Abstract
OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSAssessing workers' strength capacities is a common practice prior to return to work following injury or illness, or assessing capabilities for strenuous jobs. Because it requires 50% or more of maximum strength capacity, hip abductor muscle strength is a strong predictor of both middle- and older-aged individuals' ability to reliably balance on one leg and of their risk of falls. Our results suggest subjects were able to augment their hip abductor moment during unipedal weight stance via gluteus maximus activity. Weight-bearing hip abduction strength measures are important for assessing worker capacity for jobs requiring reliable unipedal balance whether during lateral loading, while walking in gusty winds, on slippery footing or resisting lateral deck movements on board ship or train. Measurements of hip abductor strength should be made in a full unipedal weight bearing posture; non-weight-bearing measurements significantly underpredicted hip abductor strength as well as endurance.

Abstract
Successful reactive balance control requires coordinated modulation of hip, knee, and ankle torques. Stabilizing joint torques arise from feedforward neural signals that modulate the musculoskeletal system's intrinsic mechanical properties, namely muscle short-range stiffness, and neural feedback pathways that activate muscles in response to sensory input. Although feedforward and feedback pathways are known to modulate the torque at each joint, the role of each pathway to the balance-correcting response across joints is poorly understood. Since the feedforward and feedback torque responses act at different delays following perturbations to balance, we modified the sensorimotor response model (SRM), previously used to analyze the muscle activation response to perturbations, to consist of parallel feedback loops with different delays. Each loop within the model is driven by the same information, center of mass (CoM) kinematics, but each loop has an independent delay. We evaluated if a parallel loop SRM could decompose the reactive torques into the feedforward and feedback contributions during balance-correcting responses to backward support surface translations at four magnitudes. The SRM accurately reconstructed reactive joint torques at the hip, knee, and ankle, across all perturbation magnitudes (R 2 >0.84 & VAF>0.83). Moreover, the hip and knee exhibited feedforward and feedback components, while the ankle only exhibited feedback components. The lack of a feedforward component at the ankle may occur because the compliance of the Achilles tendon attenuates muscle short-range stiffness. Our model may provide a framework for evaluating changes in the feedforward and feedback contributions to balance that occur due to aging, injury, or disease. NEWS AND NOTEWORTHY Reactive balance control requires coordination of neurally-mediated feedforward and feedback pathways to generate stabilizing joint torques at the hip, knee, and ankle. Using a sensorimotor response model, we decomposed reactive joint torques into feedforward and feedback contributions based on delays relative to center of mass kinematics. Responses across joints were driven by the same signals, but contributions from feedforward versus feedback pathways differed, likely due to differences in musculotendon properties between proximal and distal muscles.

Abstract
Muscle synergies are defined as coordinated recruitment of groups of muscles with specific activation balances and time profiles aimed at generating task-specific motor commands. While muscle synergies in postural control have been investigated primarily in reactive balance conditions, the neuromechanical contribution of muscle synergies during voluntary control of upright standing is still unclear. In this study, muscle synergies were investigated during the generation of isometric force at the trunk during the maintenance of standing posture. Participants were asked to maintain the steady-state upright standing posture while pulling forces of different magnitudes were applied at the level at the waist in eight horizontal directions. Muscle synergies were extracted by nonnegative matrix factorization from sixteen lower limb and trunk muscles. An average of 5-6 muscle synergies were sufficient to account for a wide variety of EMG waveforms associated with changes in the magnitude and direction of pulling forces. A cluster analysis partitioned the muscle synergies of the participants into a large group of clusters according to their similarity, indicating the use of a subjective combination of muscles to generate a multidirectional force vector in standing. Furthermore, we found a participant-specific distribution in the values of cosine directional tuning parameters of synergy amplitude coefficients, suggesting the existence of individual neuromechanical strategies to stabilize the whole-body posture. Our findings provide a starting point for the development of novel diagnostic tools to assess muscle coordination in postural control and lay the foundation for potential applications of muscle synergies in rehabilitation.

Abstract
The neural control of human quiet stance remains controversial, with classic views suggesting a limited role of the brain and recent findings conversely indicating direct cortical control of muscles during upright posture. Conceptual neural feedback control models have been proposed and tested against experimental evidence. The most renowned model is the continuous impedance control model. However, when time delays are included in this model to simulate neural transmission, the continuous controller becomes unstable. Another model, the intermittent control model, assumes that the central nervous system (CNS) activates muscles intermittently, and not continuously, to counteract gravitational torque. In this study, a delayed reinforcement learning algorithm was developed to seek optimal control policy to balance a one-segment inverted pendulum model representing the human body. According to this approach, there was no a-priori strategy imposed on the controller but rather the optimal strategy emerged from the reward-based learning. The simulation results indicated that the optimal neural controller exhibits intermittent, and not continuous, characteristics, in agreement with the possibility that the CNS intermittently provides neural feedback torque to maintain an upright posture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We hypothesized that postural instability observed in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) can be classified as distinct subtypes based on comprehensive analyses of various evaluated parameters obtained from time-series of center of pressure (CoP) data during quiet standing. The aim of this study was to characterize the postural control patterns in PD patients by performing an exploratory factor analysis and subsequent cluster analysis using CoP time-series data during quiet standing. METHODS 127 PD patients, 47 aged 65 years or older healthy older adults, and 71 healthy young adults participated in this study. Subjects maintain quiet standing for 30 s on a force platform and 23 variables were calculated from the measured CoP time-series data. Exploratory factor analysis and cluster analysis with a Gaussian mixture model using factors were performed on each variable to classify subgroups based on differences in characteristics of postural instability in PD. RESULTS The factor analysis identified five factors (magnitude of sway, medio-lateral frequency, anterio-posterior frequency, component of high frequency, and closed-loop control). Based on the five extracted factors, six distinct subtypes were identified, which can be considered as subtypes of distinct manifestations of postural disorders in PD patients. Factor loading scores for the clinical classifications (younger, older, and PD severity) overlapped, but the cluster classification scores were clearly separated. CONCLUSIONS The cluster categorization clearly identifies symptom-dependent differences in the characteristics of the CoP, suggesting that the detected clusters can be regarded as subtypes of distinct manifestations of postural disorders in patients with PD.

Abstract
Humans receive sensory information from the past, requiring the brain to overcome delays to perform daily motor skills such as standing upright. Because delays vary throughout the body and change over a lifetime, it would be advantageous to generalize learned control policies of balancing with delays across contexts. However, not all forms of learning generalize. Here, we use a robotic simulator to impose delays into human balance. When delays are imposed in one direction of standing, participants are initially unstable but relearn to balance by reducing the variability of their motor actions and transfer balance improvements to untrained directions. Upon returning to normal standing, aftereffects from learning are observed as small oscillations in control, yet they do not destabilize balance. Remarkably, when participants train to balance with delays using their hand, learning transfers to standing with the legs. Our findings establish that humans use experience to broadly update their neural control to balance with delays.

