Abstract
The interplay between personality traits and impulsivity has long been a central theme in psychology and psychiatry. However, the potential association between Greed Personality Traits (GPT) and impulsivity, encompassing both trait and state impulsivity and future time perspective, remains largely unexplored. To address these issues, we employed questionnaires and an inter-temporal choice task to estimate corresponding trait/state impulsivity and collected multi-modal neuroimaging data (resting-state functional imaging: n = 430; diffusion-weighted imaging: n = 426; task-related functional imaging: n = 53) to investigate the underlying microstructural and functional substrates. Behavioral analyses revealed that GPT mediated the association between time perspective (e.g., present fatalism) and trait impulsivity (e.g., motor impulsivity). Functional imaging analyses further identified that brain activation strengths and patterns related to delay length, particularly in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, superior parietal lobule, and cerebellum, were associated with GPT. Moreover, individuals with similar levels of greed exhibited analogous spontaneous brain activity patterns, predominantly in the Default Mode Network (DMN), Fronto-Parietal Network (FPN), and Visual Network (VIS). Diffusion imaging analysis observed specific microstructural characteristics in the spinocerebellar/pontocerebellar fasciculus, internal/external capsule, and corona radiata that support the formation of GPT. Furthermore, the corresponding neural activation pattern, spontaneous neural activity pattern, and analogous functional couplings among the aforementioned brain regions mediated the relationships between time perspective and GPT and between GPT and motor impulsivity. These findings provide novel insights into the possible pathway such as time perspective → dispositional greed → impulsivity and uncover their underlying microstructural and functional substrates.

Abstract
In human walking, the left and right legs move alternately, half a stride out of phase with each other. Although various parameters, such as stride frequency and length, vary with walking speed, the antiphase relationship remains unchanged. In contrast, during walking in left-right asymmetric situations, the relative phase shifts from the antiphase condition to compensate for the asymmetry. Interlimb coordination is important for adaptive walking and we expect that interlimb coordination is strictly controlled during walking. However, the control mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we derived a quantity that models the control of interlimb coordination during walking using two coupled oscillators based on the phase reduction theory and Bayesian inference method. The results were not what we expected. Specifically, we found that the relative phase is not actively controlled until the deviation from the antiphase condition exceeds a certain threshold. In other words, the control of interlimb coordination has a dead zone like that in the case of the steering wheel of an automobile. It is conjectured that such forgoing of control enhances energy efficiency and maneuverability. Our discovery of the dead zone in the control of interlimb coordination provides useful insight for understanding gait control in humans.

Abstract
In a functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we examined speech error monitoring in a cortico-cerebellar network for two contrasts: (a) correct trials with high versus low articulatory error probability and (b) overtly committed errors versus correct trials. Engagement of the cognitive cerebellar region Crus I in both contrasts suggests that this region is involved in overarching performance monitoring. The activation of cerebellar motor regions (superior medial cerebellum, lobules VI and VIII) indicates the additional presence of a sensorimotor driven implementation of control. The combined pattern of pre-supplementary motor area (active across contrasts) and anterior cingulate cortex (only active in the contrast involving overt errors) activations suggests sensorimotor driven feedback monitoring in the medial frontal cortex, making use of proprioception and auditory feedback through overt errors. Differential temporal and parietal cortex activation across contrasts indicates involvement beyond sensorimotor driven feedback in line with speech production models that link these regions to auditory target processing and internal modeling-like mechanisms. These results highlight the presence of multiple, possibly hierarchically interdependent, mechanisms that support the optimizing of speech production.

Abstract
Rodents rely on their whiskers as vital sensory tools for tactile perception, enabling them to distinguish textures and shapes. Ensuring the reliability and constancy of tactile perception under varying stimulus conditions remains a fascinating and fundamental inquiry. This study explores the impact of stimulus configurations, including whisker movement velocity and object spatial proximity, on texture discrimination and stability in rats. To address this issue, we employed three distinct approaches for our investigation. Stimulus configurations notably affected tactile inputs, altering whisker vibration's kinetic and kinematic aspects with consistent effects across various textures. Through a texture discrimination task, rats exhibited consistent discrimination performance irrespective of changes in stimulus configuration. However, alterations in stimulus configuration significantly affected the rats' ability to maintain stability in texture perception. Additionally, we investigated the influence of stimulus configurations on cortical neuronal responses by manipulating them experimentally. Notably, cortical neurons demonstrated substantial and intricate changes in firing rates without compromising the ability to discriminate between textures. Nevertheless, these changes resulted in a reduction in texture neuronal response stability. Stimulating multiple whiskers led to improved neuronal texture discrimination and maintained coding stability. These findings emphasize the importance of considering numerous factors and their interactions when studying the impact of stimulus configuration on neuronal responses and behavior.

Abstract
Proprioception, the sense of limb and body position, is required to produce accurate and precise movements. Proprioceptive sensory neurons transmit muscle length and tension information to the spinal cord. The function of excitatory neurons in the intermediate spinal cord, which receive this proprioceptive information, remains poorly understood. Using genetic labeling strategies and patch-clamp techniques in acute spinal cord preparations in mice, we set out to uncover how two sets of spinal neurons, Clarke's column (CC) and Atoh1-lineage neurons, respond to electrical activity and how their inputs are organized. Both sets of neurons are located in close proximity in laminae V-VII of the thoracolumbar spinal cord and have been described to receive proprioceptive signals. We find that a majority of CC neurons have a tonic-firing type and express a distinctive hyperpolarization-activated current (Ih). Atoh1-lineage neurons, which cluster into two spatially distinct populations, are mostly a fading-firing type and display similar electrophysiological properties to each other, possibly due to their common developmental lineage. Finally, we find that CC neurons respond to stimulation of lumbar dorsal roots, consistent with prior knowledge that CC neurons receive hindlimb proprioceptive information. In contrast, using a combination of electrical stimulation, optogenetic stimulation, and transsynaptic rabies virus tracing, we find that Atoh1-lineage neurons receive heterogeneous, predominantly local thoracic inputs that include parvalbumin-lineage sensory afferents and local interneuron presynaptic inputs. Altogether, we find that CC and Atoh1-lineage neurons have distinct membrane properties and sensory input organization, representing different subcircuit modes of proprioceptive information processing.

Abstract
Cleft lip/palate is a common orofacial malformation that often leads to speech/language difficulties as well as developmental delays in affected children, despite surgical repair. Our understanding of brain development in these children is limited. This study aimed to analyze prenatal brain development in fetuses with cleft lip/palate and controls. We examined in utero MRIs of 30 controls and 42 cleft lip/palate fetal cases and measured regional brain volumes. Cleft lip/palate was categorized into groups A (cleft lip or alveolus) and B (any combination of clefts involving the primary and secondary palates). Using a repeated-measures regression model with relative brain hemisphere volumes (%), and after adjusting for multiple comparisons, we did not identify significant differences in regional brain growth between group A and controls. Group B clefts had significantly slower weekly cerebellar growth compared with controls. We also observed divergent brain growth in transient brain structures (cortical plate, subplate, ganglionic eminence) within group B clefts, depending on severity (unilateral or bilateral) and defect location (hemisphere ipsilateral or contralateral to the defect). Further research is needed to explore the association between regional fetal brain growth and cleft lip/palate severity, with the potential to inform early neurodevelopmental biomarkers and personalized diagnostics.

