kg, height 179 +/- 6 cm) and seven explosive power-trained men (EXPLO: age 24 +/- 1 yr, mass 73 +/- 5 kg, height 179 +/- 4 cm). Maximal knee-extension torque, activation level (twitch interpolation technique), electromyographic activity of agonist and antagonist muscles, and twitch contractile properties were assessed.

RESULTS

At preexercise, the maximal voluntary isometric and concentric torques of EXPLO were greater than those of ENDU (P < 0.05). After the fatiguing exercise, significant isometric (18%; P < 0.01) and concentric (25%; P < 0.05) torque decreases in EXPLO were associated with, respectively, twitch torque (Pt) and maximal rate of twitch development (+dPt/dt) reductions (P < 0.01) and with an increase in the antagonist coactivation level (P < 0.01). No modification was observed for ENDU. Interestingly, the coactivation level was also increased (P < 0.01) in eccentric contraction for EXPLO, although the maximal eccentric torque decrease (P < 0.01) could not be specifically attributed to any group.

CONCLUSION

The fatiguing exercise induced central and peripheral adaptations, but the mechanisms differed regarding the contraction mode. At pre- and postfatiguing exercise, it seems that the neuromuscular profile depends on the subject's training background and the contraction modes used to assess fatigue.

Fatigue and muscle-tendon stiffness after stretch-shortening cycle and isometric exercise

The purpose of the present study was to compare vertical jump performance after 2 different fatigue protocols. In the first protocol, subjects performed consecutive sets of 10 repetitions of stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) contractions. In the second protocol, successive sets of 10 repetitions of isometric contractions were performed for 10 s with the knee at 90 degrees of flexion. The exercises were stopped when the subjects failed to reach 50% of their maximum voluntary isometric contractions. Maximal isometric force and maximal concentric power were assessed by performing supine leg presses, squat jumps, and drop jumps. Surface EMG was used to determine changes in muscle activation before and after fatigue. In both groups, the fatigue exercises reduced voluntary isometric force, maximal concentric power, and drop jump performance. Kinematic data showed a decrease in knee muscle-tendon stiffness accompanied by a lengthened ground contact time. EMG analysis showed that the squat and drop jumps were performed similarly before and after the fatigue exercise for both groups. Although it was expected that the stiffness would decrease more after SSC than after isometric fatigue (as a result of a greater alteration of the reflex sensitivity SSC), our results showed that both protocols had a similar effect on knee muscle stiffness during jumping exercises. Both fatigue protocols induced muscle fatigue, and the decrease in jump performance was linked to a decrease in the strength and stiffness of the knee extensor muscles.

Assessment of the reliability of central and peripheral fatigue after sustained maximal voluntary contraction of the quadriceps muscle

The aim of the present study was to further confirm the validity of measurements for characterizing neuromuscular alterations by establishing their reliability both before and after fatigue. Thirteen men (28 +/- 5 years) volunteered to participate in two separate identical sessions requiring the performance of a sustained maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) with the quadriceps muscle for 2 min. MVC and transcutaneous electrical stimulations were used before and immediately after the fatiguing contraction to investigate the reliability of MVC torque, central activation, and peripheral variables (M-wave properties, peak twitch, peak doublet) within and between sessions. Based on previous and present results, we advise the use of (1) voluntary activation level with potentiated doublet as a reference to describe central fatigue, (2) electromyographic activity of vastus lateralis muscle as a surrogate for quadriceps for both voluntary and evoked contraction, and (3) potentiated peak doublet amplitude to investigate contractile fatigue. These findings can be useful in the choice of the parameters describing central and peripheral fatigue of the quadriceps muscle in future studies.

