The segmental reflex relations of cutaneous afferent inflow to thoracic respiratory motoneurons

Dynamic and static contributions to the rhythmic y activation of primary and secondary spindle endings in external intercostal muscle

1. In cats anaesthetized with sodium pentobarbital 160 external intercostal muscle spindle afferents were identified by their pause in response to ventral root stimulation; the internal intercostal muscle was denervated. 2. In order to assignate the afferents to either primary or secondary endings they were tested for their responsiveness to vibration (Bianconi & Van Der Meulen, 1963). The maximal frequency which they were able to follow regularly for at least four cycles, termed 'critical frequency', was determined. 3. The endings fell into two groups: low-f (frequency) sensitive endings with critical frequencies below 400 c/s and high-f sensitive endings with critical frequencies above 400 c/s. The latter were regarded as primary endings and the former as secondary ones. 4. The manner in which the spindle endings resumed activity after a pause produced by shocks to the ventral root, i.e. whether 'phasic' or 'tonic' (Granit & Van Der Meulen, 1962) was studied in all the spindle afferents. 5. All the secondary (low-f sensitive) endings were 'tonic' except three for which the determination of critical frequency was questionable. Both 'tonic' and 'phasic' properties were found among the primary (high-f sensitive) endings. 6. The majority of the secondary endings (74%) showed inspiratory ythmic fusimotor activation in parallel with the skeletomotor contracton as did the primary endings (79 %). 7. Fifty-seven spindle endings which all showed marked rhythmic inspiratory gamma activation were tested for respiratory variations in their dynamic responses to steady stretch and length changes introduced at low repetition rates. 8. The results indicate that both 'dynamic' and 'static' gamma fibres are represented among the rhythmic gamma fibres controlling primary muscle spindle endings, whereas rhythmic activation of secondary endings seems to be mediated only by 'static' fibres.

Reflex effects of stimulation of sympathetic afferents on the triangularis sterni

The purpose of this study was to determine whether contralateral inhibition of the triangularis sterni is produced by stimulation of intrathoracic sympathetic afferents. Dogs were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and placed on positive pressure ventilation. The chest was opened through a mid-sternal incision. Diaphragm and left and right triangularis sterni EMGs were recorded, post-vagotomy, before and during electrical stimulation of the left ventral ansa subclavia (VA), vagosympathetic trunk, ventrolateral and ventromedial cardiac nerves and, when present, the stellate cardiac nerve. Peak of the phasic diaphragm EMG and expiratory time were not significantly affected by stimulation of the VA. A significant decrease in inspiratory time was observed. Ipsilateral excitation and contralateral inhibition of the left and right triangularis sterni EMGs, respectively, were produced by stimulation of the VA. Stimulation of the other intrathoracic nerves produced a similar pattern of results. Conduction velocity determinations suggested that the afferents which produced the reflex responses are, at least in part, small A fibers.

Reflex ventilatory effects of KCl stimulation of lung receptors with sympathetic afferents

The purpose of this study was to determine the reflex ventilatory effects produced by lung receptors with sympathetic afferent nerves. Seven dogs were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital, placed on a ventilator, and vagotomized. The chest was opened through a mid-sternal incision. Diaphragm EMG (D-EMG), right and left triangularis sterni EMG (TS-EMG), systemic arterial blood pressure (BP), and tracheal pressure were recorded before and after the application of 2 M KCl to the right or left lung near the venous hilum. The reflex effects produced by KCl applied to the superior vena cava (SVC) and of mechanical distortion of the lungs were also studied. KCl applied to the right or left lung or right or left lung distortion produced significant increases in peak TS-EMG ipsilateral to the applied stimulus with no significant effects on the contralateral TS-EMG. BP, inspiratory time, expiratory time, or peak D-EMG were not significantly affected, except for a decrease in inspiratory time when KCl was applied to the left lung and a decrease in BP with distortion of the left lung. KCl applied to the SVC produced a significant reflex increase in the right TS-EMG. The primary reflex response to chemical stimulation of lung receptors with sympathetic afferents was an increase in expiratory muscle activity. Additionally, mechanical stimulation may also activate these receptors. Furthermore, receptors which produce similar reflex responses are located on the SVC. That the reflex responses produced by intrathoracic receptors with sympathetic afferents were unilateral suggests that spinal mechanisms are involved.