Abstract
The integration of sensory information is required to maintain body posture and to generate robust yet flexible locomotion through unpredictable environments. To anticipate required adaptations in limb posture and enable compensation of sudden perturbations, an animal's nervous system assembles external (exteroception) and internal (proprioception) cues. Coherent neuronal representations of the proprioceptive context of the body and the appendages arise from the concerted action of multiple sense organs monitoring body kinetics and kinematics. This multimodal proprioceptive information, together with exteroceptive signals and brain-derived descending motor commands, converges onto premotor networks - i.e. the local neuronal circuitry controlling motor output and movements - within the ventral nerve cord (VNC), the insect equivalent of the vertebrate spinal cord. This Review summarizes existing knowledge and recent advances in understanding how local premotor networks in the VNC use convergent information to generate contextually appropriate activity, focusing on the example of posture control. We compare the role and advantages of distributed sensory processing over dedicated neuronal pathways, and the challenges of multimodal integration in distributed networks. We discuss how the gain of distributed networks may be tuned to enable the behavioral repertoire of these systems, and argue that insect premotor networks might compensate for their limited neuronal population size by, in comparison to vertebrate networks, relying more heavily on the specificity of their connections. At a time in which connectomics and physiological recording techniques enable anatomical and functional circuit dissection at an unprecedented resolution, insect motor systems offer unique opportunities to identify the mechanisms underlying multimodal integration for flexible motor control.

Abstract
Complex interactions between brain regions and the spinal cord (SC) govern body motion, which is ultimately driven by muscle activation. Motor planning or learning are mainly conducted at higher brain regions, whilst the SC acts as a brain-muscle gateway and as a motor control centre providing fast reflexes and muscle activity regulation. Thus, higher brain areas need to cope with the SC as an inherent and evolutionary older part of the body dynamics. Here, we address the question of how SC dynamics affects motor learning within the cerebellum; in particular, does the SC facilitate cerebellar motor learning or constitute a biological constraint? We provide an exploratory framework by integrating biologically plausible cerebellar and SC computational models in a musculoskeletal upper limb control loop. The cerebellar model, equipped with the main form of cerebellar plasticity, provides motor adaptation; whilst the SC model implements stretch reflex and reciprocal inhibition between antagonist muscles. The resulting spino-cerebellar model is tested performing a set of upper limb motor tasks, including external perturbation studies. A cerebellar model, lacking the implemented SC model and directly controlling the simulated muscles, was also tested in the same. The performances of the spino-cerebellar and cerebellar models were then compared, thus allowing directly addressing the SC influence on cerebellar motor adaptation and learning, and on handling external motor perturbations. Performance was assessed in both joint and muscle space, and compared with kinematic and EMG recordings from healthy participants. The differences in cerebellar synaptic adaptation between both models were also studied. We conclude that the SC facilitates cerebellar motor learning; when the SC circuits are in the loop, faster convergence in motor learning is achieved with simpler cerebellar synaptic weight distributions. The SC is also found to improve robustness against external perturbations, by better reproducing and modulating muscle cocontraction patterns.

Abstract
Parvalbumin is one of the calcium-binding proteins. In the spinal cord, it is mainly expressed in inhibitory neurons; in the dorsal root ganglia, it is expressed in proprioceptive neurons. In contrast to in the brain, weak systematization of parvalbumin-expressing neurons occurs in the spinal cord. The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic review of parvalbumin-expressing neuronal populations throughout the spinal cord and the dorsal root ganglia of mammals, regarding their mapping, co-expression with some functional markers. The data reviewed are mostly concerning rodentia species because they are predominantly presented in literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that botulinum toxin can alter proprioceptive feedback and modulate the muscle-spindle output for the treatment of dystonia. However, the mechanism for this modulation remains unclear. METHODS We conducted a study involving 17 patients with cervical dystonia (CD), seven of whom had prominent CD and 10 with generalized dystonia (GD) along with CD. We investigated the effects of neck vibration, a form of proprioceptive modulation, on spontaneous single-neuron responses and local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from the globus pallidum externus (GPe) and internus (GPi). RESULTS Our findings demonstrated that neck vibration notably increased the regularity of neck-sensitive GPi neurons in focal CD patients. Additionally, in patients with GD and CD, the vibration enhanced the firing regularity of non-neck-sensitive neurons. These effects on single-unit activity were also mirrored in ensemble responses measured through LFPs. Notably, the LFP modulation was particularly pronounced in areas populated with burst neurons compared to pause or tonic cells. CONCLUSION The results from our study emphasize the significance of burst neurons in the pathogenesis of dystonia and in the efficacy of proprioceptive modulation for its treatment. Moreover, we observed that the effects of vibration on focal CD were prominent in the α band LFP, indicating modulation of pallido-cerebellar connectivity. Moreover, the pallidal effects of vibration in GD with CD involved modulation of cerebro-pallidal θ band connectivity. Our analysis provides insight into how vibration-induced changes in pallidal activity are integrated into the downstream motor circuit. © 2023 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Abstract
Non-syndromic, isolated musculoskeletal birth defects (niMSBDs) are among the leading causes of pediatric hospitalization. However, little is known about brain development in niMSBDs. Our study aimed to characterize prenatal brain development in fetuses with niMSBDs and identify altered brain regions compared to controls. We retrospectively analyzed in vivo structural T2-weighted MRIs of 99 fetuses (48 controls and 51 niMSBDs cases). For each group (19-31 and >31 gestational weeks (GW)), we conducted repeated-measures regression analysis with relative regional volume (% brain hemisphere) as a dependent variable (adjusted for age, side, and interactions). Between 19 and 31GW, fetuses with niMSBDs had a significantly (P < 0.001) smaller relative volume of the intermediate zone (-22.9 ± 3.2%) and cerebellum (-16.1 ± 3.5%,) and a larger relative volume of proliferative zones (38.3 ± 7.2%), the ganglionic eminence (34.8 ± 7.3%), and the ventricles (35.8 ± 8.0%). Between 32 and 37 GW, compared to the controls, niMSBDs showed significantly smaller volumes of central regions (-9.1 ± 2.1%) and larger volumes of the cortical plate. Our results suggest there is altered brain development in fetuses with niMSBDs compared to controls (13.1 ± 4.2%). Further basic and translational neuroscience research is needed to better visualize these differences and to characterize the altered development in fetuses with specific niMSBDs.

Abstract
Background Tremor affects up to 45% of patients with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS). Current understanding is based on insights from other neurological disorders, thus, not fully addressing the distinctive aspects of MS pathology. Objective To characterize the brain white matter (WM) correlates of MS-related tremor using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Methods In a prospective case-control study, PwMS with tremor were assessed for tremor severity and underwent MRI scans including DTI. PwMS without tremor served as matched controls. After tract selection and segmentation, the resulting diffusivity measures were used to calculate group differences and correlations with tremor severity. Results This study included 72 PwMS. The tremor group (n = 36) exhibited significant changes in several pathways, notably in the right inferior longitudinal fasciculus (Cohen's d = 1.53, q < 0.001) and left corticospinal tract (d = 1.32, q < 0.001), compared to controls (n = 36). Furthermore, specific tracts showed a significant correlation with tremor severity, notably in the left medial lemniscus (Spearman's coefficient [rsp] = -0.56, p < 0.001), and forceps minor of corpus callosum (rsp = -0.45, p < 0.01). Conclusion MS-related tremor is associated with widespread diffusivity changes in WM pathways and its severity correlates with commissural and sensory projection pathways, which suggests a role for proprioception or involvement of the dentato-rubro-olivary circuit.