In vivo assessment of elbow flexor work and activation during stretch-shortening cycle tasks

The purpose of this study was to use an electromyography (EMG) based muscle model to investigate the performance enhancement of stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) tasks at different elbow flexion-extension velocities. A torque motor was used to oscillate the forearms of seven healthy male subjects (23-40 years) during SSC and non-SSC contractions at four frequencies of movement (.58, 1.5, 2.4 and 3.3Hz) over a range of 105 degrees -162 degrees of elbow extension. The torque was integrated as a function of joint angle to yield the work produced by the elbow flexors. The elbow flexors were transcutaneously stimulated with a voltage equivalent to 60% maximum voluntary isometric contraction torque for 4s at 50Hz. EMG of the elbow flexors and extensors was recorded from the biceps and triceps respectively. The processed EMG was used to drive a Hill based model to predict the torque of the elbow flexors. Results indicate that muscle work increases from non-SSC to SSC trials. Work decreases for SSC and non-SSC trials with increasing velocity. The simulated constant activation muscle model predicted work well for all trials and conditions, indicating muscle model accuracy. The EMG driven model predicted well for all non-SSC trials, but significantly underestimated the work for SSC tasks, suggesting that the contractile component is directly involved in optimising muscle work during SSC tasks.

Is fatigue all in your head? A critical review of the central governor model

The central governor model has recently been proposed as a general model to explain the phenomenon of fatigue. It proposes that the subconscious brain regulates power output (pacing strategy) by modulating motor unit recruitment to preserve whole body homoeostasis and prevent catastrophic physiological failure such as rigor. In this model, the word fatigue is redefined from a term that describes an exercise decline in the ability to produce force and power to one of sensation or emotion. The underpinnings of the central governor model are the refutation of what is described variously as peripheral fatigue, limitations models, and the cardiovascular/anaerobic/catastrophe model. This argument centres on the inability of lactic acid models of fatigue to adequately explain fatigue. In this review, it is argued that a variety of peripheral factors other than lactic acid are known to compromise muscle force and power and that these effects may protect against "catastrophe". Further, it is shown that a variety of studies indicate that fatigue induced decreases in performance cannot be adequately explained by the central governor model. Instead, it is suggested that the concept of task dependency, in which the mechanisms of fatigue vary depending on the specific exercise stressor, is a more comprehensive and defensible model of fatigue. This model includes aspects of both central and peripheral contributions to fatigue, and the relative importance of each probably varies with the type of exercise.

Neuromuscular fatigue differs with biofeedback type when performing a submaximal contraction

The aim of the study was to examine alterations in contractile and neural processes in response to an isometric fatiguing contraction performed with EMG feedback (constant-EMG task) when exerting 40% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque with the knee extensor muscles. A task with a torque feedback (constant-torque task) set at a similar intensity served as a reference task. Thirteen men (26+/-5 yr) attended two experimental sessions that were randomized across days. Endurance time was greater for the constant-EMG task compared with the constant-torque task (230+/-156 s vs. 101+/-32s, P<0.01). Average EMG activity for the knee extensor muscles increased from 33.5+/-4.5% to 54.7+/-21.7% MVC EMG during the constant-torque task (P<0.001), whereas the torque exerted during the constant-EMG task decreased from 42.8+/-3.0% to 17.9+/-5.6% MVC torque (P<0.001). Comparable reductions in knee extensors MVC (-15.7+/-8.7% for the constant-torque task vs. -17.5+/-9.8% for the constant-EMG task, P>0.05) and voluntary activation level were observed at exhaustion. In contrast, excitation-contraction coupling process, assessed with an electrically evoked twitch and doublet, was altered significantly more at the end of the constant-EMG task despite the absence of M-wave changes for both tasks. Present results suggest that prolonged contractions using EMG biofeedback should be used cautiously in rehabilitation programs.

Age-related fatigability of the ankle dorsiflexor muscles during concentric and eccentric contractions