Abstract
Background While standing upright, the brain must accurately accommodate for delays between sensory feedback and self-generated motor commands. Natural aging may limit adaptation to sensorimotor delays due to age-related decline in sensory acuity, neuromuscular capacity and cognitive function. This study examined balance learning in young and older adults as they stood with robot-induced sensorimotor delays. Methods A cohort of community dwelling young (mean = 23.6 years, N = 20) and older adults (mean = 70.1 years, N = 20) participated in this balance learning study. Participants stood on a robotic balance simulator which was used to artificially impose a 250 ms delay into their control of standing. Young and older adults practiced to balance with the imposed delay either with or without visual feedback (i.e., eyes open or closed), resulting in four training groups. We assessed their balance behavior and performance (i.e., variability in postural sway and ability to maintain upright posture) before, during and after training. We further evaluated whether training benefits gained in one visual condition transferred to the untrained condition. Results All participants, regardless of age or visual training condition, improved their balance performance through training to stand with the imposed delay. Compared to young adults, however, older adults had larger postural oscillations at all stages of the experiments, exhibited less relative learning to balance with the delay and had slower rates of balance improvement. Visual feedback was not required to learn to stand with the imposed delay, but it had a modest effect on the amount of time participants could remain upright. For all groups, balance improvements gained from training in one visual condition transferred to the untrained visual condition. Conclusion Our study reveals that while advanced age partially impairs balance learning, the older nervous system maintains the ability to recalibrate motor control to stand with initially destabilizing sensorimotor delays under differing visual feedback conditions.

Abstract
Understanding of the human body's internal processes to maintain balance is fundamental to simulate postural control behaviour. The body uses multiple sensory systems' information to obtain a reliable estimate about the current body state. This information is used to control the reactive behaviour to maintain balance. To predict a certain motion behaviour with knowledge of the muscle forces, forward dynamic simulations of biomechanical human models can be utilized. We aim to use predictive postural control simulations to give therapy recommendations to patients suffering from postural disorders in the future. It is important to know which types of modelling approaches already exist to apply such predictive forward dynamic simulations. Current literature provides different models that aim to simulate human postural control. We conducted a systematic literature research to identify the different approaches of postural control models. The different approaches are discussed regarding their applied biomechanical models, sensory representation, sensory integration, and control methods in standing and gait simulations. We searched on Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed using a search string, scanned 1253 records, and found 102 studies to be eligible for inclusion. The included studies use different ways for sensory representation and integration, although underlying neural processes still remain unclear. We found that for postural control optimal control methods like linear quadratic regulators and model predictive control methods are used less, when models' level of details is increasing, and nonlinearities become more important. Considering musculoskeletal models, reflex-based and PD controllers are mainly applied and show promising results, as they aim to create human-like motion behaviour considering physiological processes.

Abstract
Muscle coactivation increases in challenging balance conditions as well as with advanced age and mobility impairments. Increased muscle coactivation can occur both in anticipation of (feedforward) and in reaction to (feedback) perturbations, however, the causal relationship between feedforward and feedback muscle coactivation remains elusive. Here, we hypothesized that feedforward muscle coactivation would increase both the body's initial mechanical resistance due to muscle intrinsic properties and the later feedback-mediated muscle coactivation in response to postural perturbations. Young adults voluntarily increased leg muscle coactivation using visual biofeedback before support-surface perturbations. In contrast to our hypothesis, feedforward muscle coactivation did not increase the body's initial intrinsic resistance to perturbations, nor did it increase feedback muscle coactivation. Rather, perturbations with feedforward muscle coactivation elicited a medium- to long-latency increase of feedback-mediated agonist activity but a decrease of feedback-mediated antagonist activity. This reciprocal rather than coactivation effect on ankle agonist and antagonist muscles enabled faster reactive ankle torque generation, reduced ankle dorsiflexion, and reduced center of mass (CoM) motion. We conclude that in young adults, voluntary feedforward muscle coactivation can be independently modulated with respect to feedback-mediated muscle coactivation. Furthermore, our findings suggest feedforward muscle coactivation may be useful for enabling quicker joint torque generation through reciprocal, rather than coactivated, agonist-antagonist feedback muscle activity. As such our results suggest that behavioral context is critical to whether muscle coactivation functions to increase agility versus stability.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Feedforward and feedback muscle coactivation are commonly observed in older and mobility impaired adults and are considered strategies to improve stability by increasing body stiffness prior to and in response to perturbations. In young adults, voluntary feedforward coactivation does not necessarily increase feedback coactivation in response to perturbations. Instead, feedforward coactivation enabled faster ankle torques through reciprocal agonist-antagonist muscle activity. As such, coactivation may promote either agility or stability depending on the behavioral context.

Abstract
AbstractFunctional motor redundancy enables humans to move with distinct muscle activation patterns while achieving a similar outcome. Since humans select similar strategies, there seems to be an optimal control. However, older adults move differently to young adults. The question is whether this is this due to an altered reinforcement scheme, altered sensory inputs, or due to alterations in the neuromusculoskeletal systems, so that it is no longer optimal or possible to execute the same movement strategies. The aim of this study was to analyse natural compensation strategies in the vital daily-life-task, sit-to-walk, in relation to neuromuscular capacity and movement objectives in younger (27.2 ± 4.6 years, N = 27, 14♀) and elderly (75.9 ± 6.3 years, N = 23, 12♀) adults. Aspects of the neuromuscular system that are prone to age-related decline and feasible to quantify were assessed (i.e. strength, nerve conductivity, fear of falling). Kinematics and muscle activity were recorded and joint kinetics were estimated using biomechanical models. Elderly men consistently used their arms when standing up. This strategy was not associated with a lack of or a reduction in strength, but with a reduction, but no lack of, ankle joint range of motion, and with increased fear of falling. The results show that humans preferentially maintain a minimum threshold of neuromuscular reserve to cope with uncertainties which results in compensation prior to coming up against physical limitations. Smaller base of support while standing up, a compensatory strategy with possibly greater risk of falls, was associated with muscular weakness, and longer nerve conduction latencies.

Abstract
AbstractPosturography is an objective way to systematically interpret postural control. Recent evidence suggests self-selected stance width when conducting posturography in healthy young participants, as it is easy to perform yet standardized. It is unclear, if this is similarly applicable to healthy older adults which can better serve as comparison group for persons with specific impairments, like Parkinson’s disease, who might have problems with set foot distances. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of different stance widths on a set of parameters in healthy older adults. Twenty-four healthy elderly (65.6 ± 5.0 years, BMI 26.2 ± 4.5 kg/m2) participated in the study. Posturographic measurement consisted of two tests (body sway, BS; limits of stability, LoS) each assessed in five stance widths on a force platform. A series of time domain and frequency domain parameters, such as BS and LoS range, sample entropy, mean velocity, and balance functional reserve were calculated. Anthropometric parameters and self-selected stance width (mean 17.7 ± 4.7 cm) showed positive correlation. One-way repeated measures MANOVA revealed significant differences between all parameters and foot positions. Except for sample entropy in A-P dimension, univariate analysis showed significant effects of stance widths on the parameters with stronger effects on M-L dimensions. Outcomes acquired in self-selected stance width provide comparable results to standardized stance widths 20 and 30 cm. The recommendation of self-selected stance width can be adopted to older healthy subjects. Furthermore, it reflects a natural stance and includes individual body composition.