Abstract
Proprioception plays a key role in moving our body dexterously and effortlessly. Nevertheless, the majority of investigations evaluating the benefits of providing supplemental feedback to prosthetics users focus on delivering touch restitution. These studies evaluate the influence of touch sensation in an attempt to improve the controllability of current robotic devices. Contrarily, investigations evaluating the capabilities of proprioceptive supplemental feedback have yet to be comprehensively analyzed to the same extent, marking a major gap in knowledge within the current research climate. The non-invasive strategies employed so far to restitute proprioception are reviewed in this work. In the absence of a clearly superior strategy, approaches employing vibrotactile, electrotactile and skin-stretch stimulation achieved better and more consistent results, considering both kinesthetic and grip force information, compared with other strategies or any incidental feedback. Although emulating the richness of the physiological sensory return through artificial feedback is the primary hurdle, measuring its effects to eventually support the integration of cumbersome and energy intensive hardware into commercial prosthetic devices could represent an even greater challenge. Thus, we analyze the strengths and limitations of previous studies and discuss the possible benefits of coupling objective measures, like neurophysiological parameters, as well as measures of prosthesis embodiment and cognitive load with behavioral measures of performance. Such insights aim to provide additional and collateral outcomes to be considered in the experimental design of future investigations of proprioception restitution that could, in the end, allow researchers to gain a more detailed understanding of possibly similar behavioral results and, thus, support one strategy over another.

Abstract
Proprioceptive feedback is critically needed for locomotor control, but how this information is incorporated into central proprioceptive processing circuits remains poorly understood. Circuit organization emerges from the spatial distribution of synaptic connections between neurons. This distribution is difficult to discern in model systems where only a few cells can be probed simultaneously. Therefore, we turned to a relatively simple and accessible nervous system to ask: how are proprioceptors' input and output synapses organized in space, and what principles underlie this organization? Using the Drosophila larval connectome, we generated a map of the input and output synapses of 34 proprioceptors in several adjacent body segments (5-6 left-right pairs per segment). We characterized the spatial organization of these synapses, and compared this organization to that of other somatosensory neurons' synapses. We found three distinguishing features of larval proprioceptor synapses: (1) Generally, individual proprioceptor types display segmental somatotopy. (2) Proprioceptor output synapses both converge and diverge in space; they are organized into six spatial domains, each containing a unique set of one or more proprioceptors. Proprioceptors form output synapses along the proximal axonal entry pathway into the neuropil. (3) Proprioceptors receive few inhibitory input synapses. Further, we find that these three features do not apply to other larval somatosensory neurons. Thus, we have generated the most comprehensive map to date of how proprioceptor synapses are centrally organized. This map documents previously undescribed features of proprioceptors, raises questions about underlying developmental mechanisms, and has implications for downstream proprioceptive processing circuits.

Abstract
To prevent a fall when a disturbance to walking is encountered requires sensory information about the disturbance to be sensed, integrated, and then used to generate an appropriate corrective motor response. Prior research has shown that feedback of whole-body motion (e.g., center-of-mass kinematics) drives this corrective response. Here, we hypothesized that young adults also use whole-body motion to perceive locomotor disturbances. 15 subjects performed a locomotor discrimination task in which the supporting leg was slowed during stance every 8-12 steps to emulate subtle slips. The perception threshold of these disturbances was determined using a psychometrics approach and found to be 0.08 ± 0.03 m/s. Whole-body feedback was examined through center-of-mass (CoM) kinematics and whole-body angular momentum (WBAM). Perturbation-induced deviations of CoM and WBAM were calculated in response to the two perturbation levels nearest each subject's perception threshold. Consistent with our hypothesis, we identified significantly higher perturbation induced deviations for perceived perturbations in sagittal-plane WBAM, anteroposterior CoM velocity, and vertical CoM velocity and acceleration. Because whole body motion is not sensed directly but instead arises from the integration of various sensory feedback signals, we also explored local sensory feedback contributions to the perception of locomotor disturbances. Local sensory feedback was estimated through kinematic analogues of vision (head angle), vestibular (head angular velocity), proprioception (i.e., sagittal hip, knee, and ankle angles), and somatosensation (i.e., anterior-posterior & mediolateral center-of-pressure, COP). We identified significantly higher perturbation induced deviations for perceived perturbations in sagittal-plane ankle angle. These results provide evidence for both whole-body feedback and ankle proprioception as important for the perception of subtle slip-like locomotor disturbances in young adults. Our interpretation is ankle proprioception is a dominant contributor to estimates of whole-body motion to perceive locomotor disturbances.

Abstract
Conscious perception of limb movements depends on proprioceptive neural responses in the somatosensory cortex. In contrast to tactile sensations, proprioceptive cortical coding is barely studied in the mammalian brain and practically non-existent in rodent research. To understand the cortical representation of this important sensory modality we developed a passive forelimb displacement paradigm in behaving mice and also trained them to perceptually discriminate where their limb is moved in space. We delineated the rodent proprioceptive cortex with wide-field calcium imaging and optogenetic silencing experiments during behavior. Our results reveal that proprioception is represented in both sensory and motor cortical areas. In addition, behavioral measurements and responses of layer 2/3 neurons imaged with two-photon microscopy reveal that passive limb movements are both perceived and encoded in the mouse cortex as a spatial direction vector that interfaces the limb with the body's peripersonal space.

Abstract
Knowing one's own behavioral state has long been theorized as critical for contextualizing dynamic sensory cues and identifying appropriate future behaviors. Ascending neurons (ANs) in the motor system that project to the brain are well positioned to provide such behavioral state signals. However, what ANs encode and where they convey these signals remains largely unknown. Here, through large-scale functional imaging in behaving animals and morphological quantification, we report the behavioral encoding and brain targeting of hundreds of genetically identifiable ANs in the adult fly, Drosophila melanogaster. We reveal that ANs encode behavioral states, specifically conveying self-motion to the anterior ventrolateral protocerebrum, an integrative sensory hub, as well as discrete actions to the gnathal ganglia, a locus for action selection. Additionally, AN projection patterns within the motor system are predictive of their encoding. Thus, ascending populations are well poised to inform distinct brain hubs of self-motion and ongoing behaviors and may provide an important substrate for computations that are required for adaptive behavior.

Abstract
The generation of an internal body model and its continuous update is essential in sensorimotor control. Although known to rely on proprioceptive sensory feedback, the underlying mechanism that transforms this sensory feedback into a dynamic body percept remains poorly understood. However, advances in the development of genetic tools for proprioceptive circuit elements, including the sensory receptors, are beginning to offer new and unprecedented leverage to dissect the central pathways responsible for proprioceptive encoding. Simultaneously, new data derived through emerging bionic neural machine-interface technologies reveal clues regarding the relative importance of kinesthetic sensory feedback and insights into the functional proprioceptive substrates that underlie natural motor behaviors.

Abstract
Muscle spindles, one of the two main classes of proprioceptors together with Golgi tendon organs, are sensory structures that keep the central nervous system updated about the position and movement of body parts. Although they were discovered more than 150 years ago, their function during movement is not yet fully understood. Here, we summarize the morphology and known functions of muscle spindles, with a particular focus on locomotion. Although certain properties such as the sensitivity to dynamic and static muscle stretch are long known, recent advances in molecular biology have allowed the characterization of the molecular mechanisms for signal transduction in muscle spindles. Building upon classic literature showing that a lack of sensory feedback is deleterious to locomotion, we bring to the discussion more recent findings that support a pivotal role of muscle spindles in maintaining murine and human locomotor robustness, defined as the ability to cope with perturbations. Yet, more research is needed to expand the existing mechanistic understanding of how muscle spindles contribute to the production of robust, functional locomotion in real world settings. Future investigations should focus on combining different animal models to identify, in health and disease, those peripheral, spinal and brain proprioceptive structures involved in the fine tuning of motor control when locomotion happens in challenging conditions.