Intercostal muscle activity of the cat in the curled, semiprone sleeping posture

We examined the effect of different sleeping postures on intercostal muscle activity in the cat. Cats assume a variety of sleeping positions, but the semiprone, curled position with one side bearing most of the weight was the posture studied in these experiments. In this posture the cat's head rests upon the forepaws and may be slightly tilted. A lateral and ventral curvature of the spine and a lateral flexion of the neck form a curl with an upward-concave side and a downward-convex side. We examined the differences in intercostal activity on the concave and convex sides in this semiprone curled position in seven adult cats. Activity was studied at 14 sites (7 showing inspiratory and 7 showing expiratory activity). Inspiratory intercostal muscle activity was in all cases greater on the concave-upward side; similarly, expiratory intercostal muscle activity was, with the exception of activity at one site, greater on the concave-upward side than on the convex downward side. This effect was evident in rapid eye-movement (REM) as well as nonrapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep.

Variations in the time course of the synchronization of intercostal motoneurones in the cat

1. Synchronization of intercostal motoneurones was studied by the construction of cross-correlation histograms which related the firing times of paired groups of efferent inspiratory or expiratory discharges recorded from filaments of the external or internal nerves of anaesthetized or decerebrate cats.2. The principal feature of the histograms was always a central peak but the time course of the central peak showed considerable variation. Three forms of synchronization were defined on the basis of the time course of the central peak: (i) short-term synchronization (Sears & Stagg, 1976), where the peak was narrow, extending over about +/-3 ms but sometimes with weak shoulders to about +/-5 ms; (ii) broad-peak synchronization where the peak was wider than this (often +/-20 ms or more) but where there were no strong periodicities; (iii) high-frequency oscillation (h.f.o) synchronization, which was named from the related phenomena in medullary and phrenic recordings (Cohen, 1979), where there were periodic peaks on either side of the central peak with a frequency in the range 60-120 Hz. Combinations of these forms of synchronization were seen in some histograms.3. When different animals were compared, broad peak synchronization was seen in association with light anaesthesia and with polysynaptic excitation of the motoneurones from muscle spindle afferents.4. In individual animals, additional anaesthesia depressed both broad peak and h.f.o. synchronization.5. Raising P(A, CO2), which increased the respiratory drive to the motoneurones, favoured short-term or h.f.o. synchronization at the expense of broad-peak synchronization.6. In three decerebrate animals only short-term or h.f.o. synchronization was seen.7. Spinal cord lesions above or below the segments of interest promoted broad-peak synchronization, even with high P(A, CO2) or deep anaesthesia.8. We conclude: (i) that short-term synchronization, due mainly to the branching of presynaptic axons, is generated mainly by those axons which transmit the respiratory drive, that drive providing most of the excitation of the motoneurones in moderately deep anaesthesia; (ii) that h.f.o. synchronization arises from the periodic synchronization of the discharges in these same presynaptic axons; (iii) that broad-peak synchronization is generated by the activity of other presynaptic neurones whose discharges are also synchronized, but aperiodically, these neurones most likely including spinal cord interneurones which are active in light anaesthesia or when released by spinal cord lesions.9. These conclusions are supported by comparisons between intracellular recordings from inspiratory motoneurones in animals showing different forms of motoneurone synchronization, the comparison including the measurements of ;average common excitation' (a.c.e.) potentials (Kirkwood & Sears, 1978).

Mechanoreceptors in rabbit ear skin innervated by myelinated nerve fibres

1. The activity of single myelinated fibres innervating mechanosensitive units in the dorsal skin of the ears of New Zealand White and Chinchilla rabbits has been recorded with glass micropipette electrodes, inserted into intact bundles of the great auricular nerve.2. Only two types of afferent unit were observed: hair units, sensitive to hair displacement, and skin spot units, sensitive to deformation of spot-like areas of skin between the hair orifices. Hair units were more numerous and no unit contained receptors of both types. Up to nine hairs or six skin spots composed each hair or skin spot unit, respectively. Both types were rapidly adapting.3. The areas of the receptive fields of the hair units were significantly larger in the New Zealand White than in the Chinchilla strain.4. In the hair units from the Chinchilla rabbits: (a) there was no correlation between the receptive field areas and the conduction velocities of the afferent fibres; (b) the areas and conduction velocities of the units showed no significant topographical distribution over the ear; (c) the extent of the overlap of the receptive fields was estimated and the sum of the areas is shown to be about 40 times the area of the ear.