Abstract
Horses stand for most of each day. Although they can use various leg configurations (postures), they usually stand with vertical legs. Why? We addressed this question with a 2D quasi-static model having three rigid parts: a trunk, massless fore-limbs and massless rear limbs, with hinges at the shoulders, hips, and hooves. The postural parameter we varied was ℓg, the distance between the hooves. For a given ℓg, statics finds an equilibrium configuration which, with no muscle stabilization (i.e. using minimal effort) is unstable. We assume a horse uses that configuration. To measure the neuromuscular effort needed to stabilize this equilibrium, we added springs at the shoulder and hip; the larger the springs needed to stabilize the model (kmin), the more neuromuscular effort needed to stabilize the posture. A canted-in posture (small ℓg), observed habitually in some domestic horses, needs about twice the spring stiffness (representing twice the effort) as is needed with vertical or slightly splayed-out (large ℓg) legs. This relationship of posture and stability might explain the prevalence of vertical or slightly splayed-out legs in wild and healthy domestic horses and leaves as a puzzle why some horses stand canted-in.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to quantify balance impairments in standing in people with degenerative cervical myelopathy (PwDCM) in response to external perturbations. PwDCM have damage to their spinal cord due to degeneration of the cervical vertebral column, but little is known about balance. Balance was quantified by capturing kinetics, kinematic, and electromyographic data during standing in response to lateral waist pulls. Participants received pulls during predictable and unpredictable contexts in three stance widths at two magnitudes. In response to lateral waist pulls, PwDCM had larger center of mass excursion (P < 0.001) and delayed gluteus medius electromyography onset (P < 0.001) and peak (P < 0.001) timing. These main effects of history of myelopathy were consistent across predictability, stance width, and magnitude. A multilinear regression determined that gluteus medius peak timing + tibialis anterior peak timing most strongly predicted center of mass excursion (R2 = 0.50, P < 0.001). These data suggest that PwDCM have delays in generating voluntary and reactive motor commands, contributing to balance impairments. Future rehabilitation strategies should focus on generating rapid muscular contractions. Additionally, frontal plane postural control is regulated by the gluteus medius and the tibialis anterior, whereas other muscles (e.g. gluteus minimus, ankle invertors/evertors) not studied here may also contribute.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Frontal plane reactive postural control is impaired in persons with degenerative cervical myelopathy because of delayed muscle responses. Additionally, postural control varies across stance width, predictability, and perturbation magnitude.

Abstract
Standing balance deficits are prevalent after concussions and have also been reported after subconcussive head impacts. However, the mechanisms underlying such deficits are not fully understood. The objective of this review is to consolidate evidence linking head impact biomechanics to standing balance deficits. Mechanical energy transferred to the head during impacts may deform neural and sensory components involved in the control of standing balance. From our review of acute balance-related changes, concussions frequently resulted in increased magnitude but reduced complexity of postural sway, while subconcussive studies showed inconsistent outcomes. Although vestibular and visual symptoms are common, potential injury to these sensors and their neural pathways are often neglected in biomechanics analyses. While current evidence implies a link between tissue deformations in deep brain regions including the brainstem and common post-concussion balance-related deficits, this link has not been adequately investigated. Key limitations in current studies include inadequate balance sampling duration, varying test time points, and lack of head impact biomechanics measurements. Future investigations should also employ targeted quantitative methods to probe the sensorimotor and neural components underlying balance control. A deeper understanding of the specific injury mechanisms will inform diagnosis and management of balance deficits after concussions and subconcussive head impact exposure.

Abstract
Human standing balance relies on self-motion estimates that are used by the nervous system to detect unexpected movements and enable corrective responses and adaptations in control. These estimates must accommodate for inherent delays in sensory and motor pathways. Here, we used a robotic system to simulate human standing about the ankles in the anteroposterior direction and impose sensorimotor delays into the control of balance. Imposed delays destabilized standing, but through training, participants adapted and re-learned to balance with the delays. Before training, imposed delays attenuated vestibular contributions to balance and triggered perceptions of unexpected standing motion, suggesting increased uncertainty in the internal self-motion estimates. After training, vestibular contributions partially returned to baseline levels and larger delays were needed to evoke perceptions of unexpected standing motion. Through learning, the nervous system accommodates balance sensorimotor delays by causally linking whole-body sensory feedback (initially interpreted as imposed motion) to self-generated balance motor commands. When standing, neurons in the brain send signals to skeletal muscles so we can adjust our movements to stay upright based on the requirements from the surrounding environment. The long nerves needed to connect our brain, muscles and sensors lead to considerable time delays (up to 160 milliseconds) between sensing the environment and the generation of balance-correcting motor signals. Such delays must be accounted for by the brain so it can adjust how it regulates balance and compensates for unexpected movements. Aging and neurological disorders can lead to lengthened neural delays, which may result in poorer balance. Computer modeling suggests that we cannot maintain upright balance if delays are longer than 300-340 milliseconds. Directly assessing the destabilizing effects of increased delays in human volunteers can reveal how capable the brain is at adapting to this neurological change. Using a custom-designed robotic balance simulator, Rasman et al. tested whether healthy volunteers could learn to balance with delays longer than the predicted 300-340 millisecond limit. In a series of experiments, 46 healthy participants stood on the balance simulator which recreates the physical sensations and neural signals for balancing upright based on a computer-driven virtual reality. This unique device enabled Rasman et al. to artificially impose delays by increasing the time between the generation of motor signals and resulting whole-body motion. The experiments showed that lengthening the delay between motor signals and whole-body motion destabilized upright standing, decreased sensory contributions to balance and led to perceptions of unexpected movements. Over five days of training on the robotic balance simulator, participants regained their ability to balance, which was accompanied by recovered sensory contributions and perceptions of expected standing, despite the imposed delays. When a subset of participants was tested three months later, they were still able to compensate for the increased delay. The experiments show that the human brain can learn to overcome delays up to 560 milliseconds in the control of balance. This discovery may have important implications for people who develop balance problems because of older age or neurologic diseases like multiple sclerosis. It is possible that robot-assisted training therapies, like the one in this study, could help people overcome their balance impairments.

Abstract
Standing balance is a simple motion task for healthy humans but the actions of the central nervous system (CNS) have not been described by generalized and sufficiently sophisticated control laws. While system identification approaches have been used to extracted models of the CNS, they either focus on short balance motions, leading to task-specific control laws, or assume that the standing balance system is linear. To obtain comprehensive control laws for human standing balance, complex balance motions, long duration tests, and nonlinear controller models are all needed. In this paper, we demonstrate that trajectory optimization with the direct collocation method can achieve these goals to identify complex CNS models for the human standing balance task. We first examined this identification method using synthetic motion data and showed that correct control parameters can be extracted. Then, six types of controllers, from simple linear to complex nonlinear, were identified from 100 s of motion data from randomly perturbed standing. Results showed that multiple time-delay paths and nonlinear properties are both needed in order to fully explain human feedback control of standing balance.