Abstract
Background Essential tremor (ET) is characterized by abnormal oscillatory muscle activity and cerebellar involvement, factors that can lead to proprioceptive deficits, especially in active tasks. The present study aimed to quantify the severity of proprioceptive deficits in people with ET and estimate how these contribute to functional impairments. Methods Upper limb sensory, proprioceptive and motor function was assessed inindividuals with ET (n = 20) and healthy individuals (n = 22). To measure proprioceptive ability, participants discriminated the width of grasped objects and the weight of objects liftedwith the wrist extensors. Causal mediation analysis was used to estimate the extentthat impairments in upper limb function in ET was mediated by proprioceptive ability. Results Participants with ET had impaired upper limb function in all outcomes, and had greater postural and kinetic tremor. There were no differences between groups in proprioceptive discrimination of width (between-group mean difference [95% CI]: 0.32 mm [-0.23 to 0.87 mm]) or weight (-1.12 g [-7.31 to 5.07 g]). Causal mediation analysis showed the effect of ET on upper limb function was not mediated by proprioceptive ability. Conclusions Upper limb function but not proprioception was impaired in ET. The effect of ET on motor function was not mediated by proprioception. These results indicate that the central nervous system of people with ET is able to accommodate mild to moderate tremor in active proprioceptive tasks that rely primarily on afferent signals from muscle spindles.

Abstract
Robust locomotion relies on information from proprioceptors: sensory organs that communicate the position of body parts to the spinal cord and brain. Proprioceptive circuits in the spinal cord are known to coarsely regulate locomotion in the presence of perturbations. Yet, the regulatory importance of the brain in maintaining robust locomotion remains less clear. Here, through mouse genetic studies and in vivo electrophysiology, we examined the role of the brain in integrating proprioceptive information during perturbed locomotion. The systemic removal of proprioceptors left the mice in a constantly perturbed state, similar to that observed during mechanically perturbed locomotion in wild-type mice and characterised by longer and less accurate synergistic activation patterns. By contrast, after surgically interrupting the ascending proprioceptive projection to the brain through the dorsal column of the spinal cord, wild-type mice showed normal walking behaviour, yet lost the ability to respond to external perturbations. Our findings provide direct evidence of a pivotal role for ascending proprioceptive information in achieving robust, safe locomotion. KEY POINTS: Whether brain integration of proprioceptive feedback is crucial for coping with perturbed locomotion is not clear. We showed a crucial role of the brain for responding to external perturbations and ensure robust locomotion. We used mouse genetics to remove proprioceptors and a spinal lesion model to interrupt the flow of proprioceptive information to the brain through the dorsal column in wild-type animals. Using a custom-built treadmill, we administered sudden and random mechanical perturbations to mice during walking. External perturbations affected locomotion in wild-type mice similar to the absence of proprioceptors in genetically modified mice. Proprioceptive feedback from muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs contributed to locomotor robustness. Wild-type mice lost the ability to respond to external perturbations after interruption of the ascending proprioceptive projection to the brainstem.

Abstract
Objective: This study explored the influence of lower extremity manipulation on the postural after-effects of standing on an inclined surface.Methods: Eight healthy individuals (28.0 ± 4.1 years) were recruited for this open-label, crossover study. Participants stood on an incline board for 3 min to develop a known form of somatosensory illusion. After randomization to either a lower-extremity joint manipulation or no intervention, participants immediately stood on a force plate for 3 min with eyes closed. After a 24-h washout period, participants completed the remaining condition. Center of pressure (CoP) position data was measured by a force plate and evaluated using statistical parametric mapping. Pathlength, mean velocity, and RMS were calculated for significant time periods and compared with corrected paired t-tests.Results: Parametric maps revealed that CoP position of control and intervention conditions differed significantly for two time periods (70–86 s—control: 0.17 ± 1.86 cm/intervention: −1.36 ± 1.54 cm; 141–177 s—control: −0.35 ± 1.61 cm/intervention: −1.93 ± 1.48 cm). CoP pathlength was also significantly decreased for the second period (control: 6.11 ± 4.81 cm/intervention: 3.62 ± 1.92 cm).Conclusion: These findings suggest that extremity manipulation may be a useful intervention for populations where CoP stability is an issue. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence that manipulation of the extremities can drive global postural changes, as well as influence standing behavior. Abstract
Humans readily traverse obstacles irrespective of whether they walk or run, despite strong differences between these gaits. Assuming that the control of human obstacle traversal may be either gait-specific or gait-independent, the present study investigates whether previous experience in an obstacle traversal task transfers between the two gaits, and, if this was the case, whether transfer worked both ways. To this end, we conducted a within-group comparison of kinematic adjustments during human obstacle traversal in both walking and running, with distinct participant groups for the two gait sequences. Participants (n = 12/12 (f/m), avg. 25 yo) were motion captured as they traversed obstacles at walking and running speeds on a treadmill, surrounded by an immersive virtual reality (VR) environment. We find that kinematics recorded in our VR setup are consistent with that obtained in real-world experiments. Comparison of learning curves reveals that participants are able to utilize previous experience and transfer learned adjustments from one gait to another. However, this transfer is not symmetrical, with previous experience during running leading to increased success rate in walking, but not the other way round. From a range of step parameters we identified lacking toe height of the trailing leg as the main cause for this asymmetry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Deficits in proprioception and postural control are common in patients with different musculoskeletal pain syndromes. It has been proposed that pain can negatively affect proprioception and postural control at a peripheral level, however research is limited to animal studies. Human studies have shown that it is more likely, that the link between pain and proprioceptive deficits, lies within changes in the central nervous system where noxious and non-noxious stimuli may overlap. In clinical studies, causality cannot be determined due to other factors which could confound the assessment such as pathophysiological features of the underlying musculoskeletal disorder and different psycho-social influences especially in patients with chronic pain. On the other hand, experimentally induced pain in healthy participants is able to control most of these confounding factors and perhaps offers an assessment of the effects of pain on proprioception and postural control. The aim of this paper is to critically appraise the literature related to the effect of experimentally induced pain on proprioception and postural control. Results from these studies are discussed and limitations are highlighted for future research. METHODS A search of databases (Medline, Scopus, PubMed) was conducted as well as reference check from relevant articles published since 2000. Fifteen studies which explored the effect of experimentally induced pain on postural control and ten studies which explored the effect of experimentally induced pain on proprioception were included. RESULTS We found that in the majority of the studies, postural control was negatively affected by experimentally induced pain. Results for proprioception were mixed depending on the body region and the way the painful stimuli were delivered. Kinesthesia was negatively affected in two studies, while in one study kinesthesia was enhanced. Joint position sense was not affected in four out of five studies. Finally, force sense was affected in three out of four studies. CONCLUSIONS From a clinical point of view, findings from the available literature suggest that experimentally induced pain impairs postural control and could potentially increases the risk for falls in patients. Interventions aiming to reduce pain in these patients could lead to preservation or improvement of their balance. On the other hand, the same conclusion cannot be drawn for the effect of experimentally induced pain on kinesthesia and joint position sense due to the limited number of studies showing such an effect.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve injuries induce a pronounced immune reaction within the spinal cord, largely governed by microglia activation in both the dorsal and ventral horns. The mechanisms of activation and response of microglia are diverse depending on the location within the spinal cord, type, severity, and proximity of injury, as well as the age and species of the organism. Thanks to recent advancements in neuro-immune research techniques, such as single-cell transcriptomics, novel genetic mouse models, and live imaging, a vast amount of literature has come to light regarding the mechanisms of microglial activation and alluding to the function of microgliosis around injured motoneurons and sensory afferents. Herein, we provide a comparative analysis of the dorsal and ventral horns in relation to mechanisms of microglia activation (CSF1, DAP12, CCR2, Fractalkine signaling, Toll-like receptors, and purinergic signaling), and functionality in neuroprotection, degeneration, regeneration, synaptic plasticity, and spinal circuit reorganization following peripheral nerve injury. This review aims to shed new light on unsettled controversies regarding the diversity of spinal microglial-neuronal interactions following injury.