This study compares the fatigability of the ankle dorsiflexors during five sets of 30 maximal concentric and eccentric contractions in young and elderly adults. The torque produced by the ankle dorsiflexors and the average surface electromyogram (aEMG) of the tibialis anterior were continuously recorded. The contribution of central and peripheral mechanisms to muscle fatigue was tested before, after each set of contractions, and during a 30 min recovery period by the superimposed electrical stimulation method. The compound muscle action potential (M-wave), the mechanical response to single (twitch) and paired (doublet) stimulation, and the postactivation potentiation were also recorded. Compared with young subjects, elderly adults exhibited a greater loss of torque for concentric (50.2 vs. 40.9%; P<0.05) and eccentric (42.1 vs. 27.1%; P < 0.01) contractions. Although young subjects showed a lesser decrease in torque during the eccentric compared with concentric contractions, elderly adults experienced similar fatigability for the two types of contractions despite a comparable depression in the EMG activity of both groups and contraction types (10-20%). As tested by the interpolated-twitch method and aEMG/M-wave ratio, voluntary activation was not altered during either type of contraction or for either age group. During the two fatigue tasks, only elderly adults experienced a decrease in M-wave area (26.4-35.4%; P < 0.05). All together, our results suggest that the fatigue exhibited by both young and elderly adults during maximal concentric and eccentric contractions mainly involved peripheral alterations and that elderly adults may also have experienced a decline in neuromuscular propagation.

Contribution of M-waves and H-reflexes to contractions evoked by tetanic nerve stimulation in humans

Tetanic neuromuscular stimulation evokes contractions by depolarizing motor axons beneath the stimulating electrodes. However, we have shown that extra torque can develop due to the discharge of spinal neurons recruited by the evoked sensory volley. The present experiments investigated whether extra torque in the ankle plantar- and dorsiflexors was associated with enhanced H-reflexes. The tibial and common peroneal nerves were stimulated using 7-s trains (20 Hz for 2 s, 100 Hz for 2 s, 20 Hz for 3 s). Extra torque was defined as significantly more torque during 20-Hz stimulation after the 100-Hz burst (time2) than before it (time1). In 9 of 11 subjects, extra plantarflexion torque developed during stimulation just above motor threshold. In these nine subjects, torque increased from 8 to 13% MVC (time1 to time2), the soleus H-reflex increased from 13 to 19% Mmax and the M-wave of approximately 2% Mmax did not change significantly. To evoke extra dorsiflexion torque, greater stimulation intensities were required. In 6 of 13 subjects, extra torque developed at intensities that evoked an M-wave of 5-20% Mmax at time1. In these six subjects, torque doubled from 2 to 4% MVC (time1 to time2), whereas tibialis anterior (TA) H-reflexes and M-waves did not change significantly (H-reflex from 0.8 to 2% Mmax; M-wave from 12 to 14% Mmax). In 7 of 13 subjects, extra torque developed at higher stimulation intensities (35-65% Mmax). In these seven subjects, torque increased from 13 to 20% MVC, whereas TA H-reflexes and M-waves were not significantly different (H-reflex from 0.7 to 1% Mmax; M-wave from 49 to 54% Mmax). Thus enhanced H-reflexes contributed to extra plantarflexion, however, other factors generated extra dorsiflexion.

Postfatigue potentiation of the paralyzed soleus muscle: evidence for adaptation with long-term electrical stimulation training

Understanding the torque output behavior of paralyzed muscle has important implications for the use of functional neuromuscular electrical stimulation systems. Postfatigue potentiation is an augmentation of peak muscle torque during repetitive activation after a fatigue protocol. The purposes of this study were 1) to quantify postfatigue potentiation in the acutely and chronically paralyzed soleus and 2) to determine the effect of long-term soleus electrical stimulation training on the potentiation characteristics of recently paralyzed soleus muscle. Five subjects with chronic paralysis (>2 yr) demonstrated significant postfatigue potentiation during a repetitive soleus activation protocol that induced low-frequency fatigue. Ten subjects with acute paralysis (<6 mo) demonstrated no torque potentiation in response to repetitive stimulation. Seven of these acute subjects completed 2 yr of home-based isometric soleus electrical stimulation training of one limb (compliance = 83%; 8,300 contractions/wk). With the early implementation of electrically stimulated training, potentiation characteristics of trained soleus muscles were preserved as in the acute postinjury state. In contrast, untrained limbs showed marked postfatigue potentiation at 2 yr after spinal cord injury (SCI). A single acute SCI subject who was followed longitudinally developed potentiation characteristics very similar to the untrained limbs of the training subjects. The results of the present investigation support that postfatigue potentiation is a characteristic of fast-fatigable muscle and can be prevented by timely neuromuscular electrical stimulation training. Potentiation is an important consideration in the design of functional electrical stimulation control systems for people with SCI.