Abstract
People with moderate-to-severe cerebral palsy (CP) have the greatest need for postural control research yet are usually excluded from research due to deficits in sitting ability. We use a support system that allows us to quantify and model postural mechanisms in nonambulatory children with CP. A continuous external bench tilt stimulus was used to evoke trunk postural responses in seven sitting children with CP (ages 2.5 to 13 yr) in several test sessions. Eight healthy adults were also included. Postural sway was analyzed with root mean square (RMS) sway and RMS sway velocity, along with frequency response functions (FRF, gain and phase) and coherence functions across two different stimulus amplitudes. A feedback model (including sensorimotor noise, passive, reflexive, and sensory integration mechanisms) was developed to hypothesize how postural control mechanisms are organized and function. Experimental results showed large RMS sway, FRF gains, and variability compared with adults. Modeling suggested that many subjects with CP adopted "simple" control with major contributions from a passive and reflexive mechanism and only a small contribution from active sensory integration. In contrast, mature trunk postural control includes major contributions from sensory integration and sensory reweighting. Relative to their body size, subjects with CP showed significantly lower damping, three to five times larger corrective torque, and much higher sensorimotor noise compared with the healthy mature system. Results are the first characterization of trunk postural responses and the first attempt at system identification in moderate-to-severe CP, an important step toward developing and evaluating more targeted interventions.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of motor disability in children. People with moderate-to-severe CP are typically nonambulatory and have major impairments in trunk postural control. We present the first systems identification study to investigate postural responses to external stimulus in this population and hypothesize at how the atypical postural control system functions with use of a feedback model. People with moderate-to-severe CP may use a simple control system with significant sensorimotor noise.

Abstract
Variabilities or fluctuations in foot clearance are considered as a risk factor for falls during walking in older adults. The present study aimed to investigate whether the foot trajectory variability can be reduced by applying vibratory stimulation to the foot's plantar surface during walking. Ten healthy adults were asked to walk on a treadmill with vibratory shoes, and body kinematics were measured. Changes in the mean absolute deviations of the foot trajectory and joint and trunk angles were compared between the periods of applied or absent vibratory stimulus. Our results demonstrated that toe trajectory variability in the swing phase was significantly smaller when a vibratory stimulus was applied. Applying vibratory stimulus to the soles of the forefoot could potentially be used to reduce foot trajectory variability, which could reduce the risk of trips and associated falls during walking in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For individuals who never achieve independent standing, rehabilitation is focused on trunk posture and balance control. Visual biofeedback has the potential to augment sitting balance training, however previous work in this area has been limited to standing. RESEARCH QUESTION To what extent do different types of visual biofeedback influence trunk sway in sitting? METHODS Twelve healthy young adults sat on an articulating bench. During 'sway referencing' trials, the bench tilted up and down in proportion to trunk sway in the frontal plane. This paradigm increased difficulty of the balance task and required participants to rely on visual and vestibular cues. Participants were provided different visual biofeedback through a rotating needle-gage display. Trials lasted 165 s, were ordered randomly, and included either direct feedback (needle rotated in proportion to body sway), inverted feedback (needle rotated in the opposite direction of sway), time delayed feedback (0.5 s), random feedback, eyes closed, or control (eyes open with screen off). To explore the impact of inherent stability, trials were repeated with and without external trunk support. RESULTS Body sway depended on feedback type. Specifically, direct and inverted feedback reduced root-mean-squared (RMS) sway the most, time delayed feedback had a smaller effect, and random visual feedback increased participants' RMS sway compared to control. Frequency domain analyses demonstrated direct and inverted visual feedback reduced sway amplitude at the lower frequencies while having minimal effect on (or increasing) sway amplitude at higher frequencies. SIGNIFICANCE This study extends previous work by showing that visual biofeedback can have powerful effects on sitting balance, even with external support. Results from the different types of feedback conditions further our understanding of how the brain interprets visual biofeedback. Frequency-based results were similar to previous studies using different modalities and suggest participants interpret biofeedback through sensory addition as opposed to sensory substitution.

Abstract
In the human-robot hybrid system, due to the error recognition of the pattern recognition system, the robot may perform erroneous motor execution, which may lead to falling-risk. While, the human can clearly detect the existence of errors, which is manifested in the central nervous activity characteristics. To date, the majority of studies on falling-risk detection have focused primarily on computer vision and physical signals. There are no reports of falling-risk detection methods based on neural activity. In this study, we propose a novel method to monitor multi erroneous motion events using electroencephalogram (EEG) features. There were 15 subjects who participated in this study, who kept standing with an upper limb supported posture and received an unpredictable postural perturbation. EEG signal analysis revealed a high negative peak with a maximum averaged amplitude of −14.75 ± 5.99 μV, occurring at 62 ms after postural perturbation. The xDAWN algorithm was used to reduce the high-dimension of EEG signal features. And, Bayesian linear discriminant analysis (BLDA) was used to train a classifier. The detection rate of the falling-risk onset is 98.67%. And the detection latency is 334ms, when we set detection rate beyond 90% as the standard of dangerous event onset. Further analysis showed that the falling-risk detection method based on postural perturbation evoked potential features has a good generalization ability. The model based on typical event data achieved 94.2% detection rate for unlearned atypical perturbation events. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using neural response to detect dangerous fall events.

Abstract
External perturbation forces may compromise standing balance. The nervous system can intervene only after a delay greater than 100 ms, during which the body falls freely. With ageing, sensorimotor delays are prolonged, posing a critical threat to balance. We study a generic model of stabilisation with neural delays to understand how the organism should adapt to challenging balance conditions. The model suggests that ankle stiffness should be increased in anticipation of perturbations, for example by muscle co-contraction, so as to slow down body fall during the neural response delay. Increased ankle muscle co-contraction is indeed observed in young adults when standing in challenging balance conditions, and in older relative to young adults during normal stance. In parallel, the analysis of the model shows that increases in either stiffness or neural delay must be coordinated with decreases in spinal sensorimotor gains, otherwise the feedback itself becomes destabilizing. Accordingly, a decrease in spinal feedback is observed in challenging conditions, and with age-related increases in neural delay. These observations have been previously interpreted as indicating an increased reliance on cortical rather than spinal control of balance, despite the fact that cortical responses have a longer latency. Our analysis challenges this interpretation by showing that these observations are consistent with a functional coadaptation of spinal feedback gains to functional changes in stiffness and neural delay. Being able to stand still can be difficult when faced with an unexpected push. It takes the nervous system more than a tenth of a second to respond to such a perturbation, and during this delay the body falls under the influence of its own weight. By co-contracting their ankle muscles in anticipation of a perturbation, subjects can increase their ankle stiffness, which slows down their fall during the neural delay. Young subjects indeed adopt this strategy when they need to remain particularly still (for example when they stand in front of a cliff). Older subjects adopt this strategy even during normal standing. We present a model of standing balance that shows that this postural strategy provides partial compensation for the increase in neural delays with ageing. According to our model, increasing ankle stiffness only improves balance if it is accompanied by a decrease in sensorimotor gain. This provides a novel and functional interpretation for the decrease in spinal feedback observed during ageing, and observed in young subjects when they stand in challenging balance conditions.