Abstract
Gaseous molecules have been increasingly explored for therapeutic development. Here, following an analytical background introduction, a systematic review of medical gas research is presented, focusing on tissue protections, mechanisms, data tangibility, and translational challenges. The pharmacological efficacies of carbon monoxide (CO) and xenon (Xe) are further examined with emphasis on intracellular messengers associated with cytoprotection and functional improvement for the CNS, heart, retina, liver, kidneys, lungs, etc. Overall, the outcome supports the hypothesis that readily deliverable "biological gas" (CO, H2 , H2 S, NO, O2 , O3 , and N2 O) or "noble gas" (He, Ar, and Xe) treatment may preserve cells against common pathologies by regulating oxidative, inflammatory, apoptotic, survival, and/or repair processes. Specifically, CO, in safe dosages, elicits neurorestoration via igniting sGC/cGMP/MAPK signaling and crosstalk between HO-CO, HIF-1α/VEGF, and NOS pathways. Xe rescues neurons through NMDA antagonism and PI3K/Akt/HIF-1α/ERK activation. Primary findings also reveal that the need to utilize cutting-edge molecular and genetic tactics to validate mechanistic targets and optimize outcome consistency remains urgent; the number of neurotherapeutic investigations is limited, without published results from large in vivo models. Lastly, the broad-spectrum, concurrent multimodal homeostatic actions of medical gases may represent a novel pharmaceutical approach to treating critical organ failure and neurotrauma.

Abstract
Transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation (tsDCS) is an effective non-invasive spinal cord electrical stimulation technique to induce neuromodulation of local and distal neural circuits of the central nervous system (CNS). Applied to the spinal cord lumbosacral region, tsDCS changes electrophysiological responses of the motor, proprioceptive and nociceptive pathways, alters the performance of some lower limb motor tasks and can even modulate the behavior of supramedullary neuronal networks. In this study an experimental protocol was conducted to verify if tsDCS (5 mA, 20 minutes) of two different polarizations, applied over the lumbosacral region (tenth thoracic vertebrae (T10)), can induce changes in postural sway oscillations of young healthy individuals during quiet standing. A novel initialization of the electrical stimulation was developed to improve subject blinding to the different stimulus conditions including the sham trials. Measures of postural sway, both global and structural, were computed before, during and following the DC stimulation period. The results indicated that, for the adopted conditions, tsDCS did not induce statistically significant changes in postural sway of young healthy individuals during quiet standing.

Abstract
Introduction Previous studies have shown that whole-body vibration (WBV) may have a potential impact on gait and balance in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, this body of work has proven inconclusive due to the diverse disease progression and broad age range associated with PD. The effects of WBV on proprioception, a sense frequently affected by PD, has rarely been studied. Objective To investigate the short-term effect of WBV on proprioception and motor function for individual with moderate PD. Design A single-blind randomized controlled trial. Setting. A hospital and a laboratory. Participants. 32 participants with moderate PD were recruited and randomly assigned into either the WBV or conventional therapy groups. Interventions. For the WBV group, each treatment session included five, one-minute bouts of whole-body vibration paired with one-minute rest (frequency: 6 Hz; amplitude: 3 mm). Each conventional therapy participant received balance and mobility training for 10 minutes. Main Outcome Measures. Outcome measures included proprioceptive sensitivity of the upper limb, position sense of the knee joint, Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale : motor section (UPDRS-motor), functional reach test (FRT), and the timed up and go test (TUG). Results No statistically significant difference was found between groups. However, both groups showed a significant improvement in motor function after treatment, including UPDRS-motor (P = 0.04), less affected side of FRT (P = 0.019), and TUG (P = 0.006). Conclusions Although the effect of WBV was not superior to the conventional therapy, it provided a passive and safe clinical intervention as an alternative treatment, especially for individuals with motor impairment or poor balance function.

Abstract
PURPOSE Proprioceptive feedback is crucial for motor control and stabilization of the shoulder joint in everyday life and sports. Shoulder dislocation causes anatomical and proprioceptive feedback damage that contributes to subsequent dislocations. Previous recurrent anterior shoulder instability (RSI) studies did not investigate functional neuroplasticity related to proprioception of the injured shoulder. Thus, we aimed to study the differences in neuroplasticity related to motor control between patients with RSI and healthy individuals, using functional magnetic resonance imaging, and assess the effects of peripheral proprioceptive deficits due to RSI on CNS activity. METHODS Using passive shoulder motion and voluntary shoulder muscles contraction tasks, we compared the CNS correlates of proprioceptive activity between patients having RSI (n = 13) and healthy controls (n = 12) to clarify RSI pathophysiology and the effects of RSI-related peripheral proprioceptive deficits on CNS activity. RESULTS Decreased proprioception-related brain activity indicated a deficient passive proprioception in patients with RSI (P < 0.05 family-wise error, cluster level). Proprioceptive afferent-related right cerebellar activity significantly negatively correlated with the extent of shoulder damage (P = 0.001, r = -0.79). Functional magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated abnormal motor control in the CNS during voluntary shoulder muscles contraction. CONCLUSION Our integrated analysis of peripheral anatomical information and brain activity during motion tasks can be used to investigate other orthopedic diseases.

Abstract
When animals walk overground, mechanical stimuli activate various receptors located in muscles, joints, and skin. Afferents from these mechanoreceptors project to neuronal networks controlling locomotion in the spinal cord and brain. The dynamic interactions between the control systems at different levels of the neuraxis ensure that locomotion adjusts to its environment and meets task demands. In this article, we describe and discuss the essential contribution of somatosensory feedback to locomotion. We start with a discussion of how biomechanical properties of the body affect somatosensory feedback. We follow with the different types of mechanoreceptors and somatosensory afferents and their activity during locomotion. We then describe central projections to locomotor networks and the modulation of somatosensory feedback during locomotion and its mechanisms. We then discuss experimental approaches and animal models used to investigate the control of locomotion by somatosensory feedback before providing an overview of the different functional roles of somatosensory feedback for locomotion. Lastly, we briefly describe the role of somatosensory feedback in the recovery of locomotion after neurological injury. We highlight the fact that somatosensory feedback is an essential component of a highly integrated system for locomotor control. © 2021 American Physiological Society. Compr Physiol 11:1-71, 2021.

Abstract
Estimates of limb posture are critical for controlling robotic systems. This is generally accomplished with angle sensors at individual joints that simplify control but can complicate mechanical design and robustness. Limb posture should be derivable from each joint's actuator shaft angle but this is problematic for compliant tendon-driven systems where (i) motors are not placed at the joints and (ii) nonlinear tendon stiffness decouples the relationship between motor and joint angles. Here we propose a novel machine learning algorithm to accurately estimate joint posture during dynamic tasks by limited training of an artificial neural network (ANN) receiving motor angles and tendon tensions, analogous to biological muscle and tendon mechanoreceptors. Simulating an inverted pendulum-antagonistically-driven by motors and nonlinearly-elastic tendons-we compare how accurately ANNs estimate joint angles when trained with different sets of non-collocated sensory information generated via random motor-babbling. Cross-validating with new movements, we find that ANNs trained with motor angles and tendon tension data predict joint angles more accurately than ANNs trained without tendon tension. Furthermore, these results are robust to changes in network/mechanical hyper-parameters. We conclude that regardless of the tendon properties, actuator behavior, or movement demands, tendon tension information invariably improves joint angle estimates from non-collocated sensory signals.