Neuromuscular fatigue development during maximal concentric and isometric knee extensions

This study aimed to investigate mechanisms of neuromuscular fatigue during maximal concentric and isometric leg extensions inducing similar torque decrements. Nine physically active men performed two separate fatiguing sessions maintained until similar torque decreases were obtained. The first session, only conducted under isokinetic concentric conditions (CON), consisted of three series of 30 maximal voluntary concentric knee extensions (60 degrees/s). The second session, exclusively isometric (ISO), mimicked the torque decreases registered during the CON session while performing three long-lasting ISO contractions. Maximal voluntary torque, activation level (twitch interpolation technique), electromyographic activity (root mean square and median frequency) of the vastus lateralis muscle, and electrically evoked doublet-twitch mechanical properties were measured before and at the end of each of the three series. After the three series, similar torque decrements were obtained for both fatiguing procedures. The total fatiguing contraction durations were not different among procedures. With equivalent voluntary torque decrements, the doublet-twitch amplitude reduction was significantly greater (P<0.01) during the two first series of the CON procedure compared with ISO. No difference was observed for the third series. Although no difference was recorded with fatigue for median frequency changes between CON and ISO, activation levels and root mean square values demonstrated greater reductions (P<0.05) for all three series during the ISO procedure compared with CON. Performing CON or ISO fatiguing exercises demonstrated different fatigue origins. With CON exercises, peripheral fatigue developed first, followed by central fatigue, whereas with ISO exercises the fatigue pattern was inverted.

Influence of motor unit properties on the size of the simulated evoked surface EMG potential

The purpose of the study was to quantify the influence of selected motor unit properties on the simulated amplitude and area of evoked muscle potentials detected at the skin surface. The study was restricted to a motor unit population simulating a hand muscle whose potentials were recorded on the skin over the muscle. Peak-to-peak amplitude and area of the evoked potential were calculated from the summed motor unit potentials and compared across conditions that simulated variation in different motor unit properties. The simulations involved varying the number of activated motor units, muscle fiber conduction velocities, axonal conduction velocities, neuronal activation times, the shape of the intracellular action potential, and recording configurations commonly used over hand muscles. The results obtained for the default condition simulated in this study indicated that ~7% of the motor unit potentials were responsible for 50% of the size of the evoked potential. Variation in the amplitude and area of the evoked muscle potential was directly related to the number of active motor units only when the stimulus activated motor units randomly, and not when activation was based on a parameter such as motor unit size. Independent adjustments in motor unit properties had variable effects on the size of the evoked muscle potential, including when the stimulus activated only a subpopulation of motor units. These results provide reference information that can be used to assist in the interpretation of experimentally observed changes in the size of evoked muscle potentials.

Fatigue and recovery of power and isometric torque following isotonic knee extensions

The purpose of this study was to assess fatigue and recovery of isotonic power and isometric contractile properties after a series of maximal isotonic contractions. Using a Biodex dynamometer, 13 men [26 yr (SD 3)] performed isotonic [50% of isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) every 1.2 s through 75 degrees range of motion] single-limb knee extensions at the fastest velocity they could achieve until velocity was reduced by 35%. Time to task failure was 38 s, and, compared with baseline, power declined by approximately 42% [741.0 (SD 106.0) vs. 426.5 W (SD 60.3) at task failure], and MVC declined by approximately 26% [267.3 (SD 42.5) vs. 198.4 N.m (SD 45.7) at task failure]. Power recovered by 5 min, whereas MVC did not recover, and at 10 min was only approximately 85% of baseline. Isometric MVC motor unit activation was approximately 95% at rest and was unchanged at task failure (approximately 96%), but a small amount of failure was apparent between 1.5 and 10 min of recovery (approximately 87 to approximately 91%). Half relaxation time measured from a 50-Hz isometric tetanus was significantly prolonged by approximately 33% immediately after task failure but recovered by 1.5 min. A decline in the 10- to 50-Hz ratio of the evoked isometric contractions was observed at 5 and 10 min of recovery, which suggests excitation-contraction coupling impairment. Changes in velocity and half relaxation time during the protocol were strongly and negatively correlated (r = -0.85). Thus mainly peripheral mechanisms were implicated in the substantial depression but relatively fast recovery of isotonic power. Furthermore, isometric muscle contractile properties were related to some, but not all, changes in isotonic function.