Abstract
The robustness of motor outputs to muscle dysfunction has been investigated using musculoskeletal modeling, but with conflicting results owing to differences in model complexity and motor tasks. Our objective was to systematically study how the number of kinematic degrees of freedom, and the number of independent muscle actuators alter the robustness of motor output to muscle dysfunction. We took a detailed musculoskeletal model of the human leg and systematically varied the model complexity to create six models with either 3 or 7 kinematic degrees of freedom and either 14, 26, or 43 muscle actuators. We tested the redundancy of each model by quantifying the reduction in sagittal plane feasible force set area when a single muscle was removed. The robustness of feasible force set area to the loss of any single muscle, i.e. general single muscle loss increased with the number of independent muscles and decreased with the number of kinematic degrees of freedom, with the robust area varying from 1% and 52% of the intact feasible force set area. The maximum sensitivity of the feasible force set to the loss of any single muscle varied from 75% to 26% of the intact feasible force set area as the number of muscles increased. Additionally, the ranges of feasible muscle activation for maximum force production were largely unconstrained in many cases, indicating ample musculoskeletal redundancy even for maximal forces. We propose that ratio of muscles to kinematic degrees of freedom can be used as a rule of thumb for estimating musculoskeletal redundancy in both simulated and real biomechanical systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The role of muscle rigidity as an etiological factor of falls in Parkinson's disease (PD) is poorly understood. Our objective was to determine whether lower leg rigidity was differentially associated with frequent falls in PD compared to upper limb, neck, and total rigidity measures. METHODS We examined the associations between Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-Part III (motor) rigidity subscores and the history of monthly or more frequent falls in 216 individuals with PD (age, 66 ± 10 years; 36% female; disease duration, 7 ± 5 years) with logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 35 individuals were frequent fallers. Significant associations were identified between lower limb rigidity and frequent falls (P = 0.01) after controlling for age, sex, PD duration, total Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale- Part III score, and presence of freezing of gait. No significant associations (P ≥ 0.14) were identified for total, arm, or neck rigidity. CONCLUSION Lower limb rigidity is related to frequent falls in people with PD. Further investigation may be warranted into how parkinsonian rigidity could cause falls.

Abstract
A nonlinear model for human balancing subjected to a saturated delayed proportional-derivative-acceleration (PDA) feedback is analysed. Compared to the proportional-derivative (PD) controller, it is confirmed that the PDA controller improves local stability even for large feedback delays. However, it is shown that the saturated PDA controller typically introduces subcritical Hopf bifurcation into the system, which can also lead to falling for large enough perturbations. The subcriticality becomes stronger as the acceleration feedback gain increases or the saturation torque limit decreases. These explain some features of human balancing failure related to the increased reaction delay of inactive elderly people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mediolateral balance assessment (MELBA) comprises tracking of predictable and unpredictable targets moving at increasing frequencies, using centre-of-mass feedback. The mediolateral-balance-assessment was shown to be sensitive to subtle age-related balance deterioration. However, it has been suggested that performance during ground-level tasks can be more sensitive to balance deterioration. METHODS we developed a modified mediolateral-balance-assessment using tracking of surface translations with comparable waveforms (mechanical mediolateral-balance-assessment) to compare age sensitivity of the visual and mechanical mediolateral-balance-assessment, 15 older adults (68 SD 5 yr) and 12 young adults (30 SD 4 yr) performed both tasks. Phase-shift and gain between the CoM and either the visual target or the surface displacement for the visual and the mechanical mediolateral-balance-assessment, respectively, were calculated. To identify differences in tracking strategies between the visual and mechanical mediolateral-balance-assessment, phase-shift between trunk and leg angles was calculated. FINDINGS Overall, older adults performed worse than young across the predictable and unpredictable tracking and visual and mechanical tasks. Of all mediolateral-balance-assessment performance descriptors, a significant interaction between age and task (visual or mechanical) was only found for the mean phase-shift. Post-hoc comparisons revealed significant age differences in the visual but not in the mechanical mediolateral-balance-assessment. Significant differences in tracking strategies were found between visual and mechanical mediolateral-balance-assessment with a greater decoupling of trunk and legs during the mechanical than the visual mediolateral-balance-assessment. INTERPRETATION the visual mediolateral-balance-assessment was more sensitive to age-related balance deterioration than the mechanical mediolateral-balance-assessment, possibly because visual tracking elicits motor strategies that are more affected by ageing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Repeated exposure to a given perturbation of the postural control system has been shown to cause learning of more efficient postural strategies for maintaining balance both within a session and over time. It is important to show whether outcomes from treatment strategies are related to the effectiveness of training or are the result of the learning of the test process. OBJECTIVE To investigate the learning effect of the dynamic postural stability evaluation system. METHODS We studied 20 healthy young subjects (13 females and 7 males), with a mean age of 22.3 ± 1.9 years. Limits of stability and postural sway were assessed. All participants completed the standardized dynamic postural stability evaluation test (Bertec, Bertec Corporation, Columbus, OH, USA) seven times. The test was performed in both eyes open and eyes closed conditions. RESULTS There were differences in the limits of stability scores for backward (p= 0.042), left side (p= 0.05), and the total score (p= 0.04). There were significant differences in postural sway anteroposterior direction in perturbed surface with eyes closed condition (p= 0.004) and total limits of stability scores of perturbed surface with eyes closed condition (p= 0.046). CONCLUSIONS The study showed that balance test scores stabilized at different sessions from 1st to 3rd assessment period. Maximum normalized scores were reached at the third trial.

Abstract
As perturbation training is gaining popularity, it is important to better understand postural control during complex three-dimensional stimuli. One clinically relevant and commonly used three-dimensional stimulus is found in hippotherapy and simulated hippotherapy on a mechanical horse. We tested nine healthy participants on a horse simulator, measured head and trunk kinematics, and characterized data in time (root-mean-square and variability) and frequency (amplitude spectra, gains, and phases) domains. We addressed three fundamental questions: 1) What is the specificity of postural responses to the simulator? 2) Which plane of motion is associated with the most and least variability (repeatable movements across repeated stimuli and across participants)? 3) To what extent are postural responses influenced by different degrees of stability (addition of pelvis straps and trunk support)? We found head and trunk responses were highly specific to the three-dimensional simulator perturbation direction and frequency. Frontal plane responses had the least variability across repetitions and participants whereas transverse motion was most variable. Head motion was more variable than the trunk at low frequencies and exhibited a marked decrease in tilt in the sagittal plane. Finally, the inclusion of pelvis straps had minimal effect on kinematics at low frequencies but altered higher frequencies; whereas added trunk support reduced head and trunk responses to perturbations and altered timing characteristics in all three planes. In conclusion, the present study suggests that frontal plane motion was under a high level of control, and results support the idea that specific head and trunk postural responses can be elicited from a complex three-dimensional stimuli, such as those found in hippotherapy. Researchers and clinicians can use results from this study to help interpret variability, implement mechanical adjustments to stability, and assess responses in pathological populations.

Abstract
To achieve human upright posture (UP) and avoid falls, the central nervous system processes visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive information to activate the appropriate muscles to accelerate or decelerate the body's center of mass. In this process, sensory-motor (SM) latencies and muscular deficits, even in healthy older adults, may cause falls. This condition is worse for people with chronic neuromuscular deficits (stroke survivors, patients with multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease). One therapeutic approach is to recover or improve quiet UP by utilizing a balance board (BB) (a rotating surface with a tunable stiffness and time delay), where a patient attempts to maintain UP while task difficulty is manipulated. While BBs are commonly used, it is unclear how UP is maintained or how changes in system parameters such as SM latencies and BB time delay affect UP stability. To understand these questions, it is important that mathematical models be developed with enough degrees-of-freedom to capture the many responses evoked during the maintenance of UP on a BB. This paper presents an ankle-hip model of balance on a BB, which is used to study the combined effect of SM latencies and active muscular stiffness of the ankle and hip joints, and the BB stiffness and time delay on UP stability. The analysis predicts that people with proprioceptive, visual, vestibular loss, or increased SM latencies may show either leaning postures or larger body-sway. The results show that the BB time delay and the visual and vestibular feedback have the largest impact on UP stability.