Abstract
Interlimb coordination plays an important role in adaptive locomotion of humans and animals. This has been investigated using a split-belt treadmill, which imposes different speeds on the two sides of the body. Two types of adaptation have been identified, namely fast and slow adaptations. Fast adaptation induces asymmetric interlimb coordination soon after a change of the treadmill speed condition from same speed for both belts to different speeds. In contrast, slow adaptation slowly reduces the asymmetry after fast adaptation. It has been suggested that these adaptations are primarily achieved by the spinal reflex and cerebellar learning. However, these adaptation mechanisms remain unclear due to the complicated dynamics of locomotion. In our previous work, we developed a locomotion control system for a biped robot based on the spinal reflex and cerebellar learning. We reproduced the fast and slow adaptations observed in humans during split-belt treadmill walking of the biped robot and clarified the adaptation mechanisms from a dynamic viewpoint by focusing on the changes in the relative positions between the center of mass and foot stance induced by reflex and learning. In this study, we modified the control system for application to a quadruped robot. We demonstrate that even though the basic gait pattern of our robot is different from that of general quadrupeds (due to limitations of the robot experiment), fast and slow adaptations that are similar to those of quadrupeds appear during split-belt treadmill walking of the quadruped robot. Furthermore, we clarify these adaptation mechanisms from a dynamic viewpoint, as done in our previous work. These results will increase the understanding of how fast and slow adaptations are generated in quadrupedal locomotion on a split-belt treadmill through body dynamics and sensorimotor integration via the spinal reflex and cerebellar learning and help the development of control strategies for adaptive locomotion of quadruped robots.

Abstract
Purpose There is growing evidence that vertebral column function and dysfunction play a vital role in neuromuscular control. This invited review summarises the evidence about how vertebral column dysfunction, known as a central segmental motor control (CSMC) problem, alters neuromuscular function and how spinal adjustments (high-velocity, low-amplitude or HVLA thrusts directed at a CSMC problem) and spinal manipulation (HVLA thrusts directed at segments of the vertebral column that may not have clinical indicators of a CSMC problem) alters neuromuscular function.
Methods The current review elucidates the peripheral mechanisms by which CSMC problems, the spinal adjustment or spinal manipulation alter the afferent input from the paravertebral tissues. It summarises the contemporary model that provides a biologically plausible explanation for CSMC problems, the manipulable spinal lesion. This review also summarises the contemporary, biologically plausible understanding about how spinal adjustments enable more efficient production of muscular force. The evidence showing how spinal dysfunction, spinal manipulation and spinal adjustments alter central multimodal integration and motor control centres will be covered in a second invited review. Results Many studies have shown spinal adjustments increase voluntary force and prevent fatigue, which mainly occurs due to altered supraspinal excitability and multimodal integration. The literature suggests physical injury, pain, inflammation, and acute or chronic physiological or psychological stress can alter the vertebral column’s central neural motor control, leading to a CSMC problem. The many gaps in the literature have been identified, along with suggestions for future studies. Conclusion Spinal adjustments of CSMC problems impact motor control in a variety of ways. These include increasing muscle force and preventing fatigue. These changes in neuromuscular function most likely occur due to changes in supraspinal excitability. The current contemporary model of the CSMC problem, and our understanding of the mechanisms of spinal adjustments, provide a biologically plausible explanation for how the vertebral column’s central neural motor control can dysfunction, can lead to a self-perpetuating central segmental motor control problem, and how HVLA spinal adjustments can improve neuromuscular function.

Abstract
Movement-evoked fields to passive movements and corticokinematic coherence between limb kinematics and magnetoencephalographic signals can both be used to quantify the degree of cortical processing of proprioceptive afference. We examined in 20 young healthy volunteers whether processing of proprioceptive afference in the primary sensorimotor cortex is modulated by attention directed to the proprioceptive stimulation of the right index finger using a pneumatic-movement actuator to evoke continuous 3-Hz movement for 12 min. The participant attended either to a visual (detected change of fixation cross colour) or movement (detected missing movements) events. The attentional task alternated every 3-min. Coherence was computed between index-finger acceleration and magnetoencephalographic signals, and sustained-movement-evoked fields were averaged with respect to the movement onsets every 333 ms. Attention to the proprioceptive stimulation supressed the sensorimotor beta power (by ~12%), enhanced movement-evoked field amplitude (by ~16%) and reduced corticokinematic coherence strength (by ~9%) with respect to the visual task. Coherence peaked at the primary sensorimotor cortex contralateral to the proprioceptive stimulation. Our results indicated that early processing of proprioceptive afference in the primary sensorimotor cortex is modulated by inter-modal directed attention in healthy individuals. Therefore, possible attentional effects on corticokinematic coherence and movement-evoked fields should be considered when using them to study cortical proprioception in conditions introducing attentional variation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A biallelic intronic AAGGG repeat expansion in the Replication Factor C subunit 1 (RFC1) gene has been recently associated with Cerebellar Ataxia, Neuropathy, Vestibular Areflexia Syndrome, a disorder often presenting as a slowly evolving sensory neuropathy at the onset. "Chronic Idiopathic Axonal Polyneuropathy" (CIAP) is a common indolent axonal neuropathy of adulthood which remains without an identifiable cause despite thorough investigations. METHODS We screened 234 probands diagnosed with CIAP for a pathogenic biallelic RFC1 AAGGG repeat expansion. Patients were selected from 594 consecutive patients with neuropathy referred to our tertiary-care center for a sural nerve biopsy over 10 years. RESULTS The RFC1 AAGGG repeat expansion was common in patients with pure sensory neuropathy (21/40, 53%) and less frequent in cases with predominantly sensory (10/56, 18%, P < 0.001) or sensorimotor (3/138, 2%, P < 0.001) neuropathy. The mutation was associated with sensory ataxia (τb = 0.254, P < 0.001), autonomic disturbances (35% vs 8%, Prevalence Odds Ratio-POR 6.73 CI 95% 2.79-16.2, P < 0.001), retained deep tendon reflexes (score 18.0/24 vs 11.5/24, R = 0.275, P < 0.001). On pathology, we observed absent/scant regenerative changes (τb = - 0.362, P < 0.001), concomitant involvement of large (100% and 99%, n.s.), small myelinated (97% vs 81%, POR 7.74 CI 95% 1.03-58.4, P = 0.02) and unmyelinated nerve fibers (85% vs 41%, POR 8.52 CI 95% 3.17-22.9, P < 0.001). Cerebellar or vestibular involvement was similarly rare in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the frequent occurrence of the RFC1 AAGGG repeat expansion in patients diagnosed with CIAP and characterizes the clinical and pathological features of the related neuro(no)pathy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The main objective of this research is to record both sensory and motor information from the ascending and descending tracts within the spinal cord for decoding the hindlimb kinematics during walking on the treadmill. APPROACH Two different experimental paradigms (i.e., active and passive) were used in the current study. During active experiments, five cats were trained to walk bipedally while their hands kept on the front frame of the treadmill for balance or to walk quadrupedally. During passive experiments, the limb was passively moved by the experimenter. Local field potential (LFP) activity was recorded using a microwire array implanted in the dorsal column (DC) and lateral column (LC) of the L3-L4 spinal segments. The amplitude and frequency components of the LFP formed the feature set and the elastic net regularization was used to decode the hindlimb joint angles. MAIN RESULTS The results show that there is no significant difference between the information content of the signals recorded from the DC and LC regions during walking on the treadmill, but the information content of the DC is significantly higher than that of the LC during passively applied movement of the hindlimb in the anesthetized cats. Moreover, the decoding performance obtained using the recorded signals from the DC is comparable with that from the LC during locomotion. But, the decoding performance obtained using the recording channels in the DC is significantly better than that obtained using the signals recorded from the LC. The long-term analysis shows that robust decoding performance can be achieved over 2-3 months without a significant decrease in performance. SIGNIFICANCE This work presents a promising approach to developing a natural and robust motor neuroprosthesis device using descending neural signals to execute the movement and ascending neural signals as the feedback information for control of the movement.