Neural activation of the triceps surae is impaired following 2 weeks of immobilization

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 2 weeks of ankle joint immobilization on triceps surae neural activation, with particular emphasis on the potential differences between the monoarticular soleus and the biarticular gastrocnemius muscles. Seventeen male volunteers were divided into the immobilized group (IG, n = 8) and the control group (CG, n = 9). Elastic adhesive bandages and an ankle stabilization orthosis were used to immobilize the ankle joint only. The plantar flexor torque obtained during maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and after single, paired and tetanic stimuli applied at rest was measured. The associated EMG activity from the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles was also recorded, and their activation levels were estimated by means of the twitch interpolation technique. After immobilization, triceps surae maximal voluntary torque significantly decreased by 17% (P < 0.001). Strength losses were accompanied by a decrement in activation level (-6%, average of the three techniques used) and in maximal 100 Hz tetanic force (-11%). A significant decrease in the soleus (-22%, P < 0.05) but not in the gastrocnemius EMG activity, normalized to respective M-waves, was also found. It was concluded that the reduced voluntary torque output after immobilization could be attributed to both muscular and neural alterations. These latter selectively involved the monoarticular soleus muscle, while neural drive to the biarticular gastrocnemii, which had not been immobilized in their function as knee flexors, was preserved.

Muscular Performances at the Ankle Joint in Young and Elderly Men

The effect of aging on mechanical and electromyographic characteristics of ankle joint muscles was investigated in 11 young (mean age 24 years) and 12 elderly (mean age 77 years) males. Maximal and submaximal isometric voluntary torques were measured during ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. Electromyographic activities of triceps surae and tibialis anterior muscles were recorded. The elderly group developed equal maximal dorsiflexion torques (42 vs 45 N.m, p >.05), but in plantarflexion, the elderly group was weaker (80 vs 132 N.m, p <.001) and presented a decreased twitch amplitude (11 vs 16 N.m) and lower coactivation (8% vs 15%) than that of the young adults. We established a linear relationship between the percentage of coactivation and developed resultant torque. Our results showed that dorsiflexor muscles were not affected by aging, contrary to plantarflexors, in which the decline in torque was partly explained by changes intervening at the peripheral level.

Twitch potentiation is greater after a fatiguing submaximal isometric contraction performed at short vs. long quadriceps muscle length

Endurance time of a submaximal sustained contraction is longer when the muscle is fatigued in a shortened position. The aim of the present study was to compare central and peripheral mechanisms of fatigue after an isometric contraction of the knee extensor muscles performed at 20% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at two knee angles (35 degrees , short length vs. 75 degrees , long length; 0 degrees = full extension) until exhaustion. Eleven men (24 +/- 4 yr) attended two experimental randomized sessions. Endurance time was greater at 35 degrees compared with 75 degrees (974 +/- 457 vs. 398 +/- 144 s; P < 0.001) despite a similar reduction in knee extensor MVC (-28.4 +/- 16.0%, P < 0.001 vs. -27.6 +/- 18.8%, P < 0.001, respectively). Voluntary activation level was similarly depressed after the fatiguing contraction performed at the two muscle lengths (-19 +/- 16.7% at 35 degrees , P < 0.01 vs. -13.7 +/- 14.5% at 75 degrees , P < 0.01). After the fatiguing contraction, peak twitch potentiation was observed only at the short length (+31.8 +/- 17.6% at 35 degrees , P < 0.01 vs. +6.4 +/- 21.3% at 75 degrees , P > 0.05), whereas M-wave properties were similarly altered for the two angles. These results suggest that 1) central fatigue at task failure for a sustained isometric contraction was not dependent on the muscle length, and 2) the longer endurance time of a sustained isometric contraction performed at a shortened length is related to potentiation. It is suggested that the greater endurance time of a sustained isometric contraction observed at 35 degrees is related to the occurrence of potentiation at this short length, because central fatigue is similar at task failure for both tasks.