Abstract
In addition to a vestibular system, birds uniquely have a balance-sensing organ within the pelvis, called the lumbosacral organ (LSO). The LSO is well developed in terrestrial birds, possibly to facilitate balance control in perching and terrestrial locomotion. No previous studies have quantified the functional benefits of the LSO for balance. We suggest two main benefits of hip-localized balance sense: reduced sensorimotor delay and improved estimation of foot-ground acceleration. We used system identification to test the hypothesis that hip-localized balance sense improves estimates of foot acceleration compared to a head-localized sense, due to closer proximity to the feet. We built a physical model of a standing guinea fowl perched on a platform, and used 3D accelerometers at the hip and head to replicate balance sense by the LSO and vestibular systems. The horizontal platform was attached to the end effector of a 6 DOF robotic arm, allowing us to apply perturbations to the platform analogous to motions of a compliant branch. We also compared state estimation between models with low and high neck stiffness. Cross-correlations revealed that foot-to-hip sensing delays were shorter than foot-to-head, as expected. We used multi-variable output error state-space (MOESP) system identification to estimate foot-ground acceleration as a function of hip- and head-localized sensing, individually and combined. Hip-localized sensors alone provided the best state estimates, which were not improved when fused with head-localized sensors. However, estimates from head-localized sensors improved with higher neck stiffness. Our findings support the hypothesis that hip-localized balance sense improves the speed and accuracy of foot state estimation compared to head-localized sense. The findings also suggest a role of neck muscles for active sensing for balance control: increased neck stiffness through muscle co-contraction can improve the utility of vestibular signals. Our engineering approach provides, to our knowledge, the first quantitative evidence for functional benefits of the LSO balance sense in birds. The findings support notions of control modularity in birds, with preferential vestibular sense for head stability and gaze, and LSO for body balance control,respectively. The findings also suggest advantages for distributed and active sensing for agile locomotion in compliant bipedal robots.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Posture control models are instrumental to interpret experimental data and test hypotheses. However, as models have increased in complexity to include multi-segmental dynamics, discrepancy has arisen amongst researchers regarding the accuracy and limitations of identifying neural control parameters using a single stimulus. NEW METHOD The current study examines this topic using simulations with a parameterized model-fit approach. We first determine if the model-fit approach can identify parameters in the theoretical situation with no noise. Then, we measure variability and bias of parameter estimates when realistic noise is included. We also address how the accuracy is influenced by the frequency bandwidth of the stimulus, signal-to-noise of the data, and fitting procedures. RESULTS We found perfect identification of parameters in the theoretical model without noise. With realistic noise, bias errors were 4.4% and 7.6% for fits that included frequencies 0.02-1.2 Hz and 0.02-0.4 Hz, respectively. Fits between 0.02-1.2 Hz also had the lowest variability in parameter estimates compared to other bandwidths. Parameters with the lowest variability tended to have the largest influence on body sways. Results also demonstrated the importance of closely examining model fits because of limitations in fitting algorithms. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD The single-input model-fit approach may be a simpler and more practical method for identifying neural control mechanisms compared to a multi-stimulus alternative. CONCLUSIONS This study provides timely theoretical and practical considerations applicable to the design and analysis of experiments contributing to the identification of mechanisms underlying stance control of a multi-segment body.

Abstract
A muscle synergy is a coordinative structure of muscles that has been proposed as a strategy to reduce the number of variables that the central nervous system (CNS) has to address in motor tasks. In this article, the mechanical contribution of muscle synergies and coordinative structures of muscles in voluntary multi-directional postural control were investigated. The task for healthy, young subjects was to shift and align their center of pressure (COP) to targets dispersed in 12 different directions in the horizontal plane by leaning their bodies for 10 s. Electromyograms (EMGs) of 18 muscles and COPs were recorded in the experiment. Muscle synergies were extracted using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), and the structure of coordinative modules to keep the posture leaning toward various directions was disclosed. Then the directional properties, such as the mechanical role (i.e., action directions, we use ADs as abbreviation below), of muscle synergies and muscles were estimated using an electromyogram-weighted averaging (EWA) method, which is based on a cross-correlation between the fluctuations in the activation of muscle synergies and the COP. The results revealed that the ADs of muscle synergies were almost uniformly distributed in the task space in most of the subjects, which indicates that mechanical characteristics reduce the redundancy in postural control. In terms of the composition of muscle synergies and the ADs of individual muscles, we confirmed that muscle synergies in multi-directional postural control comprised a combination of several muscles, including various ADs, that generate torque at different joints.

Abstract
Selecting a specific foot placement strategy to perform walking maneuvers requires the management of several competing factors, including: maintaining stability, positioning oneself to actively generate impulses, and minimizing mechanical energy requirements. These requirements are unlikely to be independent. Our purpose was to determine the impact of lateral foot placement on stability, maneuverability, and energetics during walking maneuvers. Ten able-bodied adults performed laterally-directed walking maneuvers. Mediolateral placement of the "Push-off" foot during the maneuvers was varied, ranging from a cross-over step to a side-step. We hypothesized that as mediolateral foot placement became wider, passive stability in the direction of the maneuver, the lateral impulse generated to create the maneuver, and mechanical energy cost would all increase. We also hypothesized that subjects would prefer an intermediate step width reflective of trade-offs between stability vs. both maneuverability and energy. In support of our first hypothesis, we found that as Push-off step width increased, lateral margin of stability, peak lateral impulse, and total joint work all increased. In support of our second hypothesis, we found that when subjects had no restrictions on their mediolateral foot placement, they chose a foot placement between the two extreme positions. We found a significant relationship (p<0.05) between lateral margin of stability and peak lateral impulse (r=0.773), indicating a trade-off between passive stability and the force input required to maneuver. These findings suggest that during anticipated maneuvers people select foot placement strategies that balance competing costs to maintain stability, actively generate impulses, and minimize mechanical energy costs.

Abstract
We present a serial design process with associated tools to select parameter values for a posture and locomotion controller for simulation of a robot. The controller is constructed from dynamic neuron and synapse models and simulated with the open-source neuromechanical simulator AnimatLab 2. Each joint has a central pattern generator (CPG), whose neurons possess persistent sodium channels. The CPG rhythmically inhibits motor neurons that control the servomotor's velocity. Sensory information coordinates the joints in the leg into a cohesive stepping motion. The parameter value design process is intended to run on a desktop computer, and has three steps. First, our tool FEEDBACKDESIGN uses classical control methods to find neural and synaptic parameter values that stably and robustly control servomotor output. This method is fast, testing over 100 parameter value variations per minute. Next, our tool CPGDESIGN generates bifurcation diagrams and phase response curves for the CPG model. This reveals neural and synaptic parameter values that produce robust oscillation cycles, whose phase can be rapidly entrained to sensory feedback. It also designs the synaptic conductance of inter-joint pathways. Finally, to understand sensitivity to parameters and how descending commands affect a leg's stepping motion, our tool SIMSCAN runs batches of neuromechanical simulations with specified parameter values, which is useful for searching the parameter space of a complicated simulation. These design tools are demonstrated on a simulation of a robot, but may be applied to neuromechanical animal models or physical robots as well.