Abstract
Background Isolated body lateropulsion is a possible predominant manifestation of medulla oblongata infarction, and can occur without vestibular and cerebellar symptoms. However, it is relatively rare and challenging to diagnose. Case presentation A 67-year-old woman was admitted to the Harris International Peace Hospital complaining mainly of instability when standing and walking for the previous 8 hours. Based on the neural localization and multiple head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations, a diagnosis of cerebral infarction (vertebrobasilar system) was made. Consequently, the patient was managed using therapy aimed at preventing platelet aggregation, lowering plasma lipids, stabilizing plaques, protecting mitochondria, and improving circulation and brain function. The patient’s gait improved and she was discharged after 14 days because she was able to walk unaided. The patient was followed up for 6 months and had no noticeable undesirable side effects or signs of neurological deficits. Conclusion The possibility of lateral medulla oblongata infarction should be considered when patients present with isolated body lateropulsion, without other signs or symptoms of brainstem damage.

Abstract
Coordinated motor behaviors depend on feedback communication between peripheral sensory systems and central circuits in the brain and spinal cord. Relay of muscle- and tendon-derived sensory information to the CNS is facilitated by functionally and anatomically diverse groups of spinocerebellar tract neurons (SCTNs), but the molecular logic by which SCTN diversity and connectivity is achieved is poorly understood. We used single-cell RNA sequencing and genetic manipulations to define the mechanisms governing the molecular profile and organization of SCTN subtypes. We found that SCTNs relaying proprioceptive sensory information from limb and axial muscles are generated through segmentally restricted actions of specific Hox genes. Loss of Hox function disrupts SCTN-subtype-specific transcriptional programs, leading to defects in the connections between proprioceptive sensory neurons, SCTNs, and the cerebellum. These results indicate that Hox-dependent genetic programs play essential roles in the assembly of neural circuits necessary for communication between the brain and spinal cord. Baek et al. show that Hox-transcription factor-dependent programs govern the specification and connectivity of spinal interneurons that relay muscle-derived sensory information to the cerebellum. These findings shed light on the development of neural circuits required for proprioception—the perception of body position.

Abstract
Leg morphology is an important outcome of evolution. A remarkable morphological leg feature is the existence of biarticular muscles that span adjacent joints. Diverse studies from different fields of research suggest a less coherent understanding of the muscles' functionality in cyclic, sagittal plane locomotion. We structured this review of biarticular muscle function by reflecting biomechanical template models, human experiments and robotic system designs. Within these approaches, we surveyed the contribution of biarticular muscles to the locomotor subfunctions (stance, balance and swing). While mono- and biarticular muscles do not show physiological differences, the reviewed studies provide evidence for complementary and locomotor subfunction-specific contributions of mono- and biarticular muscles. In stance, biarticular muscles coordinate joint movements, improve economy (e.g. by transferring energy) and secure the zig-zag configuration of the leg against joint overextension. These commonly known functions are extended by an explicit role of biarticular muscles in controlling the angular momentum for balance and swing. Human-like leg arrangement and intrinsic (compliant) properties of biarticular structures improve the controllability and energy efficiency of legged robots and assistive devices. Future interdisciplinary research on biarticular muscles should address their role for sensing and control as well as non-cyclic and/or non-sagittal motions, and non-static moment arms.

Abstract
For many fish species, rhythmic movement of the pectoral fins, or forelimbs, drives locomotion. In terrestrial vertebrates, normal limb-based rhythmic gaits require ongoing modulation with limb mechanosensors. Given the complexity of the fluid environment and dexterity of fish swimming through it, we hypothesize that mechanosensory modulation is also critical to normal fin-based swimming. Here, we examined the role of sensory feedback from the pectoral fin rays and membrane on the neuromuscular control and kinematics of pectoral fin-based locomotion. Pectoral fin kinematics and electromyograms of the six major fin muscles of the parrotfish, Scarus quoyi, a high-performance pectoral fin swimmer, were recorded during steady swimming before and after bilateral transection of the sensory nerves extending into the rays and surrounding membrane. Alternating activity of antagonistic muscles was observed and drove the fin in a figure-of-eight fin stroke trajectory before and after nerve transection. After bilateral transections, pectoral fin rhythmicity remained the same or increased. Differences in fin kinematics with the loss of sensory feedback also included fin kinematics with a significantly more inclined stroke plane angle, an increased angular velocity and fin beat frequency, and a transition to the body-caudal fin gait at lower speeds. After transection, muscles were active over a larger proportion of the fin stroke, with overlapping activation of antagonistic muscles rarely observed in the trials of intact fish. The increased overlap of antagonistic muscle activity might stiffen the fin system in order to enhance control and stability in the absence of sensory feedback from the fin rays. These results indicate that fin ray sensation is not necessary to generate the underlying rhythm of fin movement, but contributes to the specification of pectoral fin motor pattern and movement during rhythmic swimming.

Abstract
Lower limb amputation (LLA) destroys the sensory communication between the brain and the external world during standing and walking. Current prostheses do not restore sensory feedback to amputees, who, relying on very limited haptic information from the stump-socket interaction, are forced to deal with serious issues: the risk of falls, decreased mobility, prosthesis being perceived as an external object (low embodiment), and increased cognitive burden. Poor mobility is one of the causes of eventual device abandonment. Restoring sensory feedback from the missing leg of above-knee (transfemoral) amputees and integrating the sensory feedback into the sensorimotor loop would markedly improve the life of patients. In this study, we developed a leg neuroprosthesis, which provided real-time tactile and emulated proprioceptive feedback to three transfemoral amputees through nerve stimulation. The feedback was exploited in active tasks, which proved that our approach promoted improved mobility, fall prevention, and agility. We also showed increased embodiment of the lower limb prosthesis (LLP), through phantom leg displacement perception and questionnaires, and ease of the cognitive effort during a dual-task paradigm, through electroencephalographic recordings. Our results demonstrate that induced sensory feedback can be integrated at supraspinal levels to restore functional abilities of the missing leg. This work paves the way for further investigations about how the brain interprets different artificial feedback strategies and for the development of fully implantable sensory-enhanced leg neuroprostheses, which could drastically ameliorate life quality in people with disability.

Abstract
The vertebrate control of locomotion involves all levels of the nervous system from cortex to the spinal cord. Here, we aim to cover all main aspects of this complex behavior, from the operation of the microcircuits in the spinal cord to the systems and behavioral levels and extend from mammalian locomotion to the basic undulatory movements of lamprey and fish. The cellular basis of propulsion represents the core of the control system, and it involves the spinal central pattern generator networks (CPGs) controlling the timing of different muscles, the sensory compensation for perturbations, and the brain stem command systems controlling the level of activity of the CPGs and the speed of locomotion. The forebrain and in particular the basal ganglia are involved in determining which motor programs should be recruited at a given point of time and can both initiate and stop locomotor activity. The propulsive control system needs to be integrated with the postural control system to maintain body orientation. Moreover, the locomotor movements need to be steered so that the subject approaches the goal of the locomotor episode, or avoids colliding with elements in the environment or simply escapes at high speed. These different aspects will all be covered in the review.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Providing accurate and robust estimates of limb kinematics from recorded neural activities is prominent in closed-loop control of functional electrical stimulation (FES). A major issue in providing accurate decoding the limb kinematics is the decoding model. The primary goal of this study is to develop a decoding approach to model the dynamic interactions of neural systems for accurate decoding. Another critical issue is to find reliable recording sites. Up to now, neural recordings from spinal neural activities were investigated. In this paper, the neural recordings from different vertebrae in decoding limb kinematics are investigated. APPROACH In the current study, a new generative probabilistic model with explicit considering the joint density is developed. Then, an adaptive discriminative learning algorithm is proposed for learning the model. It will be shown that the proposed generative process can be implemented by a recurrent neural network (RNN) with specific structure. We record the neural activities from dorsal horn neurons by using three electrodes placed in the L4, L5, and L6 vertebrae in anesthetized cats. MAIN RESULTS Information theoretic analysis on single-joint movement and multi-segment recordings implies the rostrocaudal distribution of kinematic information. It is demonstrated that during hip movement, best decoding performance is achieved by L4 recordings. For knee and ankle movements, best decodings are achieved by L5, and L6 recordings respectively. It is also shown that the decoding accuracy using multi-segment recordings outperforms decoding accuracy obtained by single-segment recording in multi-joint movement. The results also confirm the superiority of the proposed probabilistic recurrent neural network (PRNN) over the conventional recurrent neural network and Kalman filter ([Formula: see text]). SIGNIFICANCE Multi-segment recordings from dorsal horn neurons as well as the proposed probabilistic recurrent network model provide a promising approach for robust and accurate decoding limb kinematics.