Abstract
A more detailed understanding of trunk behavior during upright sitting is needed to create a foundation to address functional posture impairments. Therefore, we characterized the dynamics of the trunk and head during perturbed sitting. A three-link inverted pendulum model of head and trunk segments was used to analyze kinematics of eight healthy sitting adults. Magnetic sensors were placed at the head and two locations of the trunk (C7 and T7). Six surface tilt stimuli (two spontaneous sway tests [no surface stimulus; eyes open, EO/eyes closed, EC] and four tests with continuous pseudorandom surface tilts [2 peak-to peak amplitudes of 2° or 8°; EO/EC]) were applied in the frontal plane. We used frequency-response functions (FRFs) to analyze sway across ~0.045-3Hz and found systematic differences in sway dynamics across segments. Superior segments exhibited larger fluctuations in gain and phase values across frequencies. FRF gains in superior segments were attenuated compared to other segments only at low frequencies but were larger at the higher frequencies. We also tested the influence of stimulus amplitude and visual availability on FRFs. Across all segments, increasing stimulus amplitude and visual availability (EO) resulted in lower gains, however, these effects were most prominent in superior segments. These changes in gain were likely influenced by changes in sensory reliance across test conditions. In conclusion, these results provide a benchmark for future comparisons to segmental responses from individuals with impaired trunk control. We suggest that a frequency-based approach provides detail needed to characterize multi-segment dynamics related to sensorimotor control.

Abstract
Recent evidence suggests the minimization of muscular effort rather than of the size of bodily sway may be the primary, nervous system goal when regulating the human, standing posture. Different programs have been proposed for balance training; none however has been focused on the activation of postural muscles during standing. In this study we investigated the possibility of minimizing the activation of the calf muscles during standing through biofeedback. By providing subjects with an audio signal that varied in amplitude and frequency with the amplitude of surface electromyograms (EMG) recorded from different regions of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, we expected them to be able to minimize the level of muscle activation during standing without increasing the excursion of the center of pressure (CoP). CoP data and surface EMG from gastrocnemii, soleus and tibialis anterior muscles were obtained from 10 healthy participants while standing at ease and while standing with EMG biofeedback. Four sensitivities were used to test subjects' responsiveness to the EMG biofeedback. Compared with standing at ease, the two most sensitive feedback conditions induced a decrease in plantar flexor activity (~15%; P < 0.05) and an increase in tibialis anterior EMG (~10%; P < 0.05). Furthermore, CoP mean position significantly shifted backward (~30 mm). In contrast, the use of less sensitive EMG biofeedback resulted in a significant decrease in EMG activity of ankle plantar flexors with a marginal increase in TA activity compared with standing at ease. These changes were not accompanied by greater CoP displacements or significant changes in mean CoP position. Key results revealed subjects were able to keep standing stability while reducing the activity of gastrocnemius and soleus without loading their tibialis anterior muscle when standing with EMG biofeedback. These results may therefore posit the basis for the development of training protocols aimed at assisting subjects in more efficiently controlling leg muscle activity during standing.

Abstract
Explicit visual feedback on postural sway is often used in balance assessment and training. However, up-weighting of visual information may mask impairments of other sensory systems. We therefore aimed to determine whether the effects of somatosensory, vestibular, and proprioceptive manipulations on mediolateral balance are reduced by explicit visual feedback on mediolateral sway of the body center of mass and by the presence of visual information. We manipulated sensory inputs of the somatosensory system by transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation on the feet soles (TENS) of the vestibular system by galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) and of the proprioceptive system by muscle-tendon vibration (VMS) of hip abductors. The effects of these manipulations on mediolateral sway were compared with a control condition without manipulation under three visual conditions: explicit feedback of sway of the body center of mass (FB), eyes open (EO), and eyes closed (EC). Mediolateral sway was quantified as the sum of energies in the power spectrum and as the energy at the dominant frequencies in each of the manipulation signals. Repeated-measures ANOVAs were used to test effects of each of the sensory manipulations, of visual conditions and their interaction. Overall, sensory manipulations increased body sway compared with the control conditions. Absence of normal visual information had no effect on sway, while explicit feedback reduced sway. Furthermore, interactions of visual information and sensory manipulation were found at specific dominant frequencies for GVS and VMS, with explicit feedback reducing the effects of the manipulations but not effacing these.

Abstract
In 1995, David Winter concluded that postural analysis of upright stance was often restricted to studying the trajectory of the center of pressure (CoP). However, postural control means regulation of the center of mass (CoM) with respect to CoP. As CoM is only accessible by using a biomechanical model of the human body, the present article proposes to determine which models are actually used in postural analysis, twenty years after Winter's observation. To do so, a selection of 252 representative articles dealing with upright posture and published during the four last years has been checked. It appears that the CoP model largely remains the most common one (accounting for nearly two thirds of the selection). Other models, CoP/CoM and segmental models (with one, two or more segments) are much less used. The choice of the model does not appear to be guided by the population studied. Conversely, while some confusion remains between postural control and the associated concepts of stability or strategy, this choice is better justified for real methodological concerns when dealing with such high-level parameters. Finally, the computation of the CoM continues to be a limitation in achieving a more complete postural analysis. This unfortunately implies that the model is chosen for technological reasons in many cases (choice being a euphemism here). Some effort still has to be made so that bioengineering developments allow us to go beyond this limit.

Abstract
Active control of the mediolateral location of the feet is an important component of a stable bipedal walking pattern, although the roles of sensory feedback in this process are unclear. In the present experiments, we tested whether hip abductor proprioception influenced the control of mediolateral gait motion. Participants performed a series of quiet standing and treadmill walking trials. In some trials, 80-Hz vibration was applied intermittently over the right gluteus medius (GM) to evoke artificial proprioceptive feedback. During walking, the GM was vibrated during either right leg stance (to elicit a perception that the pelvis was closer mediolaterally to the stance foot) or swing (to elicit a perception that the swing leg was more adducted). Vibration during quiet standing evoked leftward sway in most participants (13 of 16), as expected from its predicted perceptual effects. Across the 13 participants sensitive to vibration, stance phase vibration caused the contralateral leg to be placed significantly closer to the midline (by ∼2 mm) at the end of the ongoing step. In contrast, swing phase vibration caused the vibrated leg to be placed significantly farther mediolaterally from the midline (by ∼2 mm), whereas the pelvis was held closer to the stance foot (by ∼1 mm). The estimated mediolateral margin of stability was thus decreased by stance phase vibration but increased by swing phase vibration. Although the observed effects of vibration were small, they were consistent with humans monitoring hip proprioceptive feedback while walking to maintain stable mediolateral gait motion.