Abstract
Muscle kinematics and kinetics are nonlinearly encoded by proprioceptors, and the changes in muscle length and velocity are integrated into Ia afferent. Besides, proprioceptive signals from multiple muscles are probably mixed in afferent pathways, which all lead to difficulties in proprioceptive recognition for the cerebellum. In this study, the artificial neural networks, whose organizations are biologically based on the spinocerebellar tract and cerebellum, are utilized to decode the proprioceptive signals. Consistent with the controversy of the proprioceptive division in the dorsal spinocerebellar tract, the spinocerebellar tract networks incorporated two distinct inferences, (1) the centralized networks, which mixed Ia, II, and Ib and processed them together; (2) the decentralized networks, which processed Ia, II, and Ib afferents separately. The cerebellar networks were based on the Marr-Albus model to recognize the kinematic states. The networks were trained by a specific movement, and the trained networks were subsequently required to predict kinematic states of six movements. The results demonstrated that the centralized networks, which were more consistent with the physiological findings in recent years, had better recognition accuracy than the decentralized networks, and the networks were still effective even when proprioceptive afferents from multiple muscles were integrated.

Abstract
There is an interest to identify factors facilitating locomotor adaptation induced by split-belt walking (i.e., legs moving at different speeds) because of its clinical potential. We hypothesized that augmenting braking forces, rather than propulsion forces, experienced at the feet would increase locomotor adaptation during and after split-belt walking. To test this, forces were modulated during split-belt walking with distinct slopes: incline (larger propulsion than braking), decline (larger braking than propulsion), and flat (similar propulsion and braking). Step length asymmetry was compared between groups because it is a clinically relevant measure robustly adapted on split-belt treadmills. Unexpectedly, the group with larger propulsion demands (i.e., the incline group) changed their gait the most during adaptation, reached their final adapted state more quickly, and had larger after-effects when the split-belt perturbation was removed. We also found that subjects who experienced larger disruptions of propulsion forces in early adaptation exhibited greater after-effects, which further highlights the catalytic role of propulsion forces on locomotor adaptation. The relevance of mechanical demands on shaping our movements was also indicated by the steady state split-belt behavior, during which each group recovered their baseline leg orientation to meet leg-specific force demands at the expense of step length symmetry. Notably, the flat group was nearly symmetric, whereas the incline and decline group overshot and undershot step length symmetry, respectively. Taken together, our results indicate that forces propelling the body facilitate gait changes during and after split-belt walking. Therefore, the particular propulsion demands to walk on a split-belt treadmill might explain the gait symmetry improvements in hemiparetic gait following split-belt training.

Abstract
An accurate and effective neurological evaluation is indispensable in the treatment and rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury. However, most of the existing evaluation methods in basic research and clinical practice are not objective or intuitive for assessing the neurological function of big animals, and are also difficult to use to qualify the extent of damage and recovery. In the present study, we established a big animal model of traumatic brain injury by impacting the cortical motor region of beagles. At 2 weeks after successful modeling, we detected neurological deficiencies in the animal model using a series of techniques, including three-dimensional motion capture, electromyogram and ground reaction force. These novel technologies may play an increasingly important role in the field of traumatic brain injury diagnosis and rehabilitation in the future. The experimental protocol was approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee of Logistics University of People’s Armed Police Force (approval No. 2017-0006.2).

Abstract
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensory-motor circadian disorder, whose basic components include urge to move the legs, unpleasant sensory experience, and periodic leg movements during sleep, all associated with an enhancement of the individual's arousal state. Brain iron deficiency (BID) is considered to be a key initial pathobiological factor, based on alterations of iron acquisition by the brain, also moderated by genetic factors. In addition to the well-known dopaminergic involvement in RLS, previous studies pointed out that BID brings also a hyperglutamatergic state that influences a dysfunctional cortico-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuit in genetically vulnerable individuals. However, the enhancement of arousal mechanisms in RLS may also be explained by functional changes of the ascending arousal systems and by deficitary GABA-mediated inhibitory control. Very recently, it was also suggested that BID induces a hypoadenosinergic state in RLS, thus possibly providing a link for a putative unified pathophysiological mechanism accounting for both hyperarousal and sensory-motor signs. Consequently, RLS might be viewed as a multitransmitter neurochemical disorder, globally resulting in enhanced excitability and decreased inhibition. In this framework, understanding the complex interaction of different neuronal circuits in generating the symptoms of RLS is mandatory both for a better diagnostic refinement and for an innovative therapeutic support. Notably, multiple neurotransmission dysfunction, either primary or triggered by BID, may also bridge the gap between RLS and other chronic pain disorders. This chapter summarizes the current experimental and clinical findings into a heuristic model of the electrophysiology and neurochemistry underlying RLS.

Abstract
This magnetoencephalography (MEG) study aims at characterizing the coupling between cerebellar activity and the kinematics of repetitive self-paced finger movements. Neuromagnetic signals were recorded in 11 right-handed healthy adults while they performed repetitive flexion-extensions of right-hand fingers at three different movement rates: slow (~ 1 Hz), medium (~ 2 Hz), and fast (~ 3 Hz). Right index finger acceleration was monitored with an accelerometer. Coherence analysis was used to index the coupling between right index finger acceleration and neuromagnetic signals. Dynamic imaging of coherent sources was used to locate coherent sources. Coupling directionality between primary sensorimotor (SM1), cerebellar, and accelerometer signals was assessed with renormalized partial directed coherence. Permutation-based statistics coupled with maximum statistic over the entire brain volume or restricted to the cerebellum were used. At all movement rates, maximum coherence peaked at SM1 cortex contralateral to finger movements at movement frequency (F0) and its first harmonic (F1). Significant (statistics restricted to the cerebellum) coherence consistently peaked at the right posterior lobe of the cerebellum at F0 with no influence of movement rate. Coupling between Acc and cerebellar signals was significantly stronger in the afferent than in the efferent direction with no effective contribution of cortico-cerebellar or cerebello-cortical pathways. This study demonstrates the existence of significant coupling between finger movement kinematics and neuromagnetic activity at the posterior cerebellar lobe ipsilateral to finger movement at F0. This coupling is mainly driven by spinocerebellar, presumably proprioceptive, afferences.

Abstract
The successful completion of many behaviors relies on sensory feedback. This symposium brought together researchers using novel techniques to study how different stimuli are encoded, how and where multimodal feedback is integrated, and how feedback modulates motor output in diverse modes of locomotion (aerial, aquatic, and terrestrial) in a diverse range of taxa (insects, fish, tetrapods), and in robots. Similar to biological organisms, robots can be equipped with integrated sensors and can rely on sensory feedback to adjust the output signal of a controller. Engineers often look to biology for inspiration on how animals have evolved solutions to problems similar to those experienced in robotic movement. Similarly, biologists too must proactively engage with engineers to apply computer and robotic models to test hypotheses and answer questions on the capacity and roles of sensory feedback in generating effective movement. Through a diverse group of researchers, including both biologists and engineers, the symposium attempted to catalyze new interdisciplinary collaborations and identify future research directions for the development of bioinspired sensory control systems, as well as the use of robots to test hypotheses in neuromechanics.