Abstract
People make anticipatory changes in gait patterns prior to initiating a rapid change of direction. How they prepare will change based on their knowledge of the maneuver. To investigate specific and general strategies used to facilitate locomotor maneuvers, we manipulated subjects’ ability to anticipate the direction of an upcoming lateral “lane-change” maneuver. To examine specific anticipatory adjustments, we observed the four steps immediately preceding a maneuver that subjects were instructed to perform at a known time in a known direction. We hypothesized that to facilitate a specific change of direction, subjects would proactively decrease margin of stability in the future direction of travel. Our results support this hypothesis: subjects significantly decreased lateral margin of stability by 69% on the side ipsilateral to the maneuver during only the step immediately preceding the maneuver. This gait adaptation may have improved energetic efficiency and simplified the control of the maneuver. To examine general anticipatory adjustments, we observed the two steps immediately preceding the instant when subjects received information about the direction of the maneuver. When the maneuver direction was unknown, we hypothesized that subjects would make general anticipatory adjustments that would improve their ability to actively initiate a maneuver in multiple directions. This second hypothesis was partially supported as subjects increased step width and stance phase hip flexion during these anticipatory steps. These modifications may have improved subjects’ ability to generate forces in multiple directions and maintain equilibrium during the onset and execution of the rapid maneuver. However, adapting these general anticipatory strategies likely incurred an additional energetic cost.

Abstract
Neuromechanical principles define the properties and problems that shape neural solutions for movement. Although the theoretical and experimental evidence is debated, we present arguments for consistent structures in motor patterns, i.e., motor modules, that are neuromechanical solutions for movement particular to an individual and shaped by evolutionary, developmental, and learning processes. As a consequence, motor modules may be useful in assessing sensorimotor deficits specific to an individual and define targets for the rational development of novel rehabilitation therapies that enhance neural plasticity and sculpt motor recovery. We propose that motor module organization is disrupted and may be improved by therapy in spinal cord injury, stroke, and Parkinson's disease. Recent studies provide insights into the yet-unknown underlying neural mechanisms of motor modules, motor impairment, and motor learning and may lead to better understanding of the causal nature of modularity and its underlying neural substrates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related balance impairments, particularly in mediolateral direction (ML) may cause falls. Sufficiently sensitive and reliable ML balance tests are, however, lacking. This study is aimed to determine (1) the effect of age on and (2) the reliability of ML balance performance using Center of Mass (CoM) tracking. METHODS Balance performance of 19 young (26±3 years) and 19 older (72±5 years) adults on ML-CoM tracking tasks was compared. Subjects tracked predictable and unpredictable target displacements at increasing frequencies with their CoM by shifting their weight sideward. Phase-shift (response delay) and gain (amplitude difference) between the CoM and target in the frequency domain were used to quantify performance. Thirteen older and all young adults were reassessed to determine reliability of balance performance measures. In addition, all older adults performed a series of clinical balance tests and conventional posturography was done in a sub-sample. RESULTS Phase-shift and gain dropped below pre-determined thresholds (-90 degrees and 0.5) at lower frequencies in the older adults and were even lower below these frequencies than in young adults. Performance measures showed good to excellent reliability in both groups. All clinical scores were close to the maximum and no age effect was found using posturography. ML balance performance measures exhibited small but systematic between-session differences indicative of learning. CONCLUSIONS The ability to accurately perform ML-CoM tracking deteriorates with age. ML-CoM tracking tasks form a reliable tool to assess ML balance in young and older adults and are more sensitive to age-related impairment than posturography and clinical tests.

Stability is an important concern during human walking and can limit mobility in clinical populations. Mediolateral stability can be efficiently controlled through appropriate foot placement, although the underlying neuromechanical strategy is unclear. We hypothesized that humans control mediolateral foot placement through swing leg muscle activity, basing this control on the mechanical state of the contralateral stance leg. Participants walked under Unperturbed and Perturbed conditions, in which foot placement was intermittently perturbed by moving the right leg medially or laterally during the swing phase (by ∼50-100 mm). We quantified mediolateral foot placement, electromyographic activity of frontal-plane hip muscles, and stance leg mechanical state. During Unperturbed walking, greater swing-phase gluteus medius (GM) activity was associated with more lateral foot placement. Increases in GM activity were most strongly predicted by increased mediolateral displacement between the center of mass (CoM) and the contralateral stance foot. The Perturbed walking results indicated a causal relationship between stance leg mechanics and swing-phase GM activity. Perturbations that reduced the mediolateral CoM displacement from the stance foot caused reductions in swing-phase GM activity and more medial foot placement. Conversely, increases in mediolateral CoM displacement caused increased swing-phase GM activity and more lateral foot placement. Under both Unperturbed and Perturbed conditions, humans controlled their mediolateral foot placement by modulating swing-phase muscle activity in response to the mechanical state of the contralateral leg. This strategy may be disrupted in clinical populations with a reduced ability to modulate muscle activity or sense their body's mechanical state.

Abstract
Balance control must be rapidly modified to provide stability in the face of environmental challenges. Although changes in reactive balance over repeated perturbations have been observed previously, only anticipatory postural adjustments preceding voluntary movements have been studied in the framework of motor adaptation and learning theory. Here, we hypothesized that adaptation occurs in task-level balance control during responses to perturbations due to central changes in the control of both anticipatory and reactive components of balance. Our adaptation paradigm consisted of a Training set of forward support-surface perturbations, a Reversal set of novel countermanding perturbations that reversed direction, and a Washout set identical to the Training set. Adaptation was characterized by a change in a motor variable from the beginning to the end of each set, the presence of aftereffects at the beginning of the Washout set when the novel perturbations were removed, and a return of the variable at the end of the Washout to a level comparable to the end of the Training set. Task-level balance performance was characterized by peak center of mass (CoM) excursion and velocity, which showed adaptive changes with repetitive trials. Only small changes in anticipatory postural control, characterized by body lean and background muscle activity were observed. Adaptation was found in the evoked long-latency muscular response, and also in the sensorimotor transformation mediating that response. Finally, in each set, temporal patterns of muscle activity converged towards an optimum predicted by a trade-off between maximizing motor performance and minimizing muscle activity. Our results suggest that adaptation in balance, as well as other motor tasks, is mediated by altering central sensitivity to perturbations and may be driven by energetic considerations.

Abstract
A multilink sensorimotor integration model of frontal plane balance control was developed to determine how stance width influences the use of sensory feedback in healthy adults. Data used to estimate model parameters came from seven human participants who stood on a continuously rotating surface with three different stimulus amplitudes, with eyes open and closed, and at four different stance widths. Dependent variables included lower body (LB) and upper body (UB) sway quantified by frequency-response functions. Results showed that stance width had a major influence on how parameters varied across stimulus amplitude and between visual conditions. Active mechanisms dominated LB control. At narrower stances, with increasing stimulus amplitude, subjects used sensory reweighting to shift reliance from proprioceptive cues to vestibular and/or visual cues that oriented the LB more toward upright. When vision was available, subjects reduced reliance on proprioception and increased reliance on vision. At wider stances, LB control did not exhibit sensory reweighting. In the UB system, both active and passive mechanisms contributed and were dependent on stance width. UB control changed across stimulus amplitude most in wide stance (opposite of the pattern found in LB control). The strong influence of stance width on sensory integration and neural feedback control implies that rehabilitative therapies for balance disorders can target different aspects of balance control by using different stance widths. Rehabilitative strategies designed to assess or modify sensory reweighting will be most effective with the use of narrower stances, whereas wider stances present greater challenges to UB control.
